Peripheral plasma progesterone and corticosteroid concentrations were studied in ewes grazing oestrogenic pastures during oestrus, pregnancy and parturition in 1974 and during pregnancy in 1975. Haemoglobin (Hb) type A ewes had significantly higher mean corticosteroid concentrations than HbB ewes in both years. In 1974 the concentration of progesterone did not differ significantly between Hb types whilst in 1975 the concentration was significantly (P less than 0.001) higher in HbA ewes. The mean corticosteroid concentrations were higher in selenium-supplemented ewes of both Hb types than in unsupplemented ewes in 1974 but lower in 1975. Selenium treatment did not significantly influence the progesterone concentration in ewes of both Hb types in 1974 but significantly (P less than 0.01) increased in 1975. It is concluded that the higher concentration of plasma corticosteroids or factors regulating the relationship between corticosteroids and progesterone could be responsible for the higher estimates of embryonic mortality reported in HbA ewes.  相似文献

Summary The dynamics of the vegetation were studied in the transition zone from the savannah to the Sahel in order to distinguish between the influence of the recent drought and the influence of overgrazing on the natural rangelands. The drought affected especially the different plant species at the northern limit of their habitat. It is, however, not well possible to speak of a sahelisation of the savannah, since the species in regression were replaced by invaders, like Borreria spp, and not by true Sahelian species. An exception was Blepharis linariifolia, which moved to the south. Grazing affected good fodder grasses like Andropogon gayanus, which were replaced by a legume with a short growth cycle, Zornia glochidiata, and an unpalatable annual grass Elionurus elegans. The species much stimulated by the drought, Borreria spp. and Blepharis linariifolia, did not occur in the intensively grazed pastures.The work was carried out with the assistance of M.M.A. Djittye and A. Two experiments were carried out in Western Australia to investigate the effect of zinc supplementation, on the reproductive performance of grazing Merino ewes. We found that supplemental zinc, when provided prior to mating and throughout pregnancy, increased the number of lambs produced by 14% (P<0.05) in both experiments. An intermediate zinc treatment, when supplementation was begun later in pregnancy gave a 9% (P<0.01) increase in the number of lambs in one experiment and no increase in the second. Lamb birth weights were increased by zinc supplementation in Experiment 1 and in Experiment 2, 12–20-week-old lambs from zinc supplemented ewes were 2.1 kg heavier than those from nonsupplemented controls. Plasma zince levels decreased significantly during pregnancy and lactation, but were increased at some sampling dates by 20–25% by zinc supplementation.  相似文献

Dietary melatonin supplementation during mid- to late-gestation increased umbilical artery blood flow and caused disproportionate fetal growth. This melatonin-induced increase in umbilical artery blood flow may alter nutrient availability to the fetus, which may lead to alterations in fetal size. The objectives of the current experiment were to determine amino acid (AA) and glucose concentrations as well as AA and glucose flux across the uteroplacenta using a mid- to late-gestation model of intrauterine growth restriction supplemented with dietary melatonin as a 2 × 2 factorial design. At day 50 of gestation, 32 ewes were supplemented with 5 mg of melatonin (MEL) or no melatonin (CON) and were allocated to receive 100% (adequate; ADQ) or 60% (restricted; RES) of nutrient requirements. On day 130 of gestation, uterine and umbilical blood flows were determined via Doppler ultrasonography during a non-survival surgery. Blood samples were collected under general anesthesia from the maternal saphenous artery, gravid uterine vein, umbilical artery, and umbilical vein for AA analysis and glucose. Total α-AA concentrations in maternal artery and gravid uterine vein were decreased (P < 0.05) in RES v. ADQ fed ewes. Maternal arterial − venous difference in total α-AA was increased (P ⩽ 0.01) in RES v. ADQ fed ewes, while total uterine α-AA flux was not different (P > 0.40) across all treatment groups. Fetal venous − arterial difference in total α-AA as well as uteroplacental flux of total α-AA were decreased (P < 0.05) in CON-RES v. CON-ADQ, and similar (P > 0.20) in MEL-RES v. CON-ADQ. Maternal concentrations and uterine flux of branched-chain AA (BCAA) were not different across all treatment groups; however, fetal uptake of BCAA was decreased (P < 0.05) in CON-RES v. CON-ADQ, and similar (P > 0.20) in MEL-RES v. CON-ADQ. Uterine uptake of glucose was not different (P ⩾ 0.08) across all treatment groups, while uteroplacental uptake of glucose was increased (P ⩽ 0.05) in RES v. ADQ ewes. In conclusion, maternal nutrient restriction increased maternal arterial − venous difference in total α-AA, while total uterine α-AA flux was unaffected by maternal nutrient restriction. Melatonin supplementation did not impact maternal serum concentrations or uterine flux of glucose or AA; however, melatonin did improve fetal BCAA uptake during maternal nutrient restriction.  相似文献

