Climate change has been unprecedented in the last half-century. Tree growth dynamics and responses to climate warming at different elevations vary by study area due to regional diversity in site-specific climatic conditions in the central Hengduan Mountains. A. georgei is the dominant species in high-elevation montane forests in the central Hengduan Mountains. To study the response of A. georgei radial growth to climate and identify tree growth trends at different elevations, tree-ring width chronologies at four elevations across the subalpine A. georgei forest belt were built and growth-climate relationships were analyzed. The primary findings of this study were as follows: (1) radial growth rates of A. georgei decreased with elevation; (2) warming alleviated the limitation of low temperatures and abundant precipitation on tree radial growth at the highest sampling site; and (3) unlike at other elevations, the trend of trees basal area increment (BAI) at the lowest sampling site showed a significant decline over the past 20 years. This suggests the presence of an elevational inflection point, likely between 3800 m and 4000 m, where tree growth trends diverge. These results confirmed that A. georgei at higher elevation in the central Hengduan Mountains currently benefits from higher temperatures. However, the effects of drought on A. georgei at lower elevations would cause radial growth to decrease with climate warming. Therefore, it is critical to establish effective management strategies based on how A. georgei responds to climate change at various elevations.  相似文献

Accurately assessing the impact of climate changes on tree growth or forest productivity is vital to better understand global carbon cycles. Here, we carried out dendroclimatological research on Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis var. microsperma) along an elevation gradient in two sites to investigate the effect of rapid warming on spruce growth in northeast China. Results indicated that trees at two low-elevation sites had significantly wider ring widths and higher basal area increment (BAI) compared with high-elevation sites. Ring widths and BAI of Yezo spruce at low elevations showed a clear growth increase during the 1940s–1970s followed by a significant decline after 1980. However, trees at high elevations showed a relatively stable growth during the 1940s–1970s followed by a significant increase after 1980. Rapid warming after 1980 increased the radial growth of Yezo spruce at high-elevation sites, but reduced tree growth at low-elevation sites. Winter precipitation and growing season temperature were positively correlated with radial growth of Yezo spruce at high elevations, but negatively correlated with tree growth at low elevations. A clear pattern of growth and growth-climate relationship changed in 1980. The temperature threshold for determining the impact of climate on Yezo spruce could change with latitude or site. Difference in drought caused by warming may be the main reason for the opposite response of tree growing at different altitudes in northeast China. The mechanism of rapid warming driving contrasting growth at different elevations should also be investigated in other tree species in NE Asia. In the context of future climate warming, our findings are of great significance for tree growth in assessing forest dynamics and carbon cycling.  相似文献

Climatic change will affect elevational vegetation distribution because vegetation distribution is related to thermal conditions. However, how elevational species distributions are determined by biotic and abiotic factors is not clear. The long‐term plot census along an elevational gradient is indispensable to clarify mechanisms of elevational distribution of tree species. Two congeneric conifers, the less shade‐tolerant Abies veitchii and shade‐tolerant A. mariesii, dominate at low and high elevations, respectively, in the subalpine zone in Japan. This study investigated the population dynamics of the two species at three elevations (low, middle, high) for 13 years to examine why the two species dominated the different elevations from the viewpoints of competition and disturbance. This study showed that growth and survival rates were not highest at the most dominant elevations for each species. At the high elevation where A. mariesii dominated and small disturbances frequently occurred, the recruitment rate of A. mariesii was highest among the three elevations and that of A. veitchii was largely decreased by tree competition. However, A. veitchii was dominant earlier than A. mariesii at the low elevation after large disturbances by the high growth rate of individual trees. Therefore, A. mariesii was superior to A. veitchii at the high elevation because of its high recruitment rate and large reduction of recruitment of A. veitchii due to competition, while A. veitchii was superior to A. mariesii at the low elevation after large disturbances because of higher growth rate than A. mariesii. It is suggested that the elevational distributions of the two species were determined by elevational changes in population dynamics in relation to competition and disturbance. Long‐term observational studies of forest dynamics among various elevations are indispensable to predict the effects of climatic change on vegetation distribution.  相似文献

