Afenestrata koreana n. sp. collected from roots of bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) in Gyeongnam Province in the southern part of the Korean peninsula is described and illustrated. Its primary differentiating characteristics are a globose to subspherical body in adults with a prominent neck and terminal cone, thick cuticle, terminal vulva, and deep vagina. Fenestra, bullae, and underbridge are absent. The anus is on the immediate posterior side of the cone. Superficial small tubercules cover all the terminal cone area. The new species differs markedly from the other two known species in the genus, specifically in having three incisures in the lateral field of juveniles and a shorter stylet length in juveniles and adults. The male is unknown.  相似文献

Background

Many extant male animals exhibit exaggerated body parts for display, defense or offence in sexual selection, such as male birds of paradise showing off colorful and elegant feathers and male moose and reindeers bearing large structured antlers. For insects, male rhinoceros and stag beetles have huge horn-like structure for fighting and competition and some male Leptopanorpa scorpionflies have very long abdominal terminal segments for sexual display and competition. Fossil records of insects having exaggerated body parts for sexual display are fairly rare. One example is two male holcorpids with elongate abdominal segments from sixth (A6) to eighth (A8) and enlarged male genitalia from Eocene, suggesting evolution of these characters occurred fairly late.

Principal Findings

We document two mecopterans with exaggerated male body parts from the late Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation in northeastern China. Both have extremely extended abdominal segments from A6 to A8 and enlarged genitalia, which might have been used for sexual display and, to less extent, for fighting with other males in the competition for mates. Although Fortiholcorpa paradoxa gen. et sp. nov. and Miriholcorpa forcipata gen. et sp. nov. seem to have affinities with Holcorpidae, we deem both as Family Incertae sedis mainly due to significant differences in branching pattern of Media (M) veins and relative length of A8 for F. paradoxa, and indiscernible preservation of 5-branched M veins in hind wing for M. forcipata.

Conclusions/Significance

These two new taxa have extended the records of exaggerated male body parts of mecopterans for sexual display and/or selection from the Early Eocene to the late Middle Jurassic. The similar character present in some Leptopanorpa of Panorpidae suggests that the sexual display and/or sexual selection due to extremely elongated male abdominal and sexual organs outweigh the negative impact of bulky body and poor mobility in the evolutionary process.  相似文献

Rhabditis (Oscheius) pheropsophi n. sp., associated with cadavers of the bombardier beetle, Pheropsophus aequinoctialis, is described from material collected in Brazil. Mean body length of the female is 1,217 μm, of the male 872 μm, and of the dauer juvenile 568 μm. The female has six lips with one papilla on each lateral lip and two on each sublateral lip; stoma wall thickened dorsally, metarhabdions with warts, excretory pore near base of esophagus, tail long (c = 8), and phasmids prominent, protruding on scanning electron microscope preparations. The male has 10 pairs of bursal ribs, with the terminal pair considerably smaller than the others; spicules fused distally two-thirds of their length. The new species can be distinguished from other members of the Dolichura-group by its fused spicules.  相似文献

Termites are a group of eusocial insects. Mate choice is the most important step which affects the subsequent new colony foundation and development in termites. This study investigated the effects of the four factors on mate choice in the subterranean termite Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder, including colony origin, entry time, physical damage of antennae, and fresh body weights of male dealates. The results showed that the pairing number of dealates from the different colonies was significantly higher than that from the same colonies. The male dealates with early entry time achieved a significantly higher pairing number than the male dealates with late entry time. The male dealates with complete antennae achieved a the significantly higher pairing number than the male dealates lacking the six terminal segments of antennae. Moreover, the heavier male dealates achieved a significantly higher pairing number than the lighter male dealates. However, there were no significant differences in the pairing time for all the experimental treatments. These results suggested that the male dealates, which are heterogenous, healthy, heavy, and more familiar with the environment in R. chinensis, have the obvious advantages in the mate choice. This rule of mate choice is helpful for termites to avoid inbreeding and to maintain the genetic diversity of offspring, which is very important for the environmental adaptability and development of termite colonies.  相似文献

