Summary The oriental species of the genera Olabidocarpus Lawrence, 1948, Dentocarpus Dusbabek & Cruz, 1966, Labidocarpellus Fain, 1976 and Pteropiella Fain, 1970 are revised. The species are redescribed and depicted except for a few which have been fully described recently. The total number of species known from these genera in this region is now 17. Labidocarpellus papuanus Fain, 1975 is replaced in the genus Pteropiella. The subgenus Dentocarpus (Paradentocarpus) Fain, 1976 is placed in synonymy with Labidocarpellus and the three species described in this subgenus (D. (P.) abyssinicus Fain, 1976, D. (P.) phyllodermae Fain, 1976, and D. (P.) kimberleyensis Fain & Lukoschus, 1981) are transferred to Labidocarpellus. Labidocarpellus notopteris Fain, 1976 and L. novaeguineae Fain, 1976 are now transferred to Dentocarpus. Olabidocarpus peropteryx Fain, 1972 and O. guyanensis Fain, 1972 are transferred to Labidocarpellus. A key is given to all the genera of Chirodiscidae parasitic on bats. ac]19820102  相似文献

To develop a risk-assessment system for small organisms accidentally introduced with imported organisms, we investigated as a first case study parasitic canestriniid mites, which have been imported into Japan via pet lucanid beetles from Southeast Asia. We collected mites from pinned specimens of Japanese lucanids collected before 1999—when the Japanese government lifted a ban on the import of the beetles—and living mites from imported and native lucanid beetles collected after that. No foreign canestriniid was found on any of the native Japanese beetles. Because the mites collected from imported beetles were different from Japanese species, we conclude that the foreign mites have not yet established wild populations in Japan. However, because the Japanese mites migrate between hosts without host physical contact, introduced mites are assumed to be able to migrate from a foreign to Japanese host. In fact, possible contamination was observed in pet shops. We observed host switching in only one direction: Southeast Asian Canestrinia nr spectanda switched to Japanese Dorcus rectus, but Japanese Coleopterophagus berlesei never switched to Indonesian D. titanus. The foreign mites reproduced between 15°C and 25°C, suggesting that the mites could survive in mountainous sites in southern Japan and at low elevations in northern Japan. The ability of foreign parasitic canestriniids to infect and survive on Japanese hosts at temperatures characteristic of much of Japan leads us to conclude that these mites present a potential risk to Japanese endemic canestriniids as well as to native Japanese lucanids.  相似文献

Wild-caught specimens of the lacertid lizard Gallotia galloti eisentrauti from the Canary Island of Tenerife were checked for ectoparasites. The parasitic gamasid mite Ophionyssus galloticolus Fain and Bannert (2000) was very abundant on these lizards. Additionally, parasitism by larvae of two species of Trombiculidae (Prostigmata: Parasitengona) was observed. O. galloticolus was reared in the laboratory on its natural host in order to investigate its life cycle, reproductive biology, and development. The life history of O. galloticolus is documented in detail and compared to literature data of other Ophionyssus species. O. galloticolus was found to be similar to other species of the same genus with respect to the duration of development, the precopulatory association of protonymphs, and the arrhenotokous development of eggs. However, it seems to be more tolerant towards low relative humidity and longer starvation periods than other Ophionyssus species. Evolutionary transformations of the life-history pattern of this genus and other parasitic mites in comparison to its predatory precursors involve a reduction or partial suppression of ontogenetic instars in order to decrease mortality during host-seeking phases, and a compensating increase in growth capacity of the remaining feeding instars facilitated by replacement of sclerites through elastic cuticle or by growth of new cuticle unrelated to a moult (neosomy).  相似文献

