Although both nutrient inputs and zooplankton grazing are importantto phytoplankton and bacteria in lakes, controversy surroundsthe relative importance of grazing pressure for these two groupsof organisms. For phytoplankton, the controversy revolves aroundwhether zooplankton grazers, especially large cladocerans likeDaphnia, can effectively reduce phytoplankton populations regardlessof nutrient conditions. For bacteria, little is known aboutthe balance between possible direct and indirect effects ofboth nutrients and zooplankton grazing. However, there is evidencethat bacteria may affect phytoplankton responses to nutrientsor zooplankton grazing through direct or apparent competition. We performed a mesocosm experiment to evaluate the relativeimportance of the effects of nutrients and zooplankton grazingfor phytoplankton and bacteria, and to determine whether bacteriamediate phytoplankton responses to these factors. The factorialdesign crossed two zooplankton treatments (unsieved and sieved)with four nutrient treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 µgphosphorus (P) l–1 day–1 together with nitrogen(N) at a N:P ratio of 20:1 by weight). Weekly sieving with 300µm mesh reduced the average size of crustacean zooplanktonin the mesocosms, decreased the numbers and biomass of Daphnia, and increased the biomass of adult copepods. Nutrient enrichmentcaused significant increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll a(4–5x), bacterial abundance and production (1.3x and 1.6x,respectively), Daphnia (3x) and total zooplankton biomass (2x).Although both total phytoplankton chlorophyll a and chlorophylla in the <35 µm size fraction were significantly lowerin unsieved mesocosms than in sieved mesocosms, sieving hadno significant effect on bacterial abundance or production. There was no statistical interaction between nutrient and zooplanktontreatments for total phytoplankton biomass or bacterial abundance, although there were marginally significant interactions forphytoplankton biomass <35 µm and bacterial production. Our results do not support the hypothesis that large cladoceransbecome less effective grazers with enrichment; rather, the differencebetween phytoplankton biomass in sieved versus unsieved zooplanktontreatments increased across the gradient of nutrient additions.Furthermore, there was no evidence that bacteria buffered phytoplanktonresponses to enrichment by either sequestering P or affectingthe growth of zooplankton.  相似文献

Carbon stable isotope analysis was carried out on zooplankton from 24 United Kingdom lakes to examine the hypothesis that zooplankton dependence on allochthonous sources of organic carbon declines with increasing lake trophy. Stable isotope analysis was also carried out on particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM and DOM) and, in 11 of the lakes, of phytoplankton isolates. In 21 of the 24 lakes, the zooplankton were depleted in 13C relative to bulk POM, consistent with previous reports. δ13C for POM showed relatively little variation between lakes compared to high variation in values for DOM and phytoplankton. δ13C values for phytoplankton and POM converged with increasing lake trophy, consistent with the expected greater contribution of autochthonous production to the total organic matter pool in eutrophic lakes. The difference between δ13C for zooplankton and that for POM was also greatest in oligotrophic lakes and reduced in mesotrophic lakes, in accordance with the hypothesis that increasing lake trophic state leads to greater dependence of zooplankton on phytoplankton production. However, the difference increased again in hypertrophic lakes, where higher δ13C values for POM may have been due to greater inputs of 13C-enriched organic matter from the littoral zone. The very wide variation in phytoplankton δ13C between lakes of all trophic categories made it difficult to detect robust patterns in the variation in δ13C for zooplankton. Phytoplankton and zooplankton development in a lowland, temperate river   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The longitudinal and seasonal patterns of plankton developmentwere examined over 2 years in a lowland, temperate river: theRideau River (Ontario, Canada). Following an initial decreasein phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass as water flowed fromthe headwaters into the Rideau River proper, there was an increasein chlorophyll a (chl a) and zooplankton biomass with downstreamtravel. At approximately river km 60, both phytoplankton andzooplankton reached their maximum biomass of 27 µg l–1(chl a) and 470 µg l–1 (dry mass), respectively.Downstream of river km 60, the biomass of both planktonic communitiesdeclined significantly despite increasing nutrient concentrationsand favorable light conditions. These downstream declines maybe due to the feeding activity of the exotic zebra mussel (Dreissenapolymorpha) which was at high density in downstream reaches(>1000 individuals m–2). There was no evidence forlongitudinal phasing of phytoplankton and zooplankton, as increasesand decreases in chl a and zooplankton biomass appeared to coincide.Overall, chl a was best predicted by total phosphorus (R2=0.43),whereas zooplankton biomass was best predicted by chl a (R2=0.20).There was no evidence for significant grazing effects of zooplanktonon phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

