  1. ACh, dopamine, noradrenaline, 5-HT,l-glutamate, and GABA are widely distributed in cephalopods and probably all function as neurotransmitters; octopamine also occurs and at one site is known to act as a neuromodulator.
  2. Several peptides are also present, as well as nitric oxide synthase.
  3. In the brain and sense organs cholinergic, aminergic, serotonergic and glutamatergic systems seem to be the most important.
  4. ACh is also active in the gut, vascular system and some body muscles: it is generally inhibitory. The ACh receptors are similar to the vertebrate nicotinic type.
  5. The catecholamines are important in the gut and vascular system: they are generally excitatory. The NA receptors are like the α-adrenergic subtype of vertebrates, but the nature of the DA and OA receptors is less certain.
  6. 5-HT is important in the gut but is endogenous in some chromatophore nerves and acts on receptors that seem like the vertebrate 5-HT1 type.
  7. l-glutamate is an excitatory transmitter at the chromatophore (and probably at other) nerve-muscle junctions and is an extremely strong candidate for being the excitatory transmitter at the squid giant synapse. There are NMDA receptors on Schwann-cells but the receptors on neurons and muscles are like the vertebrate kainate type.
  8. Little is known about the mode of action of cephalopod peptides; nor has it ever been shown that they co-exist with conventional transmitters in these animals.
  9. The structure of one (FMRFamide) receptor has been elucidated, but apart from this nothing is known of the molecular biology of receptors in cephalopods.

  1. Using deafferented preparations of the stomatogastric nervous system of spiny lobsters (Panulirus interruptus), we stimulated the central soma of the Anterior Gastric Receptor neuron (AGR) and analyzed sensorimotor integration in the gastric central pattern generator during rhythm production.
  2. Driving AGR to spike tonically at lower frequencies (10–20 /s) accelerated the gastric rhythm, while higher frequencies (>30 /s) suppressed it.
  3. Shorter spike trains in AGR evoked phase-dependent resetting of the gastric rhythm. Repetitive trains could entrain rhythms to both longer and shorter cycle periods. Some pattern-generating effects are consistent with effects upon the lateral gastric neuron, an influential member of the gastric mill network.
  4. AGR affected the burst intensity of many of the gastric neurons in specific, complex ways. Some powerstroke motor neurons were excited because AGR activated excitatory, premotor interneurons (E cells). However, AGR also activated parallel, seemingly inhibitory inputs, whose mechanism remains unclear. Still other effects on motor neurons may be mediated partly by synaptic interactions within the network.
  5. AGR adjusts the timing, strength and coordination of bursts in the motor innervation of all three teeth of the gastric mill, and may act to optimize the force of chewing to different consistencies of food.

In freely moving toads, the temporal discharge patterns of tectal and medullary neurons were observed during prey-catching.
  1. Tectal T5.2 and T8.1 neurons displayed a premotor warming up firing that in the former was addressed specifically to prey orienting or snapping and in the latter generally to almost any kind of body movement.
  2. The temporal discharge patterns of T5.2 neurons during snapping were different from those during orienting toward prey. Snapping started in the peak phase of warming up; firing was immediately terminated during the snap; thereafter some rebound activity was observed. Orienting started after the premotor warming up in the declining phase whilst the neuron kept on firing during orienting and then settled when the orienting movement was completed.
  3. In toads which were not motivated to catch prey — comparabl to immobilized ones — the discharge frequency of T5.2 neurons toward a prey stimulus revealed no such warming up.
  4. Because it is known that prey-selective T5.2 neurons are controlled by pretectal inhibitory influences, the following experiment was conducted: during recording a T5.2 neuron a pretectal lesion was applied ipsilaterally to the recording site. After a few seconds, the neuron showed a strong premotor wanning up in response to any kind of moving object, followed by prey-catching.
  5. In the medulla oblongata, different H-type neurons of the hypoglossal nucleus displayed specific discharge patterns which resembled the tongue protractor and retractor muscle activities; a third type resembled the activity of the genio/sterno-hyoid muscle, which are suggested to stabilize the hyoid bone during snapping.
  6. There were medullary M8-type neurons with properties similar to T8.1.
  7. Snapping could be triggered by electrical stimulation of the optic tectum in the representation of the frontal visual field, but not by stimulation in the hypoglossal nucleus or the adjacent medial reticular formation.
  8. A concept of a neuronal circuit for the coordination of tongue muscle contractions in response to prey is proposed.

