The order Ceraceosorales (Ustilaginomycotina) currently includes the single genus Ceraceosorus, with one species, Ceraceosorus bombacis, parasitic on Bombax ceiba in India. The diversity, biogeography, evolution, and phylogenetic relationships of this order are still relatively unknown. Here, a second species of Ceraceosorus is described from West Africa as a novel species, Ceraceosorus africanus, infecting Bombax costatum in Benin, Ghana, and Togo. This species produces conspicuous fructifications, similar to corticioid basidiomata when mature, but sorus-like in early stages of ontogenetic development. The fructifications cover much of the leaf surface and resemble leaf blight. This contrasts with the inconspicuous fructifications of C. bombacis comprising small spots scattered over the lower leaf surface that resemble leaf spot. Both species of Ceraceosorus differ in several micromorphological traits, infect different host plant species in widely separated geographical areas, and are separated by a considerable genetic distance in 28S rDNA and RPB2 genes. The distinct corticioid fructification of C. africanus is a unique morphological trait within the Ustilaginomycotina. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of a single gene dataset (D1/D2 28S rDNA) supported the monophyly of the two Ceraceosorus species and the Ceraceosorales and their placement within the Ustilaginomycotina. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of a multigene dataset (18S/5.8S/28S rDNA/RPB2/TEF1) revealed Exobasidium rhododendri (Exobasidiales) as the closest relative of Ceraceosorus, both clustering together with Entyloma calendulae (Entylomatales), indicating affinities to the Exobasidiomycetes. This phylogenetic placement is in agreement with ultrastructural characteristics (presence of local interaction zone and interaction apparatus) reported for the Ceraceosorales, Entylomatales, and Exobasidiales.  相似文献

The fertile glossopterid Senotheca is represented by linear fructifications with broad wings attached to the midribs of Glossopteris leaves. The architecture of the reproductive structures supports their placement within the Dictyopteridiaceae. The genus is emended, the validity of two established species (Senotheca murulidihensis and S. kingii) is confirmed, two new species (Senotheca keiraensis and S. magna) are formally defined and one taxon characterized by an attached leaf with coarse venation is retained under open nomenclature. Senotheca is distributed from northeastern India to eastern Australia and ranges from the (?)Artinskian to Changhsingian but the biostratigraphic utility of the genus is constrained by its rarity. Several other reports of the genus from Antarctica and southeastern Australia remain doubtful.  相似文献

A new violet species of Viola Sect. Andinium, Viola lilliputana, is described from a single dry puna locality on an extensive intermontane plateau southeast of Cerro Palla Palla in the high Andes of Ayacucho Department in southern Peru. This diminutive rosulate violet is evidently among the smallest in the world and probably one of the smallest terrestrial dicots. It belongs to a distinctive species group with pinnatifid leaves that is endemic to central and southern Peru, including V. hillii, V. membranacea and V. weibelii. The new species is similar to V. weibelii in its large, strongly adnate stipules, elongate leaf lobes and dilated unappendaged style with ventral stigmatic orifice. It differs conspicuously from all other members of the pinnatifid-leaved group in its conduplicate leaf blades, straight, mostly nonoverlapping, oblong-lanceolate to broadly elliptical lobes with obtuse to rounded apices, and large basally fused pedicel bractlets. Despite many new collections of vascular plants from the high Andes of Peru and northern Bolivia in recent decades, this distinctive new species is still known only from its type locality, collected on the Iltis-Ugent expedition from November 1962 to January 1963.  相似文献

Polypores play a major role in wood decomposition. Based on presence/absence of basidiocarps, it has been shown that richness of polypores in forests is strongly affected by the size of logs. However, no study has addressed the relationship between the log size and basidiocarp production. Here, we examined the relationship between log diameter and number of basidiocarps and volume of the fructification (as surrogate of biomass) of the polypore community in Andean Alder forests from Northwest Argentina. We found a positive relationship between log diameter and basidiocarp production in the whole community analysis (fructifications of all species). This pattern was also followed by dominant species (Bjerkandera adusta, Trametes cubensis and T. versicolor) analyzed individually. The relationship was generally higher for volume of fructification than for number of basidiocarps. Through these effects on basidiocarp production, higher log diameter could promote higher sexual spore production and dispersal hence a higher genetic variability and viable populations of wood-decay species.  相似文献

