Global climate change is expected to shift regional rainfall patterns, influencing species distributions where they depend on water availability. Comparative studies have demonstrated that C4 grasses inhabit drier habitats than C3 relatives, but that both C3 and C4 photosynthesis are susceptible to drought. However, C4 plants may show advantages in hydraulic performance in dry environments. We investigated the effects of seasonal variation in water availability on leaf physiology, using a common garden experiment in the Eastern Cape of South Africa to compare 12 locally occurring grass species from C4 and C3 sister lineages. Photosynthesis was always higher in the C4 than C3 grasses across every month, but the difference was not statistically significant during the wettest months. Surprisingly, stomatal conductance was typically lower in the C3 than C4 grasses, with the peak monthly average for C3 species being similar to that of C4 leaves. In water‐limited, rain‐fed plots, the photosynthesis of C4 leaves was between 2.0 and 7.4 μmol m?2 s?1 higher, stomatal conductance almost double, and transpiration 60% higher than for C3 plants. Although C4 average instantaneous water‐use efficiencies were higher (2.4–8.1 mmol mol?1) than C3 averages (0.7–6.8 mmol mol?1), differences were not as great as we expected and were statistically significant only as drought became established. Photosynthesis declined earlier during drought among C3 than C4 species, coincident with decreases in stomatal conductance and transpiration. Eventual decreases in photosynthesis among C4 plants were linked with declining midday leaf water potentials. However, during the same phase of drought, C3 species showed significant decreases in hydrodynamic gradients that suggested hydraulic failure. Thus, our results indicate that stomatal and hydraulic behaviour during drought enhances the differences in photosynthesis between C4 and C3 species. We suggest that these drought responses are important for understanding the advantages of C4 photosynthesis under field conditions.  相似文献

The kinetics of a stomatal response to sudden increases or decreases of CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) was studied in 13 plant species growing in the field. Plants were well supplied with water. In each plant, gas exchange measurements were made on a fully developed leaf that was first left to achieve steady-state stomatal conductance (gs) at 400 μmol (CO2) mol−1) and then exposed to a step change of [CO2] (to 700 μmol mol−1 in one experiment; and to 700 and back to 400 μmol mol−1 in a second experiment). Porometric data were captured in intervals of 3 s until a new steady state was reached.A comparison of t1/2, the half-time needed to achieve new gs, indicates similar responses of stomata in grasses when compared to herbs. The stomata of C4 plants responded in approximately 5 min, the highest closure rate was detected in Echinochloa crus-galli and Digitaria sanguinalis. Opening rates were similar to closing rates and the response as a whole was rather symmetric. In C3 plants, the full response of stomata was much slower. Analysis revealed differences in absolute rates of gs change between C3 and C4 plants. These differences can be related to the specificities of the type of photosynthetic metabolism. C4 photosynthesis enables plants to reduce gs, which can hasten further changes of diffusivity in response to the environmental signals. A possible coupling of C4 metabolism to the regulation of guard cells also has to be taken into account when explaining the observed results.  相似文献

Photosynthesis was characterized for the unicellular green alga Coccomyxa sp., grown at low inorganic carbon (Ci) concentrations, and compared with Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which had been grown so that the CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM) was expressed, and with protoplasts isolated from the C3 plant barley (Hordeum vulgare). Chlamydomonas had a significantly higher Ci-use efficiency of photosynthesis, with an initial slope of the Ci-response curve of 0.7 mol(gChl)−1 h−1 mmol Cim−3)−1, as compared to 0.3 and 0.23 mol(gChl)−1 h−1 (mmol Cim−3)−1 for Coccomyxa and barley, respectively. The affinity for Ci was also higher in Chlamydomonas, as the half maximum rate of photosynthesis [K0.5 (Ci)] was reached at 0.18 mol m−3, as compared to 0.30 and 0.45 mol m−3 for Coccomyxa and barley, respectively. Ethoxyzolamide (EZ), an inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) and the CCM, caused a 17-fold decrease in the initial slope of the photosynthetic Cj-response curve in Chlamydomonas, but only a 1.5- to two-fold decrease in Coccomyxa and barley. The photosynthetic light-response curve showed further similarities between barley and Coccomyxa. The rate of bending of the curve, described by the convexity parameter, was 0.99 (sharp bending) and 0.81–0.83 (gradual bending) for cells grown under low and high light, respectively. In contrast, the maximum convexity of Chlamydomonas was 0.85. The intrinsically lower convexity of Chlamydomonas is suggested to result from the diversion of electron transport from carbon fixation to the CCM. Taken together, these results suggest that Coccomyxa does not possess a CCM and due to this apparent lack of a CCM, we propose that Coccomyxa is a better cell model system for studying C3 plant photosynthesis than many algae currently used.  相似文献