Climate warming and biotic stressors are expected to reduce tree radial growth and performance at short and long time scales. However, the impacts of different biotic stressors on performance throughout a tree’s life are largely understudied. Here we assessed the effects of a past nun moth (Lymantria dispar) outbreak and related defoliation on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees, which were later severely infested by the hemiparasite mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. austriacum). We compared the responses of trees severely infested or not infested by mistletoe in a wet vs. a dry site to quantify the relative importance of biotic stressors under different climate conditions. We used dendrochronology to quantify: long- and short-term changes in radial growth (resilience), differences in wood anatomy during the outbreak, and recent changes in intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi). The outbreak caused a sharp growth reduction in 1953 (50% decrease in basal area increment –BAI) and the formation of tracheids of small transversal lumen diameter (33% decrease in diameter). Recent mistletoe infestation caused a difference in growth between infested and non-infested trees lasting 34 and 21 years in the wet and dry sites, respectively. Growth (BAI) decreased more steeply in severely infested than in non-infested trees, the post-drought resilience decreased in severely infested trees, and the WUEi increased, particularly in the dry site. The BAI of severely infested trees was more negatively impacted by warm and dry conditions during the growing season than in non-infested trees, particularly in the dry site. Tree rings recorded historical effects of biotic stressors (L. monacha outbreak), which may constrain responses to recent stressors (mistletoe).  相似文献

Aim To understand how tree growth response to regional drought and temperature varies between tree species, elevations and forest types in a mountain landscape. Location Twenty‐one sites on an elevation gradient of 1500 m on the San Francisco Peaks, northern Arizona, USA. Methods Tree‐ring data for the years 1950–2000 for eight tree species (Abies lasiocarpa var. arizonica (Merriam) Lemm., Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., Pinus aristata Engelm., Pinus edulis Engelm., Pinus flexilis James, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco and Quercus gambelii Nutt.) were used to compare sensitivity of radial growth to regional drought and temperature among co‐occurring species at the same site, and between sites that differed in elevation and species composition. Results For Picea engelmannii, Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii, trees in drier, low‐elevation stands generally had greater sensitivity of radial growth to regional drought than trees of the same species in wetter, high‐elevation stands. Species low in their elevational range had greater drought sensitivity than co‐occurring species high in their elevational range at the pinyon‐juniper/ponderosa pine forest ecotone, ponderosa pine/mixed conifer forest ecotone and high‐elevation invaded meadows, but not at the mixed conifer/subalpine forest ecotone. Sensitivity of radial growth to regional drought was greater at drier, low‐elevation compared with wetter, high‐elevation forests. Yearly growth was positively correlated with measures of regional water availability at all sites, except high‐elevation invaded meadows where growth was weakly correlated with all climatic factors. Yearly growth in high‐elevation forests up to 3300 m a.s.l. was more strongly correlated with water availability than temperature. Main conclusions Severe regional drought reduced growth of all dominant tree species over a gradient of precipitation and temperature represented by a 1500‐m change in elevation, but response to drought varied between species and stands. Growth was reduced the most in drier, low‐elevation forests and in species growing low in their elevational range in ecotones, and the least for trees that had recently invaded high‐elevation meadows. Constraints on tree growth from drought and high temperature are important for high‐elevation subalpine forests located near the southern‐most range of the dominant species.  相似文献

