The excessive and unsustainable exploitation of our marine resources has led to the promotion of marine reserves as a fisheries management tool. Marine reserves, areas in which fishing is restricted or prohibited, can offer opportunities for the recovery of exploited stock and fishery enhancement. This study examines the impact of the creation of marine protected areas, from both economic and biological perspectives. The consequences of reserve establishment on the long-run equilibrium fish biomass and fishery catch levels are evaluated. We include reserve size as control variable to maximize catch at equilibrium. A continuous time model is used to simulate the effects of reserve size on fishing catch. Fish movements between the sites is assumed to take place at a faster time scale than the variation of the stock and the change of the fleet size. We take advantage of these two time scales to derive a reduced model governing the dynamics of the total fish stock and the fishing effort. Simulation results suggest that the establishment of a protected marine reserve will always lead to an increase in total fish biomass, an optimal size of a marine reserve can achieve to maximize the catch at equilibrium.  相似文献

L-selectin requires a threshold shear to enable leukocytes to tether to and roll on vascular surfaces. Transport mechanisms govern flow-enhanced tethering, whereas force governs flow-enhanced rolling by prolonging the lifetimes of L-selectin-ligand complexes (catch bonds). Using selectin crystal structures, molecular dynamics simulations, site-directed mutagenesis, single-molecule force and kinetics experiments, Monte Carlo modeling, and flow chamber adhesion studies, we show that eliminating a hydrogen bond to increase the flexibility of an interdomain hinge in L-selectin reduced the shear threshold for adhesion via two mechanisms. One affects the on-rate by increasing tethering through greater rotational diffusion. The other affects the off-rate by strengthening rolling through augmented catch bonds with longer lifetimes at smaller forces. By forcing open the hinge angle, ligand may slide across its interface with L-selectin to promote rebinding, thereby providing a mechanism for catch bonds. Thus, allosteric changes remote from the ligand-binding interface regulate both bond formation and dissociation.  相似文献

1. Invasive species frequently have adverse impacts on native communities and ecosystems. Management options are often limited. Our goal is to evaluate the effect of intensive trapping and fish predation on the population dynamics of an invasive crayfish. 2. From 2001 to 2005, we removed invasive rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) by trapping in Sparkling Lake in northern WI. In addition, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources restricted harvest of fish species known to consume crayfish, thereby increasing predation on crayfish that are too small to trap. 3. After an initial increase, catch rates of rusty crayfish declined by approximately 95%, from 11 crayfish per trap per day in 2002 to 0.65 in 2004. The catch rate in 2005 remained low at 0.5 crayfish per trap. Females comprised nearly 50% of the catch from 2002 to 2004. Unlike rusty crayfish in Sparkling Lake, catch rates of O. rusticus and Orconectes propinquus in three nearby lakes increased or remained relatively constant over the 5‐year removal period. 4. We also examined the influence of habitat and temperature on crayfish catch rates. Catch rates were highest at water temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and on cobble, log or macrophyte habitats that may serve as refuge from fish predation. 5. Five summers of intensive trapping and fisheries management practices reduced abundances, but did not extirpate rusty crayfish in Sparkling Lake. To determine the potential of trapping as a management option for invasive crayfishes, these methods must be tested in other systems.  相似文献