In 1927, T. G. Halle published an extensive synthesis of the Permian fossil plant assemblages from China’s Shanxi Province that included five genera and species of seed plant that either had ovules in organic attachment or closely and repeatedly associated with foliage. These fertile pteridosperms were the subject of a later publication (1929) that provided additional information on each species, but since that time only Nystroemia pectiniformis Halle has been subjected to detailed investigation based on the original materials. Reinvestigation of the remaining four species has yielded additional examples and new information for each species, and has confirmed the pteridospermalean affinity for three of the four species. Alethopteris norinii Halle shows organic attachment of a pollen organ similar to Wittleseya (Newberry) Halle and is reinterpreted as a microsporangiate medullosan pteridosperm. Emplectopteris triangularis Halle and Sphenopteris tenuis (Schenk) Halle both bear numerous ovules attached directly to the leaf laminae, with Emplectopteris conforming with the gross-organisation of callistophytalean pteridosperms and S. tenuis being interpreted as a derived lagenostomalean pteridosperm. However, discovery of the counterpart to the key specimen of Pecopteris wongii Halle that Halle interpreted as bearing ovules demonstrates this species to be a sterile marattialean frond that agrees with its assignment to Pecopteris. In addition, two further specimens are demonstrated to be fertile organs of previously unknown pteridosperms; Norinosperma shanxiensis gen. et sp. nov. bears cardiocarpalean ovules abaxially on the proximal portions of the frond with ovules positioned directly on the veins of a leaf lamina; Norinotheca shanxiensis gen. et sp. nov. bears large pollen organs abaxially and singly on the vein of the leaf lamina. Collectively Halle’s pteridosperms remain important today as they are some of the few specimens that actually demonstrate organic connection of fertile organs to foliage, helping to characterise the morphology and organisation of this seed plant group. These species also demonstrate the persistence of seed plant families and genera in the Permian of China that became regionally extinct at the end of the Carboniferous in Euramerica, and show that pteridosperms remained an important component of Permian as well as Carboniferous floras globally.  相似文献

Sphenophyllum Brongniart constitutes a common and important element in the Carboniferous and Permian floras around the world, but its records in the Devonian Period are limited and remain to be investigated with respect to their morphology, anatomy, and distribution. Diversity of Sphenophyllum during Late Devonian in South China was significant with the presence of the well-known species including S. lungtanense Gothan and Sze, S. pseudotenerrimum Sze, and S. changxingense Huang et al. In this article, we describe a new species of the genus, S. fanwanense n. sp., from the Fanwan section of Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, characterized by having at least two orders of axes, with six spoon-shaped leaves attached at the node. A comprehensive review of previous records of Sphenophyllum from the Upper Devonian of South China shows that at least four species (S. fanwanense, S. lungtanense, S. pseudotenerrimum and S. changxingense), each with distinct leaf morphology, occur in South China in the Late Devonian, mostly from the Wutong Formation (Famennian). Given the lack of concrete evidence for anisophylly or heterophylly among the Devonian Sphenophyllum species (and more broadly, the Devonian sphenopsids), we suggest that the development of these features later in the Carboniferous and Permian periods was likely related to an increase in complexity of forest communities through time.  相似文献

Background

Structural elucidation and analysis of fructifications of plants is fundamental for understanding their evolution. In case of Ginkgo biloba, attention was drawn by Fujii in 1896 to aberrant fructifications of Ginkgo biloba whose seeds are attached to leaves, called O-ha-tsuki in Japan. This well-known phenomenon was now interpreted by Fujii as being homologous to ancestral sporophylls. The common fructification of Ginkgo biloba consists of 1-2 (rarely more) ovules on a dichotomously divided stalk, the ovules on top of short stalklets, with collars supporting the ovules. There is essentially no disagreement that either the whole stalk with its stalklets, collars and ovules is homologous to a sporophyll, or, alternatively, just one stalklet, collar and ovule each correspond to a sporophyll. For the transition of an ancestral sporophyll resembling extant O-ha-tsuki aberrant leaves into the common fructification with stalklet/collar/ovule, evolutionary reduction of the leaf lamina of such ancestral sporophylls has to be assumed. Furthermore, such ancestral sporophylls would be expected in the fossil record of ginkgophytes.  相似文献

