BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Species of the Nepenthaceae family are under-represented in studies of leaf traits and the consequent view of mineral nutrition and limitation in carnivorous plants. This study is aimed to complement existing data on leaf traits of carnivorous plants. METHODS: Physico-chemical properties, including construction costs (CC), of the assimilatory organs (leaf and pitcher) of a guild of lowland Nepenthes species inhabiting heath and/or peat swamp forests of Brunei, Northern Borneo were determined. KEY RESULTS: Stoichiometry analyses indicate that Nepenthes species are nitrogen limited. Most traits vary appreciably across species, but greater variations exist between the assimilatory organs. Organ mass per unit area, dry matter tissue concentration (density), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon, heat of combustion (H(c)) and CC values were higher in the leaf relative to the pitcher, while organ thickness, potassium (K) and ash showed the opposite trend. Cross-species correlations indicate that joint rather than individual consideration of the leaf and the pitcher give better predictive relationships between variables, signalling tight coupling and functional interdependence of the two assimilatory organs. Across species, mass-based CC did not vary with N or P, but increases significantly with tissue density, carbon and H(c), and decreases with K and ash contents. Area-based CC gave the same trends (though weaker in strength) in addition to a significant positive correlation with tissue mass per unit area. CONCLUSIONS: The lower CC value for the pitcher is in agreement with the concept of low marginal cost for carnivory relative to conventional autotrophy. The poor explanatory power of N, P or N : P ratio with CC suggests that factors other than production of expensive photosynthetic machinery (which calls for a high N input), including concentrations of lignin, wax/lipids or osmoregulatory ions like K(+), may give a better explanation of the CC variation across Nepenthes species.  相似文献

The construction cost of fine roots was studied in 23 woody species and two grassland communities, growing under natural conditions in southern Spain. Calculation of the energy (glucose) required for their synthesis was based on the quantification of chemical components present in tissues. Despite considerable differences in the chemical composition of the three life forms studied (trees, shrubs and herbaceous), detected differences in construction cost were non‐significant (mean value: 1·64 ± 0·13 g glucose g?1). However, shrubs and herbaceous plants growing in more fertile habitats expended significantly less energy on root synthesis (1·58 ± 0·06 and 1·41 ± 0·05 g glucose g?1, respectively) than those growing in less fertile areas (1·80 ± 0·06 and 1·57 ± 0·1 g glucose g?1, respectively), because they contained smaller amounts of either waxes (shrubs) or lignins (herbaceous), both expensive to synthesize, and, proportionately, more cellulose; which is inexpensive to synthesize. Deciduous and evergreen tree species also differed mainly with regard to wax and cellulose contents, giving rise to a significantly higher construction cost in evergreens (1·57 ± 0·07 g glucose g?1 versus 1·78 ± 0·02 g glucose g?1). The differences observed in construction cost appeared to be due more to habitat‐induced differences in chemical composition than to any intrinsic difference between the species studied.  相似文献

在海拔高度3200m的中国科学院海北高寒草甸生态系统定位站选取羊茅 Festucaovina 、早熟禾 Poaannua 、艹洽草 Koeoeriacristata 以及莎草科的矮嵩草 Kobresiahumilis 、黑褐苔草 Carexalrofusca 5种青藏高原重要牧草品种,分别测定羊茅、早熟禾、艹洽草、矮嵩草茎、矮嵩草叶、黑褐苔草茎和黑褐苔草叶的木质素含量,并采用二级离体培养法测定其体外消化率,比较不同牧草间木质素含量及消化率差异.1999和2000年两年的实验结果表明,牧草木质素含量与其体外消化率之间为极显著负相关 P<0.01 ;就同种牧草不同器官而言,牧草茎的木质素含量明显高于叶,其降解率较低;3种禾本科牧草及2种莎草科牧草不同牧草品种间木质素含量和体外消化率差异不显著.  相似文献