Blue light induced stomatal opening has been studied by applying a short pulse (~5 to 60 s) of blue light to a background of saturating photosynthetic red photons, but little is known about steady-state stomatal responses. Here we report stomatal responses to blue light at high and low CO2 concentrations. Steady-state stomatal conductance (gs) of C3 plants increased asymptotically with increasing blue light to a maximum at 20% blue (120 μmol m−2 s−1). This response was consistent from 200 to 800 μmol mol−1 atmospheric CO2 (Ca). In contrast, blue light induced only a transient stomatal opening (~5 min) in C4 species above a Ca of 400 μmol mol−1. Steady-state gs of C4 plants generally decreased with increasing blue intensity. The net photosynthetic rate of all species decreased above 20% blue because blue photons have lower quantum yield (moles carbon fixed per mole photons absorbed) than red photons. Our findings indicate that photosynthesis, rather than a blue light signal, plays a dominant role in stomatal regulation in C4 species. Additionally, we found that blue light affected only stomata on the illuminated side of the leaf. Contrary to widely held belief, the blue light-induced stomatal opening minimally enhanced photosynthesis and consistently decreased water use efficiency.  相似文献

Uncertainty about long‐term leaf‐level responses to atmospheric CO2 rise is a major knowledge gap that exists because of limited empirical data. Thus, it remains unclear how responses of leaf gas exchange to elevated CO2 (eCO2) vary among plant species and functional groups, or across different levels of nutrient supply, and whether they persist over time for long‐lived perennials. Here, we report the effects of eCO2 on rates of net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance in 14 perennial grassland species from four functional groups over two decades in a Minnesota Free‐Air CO2 Enrichment experiment, BioCON. Monocultures of species belonging to C3 grasses, C4 grasses, forbs, and legumes were exposed to two levels of CO2 and nitrogen supply in factorial combinations over 21 years. eCO2 increased photosynthesis by 12.9% on average in C3 species, substantially less than model predictions of instantaneous responses based on physiological theory and results of other studies, even those spanning multiple years. Acclimation of photosynthesis to eCO2 was observed beginning in the first year and did not strengthen through time. Yet, contrary to expectations, the response of photosynthesis to eCO2 was not enhanced by increased nitrogen supply. Differences in responses among herbaceous plant functional groups were modest, with legumes responding the most and C4 grasses the least as expected, but did not further diverge over time. Leaf‐level water‐use efficiency increased by 50% under eCO2 primarily because of reduced stomatal conductance. Our results imply that enhanced nitrogen supply will not necessarily diminish photosynthetic acclimation to eCO2 in nitrogen‐limited systems, and that significant and consistent declines in stomatal conductance and increases in water‐use efficiency under eCO2 may allow plants to better withstand drought.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses show that C4 grasses typically occupy drier habitats than their C3 relatives, but recent experiments comparing the physiology of closely related C3 and C4 species have shown that advantages of C4 photosynthesis can be lost under drought. We tested the generality of these paradoxical findings in grass species representing the known evolutionary diversity of C4 NADP‐me and C3 photosynthetic types. Our experiment investigated the effects of drought on leaf photosynthesis, water potential, nitrogen, chlorophyll content and mortality. C4 grasses in control treatments were characterized by higher CO2 assimilation rates and water potential, but lower stomatal conductance and nitrogen content. Under drought, stomatal conductance declined more dramatically in C3 than C4 species, and photosynthetic water‐use and nitrogen‐use efficiency advantages held by C4 species under control conditions were each diminished by 40%. Leaf mortality was slightly higher in C4 than C3 grasses, but leaf condition under drought otherwise showed no dependence on photosynthetic‐type. This phylogenetically controlled experiment suggested that a drought‐induced reduction in the photosynthetic performance advantages of C4 NADP‐me relative to C3 grasses is a general phenomenon.  相似文献

