Meghalaya, one of the seven states of northeastern India, is inhabited by three distinct tribes, viz., Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia, each occupying respective districts. These tribes live in remote places and depend mostly on surrounding plant resources for their food, shelter, fodder, medicare, and other cultural purposes. Local hill agricultural practice—“slash-and-burn”—and encroaching civilization are responsible for diminishing the local uses of the plants. Hence, it was felt worthwhile to record the native uses of these weeds before the information is buried. The present paper deals with the ethnobotany of 65 taxa belonging to 26 families ofangiosperms. A generic index is included.  相似文献

A total of 171 plant species used by the Nishis, the Hill M iris, the Sulungs, and the Apatanis of Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India; 12 animal species used by the Nishis were identified. Of the total plant species recorded 38% of the total were leafy vegetables and 28% were edible fruits. Others were used for food, liquor, medicine, household goods, traditional dresses, dyes, tattoos, fish and animal poisons, or for salt extraction. The Sulungs use starch obtained from the pith ofMetroxylon sagu as a staple food. The extensive use of wild plants and animals suggests that the tribes of northeastern India rely heavily on forest resources. The importance of conserving these in the light of rapid conversion of rainforests is emphasized.  相似文献

Survey and census of the hoolock gibbon in West Garo Hills,Northeast India   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
During a long-term study on the hoolock gibbon in Northeast India, a detailed survey was made in West Garo Hills District of the Meghalaya, India from July 1985 to March 1987. Approximately 5,075 km2 of the area was covered. Groups and individuals were counted in 32 localities (812 km2). Interestingly only 1,395 ha was the actual forest area occupied by these gibbons. Forty-two family groups and four floating individuals of gibbons made up the total count. Of these the adult males and females comprised of nearly 67% while the sub-adults, juveniles, and infants were 6%, 12%, and 15%, respectively. Each family group's territory ranged from 14 to 55 ha. Of the 32 localities only 6 had more than one family group. The present paper deals with the diminishing habitats for these gibbons. The discussion is based on the available small forest patches throughout the district (a common feature for the whole of Northeast India) surrounded by bare hills due to shifting cultivation. A strategy for conservation is also outlined.  相似文献

Vitamins and SCFA (short-chain fatty acids) production from Lactobacillus isolates are studied due to its health benefits to the human hosts. Lactobacillus strains are widely used in fermented foods, and few of them are reported with vitamin and SCFA production potential. Therefore, in the present study, vitamins and SCFA production capability of isolates were studied to find the potent Lactobacillus cultures for value-added functional food product development. Five Lactobacillus strains, i.e., KGL2, KGL3A, KGL4, RNS4, and WTS4, were isolated from rice-based traditional fermented foods of Garo Hills, Meghalaya, India. All the well grown isolates were morphologically, physiologically, and genetically characterized. Then, vitamins and SCFA were estimated using HPLC based methods. Vitamins produced in vitamins free assay medium and SCFA in milk medium are produced by Lactobacillus. Lactic acid bacteria produce essential vitamins like riboflavin, folate, cobalamin, and SCFA which have health impacts (anti-obesity, anti-diabetics, anti-microbial, and other chronic diseases prevention) to the host. These vitamins are essential for cellular and metabolic growth of living system. In the study, five potent Lactobacillus isolates viz., KGL2 (Lactobacillus fermentum), KGL3A (Lactobacillus plantarum), KGL4 (Lactobacillus fermentum), RNS4 (Lactobacillus rhamnosus), and WTS4 (Lactobacillus fermentum) were considered for vitamins (B2, B12, and B9) and SCFA productions (lactate, butyrate, and acetate). However, KGL3A had shown highest B2 production (0.7 μg/ml) while KGL2 exhibited maximum B12 production (0.05 μg/ml) after 36 h. Moreover, WTS4 attributed highest folate production (0.09 μg/ml) after 24 h. In addition, RNS4 reported the maximum short-chain fatty acid production (0.77 g/l acetic acid, 0.26 g/l lactic acid, and 0.008 g/l butyric acid respectively). Potent Lactobacillus isolates from traditional fermented foods of Garo Hills, Meghalaya, India (North East Part of India) showed maximum production of B2, B9, and B12 as well as short-chain fatty acids and could be used for their application as health beneficial functional fermented dairy products.  相似文献