To examine the predictability of leaf physiology and biochemistry from light gradients within canopies, we measured photosynthetic light-response curves, leaf mass per area (LMA) and concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll at 15–20 positions within canopies of three conifer species with increasing shade tolerance, ponderosa pine [Pinus ponderosa (Laws.)], Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco], and western hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.]. Adjacent to each sampling position, we continuously monitored photosynthetically active photon flux density (PPFD) over a 5-week period using quantum sensors. From these measurements we calculated FPAR: integrated PPFD at each sampling point as a fraction of full sun. From the shadiest to the brightest canopy positions, LMA increased by about 50% in ponderosa pine and 100% in western hemlock; Douglas fir was intermediate. Canopy-average LMA increased with decreasing shade tolerance. Most foliage properties showed more variability within and between canopies when expressed on a leaf area basis than on a leaf mass basis, although the reverse was true for chlorophyll. Where foliage biochemistry or physiology was correlated with FPAR, the relationships were non-linear, tending to reach a plateau at about 50% of full sunlight. Slopes of response functions relating physiology and biochemistry to ln(FPAR) were not significantly different among species except for the light compensation point, which did not vary in response to light in ponderosa pine, but did in the other two species. We used the physiological measurements for Douglas fir in a model to simulate canopy photosynthetic potential (daily net carbon gain limited only by PPFD) and tested the hypothesis that allocation of carbon and nitrogen is optimized relative to PPFD gradients. Simulated photosynthetic potential for the whole canopy was slightly higher (<10%) using the measured allocation of C and N within the canopy compared with no stratification (i.e., all foliage identical). However, there was no evidence that the actual allocation pattern was optimized on the basis of PPFD gradients alone; simulated net carbon assimilation increased still further when even more N and C were allocated to high-light environments at the canopy top. We analyzed low molecular mass phenolics, lignin content and both soluble and cell wall bound peroxidase activity in the needles of three Picea omorika (Pancic) Purkyne lines grown in the generative seed orchard. The highest values of the total phenol content as well as of catechine, caffeic acid, coniferyl alcohol, isoferulic acid and lignin concentration were detected in B5 line (“semidichotomy” line). The soluble guaiacol peroxidase activity was the highest in A3 line (line “borealis”). The highest activity of cell wall bound peroxidases was measured in B5 line, and it was in correlation with lignin content.  相似文献

Root and rhizome of fourHelleborus species:H. viridis, H. odorus, H. niger, H. foetidus were examined throughout a two-year period in order to determine the variation of lipid content and fatty acid composition during the ontogenetic cycle. In the deciduous geophytesH. viridis andH. odorus subsp.laxus the lipid content reaches its maximum during the quiescent phase, whereas in the evergreen geophyteH. niger the lipid content is highest during the main growth period. In the chamaephyteH. foetidus lipid content is always very low and it does not show variation throughout the year. In all species the fatty acids detected in the neutral fraction are myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acid. Palmitic and linoleic acid are always present in larger quantities. The pattern of the relative content of saturated/unsaturated fatty acids seems to be linked to the life form of these species.  相似文献

Nepenthes pitcher plants display interspecific diversity in pitcher form and diets. This species‐rich genus might be a conspicuous candidate for an adaptive radiation. However, the pitcher traits of different species have never been quantified in a comparative study, nor have their possible adaptations to the resources they exploit been tested. In this study, we compare the pitcher features and prey composition of the seven Nepenthes taxa that grow in the heath forest of Brunei (Borneo) and investigate whether these species display different trapping syndromes that target different prey. The Nepenthes species are shown to display species‐specific combinations of pitcher shapes, volumes, rewards, attraction and capture traits, and different degrees of ontogenetic pitcher dimorphism. The prey spectra also differ among plant species and between ontogenetic morphotypes in their combinations of ants, flying insects, termites, and noninsect guilds. According to a discriminant analysis, the Nepenthes species collected at the same site differ significantly in prey abundance and composition at the level of order, showing niche segregation but with varying degrees of niche overlap according to pairwise species comparisons. Weakly carnivorous species are first characterized by an absence of attractive traits. Generalist carnivorous species have a sweet odor, a wide pitcher aperture, and an acidic pitcher fluid. Guild specializations are explained by different combinations of morpho‐functional traits. Ant captures increase with extrafloral nectar, fluid acidity, and slippery waxy walls. Termite captures increase with narrowness of pitchers, presence of a rim of edible trichomes, and symbiotic association with ants. The abundance of flying insects is primarily correlated with pitcher conicity, pitcher aperture diameter, and odor presence. Such species‐specific syndromes favoring resource partitioning may result from local character displacement by competition and/or previous adaptations to geographically distinct environments.  相似文献