The biosystematic status of mite species belonging to the genus Psoroptes Gervais, 1841 is difficult to determine by phenotypic methods and has been subject to taxonomic revisions and ongoing debate. At present, the existence of five species, P. cuniculi (Delafond, 1859), P. ovis (Hering, 1838), P. equi (Hering, 1838), P. cervinus Ward, 1915 and P. natalensis Hirst, 1919, is generally accepted. This classification is based mainly on the host species, the localization of the mites on their hosts and morphological characters of male mites. However, a critical review of the literature indicates that the features used to discriminate between the five species are not unequivocal: (a) the localization of mite populations on host animals is not completely strict, (b) the lengths of the outer opisthosomal setae of male mites, which are the main morphological features used for species discrimination, overlap between the five postulated species, and (c) host specificity cannot be deduced from results of transfer experiments. Rather, conspecificity of the members of the genus Psoroptes has to be presumed which is supported by molecular genetic analyses. On these grounds and on rules of priority P. cervinus Ward, 1915, P. cuniculi (Delafond, 1859), P. natalensis Hirst, 1919 and P. ovis (Hering, 1838) are seen as synonyms of P. equi (Hering, 1838).  相似文献

Phoresy is a symbiotic interaction that results in dispersal, benefiting the relocated organism without negatively impacting the phoretic host. It has long been considered that phoresy among astigmatid mites is somehow an intermediate precursor to the evolution of parasitism within the group. In astigmatid mites, only the heteromorphic deutonymph (hypopode) participates in phoretic dispersal, and the plesiomorphic hypopode may be the key to understanding the dynamics of the evolution of that parasitism. Hypopodes of Hemisarcoptes cooremani (Acari: Acariformes) and their phoretic beetle host Chilocorus cacti (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) have become the experimental focus for studies concerned with the potential forces that influence the transition of a free-living life style into various coevolved relationships. Previous radiolabeling studies applied to H. cooremani and C. cacti determined that hypopodes of H. cooremani acquired resources from adults of C. cacti while in transit, negating the paradigm that the heteromorphy was purely phoretic. To further probe this relationship, we tested whether materials could be passed from the mites to their hosts. We report here a study using a tritium radiolabel, which indicated that beetles also acquire resources from the hypopodes. These results have implications for understanding the complex relationship between H. cooremani and C. cacti. We propose that this relationship should now correctly be defined as mutualistic (not phoretic) and develop a general model for the potential role of parasitism in the evolution of mutualism among the Astigmata.  相似文献

The effect of temperature, humidity and photoperiod on the development of Neozygites cf. floridana (Weiser and Muma) in the cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) was studied in the laboratory. Dead infected mites began to appear 2.5 days after inoculation. At 33 and 28°C peak mortalities were higher and occurred earlier (after 2.5 days), than at 23 and 18°C. Mean LT50 (time for half the infected mites to die) decreased with increasing temperature as follows: 3.9, 3.0, 2.9 and 2.5 days at 18, 23, 28 and 33°C, respectively. When placed under conditions of high relative humidity for a period of 24 h, the percentage of dead infected mites from which the fungus sporulated was highest at 28°C (51.4%) and lowest at 33°C (6.5%). The development of the fungus inside the mite was not significantly affected by ambient humidity or photoperiod. No significant interactions between tested factors were found.  相似文献

A method was developed for the rearing of coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae), and its predatory mite Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on embryo culture seedlings of coconut (Cocos nucifera) in the laboratory. Seedlings in the ages of <2, 2–4 and 4–6 months were infested with 75 field-collected coconut mites and the population growth was determined up to six weeks after introduction. The populations of coconut mites increased exponentially up to five weeks after introduction and declined thereafter on seedlings of all ages with significant differences among the three groups of seedlings occurring over time. At week 5, a significantly higher mean number (±SE) of coconut mites (20,098 ± 3,465) was bred on 4–6-month-old seedlings than on smaller seedlings, and on the largest seedlings the numbers were highest at all time intervals, except at week 2. Neoseiulus baraki was reared on embryo culture seedlings of the three age groups infested with coconut mites, by introduction of five female deutonymphs and one male, three weeks after introducing coconut mites. Predator numbers progressed significantly over time, but the size of seedlings did not significantly influence the numbers. On all groups of seedlings, the mean number of N. baraki increased up to two weeks after introduction on to seedlings and then declined. Many coconut mites were successfully reared in the laboratory for a longer period by this method and it could also be used as an alternative method to rear N. baraki. Development of this method may contribute to the progress of studies on the biology and ecology of coconut mite and its interactions with natural enemies.  相似文献