This paper analyses a fossil human mandible, dated to circa 10 ka, from Watinglo rockshelter on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. The fossil is metrically and morphologically similar to male mandibles of recent Melanesians and Australian Aborigines. It is distinguished from Kow Swamp and Coobool Creek male mandibles (Murray Valley, terminal Pleistocene) by being smaller and having different shape characteristics, as well as smaller teeth and a slower rate of tooth wear. It pairs with the Liang Lemdubu female (Late Glacial Maximum, Aru Islands) in suggesting that the morphology of the terminal Pleistocene inhabitants of tropical Sahul was gracile compared to their contemporaries within the southern Murray drainage. An explanatory scenario for this morphological contrast is developed in the context of the Homo sapiens early fossil record, Australasian mtDNA evidence, terminal Pleistocene climatic variation, and the possibility of multiple entry points into Sahul.  相似文献

Sex-specific senescence has been commonly reported in highly dimorphic and polygynous species. However, whether between-sex differences in senescence occur in monogamous and monomorphic species is poorly known. In this study, we used an extensive dataset of 20 years of mass measurements on free-ranging male and female Alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), a medium-sized, long-lived, social and hibernating mammal, to assess sex-specific patterns of senescence in body mass. We tested for the occurrence of both a decrease in body mass scaled to absolute age (called chronological senescence) and a decrease in body mass scaled to individual age at death (called terminal decline). Whereas males showed evidence of both chronological senescence and terminal decline in body mass, females did not show any detectable senescence in body mass. This unexpected between-sex difference of senescence in a species subject to weak sexual selection might be shaped either by costs of an asymmetric intra-sex competition for mates or by costs of social thermoregulation.  相似文献

Discovered in 1909 by Retzius and described mainly by morphology, the cytoplasmic droplet of sperm (renamed here the Hermes body) is conserved among all mammalian species but largely undefined at the molecular level. Tandem mass spectrometry of the isolated Hermes body from rat epididymal sperm characterized 1511 proteins, 43 of which were localized to the structure in situ by light microscopy and two by quantitative electron microscopy localization. Glucose transporter 3 (GLUT-3) glycolytic enzymes, selected membrane traffic and cytoskeletal proteins were highly abundant and concentrated in the Hermes body. By electron microscope gold antibody labelling, the Golgi trafficking protein TMED7/p27 localized to unstacked flattened cisternae of the Hermes body, as did GLUT-3, the most abundant protein. Its biogenesis was deduced through the mapping of protein expression for all 43 proteins during male germ cell differentiation in the testis. It is at the terminal step 19 of spermiogenesis that the 43 characteristic proteins accumulated in the nascent Hermes body.  相似文献

Following a blood meal that initiates oöcyte development, the host-seeking behaviour of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes is inhibited by a haemolymph-borne factor that is released in response to a humoral signal from a vitellogenic ovary. This inhibition is accompanied by a decrease in the sensitivity of the peripheral lactic acid receptors. Implantation of corpora allata, medial neurosecretory cells, or terminal abdominal ganglia from blood-fed donors could not induce the inhibition in sugar-fed recipients. However, fat body transplanted from blood-fed into sugar-fed females suppressed host-seeking behaviour as well as the sensitivity of lactic acid receptors, suggesting that the source of the behavioural inhibitor is the fat body. Resting-stage ovaries from other mosquito species inhibited host-seeking after the A. aegypti host was fed on blood only if the fat body was activated by the donor ovary.  相似文献

Animals use rules to adjust their level of investment in a contest. We evaluate male strategies during contests over females in the golden orb-web spider Nephila clavipes. We tested whether male behaviour changes with female value, and found that contests were similar in intensity and outcome whether the female was a juvenile or adult, virgin or non-virgin, or whether one male had invested sperm in the female. We found evidence that males use a self-assessment strategy when deciding to withdraw from a contest. Loser body size and contestant size difference were correlated with a higher frequency of contest escalation, and fights involving two large males were more likely to escalate than a fight in which one male was small. A multiple regression showed that loser body size had a stronger effect on contest escalation than contestant body size difference. More importantly, the size of the winning male had no effect on contest escalation, a key prediction of a self-assessment strategy. In N. clavipes, body size is the primary factor that determines the outcome of male contests, and males do not appear to assess their opponent or the quality of the resource when deciding to withdraw from the fight.  相似文献

The effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on a number of hepatic and extrahepatic foreign-compound-metabolizing enzyme systems in microsomes from rats, rabbits and guinea pigs were investigated.Following TCDD treatment, the N-demethylation of benzphetamine, aminopyrine and ethylmorphine was suppressed in hepatic microsomes from male but not from female rats. However, both cytochrome P-450 and benzpyrene hydroxylase were significantly stimulated in hepatic microsomes from both male and female rate at doses as small as 1 μg TCDD/kg body weight. The inductive effect on rat hepatic microsomal enzymes was considerably more persistent than the suppressive effect. Following a single oral dose of 25 μg TCDD/kg body weight, benzpyrene hydroxylase of male rat liver microsomes remained significantly elevated for 73 days but the suppression of benzphetamine N-demethylase had gone after 35 days. The induction of benzpyrene hydroxylase in male rat liver microsomes by TCDD was independent of the age of the rat and the levels to which this enzyme was increased was similar in male rats of all ages. However, the suppression of benzphetamine N-demethylase in male rat liver microsomes was age related: the suppression was seen only in adult animals and in the very young (10 days old) the enzyme was actually induced by TCDD. Inductive effects appeared in both smooth and rough-surfaced hepatic microsomes from male rats but the suppression of N-demethylidon occurred perhaps the derepression arises through the interaction of TCDD or metabolite of TCDD, with the operator gene itself.  相似文献

The tarsal setae in 97 species of Leiodidae and eight outgroups were examined using SEM imaging and dissections. Modified adhesive setae present in males are referred to as “male tenent setae” (MTS). In most cases, dilated tarsomeres were associated with MTS, which were always present on the protarsi and sometimes the mesotarsi. MTS are reported for the first time on the mesotarsi of Leptodirini and on the metatarsi in two genera of Sogdini. Contrary to reports in the literature, the reduction in the number of the MTS bearing mesotarsomeres is considered a derived condition. Both sexes of Leptinus (Platypsyllinae) have modified setae (referred to as tenent setae in the literature), probably related to their specialised association with mammals, and a patch of MTS was recognized for the first time among those modified setae among males. Four main types of MTS are recognised: (1) a plesiomorphic discoidal type that has a shaft with a round cross-section and maintains a similar diameter throughout its length until forming the expanded discoidal terminal plate; (2) a minidiscoidal type, similar to discoidal but with a relatively small terminal plate, found in Cholevinae; (3) a conical type, present in Leiodinae (excluding Estadiini) where the shaft increases in diameter until forming the terminal plate; and (4) a spatulate type, where an even wider terminal plate has a lateral projection, derived from the conical form and synapomorphic for the leiodine tribes Pseudoliodini, Scotocryptini, and possibly Agathidiini.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of nestmateship and body size on mate selection through a choice based assay in the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata. A recent study has shown that male and female R. marginata mate with their nestmates and non-nestmates with equal probability if no choice is available. That study could also not detect any influence of body size on mating probability in the absence of choice. To confirm that the same results can be obtained even when the wasps have a choice, we offered a choice of two virgin partners either to a virgin test male or to a virgin test female and measured the probability that the test individual would mate with any particular partner based on nestmateship or body size. We show here that even when a choice is available, neither male nor female test wasps base their mate choice on the nestmateship or body size of the partner. We therefore suggest that the natural mating habit of these wasps is sufficiently promiscuous and not constrained by such factors as nestmateship and body size.  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphisms (SSDs) in body size are expected to evolve when selection on female and male sizes favors different optima. Many insects show female-biased SSD that is usually explained by the strong fecundity advantage of larger females. However, in some insects, males are as large as or even larger than females. The seed bug Togo hemipterus (Scott) also exhibits a male-biased SSD in body size. Many studies that have clarified the evolutionary causes of male-biased SSD have focused only on male advantages due to male–male competition. To clarify the evolutionary causes of male-biased SSD in body size, we should examine the degree of not only the sexual selection that favors larger males but also natural selection that is acting on female fecundity. The obtained results, which showed higher mating acceptance rates to larger males, implies that females prefer larger males. No significant relationship was detected between female body size and fecundity; body size effects on female fecundity were weak or undetectable. We conclude that male-biased SSD in T. hemipterus can be accounted for by a combination of sexual selection through male–male competition and female choice favoring large males, plus weak or undetectable natural selection that favors large females due to a fecundity advantage.  相似文献