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) was overproduced in the leaves of rice plants by introducing the intact maize C4-specific PEPC gene. Maize PEPC in transgenic rice leaves underwent activity regulation through protein phosphorylation in a manner similar to endogenous rice PEPC but contrary to that occurring in maize leaves, being downregulated in the light and upregulated in the dark. Compared with untransformed rice, the level of the substrate for PEPC (phosphoenolpyruvate) was slightly lower and the product (oxaloacetate) was slightly higher in transgenic rice, suggesting that maize PEPC was functioning even though it remained dephosphorylated and less active in the light. 14CO2 labeling experiments indicated that maize PEPC did not contribute significantly to the photosynthetic CO2 fixation of transgenic rice plants. Rather, it slightly lowered the CO2 assimilation rate. This effect was ascribable to the stimulation of respiration in the light, which was more marked at lower O2 concentrations. It was concluded that overproduction of PEPC does not directly affect photosynthesis significantly but it suppresses photosynthesis indirectly by stimulating respiration in the light. We also found that while the steady-state stomatal aperture remained unaffected over a wide range of humidity, the stomatal opening under non-steady-state conditions was destabilized in transgenic rice. Background and Aims

The success of C4 plants lies in their ability to attain greater efficiencies of light, water and nitrogen use under high temperature, providing an advantage in arid, hot environments. However, C4 grasses are not necessarily less sensitive to drought than C3 grasses and are proposed to respond with greater metabolic limitations, while the C3 response is predominantly stomatal. The aims of this study were to compare the drought and recovery responses of co-occurring C3 and C4 NADP-ME grasses from the subfamily Panicoideae and to determine stomatal and metabolic contributions to the observed response.

Methods

Six species of locally co-occurring grasses, C3 species Alloteropsis semialata subsp. eckloniana, Panicum aequinerve and Panicum ecklonii, and C4 (NADP-ME) species Heteropogon contortus, Themeda triandra and Tristachya leucothrix, were established in pots then subjected to a controlled drought followed by re-watering. Water potentials, leaf gas exchange and the response of photosynthetic rate to internal CO2 concentrations were determined on selected occasions during the drought and re-watering treatments and compared between species and photosynthetic types.

Key Results

Leaves of C4 species of grasses maintained their photosynthetic advantage until water deficits became severe, but lost their water-use advantage even under conditions of mild drought. Declining C4 photosynthesis with water deficit was mainly a consequence of metabolic limitations to CO2 assimilation, whereas, in the C3 species, stomatal limitations had a prevailing role in the drought-induced decrease in photosynthesis. The drought-sensitive metabolism of the C4 plants could explain the observed slower recovery of photosynthesis on re-watering, in comparison with C3 plants which recovered a greater proportion of photosynthesis through increased stomatal conductance.

Conclusions

Within the Panicoid grasses, C4 (NADP-ME) species are metabolically more sensitive to drought than C3 species and recover more slowly from drought.  相似文献

Summary It was hypothesized that since sub-stomatal carbon dioxide concentrations are often saturating to photosynthesis at ambient external concentrations in C4 plants at high light, photosynthesis might be insensitive to partial stomatal closure caused by large leaf-air water vapor pressure difference. The response of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis at high irradiance to vapor pressure difference was determined under uniform conditions in C4 plants grown under controlled conditions, and outdoors. In several cases, photosynthesis was less sensitive to stomatal closure than it would have been if photosynthesis had a linear response to sub-stomatal carbon dioxide concentration. No change in photosynthesis at up to 25 mbar vapor pressure difference was demonstrated in the C4 species Portulaca oleracea and Amaranthus hypochondriacus, despite reductions in stomatal conductance of 32 and 17%, respectively. Sensitivity of photosynthesis to leaf-air vapor pressure difference was found to depend on the species and on the growth conditions.  相似文献

Feeding K+ or Na+ nitrate salts in vivo enhanced the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) in the leaf extracts of Alternanthera pungens (C4 plant) and A. sessilis (C3 species). The increase was more pronounced in A. pungens than in A. sessilis. Chloride salts increased the PEPC activity only marginally. However, the sulfate salts were either not effective or inhibitory. Feeding nitrate modulated the regulatory properties of PEPC in A. pungens, resulting in increased KI (malate) and decreased KA (glucose-6-P). The sensitivity of PEPC to malate, which gives a measure of phosphorylation status of the enzyme, indicated that feeding leaves with NO3 enhanced the phosphorylation status of the enzyme. The reduction in PEPC activity due to cycloheximide treatment suggested that increased synthesis of PEPC protein kinase may be one of the reasons for the enhancement in PEPC activity, after the nitrate feeding. We suggest that nitrate salts could be used as a tool to modulate and analyze the properties of PEPC in C3 and C4 plants.  相似文献

