Gagea lutea and G. spathacea are spring geophytes naturally co-occurring in woodlands, characterised by contrasting reproductive strategies probably caused by divergent ploidy levels. The hexaploid G. lutea relies on vegetative reproduction by subterranean bulbils in young stages but completely switches to sexual reproduction once a certain bulb size is attained. The nonaploid G. spathacea seems to be sterile and reproduces only vegetatively; the plants continue to form bulbils even in the rare event of flowering. This study used AFLP genotyping to investigate the consequences of these reproductive strategies for genetic diversity. For 150 and 100 samples from three Western Pomeranian populations of G. lutea and G. spathacea, respectively, AFLP fingerprints were analysed for three different spatial scales, the patch, the transect, and the region. Applying a threshold for genotypic identity of <0.05 simple matching distance, 22?C30 genets were detected in the three G. lutea populations, with all genets confined to single populations. Clonal genets consisted of 2?C9 samples and extended over up to 28?m, but never occupied the whole length of a transect; 67?C75% of all patches had different genets. Genetic distances between genets within populations were similar to those recorded between populations. Genotyping of G. spathacea revealed a single clonal genet for all three populations sampled within a distance of 30?km. The absent genetic diversity confirms the suspected sexual sterility. Gagea spathacea seems to be one of the few non-apomictic, fully clonal vascular plants able to occupy a significant range solely by dispersal of vegetative diaspores.  相似文献

Reproductive patterns in ten species of Gagea Salisb. were compared by counts and measurements of bulbs, bulbils and flowers in large cohorts including all life stages. Two types of bulbils were found: taxa with “type I bulbils” start to develop a single to several bulbils as soon as the replacement bulb has reached a certain diameter and then continue to form them indefinitely throughout the life of the plant. “Type II bulbils” are only temporarily produced in immature, non-flowering plants of some species, but not in fully grown, flowering individuals, a phenomenon termed “reproductive switch”. Patterns of bulbil formation are species-specific: G. davlianidzeae, G. nigra, G. peduncularis, G. pratensis, and G. spathacea produce only type I bulbils; G. angelae, G. fedschenkoana and G. lutea develop only type II bulbils. Both bulbil types occur simultaneously in G. fragifera and G. villosa. The quantitative investigations demonstrate the existence of species-specific thresholds for the development of bulbils as well as flowers. Compared to the adult volume of the replacement bulb (where 90% of all plants flower), both types of bulbils have usually low thresholds: 0–5% (type I, all but one species) and 3–13% (type II). Inflorescences develop if plants attain between 38 and 60% of the adult bulb volume. Minor changes in patterns of bulbil formation and thresholds for their development may ensure survival of highly sterile taxa (e.g. G. spathacea, G. fragifera). This, in turn, can facilitate speciation in the genus driven by both hybridization and polyploidization.  相似文献

A large proportion of temperate forest plant diversity is found in the herb layer. However, for many of its species, little is known about their autecology, which makes it difficult to assess potential threats and efficiently safeguard the diversity of understorey herbaceous communities. This also applies to Gagea spathacea (Liliaceae), a globally rare spring geophyte, which mainly occurs in deciduous forests of northern Central Europe. We investigated the causal relationships between population characteristics of G. spathacea and abiotic site conditions across different forest communities in the center of its distributional range. Leaf length (a surrogate of the species' vegetative propagation) was positively related to soil moisture and soil nitrogen. Consequently, mean leaf length was highest in moist forest communities of the alliance Alno-Ulmion. Moreover, mean variability in leaf length was lowest in those forests, indicating a higher and more stable vegetative propagation via bulbils. We found no support for a significant relationship between leaf length and leaf density or between leaf length and flower formation. Population density varied strongly among forest sites, but was not related to soil moisture and hardly influenced by soil nitrogen. Our results suggest that soil water and nutrient supply play a vital role in determining the species' vegetative propagation, whereas the duration of habitat continuity is most likely an important determinant of population size and density. Conservation strategies therefore require a better understanding of the complex interrelationships between abiotic site conditions and the historical context-dependency of habitats.  相似文献