A conceptual model of the effects of chronic radiation on a population of phytoplankton and zooplankton in an oceanic nutrient layer is presented. The model shows that there are distinct threshold dose rates at which the different plankton populations become unsustainable. These are 10,400 μGy h−1 for phytoplankton and 125 μGy h−1 for zooplankton. Both these values are considerably greater than the current screening values for protection of 10 μGy h−1. The model highlights the effects of predator–prey dynamics in predicting that when the zooplankton is affected by the radiation dose, the phytoplankton population can increase. In addition, the model was altered to replicate the dose rates to the plankton of a previous ERICA Irish Sea assessment (24 μGy h−1 for zooplankton and 430 μGy h−1 to phytoplankton). The results showed only a 10% decrease in the zooplankton population and a 15% increase in the phytoplankton population. Therefore, at this level of dose, the model predicts that although the dose rate exceeds the guideline value, populations are not significantly affected. This result highlights the limitations of a single screening value for different groups of organisms.  相似文献

The impact of fish-mediated changes on the structure and grazingof zooplankton on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton was studiedin Lake Søbygaard during the period 1984–92 bymeans of in vitro grazing experiments (14C-labelled phytoplankton,3H-labelled bacterioplankton) and model predictions. Measuredzooplankton clearance rates ranged from 0–25 ml l–1h–1 on phytoplankton to 0–33 ml l–1 h–1on bacterioplankton. The highest rates were found during thesummer when Daphnia spp. were dominant. As the phytoplanktonbiomass was substantially greater than that of bacterioplanktonthroughout the study period, ingestion of phytoplankton was26-fold greater than that of bacterioplankton. Multiple regressionanalysis of the experimental data revealed that Daphnia spp.,Bosmina longirostris and Cyclops vicinus, which were the dominantzooplankton, all contributed significantly to the variationin ingestion of phytoplankton, while only Daphnia spp. contributedsignificantly to that of bacterioplankton. Using estimated meanvalues for clearance and ingestion rates for different zooplankters,we calculated zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton and bacterioplanktonon the basis of monitoring data of lake plankton obtained duringa 9 year study period. Summer mean grazing ranged from 2 to4% of phytoplankton production and 2% of bacterioplankton productionto maxima of 53 and 88%, respectively. The grazing percentagedecreased with increasing density of planktivorous fish caughtin August each year using gill nets and shore-line electrofishing. The changes along a gradient of planktivorous fish abundanceseemed highest for bacterioplankton. Accordingly, the percentagecontribution of bacterioplankton to the total ingestion of thetwo carbon sources decreased from a summer mean value of 8%in Daphnia-dominated communities at lower fish density to 0.7–1.1%at high fish density, when cyclopoid copepods or Bosmina androtifers dominated. Likewise, the percentage of phytoplanktonproduction channelled through the bacteria varied, it beinghighest (5–8%) at high fish densities. It is argued thatthe negative impact of zooplankton grazing on bacterioplanktonin shallow lakes is highest at intermediate phosphorus levels, under which conditions Daphnia dominate the zooplankton community.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments we tested the hypothesis that nutrients supplied by fish and zooplankton affect the structure and dynamics of phytoplankton communities. As expected from their body size differences, fish released nutrients at lower mass-specific rates than Daphnia. On average, these consumers released nutrients at similar N:P ratios, although the ratios released by Daphnia were more variable than those released by fish. Nutrient supply by both fish and Daphnia reduced species richness and diversity of phytoplankton communities and increased algal biomass and dominance. However, nutrient recycling by fish supported a more diverse phytoplankton community than nutrient recycling by Daphnia. We conclude that nutrient recycling by zooplankton and fish have different effects on phytoplankton community structure due to differences in the quality of nutrients released. L. Peipsi is one of the richest fish lakes in Europe. Planktivorous smelt dominates in the fish fauna. The abundance of zooplankton fluctuates between 