Fisheries management is conducted to achieve sustainable use of fishery resources, mainly through regulation of fishing activities. For almost a decade, the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) struggled to reach agreement on a total allowable catch (TAC) for southern bluefin tuna (SBT) because of stock assessment uncertainties. To address this, in 2002 the CCSBT commenced development of a management procedure (MP), a pre-agreed set of rules to determine how the TAC will be adjusted as new monitoring data become available. The CCSBT Scientific Committee tested various candidate MPs using operating models which simulate fish population and fishery dynamics as well as incorporate process, observation, and model uncertainties. Candidate MPs were evaluated using performance measures related to the following management objectives: maximize catches, avoid stock collapse, and minimize interannual catch variation. Of the MPs explored, some relied solely on empirical data [i.e., adjusted TAC based on catch per unit effort (CPUE) trends], whereas others were more complicated, based on population models. In 2005, the CCSBT adopted a model-based MP that realized a moderate catch with low variability and avoided stock collapse. This MP struck a compromise between the risk-prone and risk-averse standpoints of the different stakeholders. However, despite this concerted scientific effort, the MP was not implemented because, shortly after its adoption, it became evident that historical catches may have been substantially underreported. This complication necessitates returning to near the beginning of the development process. MP approaches have various advantages and challenges to be explored further. However, it is essential to lessen human-introduced uncertainty (such as catch misreporting) by enhanced enforcement, and to increase management robustness to biological uncertainties by implementing MPs.  相似文献

Rodent dynamics was once equated with 3–4 year cycles but is now understood to be many-facetted. In a typology of dynamics, including stable and resource-driven populations, extensive cycles and travelling waves appear to have many features in common. They differ mainly in the spatial extent of the cycles or waves. Both types of dynamics demonstrate lag phases. Lagged dynamics may be caused by several agents but specialist and nomadic predators are particularly evaluated in this treatise. The main conclusion is that present understanding of predator effects is limited and partly contradictory. The understanding of local dynamics, on a km2-scale, might be facilitated by considering most rodent populations as partially subdivided with patches, on a hectare-scale, differing in quality and release of dispersers; an overflow to suboptimal patches (a ‘mass effect’) may emerge at fairly unlimited immigration. Dynamics may vary along several gradients, and spatially and temporally limited studies may only catch fragments of extensive population changes. Detailed local studies have to be complemented with extensive monitoring of dynamics.  相似文献

Catch crops can effectively decrease nitrate leaching in arable cropping systems but their long-term impacts on nitrogen mineralization are not well known. This study quantified the effects of continuous catch crops on net N mineralization, crop N uptake, crop N use efficiency and N leaching in three long-term (13?C17?years) field experiments in northern France. Mustard was grown every year at Boigneville, radish every year at Thibie and ryegrass every 2?years at Kerlavic. The mean N content of catch crop residues at these sites was 33, 36 and 35?kg ha?1 yr?1 and their mean C:N ratio was 13, 17 and 28, respectively. Net mineralization was calculated with a mass balance of soil mineral N using measured inputs and outputs. Catch crop establishment enhanced annual mineralization by on average 26, 18 and 9?kg N ha?1 yr?1 respectively during the 13?C17?year period. The difference in mineralization rate between catch crop and control treatments (extra mineralization) was positive from the first year at Boigneville, whereas it was negative or nil during the first 3?C5?years at Thibie and Kerlavic. At the latter sites, the extra mineralization rate increased significantly over time at a rate of 2.0 and 2.6?kg N ha?1 yr?2. At the end of the experiment, cumulative extra mineralization represented 72%, 60% and 23% of the total N added by catch crop residues at Boigneville, Thibie and Kerlavic, respectively. Repeated catch crops significantly increased N uptake and N use efficiency by main crops at Kerlavic and Thibie, but not at Boigneville. The efficiency of catch crops in reducing N leaching persisted over the years at all sites. A model simulating C and N dynamics during catch crop decomposition was able to reproduce the pattern of extra N mineralization kinetics with the various catch crop species, but underestimated the range of variation between sites. Better predictions were obtained when C or N inputs due to catch crops were increased by 10?C57%, suggesting that the actual inputs could be markedly greater than those measured in catch crop residues. According to the model, the C:N ratio of catch crop residues largely explained differences in mineralization due to different catch crop species.  相似文献