Receptor neuron responses to plant volatiles, trapped by head-space procedures, were examined in the pine weevil Hylobius abietis, using gas chromatography linked with electrophysiological recordings from single neurons. Seventy-two receptor neurons were tested 173 times for various plant volatile mixtures, either via a polar or a non-polar column.
  1. All responses appeared as increased firing rates which followed the concentration profiles of the GC-eluted compounds.
  2. The neurons were classified separately for the two column types in 17 and 19 groups respectively, according to the compounds they responded to. It suggests that the plant odour information is encoded by a large, but limited number of receptor neuron types.
  3. Most neurons responded to a limited number of compounds (1–5) and showed a marked best response to one of them, whereas additional responses to several other components which seems to be structurally similar, was recorded for some neurons. It suggests that the plant odour receptor neurons are rather narrowly than broadly tuned, and that each neuron is specialized for receiving information about one or a few related compounds.
  4. Most neurons responded to monoterpenes, whereas the other neurons responded to compounds of other categories.
  5. Both major and minor plant volatile components activated specifically receptor neurons.

  1. A model of a neuronal network has been set up in a digital computer based on histological and biophysical data experimentally obtained from the thalamus; the model includes two populations of neurons interconnected by means of negative feedback; in the model allowance is also made for other sort of interactions.
  2. To test the hypothesis that the alpha-rhythm (8–13 Hz rhythmic activity characteristic of the EEG) is a filtered noise signal the simulated neuronal network was stimulated by random trains of pulses with a Poisson distribution. The density of pulses fired by the simulated neurons was computed as well as the oscillations of the mean membrane potential of the population of simulated neurons. The latter was found to be equivalent to the experimentally obtained alpha rhythms.
  3. In order to test the hypothesis that several noise sources are responsible for thalamo-cortical coherences three simulated neuronal networks were coupled together using several noise sources as secondary inputs. It was shown that although all the networks produced simulated alpha signals with identical spectra they could have significantly different values of coherence depending on the relation between correlated and uncorrelated input signals.
  4. The model was analysed by means of linear systems analysis after introducing the necessary simplifications and approximations. In this way it was possible to evaluate the influence of different physiological or histological parameters upon the statistical properties of the resulting rhythmic activity in an analytical form.
  5. By changing the model parameters it was shown that a family of spectral curves could be obtained which simulated the development of the EEG as function of age from a predominantly low frequency to a clearly rhythmic type of signal. This was shown to depend mainly on the feedback coupling parameters.

The crucial role of glutamate receptors of theN-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) type in many fundamental cortical functions has been firmly established, as has its involvement in several neuropsychiatric diseases, but until recently, very little was known of the anatomical localization of NMDA receptors in the cerebral cortex of mammals. The recent application of molecular biological techniques to the study of NMDA receptors has allowed the production of specific tools, the use of which has much increased our understanding of the localization of NMDA receptors in the cerebral cortex. In particular, immunocytochemical studies on the distribution of cortical NMDA receptors have:
  1. Demonstrated the preferential localization of NMDA receptors in dendritic spines, in line with previous work;
  2. Disclosed a thus far unknown fraction of presynaptic NMDA receptors on both excitatory and inhibitory axon terminals; and
  3. Shown that cortical astrocytes express NMDA receptors.
These studies indicate that the effects of cortical NMDA receptor activation are not caused exclusively by the opening of NMDA channels on neuronal postsynaptic membranes, as previously assumed, and that the activation of presynaptic and glial NMDA receptors can contribute significantly to these effects.  相似文献

