The aim of the present study was to investigate the ovulation rate and its relationship to number of total piglets born in purebred gilts under tropical climatic conditions. This study was conducted in two swine breeding herds (A and B) in the northeastern part of Thailand. The sources of swine genetic material originate from West Europe. Gilts were mated (AI) on the second or later observed estrus at a body weight of at least 130 kg. In most cases, they were mated at third estrus. One hundred and twenty-seven gilts, 24 Landrace and 24 Yorkshire from herd A, and 42 Landrace and 37 Yorkshire from herd B were used. Gilts were examined once by laparoscopy under general anesthesia between days 8 and 15 after mating. The ovaries were examined and the pathological findings were recorded. The number of corpora lutea was counted, and was assumed to equal the ovulation rate. Subsequent mating results and farrowing data were recorded. The data were analyzed with analysis of variance. Single or double unilateral cysts and par-ovarian cysts did not affect mating results. Landrace gilts were significantly younger at first mating than Yorkshire gilts (244 versus 249 days, P < 0.05). At first mating, Yorkshire gilts had a significantly higher ovulation rate compared to Landrace gilts (15.3 versus 13.8, P < 0.001). There was no difference in the number of total piglets born per litter between the two breeds, but the total prenatal loss from ovulation to farrowing was significantly higher in Yorkshire than in Landrace gilts. Both the low ovulation rate and the high prenatal loss contribute to the low litter size in gilts raised under tropical climatic conditions.  相似文献

Relationships of the length of the uterus at one reproductive stage to the length at other stages and the effect on potential litter size were determined. In Experiment 1, the length of the uterus was measured in situ at 20, 60, or 100 days of age at laparotomy with 20 gilts in each of the three age groups. Forty days after the initial measurement, the uterus was again measured in situ, gilts were ovariectomized and hysterectomized, and associations among uterine measurements at the two different stages were determined. Correlations between uterine length in situ and between uterine length and weight 40 days later were all greater than 0.75 (P < 0.001). The length of one uterine horn increased from 13.9 cm at 20 days of age to 36.7 cm at 140 days of age (P < 0.01). In Experiment 2, 66 gilts were unilaterally hysterectomized and ovariectomized (UHOX) at 150 days of age and the ovary was weighed. Length of the one horn was measured in 36 gilts. At 10 days after first estrus, the length of the remaining uterine horn was measured at laparotomy and corpora lutea were counted in 53 gilts. In 15 of the 53 gilts the remaining uterine horn was removed to obtain uterine weights. At the second or third estrus, 38 gilts were mated and at Day 30 of gestation, 31 gilts were pregnant. The gilts were killed, and the length of the uterus measured and corpora lutea (CL) and fetuses were counted. The length of one uterine horn at 150 days of age was 70 cm with a range of 47–110 cm. At 10 days after first estrus, length had increased to a mean of 141 cm with a range of 86–194 cm and at 30 days of gestation the mean was 244 cm with a range of 186–311 cm. There were 12.2 CL at first estrus, which was not different from 12.4 CL at the second or third estrus. The mean number of fetuses in one horn at 30 days of gestation was 9.5 with 77% prenatal survival. Length of uterine horn at 150 days of age was correlated with uterine horn length (r = 0.56, P < 0.001) at 10 days after first estrus and number of live fetuses (r=0.39, P<0.05) at 30 days of gestation. At Day 10 after first estrus, uterine length was not correlated with the number of CL, whereas at Day 30 of gestation, the number of CL and uterine length were correlated with the number of live fetuses in those gilts with below the mean number of live fetuses, but not in those gilts with above the mean of live fetuses. The number of live fetuses (r=0.66, P < 0.001) and fetal survival (r=0.63; P < 0.001) were correlated with uterine horn length in pregnant UHOX gilts. Length of the prepubertal uterus gives an indication of postpubertal length and the potential litter size in pigs.  相似文献