Reducing forest stand density through silvicultural thinning has demonstrated potential to mitigate drought impacts on growth; however, less has been studied on how changes in stand structure created by different thinning methods influence forest growth responses to drought. This research examined the growth responses to drought of natural-origin red pine in a long-term study contrasting thinning methods. Dendrochronological methods were used to examine growth responses during several drought events among stands where different thinning methods have been applied since 1950. Growth responses to drought were expressed as resistance (maintaining growth during drought), and resilience (regaining pre-drought growth). Results indicate that periodic thinning from above, which resulted in smaller diameters, has the potential to moderate drought-induced growth reductions. Larger tree diameters negatively influenced tree-level resistance and resilience across all treatments; however, the proportion of dominant trees in a stand had contrasting effects on stand-level drought responses. Stands thinned from above exhibited more complex vertical structure and increased stand-level resistance and resilience to drought-induced growth declines because competition is more stratified among smaller diameter trees. Opposite trends were observed in stands thinned from below, where the larger diameters and monolayered structure create greater competition among trees of similar size and crown position. The results of this study highlight the utility in managing for greater structural diversity to mitigate the negative effects of drought in red pine forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Water deficiency is the primary limiting factor for tree growth in arid and semi-arid areas. Droughts associated with rising temperatures have increased in severity and frequency globally over the past few decades, making the trees in the drought-prone sites first be affected by water shortages. However, our understanding of tree growth status in these areas, and of their response to drought, is currently insufficient; especially in the context of global warming. Here, we studied 94 Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) and 86 spruce (Picea crassifolia) trees from different altitudes [2,100–2400 m above sea level (a.s.l.)] distributed at the desert margins of Northwestern China to explore tree growth and drought response from multiple perspectives using dendroecological approaches. Significant growth decline, across all tree species and altitudes, was detected in response to an interdecadal trend towards a drier climate. Moreover, the extent of tree growth decline, the proportion of affected trees, and the degree of moisture dependence have all tended to increase in each sample site, most likely due to enhanced drought severity and duration in recent decades. The more sensitive and susceptible trees were found at lower elevations (drier sites) and may signify a higher vulnerability to heating-induced drought stress. Tree resistance to drought showed strong negative correlation with drought severity across all sample sites. However, the connection between post-drought tree resilience and drought intensity is weak, perhaps because the samples were all collected from living trees, while those that had died were not sampled. The priority for future work should be to combine surviving and dead trees simultaneously, thus achieving a more representative view of tree resilience to drought; this will improve our knowledge of forest dynamics and even ecosystem succession in these vulnerable and sensitive environments.  相似文献

Our study analyzes the growth response (release or suppression) of Norway spruce trees growing along a landslide zone in eastern Czech Republic. A total of one hundred and eighty-six increment cores were extracted from Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) individuals, which were affected by two different disturbances, the Girová landslide in May 2010 and an anthropogenic cut-off in the neighborhood of the landslide later the same year. Growth changes were analysed in three zones that were defined according to the type of effect the disturbance had on the surrounding vegetation. The aims of our study are to (i) detect growth changes in trees that survived the disturbances in 2010, (ii) evaluate the delay time of the growth reaction to the disturbances, (iii) compare how growth changes differed in response to the two different disturbance types (natural landslide vs. anthropogenic harvesting and deforestation), and (iv) investigate spatio-temporal differences in the growth changes. Our results indicate that tree growth changed in response to the altered environmental conditions following the 2010 disturbances. The changes vary depending on the intensity of the disturbance and its effect on the forest stand. Trees in Zone 1 responded with a slight growth release (14.6 % of responding trees), which was strongest after 2013. However, growth suppression (85.4 %) was the dominant reaction in Zone 1; with the majority of trees showing growth suppression in 2014, four years after the events. The strongest and most abrupt growth release (66.1 %) occurred in Zone 2 in 2011, after a one-year delay. Since 2010, we have observed a trend of growth suppression (33.9 %) in this zone. In Zone 3, following a one-year delay, growth release has occurred gradually in about a third of the trees (37.0 %). The majority of trees in this zone have responded with growth suppression (63.0 %) in 2010 and with a three-year delay after 2013. We also found differences in how tree growth responds to anthropogenic and landslide disturbances, as well as spatio-temporal differences related to the extent of post-disturbance changes.  相似文献