Microorganisms were isolated and identified from speleothems at Khasi hill caves, Meghalaya. The aim was to understand their biomineralization potential. Analyses of the speleothems from Krem Soitan, Krem Mawpun, and Krem Lawbah using scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed evidences for microbe–mineral interactions. SEM showed microbial reticulate and beaded filaments, cells, fiber calcites, and clusters of coccoid-like structures. A total of 113 bacterial strains were isolated and identified by a combination of conventional and molecular based tools. 105 strains that were sequenced belonged to the genus: Bacillus, Rummeliibacillus, Staphylococcus, and Brevibacterium. The BLASTn sequence search of 16S rRNA sequences with the National Centre for Biotechnology Information database to establish the identity of the strains yielded similarity scores of ≥99% with the respective organisms. The strains were identified as Bacillus simplex, Bacillus gaemokensis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus albus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus weihenstephanensis, Rummeliibacillus stabekisii, Bacillus wiedmannii, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Rummeliibacillus pycnus, Kurthia zopfii, and Brevibacterium frigoritolerans. These strains were tested for biomineralization on B-4 medium. Five strains (B. subtilis, R. stabekisii, Staphylococcus epiderdimis, B. cereus, and B. wiedmannii) had the capability to precipitate biominerals in vitro. B. subtilis, R. stabekisii, and S. epidermidis precipitated 0.24, 0.36, and 0.35 g/L of biominerals at 22°C at the end of the four week experiment period. These strains increased the pH of the medium from 7 to 8.95. The precipitated biominerals were imaged using an ultra-high resolution field emission SEM. X-ray diffraction of the biomineral precipitated by R. stabekisii showed that it was composed of vaterite and jungite. Whereas S. epidermidis showed that it was composed of calcite, vaterite, and jungite. B. subtilis produced small, circular calcite crystals. This is the first comprehensive report on the possible evidences about the role of R. stabekisii and S. epidermidis in calcite precipitation isolated from speleothems in the Indian caves. These results allow us to postulate that the identified strains have biomineralization potential. Further evidences of the coexistence of exopolysaccharides, whisker fiber calcites, microbial filaments, and coccoid-like forms point to biogenic inputs in the cave mineral formations.  相似文献

In the state Meghalaya, northeast India, >80% of the forest lands are owned by local communities and managed by traditional institutions. These forests are under severe threats due to a number of human disturbances. The present study was conducted to assess the plant diversity and identify the community forests for priority conservation in Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Floristic explorations carried out in the 87 forests reveals the presence of 1300 plant species of which 400 are either rare, endemic or threatened. Of the different forest categories, reserve forests had the highest number of species (1190), followed by sacred forests (987 species) and village forests (786 species). Majority of the forests (56) had high-species richness, irreplaceability level (42 forests) and vulnerability level (54). In terms of area, 13.8% (1666.8 ha) fall under low risk while 1855 ha under high risk zone. High risk zone was mostly represented by village forests. An area of 7661.56 ha of community forests falls under high priority category and hence calls for immediate conservation actions. The conservation priority map generated in the present study will help to concentrate the protection strategy to the demarcated and adjoining areas and help conservationists and planners to evolve effective strategies for conservation of the community forests.  相似文献

This study seeks to identify the change points, tendencies, and trends in climatic parameters and to investigate their relationship with forest cover loss and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in the Garo Hills region of Northeast India.This study is based on secondary data on Precipitation, Maximum Temperature, Minimum Temperature, Relative Humidity, Tree cover loss, and CO2 emission in Garo Hills from 1984 to 2019. Mann-Kendall's and Sen's slopes were employed to calculate the trend of monthly and seasonal climatic parameters, and Pettitt's test was used to estimate the breakpoints.We further attempted to identify the relationship between the variables under consideration using Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. The results indicate that precipitation levels were generally decreasing over the majority of months and seasons.The maximum temperature showed a marked increase, while the minimum temperature experienced a decrease in all seasons after 2008. From 1999 onwards, the relative humidity has been on the rise in all seasons except monsoon. Regression analysis reveals that the relative humidity and maximum temperature contributed negatively to precipitation. The maximum temperature was positively correlated with both forest cover loss (r = +0.58) and CO2 emission (r = +0.59), while the minimum temperature was negatively correlated with both (r = −0.59 and r = −0.59). This study will provide stakeholders with an understanding of how weather factors vary over time, how forest cover loss and CO2 emissions affect weather patterns in the region, and how to develop climate mitigation strategies.  相似文献