Female mating preferences are frequently associated with exaggerated male sexual traits. In the European bitterling, Rhodeus amarus, a fish with a resource-based mating system, male coloration is not associated with indirect genetic benefits of female mate choice, and does not reliably signal spawning site quality. We tested a link between the extent of male carotenoid-based coloration and testis size and number of spermatozoa stripped from the testes. Male body size predicted spermatozoa number, but less reliably than the extent of male coloration. Male color was a highly significant predictor of spermatozoa number, with approximately 26 % of variance in the number of spermatozoa stripped from males predicted from male color after controlling for male body size. Body size, but not coloration, predicted teste size. Female bitterling often risk sperm limitation, especially during pair spawnings, and male nuptial coloration may be under direct selection through female mate choice as a signal of male fertilization efficiency.  相似文献

Female green swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri) prefer males of longer body and sword lengths, which may reflect perceptual constraints. Larger males project a larger image onto the female’s retina at a given viewing distance, which may elicit greater stimulation of the visual system and a stronger behavioral response. This study investigates the effects of male apparent size, as affected by proximity and sword length, on female preference for absolute body size in X. helleri. Females were presented pairs of dummy males in ten treatments organized into six categories: (1) the Actual Length Control where identically sized males were held at different viewing distances from the female; (2) the Sword Compensation Treatment in which viewing distance and apparent length (body + sword) were held constant, pairing sworded with swordless dummies of equal total length; (3) the Body Length Preference Treatment where male distance from the female was held constant, while varying body size; (4) the Apparent (Sword) Length Preference Treatments where male distance from the female was held constant, while varying sword length; (5) the Apparent Length Controls where body length, sword length, and viewing distances varied while holding apparent length constant; and (6) the Experimental Treatment in which the smaller-sworded male of the pair appeared larger. In each of the Actual Length Control, Body, and Sword Length Treatments, females preferred the closer, larger-bodied, and longer-sworded males, respectively. However, females exhibited preferences in neither any of the Apparent Size Control treatments nor any of the Sword Compensation Treatment. Additionally, females in the Experimental Treatment preferred the apparently longer-sworded dummy to the male whose sword was actually longer. These results suggest that female preference for male body and sword length is based on the male’s apparent rather than actual size.  相似文献

Theoretically, sexual signals should provide honest information about mating benefits and many sexually reproducing species use honest signals when signalling to potential mates. Male crickets produce two types of acoustic mating signals: a long-distance mate attraction call and a short-range courtship call. We tested whether wild-caught fall field cricket (Gryllus pennsylvanicus) males in high condition (high residual mass or large body size) produce higher effort calls (in support of the honest signalling hypothesis). We also tested an alternative hypothesis, whether low condition males produce higher effort calls (in support of the terminal investment hypothesis). Several components of long-distance mate attraction calls honestly reflected male body size, with larger males producing louder mate attraction calls at lower carrier frequencies. Long-distance mate attraction chirp rate dishonestly signalled body size, with small males producing faster chirp rates. Short-range courtship calls dishonestly reflected male residual mass, as chirp rate and pulse rate were best explained by a curvilinear function of residual mass. By producing long-distance mate attraction calls and courtship calls with similar or higher effort compared to high condition males, low condition males (low residual mass or small body size) may increase their effort in current reproductive success at the expense of their future reproductive success, suggesting that not all sexual signals are honest.  相似文献

Material attributed to Liangwangshania biloba, a fuxianhuiid arthropod from the lower Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 3) of southwest China, is redescribed, with many specimens illustrated for the first time. Newly recognized features include, potential optical neuropils, a stout posterolateral carapace spine, serrated tergal pleurae, two rows of mediolateral carinae, an abdomen composed of seven segments, the last possessing a tripartite lateral flap, and a triangular telson. The presence of tergal carinae, a prothorax composed of six segments, and a trunk composed of 43 segments tipped with a flap-like terminal segment, increase similarities with the previously described Shankouia zhenghei, thus prompting a reevaluation of the potential synonymy of these taxa. These previously recognized species also show considerable overlap in body size, and the ratios of selected body features, such as the carapace. This, combined with their co-occurrence over a temporally and geographically limited range, further support their synonymy. L. biloba is considered the senior synonym in accordance with ICZN rulings, with morphological differences, specifically the presence of posterolateral spines on the carapace, serrated tergopleurae, and spines on the terminal abdominal segment, attributed to sexual variation. An evaluation of potential sexual dimorphism in other fuxianhuiids, and a reassessment of terminology applied to this group is also provided.  相似文献