We analyze a coupled socioeconomic and bioeconomic dynamics model for fisheries management in a local community. In the model, fishermen choose to cooperate with the fisheries management rule or not at each time step, depending on the utilities of each option. The social dynamics is coupled with the dynamics of the stock biomass. Fishermen’s utility basically depends on their catch, and the utility function of the noncooperative option is penalized by a psychological punishment, “social pressure”, which is affected by both the fraction of cooperative players and stock abundance. We classify social pressure into two categories: pressure originating from the inside and from the outside of the community. We develop a utility function with these social pressures and analyze the coupled dynamics. Our results show that all fishermen can end up cooperating with the management rule if both sources of internal and external social pressure have sufficient effect. The results imply that psychological aspects on fishermen can have an important role for successful management of local fisheries.  相似文献

Nutrient and water management is crucially important in shallow-rooted vegetable production systems characterized by high input and high environmental risk. A 2-year field experiment on greenhouse cucumber double-cropping systems examined the effects of root zone nitrogen management and planting of sweet corn as a catch crop in the summer fallow period on cucumber yield and soil Nmin dynamics compared to conventional practices. Cucumber fruit yields were not significantly affected by root zone N management and catch crop planting despite a decrease in N fertilizer application of 53% compared to conventional N management. Soil Nmin content to a depth of 0.9 m decreased markedly and root zone (0–0.3 m) soil Nmin content was maintained at about 200 kg N ha?1. Root zone N management efficiently and directly reduced apparent N losses by 44% and 45% in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Sweet corn, the summer catch crop, depleted Nmin residue in the soil profile of 1.8 m at harvest of winter–spring season cucumber by 304–333 kg N ha?1, which contributed 19–22% reduction in N loss. Compared to conventional N management, N loss was reduced by 56% under root zone N management and catch crop planting.  相似文献

Originating from a viewpoint that complex/chaotic dynamics would play an important role in biological system including brains, chaotic dynamics introduced in a recurrent neural network was applied to control. The results of computer experiment was successfully implemented into a novel autonomous roving robot, which can only catch rough target information with uncertainty by a few sensors. It was employed to solve practical two-dimensional mazes using adaptive neural dynamics generated by the recurrent neural network in which four prototype simple motions are embedded. Adaptive switching of a system parameter in the neural network results in stationary motion or chaotic motion depending on dynamical situations. The results of hardware implementation and practical experiment using it show that, in given two-dimensional mazes, the robot can successfully avoid obstacles and reach the target. Therefore, we believe that chaotic dynamics has novel potential capability in controlling, and could be utilized to practical engineering application.  相似文献

Unused inorganic nitrogen (Ninorg) left in agricultural soils will typically leach to deeper soil layers. If it moves below the root zone it will be lost from the system, but the depth of the root zone depends on the crop species grown. In this experiment we studied the effect of 3-year crop sequences, with different combinations of deep-rooted and shallow-rooted crops, on soil Ninorg dynamics to 2.5 m soil depth and the possibility of crop utilization of N leached to deep soil layers. We grew ten different crop sequences for 3 years. The crops and catch crops grown were selected to allow different sequences of deep-rooted and shallow-rooted crops. Very different rooting depths were obtained, from only 0.5 m (leek), to ∼1.0 m (ryegrass and barley), 1.5 m (red beet), 2.0 m (fodder radish and white cabbage) and more than 2.5 m by the chicory catch crop. The results showed a significant retention of Ninorg within the 2.5 m soil profile from one year to the next, but the retained N had leached to deeper parts of the profile during the winter season. Only little Ninorg was retained over two winter seasons. The retention in the deeper soil layers allowed Ninorg to be taken up by succeeding deep-rooted main crops or catch crops. The effects of crop rooting depth on Ninorg in the subsoil layers from 1.0 to 2.5 m were striking. White cabbage reduced Ninorg below 1.0 m with up to 113 kg N ha-1 during its growth. Grown after catch crops, leek and red beet left on average 60 kg N ha−1 less below 1.0 m than leek and red beet grown without a preceding catch crop. We conclude that it is possible to design crop rotations with improved nitrogen use efficiency by using the differences in crop rooting patterns; deep-rooted crops or catch crops can be used to recover Ninorg leached after previous crops, and catch crops can be grown before shallow-rooted crops to lift the deep Ninorg up to layers where these crops have their roots.  相似文献

