Both the Mississippi and Missouri rivers experienced major flooding in the spring and summer of 1993, inundating much of their floodplains for long periods, and allowing fish access to vast but previously inaccessible benthic foraging areas. In response to the latter, we hypothesized that flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) would exhibit altered post-flooding growth as compared to like-aged fish whose lives were flood-free. To test this hypothesis, we obtained the left pectoral fin spines from hoop-netted Mississippi River flathead catfish collected in the vicinity of Crystal City, Missouri, USA, and conducted an individual-based back-calculated growth comparison of individuals captured pre-flood (1991) and post-flood (1996). For like-aged cohorts, our back-calculated length-at-age data clearly show that the post-flooding growth in 1996-collected fish was superior to that of the 1991-collected fish that had experienced less exceptional flow regimes. This outcome suggests that increased forage or/and foraging opportunities can be a consequence of flooding, and that flathead catfish are able to capitalize on this. The natural flooding regime of big rivers may thus be an important contributor to the growth and success of certain fish species; consequently, modifying the river’s natural hydrograph and channel morphology may be detrimental. Six cases of severed intestines in farm-raised channel catfish were examined at fish disease diagnostic laboratories in Mississippi and Alabama. This condition has not been reported previously in fish. Affected fish had a 4-7-cm-long intestinal section (hyperemic where it was severed) attached to the stomach. The remainder of the intestine was completely missing in all six cases except for a 1-1.5-cm section of intestine prolapsed from the anus in fish from three of the cases. Ischemia, autodigestion following intussusception, or intestinal epithelium degradation are suggested as possible etiologies for this condition.  相似文献

Nineteen channel catfish isolates of Saprolegnia sp. obtained from 5 separate fish farms in Mississippi, which became affected by winter kill syndrome during 1991 and 1996, were investigated with respect to physiological characteristics and genetic variation. Isolates of S. parasitica from crayfish and S. diclina were included for comparison. Most strains of catfish isolates grew well at 20 and 30 degrees C. Repeated zoospore emergence was found in catfish isolates of Saprolegnia sp. and S. parasitica, but not in S. diclina. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) was applied for a further characterisation of the isolates. The RAPD analysis among Saprolegnia spp. isolates was constructed from 686 amplified products in 67 separable positions and indicated that the catfish isolates of Saprolegnia sp. are composed of 3 genetically distinct groups.  相似文献

Calcein marking and cohabitation challenges have not been investigated in fish parasite research. This study evaluated a cohabitation challenge method in immunization trials against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich) using calcein, a fluorescent dye, to mark channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque). Fish were marked by calcein immersion at 0, 500, and 1500 mg l(-1), and then challenged with 15 000 theronts fish(-1). No difference was noted in fish infection levels, mortality, and mean days to death (MDD) caused by Ich between unmarked and marked fish or between fish marked with high (1500 mg l(-1)) and low (500 mg l(-1)) concentrations of calcein. After ensuring that calcein marking had no effect on the susceptibility of fish to Ich theronts, 2 immunization trials were conducted to evaluate the cohabitation challenge model using calcein-marked catfish. Fish mortality, relative percent survival (RPS), and MDD were compared between cohabitation-challenged fish and fish challenged by non-cohabitation. No significant difference was observed in RPS for cohabitation-challenged fish and fish challenged by non-cohabitation. A cohabitation challenge can be used as an alternative challenge method in parasite studies, since it closely mimics natural exposure.  相似文献

1. In situ exclosure experiments in the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers determined the importance of fish predation in regulating zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha), an increasingly important constituent of the benthic invertebrate assemblages in both rivers. 2. We evaluated the effects of predatory fish on the density, biomass and size distribution of zebra mussels in a floodplain reach of the upper Mississippi River and in a naturally constrained reach of the Ohio River. Fifty, six-sided, predator-exclusion cages and fifty ‘partial’ cages (mesh at the upstream end only) were deployed, with half the cages containing willow snags and half clay tiles suspended 12–16 cm above the bottom. A single snag or tile sample unit was removed from each cage at approximately monthly intervals from July to October 1994. Types and relative abundances of molluscivorous fish were evaluated by electrofishing near the cages in both rivers. Actual and potential recruitment of young zebra mussels on to the substrata were measured using benthic samples in both rivers and estimated (Ohio River only) from counts of planktonic veligers. 3. Zebra mussels were consumed by at least three fish species in the upper Mississippi River (mostly carp, Cyprinus carpio, and redhorse suckers, Moxostoma sp.) and five species in the Ohio River (primarily smallmouth buffalo, Ictiobus bubalus, and channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus), but potential recruitment seemed adequate to replace consumed mussels, at least in the Ohio River. The number of juvenile benthic mussels showed no apparent link with the density of veligers soon after initiation of reproduction. Recruitment of juveniles on snags and tiles was not affected by cage type (thus eliminating a potentially confounding ‘cage effect’). 4. Fish significantly influenced mussel populations, but the impact was often greatest among low density populations in the upper Mississippi. Density and biomass differed in both rivers for cage type (higher inside cages), substratum (greater on tiles), and date (increased over time). Presumed size-selective predation was present in the Mississippi (greater on larger size classes) but was not evident in the Ohio. We hypothesize that fish in the Mississippi can more easily select larger prey from the low density populations; whereas size-selective predation on tightly packed zebra mussels in the Ohio would be difficult. 5. Although fish can reduce numbers of Dreissena polymorpha in the two rivers, current levels of fish predation seem insufficient to regulate zebra mussel densities because of its great reproductive capacity. The recent invasion of zebra mussels, however, could lead to larger fish populations while promoting greater carbon retention and overall ecosystem secondary production.  相似文献

