Facial beauty plays a crucial role in social interactions, particularly in mating and reproduction. Therefore, the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms used for facial beauty assessment should be susceptible to different evolutionary and cultural pressures across genders and thus shape different observational appraising strategies. Using a novel approach, I evaluated the observers' subjective and unique importance given to specific facial attributes: eyes, nose, lips, and hair, and their spatial organization in the process of appraising the beauty of the whole face. These importance measures reveal the modulation of the integration of attributes strategy across the gender of observers and the sex of face. The degree of agreement about the beauty of the studied facial attributes was modulated across gender of observers and, for women observers, also across sex of face. Finally, I show that beauty appraisal can be mainly explained by a simple additive manner of isolated facial attributes appraisals.  相似文献

We wanted to learn whether activity in the same area(s) of the brain correlate with the experience of beauty derived from different sources. 21 subjects took part in a brain-scanning experiment using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Prior to the experiment, they viewed pictures of paintings and listened to musical excerpts, both of which they rated on a scale of 1-9, with 9 being the most beautiful. This allowed us to select three sets of stimuli--beautiful, indifferent and ugly--which subjects viewed and heard in the scanner, and rated at the end of each presentation. The results of a conjunction analysis of brain activity showed that, of the several areas that were active with each type of stimulus, only one cortical area, located in the medial orbito-frontal cortex (mOFC), was active during the experience of musical and visual beauty, with the activity produced by the experience of beauty derived from either source overlapping almost completely within it. The strength of activation in this part of the mOFC was proportional to the strength of the declared intensity of the experience of beauty. We conclude that, as far as activity in the brain is concerned, there is a faculty of beauty that is not dependent on the modality through which it is conveyed but which can be activated by at least two sources--musical and visual--and probably by other sources as well. The appearance of Fibonacci sequences and the golden ratio in plant structures is one of the great outstanding puzzles of biology. Here I suggest that quasicrystals, which naturally pack in the golden ratio, may be ubiquitous in biological systems and introduce the golden ratio into plant phyllotaxy. The appearance of golden ratio-based structures as beautiful indicates that the golden ratio may play a role in the development of consciousness and lead to the aesthetic natural selection of flowering plants.  相似文献

Once upon a time, there was an unusual corn; and unlike its normal siblings, its stalk grew towards the ground rather than in an upward direction. The sleeping stature of the corn was portrayed in early 1930s as "lazy" by Jenkins and Gerhardt. Later, lazy appeared to be a fashion in the plant kingdom, found in rice, barley, tomato and several other species . These seemingly magic spellchanted plants have drawn considerable interests of plant biologists and breeders for many decades. To breeders, the lazy phenotype, viewed as tillering or branching angles of stems (or termed as culms in crop plants), represents a key characteristic important for controlling photosynthesis efficiency and planting density, and thus a crucial factor in determining crop production .  相似文献