Seventy-seven Large White x Meishan F2 crossbred gilts with prolactin receptor (PRLR) genotype AA (n = 26), AB (n = 36) and BB (n = 15) were compared for teat number (FTm), age at first estrus, gestation length (GL), litter size, and litter means of functional teat number (FTp), birthweight (BW), and pre-weaning growth rate (GR). Own placental information was available for 88% of 620 live-born piglets (62 gilts), since placentae were labeled during farrowing. The effect of PRLR genotype of the mother on average placenta weight (PLW) and placenta efficiency (EFF = BW/PLW), was therefore, also analyzed, PRLR genotype significantly (P < 0.05) affected age at first estrus and, as a result (since the gilts were inseminated at a fixed estrus number), age and bodyweight at insemination. Furthermore, PRLR genotype affected total number of piglets born (TNB, P = 0.056) and number of piglets born alive (NBA, P = 0.072), but it did not affect (P > 0.3) GL, BW or GR, neither before nor after correction for litter size. BB gilts were significantly younger at first estrus and younger and lighter at insemination than AA gilts (P < 0.05). AA gilts had larger TNB (P = 0.047) and tended to have a larger NBA (P = 0.062) than BB gilts. TNB was 11.4 +/- 0.7, 10.8 +/- 0.6, and 8.8 +/- 0.9; NBA was 11.1 +/- 0.6, 10.5 +/- 0.6, and 8.7 +/- 0.9; BW was 1309 +/- 40, 1277 +/- 34, and 1290 +/- 53 g; and GL was 113.6 +/- 0.3, 113.8 +/- 0.3, and 113.5 +/- 0.4 days for AA, AB and BB gilts, respectively. The effects on litter size and age at first estrus are independent effects. PRLR affected PLW (P = 0.050) and EFF (P = 0.066), resulting in a difference between AA and BB gilts. PLW was 160 +/- 9, 181 +/- 7 and 196 +/- 11 g and EFF was 7.6 +/- 0.2, 7.3 +/- 0.2 and 6.7 +/- 0.3 for AA (n = 19), AB (n = 29) and BB (n = 14) gilts, respectively. After correction for TNB, the differences disappeared. Functional teat number of the AA. AB and BB gilts was 15.35 +/- 0.22, 15.53 +/- 0.18, and 15.60 +/- 0.29, respectively, and was not affected by PRLR genotype (P = 0.7). Functional teat number of piglets from AA, AB and BB mothers was 14.20 +/- 0.10, 14.37 +/- 0.08, and 14.63 +/- 0.13, respectively. Piglets from BB mothers had on average larger numbers of functional teats compared to piglets from AA mothers (P = 0.028). In conclusion, PRLR gene is a major gene or marker for age at first estrus, litter size, and litter average of number of functional teats in the Large White x Meishan F2 crossbred gilts studied. The favorable allele for litter size (A allele) is the unfavorable allele for age at first estrus and for litter mean of functional teat number.  相似文献

The present study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the influence of birth litter size, birth parity number, performance test parameters (growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight) and age at first mating (AFM) of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows. Traits analysed included remating rate in gilts (RRG), litter size, weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), remating rate in sows and farrowing rate (FR). Data were collected from 11 Swedish Landrace (L) and 8 Swedish Yorkshire (Y) nucleus herds and included 20712 farrowing records from sow parities 1-5. Sows that farrowed for the first time during 1993-1997, having complete records of performance test and AFM, were followed up to investigate their subsequent reproductive performance until their last farrowing in 1999. Analysis of variance and multiple regression were applied to continuous data. Logistic regression was applied to categorical data. The analyses were based on the same animals and the records were split into six groups of females, i.e. gilts, primiparous sows, and sows in parities 2-5, respectively. Each additional piglet in the litter in which the gilt was born was associated with an increase of her own litter size of between 0.07 and 0.1 piglets per litter (P<0.001). Gilts born from sow parity 1 had a longer WSI as primiparous sows compared with gilts born from sow parity 4 (0.3 days; P<0.05) or parity 5 (0.4 days; P<0.01). Gilts with a higher growth rate of up to 100kg body weight had a larger litter size (all parities 1-5; P<0.05), shorter WSI (all parities 1-5; P<0.05) and higher FR (parities 2 and 5; P<0.05) than gilts with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a high backfat thickness at 100kg body weight had a shorter WSI as primiparous sows (P<0.001) compared with low backfat gilts, and 0.1 piglets per litter more as second parity sows (P<0.01). A 10 day increase in AFM resulted in an increase in litter size of about 0.1 piglet for primiparous sows (P<0.001) and a decrease (P<0.05) for sow parities 4 and 5.