The effect of pollutants on the intensity of infection of metazoan parasites in the Mayan catfish, Ariopsis assimilis was investigated. Data were collected on pollutants and metazoan parasites from 76 catfish from five localities in Chetumal Bay in October, 1996. Nineteen pollutants (pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) were found in the catfish livers. Heavy metal content was not determined. Nineteen metazoan parasite species were recovered. After controlling for fish length and sampling station, there was a significant negative linear relationship between the intensity of the larval digenean Mesostephanus appendiculatoides and 1,1,1,-trichloro-2,2-bis (4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) concentrations. This negative relationship may be explained either by the effect of the pesticide on the mortality of (i) free-living larval forms, (ii) metacercariae in the fish, (iii) infected fish or (iv) intermediate host snails. There were significant differences between fish parasitized and not parasitized with M. appendiculatoides with respect to their DDT concentrations. There were also significant differences between the variances of the mean Clark's coefficient of condition values between catfish parasitized and not parasitized by M. appendiculatoides, with the variance of non-parasitized catfish being significantly larger. The results provided statistical evidence that DDT has a detrimental effect on M. appendiculatoides infection intensity. Furthermore, the significantly larger variance value of Clark's coefficient for non-parasitized fish suggested that DDT affects both the parasite and general host condition.  相似文献

Musty "off-flavor" in pond-cultured channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) costs the catfish production industry in the United States at least 30 million US dollars annually. The cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata (Skuja) is credited with being the major cause of musty off-flavor in farm-raised catfish in Mississippi. The herbicides diuron and copper sulfate, currently used by catfish producers as algicides to help mitigate musty off-flavor problems, have several drawbacks, including broad-spectrum toxicity towards the entire phytoplankton community that can lead to water quality deterioration and subsequent fish death. By use of microtiter plate bioassays, a novel group of compounds derived from the natural compound 9,10-anthraquinone have been found to be much more selectively toxic towards O. perornata than diuron and copper sulfate. In efficacy studies using limnocorrals placed in catfish production ponds, application rates of 0.3 micro M (125 micro g/liter) of the most promising anthraquinone derivative, 2-[methylamino-N-(1'-methylethyl)]-9,10-anthraquinone monophosphate (anthraquinone-59), dramatically reduced the abundance of O. perornata and levels of 2-methylisoborneol, the musty compound produced by O. perornata. The abundance of green algae and diatoms increased dramatically 2 days after application of a 0.3 micro M concentration of anthraquinone-59 to pond water within the limnocorrals. The half-life of anthraquinone-59 in pond water was determined to be 19 h, making it much less persistent than diuron. Anthraquinone-59 appears to be promising for use as a selective algicide in catfish aquaculture.  相似文献

A case of gastrointestinal torsion with dilatation in a farm-raised channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) was examined at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center (Stoneville, Mississippi, USA). The affected fish was a gravid female broodfish, which displayed pale gills and a markedly distended abdomen. Internal examination revealed that the gastrointestinal tract and ovaries were rotated around each other four times in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in right lateral recumbency. The catfish had a markedly distended gastrointestinal tract, pale liver, hypoplastic spleen, hypoplastic swim bladder, and high volume of ascitic fluid. Blood analysis indicated multiple abnormalities, including severe anemia and metabolic acidosis. The etiology of the torsion was uncertain; however, the presence of a hypoplastic swim bladder most likely allowed for increased movement of the gastrointestinal tract and ovaries. When examining cases of abdominal distention in fish, gastrointestinal torsion can be considered among the differential diagnoses.  相似文献