In Cyperaceae, leaf anatomical characters, in particular the presence of a hypodermis or of a multiple epidermis, have contributed in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies. In this family, the leaf epidermis is often described as uniseriate, and the cells of the subepidermal layers having no chloroplasts are treated as hypodermis. Both tissues have a different ontogenetic origin and hence are not homologous. The aim of the present work was to verify the origin of the subepidermal layers in eight species belonging to Cyperoideae. All species studied presented multiple epidermal layers that were confirmed by leaf ontogeny. In Fimbristylis complanata, F. dichotoma, Pycreus flavescens and P. polystachyos the mature leaves present multiple epidermal layers with cells of the distinct layers similar in shape and size; in the other species studied these cells are different. Especially in the latter case, a multiple epidermis is easily interpreted erroneously as a hypodermis, possibly leading to erroneous evolutionary conclusions. Making correctly distinction between a hypodermis and a multiple epidermis, and hence in case of doubt investigating the origin of the questioned tissue, is compulsory in order to use both characters in a phylogenetic context. Though in the past often called ‘hypodermis’, our leaf ontogenetical observations show that in all species studied, the subepidermical layers constitute a multiple epidermis, originating from the protodermis.  相似文献

Sphenopteris damesii (Stur), a rather frequentspecies from the Sarre-Lorraine Coalfield was only known till now as a typical sphenopteridian sterile foliage. The study of a lot of specimens from recent boreholes has allowed us to show the great polymorphism of this species whose foliage, usually deeply dissected, tends to be pecopteridian in the fertile stage. The organization of fructifications and the type of included spores are described for the first time. Moreover, the comparison of the fertile specimens of Sph. damesii with those from the same horizon described by P. Corsin as Pecopteris saraei has revealed similarity in limb morphology, in the organization of fructifications, in the type of spores which proves that P. saraei is the fertile form of Sp. damesii. Consequently, P. Corsin's species is a posterior synonym of Sphenopteris damesii (Stur). The generic attribution of this species sets a nomenclatural question: the features of the fructifications agree exactly with the diagnose of the genus AsterothecaPresl but this genus till now was reserved for sporangia born by typical pecopteridian foliage. Nevertheless, the species is temporarily refered to Asterotheca until further works allow to decide about the subordination of these different characters.  相似文献

Permian ostracods are reported for the first time from the Wordian (Middle Permian) Khao Khad Formation of Saraburi Group (Lopburi Province, Central Thailand). The ostracod fauna consists of 18 species belonging to 11 genera including Bairdia, Bohlenatia, Liuzhinia, Silenites, Acratia, Bairdiacypris, Basslerella, Aurigerites, Microcheilinella, Paraparchites and Shemonaella. The studied Khao Khad Limestone, which are rich in fusulinids, gastropods, ostracods, bivalves and brachiopods, was deposited in a shallow carbonate platform on the western margin of the Indochina Terrane. The ostracod assemblage is typically Palaeo-Tethyan and similar to faunas from the other Lower to Middle Permian limestones in central Thailand.  相似文献

Early Carboniferous palynological assemblages from the SM-4 well located in the Llanos Orientales Basin constitute the only definitively geological evidence of Carboniferous strata in this Basin. Stratigraphically significant species include: Anapiculatisporites concinnus, Apiculiretusispora mutiseta, Grandispora spiculifera, Indotriradites dolianitii morphon, Spelaeotriletes pretiosus and Prolycospora rugulosa. The presence of scarce acritarchs indicates a shallow marine environment. A Tournaisian age, probably reaching the Viséan, is proposed for the interval 2010-2340 ft based on the presence of distinctive spore species with previous records in the Viséan and Tournaisian of Western Europe and Western Gondwana. This report increases the knowledge about the distribution and composition of the Early Carboniferous palynological assemblages in Northern Gondwana.  相似文献

Radiolarians are usually abundant in chert sequences and they have thus been widely used for the biostratigraphy of deep-water sediments. However, there are many difficulties in the correlation of radiolarian biostratigraphic schemes with the standard conodont zones. In this study, 21 radiolarian species were extracted from the Gufeng Formation that crops out in the Luojiaba (LJB) section (western Hubei, China), together with 5 co-occurring conodont species. In this way, it is the first time that the Pseudoalbaillella globosa, Follicucullus monacanthus and F. scholasticus radiolarian zones can be directly correlated with the Jinogondolella nankingensis gracilis, J. aserrata and J. postserrata conodont zones. Accordingly, the 3 radiolarians zones are now firmly correlated with the Roadian to middle Capitanian interval (Middle Permian).  相似文献