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the ovulation rate and the weaning-to-service interval (WSI) of sows in relation to their body weight loss during lactation in tropical climatic conditions. Effect of lactation length (LL), number of total born piglets, number of live born piglets, litter birth weight, average piglet birth weight, number of pigs weaned, litter weaning weight and average pig weaned weight on sow weight loss during lactation were also studied. This study was conducted in two commercial purebred sow herds (A, B) in the central part of Thailand from August to December 1997. The herds had both Landrace (L) and Yorkshire (Y) sows. The 123 sows (55 L and 68 Y) in herd A and 153 sows (95 L and 58 Y) in herd B, parity 1-4, were weighed within 4 days after farrowing and at weaning. Lactation length, litter size at birth and at weaning, litter weight at birth and at weaning, and WSI were recorded for each of these sows. In herd A, 52 sows (20 L and 32 Y) were examined once by laparoscopy between days 8 and 14 after AI-service. These sows had farrowed at least seven piglets in the previous parturition. The numbers of corpora lutea (CL) in both ovaries were counted, and were assumed to equal the ovulation rate. L-sows had significantly (P < 0.05) higher relative weight loss during lactation (RWL) than Y-sows. The RWL increased by 0.7% for each extra pig weaned. When LL increased by 1 day, within the interval of 17-34 days, RWL decreased by 0.6%. Sows with a high weight loss had significantly (P < 0.05) longer WSI than sows with medium or low weight loss. Weight loss had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on WSI in parity 1 and 2 sows. Y-sows had more CL than L-sows (15.7 versus 14.0) (P < 0.05). RWL, parity and regression on lactation length had no significant effect on number of CL. In conclusion, sows with higher number of pigs weaned lose more weight. Under the restricted feeding regime applied, high weight loss during lactation prolongs WSI in parity 1 and 2 sows, but has no influence on the ovulation rate at first oestrus after weaning. The ovulation rate is higher in Yorkshire than in Landrace sows. The ovulation rate is independent of parity.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyze reproductive performance in purebred Landrace and Yorkshire sows with special reference to seasonal influence and parity number, under tropical conditions where day length is almost constant throughout the year. Data from three purebred sow herds in Thailand during the period from 1993 to 1996 were analyzed. The two breeds were present in all three herds. The analysis comprised records of 3848 Landrace sow litters and 2033 Yorkshire sow litters. The statistical models included the fixed effects of month, year, parity, breed of the sow, herd, and two-way interactions of breed-parity, breed-herd, breed-month, breed-year, parity-month, month-herd, year-herd and month-year. The random effect of sow within breed was included in all models. Analysis of covariance was performed to analyze the effect of temperature, humidity and heat index on number of total born per litter (NTB), weaning to first service interval (WSI) and farrowing rate (FR). Landrace sows had significantly higher NTB (0.6 piglets), number of live born per litter (0.5 piglets), and average birth weight (0.13 kg) than Yorkshire sows (P<0.001). Farrowing rate was 3.9% higher in Landrace sows than in Yorkshire sows (P<0.01). However, Yorkshire sows had significantly shorter WSI (P<0.001) and significantly higher proportion of sows served within 7 days after weaning (P<0.01) than Landrace sows. No breed differences were found in number of stillborn per litter and weaning to conception interval. Parity had significant effect on all reproductive parameters analyzed. Number of total born and live born per litter was significantly lower for sows farrowing during the rainy season than in other seasons. Farrowing rate was low for sows mated during the hot and rainy season. Weaning to service interval and WSI7 were prolonged for sows weaned during the hot and rainy season. Reproductive performance was significantly unfavorably influenced by elevated temperature and heat index after mating (NTB and FR) or during lactation (WSI).  相似文献