Because monocarpic perennial plants have only one reproductive opportunity in their entire life, they need to ensure offspring production. Some plants reproduce both sexually and vegetatively, and vegetative reproduction could possibly compensate for seed production. Therefore, the role and significance of these reproductive modes is likely to differ between monocarps and polycarps, which can reproduce many times. Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii is a monocarpic perennial that reproduces both sexually and vegetatively (bulblet formation). Here, we investigated the characteristics and contribution to population maintenance of sexual and vegetative reproduction to reveal the significance of these two reproductive modes in this species. First, we found that bulblet formation occurred in plants after the three‐leaved rosette stage. Second, resource allocation experiments revealed that although resources were mainly invested in fruit maturation after the flowering season, resource allocation was switched from sexual reproduction to vegetative reproduction if seed production was insufficient. Third, the outcrossing rate in this species varied greatly according to the environment surrounding the population. However, reproductive assurance by selfing kept seed production stable even if flowers did not receive sufficient pollen for full seed set via outcross pollination, and moreover, there was no intensive inbreeding depression. Finally, genotypic identification of ramets suggested that daughter ramets derived from vegetative reproduction received the space that the mother flowering ramet had occupied until the previous year.  相似文献

Saxifraga granulata is able to reproduce both sexually and vegetatively. In an earlier report from Denmark, seed set was said to be low, the species reproducing mainly vegetatively by means of bulbils. Furthermore, investigations in northern England have shown inbreeding depression in gynodioecious 5. granulata populations. The present study, however, demonstrates that 5. granulata is fully self-compatible in Denmark; seed set per flower in hand-selfings was on average 70%, compared to ca. 80% in control plants. Nevertheless, despite high seed set, reproduction by bulbils is probably the most important mode of reproduction. Saxifraga granulata has typically opportunistic flowers which are white, UV-neutral compared to the background reflexion, and offering only a small standing crop of nectar. Optical attraction by the massive flowering over a relatively short period is regarded as a way of overcoming competition from co-occurring, simultaneously flowering species. Saxifraga granulata flowers received visits from at least 27 different insects species. Based on number of recorded flower visits, records on foraging time, and investigations of body surface pollen loads, Rhamphomyia sulcata (Empididae), Cheilosia spp. (Syrphidae), Polyblepharis opaca (Empididae), and Halictus spp. ( s. I .) (Halictidae) were found to be the most important pollen vectors in the 5. granulata population.  相似文献

Spring ephemeral herbs inhabiting deciduous forests commonly complete reproduction and vegetative growth before canopy closure in early summer. Effects of shading by early canopy closure on reproductive output and vegetative growth, however, may vary depending on the seasonal allocation patterns of photosynthetic products between current reproduction and storage for future growth in each species. To clarify the effects of sink–source balance on seed production and bulb growth in a spring ephemeral herb, Gagea lutea, we performed a bract removal treatment (source reduction) and a floral-bud removal treatment (sink reduction) under canopy and open conditions. Leaf carbon fixations did not differ between the forest and open sites and among treatments. Bract carbon fixations were also similar between sites but tended to decrease when floral buds were removed. Seed production was higher under open condition but decreased by the bract-removal treatment under both light conditions. In contrast, bulb growth was independent of light conditions and the bract-removal treatment but increased greatly by the bud-removal treatment. Therefore, leaves and bracts acted as specialized source organs for vegetative and reproductive functions, respectively, but photosynthetic products by bracts were flexibly used for bulb growth when plants failed to set fruits. Extension of bright period was advantageous for seed production (i.e., source limited) but not for vegetative growth (i.e., sink limited) in this species.  相似文献