Several decades ago, due to eutrophication, Albufera de València lagoon lost the charophyte meadows that covered the bottom in the past but had never been studied in detail. An area close to the lagoon will be restored now to improve water quality and to recover submerged vegetation. To have information on the background of the charophytes from this area, four 80-87 cm long sediment cores were extracted from the lagoon. The subfossil charophyte fructifications (oospores and gyrogonites) were isolated and identified in two of the four cores. Moreover, sediment core fractions from the third and fourth cores were allowed to germinate under several conditions. The study of the lagoon sediments has revealed that at least 11 morphologies of charophyte fructifications existed in the past. Ten of these were determined at species level: Chara vulgaris, Chara hispida, Chara aspera, Chara baltica, Chara tomentosa, Chara globularis, Lamprothamnium papulosum, Nitella hyalina, Tolypella glomerata and Tolypella hispanica. However, one form of Chara gyrogonite did not fit in any known species. L. papulosum oospores and gyrogonites were the most abundant and concentrated in the deepest sediment layers when the lagoon held brackish water. Large changes in salinity due to freshwater input drove charophyte species substitution (disappearance of L. papulosum). During the oligohaline period C. vulgaris sexual propagules were the most abundant. The last charophyte community before its disappearance due to eutrophication was composed mainly of C. hispida, C. tomentosa and N. hyalina (the two latter with small numbers of oospores in the sediment). To characterize the morphology of the unidentified gyrogonite species, 100 specimens were studied. This type could be a local variety of a more common species, probably C. vulgaris, grown under particular ecological conditions. Old collected oospores (more than 45 years old) germinated and could be identified as C. vulgaris and C. hispida.  相似文献

The occurrence of Paleozoic gastropods attached to echinoderms has been recognized for nearly 170 years. Specimens have been illustrated from each of the geologic periods from the Ordovician to Permian. We illustrate two occurrences of Permian platycrinitid camerate crinoids from West Timor, Platycrinites s.s. wachsmuthi (Wanner) and Neoplatycrinus dilatatus Wanner, that have the platyceratid attached on the tegmen on the former and along the radial summit on the latter. Both platyceratids barely cover the anal opening and suppress the development of the arms of at least one ray. The D ray arms are suppressed on Platycrinites s.s. wachsmuthi, whereas the development of the C ray arms and perhaps the most adjacent arms of the D and B rays are suppressed on Neoplatycrinus dilatatus. An additional specimen of Neoplatycrinus major retains the impressed conch outline of a formerly attached platyceratid on the tegmen. This is the first report of a platyceratid/Neoplatycrinus association. The West Timor occurrences are among the youngest known of the platyceratid/platycrinitid association before the End-Permian extinction of the camerates. In addition, an abnormal four-rayed theca of Platycrinites s.s. wachsmuthi is described.  相似文献

Urbanization alters stream hydrology, hence flooding frequency and duration in floodplain wetlands. Potential impacts include shifts in species composition and survival, making restoration and selection of wetland species difficult. Cephalanthus occidentalis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Quercus shumardii seedlings were subjected to experimental flooding regimes typical of floodplain forests in rural and urban settings. Treatments included a rural flood regime with three 7-day floods, an Urban-short flood regime with six 4-day floods, and an Urban-long flood regime with six 10-day floods over a growing season. Specific responses, measured by stem length, leaf area, and leaf, stem, and root biomass, varied between species from different wetland indicator classes. C. occidentalis, a wetland obligate, was well adapted to both urban flooding regimes, whereas productivity of F. pennsylvanica, a facultative wetland species, and Q. shumardii, a facultative species, was significantly reduced by the Urban-long treatment. Growth rates also varied over time, indicating the importance of temporal flooding patterns on species productivity. Because urban flooding regimes directly and selectively alter species productivity, proper restoration methods in urbanizing environments should include species selection based on current and potential future hydrologic conditions and use of reference standards from reference sites subjected to similar urban hydrologic regimes.  相似文献

Structurally preserved arborescent lycopsid fructifications are described from the Fayetteville Shale (Upper Mississippian) of northwestern Arkansas. Specimens of Lepidostrobus fayettevillense sp. n. range from complete cones 22.5 cm long and approximately 1.0 cm in diameter to smaller water-worn fragments. The cones consist of a central axis bearing closely spaced, spirally arranged sporophylls which extend from the cone axis at right angles. Each sporophyll consists of a pedicel which is turned up at its end to form a distal lamina. Sporangia are large and attached to the adaxial surface of each sporophyll. The vascular cylinder consists of a centrally located exarch protostele at least 1.1 mm in diameter. The new species is compared with morphologically similar lycopsid fructifications of equivalent age.  相似文献