Passive immunization of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque) was conducted to determine if anti-Flavobacterium columnare serum was protective when injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) into channel catfish. The anti-F. columnare serum was produced by actively immunizing (i.p. injection) channel catfish with sonicated whole cells or purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of F. columnare in Freund's adjuvant. Serum anti-F. columnare activity was verified by Western blotting and ELISA of serum. Normal serum and sterile culture broth were used as controls. Complement was inactivated in all sera by heating. After 48 h, passively immunized fish were challenged with virulent F. columnare by i.p. injection. A group of unchallenged fish served as controls. The immune response of catfish to the antigenic fractions was different when examined by Western blotting. Antibody produced with whole-cell antigen responded to a broad range of molecular weight components, while LPS antigens were restricted to a pair of bands near 20 kDa. Control fish injected with culture medium experienced 100% mortality 14 d post-challenge. Relative percent survival was 77 and 73 for catfish passively immunized with anti-LPS and anti-whole-cell serum, respectively. Results suggest that antibodies in the serum are involved in the protective immune response against columnaris disease in channel catfish.  相似文献

A herpesvirus was isolated during 2 occurrences of mass mortality among adult catfish Ictalurus melas raised in different farms in northern Italy. The agent replicated in the channel catfish ovary (CCO) cell line from channel catfish I. punctatus, inducing a cytopathic effect similar to that caused by Ictalurid herpesvirus 1 (also referred to as channel catfish herpesvirus, CCV). The new herpesvirus, designated I. melas herpesvirus (IcmHV) did not react with polyclonal rabbit or monoclonal antibodies directed to CCV in either neutralization or indirect immunofluorescence assays. The virions of IcmHV possessed a hexagonal nucleocapsid of 107 nm in diameter surrounded by an envelope with a diameter of 227 nm (n = 20) typical for members of the family Herpesviridae. Virions of IcmHV purified from infected CCO cells contained 17 polypeptides ranging in size from 17.5 to 175 kDa and most differed in molecular weight from those found for CCV. The IcmHV was also distinct from CCV when compared by restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of genomic DNA following digestions with the endonucleases Kpn I and Sac I. Lastly, the virulence of IcmHV for channel catfish fry and juveniles, respectively, was demonstrated by experimental infections induced by bath exposure or intraperitoneal injection that resulted in 78 to 96% cumulative mortality in groups of exposed fish. Preventing the introduction of this agent into geographic regions where significant channel catfish production occurs should be a high priority.  相似文献

Blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, are valued in the United States as a trophy fishery for their capacity to reach large sizes, sometimes exceeding 45 kg. Additionally, blue catfish × channel catfish (I. punctatus) hybrid food fish production has recently increased the demand for blue catfish broodstock. However, there has been little study of the genetic impacts and interaction of farmed, introduced and stocked populations of blue catfish. We utilized genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) to capture and genotype SNP markers on 190 individuals from five wild and domesticated populations (Mississippi River, Missouri, D&B, Rio Grande and Texas). Stringent filtering of SNP‐calling parameters resulted in 4275 SNP loci represented across all five populations. Population genetics and structure analyses revealed potential shared ancestry and admixture between populations. We utilized the Sequenom MassARRAY to validate two multiplex panels of SNPs selected from the GBS data. Selection criteria included SNPs shared between populations, SNPs specific to populations, number of reads per individual and number of individuals genotyped by GBS. Putative SNPs were validated in the discovery population and in two additional populations not used in the GBS analysis. A total of 64 SNPs were genotyped successfully in 191 individuals from nine populations. Our results should guide the development of highly informative, flexible genotyping multiplexes for blue catfish from the larger GBS SNP set as well as provide an example of a rapid, low‐cost approach to generate and genotype informative marker loci in aquatic species with minimal previous genetic information.  相似文献

如何减轻大坝阻隔对鱼类等水生生物的影响以及制定有效的恢复措施一直是河流生态保护的主要内容。文章通过文献调研、资料收集等方式对美国密西西比河干流大坝建设状况及其对鱼类的影响进行梳理, 总结了当前美国所采取的相关保护措施和效果。统计结果显示, 密西西比河干流共建有梯级闸坝41座, 均分布在干流的上游, 多数大坝坝高不超过15 m, 库容小于0.3 km3。这些弱调蓄能力的低水头坝阻隔了密西西比河鱼类洄游, 但目前仍未修建过鱼设施。相关研究证实, 密西西比河洄游性鱼类可以利用泄水闸门完成上行和下行, 但过鱼效率随着大坝梯级的递增逐级下降, 尤其是鲟类, 仍难以抑制其种群的衰退。受长期蓄水影响, 密西西比河上游鱼类群落产生了空间分化, 但仍保持着较高的物种多样性。1986和2000年, 美国分别实施了上密西西比河生态系统环境管理计划(UMRS-EMP)和上密西西比河生态恢复和维持策略(UMRS-RMS), 采用渔业资源长期监测计划(LTRMP)及9项栖息地修复措施, 从生态系统层面保障了密西西比河鱼类资源的持续稳定。这种系统性修复方式可为我国筑坝河流鱼类资源保护与河流生态修复提供参考和示范。  相似文献