In this study, we present the results of a dendroclimatological investigation of three coniferous tree species, Larix principis-rupprechtii, Picea meyeri and Pinus tabulaeformis, growing along an altitudinal gradient at the Lüliang Mountains in Northern China. Totally five tree-ring width chronologies were developed to explore the climate-growth responses of these tree species. No obviously regular trend associated with the increase of elevation was found by comparing the statistical characteristics of the chronologies. Correlation analysis indicated that the chronologies from lowerest to middle-high sites (SZ, BWD, BDGL and BDGP, respectively) were highly correlated, and different species from the same site showed the highest correlation. Growth–climate analysis indicated that the chronology of Larix principis-rupprechti at the uppermost site near the tree line (XWS) did not exhibit a significant response to the seasonal climatic factors, whereas the other four lower chronologies were consistently and significantly influenced by both the mean temperature from May to July and the total precipitation from March to June, regardless of tree species and elevation. The similarity of the tree growth–climate relationships of different species growing at different elevations (except that from the tree line) suggests that the trees in this region can provide common regional climate information, and combinations of multiple species (RC) are more successful in reconstructing the climate data than single species. The results of this research are very crucial for the future forest management and dendroclimatological sampling strategy in the arid to semi-arid area of northern China.  相似文献

Climate transition zone is a sensitive area of climate change and ecological transition where forests are vulnerable to climate extremes. Extreme droughts are increasing in frequency and magnitude under climate change, resulting in structure and function changes of forest ecosystems. Here, to analyze climate-growth relationships and quantify tree resilience to extreme droughts, we developed six tree-ring-width chronologies from P. tabulaeformis and P. massoniana sampling sites in Mt. Jigong region, Central China. The results indicated that all chronologies from the two species had good consistency, precipitation in current April and mean temperature in current August or mean minimum temperature from current August to October were the main limiting factors of the two tree species growth, but the responses of P. massoniana ring-width to climatic factors was more complex than that of P. tabulaeformis. The results also showed that tree growth of 1999–2005 was the lowest growing period during 1979–2018, and P. massoniana grew better than P. tabulaeformis before 2005 and vice versa after 2005. Comparing low growth years of trees, we identified to study tree growth resilience. The calculations from 1988, 1999–2005 and 2011 drought years indicated that P. tabulaeformis had more increased resilience to extreme droughts than that of P. massoniana, and the two species had stronger ecological recovery and resilience under global warming and non-extreme drought conditions in the recent 40 years. These results have implications for predicting tree resilience and identifying tree species in heterogeneous forest landscapes vulnerable to future climate change in climatic transition zone.  相似文献

The proportion of planted forests in the Mediterranean Basin is one of the largest in the world. These plantations are dominated by pine species and present a series of characteristics such as low elevation, high competition or small tree size that make them more vulnerable to droughts. However, quantitative assessments of their post-drought growth resilience in accordance with species, site factors and tree characteristics are lacking. In this study we sampled 164 trees at four forest sites located in the drought-prone Sierra Nevada, southeastern Spain. We compared growth responsiveness to drought in rear-edge planted vs. relic natural Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and coexisting Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) stands. Our objective was to characterize and compare the different growth responses to drought between species and sites and the effect of the main physiographic factors (altitude, aspect, and slope) on these responses since the influence of these factors on post-drought resistance and resilience has received little attention to date. Our results reveal that the planted pine sites with the lowest mean growth rates displayed greater resistance during drought, and that higher altitude was associated with improved resistance and/or resilience for all species and sites. Natural pine and Pyrenean oak stands were better adapted to the dry climatic conditions of the Mediterranean region where the study was undertaken, displaying greater resistance and/or resilience and lower influence of drought on growth in comparison to stands of planted pines. These results suggest that promoting the conservation of high-elevation pine plantations and enhancing the regeneration of natural pine and oak may improve the resistance and resilience of these drought-prone forest ecosystems.