43 600–2241 500 ind m–3, with the average 974 000 ind m–3, biomass ranges from 0,09–3,69 g m–3, with the average 1,86 g m–3. Since the 1960s the abundance of rotifers has risen considerably while the mean zooplankter weight (B/N) has decreased from 0.005 mg to 0.004 mg. Zooplankton production (herbivores 20.6, predators 1.8, whole zooplankton community 22.4 g C m–2 per period between May and October) can be considered high. Predatory zooplankton eats on an average 50% of the production of herbivorous zooplankton; about 50% of the whole zooplankton production (PFilt + Pred) reaches fishes. The production of herbivorous zooplankton constitutes 10.1% of primary production. This ratio indicates a direct relationship between zoo- and phytoplankton in the food chain; the detrital food chain seems of little importance. About 6% of phytoplankton energy reaches fishes. The transformation of energy in the food web is efficient. On the basis of zooplankton L. Peipsi can be considered a moderately eutrophic or meso-eutrophic lake.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass, abundance, and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from August 2002 to May 2003 from 14 stations in Yueqing Bay, China. Phytoplankton growth rate and microzooplankton grazing rate were obtained by using the dilution method developed by Landry and Hassett. The spatial and temporal variations of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also analyzed. The results showed that the zooplankton in the Yueqing Bay could be divided into four ecotypes, namely coastal low saline species, estuary brackish water species, offshore warm water species, and eurytopic species. A total of 75 species of zooplankton belonging to 56 genera and 17 groups of pelagic larva were identified in the Yueqing Bay. The coastal low saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area, and the dominant species were Labidocera euchaeta, Acartia pacifica, Acrocalanus gibber, Pseudeuphausia sinica, and Sagitta bedoti among others. There was considerable seasonal variation in zooplankton biomass and abundance in the surveyed areas. The peak biomass appeared in August, descending in November and in May, and the lowest biomass appeared in February. Similarly, the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August, with the abundance descending in the following months: May, November, and February. There were similar horizontal distribution patterns for the biomass and the abundance of zooplankton. They both increased from the upper to the lower bay in February and May, but decreased from the upper to the lower bay in August. Biomass and abundance were evenly distributed in the Yueqing Bay in November. Moreover, there was marked seasonal variation in the species diversity of zooplankton, which conformed to the abundance of zooplankton. Results of the dilution experiments indicated that there was grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in the Yueqing Bay throughout the year though the rate of microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton varied seasonally. Phytoplanktons were growing at 0.26–2.07/d and grazed by microzooplankton at a rate of 0.15–0.48/d in different seasons. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica, 2005, 25(8): 1853–1862 [译自: 生态学报, 2005, 25(8): 1853–1862]  相似文献

In Great South Bay, nanoplankton, (<20 sµm) accountedfor the largest fraction (56%) of zooplankton glutamate dehydrogenase(GDH) activity over a one year period. Microzooplankton (20–200µm) and macrozooplankton (>200 µm) accountedfor 20% and 24%, respectively. Total zooplankton ammonium regenerationin Great South Bay could account for 74% of the ammonium requirementby phytoplankton in winter, but in summer when phytoplanktondemand was greater, and zooplankton population was low, it suppliedless than 5%. This study suggests that the smallest zooplanktonfraction, less than 20 µm, can be the most important asregards nitrogen regeneration in estuarine environments. MacrozooplanktonGDH activity in Great South Bay ranged from 0.18 mg atoms NH+4-Nm–3 d–1 in winter to 3.34 mg atoms NH+4-N m–3d–1 in spring. Over an annual period, the averaged GDH/excretionratio was 20.4 3.5 (n = 10), and this ratio agrees well withobservations by other investigators. Observed macrozooplanktonexcretion rates showed a strong correlation with the excretionrates indirectly estimated from GDH activities. The GDH/excretionratio seems to vary depending on the internal physiologicalstates of zooplankton as well as food availability.  相似文献