The Khasis are one of the matrilineal tribes of Meghalaya in Northeast India. They belong to the Indo-Mongoloid racial stock, and speak the Monkhmer language of the Austro-Asiatic group. They have their own traditional religion (Niam Khasi), but about 65% of them have converted to Christianity. A few Khasi members have also embraced Islam through matrimonial relationship with immigrant Muslim males. The present study was based on a cross-sectional sample of 1,351 urban Khasi boys aged 3-18 years belonging to these three religious groups, with a view to understanding the effects of socioeconomic factors on growth and nutritional status, using anthropometric variables such as weight and height. The findings showed that about 60%, 29%, and 6% of these boys were below -2 Z-scores of the US National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) references in respect of weight for age, height for age, and body mass index for age, respectively. The logistic regression coefficient (beta +/- standard error) indicated that the prevalence of low weight for age (below -2 Z-scores of the NCHS references) was positively associated with age (0.088 +/- 0.014, P<0.0001), while it was inversely associated with household income (-1.216 +/- 0.030, P<0.0001). Likewise, low height for age Z-score was negatively associated with household income (-1.056 +/- 0.130, P<0.0001), although such a relationship was not significant in the case of low body mass index for age (-0.169 +/- 0.229, P>0.05). There were also significant differences between religious groups in respect of anthropometric variables. Allowing for household income, the ANCOVA test indicated that Muslim Khasi boys, who were the offspring of intermarriages between Khasi females and immigrant Muslim males, were significantly heavier and taller than Christian and Niam Khasi boys almost across ages. From about 3-10 years of age, Muslim Khasi boys were, on average, comparable to the 5th and 25th percentiles of the NCHS references of height and weight, respectively. Although it looks as though genetic mechanisms like heterosis and/or gene flow might also be associated with the larger body size in Muslim boys, such a conjecture could only be substantiated or refuted by further studies concerning genetic and more socioeconomic data on both immigrant and nonimmigrant populations.  相似文献

Northeast India, the only region which currently forms a land bridge between the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, has been proposed as an important corridor for the initial peopling of East Asia. Given that the Austro-Asiatic linguistic family is considered to be the oldest and spoken by certain tribes in India, Northeast India and entire Southeast Asia, we expect that populations of this family from Northeast India should provide the signatures of genetic link between Indian and Southeast Asian populations. In order to test this hypothesis, we analyzed mtDNA and Y-Chromosome SNP and STR data of the eight groups of the Austro-Asiatic Khasi from Northeast India and the neighboring Garo and compared with that of other relevant Asian populations. The results suggest that the Austro-Asiatic Khasi tribes of Northeast India represent a genetic continuity between the populations of South and Southeast Asia, thereby advocating that northeast India could have been a major corridor for the movement of populations from India to East/Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Four Mongoloid populations, viz., Garo , Hajong , Rabha and Koch, belonging to the Tibetoburman language family of Garo Hills, India, were examined for blood types ( A1A2BO , Rh, MN), secretor factor, ability to taste PTC and cerumen types. Gene A1 is more frequent than B in Hajong and Rabha . Garo shows a higher frequency of gene B, Koch also shows a little higher frequency of gene B than A. R1 is the commonest chromosome in all the groups followed by R2. Frequency of gene M is very high in all these populations. In respect of ABH secretion in saliva, there is preponderance of the secretor gene. Incidence of non- taster gene is somewhat lower in them. Dry cerumen gene is frequent in these Mongoloid groups. In general, the Garo Hills populations show closer affinity to the Mongoloids of Northeast India in respect of gene frequencies.  相似文献

The autosomal AmpFLSTR markers validated and widely used for forensic applications are used in this study to examine the extent of diversity and genetic relationships among nine Meghalaya populations. Altogether, 932 chromosomes from 9 populations were analyzed using 9 tetrameric AmpFLSTR loci. The included populations were all seven subtribes of the Austro-Asiatic Mon-Khmer-speaking Khasi and the neighboring Tibeto-Burman Garo. The Lyngngam, which are linguistically closer to the Khasi but are culturally intermediate between the Khasi and the Garo, are also included in the study. Although most of the microsatellite loci are highly polymorphic in each of these populations, the allele distributions are fairly uniform across the Meghalaya populations, suggesting relative homogeneity among them. Concurrent with this, the coefficient of gene differentiation (G(ST)) is observed to be low (0.026+/-0.002). This is naturally reflected in the lack of clear differentiation and clustering pattern of the Meghalaya tribes based on either geographic proximity or the historical or current affiliations of these tribes. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) suggests no significant population structure. The structure analysis further suggests that, barring War-Khasi and Pnar, no other population shows any semblance of genetic identity. Even the position of the linguistically distinct Garo is not portrayed as separate from the Khasi. However, when comparable data from other Indian, Southeast Asian, and other continental populations were analyzed, the Meghalaya populations formed a compact cluster clearly separated from other populations, suggesting genetic identity of the Meghalaya populations as a whole. These results are concurrent with the hypothesis of a common and recent origin of these Meghalaya populations, whose genetic differentiation is overwhelmed by the homogenizing effect of continuous gene flow.  相似文献