Pseudomonas sp. N31 was isolated from soil using 3-nitrophenol and succinate as sole source of nitrogen and carbon respectively. The strain expresses a nitrophenol oxygenase and can use either 2-nitrophenol or 4-chloro-2-nitrophenol as a source of nitrogen, eliminating nitrite, and accumulating catechol and 4-chlorocatechol, respectively. The catechols were not degraded further. Strains which are able to utilize 4-chloro-2-nitrophenol as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen were constructed by transfer of the haloaromatic degrading sequences from either Pseudomonas sp. B13 or Alcaligenes eutrophus JMP134 (pJP4) to strain N31. Transconjugant strains constructed using JMP134 as the donor strain grew on 3-chlorobenzoate but not on 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate. This was due to the non-induction of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate monooxygenase and 2,4-dichlorophenol hydroxylase. Transfer of the plasmid from the 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate negative transconjugant strains to a cured strain of JMP134 resulted in strains which also had the same phenotype. This indicates that a mutation has occurred in pJP4 to prevent the expression of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate monooxygenase and 2,4-dichlorophenol hydroxylase.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the As phytoextraction potential of four tree species: Acer pseudoplatanus L., Betula pendula Roth., Quercus robur L., and Ulmus laevis Pall. in light of their prospective use in the phytoremediation of arsenate [As(V)] contaminated soils. The content of nutritional elements: B, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si, P, and S was also analyzed. The trees were grown for 1?month in hydroponic cultures (Knop medium) supplemented with As(V), (1?mM). The results showed that the highest As accumulation efficiency was characterized by B. pendula (BCF = 0.87) and Q. robur (BCF = 0.5). Betula pendula accumulated about 80% of As in its roots (TF = 0.22) whereas Q. robur accumulated more than 60% of As in its shoots (TF = 1.60). The other tree species accumulated significantly lower amounts of As, more than 60% of which collected in their shoots. As(V) phytoextraction led to a significantly lower level of P and S in the roots of all tested tree species. Betula pendula seems promising for phytostabilisation and Q. robur for phytoextraction of As(V) from contaminated soils. The obtained results confirm the accumulation and translocation of As(V), as well as the acquisition of nutritional elements by the selected tree species.  相似文献

The paper is focused on the analysis of the behaviour of biocomposites (biodegradable composites) which are reinforced with different fillers fractions, with varying lignin contents. These materials have been carried-out by extrusion and injection moulding. The matrix, an aromatic copolyester (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate), is biodegradable. The lignocellulose fillers are a by-product of an industrial fractionation process of wheat straw. From the raw agro-material and by lignin extractions, various fillers fractions have been obtained by varying the fractionation conditions, both on the liquid media (aqueous or organic) and on the temperature. The fillers lignin contents vary from 30 to 14 wt% with a resultant increase of the cellulose content. We have analysed the impact of the different extraction conditions on the fillers surface and size distribution, and also on the final thermal and mechanical properties of the biocomposites. These materials present significant differences of behaviour which can fulfil some requirements for applications, such as non-food packaging or other short-lived applications (agriculture, sport …) where long-lasting polymers are not entirely adequate.  相似文献