The purification and properties of glucoamylase (α-l,4-glucan glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.3) from different fungal sources have been compared. The studies on the conformation and activity of the native enzyme at a function of pH, temperature, substrate concentration and the effect of denaturants and on the role of carbohydrate moiety on structure and stability have been reviewed. The chemical modification of the active centre, binding kinetics of the substrate and active site and the mechanism of action have been summarized. They differ in their fine structure as revealed by their near ultra-violet circular dichroism spectra and contain 30–35 % α-helix, 24–36 %Β-structure and the rest aperiodic structure. The activity of the enzyme is very sensitive to the environment around aromatic aminoacid residues. The glucoamylases are glycoprotein in nature, differ in their content and nature of carbohydrate from different sources. The carbohydrate moiety plays an important role in stabilising the native conformation of the enzyme and is not involved in activity and antigenecity. At the active site of the enzyme, two tryptophan and two carboxyl (glutamate or aspartate) groups are present. It is likely that the histidine and tyrosine residues which are present away from the active site are involved in binding of the substrate. There seems to be seven subsites which are involved in binding of the substrate and the catalytic site is situated in between 1 and 2 subsites. In breaking of α-1,4-, α-1,3-, and α-l,6-bonds only one active centre is involved. Studies on the immobilization of either glucoamylase alone or as a part of a multienzyme system have been reviewed briefly  相似文献

A new tracer compound is presented for determining zooplanktongrazing activity. The gut content in zooplankton is measuredas ß-dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP), which canbe measured even in individual copepods. Species-specific DMSP/Chl-aratios allow applications in, for example, prey selectivitystudies.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a freshwater filter feeding bivalve (Corbicula leana Prime) and large zooplankton (>200 μm, mostly cladocerans and copepods) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with contrasting trophic conditions. A controlled experiment was conducted with four treatments (control, zooplankton addition, mussel addition, and both zooplankton and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10-l chambers. In both lakes there were significant effects of mussel grazing on phytoplankton density and biomass. The effects were greater in mesotrophic Lake Soyang than in hypertrophic Lake Ilgam. Effects of zooplankton grazing did not differ between these lakes, and zooplankton effects on phytoplankton were much less than the effects of mussels. Although mussels exerted a varying effect on phytoplankton according to their size, mussels reduced densities of almost all phytoplankton taxa. Total mean filtering rate (FR) of mussels in Lake Soyang was significantly greater than that in Lake Ilgam (p=0.002, n=5). Carbon fluxes from phytoplankton to mussels (977–2,379 μgC l?1d?1) and to zooplankton (76–264 μgC l?1 d?1) were always greater in Lake Ilgam due to the greater phytoplankton biomass (p<0.01, n=6). Based on the C-flux to biomass ratios, the mussels consumed 170–754% (avg. 412%) of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and 38–164% (avg. 106%) in Lake Ilgam per day. The C-flux to biomass ratio for mussels within each lake was much greater than for large zooplankton. Mussels reduced total phosphorus concentration by 5–34%, while increasing phosphate by 30–55% relative to the control. Total nitrogen also was reduced (by 9–25%), but there was no noticeable change in nitrate among treatments. The high consumption rate of phytoplankton by Corbicula leana even in a very eutrophic lake suggests that this mussel could affect planktonic and benthic food web structure and function by preferential feeding on small seston and by nutrient recycling. Control of mussel biomass therefore might be an effective tool for management of water quality in shallow eutrophic lakes and reservoirs in Korea.  相似文献