Crossbred gilts and sows (n=116) were used for the collection of 1-cell zygotes for DNA microinjection and transfer. Retrospectively, estrus synchronization and superovulation schemes were evaluated to assess practicality for zygote collection. Four synchronization and superovulation procedures were used: 1) sows were observed for natural estrous behavior; 1000 IU human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) was administered at the onset of estrus (NAT); 2) cyclic gilts were synchronized with 17.6 mg altrenogest (ALT)/day for 15 to 19 days followed by superovulation with 1500 IU pregnant mares serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and 500 IU hCG (LALT); 3) gilts between 11 and 16 days of the estrous cycle received 17.6 mg ALT for 5 to 9 days and PMSG and hCG were used to induce superovulation (SALT); and 4) precocious ovulation was induced in prepubertal gilts with PMSG and hCG (PRE). A total of 505 DNA microinjected embryos transferred into 17 recipients produced 7 litters and 50 piglets, of which 8 were transgenic. The NAT sows had less (P < 0.05) ovarian activity than gilts synchronized and superovulated by all the other procedures. Synchronization treatments with PMSG did not differ (P > 0.05) in the number of corpora hemorrhagica or unovulated follicles, but SALT and PRE treaments had higher ovulation rates than LALT (24.7 +/- 2.9, 24.3 +/- 1.8 vs 11.6 +/- 2.7 ovulations; X +/- SEM). The SALT and PRE treatments yielded 12.3 +/- 2.6 and 17.7 +/- 1.7 zygotes. Successful transgenesis was accomplished with SALT and PRE procedures for estrus synchronization and superovulation.  相似文献

At present, it is possible to transfer pig embryos directly into the uterine body of sows by nonsurgical procedures. The aim of this study was to develop a procedure for nonsurgical embryo transfer (ET) into the upper part of one uterine horn in gilts and sows. In experiment 1, 29 gilts and 43 sows were used. Intrauterine insertions took place for each female at days 4-6 of the estrous cycle (D0 = onset of estrus). An artificial insemination (AI) spirette was inserted into the cervix to assist with the guidance of a modified flexible catheter originally developed for deep intrauterine insemination in pigs. The flexible catheter length inserted anterior to the inserted AI spirette was 43.0 +/- 1.7 cm. The time required to complete the procedure was affected by the type of female (P < 0.001) and by the difficulties encountered for inserting the catheter (P < 0.001). However, when no or minor difficulties were encountered during the insertion of the catheter (in approximately 70 and 80% of gilts and sows, respectively), the time required to complete the procedure did not differ between gilts (2.5 +/- 0.1 min) and sows (2.3 +/- 0.1 min). In experiment 2, 24 to 31 fresh morulae and/or blastocysts were transferred to each of 24 recipients. Seventeen animals (70.8%) farrowed an average of 6.9 +/- 0.7 piglets, of which 0.6 +/- 0.3 piglets were born dead. In conclusion, the procedure described in this study offers new possibilities to transfer embryos nonsurgically to the uterine horn of pigs.  相似文献

Eighty-five prepuberal, crossbred gilts received, ad libitum, a diet containing 0 or 10 ppm purified zearalenone for 30 d beginning at 145 to 193 d of age. At the end of this period all gilts were placed on the control diet and exposed daily to a mature boar for 60 d. Within 3 to 5 d of zearalenone ingestion, gilts showed marked vulval swelling and reddening, which continued for the 30-d feeding period. Thereafter symptoms slowly subsided. Zearalenone treated gilts showed first estrus significantly later than controls (P < 0.05), but the proportion of gilts showing estrus within 60 d of boar exposure was similar (P > 0.05). The length of the first estrous cycle was not affected by the ingestion of zearalenone before puberty (P > 0.05). In a second study, 65 multiparous, crossbred sows were full-fed twice daily a ration containing 0 or 10 ppm of purified zearalenone beginning 14 d before weaning. Postweaning, all sows were fed the control diet, were checked for estrus daily, and inseminated at the first postweaning estrus. Neither sows nor gilts from their litters exhibited signs of hyperestrogenism during treatment. Weaning to estrus interval was significantly extended in zearalenone treated sows (P < 0.05), but all other variables of fertility assessed were similar. These data suggest that zearalenone ingestion before puberty delays the stimulation of puberty associated with boar exposure, but does not affect subsequent cyclicity if zearalenone is removed from the ration. Similarly, zearalenone ingestion during lactation delays the return to estrus after weaning, but does not affect subsequent fertility when removed from the ration at weaning.