The effects of relative humidity, temperature, pH and vapor-phase toluene concentration on Tyrophagus putrescentiae growth on Cladophialophora sp. were tested in controlled environmental chambers. It was observed that the mites were able to reproduce readily at relative humidities between 90% and 97% as well as on porous perlite support material pre-soaked in nutrient media of pH 2.5, 4 and 7. Also, the presence of toluene at gas-phase concentrations of 500 to 2000 mg m−3 was found to be non-toxic to the mites. The mites, however, were unable to maintain a large population when the temperature was maintained at 14 °C, and overpopulation of the living space led to declines in mite population over time. Overall, it was found to be relatively simple to cultivate mites that may be used for fungal biomass control measures in biofilter applications. Simulation modelling studies on the biological control of Tetranychus urticae Koch in ornamental crops suggest that the dispersal of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot in the absence of food is important in determining its ability to locate sparsely distributed patches of prey (Skirvin et al., 2002). Experimental work to examine factors influencing dispersal of P. persimilis has shown that ground substrate affects the movement of the predator, and that the greater the number of connections between adjacent plants the greater the number of mites moving. In addition, P. persimilis are able to move across as many as 10 plant–plant connections within 24 h, although the majority of predators tracked moved less than this. Temperature has a significant impact on dispersal of P. persimilis, with more mites leaving release points as temperature increases up to 25 °C, but decreasing above this temperature. This work highlights the importance of understanding how the plant canopy and temperature influence the dispersal of predatory mites. The importance of these results for biological control in ornamental crops is discussed.  相似文献

Studies on the reproduction, longevity and life table parameters of Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese) were carried out under laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% RH and 16L:8D h. As food sources for the predatory mite, Ricinus communis L. pollen, all stages of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) larvae, and Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs were selected. All diets were accepted as food by the adult mites. Female longevity ranged from 29.5 to 42.4 days, the highest value was recorded on a diet of Ephestia eggs. The highest percentage of females escaping the experimental arena was observed on the diet consisting of thrips larvae. The highest oviposition rate (1.9 eggs/female.day) was recorded when the predator was fed on spider mites on an artificial substrate. For other diets, oviposition rates ranged from 1.0 to 1.3 eggs/female.day. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) of I. degenerans varied between 0.015 and 0.142 females/female.day. The diet consisting of castor bean pollen resulted in the highest population growth whereas the diet on spider mites brushed off onto a bean leaf arena resulted in the slowest population growth. This can be explained by the inability of the predator to cope with the webbing of T. urticae, and the high escape rate of the progeny when reared on spider mites. The percentage of females in the offspring ranged from 40 to 73%.This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

Diseases of Mites   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
An overview is given of studies on diseases of mites. Knowledge of diseases of mites is still fragmentary but in recent years more attention has been paid to acaropathogens, often because of the economic importance of many mite species. Most research on mite pathogens concerns studies on fungal pathogens of eriophyoids and spider mites especially. These fungi often play an important role in the regulation of natural mite populations and are sometimes able to decimate populations of phytophagous mites. Studies are being conducted to develop some of these fungi as commercial acaricides.Virus diseases are known in only a few mites, namely, the citrus red mite and the European red mite. In both cases, non-occluded viruses play an important role in the regulation of mite populations in citrus and peach orchards, respectively, but application of these viruses as biological control agents does not seem feasible. A putative iridovirus has been observed in association with Varroa mites in moribund honeybee colonies. The virus is probably also pathogenic for honeybees and may be transmitted to them through this parasitic mite.Few bacteria have been reported as pathogens of the Acari but in recent years research has been concentrated on intracellular organisms such as Wolbachia that may cause distorted sex ratios in offspring and incompatibility between populations. The role of these organisms in natural populations of spider mites is in particular discussed. The effect of Bacillus thuringiensis on mites is also treated in this review, although its mode of action in arthropods is mainly due to the presence of toxins and it is, therefore, not considered to be a pathogen in the true sense of the word.Microsporidia have been observed in several mite species especially in oribatid mites, although other groups of mites may also be affected. In recent years, Microsporidia infections in Phytoseiidae have received considerable attention, as they are often found in mass rearings of beneficial arthropods. They affect the efficacy of these predators as biological control agent of insect and mite pests. Microsporidia do not seem to have potential for biological control of mites.  相似文献