UDP-GlcNAc: GalNAc-R ß3-GlcNAc-transferase (core 3ß3-GlcNAc-T, where GlcNAc is N-acetyl-D-glucosamine,GalNAc is N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and T is transferase) isexpressed in a tissue-specific fashion and is high in normalcolonic tissue, but downregulated in colon cancer. To furtherstudy the control of this enzyme, we examined the activity inpig, rat and human colonic tissues, and several human cancercell lines. The enzyme was difficult to solubilize by detergentsand was extremely unstable in the solubilized form. Using syntheticderivatives of the GalNAc-R substrate, we showed that the specificityof the enzyme in normal rat and human colonic mucosa requiresall the substituents of the GalNAc-sugar ring of substratesfor maximal activity. Core 3 ß3-GlcNAc-T was significantlyinfluenced by the structure of the aglycon group. None of theinactive substrate derivatives could inhibit the activity. N-Iodoacetamido-galactosamine  相似文献

This report presents studies on temporal variations of phytoplanktonand bacterioplankton production and the kinetics of bacterialenzyme activity (aminopeptidase, ß-glucosidase andlipase) in the littoral and pelagial sampling sites of a highlyeutrophic lake. Bacterial and algal production correlated wellin pelagic water, but in the littoral there was no significantcorrelation between these processes. The highest activity ofbacterial enzymes occurred during phytoplankton blooms (exceptß-glucosidase). The rates of enzymatic decompositionof organic matter in the littoral and pelagial sampling siteswere similar. Turnover time of enzymatic hydrolysis of the studiedbiopolymers in lake water was the shortest for proteins andlipids during phytoplankton blooms in both sampling sites. Themost dynamic changes in turnover time displayed were for thehydrolysis of polysaccharides by ß-glucosidase inthe littoral samples. The significance of organic matter forbacterial production and enzyme activity, and the role of enzymesin bacterial processing of biopolymers in a lake ecosystem arediscussed  相似文献

Macrozooplankton and microzooplankton effects on the phytoplanktonwere measured in situ in a eutrophic lake. Indigenous phytoplanktonwere incubated for 5 days in 301 mesocosms with either the macro-and microzooplankton (complete), microzooplankton only (micro)or no zooplankton (none). Changes in phytoplankton biovolumewere investigated. Rotifer densities became significantly higherin the ‘micro’ treatment than in the ‘complete’and ‘none’ treatments. Total algal biovolume changedlittle in the ‘complete’ and ‘none’treatments, but increased significantly in the ‘micro’treatment. The results suggest that macrozooplankton (Daphniamagna) suppressed it and microzooplankton (Keratella cochlearis)enhanced it. They had opposite net effects on the phytoplankton.Suppression of microzooplankton by Daphnia probably had an indirectnegative effect on the phytoplankton.  相似文献

A seasonal study of phytoplankton and zooplankton was conductedfrom 1999 to 2001 in Pensacola Bay, Florida, USA, to furtherthe understanding of pelagic food webs in sub-tropical estuaries.Monthly measurements included size-fractionated chlorophyll(whole water, <5 µm, <20 µm), net- and picophytoplanktoncomposition analyzed using microscopy, flow cytometry, and HPLCpigment analysis. Additionally, zooplankton abundance and dryweight were determined from net tows. The results show a phytoplanktoncommunity dominated by the small size fraction (<5 µm),especially during the warm periods. The <5 µm chlorophyllfraction was strongly correlated with cyanobacterial abundanceand zeaxanthin. Cyanobacteria (cf. Synechococcus) abundancepeaked during summer in the upper estuary, typically exceeding3 x 109 L-1, and was strongly correlated with temperature. Cyanobacteriaabundance at the freshwater end of the Bay (in the EscambiaRiver) was very low, suggesting that cyanobacteria were notdelivered via freshwater. Two pigmentation types of cyanobacteriawere observed. Phycoerythrin-containing cells (PE-rich) weremore abundant at the marine end, while phycocyanin-containingcells (PC-rich) were more abundant in the upper estuary. Thelarger algae (>5–10 µm) were predominantly composedof diatoms, followed by chlorophytes, cryptophytes and dinoflagellates. The three most abundant genera of diatoms were Thalassiosira,Pennales and Cyclotella. Zooplankton biomass averaged 12.2 µgC L-1, with peak biomass occurring during May (  相似文献