One strategy for estimating total catch is to employ two separate surveys that independently estimate total fishing effort and catch rate with the estimator for total catch formed by their product. Survey designs for estimating catch rate often involve interviewing the fishermen during their fishing episodes. Such roving designs result in incomplete episode data and characteristically have employed a model in which the catch rate is assumed to be constant over time. This article extends the problem to that of estimating total catch in the presence of a declining catch rate due, e.g., to gear saturation. Using a gill net fishery as an example, a mean-of-ratios type of estimator for the catch rate together with its variance estimator are developed. Their performance is examined using simulations, with special attention given to effects of restrictions on the roving survey window. Finally, data from a Fraser River gill net fishery are used to illustrate the use of the proposed estimator and to compare results with those from an estimator based on a constant catch rate.  相似文献

As part of a program to minimize the accidental transportation of Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) through cargo aircraft to areas where they are not established, a 4-yr trapping project was initiated to study the relative distribution and dynamics of the beetles along a trap line around the Indianapolis International Airport. Land use influence on beetle abundance (trap catch) was assessed using a geographic information system. Trap catch was consistently high in some locations and low in others. In general, high trap catches occurred near agronomic land planted with corn or soybeans, which are both preferred hosts of adult beetles. Low trap catches generally occurred in areas lacking preferred host plants. The amount of agronomic land within 500 m of the traps was always positively correlated with trap catch. Average trap catches were highly correlated by location from year to year, indicating stability of the relative distribution of the beetles along the trap line. Because high trap catches consistently occurred in the same locations, it can be inferred that trapping can be an effective method to monitor Japanese beetle populations. Taking airport-owned agronomic land out of corn and soybean production near the cargo terminals may reduce beetle activity in these areas.  相似文献

Understanding the impact of fisheries on the commercial fish stocks requires detailed catch statistics and data on the dynamics of fleet and catch effort, at least before industrial fishing started. Most time-series on the fleet dynamics start after the 1980s, at times when major changes in fleet characteristics had already taken place. In the present paper, the results of the integration of data on fleet size (from 1830), tonnage (from 1842) and engine power (kW, from 1912) of the Belgian sea fisheries fleet are presented. The decrease in fleet size and changes in overall tonnage and engine power since the beginning of the reconstructed time-series, are quantified. The data show that the decrease in fleet size (?85 %) and in overall engine power (?5 %) was compensated by an increase in average tonnage per vessel (×10 increase) and in average engine power per vessel (×6 increase). The overall fishing effort of the fleet expressed as the total number of days spent at sea has decreased by approximately ?84 % between 1938 and 2010, while the average amount of fish landed per day per vessel (1,000 kg in 2008–2010) has at least doubled in the same period. The data reconstruction provides a unique view on the dynamics in the sea fisheries fleet of Belgium over 180 years and the political and social events associated to these changes.  相似文献

A rapid semi-quantitative ecological risk assessment method (productivity and susceptibility analysis) indicated that, despite its low biological productivity, the Port Jackson shark Heterodontus portusjacksoni is at low risk to all fishing methods in far-eastern Victoria, Australia, under the present fishing practices, because of its low catch susceptibility. The risk to this population, however, would increase if the shark gillnet fishery operating in the region were to retain the species as a by-product. Demographic analysis indicated that the species has medium intrinsic population growth rate and potential rebound in comparison with other chondrichthyan species, juveniles have higher elasticity than mature females and both juvenile and mature females have higher elasticities than hatchlings. Because of its low biological productivity and moderate resilience to the effects of fishing, cautious management measures will be necessary to ensure the sustainable use of H. portusjacksoni if its marketing increases in the future. Information on the dynamics of a population that is valuable to provide management advice can be obtained through demographic methods, but rapid assessment methods can also provide complementary information on the effects of fishing by considering the catch susceptibility of the population to each fishing method.  相似文献