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of teat number and interval at first estrus and mating on litter size in Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire gilts. Gilt body weight at first estrus was from 101.5 kg to 115.3 kg and gilts normally attained puberty at 170.5-181.5 days of age. Breed differences among Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire in body weight and age at first estrus and mating were found. Total teat number of Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire were 12.5, 14.9 and 13.7, respectively. Teat interval from pectoral to inguinal region and from left to right at first estrus and mating did not show any differences among the breeds. In conclusion, 14 or more teat number compared to 11-13 teat number in gilts increased litter size at birth and at 21 day weaning.  相似文献

A series of experiments was performed to investigate the influence of progesterone at Days 2 and 3 of pregnancy on conceptus development and uterine capacity. In experiment 1, unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) white crossbred gilts were given no treatment, estradiol valerate (5 mg given on Days 11 and 12), or progesterone (200 mg/day on Days 2 and 3 after mating). On Day 105 of pregnancy, each fetus and its associated placenta were weighed, and the number of live and dead fetuses was recorded for each litter. Early progesterone treatment reduced (P < 0.05) litter size (a measure of uterine capacity in UHO gilts). In experiment 2, intact white crossbred gilts were mated, given no treatment or progesterone treatment on Days 2 and 3 of pregnancy, and farrowed. Progesterone treatment decreased (P < 0.05) pregnancy rates. In pregnant gilts, progesterone had no effect on the number of live or stillborn piglets at birth, and gestation length was decreased (P < 0.05). Progesterone treatment did not affect the number of large or small piglets. In experiment 3, intact gilts were mated at estrus and then received 1). no treatment or treatment with 2). 100 mg, 3). 200 mg, or 4). 400 mg mifepristone (also known as RU486) on Day 2 of pregnancy. On Day 11 of pregnancy, both uterine horns were flushed, the number and diameter of each conceptus was recorded, and the flushed material was assayed for total protein and acid phosphatase. The 400 mg mifepristone treatment decreased conceptus diameter (P < 0.05) and total protein (P = 0.06) in the uterine flushings. In experiment 4, UHO gilts were mated at estrus, injected with either corn oil (control) or mifepristone (400 mg) on Day 2 of pregnancy, and killed on Day 105 of pregnancy, and the number and weight of live fetuses and placentas was recorded. In contrast to the effect of progesterone treatment, mifepristone decreased uterine capacity by decreasing the number of small conceptuses. These data suggest that progesterone concentrations on Days 2 and 3 of pregnancy in swine influence the rate of conceptus development during early pregnancy and uterine capacity during later pregnancy.  相似文献

Semen characteristics of Chinese Fengjing, CHinese Meishan and American Yorkshire boars were examined. Samples were collected from 24 boars: 6 Fengjing, 12 Meishan and 6 Yorkshire. Three semen characteristics and 6 biochemical evaluations of semen or seminal plasma were analyzed. The whole semen parameters measured were gelatinous (gel) and gel-free volume and progressive motility. Fengjing boars were higher in gel volume than Meishan (P < 0.05) but not Yorkshire boars (P > 0.25), while Yorkshire boars were higher than Meishan boars in gel volume (P < 0.10). The gel-free volume was higher in Yorkshire and Fengjing boars than Meishan boars (P < 0.10), but Fengjing gel-free volumes did not differ from Yorkshire gel-free volumes (P > 0.80). However, the only difference detected for progressive motility was between Fengjing and Meishan boars (78.5 vs 74.5%; P < 0.10). Sperm concentration was higher in Meishan than Yorkshire boars (P < 0.01) although these breeds did not differ from Fengjing boars (P > 0.18). The biochemical messurements made were fructose, galactose, inositol, total carbohydrate and total protein in seminal plasma and pH in gel-free semen. Fengjing boars had higher