Grazing of dominant zooplankton copepods (Calanoides acutus, and Metridia gerlachei), salps (Salpa thompsoni) and microzooplankton was determined during the austral summer of 1998/1999 at the seasonal ice zone of the Prydz Bay region. The objective was to measure the ingestion rates of zooplankton at the seasonal ice zone, so as to evaluate the importance of different groups of zooplankton in their grazing impact on phytoplankton standing stock and primary production. Grazing by copepods was low, and accounted for <1% of phytoplankton standing stocks and 3.8-12.5% of primary production for both species during this study; even the ingestion rates of individuals were at a high level compared with previous reports. S. thompsoni exhibited a relatively high grazing impact on primary production (72%) in the north of our investigation area. The highest grazing impact on phytoplankton was exerted by microzooplankton during this investigation, and accounted for 10-65% of the standing stock of phytoplankton and 34-100% of potential daily primary production. We concluded that microzooplankton was the dominant phytoplankton consumer in this study area. Salps also played an important role in control of phytoplankton where swarming occurred. The grazing of copepods had a relatively small effect on phytoplankton biomass development.  相似文献

A series of single-factor in situ experiments was conductedin a mesotrophic lake in Brandenburg, North Germany, to studythe predatory impact of Eudiaptomus graciloides (adults, copepodites, nauplii), cyclopoid copepods (adult Diacyclops bicuspidatus,Thermocyclops oithonoides) and daphnids (adult Daphnia hyalina,Daphnia cucullata) on the microbial community (bacteria, autotrophicpicoplankton, flagellates, ciliates). All zooplankton speciestested reduced the ciliate community significantly and ingestionrates were always higher for ciliates in the 20–55 µmsize category as compared to smaller ciliates (10–20 µm).Adult E.graciloides, which exhibited the highest predatory impacton ciliates, differed from cyclopoids and daphnids by theirability to decimate ciliates to very low abundances. Ingestionrates of ciliates by the crustacean zooplankton followed thesequence E.graciloides > daphnids = cyclopoids = copepodites. While top-down control was evident for ciliates, top-down effectsdown to the autotrophic picoplankton and flagellates were mostlyrestricted to Daphnia-dominated treatments. Top-down effectswere never strong enough to produce negative bacterial growthrates. For all zooplankton tested, clearance rates for ciliatesexceeded those for phytoplankton. Besides the potential of thecrustacean zooplankton to influence the structure of ciliatecommunities, ciliates may contribute to the energy demands ofcopepods and daphnids, especially when phytoplankton resourcesare limited.  相似文献

The hypertrophic Swarzdzkie Lake, Poland, is characterized byhigh species diversity, abundance and biomass of both phytoplanktonand zooplankton (up to 99.5 mg WW L–1 and 817.75 µgDW L–1, respectively). The community grazing rate calculatedwith the use of two empirical models, and based on herbivorouscrustaceans, peaked in spring and early autumn up to 150.6%of water filtered per day, and was the lowest during winter.Simple statistics revealed a positive correlation between zooplanktonbiomass and chlorophyll a concentration (r = 0.404, P = 0.033)and between zooplankton abundance and phytoplankton biomass(r = 0.42, P = 0.028). Canonical statistics indicated, however, that the relationship exists only with size groups and/or livingforms of a few taxonomical groups of phytoplankton. Redundancyanalysis (RDA) confirmed a positive influence of the communitygrazing rate on micro- and nanoplanktonic Cryptophyceae, butnot on the microplanktonic Cyanobacteria, as was suggested bycanonical correlation analysis. RDA also indicated a weak negativeinfluence on nanoplanktonic Euglenophyceae and Chlorophyceaeexerted by filtering crustaceans. Some taxonomically diverseflagellated nanoplanktonic algae were grazing sensitive, whereasmicroplanktonic cryptophytes and coenobial green algae weresignificantly grazing resistant.  相似文献