The introduced shrub Tamarix ramosissima invades riparian zones, but loses competitiveness under flooding. Metabolic effects of flooding could be important for T. ramosissima, but have not been previously investigated. Photosynthesis rates, stomatal conductance, internal (intercellular) CO2, transpiration, and root alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity were compared in T. ramosissima across soil types and under drained and flooded conditions in a greenhouse. Photosynthesis at 1500 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 (A1500) in flooded plants ranged from 2.3 to 6.2 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 during the first week, but A1500 increased to 6.4–12.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 by the third week of flooding. Stomatal conductance (gs) at 1500 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 also decreased initially during flooding, where gs was 0.018 to 0.099 mol H2O m−2 s−1 during the first week, but gs increased to 0.113–0.248 mol H2O m−2 s−1 by the third week of flooding. However, photosynthesis in flooded plants was reduced by non-stomatal limitations, and subsequent increases indicate metabolic acclimation to flooding. Root ADH activities were higher in flooded plants compared to drained plants, indicating oxygen stress. Lower photosynthesis and greater oxygen stress could account for the susceptibility of T. ramosissima at the onset of flooding. Soil type had no effect on photosynthesis or on root ADH activity. In the field, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, transpiration, and leaf δ13C were compared between T. ramosissima and other flooded species. T. ramosissima had lower stomatal conductance and water potential compared to Populus deltoides and Phragmites australis. Differences in physiological responses for T. ramosissima could become important for ecological concerns.  相似文献

C4 photosynthesis evolved multiple times in diverse lineages. Most physiological studies comparing C4 plants were not conducted at the low atmospheric CO2 prevailing during their evolution. Here, 24 C4 grasses belonging to three biochemical subtypes [nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide malic enzyme (NAD‐ME), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate malic enzyme (NADP‐ME)] and six major evolutionary lineages were grown under ambient (400 μL L?1) and inter‐glacial (280 μL L?1) CO2. We hypothesized that nitrogen‐related and water‐related physiological traits are associated with subtypes and lineages, respectively. Photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were constrained by the shared lineage, while variation in leaf mass per area (LMA), leaf N per area, plant dry mass and plant water use efficiency were influenced by the subtype. Subtype and lineage were equally important for explaining variations in photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) and photosynthetic water use efficiency (PWUE). CO2 treatment impacted most parameters. Overall, higher LMA and leaf N distinguished the Chloridoideae/NAD‐ME group, while NADP‐ME and PCK grasses were distinguished by higher PNUE regardless of lineage. Plants were characterized by high photosynthesis and PWUE when grown at ambient CO2 and by high conductance at inter‐glacial CO2. In conclusion, the evolutionary and biochemical diversity among C4 grasses was aligned with discernible leaf physiology, but it remains unknown whether these traits represent ecophysiological adaptation.  相似文献