concentrations of galactose in seminal plasma than Meishan or Yorkshire boars (P < 0.05), while Meishan seminal plasma had higher galactose concentrations than Yorkshire seminal plasma (P < 0.10). Fructose, inositol and total carbohydrate concentrations were all higher in Fengjing and Meishan seminal plasma than Yorkshire seminal plasma (P < 0.05). Fengjing seminal plasma had higher levels of inositol than Meishan seminal plasma (769 vs 566 mg/100 ml; P < 0.10). Furthermore, Fengjing and Meishan semen had similar fructose and total carbohydrate concentrations (P > 0.80). The pH level and total protein concentration did not differ among the 3 breeds (P > 0.30). This study indicated that breed differences were detected for several seminal parameters, although no single breed had consistantly higher values for all the parameters measured.  相似文献

The aims of this study were: (1) to evaluate the effect of the number of previous estrus of recipient gilts on effectiveness of intrauterine insertion of a flexible catheter designed for non-surgical deep intrauterine catheterization during diestrus in pigs; and (2) to determine the farrowing rate and the litter size after non-surgical deep intrauterine embryo transfer (ET) of porcine blastocysts vitrified by the open pulled straw (OPS) method. In experiment 1, 27 large white hyperprolific gilts (LWh) with 2-6 previous estrus were used. Intrauterine insertions of the flexible catheter were carried out at day 5.5-6 of the estrous cycle (D0=onset of estrus). During insertions, no or only moderate reactions were observed in 88.9% of gilts and was not related (P >0.05) to the number of estrus prior to the insertion periods. The number of the estrus had a significant effect (P <0.05) on the difficulties found during the procedure. In the 100% of gilts with two estrus (N=6) it was not possible to insert the flexible catheter through the cervix. In gilts with three or more estrus, it was possible to pass the cervix and to progress along a uterine horn in 80.9% of the cases. In 86.7% of the gilts, the tip of the flexible catheter achieved the second or third quarter of the uterine horn. In experiment 2, following non-surgical deep intrauterine transfer of 20 vitrified/warmed blastocysts, 9 Meishan recipients (42.9%) farrowed an average of 5.4 +/- 0.8 piglets (range 3-9) of which 0.6 +/- 0.3 piglets (range 0-2) were born dead. In conclusion, this study shows that it is possible to obtain birth of piglets following non-surgical deep intrauterine embryo transfer (ET) of vitrified/warmed blastocysts. Non-surgical deep intrauterine ET and OPS vitrification methods are promising procedures to be used together for the introduction of new genetic material in a farm.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in a large Croatian "built up unit". The objective of the study was to determine if an indoor modified eros centre (MEC) compared to indoor or outdoor group housing of gilts, influenced the onset of puberty of gilts and the reproductive performance of the evaluated females (n = 783) over four parities. The gilts were from the same nucleus herd. Gilts of same age (140-150 days of age), body condition (body condition score of 3-4) and similar genetics (four-way cross females), during the same season (January to April 1999), were randomly divided at arrival into three groups and treated as follows:MEC gilts (n = 279): These were placed into indoor MEC pens in groups of 8-10. The gilts had continuous fenceline contact to boars (one boar to two groups of gilts, boars were changed daily) and to shortly weaned oestrous sows. Gilts were regrouped and dislocated at 10-day intervals. Outdoor gilts (n = 263): These were kept in groups of 8-10 on a large pasture (80-100 m2 per group). The animals had fenceline contact to mature boar for 5-10 min daily. Control indoor gilts (n = 241): These were housed indoors in large pens in groups of 8-10. The animals had fenceline contact to mature boars for 5-10 min daily. Each outdoor group had an insulated hut with straw bedding. All gilts were fed ad libitum with the same commercial diet. Housing gilts in MEC resulted in earlier (P < 0.001) onset of estrus (MEC: 174.8 +/- 2.4 days, indoor group housing: 207.6 +/- 4.1 days, outdoor group housing: 187.4 +/- 2.1 days) and lower (P < 0.001) farrowing rate to first service (MEC: 70.97%, indoor group housing: 89.73%, outdoor group housing: 89.62%). Farrowing rate of regularly returning MEC gilts to second service was 95.00%. First total-born litter size, first liveborn litter size, first wean-to-estrus interval (WEI), percent of sows bred after first weaning, second total-born litter size, second liveborn litter size, average third and fourth total-born and liveborn litter size, number of sows having four litters, number of litters per sow, total number of pigs per sow, total number of liveborn pigs per sow showed no significant differences between the groups. More (P < 0.05) sows were culled in outdoor group. Compared to MEC and outdoor housing, indoor housed sows suffered higher (P < 0.05) percentage of anoestrus.  相似文献