The life cycles, programme of energy expenditure and allocation to reproduction, and the reproductive efforts of three wildAllium species, i.e.,A. Victorialis ssp.platyphyllum, A. monanthum, andA. Grayi, all native to Japan, were studied and compared. Furthermore, their adaptive strategies were discussed from the point of view of life history strategy. First, the reproductive systems, number of male and female gametes borne, and the number and size of propagules produced were critically investigated. In order to estimate the crude reproductive efficiency (sensu Harper and Ogden, 1970) of these species, sequential harvests were taken and the plants were divided into their component structures, dried and weighed. The quantity of dry weight allocated to sexual or vegetative reproduction was obtained by weighing the seeds, bulbils, or bulblets produced at the end of the season. A. Victorialis ssp.platyphyllum showed a rather low reproductive effort. However, the mean seed output per plant was 34.8±16.8 and the productivity appeared very constant every season. Thus, in the natural populations young plants are borne and recruited every season by means of sexual reproduction. A. monanthum was found to be characterized by annual type dry matter economy. The sexuality and reproductive systems of this species turned out to be extremely complex, and ten different reproductive types were distinguished. The exceedingly low efficiency of sexual reproduction in this species is apparently supplemented by vegetative propagation. The dry matter allocation to daughter bulbs at final harvest was very high; whereas the allocation to sexual reproduction was extremely low. InA. Grayi (a polyploid complex of 4X, 5X, and 6X), a surprisingly high amount of the total annual net assimilate is allocated to the bulbils and bulblets. On the other hand, sexual reproductive effort in this species is exceedingly low, even in obligate amphimictic plants. Thus, the recruitment of individuals in a population of this species appears to be largely dependent on vegetative reproduction. Considering the number of bulbils produced in the scape heads, their dispersibility, germinability, and rapid growth after sprouting, the bulbils evidently possess a function almost comparable to seeds. This species no doubt possesses an adapative strategy to unstable, open habitats exposed to frequent disturbances. It is concluded that the life history strategies of plants, as characterized here in this paper for three wildAllium species, have doubtlessly differentiated by adapting to the respective ecological backgrounds of their habitats.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction of spring ephemerals inhabiting deciduous forests progress simultaneously during a short period from snowmelt to canopy closure. To clarify the mechanism to mitigate the cost of reproduction, contributions of foliar and non-foliar photosynthetic products to seed production were examined in a spring ephemeral Gagea lutea. Leaf growth, foliar and non-foliar photosynthetic activities, and total assimilated products were compared among reproductive-intact, floral bud-removal, and vegetative plants. Translocation of current photosynthetic products to individual organs was quantified by 13CO2-trace experiment. Bulb growth was compared between hand-pollination and floral bud-removal treatments. Finally, seed set was compared between intact, leaf-clipping, and bract-clipping treatments. Fruit-forming plants retained leaves longer than vegetative and floral bud-removal plants, but the assimilative contribution of extended leaf longevity was negligible. Carbon supply by bract photosynthesis was large enough for fruit development, while carbon supply by fruit photosynthesis was offset by the high respiration loss. Foliar photosynthetic products were largely transported to bulbs, while translocation to reproductive functions was negligible. Because the floral bud-removal increased the bulb growth, lack of reproduction could lead to more storage. The leaf-clipping had no effect on seed production, while the bract-clipping significantly reduced the seed production. Therefore, current photosynthesis of leafy bracts might be a major carbon source for fruit development. This self-compensative mechanism of reproductive structure enables the continuous reproductive activity in this species.  相似文献

Bulbils are small aerial rosettes that occur on the flowering stalks of semelparous Agave plants and in related families, and that are capable of acting as clones of the parent plant. We hypothesized that bulbil formation was inversely related to fruiting success in the flowering stalk, and we explored this hypothesis in A. macroacantha, a species from South-Central Mexico. Forty randomly chosen plants were divided amongst three treatments: (a) elimination of all floral buds, (b) exclusion of pollinators, and (c) control. We also studied 22 plants in which the flowering stalk had been felled by goat grazing. Between September and November 1991 we kept a record of the numbers of bulbils and capsules produced in each flowering stalk. Significant (P<0.0001) differences between treatments were found in the proportion of plants hearing capsules and bearing bulbils. The control treatment had the highest proportion of plants producing capsules, treatment a had the highest proportion of individuals bearing bulbils, while treatment b showed an intermediate response. In the goat-grazed group, 45% of the plants failed to produce any propagative structure after the stalk was cut, and half of all plants produced bulbils on the remaining stump. A significant inverse relationship between the numbers of capsules and the numbers of bulbils per plant was found for the three randomly assigned treatments. Our results suggest that once the production of the flowering stalk has been triggered and the death of the rosette is irreversible, bulbils may act as an insurance mechanism that increases the probability of successful reproduction of the genet.  相似文献

Morphological characters, habitat preference, and currently known distribution of the species Gagea szovitsii (A.F. Láng) Besser, a new indigenous vascular plant species of Central Europe, are presented. The plant was found in alkali grasslands of the south-eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain (SE Hungary). Currently, this can be regarded to the westernmost occurrence of this pontic species. Both G. szovitsii and its closest relative G. bohemica are briefly characterized here with respect to their identification, ecology and distribution. Original illustrations on G. szovitsii are presented. The paper firstly emphasizes the difference of reproductive strategy between G. szovitsii and G. bohemica; the former reproduce itself primarily sexually via seeds, while the latter reproduce itself in asexual way principally by bulbils. Taking the paleo-environmental history of its habitat into consideration, the species can be regarded as an ancient, indigenous Pontic-Pannonian steppe element of Hungary.