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) was purified from leaves of four species of Alternanthera differing in their photosynthetic carbon metabolism: Alternanthera sessilis (C3), A. pungens (C4), A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4 intermediates or C3-C4). The activity and properties of PEPC were examined at limiting (0.05 mM) or saturating (10 mM) bicarbonate concentrations. The Vmax as well as Km values (for Mg2+ or PEP) of PEPC from A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4 intermediates) were in between those of C3 (A. sessilis) and C4 species (A. pungens). Similarly, the sensitivity of PEPC to malate (an inhibitor) or G-6-P (an activator) of A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4) was also of intermediate status between those of C3 and C4 species of A. sessilis and A. pungens, respectively. In all the four species, the maximal activity (Vmax), affinity for PEP (Km), and the sensitivity to malate (KI) or G-6-P (KA) of PEPC were higher at 10 mM bicarbonate than at 0.05 mM bicarbonate. Again, the sensitivity to bicarbonate of PEPC from C3-C4 intermediates was in between those of C3- and C4-species. Thus the characteristics of PEPC of C3-C4 intermediate species of Alternanthera are intermediate between C3- and C4-type, in both their kinetic and regulatory properties. Bicarbonate could be an important modulator of PEPC, particularly in C4 plants. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of a range of trebouxioid lichens were investigated to determine whether variations in net assimilation rates shown by populations of the same species collected from different habitats could be correlated with adjustments in carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM) activity. The activity of a CCM was inferred from the high affinity for CO2 [i.e. low CO2 compensation point (Γ); low external CO2 concentration at which half-maximal assimilation rates are reached (K 0.5 CO2)], the release of a pool of accumulated dissolved inorganic carbon (Ci) during light/dark transient measurements of CO2 exchange and values for carbon isotope discrimination intermediate between those characteristic of C3 and C4 terrestrial plants. Higher net and gross assimilation rates were expressed by lichens collected from shaded woodland habitats. The higher rates were not accounted for by variations in chlorophyll content. Lichens with high assimilation rates also showed an increased affinity for CO2 as demonstrated by low CO2 compensation points and K 0.5 values and the magnitude of the Ci pool accumulated upon illumination and released after darkening of the thalli. However, there was no correlation between assimilation rates and organic matter or instantaneous carbon isotope discrimination measurements, with the latter remaining roughly consistent whatever the provenance or species of the lichen material. The data are discussed with reference to significant environmental factors which are likely to control photosynthesis in the habitats studied. Physiological measurements were used to investigate the dependence of photosynthesis on light, temperature, and intercellular carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the C4 marsh grass Spartina alterniflora. Functional relationships between these environmental variables and S. alterniflora physiological responses were then used to improve C4-leaf photosynthesis models. Field studies were conducted in monocultures of S. alterniflora in Virginia, USA. On average, S. alterniflora exhibited lower light saturation values (~1000 μmol m−2 s−1) than observed in other C4 plants. Maximum carbon assimilation rates and stomatal conductance to water vapor diffusion were 36 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1 and 200 mmol (H2O) m−2 s−1, respectively. Analysis of assimilation-intercellular CO2 and light response relationships were used to determine Arrhenius-type temperature functions for maximum rate of carboxylation (V cmax), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity (V pmax), and maximum electron transport rate (J max). Maximum V cmax values of 105 μmol m−2 s−1 were observed at the leaf temperature of 311 K. Optimum V pmax values (80.6 μmol m−2 s−1) were observed at the foliage temperature of 308 K. The observed V pmax values were lower than those in other C4 plants, whereas V cmax values were higher, and more representative of C3 plants. Optimum J max values reached 138 μmol (electrons) m−2 s−1 at the foliage temperature of 305 K. In addition, the estimated CO2 compensation points were in the range of C3 or C3–C4 intermediate plants, not those typical of C4 plants. The present results indicate the possibility of a C3–C4 intermediate or C4-like photosynthetic mechanism rather than the expected C4-biochemical pathway in S. alterniflora under field conditions. In a scenario of atmospheric warming and increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, S. alterniflora will likely respond positively to both changes. Such responses will result in increased S. alterniflora productivity, which is uncharacteristic of C4 plants.  相似文献

Summary Photosynthesis and transpiration was measured in the large emergent C4 sedge Cyperus papyrus (papyrus) which occupies wide areas of wetland on the African continent. The maximum observed value of net assimilation was 35 mol CO2 m-2 s-1 at full sunlight but light saturation of photosynthesis did not occur. The quantum yield of photosynthesis obtained from the initial slope of the light response curves (0.06 mol mol-1 incident light) was relatively high and close to previously recorded values for some C4 grasses. Measurements made over two days showed that stomatal conductance was sensitive to the ambient air vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and was consistently lower on the day when VPD's were higher. There was, however, no marked midday closure of the stomata. Photosynthesis was also reduced on the day when VPD's were higher. The relationship between net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance was close to linear over the range of measurement conditions, with the result that intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i ) did not vary markedly. There was some evidence that C i decreased at high VPD's. The regulation of stomatal movement in papyrus appears to minimise excessive water loss while not severely limiting photosynthesis. The significance of this strategy for a wetland species with plentiful supplies of water is discussed.  相似文献

In habitats with low water availability, a fundamental challenge for plants will be to maximize photosynthetic C-gain while minimizing transpirational water-loss. This trade-off between C-gain and water-loss can in part be achieved through the coordination of leaf-level photosynthetic and hydraulic traits. To test the relationship of photosynthetic C-gain and transpirational water-loss, we grew, under common growth conditions, 18 C4 grasses adapted to habitats with different mean annual precipitation (MAP) and measured leaf-level structural and anatomical traits associated with mesophyll conductance (gm) and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf). The C4 grasses adapted to lower MAP showed greater mesophyll surface area exposed to intercellular air spaces (Smes) and adaxial stomatal density (SDada) which supported greater gm. These grasses also showed greater leaf thickness and vein-to-epidermis distance, which may lead to lower Kleaf. Additionally, grasses with greater gm and lower Kleaf also showed greater photosynthetic rates (Anet) and leaf-level water-use efficiency (WUE). In summary, we identify a suite of leaf-level traits that appear important for adaptation of C4 grasses to habitats with low MAP and may be useful to identify C4 species showing greater Anet and WUE in drier conditions.  相似文献