We developed an improved method for rearing Halotydeus destructor in the laboratory. Mite numbers increased rapidly over the summer of 1992–1993 when fed on vetch, Vicia sativa cv Blanchefleur; in contrast mite numbers were low and fell over the second half of the summer of 1990–91 when fed on subterranean clover, Trifolium subterraneum cv Junee. On V. sativa at a fluctuating temperature from 11 to 18°C 200 mites produced a mean of 1308 and 1455 progeny per transfer in 2 years, a 6–7-fold rate of increase per transfer. The mean transfer time was 35 days and using the interval between transfers as a measure of generation time, the mites completed six to seven generations with no evidence for development of diapause eggs from August until April. There was considerable variability in the numbers of mites produced per pot, associated in part with the presence of Verticillium sp. fungus in 35% of the pots during transfers. Improvement in H. destructor rearing resulted from the use of V. sativa cv Blanchefleur as a food source, maintenance of high humidity and adequate ventilation within cages, and the transfer of mites to fresh food sources at early nymphal stages, which reduced the spread of fungal infections.  相似文献

Summary House-dust mites are responsible for serious respiratory diseases in humans. An ELISA assay to detectDermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) mites has been set up. This assay, based on quantitative determination of the majorDp allergen, called Der p I, has been applied for the analysis of growing mite cultures and house-dust samples.Der p I allergen levels in mite cultures are well correlated with the number of mites present as well as with the biological activity of the corresponding extracts. Different methods for detectingDp mites in house-dust samples were compared. The ELISA method shows good sensitivity and specificity, and is particularly suitable for routine analyses.  相似文献

Traps have been used extensively to provide early warning of hidden pest infestations. To date, however, there is only one type of trap on the market in the U.K. for storage mites, namely the BT mite trap, or monitor. Laboratory studies have shown that under the test conditions (20 °C, 65% RH) the BT trap is effective at detecting mites for at least 10 days for all three species tested: Lepidoglyphus destructor, Tyrophagus longior and Acarus siro. Further tests showed that all three species reached a trap at a distance of approximately 80 cm in a 24 h period. In experiments using 100 mites of each species, and regardless of either temperature (15 or 20 °C) or relative humidity (65 or 80% RH), the most abundant species in the traps was T. longior, followed by A. siro then L. destructor. Trap catches were highest at 20 °C and 65% RH. Temperature had a greater effect on mite numbers than humidity. Tests using different densities of each mite species showed that the number of L. destructor found in/on the trap was significantly reduced when either of the other two species was dominant. It would appear that there is an interaction between L. destructor and the other two mite species which affects relative numbers found within the trap. The British Crowns right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged. This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

This study reports (1) a faunistic survey of phytoseiid mites observed inside a vine plot and in neighbouring vegetation (other vine plots and uncultivated areas) and (2) dispersal of phytoseiid mites into the plot studied. These data aim to raise some hypotheses concerning natural colonisation of a vineyard by predatory mites. The study was carried out over 3 years (1999, 2000 and 2001) in an experimental plot planted with two cultivars (Grenache and Syrah) and with Sorbus domestica in a framework of agroforestry investigations. Phytoseiid mites were collected in both cultivated and uncultivated areas surrounding the experimental plot, and their dispersal into the plot studied using “aerial” traps. Densities remained quite low compared to previous studies. The main species encountered in the uncultivated areas and in the traps was Typhlodromus phialatus. Despite the low numbers of phytoseiid mites trapped, densities of phytoseiid mites into the vine field increased during 3 years. Typhlodromus phialatus, the species mainly found in the neighbouring uncultivated areas, was rarely found in vineyards. Another morphologically close species was predominant on vines: Typhlodromus exhilaratus. However, Kampimodromus aberrans the main phytoseiid mite species in vineyards of Southern France was not found in the present survey. Hypotheses for this colonisation process are discussed.  相似文献