Corpora lutea were marked with suture in 24 crossbred gilts on day 7 to 9 of the estrous cycle (first day of estrus = 0). All gilts were injected with 5 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) daily from day 10 to 15 to extend the lifespan of corpora lutea, then the gilts were randomly assigned to two groups. On day 20, the 12 gilts of Group 1 were injected with 10 mg PGF, and the 12 gilts of Group 2 were injected with saline. Ovaries were recovered 10 to 13 days after PGF or saline injection. Ten gilts in Group 1 displayed estrus 5 ± 0.7 days after PGF injection, but only two gilts in Group 2 displayed estrus during the experimental period. In gilts that displayed estrus, all marked CL had regressed. Marked CL were still present in all 12 gilts that failed to exhibit estrus during the experimental period. These results show that in the pig, PGF caused regression of CL that were maintained beyond the normal luteal phase of the estrous cycle by EB treatment.  相似文献

The data presented here represent a retrospective analysis of information gathered while collecting data for other studies on miniature pigs. Two different breeds of miniature pigs, NIH and Sinclair, were used in this study. The NIH females were gilts, while Sinclair females included both gilts and sows. The pigs were checked twice a day for estrus and were mated at 12 and 24 h after the onset of estrus. One- and 2-cell stage embryos were collected on Day 2; while 4-cell, 8-cell, compact morula and blastocyst stage embryos were collected on Days 2.7, 3.5, 4.3 and 6.0, respectively. The percentage of recovery of these embryos was dependent upon the surgeon (P = 0.002) and the stage of development (P = 0.018). The number of ovulations was higher (P < 0.04) in the Sinclair sows (10.4 +/- 0.60) than in the Sinclair gilts (8.9 +/- 0.67) and in the NIH gilts (8.3 +/- 0.67). When the NIH gilts were divided into swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) haplotypes, it was found that SLA(dd) gilts (8.5 +/- 0.43) had more ovulations (P = 0.02) than SLA(ad) gilts (6.8 +/- 0.57). Some animals were treated with Regumate to synchronize estrus. The Sinclair gilts (7.8 +/- 0.28) and NIH gilts (7.7 +/- 0.27) took more days (P < 0.07) to show estrus than the Sinclair sows (6.3 +/- 0.58) after the removal of Regumate. Four of the animals had reproductive tract abnormalities; more specifically, a blind uterine horn or oviduct that was not patent with the other horn. The reproductive performance of gilts and sows from two regions in Norway was investigated in a retrospective analysis of data from the litter recording system. In the Northern region (North; between 65°N and 71°N), there are extreme shifts in natural photoperiod between winter and summer. In the Southern region (South; between 59°N and 60°30′N), photoperiodic changes are less dramatic.

Gilts were 8 days older at first mating or insemination in the North than in the South (P<0.01). A significantly lower proportion of sows in the North were mated or inseminated within 5 days post-weaning than in the South, a difference present both among primiparous and multiparous sows (P<0.01). Overall farrowing rate in the North was lower than in the South, but litter size (total number born) among those pigs that farrowed was larger. After correction for year, month, breed and age at first service, there were still lower odds of farrowing for gilts in North than in South. Neither for primiparous nor multiparous sows were regional differences in farrowing probability significant when year, month, breed and weaning to service interval were included in the model. Gilts and primiparous sows had a lower probability of farrowing following insemination during summer or autumn months, but service month was not significantly related to the farrowing probability of multiparous sows.