Sexual systems play a key role in the ecology and evolution of plant populations. Research on Garcinia L. has shown the occurrence of variations in the sexual systems of this genus, with some authors considering it as dioecious, and for some species as gynodioecious or androdioecious. The population of G. brasiliensis in the restinga of Maricá is dioecious with two individuals characterized as monoecious. Anatomical analysis showed that one has pistillate and sterile staminate flowers, being an unusual female and the other has staminate and perfect flowers (functional pollen grains and ovules), being andromonoecious. In addition, field observations, controlled hand-pollinations, reproductive phenology and anatomical analysis showed no evidence of apomixis in this Neotropical species, different from that provided in the literature for paleotropical species. However, asexual reproduction occurs through ramets suggesting that in this environment of restinga the seedlings are subjected to considerable limitations, and vegetative propagation becomes an important alternative for the occupation of the environment. Flowering episodes occurred throughout the study period, featuring a subannual and long-lasting flowering pattern mainly due to multiple blooms of male plants. The floral characters observed in G. brasiliensis are often associated with a generalist pollination system. Apis mellifera and Trigona spinipes are the effective pollinators of G. brasiliensis flowers. Our findings provide new insights into the reproductive biology of Garcinia.  相似文献

Strategies to globally protect biological diversity are often hampered by an insufficient ecological knowledge about target species. This also applies to Gagea spathacea (Liliaceae), a ‘vulnerable’ woodland spring geophyte with a distribution largely restricted to the lowlands of Central Europe. We studied whether the species’ linkage to highly fertile forest soils is related to its high nitrogen (N) demands during its short developmental cycle. We hypothesized that the species exhibits a highly efficient N (re)cycling strategy, characterized by efficient resorption of N from the leaves and reallocation to bulbs at the end of the growing season. To test this assumption, we conducted a 15N tracer experiment and quantified 15N flows between soil, leaves, bulbs, and roots. Our findings support our hypothesis that G. spathacea is exceptionally efficient in recycling N, shown by the resorption of 68% of leaf N and its reallocation to bulbs at the end of the growing season. After 6 weeks of growth the plant showed a distinct shift in its N metabolism: The C:N ratio of leaves strongly increased and those of bulbs decreased, leaf 15N enrichment and recovery started to decrease, while total plant 15N recovery remained constant, indicating no further N uptake from the soil. Leaf N reallocation to bulbs was accompanied by a twofold increase of the bulbs’ biomass. Because of the stenoecious behaviour of G. spathacea, a careful protection and sustainable management of G. spathacea forest habitats is necessary, particularly in its Central European core area.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of an experiment with the cultivation ofButomus umbellatus at a stable water level of 0.8 m for 6 years. The plant growth, flowering and vegetative reproduction were measured and recorded at the end of each growing season. The species showed a great ability to reproduce vegetatively by rhizome fragments. Cultured plants ofButomus umbellatus did not show any decrease or limitation of growth or flowering caused by stable water level. The expansion of the rhizome system seems to be dependent on its spontaneous fragmentation.  相似文献

Outcrossing and sexual reproduction of most flowering plants depends on pollinators. Plant traits likely to be involved in pollinator attraction include flower color, shape, and size. Furthermore, plant or flower density and the temporal flowering pattern may have an effect on reproduction. In this study, we examine the pollination ecology, breeding system, female reproductive output, and germination of two tropical understory species, Stenostephanus lobeliiformis (Acanthaceae) and Besleria melancholica (Gesneriaceae), which differ in these traits. Pollinator observations revealed that the dense flowering S. lobeliiformis with pinkish flowers received a higher diversity of pollinators, but visitor frequency measured as visits per flower per hour was much less (0.1 h?1) than that to B. melancholica, which has a smaller floral display of dull-colored flowers (1.5 h?1). Pollination experiments revealed that S. lobeliiformis but not B. melancholica is pollen-limited. In addition, both species are partially self-incompatible and depend on pollinators for outcrossing. Natural fruit set of open-pollinated unmanipulated flowers (control treatment) in both species is 22–26 %. Germination studies indicated inbreeding depression in S. lobeliiformis. We conclude that the pollination ecology of these species is influenced by a broad set of traits and that very different combinations of these traits can be successful in terms of reproduction.  相似文献

Summary Interactions between vegetative growth and reproduction were evaluated in Peumus boldus, Lithraea caustica and Laretia acaulis, three woody dioecious species in central Chile. Phenological observations were made periodically on marked branches of male and female plants, and biomass allocation (dry weight) to vegetative and reproductive tissues was measured. The magnitude of flowering was evaluated in groups of plants in three successive seasons. The patterns of activities are species- and sex-dependent, and cycles of 2–4 years have been established. Branches that produce flowers either do not grow or grow less than branches without flowers, and males and females have differential resource allocation: male branches attain higher biomass values. Groups of plants show seasonal behavior that suggest synchrony in their reproductive activities.  相似文献