Rates of photosynthesis vary with foliage age and typically decline from full-leaf expansion until senescence occurs. This age-related decline in photosynthesis is especially important in species that retain foliage for several years, yet it is not known whether the internal conductance to CO2 movement (g i) plays any role. More generally, g i has been measured in only a few conifers and has never been measured in leaves or needles older than 1 year. The effect of ageing on g i was investigated in Pinus pinaster, a species that retains needle for 4 or more years. Measurements were made in autumn when trees were not water limited and after leaf expansion was complete. Rates of net photosynthesis decreased with needle age, from 8 μmol m−2 s−1 in fully expanded current-year needles to 4.4 μmol m−2 s−1 in 3-year-old needles. The relative limitation due to internal conductance (0.24–0.35 out of 1) was in all cases larger than that due to stomatal conductance (0.13–0.19 out of 1). Internal conductance and stomatal conductance approximately scaled with rates of photosynthesis. Hence, there was no difference among year-classes in the relative limitations posed by internal and stomatal conductance or evidence that they cause the age-related decline in photosynthesis. There was little evidence that the age-related decline in photosynthesis was due to decreases in contents of N or Rubisco. The decrease in rates of photosynthesis from current-year to older needles was instead related to a twofold decrease in rates of photosynthesis per unit nitrogen and V cmax/Rubisco (i.e., in vivo specific activity).  相似文献

Native tallgrass prairie in NE Kansas was exposed to elevated (twice ambient) or ambient atmospheric CO2 levels in open-top chambers. Within chambers or in adjacent unchambered plots, the dominant C4 grass, Andropogon gerardii, was subjected to fluctuations in sunlight similar to that produced by clouds or within canopy shading (full sun > 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 versus 350 μmol m−2 s−1 shade) and responses in gas exchange were measured. These field experiments demonstrated that stomatal conductance in A. gerardii achieved new steady state levels more rapidly after abrupt changes in sunlight at elevated CO2 when compared to plants at ambient CO2. This was due primarily to the 50% reduction in stomatal conductance at elevated CO2, but was also a result of more rapid stomatal responses. Time constants describing stomatal responses were significantly reduced (29–33%) at elevated CO2. As a result, water loss was decreased by as much as 57% (6.5% due to more rapid stomatal responses). Concurrent increases in leaf xylem pressure potential during periods of sunlight variability provided additional evidence that more rapid stomatal responses at elevated CO2 enhanced plant water status. CO2-induced alterations in the kinetics of stomatal responses to variable sunlight will likely enhance direct effects of elevated CO2 on plant water relations in all ecosystems.  相似文献

Recent research on the photosynthetic mechanisms of plant species in the Chenopodiaceae family revealed that three species, including Bienertia sinuspersici, can carry out C4 photosynthesis within individual photosynthetic cells, through the development of two cytoplasmic domains having dimorphic chloroplasts. These unusual single-cell C4 species grow in semi-arid saline conditions and have semi-terete succulent leaves. The effects of salinity on growth and photosynthesis of B. sinuspersici were studied. The results show that NaCl is not required for development of the single-cell C4 system. There is a large enhancement of growth in culture with 50–200 mM NaCl, while there is severe inhibition at 400 mM NaCl. With increasing salinity, the carbon isotope values (δ13C) of leaves increased from −17.3o/oo (C4-like) without NaCl to −14.6o/oo (C4) with 200 mM NaCl, possibly due to increased capture of CO2 from the C4 cycle by Rubisco and reduced leakiness. Compared to growth without NaCl, leaves of plants grown under saline conditions were much larger (~2 fold) and more succulent, and the leaf solute levels increased up to ~2000 mmol kg solvent−1. Photosynthesis on an incident leaf area basis (CO2 saturated rates, and carboxylation efficiency under limiting CO2) and stomatal conductance declined with increasing salinity. On a leaf area basis, there was some decline in Rubisco content with increasing salinity up to 200 mM NaCl, but there was a marked increase in the levels of pyruvate, Pi dikinase, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (possibly in response to sensitivity of these enzymes and C4 cycle function to increasing salinity). The decline in photosynthesis on a leaf area basis was compensated for on a per leaf basis, up to 200 mM NaCl, by the increase in leaf size. The influence of salinity on plant development and the C4 system in Bienertia is discussed.  相似文献