The European catfish Silurus glanis is an important fish species in both commercial and recreational fisheries. Catfish is a spreading species that was reported to potentially benefit from increasing temperatures. The goal of this study was to estimate long‐term changes in harvest rates of catfish in Central Europe. This study used individual mandatory angling logbooks collected by the Czech Fishing Union in the Czech Republic (Central Europe) over the course of years 1986–2017 (32 years) to assess harvest rates of catfish. This study discovered that harvest of catfish has been increasing over time. Moreover, rivers that previously showed zero harvested catfish are beginning to display higher harvest rates of catfish. Increasing average air temperature and angling effort in the study area have positively affected harvest rates of catfish. The increased harvest of catfish could not be reliably explained by intensive fish stocking. In conclusion, while other studies show that many fish species are negatively affected by human activities and therefore show decreased harvest rates, catfish angling seems to benefit from anthropogenic changes.  相似文献

Triloidy was induced in European catfish, Silurus glanis L., by cold-shocking eggs at 4°C for 30 and 40 min respectively, starting 5 min after fertilization. The hatching success of cold-shocked eggs was 25–30%. Cold shocks longer than 1 h caused total mortality. The triploid character of the cold-shocked European catfish was proved by karyological and red blood cell size analyses. The gonads of the triploid fish were significantly smaller than those of the diploids, while the growth rate values of the triploids were significantly higher than those of the diploids.  相似文献

Enigmatic deaths of finfish have occurred in freshwater systems for many years. Some of these fish mortalities can be attributed to the accumulation of cyanobacterial toxins during ingestion of floating feeds or passively through opercular ventilation. We recently were able to document the accumulation of microcystin and resulting catastrophic mortality of pond-raised catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ). The causative organism, Microcystis aeruginosa , was the dominant phytoplankton component within the cooler fall-winter season. Microcystin, a hepatotoxin produced by Microcystis , was detected in water and catfish liver samples. Fish exposed to pond water containing this bloom were killed within 24 h. Necropsy of fish exposed to pond water revealed congested liver and spleen tissues. Environmental conditions associated with several similar bloom events suggest several predictive options to forecast conditions supporting toxin formation, particularly temperature.  相似文献

Although there are differences in performance between genetic groups of channel catfish, identification and management of these groups is difficult because catfish strains look alike and individuals cannot be tagged efficiently. Thus, US catfish producers have not been able to objectively identify fish from different strains or populations, and it has been difficult for them to maintain the genetic purity of populations on the farm. We have developed a multiplexed microsatellite genotyping system to define catfish populations based on allelic frequency and exclusion. A commercial catfish genotype database was developed using catfish samples collected from 24 processing plants in the four main US catfish-producing states. The utility of the system was tested by the molecular characterization of the USDA103 research strain. Using eight microsatellite loci, the probability of falsely classifying an individual non-USDA103 catfish as a USDA103 was 0.0065. From a sample of 50 fish from a putative USDA103 pond, the probability of falsely including two non-USDA103 fish was 1 x 10(-105), and the conservative probability of falsely excluding two USDA103 fish was 1 x 10(-6). This genotyping system provides channel catfish producers with an objective mechanism for identification and management of genetically selected fish.  相似文献

A direct and accurate method of age determination using the relative positions of otolith growth checks is described. In the catfish Guleichthys cuerulescens , otolith length and depth were both linearly related to fish length. Checks appeared to be formed twice per year, at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season (late June to late September). Growth was more rapid in the wet season, when water temperatures were at their height. Calculated mean fork lengths of spring-spawned fish after the first four years of life were respectively 11.5, 19.3, 26.3 and 33.1 cm. Few individuals grew beyond 40 cm, the survival of most of the population being five years or less, but a maximum recorded length of 51.5 cm suggested that catfish may occasionally persist into their seventh or eighth year. The shape of the growth curve indicated that, since a permanent seaward migration of older fish is unlikely, then natural mortality among lagoon-resident G. cuerulescens occurs before a growth asymptote is reached.  相似文献