Wildfires are natural and ubiquitous disturbances in boreal forests. Assessing their impacts on tree growth and resilience are particularly important to recognize the adaptation strategies of fire-tolerant species and forest succession in fire conditions. To date, the growth resilience of fire-tolerant species in boreal forests remains largely unquantified, and the drivers of resilience are poorly understood. Here, we measured the tree-ring widths of 99 fire-scarred trees from three sites in natural Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii) forests. Three moderate-severity fire events in years 1987, 1990, and 2000 occurring at three sites were detected from the records of local forestry bureau. Based on tree-ring width data, we calculated resilience components (i.e., resistance, recovery, resilience and relative resilience) to quantify the responses of growth resilience in the larch trees to fires and analyzed their drivers at three sites. Results indicated that fires significantly reduced the tree growth. With the increasing tree age, these reductions were more pronounced. As for resilience components, our study showed a limited resistance but high recovery of tree growth against fires, and resistance tended to increase northwards but recovery showed the opposite, suggesting a growth-survival tradeoff was exhibited in Dahurian larch trees. With an increasing tree age, regional resistance and resilience showed a decreasing trend, whereas recovery and relative resilience showed an increasing trend. Resilience components were mainly affected by the climatic factors in spring. An increase in moisture availability enhanced resistance, a reduction in diurnal temperature range enhanced recovery, and an increase in mean temperature enhanced resilience and relative resilience. This study reveals that Dahurian larch could be even less favorable when faced with moderate or severe fire events, but a high capacity of recovery enables this species to adapt to the fire-prone condition. Moreover, this work highlights that the resilience of tree growth should be considered to understand tree behaviors and survival strategies of boreal forests following fires across fire-prone regions under future climate warming.  相似文献

Dendrochronology is a valuable tool to understanding climate-growth and growth-age relationships of native tree species from tropical forests. The information obtained from growth rings can elucidate climate responses of tree-growth under the ongoing environmental changes and support the development of sustainable forest management strategies based on species and site conditions. The Cerrado, which is a vast tropical savannah ecoregion of Brazil, has precipitation seasonality capable of inducing the formation of annual tree rings in moisture sensitive woody species. Hymenaea stigonocarpa is the typical tree species in the Cerrado with proven annual tree rings. It is an important commercial species that has been massively exploited for timber causing the considerable reduction of its natural populations. This study provides information about tree age and growth trajectories as well as climatic-growth signals of H. stigonocarpa in southeastern Brazil. We sampled 13 trees for tree-ring analysis. Tree-ring measurement and analysis were conducted using standard dendrochronological techniques. Sampled trees revealed the young successional stage of the stand, with ages varying from 20 to 35 years old. Nine out of 13 trees were used to build the standard chronology (1981 to 2013) that was positively correlated with precipitation at the end of the growing season (March-April). The chronology was able to capture SST anomalies patterns related to the South American Monsoon System. Growth modeling indicated that minimum logging diameter of 10.4cm is achieved at 24 years of age. The results reported here add valuable contribution to the discussion of sustainable management strategies for Cerrado ecoregion species.  相似文献

Knowledge on variations in stomata is useful in reflecting leaf physiological characteristics of CO2 uptake and water transpiration, and predicting the responses of plants to future climate change. Stomatal density and number of stomatal rows (current-year, 1- and 2-year-old needles) in relation to tree age (ranging from 25 to 320 years old), elevation (ranging from 738 to 1,380 m a.s.l.), and sun exposure (sun and shade exposure) were investigated in Pinus koraiensis trees. Stomatal density and number of stomatal rows in relation to tree age and elevation showed a humped curve with the maximum values at intermediate levels of tree age (210 years old) and elevation (1,050 m a.s.l.), respectively. Needle age but not sun exposure significantly affected the stomatal density across tree ages and elevations. Our results suggest that variations in stomatal density of Pinus koraiensis needles are related to ontogenetic growth and environmental factors.  相似文献