To investigate the relative contributions of bottom-up (plant condition) and top-down (predatory mites) factors on the dynamics of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), a series of experiments were conducted in which spider mites and predatory mites were released on bean plants. Plants inoculated with 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 adult female T. urticae were either left untreated or were inoculated with 3 or 5 adult female predators (Phytoseiulus persimilis) one week after the introduction of spider mites. Plant area, densities of T. urticae and P. persimilis, and plant injury were assessed by weekly sampling. Data were analysed by a combination of statistical methods and a tri-trophic mechanistic simulation model partly parameterised from the current experiments and partly from previous data. The results showed a clear effect of predators on the density of spider mites and on the plant injury they cause. Plant injury increased with the initial number of spider mites and decreased with the initial number of predators. Extinction of T. urticae, followed by extinction of P. persimilis, was the most likely outcome for most initial combinations of prey and predators. Eggs constituted a relatively smaller part of the prey population as plant injury increased and of the predator population as prey density decreased. We did not find statistical evidence of P. persimilis having preference for feeding on T. urticae eggs. The simulation model demonstrated that bottom-up and top-down factors interact synergistically to reduce the density of spider mites. This may have important implications for biological control of spider mites by means of predatory mites.  相似文献

Mites are often overlooked as vectors of pathogens, but have been shown to harbor and transmit rickettsial agents such as Rickettsia akari and Orientia tsutsugamushi. We screened DNA extracts from 27 mites representing 25 species of dermanyssoids for rickettsial agents such as Anaplasma, Bartonella, Rickettsia, and Wolbachia by PCR amplification and sequencing. DNA from Anaplasma spp., a novel Bartonella sp., Spiroplasma sp., Wolbachia sp., and an unclassified Rickettsiales were detected in mites. These could represent mite-borne bacterial agents, bacterial DNA from blood meals, or novel endosymbionts of mites.  相似文献

Predation of the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae), by Sancassania sp. (Acari: Acaridae) isolated from field-collected scarab larvae was examined under laboratory conditions. Adult female mites consumed more than 80% of the infective juvenile (IJ) stage of S. feltiae within 24 h. When S. feltiae IJs were exposed to the mites for 24 h and then exposed to Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae, the number of nematodes penetrating into the larvae was significantly lower compared to S. feltiae IJs that were not exposed to mites (control). Soil type significantly affected the predation rate of IJs by the mites. Mites preyed more on nematodes in sandy soil than in loamy soil. We also observed that the mites consumed more S. feltiae IJs than Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae). No phoretic relationship was observed between mites and nematodes and the nematodes did not infect the mites.  相似文献

The behaviour of the endoparasitic tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi (Rennie) on honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) is a challenge to observe because of its small size. Through a microscope, we videotaped this mite's movement on young bees, dead bees and bees exposed to vegetable oil. Previous studies have shown that solid vegetable oil decreases mite infestations in a bee colony. We hypothesized that the oil alters mite behaviour to the detriment of the parasite, thus helping to safeguard the host. Habitat-seeking behaviour, identified as necessary for mites to locate a new host environment, was disrupted on both dead and oil-treated bees. Questing behaviour, which is associated with transfer between hosts, increased significantly on the dead and oily bees. The behaviours of mites were significantly different between all three treatments (x 2=494.96, p<0.001 on dead bees and x 2=851.11, p<0.001 on oily bees). Both questing and seeking behaviours were significantly different on each of the thoracic treatments (F 2,66=7.88, p<0.001 and F 2,66=21.28, p<0.001) and mite questing behaviour was not altered between males and females on live or oily bees (F 1,22=0.25, p<0.62), but habitat seeking was (F 1,22=7.42, p<0.012). The male questing and habitat-seeking behaviours were observed. We conclude that oil-treated bees gained protection from habitat-seeking mites because the normal behaviour of the mites seeking an oviposition site is interrupted.  相似文献