A 79-day rotational grazing experiment was conducted over the summer and autumn of 2007 to compare effects of grazing willow (Salix spp.) fodder blocks, a combination of small trees (i.e., 1.0 m) and herbage, or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)/white clover (Trifolium repens) control pasture on breath methane (CH4) emissions, concentrations and solubility of CH4 and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas in blood, and haematology variables in young growing female sheep (i.e., hoggets). Measurements of gases in blood followed a double equilibration technique with two (n = 20) replicate per treatment. Ten ewe hoggets in each replicate were dosed on day 22 with intraruminal slow release SF6 capsules, an inorganic tracer gas used to calculate CH4 emissions. Breath samples were collected over 5-day periods in weeks 5 (period 1) and 11 (period 2). Total condensed tannin (CT) concentrations calculated in the diet selected by the willow fodder block sheep was 12 g CT kg/dry matter intake, with negligible amounts in control pasture hoggets. Compared to control pasture, grazing willow fodder blocks reduced CH4 emission/kg metabolic body weight (BW0.75) by 20% in period 1 (P<0.01), but not in period 2. Blood CH4 concentrations (ng/mL blood) were similar for both groups on day 36, but higher (P<0.001) on day 76 for hoggets grazing willow fodder blocks, while a different trend was observed for SF6 blood concentration being higher (P<0.01) on day 36 in hoggets grazing willow fodder blocks, but similar in both groups on day 76. Repeatability of blood CH4 concentration was 75% in period versus 84% in period 2. Methane and SF6 Ostwald solubility coefficients in blood were similar in both periods for sheep grazing willow fodder blocks and the control pasture. Hoggets grazing willow fodder blocks had lower BW gain (65 g/day), carcass weight (16.1 kg) and carcass fatness (9.2 mm) than hoggets grazing control pasture (102 g; 18.3 kg; 11 mm). Hoggets dosed with SF6 capsules had lower (P<0.05) red blood cells, haemoglobin and haematocrit concentrations when grazing either willow fodder blocks or control pasture, while neutrophil (P=0.063), platelet (P=0.073) and monocyte (P=0.072), white blood cell and total lymphocyte counts (P<0.05) were higher for willow fodder block-fed hoggets than those fed the control pasture. Differences in the reduction in CH4 emission between periods from grazing willow fodder blocks may be due to more willow leaf being eaten during the CH4 measurement period in period 1 than in period 2.  相似文献

This study examined the acute effects of a one-hour hypertrophic strength training session (STS) on plasma amino acid concentration following oral ingestion of arginine or taurine in nine physically active men participating in a double-blind and randomised experiment. The subjects took placebo, arginine or taurine capsules (50 mg/kg) in either rest (REST) or STS condition. Blood samples were taken before and at 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after the beginning of the treatment and assayed for plasma amino acids with HPLC. There was a significant interaction effect with STS and sample time for both arginine and taurine in the raw data (p < 0.05). The modelled polynomial data for the arginine treatment showed that the peak concentration of arginine occurred at 69 min at rest and at 104 min in STS, and for the taurine treatment, the peak concentration of taurine occurred at 89 min at rest and at 112 min in STS. In conclusion, one hour of hypertrophic STS slows the increase in the peak concentration of plasma arginine and taurine after oral ingestion of the respective amino acids.  相似文献