Trees do not respond to climatic conditions uniformly, but instead show individualistic growth responses. The extent of and causes behind this within-stand variability represents significant uncertainty in predictions of how forests will respond to future climate change. We analyzed patterns of individualistic tree growth within two types of conifer stands of Central Europe – high-elevation Picea abies and low-elevation Pinus sylvestris forests. We quantified the relative effect of age, size, and topographic conditions on variability in growth patterns and climate-growth responses using principal component analysis and linear models, considering both year-to-year and decadal growth variability. Our results show that Picea abies stands with dominant temperature limitation exhibit greater growth coherency than Pinus sylvestris stands characterized by drought-limited growth. Growth variability and individual climate-growth responses in both forest types were mainly driven by tree size and age, while the effect of topographic conditions was less important. The effect of size and age variables was dominant considering decadal growth trends, whereas intermediate importance of topographic variables was observed for high-frequency growth variability and climate-growth responses. Our results highlight that between-tree variability in climatic signal and growth trends also reflects the specific distribution of the age/size and topographic parameters within the stand. We suggest careful selection of datasets used for large-scale assessments of growth trends and climate-growth responses which should consider the age and size representation of sampled trees.

A better understanding of growth-climate responses of high-elevation tree species across their distribution range is essential to devise an appropriate forest management and conservation strategies against adverse impacts of climate change. The present study evaluates how radial growth of Himalayan fir (Abies spectabilis D. Don) and its relation to climate varies with elevation in the Manaslu Mountain range in the central Himalaya. We developed tree-ring width chronologies of Himalayan fir from three elevational belts at the species’upper distribution limit (3750−3900 m), in the middle range (3500−3600 m), and at the lower distribution limit (3200−3300 m), and analyzed their associations with climatic factors. Tree growth of Himalayan fir varied synchronously across elevational belts, with recent growth increases observed at all elevations. Across the elevation gradient, radial growth correlated positively (negatively) with temperature (precipitation and standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index, SPEI-03) during the summer (July to September) season. However, the importance of summer (July to September) temperatures on radial growth decreased with elevation, whereas correlations with winter (previous November to current January) temperatures increased. Correlations with spring precipitation and SPEI-03 changed from positive to negative from low to high elevations. Moving correlation analysis revealed a persistent response of tree growth to May and August temperatures. However, growth response to spring moisture availability has strongly increased in recent decades, indicating that intensified spring drought may reduce growth rates of Himalayan fir at lower elevations. Under sufficient moisture conditions, increasing summer temperature might be beneficial for fir trees growing at all elevations, while trees growing at the upper treeline will take additional benefit from winter warming.  相似文献

Two elevation-related chemotypes of red oak (Quercus rubra L.) occur in the southern Appalachians. Studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of genetic and environmental factors on these flavonoid profiles. Low elevation trees which contain only kaempferol and quercetin glycosides were used for assessment of within-tree variation. Within a single tree, sun, shade and branch position have only minor quantitative effects on the flavonoid array. To assess the effect of growing locality on flavonoid profiles we collected red oak acorns from eight locations spanning 1455 m elevation in NC and VA, and divided them equally between nursery plots at 75 and 1140 m in elevation. After five years, leaves of each tree were collected and analysed for flavonoid content and quantity. Myricetin-rich high elevation and quercetin-rich low elevation individuals retain their distinctive profiles regardless of planting size. Some quantitative intrapopulational variation in flavonoid constituents exists between high and low elevation grown trees, but is slight and primarily restricted to minor components. Populations from middle elevations are more heterogeneous than those from either high or low elevations. Some of these trees have lower quantities of myricetin glycosides than high elevation trees while others lack them entirely.  相似文献