A new theory of synaptic function in the nervous system (Dempsher, 1978) is applied to the simplest system for integration of function in the nervous system. This system includes a sensory and motor neuron and three ‘synaptic’ regions associated with those two neurons; a receptor region, an interneuronal spinal synaptic region linking the two neurons, and an effector region. Information is first received and processed at the receptor region. The processing consists of five components:
  1. A highly selective mechanism which allows only that information to enter the receptor system which is appropriate.
  2. The ‘appropriateness’ of the information is determined by the alphabet (miniature potentials) already in that area.
  3. The information entering the system is assembled in a pattern meaningful for the next processing operation.
  4. The assembled information is then ‘disassembled’ into its subunits and mapped into the alphabet (miniature potentials).
  5. These miniature potentials are assembled into another pattern meaningful to fit the role of the receptor region.
  6. This new pattern is repacked for transit to the central synaptic region.
At the central synaptic region, essentially the same process takes place except here an additional operation takes place which determines its role in the processing system. The incoming information is disassembled into its subunits, mapped into the miniature potentials already there; these are collected together in a meaningful pattern, ‘operated’ on, then repacked for transit to the effector site, where again the same kind of processing sequence takes place. In all three regions, despite the difference in their roles, there are similar processing features:
  1. In each region, three forms of the nerve impulse are involved: miniature graded potentials, graded potentials, action potentials.
  2. In each region, each component of the process is carried out by a precise mathematical operation: four each in the receptor and effector regions; five in the central synaptic region.
It is suggested that integration of function in the nervous system consists of converting information into energy which is in turn converted into a number. Processing of information at each region then involves mathematical operations applied to these numbers. Function appears to be stereotyped in all three regions. The receptor region receives highly selective and restrictive information so that the universe we ‘perceive’ would appear to be a subset of a much larger universe.  相似文献

Time-integration of the master equation governing the birth-and-death model of the Volterra-Lotka reaction is carried out for three different initial conditions, with the results:
  1. Fluctuations destroy the deterministic steady state in a manner quantitatively predicted from a cumulant expansion;
  2. The sustained oscillatory behavior predicted by the deterministic model degenerated after 1/4 cycle in the stochastic model;
  3. It is possible to select initial distributions such that the asymptotic distribution is a spike at the origin of the plane of reactants.

  1. Phage-like particles Nb1 isolated from cells of Nitrobacter agilis were characterized after freeze etching and after treatment by fixation agents.
  2. Ethanol-acetic acid fixed particles can be digested by the proteolytic enzyme papain.
  3. Ethanol-acetic acid fixed particles show a loss in mass and volume after treatment with DNase. Under the same conditions RNase has no influence.

  1. From 40 waters of the Abisko-district (Sweden, Lapland) 58 samples were collected (essentially samples from sediments).
  2. It is not possible to clear the origin of all discovered tests of sediments. The bottom of most waters was covered with mosses, from which vegetation, tests can come into the sediments. But also tests from other biotopes, can be found at the bottom.
  3. Nevertheless we can recognize typical characters of those species living in sediments. The prevalent type is the “Difflugia-type”. Those species of Centropyxis which immigrated into sediments demonstrate a trend towards the “Difflugia-type”. The immigration is possible from Aufwuchs, mosses and soils. 62,7% of the recorded tests belong to Difflugia, 17,8% to Centropyxis.
  4. The prevalent species in the sediments of the Abisko-district is Difflugia elegans var. teres, the next is D. glubolosa.
  5. A great number of investigated waters contained the oligotrophic species Centropyxis aërophila. Only one lake (Ruontenjaure) shows the association of dystrophic lakes.
  6. Some species are described taxonomically, for instance: Centropyxis nauwercki n.sp. C. nauwercki is very much like Difflugia, but is also connected with C. platystoma. The new species shows a trend from Centropyxis to Difflugia.
  7. C. aërophila can also immigrate into the Aufwuchs. There the species has membraneous tests.
  8. Geographical aspects of the sediment colonization are discussed.

  1. Polyhedral particles were isolated from cells of Nitrobacter winogradskyi and of Nitrobacter strains K1, K4 and α1. Their physical and biological properties are characterized.
  2. The investigated strains contain polyhedral particles, 1000–1200 Å in size. With increasing age of the culture more particles are found in cells of Nitrobacter. Simultaneously the number of colony producing nitritoxidants decreases.
  3. In strain α1 the loss of the capability to form colonies is connected with partial lysis of the cell and release of particles.
  4. A homogeneous fraction of particles was obtained by zone density gradient centrifugation in Tris-Mg-SH-buffer.
  5. The polyhedral particles have a sedimentation coefficient of s w,20 0 =825S and a CsCl-buoyant density of ?25 g/cm3.
  6. Based on the determined properties the particles are classified as phage-like Nitrobacter particles Nb1.