It has been proposed that plant species cytotypes commonly exhibit altered morphology, reproduction, geographic and ecological distributions. We studied phenotypic variation in height, sexual (flowers, seeds) and asexual (aerial bulbils) reproduction in natural populations and in the conditions of a common garden of three cytotypes (2n = 4x, 5x, 6x) of the bulbous geophyte Allium oleraceum in the Czech Republic. Additionally, we compared the germination and dormancy of seeds and bulbils to determine whether propagules have different ecological roles. The pattern of morphological differentiation observed between cytotypes under natural conditions was similar to that observed under common garden conditions, suggesting that variability in morphological characteristics appears to be associated with ploidy levels. We revealed differences in size and sexual and asexual production between A. oleraceum cytotypes, but with wide overlap among cytotypes, suggesting a limited possibility of the studied traits to reliably distinguish between cytotypes. Tetraploids and pentaploids were rather similar; they were taller and produced more flowers than hexaploids, which were mostly flowerless (mean <0.7 flower/plant). All cytotypes were able to produce viable seeds, but their numbers were extremely low, usually less than 3 seeds per inflorescence; clonal reproduction via aerial bulbils dominates in all cytotypes (flower:bulbil ratio <0.5), with tetraploids producing more but lighter bulbils than other cytotypes. The seed: ovule ratio was low (<0.1) in all cytotypes, although hexaploids reached higher values than other cytotypes. Bulbils germinated better (means >80%) than seeds in all cytotypes, with pentaploid bulbils showing the highest germination (mean 90.5%). The cytotypes did not differ in seed germination (range of means 73.4%–76.3%). About 6% of seeds did not germinate but were still viable at the end of the experiment, while all non-germinated bulbils of all cytotypes had rotten away. Seeds, but not bulbils, can likely form a short-term persistent propagule soil bank. We found no evidence of a phenotypic trade-off between the production of flowers (seeds) and the production of bulbils within the inflorescence of all studied cytotypes. Together, inter-cytotypic differences in fitness-related traits cannot completely explain the different geographic and ecological distributions of cytotypes in the Czech Republic found by previous research.  相似文献

Titanotrichum oldhamii produces both flowers and asexual bulbils on its inflorescences. However, field observations and herbarium collections indicate that seed set is infrequent and that most reproduction is from vegetative bulbils. We have investigated the failure of sexual reproduction and identified four major causes: (1) in the wild, the seed:ovule ratio for open pollination was only 1.9%, in contrast to 10.1% for artificial cross-pollination, implying poor pollinator services. (2) The overall reproductive success was 5–10 times greater in glasshouse pollination treatments compared to field treatments. This suggests suboptimal environmental conditions for seed set in natural habitats, which may eliminate natural seed set completely. (3) Pollination experiments showed that outcrossed populations set significantly more seed and had higher germination rates than intra-populational and self crosses, in both field and glasshouse experiments. T. oldhamii thus appears to benefit from wide outcrossing. Pollen transfer between populations, however, seems to be infrequent because of the rarity and scattered distribution of Titanotrichum populations. (4) Flowers near the apex of the inflorescence are less likely to set seed, especially late in the season when inflorescences convert to bulbil production. In these late flowers, pollen tubes showed poor guidance as they approach the micropyle of the ovules. Even under optimal glasshouse conditions, the average outcrossing success was only 0.229. Almost one-half of the ovules remained undeveloped and 13.5% of ovules aborted after pollination, indicating a strong shift of resource allocation toward vegetative bulbils and rhizome development. Efficient reproduction from asexual bulbils may thus have released Titanotrichum from strong selection for efficient sexual reproduction. However, occasional seed set observed in the wild may be very important for maintaining some genetic diversity in populations, and promoting overall fitness.  相似文献

In dioecious clonal plants, the reproductive effort required to set seeds will be responsible for the larger investment in sexual reproduction by females. If there will be a trade-off in resource allocation between sexual and clonal reproduction, this differential sexual reproduction will lead to sexual differentiation in the relative amount of clonal reproduction. To test this prediction, we studied differences between the sexes in their phenologies and investments in sexual and vegetative reproduction (clonal reproduction by means of bulbils) with respect to ramet size in a dioecious clonal plant, Dioscorea japonica Thunb. The period of bulbil production overlapped the period during which infructescences developed. Females flowered later, produced heavier inflorescences, and fewer flowers per inflorescence than did males. Regression analysis using the size of the individual plants demonstrated that large females made smaller investments in inflorescences and larger investments in sexual reproduction than did large males. In contrast, females invested fewer resources in vegetative reproduction than did males. However, the total investments in sexual and vegetative reproduction did not differ between the sexes. These results supported our hypothesis on the sexual differentiation in sexual and clonal reproduction.  相似文献