叶建成消耗(或叶构建消耗)是指构建单位质量(面积)叶片所需要的葡萄糖当量,是植物碳收获过程中必要的成本投资.反映植物在叶片水平上的能量和碳分配策略。基于热值、灰份含量、叶氮含量和比叶面积的测定,估算了江西九连山常绿阔叶林16个主要树种的叶建成消耗,分析比较了不同树种、不同叶寿命、比叶面积和冠层不同部位对叶建成消耗的影响。结果表明,热值组分的变化对单位质量叶建成消耗的影响最大;树种间单位质量叶建成消耗的差异不大(变化率仅3%~6%),但其单位面积叶建成消耗则存在显著差异(变化率达27%~28%);热值和单位质量叶建成消耗与比叶面积密切相关,而比叶面积随取样高度呈显著的降低趋势,最终导致热值及单位质量和单位面积的叶建成消耗均随取样高度呈显著的增加趋势。研究结果指出:(1)较高的叶建成消耗是由于植物叶片内含有较高能量投资的化学组分;(2)叶建成消耗和比叶面积随取样高度的变化综合反映了植物对光照和水分资源垂直梯度变化的可塑性适应。  相似文献

Tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes) catch animals in their specialized cup-shaped leaves, digest the prey by secreting enzymes, and actively take up the resulting compounds. The benefit of this behaviour is the ability to grow and compete in nutrient-poor habitats. Our present in vitro study shows that not only the nitrogen of alanine fed to the carnivorous organs is used by the plant but that in addition intact C2-units derived from C-2 and C-3 of stable isotope labelled L-alanine serve as building blocks, here exemplarily for the synthesis of the secondary metabolite plumbagin, a potent allelochemical. This result adds a new facet to the benefit of carnivory for plants. The availability of plumbagin by a de novo synthesis probably enhances the plants' fitness in their defence against phytophagous and pathogenic organisms. A missing specific uptake or CoA activation mechanism might be the reason that acetate fed to the pitchers was not incorporated into the naphthoquinone plumbagin. The dihydronaphthoquinone glucosides rossoliside and plumbaside A, here isolated for the first time from Nepenthes, by contrast, showed no incorporation after feeding of any of the two precursors, suggesting these compounds to be storage forms with probably very low turnover rates.  相似文献

In forest ecosystems, the silicon (Si) mass-balance at the watershed scale can be strongly influenced by readily soluble Si components, such as dissolved Si, adsorbed Si, amorphous silica (biogenic and pedogenic opal) and short-range ordered aluminosilicates. The aim of the present study is to (a) identify the components of the readily soluble Si pool in the Cambisol found below three tree species, under homogeneous soil and climate conditions, and (b) study the impact of Si recycling by tree species on the Si pools. We therefore measured the concentrations of Si extracted by Na2CO3 (Sialk), oxalate (Siox) and CaCl2. The Sialk concentration decreased from the humus layer to 15 cm depth and then slightly increased until a depth of 75 cm. In the humus layer, the Sialk concentration consisted mainly of phytoliths and differed significantly between tree species (expressed as mg SiO2 g-1): Douglas fir (14.5?±?0.65) > European beech (11.8?±?0.30) > Black pine (5.4?±?0.31). Below 7.5 cm, the Sialk content did not differ significantly between tree species, and the Siox content, increasing significantly, was mainly comprised of Si adsorbed onto amorphous Fe oxides. These results suggest that (a) tree species can impact the readily soluble Si content in the topsoil, through different rates of Si uptake and phytolith restitution by the vegetation, and (b) the soil’s readily soluble Si pool is mainly comprised of phytoliths and adsorbed Si. Here, the readily soluble Si pool is thus controlled by both the iron dynamics and Si biocycling.  相似文献

A new species of Nepenthes L., N. attenboroughii (Nepenthaceae), from Palawan Island in the Philippines, is described and illustrated. It is restricted to rocky, ultramafic soils that comprise the summit region of Mount Victoria, Municipality of Narra, where it occurs in isolation from other members of the genus. On the basis of the morphological features, this new taxon appears to be related to both N. mira Jebb & Cheek of Palawan and N. rajah Hook.f. of Borneo. Its substantial size places it among the largest of known pitcher plants.