When evaluating fishing gear catches, the focus is often on a few species as opposed to the entire catch. In some fisheries this can lead to ignoring major part of catch composition. Thus, there is a need for a more holistic approach when evaluating the ecological impact of using a specific fishing gear and when comparing two or more gears. In this context, it is relevant to have a method that describes the total catch and quantifies proportions of the catch being wanted and unwanted. In this study, we outline such a method and demonstrate its applicability to catch data from a small-scale coastal gillnet fishery targeting European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, Linnaeus, 1758) by comparing catch composition when using nylon and biodegradable gillnets. The results showed no significant differences in catch composition between gillnets made of the two materials. Therefore, the catch composition obtained using the more environmentally friendly biodegradable materials does not represent a barrier in this specific gillnet fishery. However, species selectivity of gillnets is still of concern as the primary target species constituted only half of the total catch composition in numbers while the rest was unwanted catch. The presented approach for quantifying and inferring the differences in catch composition can be further applied for assessing the performance of different fishing gears and their modifications.  相似文献

单一种群是目前渔业资源评估的基本假设,但渔业资源常由多个地方种群或产卵种群组成,并且种群间存在交流,构成复合种群。根据复合种群概念,以东、黄海日本鲐为例,对其12种种群动态情况进行了模拟。利用模拟所得的数据及剩余产量模型,分别分析了在复合种群、两独立种群及单一种群假设下所设置的10种评估管理方案,结果表明:(1)基于复合种群假设的评估管理方案与模拟的种群动态一致,在单位捕捞努力量渔获量(CPUE)观测误差较小情况下,该方案为最佳方案,可获得最大可持续产量,但随CPUE观测误差增大,该方案种群灭绝率增大,管理效果随之退化。(2)基于两独立种群假设的评估管理方案均使资源过度开发,不利于资源可持续利用。(3)在单一种群假设下,选择不同CPUE作为资源指数和采用不同捕捞量分配方法的评估管理方案存在过度捕捞和开发不足两种状况,其管理效果受种群本身参数及空间交换率等因素的影响而不同;若采用的CPUE反映部分种群动态信息,则其评估管理方案至少在一种模拟情况下出现种群100%灭绝;若CPUE能反映整个种群资源量的动态变化,且捕捞量能按种群的空间结构进行分配,则管理效果与(1)类似,但不能获得最大可持续产量,若忽略种群的空间结构影响而均匀分配捕捞量,则至少在一种模拟情况下出现种群100%灭绝。据此,对于复合种群的管理,建议:(A)如果种群数据收集及数据精度能得到保证,该资源的评估与管理应基于复合种群假设;(B)如果目前收集种群数据存在较大困难,且CPUE数据存在较大误差,则可采用单一种群假设,但必须设定更保守的捕捞量和采用基于种群空间结构的总许可渔获量(TAC)管理方案;(C)在制定渔业管理政策时,应结合种群生态、数据、模型假设及参数估计方法等方面的不确定性对管理控制规则进行系统的管理策略评价以避免风险。  相似文献

  1. The type of the frequency distribution of catch per tow observed by the Danish trawlers of a fish-meal fleet in the waters off the Bristol Bay during the period from May 1 to 9 in 1960 in discussed.
  2. Catch per tow varied considerably from as much as one ton to ten tons and the tow-time also did markedly tow by tow from one to thirty minutes or longer. Therefore, as a preliminary step to discuss the type of the frequency distribution, we examined whether catch varied depending on the tow-time or not; and we found the catch deviated almost independently of the tow-time.
  3. Here, however much fish might be caught by a two, the part over ten tons was released; consequently, the frequency increased gradually from zero to nine tons and increased abruptly at ten tons but none of the haul could get a better catch than ten tons. And examining the relation between Student's t and the grade of catch in tons (n) in the range from zero to nine tons, we found that such a peculiar type of the frequency distribution as observed actually was derived from the series of the catch well fitted for the normal distribution by the modification due to releasing of a part of catch. This fact evolved, the possible series of the frequencies and the total of the possible catch when no part of catch is released, are estimated.
  4. Then some considerations are given to the problem (1) how high percentage of the catch on the total of the possible catch is obliged to release because of the low weight limit of hauling and (2) to what percentage of the catch we can successfully make into available when we increase the weight limit of hauling to a certain value; and the results is shown in Fig. 3, which tells that (1) 70 to 95 percents of the catch were available in the actual operation and (2) scarecely any increase in catch is expected even if the weight limit of hauling is increased higher than fifteen tons.