Experimental hyperphenylalaninemia has been induced in chick embryos between 11–20 days of incubation by daily injection of α-methylphenylalanine and phenylalanine. Brain and liver weight decreased after 8 days of treatment. An increase of nearly 14-fold in the brain phenylalanine/tyrosine ratio was observed after 9 days of treatment. Similar results were obtained in liver, although the increase found in this case was smaller than in brain. Chronic hyperphenylalaninemia induced a clear rise in the levels of plasma and liver valine, leucine and isoleucine, while in brain these levels did not change significantly. Plasma and brain glycine content was also enhanced by this treatment. Brain tyrosine concentration was clearly decreased in these conditions, in contrast to the enhancement reported after this and other treatments in various animal species. Thus, the higher value of the brain phenylalanine/tyrosine ratio obtained by α-methylphenylalanine plus phenylalanine administration was due to both an increase in the phenylalanine and a decrease in the tyrosine levels, conditions that have been also found in human phenylketonurics. Therefore, the treatment here reported was an excellent method for imitating the conditions of phenylketonuria during the period of rapid myelination in the chick, one of the most dramatic in nervous system development.  相似文献

While both the quantity and quality of food ingested are potent regulators of whole body protein metabolism in ruminants, little data are available on responses across a wide range of intakes. The current study examined the responses in whole body protein flux (PrF) to such intake changes and compared these with the responses across the hind-quarters (in a companion study). Six growing sheep (6-8 months, 30-35 kg) received each of four intakes of dried grass pellets (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5 times maintenance energy; M) for a minimum of 7 days. At each intake, a mixture of U-13C amino-acids (AA) was infused intravenously for 10 h. Arterial plasma and blood were obtained over the last 4 h of infusion and the concentrations and the enrichments of thirteen 13C labelled AA were determined. The absolute values for plasma Irreversible Loss Rate (ILR) but also converted PrF varied between the AA. PrF values were lower for histidine, methionine, aspartate, glycine and proline (range 68 to 174 g x d(-1) at 1.5 M) than for isoleucine, leucine, valine and glutamate (range 275 to 400 g x d(-1) at 1.5 M). These discrepancies may be explained by (1) the differential AA removal by the splanchnic tissues, (2) the de novo synthesis of the non-essential AA, (3) the transfer of AA from the erythrocytes or plasma to the tissues. The first two assumptions require further investigation whereas recent work has shown a minor role for AA transfers between erythrocytes and tissues. For most AA, ILR and PrF responded linearly to intake but curvilinear responses were observed for phenylalanine, lysine, leucine, isoleucine and tyrosine. These differences were not due to hind-quarter metabolism and may involve the digestive tract and liver.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the bioavailability of selenium (Se) in Se-enriched yeast and the possible impact of age, sex and area of residence on the Se concentration in plasma in 179 transplant recipients, as Se clinical effects in the prevention of cutaneous epithelial lesions in organ transplant recipients has been reported elsewhere. Subjects were randomized to receive either 200 μg Se/day (group 1:91 patients) or placebo (group 2: 88 patients) for 3 years. Plasma Se levels were measured at the beginning of the study and after 4, 12, 24 and 36 months of Se or placebo supplementation. Initial plasma Se levels were 90.9±26.1 μg/L for placebo and 94.0±25.3 μg/L for Se-supplemented groups. At baseline, the Se level was not linked to sex and age but to area of residence, although the number of subjects in each area was insufficient to draw any conclusions. Plasma Se levels were statistically lower in cases of liver transplant compared to kidney and heart transplant (p=0.03). Over the 3-year period of supplementation, plasma Se in the supplemented subjects was significantly higher than in the placebo group (p<0.01) and there was an interaction (p<0.01) between supplementation and time for plasma Se. Supplementation with Se-enriched yeast significantly increased the Se concentration in plasma of the patients to a plateau: the mean plasma Se of the Se-supplemented patients increased to 164.7±35.8 μg/L at 4 months and then remained similar at 12 (176.1±48.3 μg/L), 24 (176.1±54.2 μg/L) and 36 (182.2±46.4 μg/L) months.  相似文献