Moonmilk, a microcrystalline secondary cave deposit, actively forms on the floor of Krem Mawmluh – a limestone cave in Meghalaya, Northeastern India. Due to the abundance of micrite and calcified microbial filaments, we hypothesize that these deposits form as a result of ongoing microbial interactions. Consistent with this idea, we report electron microscopic and microbiological evidences for the biological origin of moonmilk in Krem Mawmluh. Scanning electron microscopy indicated abundant calcified microbial filaments, needle calcite, fibre calcites (micro-fibre and nano-fibre calcite crystals), biofilm and microbial filaments in the moonmilk. The total viable culturable microbes showed high population densities for microbes in the moonmilk and moonmilk pool waters. In vitro culture experiments, confirmed the capability of many of the isolated strains to precipitate calcite and some of the identified isolates belonged to the Bacillus sp. and Actinomycetes. These results clearly support the biogenic nature of the deposits.  相似文献

A total of 209 persons belonging to the Koya Dora and Konda Kammara tribes in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, have been tested for electrophoretic variation in 9 red cell enzyme systems. The gene frequencies for the systems showing variation are, in general, within the range for other Andhra Pradesh tribal populations. There is 1 example of PHI 2-1 in the Konda Kammara, while 1 case each of PHI 3-1 and 2-1 are reported in the Koya Dora. In PGM1, there is one example of the 6-2 phenotype and one of 4-1 in the Koya Dora. The Koya Dora show a relatively lower frequency of the EsD2 allele compared to the Konda Kammara. The gene frequencies for the GLO system are reported here for the first time among Indian tribals and these are within the Indian range. LDH Calcutta 1 was not detected in either population.  相似文献

Abstract. Four humid grassland communities at three different locations in Meghalaya, India were analysed during 1988 and 1989 for species and life-form composition, diversity and dominance in relation to altitude, soil and prevailing disturbances. Due to the adverse interactive influences of exceptionally high annual rainfall (> 10 000 mm), topography and human interference on soil fertility, the grassland at Cherrapunji, at 1300 m altitude, had a low species diversity (H'= 1.74) and was dominated by three perennial grass species. Similar grasslands, at both higher and lower altitudes on fertile soil and with lower rainfall (ca. 2000 mm), showed higher diversity values (H'= 2.28 at Burnihat and 2.31 at Upper Shillong). The proportion of perennial species and chamaephytes increased with elevation. At the high altitude site a grassland under short-term protection from fires and grazing had a higher species richness, density and basal cover than an unprotected grassland. All grasslands show a clear seasonality, albeit with different patterns, with a maximum in density and basal cover in August. The differences in structure and seasonality are discussed in terms of different levels of stress.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine the extent of diversity at 12 microsatellite short tandem repeat (STR) loci in seven primitive tribal populations of India with diverse linguistic and geographic backgrounds. DNA samples of 160 unrelated individuals were analyzed for 12 STR loci by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Gene diversity analysis suggested that the average heterozygosity was uniformly high ( >0.7) in these groups and varied from 0.705 to 0.794. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium analysis revealed that these populations were in genetic equilibrium at almost all the loci. The overall G(ST) value was high (G(ST) = 0.051; range between 0.026 and 0.098 among the loci), reflecting the degree of differentiation/heterogeneity of seven populations studied for these loci. The cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling of genetic distances reveal two broad clusters of populations, besides Moolu Kurumba maintaining their distinct genetic identity vis-à-vis other populations. The genetic affinity for the three tribes of the Indo-European family could be explained based on geography and Language but not for the four Dravidian tribes as reflected by the NJT and MDS plots. For the overall data, the insignificant MANTEL correlations between genetic, linguistic and geographic distances suggest that the genetic variation among these tribes is not patterned along geographic and/or linguistic lines.  相似文献

The present study was carried out in Indo-European speaking tribal population groups of southern Gujarat (India) to elucidate the allelic and haplotypic content of β-globin system in individuals with HbAA genotypes. 6 neutral restriction sites of the β-globin system were analysed and various statistical parameters were estimated to draw meaningful interpretations. All the 6 sites were found to be polymorphic and most were in Hardy–Weinberg Equilibrium in the studied group. Haplotypes were constructed using two different combinations of the 6 restriction sites analysed. Analysis of the 5 sites revealed a set of three predominant haplotypes, ‘+−−−−’, ‘−++−+’ and ‘−+−++’; and haplotypes ‘+−−’, ‘++−’ and ‘+++’ were found to be the most frequent when the 3 sites were used to construct the haplotypes. Haplotypic heterozygosity levels (> 83%) observed in the present study group were comparable to those observed in African and Afro-American populations and greater than other world populations. All the ancestral haplotypes, +−−−−−, −++−+, −+−++ and −−−−+ were found in the study group. The distribution pattern of various haplotypes was consistent with the global pattern. The paucity of comparable data from other Indian populations restricted one from making interpretations about the study group's relationships with other Indian populations but the results were indicative of older population histories or experience of gene flow by the study group and their affinities with populations of southern India.  相似文献