The effect of bisphenol A (BPA) on the reproductive system is highly debated but has been associated with meiotic abnormalities. However, evidence is lacking with regard to the mechanisms involved. In order to explore the underlying mechanisms of BPA-induced meiotic abnormalities in adult male rats, we exposed 9-week-old male Wistar rats to BPA by gavage at 0, 2, 20 or 200 μg/kg body weight (bw)/day for 60 consecutive days. 17β-Estradiol (E2) was administered at 10 μg/kg bw/day as the estrogenic positive control. Treatments with 200 μg/kg bw/day of BPA and E2 significantly decreased sperm counts and inhibited spermiation, characterized by an increase in stage VII and decrease in stage VIII in the seminiferous epithelium. This was concomitant with a disruption in the progression of meiosis I and the persistence of meiotic DNA strand breaks in pachytene spermatocytes, and the ataxia–telangiectasia-mutated and checkpoint kinase 2 signal pathway was also activated; Eventually, germ cell apoptosis was triggered as evaluated by terminal dUTP nick-end labeling assay and western blot for caspase 3. Using the estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 182780, we determined that ER signaling mediated BPA-induced meiotic disruption and reproductive impairment. Our results suggest that ER signaling-mediated meiotic disruption may be a major contributor to the molecular events leading to BPA-related male reproductive disorders. These rodent data support the growing association between BPA exposure and the rapid increase in the incidence of male reproductive disorders.  相似文献

Background

A fundamental life history question is how individuals should allocate resources to reproduction optimally over time (reproductive allocation). The reproductive restraint hypothesis predicts that reproductive effort (RE; the allocation of resources to current reproduction) should peak at prime-age, whilst the terminal investment hypothesis predicts that individuals should continue to invest more resources in reproduction throughout life, owing to an ever-decreasing residual reproductive value. There is evidence supporting both hypotheses in the scientific literature.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We used an uncommonly large, 38 year dataset on Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) shot at various times during the rutting period to test these two hypotheses. We assumed that body mass loss in rutting males was strongly related to RE and, using a process-based approach, modelled how male relative mass loss rates varied with age. For different regions of our study area, we provide evidence consistent with different hypotheses for reproductive allocation. In sites where RE declined in older age, this appears to be strongly linked to declining body condition in old males. In this species, terminal investment may only occur in areas with lower rates of body mass senescence.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results show that patterns of reproductive allocation may be more plastic than previously thought. It appears that there is a continuum from downturns in RE at old age to terminal investment that can be manifest, even across adjacent populations. Our work identifies uncertainty in the relationship between reproductive restraint and a lack of competitive ability in older life (driven by body mass senescence); both could explain a decline in RE in old age and may be hard to disentangle in empirical data. We discuss a number of environmental and anthropogenic factors which could influence reproductive life histories, underlining that life history patterns should not be generalised across different populations.  相似文献

Rapid, reversible colour change is unusual in animals, but is a feature of male chameleon grasshoppers (Kosciuscola tristis). Understanding what triggers this colour change is paramount to developing hypotheses explaining its evolutionary significance. In a series of manipulative experiments the author quantified the effects of temperature, and time of day, as well as internal body temperature, on the colour of male K. tristis. The results suggest that male chameleon grasshoppers change colour primarily in response to temperature and that the rate of colour change varies considerably, with the change from black to turquoise occurring up to 10 times faster than the reverse. Body temperature changed quickly (within 10 min) in response to changes in ambient temperature, but colour change did not match this speed and thus colour is decoupled from internal temperature. This indicates that male colour change is driven primarily by ambient temperature but that their colour does not necessarily reflect current internal temperature. I propose several functional hypotheses for male colour change in K. tristis.  相似文献