  1. A method for the direct recording of the PEP efflux from isolated mitochondria is described.
  2. This method has been used to show the stimulation of PEP efflux by externally added Mn++ ions.
  3. Valinomycin, uncoupler and oleate were also shown to stimulate PEP efflux.
  4. Valinomycin caused an increase in the internal concentration of both PEP and citrate.
  5. The results indicate that the major pathway of PEP synthesis in isolated mitochondria is via PEP carboxykinase and the results do not call for an unknown pathway of metabolism.
  6. Two interactions between PEP and citrate are described; competition for the mitochondrial interior and the stimulation of PEP production by citrate.

Synthetic sulfuric acid is used in a wide range of applications in fine chemical industry. Despite an already performed optimization of input amounts, used sulfuric acid is still a quantitatively important waste by-product. As a result, different utilization technologies for used sulfuric acid exist:
  1. production of gypsum
  2. thermal reductive cracking
  3. thermal cracking and oxidation
This makes an LCA study of this waste by-product quite interesting. In this paper:
  • ? the starting point for a comparative LCA of the above mentioned utilization technologies at a concrete situation is explained, in a work of Ciba-Geigy Corp.
  • ? a short summary of the comparative LCA is presented
  • ? lessons learned from performing the LCA and using it in a decision process are described.

    Objective

    The goal of this study is the evaluation of the functionnal results and the complications of this type of surgery. Such questions have been poorly discussed in the literature.

    Methods

    We report our experience on 80 inflatable prostheses that were implanted between october 1987 and october 1994. The mean follow-up is 3 years and the assessment of the objective (mechanical functioning of the prosthesis and complications) and sujective results (sexuality of the patients) is carried out on 68 patients.

    Results

    The results are the following:
  • ? 54.5% of functioning disturbances,
  • ? 7% of infections,
  • ? 27.5% of prosthesis removals.

    1. The phytoplankton cycle off Lawson's Bay, Waltair follows a bimodal pattern with a major peak during March–May; a minor peak during October–November months and with a low production during the summer months i.e., June–August.
    2. During the summer months of 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1962 dumping of dredged spoil from the entrance channel of the harbour into the sea resulted in a natural enrichment of waters.
    3. Following this enrichment, there was a qualitative and quantitative increase in the phytoplankters thus leading to the development of a bloom.
    4. Only Thalassiosira subtilis and Chaetoceros curvisetus commonly bloomed during the four years.
    5. The increase in gross production which varied from 3–13 fold and the high photosynthesis-respiration ratios 5.1 to 10.5 indicated that the bloom populations were in a healthy state.
    6. The decrease of the populations to the initial levels suggests that some unknown factor, other than those investigated must have been operating.
    7. Consequences of eutrophication of different origins on stimulation of phytoplankton production are briefly discussed.

    1. GABA, ACh, and other agents were applied by pressure ejection to the neuropil of the third abdominal ganglion in the isolated nerve cord of Manduca sexta. Intersegmental muscle motor neurons with dendritic arborizations in the same hemiganglion were inhibited by GABA (Fig. 2) and excited by ACh (Fig. 5).
    2. Picrotoxin was a potent antagonist of GABA (Fig. 4A). Bicuculline reduced GABA responses in some motor neurons (Fig. 4C), but had no effect on many other motor neurons. Curare reduced ACh responses (Fig. 6A). Bicuculline was an effective ACh antagonist in most motor neurons tested (Fig. 6B).
    3. Motor neurons with dendrites across the ganglion from the ejection pipette exhibited different responses to GABA and ACh. Contralateral motor neurons often showed smaller, delayed hyperpolarizing GABA responses (Fig. 7). On two occasions, contralateral motor neurons had excitatory responses (Fig. 8). Contralateral motor neurons were hyperpolarized by ACh (Fig. 9). The inhibitory responses had only slightly longer latencies than ipsilateral excitatory ACh responses (Fig. 10A). The contralateral inhibitory ACh responses, but not the ipsilateral excitatory ACh responses, were eliminated by TTX (Fig. 10B).
    4. A model, which includes inhibitory interneurons that cross the ganglionic midline to inhibit their contralateral homologs and motor neurons (Fig. 11), is proposed to account for contralateral responses to GABA and ACh and antagonistic patterns of activity of motor neurons during mechanosensory reflex responses.