Soil as the largest potential natural water reservoir in the Carpathian Basin has increasing importance under conditions of predicted climate change resulting in increase of probability of extreme hydrological events. Soil management changes soil structure and has a major effect on soil water, heat and nutrition regimes. In this study the effect of four tillage treatments in combination with catch crop management was studied on soil hydraulic properties and water regime under semi-arid conditions. Investigations were carried out in a long-term soil tillage experiment established on Calcic Chernozem soil in Hungary. Tillage variants comprised mouldboard ploughing, disking, loosening combined with disking and direct drilling. The crop sequence between September 2003 and September 2004 comprised maize (main crop), rye (catch crop) and pea (forage). In May 2004, disturbed samples and undisturbed soil cores were collected from each tillage treatment/catch crop combination. The main soil physical and hydrophysical properties were determined in laboratory. In each treatment, capacitive soil moisture probes were installed up to 80 cm depth to ensure continuous measurement of soil water content. Total soil water amounts of chosen soil layers and soil water content dynamics as a function of depth were evaluated for selected periods in order to quantify the effect of the studied management systems on soil water regime. The main conclusion from the experiment is that under such (or similar) ecological conditions, the uniform, „over-standardized“ adaptation of tillage methods for soil moisture conservation is rather risky, their application needs special care and the future is for site-specific precision technologies. These are, in combination with catch crop application can be efficient measures of environmental protection and soil structure and water conservation.  相似文献

While the lifetime of conventional receptor-ligand interactions is shortened by tensile mechanical force, some recently discovered interactions, termed catch bonds, can be strengthened by force. Motivated by the search for the underpinning structural mechanisms, we here explore the structural dynamics of the binding site of the bacterial adhesive protein FimH by molecular dynamics and steered molecular dynamics. While the crystal structure of only one FimH conformation has been reported so far, we describe two distinctively different conformations of the mannose-bound FimH binding site. Force-induced dissociation was slowed when the mannose ring rotated such that additional force-bearing hydrogen bonds formed with the base of the FimH binding pocket. The lifetime of the complex was further enhanced significantly by rigidifying this base. We finally show how even sub-angstrom spatial alterations of the hydrogen bonding pattern within the base can lead to significantly decreased bond lifetimes.  相似文献

Catch force in molluscan smooth muscle requires little, if any, energy input and is controlled by the phosphorylation state of the thick filament-associated mini-titin, twitchin. The kinetic parameters of myosin cross-bridge turnover in permeabilized catch muscle, and how they are potentially modified by the catch mechanism, were determined by single turnover measurements on myosin-bound ADP. Under isometric conditions, there are fast and slow components of cross-bridge turnover that probably result from kinetic separation of calcium-bound and calcium-free cross-bridge pools. The structure responsible for catch force maintenance at intermediate [Ca+2] does not alter the processes responsible for the fast and slow components under isometric conditions. Also, there is no measurable turnover of myosin-bound ADP during relaxation of catch force by phosphorylation of twitchin at pCa > 8. The only effects of the catch link on myosin-bound ADP turnover are 1), a small, very slow extra turnover when catch force is maintained at very low [Ca+2] (pCa > 8); and 2), attenuation of the shortening-induced increase in turnover at subsaturating [Ca(+2)]. These limited interactions between the catch link and myosin cross-bridge turnover are consistent with the idea that catch force is maintained by a thick and thin filament linkage other than the myosin cross-bridge.  相似文献