For gilts, litter size was positively related to age at first service. For sows, litter size was lowest at weaning to service intervals between 6 and 10 days. Total numbers of piglets born per litter were estimated to be 0.36, 0.38 and 0.55 larger in the North than in the South (differences in least square means; gilts, primiparous sows and multiparous sows, respectively) (P<0.01). Time-dependent expression of functional proteins in fetal ovaries is important to understand the developmental process of the ovary. This study was carried out to enhance our understanding of the developmental process of porcine fetal ovaries and to better address the differences in fetal ovary development of local and foreign pigs. The objective of the present study is to test the expression of key proteins that regulate the growth and development of fetal ovaries in Meishan and Yorkshire porcine breeds by using proteomics technology. Six Meishan and 6 Yorkshire pregnant gilts were used in this experiment. Fetal ovaries were obtained from Yorkshire and Meishan gilts on days 55 and 90 of the gestation period. Using 2D-DIGE (two dimensional-difference in gel electrophoresis) analysis, the results showed that there are about 1551 and 1400 proteins in gilt fetal ovaries on days 55 and 90, respectively of the gestation. Using MALDI TOF-TOF MS analysis, 27 differentially expressed proteins were identified in the fetal ovaries of the 2 breeds on day 55 of gestation, and a total of 18 proteins were identified on day 90 of gestation. These differentially expressed proteins were involved in the regulation of biological processes (cell death, stress response, cytoskeletal proteins) and molecular functions (enzyme regulator activity). We also found that alpha-1-antitrypsin, actin, vimentin, and PP2A proteins promote the formation of primordial follicles in the ovaries of Yorkshire pigs on day 55 of gestation while low expression heat shock proteins and high expression alpha-fetoproteins (AFP) may promote Meishan fetal ovarian follicular development on day 90 of gestation. These findings provide a deeper understanding of how reduced expression of heat shock proteins and increased expression of AFP can significantly reduce the risk of reproductive disease in obese Meishan sows. Our study also shows how these proteins can increase the ovulation rate and may be responsible for the low reproductive efficiency reported in other obese breeds. The ovarian developmental potential was found to be greater in Meishan pigs than in Yorkshire pigs.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of lactation length (LL) on weaning-to-service interval (WSI), and the effect of LL and WSI on the subsequent farrowing rate and litter size among purebred Landrace and Yorkshire sows under tropical conditions. The variation in litter weight at weaning (LWW) was also studied. Data were analyzed from three purebred sow herds located in the central part of Thailand, including sows weaned during the period from January 1993 to December 1996. Data were analyzed with analysis of variance using SAS software. The procedure MIXED was used for analysis of the continuous outcome variables (namely LL, LWW, WSI, number of total born and number of live born piglets). The GLIMMIX macro was used for analysis of the categorical outcome variable, farrowing rate (FR). In the statistical analyses, WSI was grouped into 7 groups, when it was an independent variable, as follows: 1 to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, to 10, and 11 to 21 days. Lactation length was grouped into 4 groups as follows: 17 to 24, 25 to 27, 28 to 30 and 31 to 35 days. Parities were grouped into 4 groups as follows: 1, 2, 3 + 4, and 5 to 8. Landrace sows had significantly higher LWW (P < 0.001) compared with Yorkshire sows (56.1 vs. 53.6 kg). The LL was significantly (P < 0.05) shorter during the cool season than during the other seasons while no difference was found in LWW between the hot and the cool season. The LL had no effect on WSI, FR and litter sizes. The FR was significantly lower when the WSI was 7 to 10 days than when the WSI was 1 to 6 days. An increase in WSI between Days 9 to 10 and Day 21 resulted in a significant increase in FR. Subsequent litter size decreased by about 0.5 piglets when the WSI increased from 1 to 5 days to 6 to 7 days. Thereafter, litter size increased as the WSI increased from 9 to 10 days to 21 days.  相似文献

Body weight of Large White gilts was greater at birth, weaning, 5 months of age and at slaughter; however, Meishan gilts reached puberty at an earlier age (91 +/- 2 vs 192 +/- 3 days, P less than 0.01), had longer periods of oestrus (60 +/- 2 vs 49 +/- 2 h, P less than 0.01) and experienced more oestrous cycles (7 +/- 0.4 vs 4 +/- 0.4, P less than 0.01) before slaughter. The interoestrous interval was longer (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts (19.8 +/- 0.2 vs 19.1 +/- 0.2 days). At slaughter, uterine length (P less than 0.05), uterine weight, width of uterine horns, endometrial surface area, endometrial weight and percentage of uterine weight represented by endometrium was greater (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts. However, breed differences were not significant when slaughter weight was included in analyses as a covariate. This indicated that development of the reproductive tract was proportionate to body weight at slaughter for each breed. When body weight at slaughter was included as a covariate, effects of day of the oestrous cycle and pregnancy on uterine width, uterine weight, endometrial surface area and endometrial weight were detected (P less than 0.01) and for uterine length there was a day-by-status interaction (P less than 0.01). Total number of CL (P less than 0.05) and total ovarian weight (P less than 0.05) were also greater for Large White gilts independent of body weight at slaughter. There were more CL in left ovaries for Meishan (8.1 +/- 0.4 vs 6.6 +/- 0.4) and Large White (8.4 +/- 0.4 vs 7.9 +/- 0.5) gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