    1. Auditory responses in the zebra finch (Taenopygia guttata) song-system nucleus HVc were assessed at 54 recording sites by 3 different methods: discriminated action potentials; excitatory summed responses; and excitatory minus inhibitory summed responses. Four standard stimuli were presented at each site: the bird's own song; this song reversed; a conspecific song; and a noise burst. Responses were quantified by calculating a relative response index that partitioned the response, to provide a response profile, across the stimuli.
    2. Regardless of analysis method, the strongest response was most often to the bird's own song (78–82%, depending on method). The predominant rank order of response strength across the remaining three stimuli was conspecific song > reversed song > noise.
    3. The distribution of relative response magnitude was sensitive to analysis method. Discriminated spikes captured the heterogeneity of HVc neurons, whereas the excitatory summed responses reflected the overall trends more consistently. When inhibition was subtracted from excitation in the summed responses, the variance of the relative responses increased, but this method presented some problems for statistical analysis.
    4. A small sample of neurons in other forebrain auditory areas was used for comparative analyses. At these recording sites, the bird's own song did not consistently elicit the best response and there were generally smaller differences in the relative responses to the four stimuli. The smaller degree of stimulus selectivity among these cells resulted in less sensitivity to differences in the assessment methods.

    1. An ecological study of the Ponggol Estuary was conducted from July 1965 to June 1966 and the seasonal data on physical, chemical and biological characteristics were presented.
    2. The Ponggol River represents a short, narrow and shallow estuary in Singapore. The river mouth is open throughout the year and water from eastern Johore Straits drains in twice a day at high tide. The upper reach, however, is left exposed at low tide.
    3. The Ponggol River was classified as a vertically and laterally homogeneous estuary and was found to exhibit a mesohaline to polyhaline environment.
    4. Significant hydrological gradients from the river mouth 10 the upper reach were noted in the river system. Salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH increased towards the mouth of the river and other parameters such as nutrients, dissolved organic matter and turbidity increased towards the source.
    5. Although the river received organic pollutants at the upper reach the estuary was able to discharge them fairly rapidly through regular flushing by the tides. The transient rise of organic matter did not appear to impart any serious affect on the biota in the estuary.
    6. Over 98% of the phytoplankton consisted of diatoms, most of which were brought into the estuary from eastern Johore Straits. Freshwater forms were relatively few.
    7. Phytoplankton biomass was considerably higher than the adjoining waters. and was reduced at the upper reach due to high turbidity of the water.
    8. 80% of the zooplankton was composed of dinoflagellates,Difflugia, copepods and bivalve larvae dominating at all sections of the estuary.
    9. Percentage composition of the zooplankton showed that dinoflagellates and copepod nauplii predominated at high tide whileDifflugia and bivalve larvae were abundant at low tide.
    10. Zooplankton standing crop, in general, was higher towards the source at high tide but the reverse was found at low tide, i.e. standing crop increased towards the river mouth. This was attributed to the process of concentration.
    11. Species composition of zooplankton was found to be more or less similar to that of the eastern Johore Straits.
    12. The nekton consisted predominantly of small and juvenile fish. Close correlation of fish and copepods was found to be statistically valid and it was concluded that the fish entered the estuary to feed rather than to spawn.
    13. The squids formed an important catch of the beach seine unit and were caught throughout the year.
    14. The fish population could be grouped into four categories: estuarine components, euryhaline components, marine components and migratory components.
    15. Benthic invertebrates were abundant. Commercially important species consisted of prawns,Metapenaeus andPenaeus, and crabs,Neptunus pelagicus andScylla serrata.
    16. The river bed was inhabited predominantly by molluscs and the distribution resembled that of the sheltered shore of muddy-sand type.
