The objective was to determine the concentration of total selenium (Se) and the proportion of total Se comprised as selenomethionine (SeMet) and selenocysteine (SeCys) in post mortem tissues of lambs in the 6 weeks period following the withdrawal of a diet containing high-dose selenised yeast (HSY), derived from a specific strain of Saccharomyces cerevisae CNCM (Collection Nationale de Culture de Micro-organism) I-3060. Thirty Texel × Suffolk lambs used in this study had previously received diets (91 days) containing either HSY (6.30 mg Se per kg dry matter (DM)) or an unsupplemented control (C; 0.13 mg Se per kg DM). Following the period of supplementation, all lambs were then offered a complete pelleted diet, without additional Se (0.15 mg Se per kg DM), for 42 days. At enrolment and 21 and 42 days later, five lambs from each treatment were blood sampled, euthanased and samples of heart, liver, kidney and skeletal muscle (longissimus dorsi and psoas major) tissue were retained. Total Se concentration in whole blood and tissues was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in HSY lambs at all time points that had previously received long-term exposure to high dietary concentrations of SY. The distribution of total Se and the proportions of total Se comprised as SeMet and SeCys differed between tissues, treatment and time points. Total Se was greatest in HSY liver and kidney (22.64 and 18.96 mg Se per kg DM, respectively) and SeCys comprised the greatest proportion of total Se. Conversely, cardiac and skeletal muscle (longissimus dorsi and psoas major) tissues had lower total Se concentration (10.80, 7.02 and 7.82 mg Se per kg DM, respectively) and SeMet was the predominant selenised amino acid. Rates of Se clearance in HSY liver (307 μg Se per day) and kidney (238 μg Se per day) were higher compared with HSY cardiac tissue (120 μg Se per day) and skeletal muscle (20 μg Se per day). In conclusion, differences in Se clearance rates were different between tissue types, reflecting the relative metabolic activity of each tissue, and appear to be dependent on the proportions of total Se comprised as either SeMet or SeCys.  相似文献

Straw treated with urea was offered to lambs either freshly prepared (EN0) or after ensiling with urea for 30 days (EN30). The lambs also received 10 g dry matter (DM) of shredded, artificially dried grass per day per kg of metabolic liveweight. Ensiling straw significantly increased its intake from 32 to 41 g DM per day per kg of metabolic liveweight, and its DM digestibility from 375 to 450 g per kg.  相似文献

A study was undertaken of three cultivars of subterranean clover (cvv. Larisa, Trikkala and Goulburn), harvested at 50% flower and again after 30 days, for liveweight gain and wool growth of lambs. Live weight gain (LWG) and wool growth (WG) of lambs were significantly higher (P < 0.001) at 50% flower than from the later harvest. The LWG and WG of lambs fed three cultivars of subterranean clover ranged from 137 to 162 and 8.9 to 12.7 g day−1, respectively at 50% flower while at the later harvest, they ranged from 97 to 106 and 7.1 to 7.8 g day−1, respectively. No significant differences in the live weight gain were observed between cultivars. The higher wool growth of lambs fed cv. Trikkala at 50% flower compared with lambs fed cv. Goulburn or cv. Larisa was associated with significantly higher intake of metabolisable protein, but no difference in wool growth and metabolisable protein were observed between lambs fed cv. Goulburn and cv. Larisa diets. The relations of feed intake with degradability characteristics of dry matter and cell wall organic matter (CWOM) were investigated. The inclusion of rate of degradation of CWOM with CWOM content per se significantly improved the predictive relationship for organic matter intake (R2 = 0.55) and digestible organic matter intake (R2 = 0.65). This study has quantified strong predictive relations of live weight gain and wool growth with the intake of metabolisable protein (R2 = 0.66) for subterranean clover.  相似文献

The nutritional effects of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.) forage containing condensed tannins (CT) on growth of lambs, and carcass and meat quality were investigated. Thirty-two male Comisana lambs aged 100 ± 8 days weighing 19.0 ± 2.8 kg were fed fresh forage of sulla or CT-free annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. subsp. Wersterwoldicum) for 49 days until slaughter; in addition, each lamb was supplied with 200 g/days of concentrate. Eight lambs per diet had been previously treated with anthelmintic drugs to remove nematode parasites. Measurements of BW and feed intake, and counts of faecal nematode eggs were made. Carcass parameters were recorded after slaughter, and tissue components of the hind leg were determined. Longissimus dorsi meat was evaluated for pH, colour, thawing and cooking losses, Warner-Bratzler shear force, chemical composition and sensory properties based on triangle tests. Relative to ryegrass-fed lambs, sulla-fed lambs had significantly greater dry matter (DM) and protein intake, a more favourable feed conversion ratio, and superior growth rate, final BW at 150 days of age, carcass weight, yield and fatness. These results were attributed to the high protein and non-structural carbohydrate content of sulla, and also to the moderate CT content of sulla (16.7 and 20.3 g/kg of DM in offered and consumed sulla forage, respectively). Anthelmintic treatment did not affect lamb growth, as the level of parasitic infection (initial and final) was low. The physical, chemical and sensory properties of the lamb meat were not influenced by diet.  相似文献

Insulin-induced alterations in amino acid metabolism in the fetal lamb   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To investigate the role of insulin in modulation of fetal amino acid metabolism, insulin infusions were performed in 10 chronically-catheterized fetal lambs. Fetal insulin infusion caused a dose related fall in the arterial blood concentrations of 13 of 15 amino acids studied as well as a 15-25% decrease in total amino acid concentration. Fetal lambs exhibited a biphasic response of umbilical total amino acid uptake when compared to fetal blood insulin concentration, i.e., at achieved fetal insulin concentrations less than 100 microU/ml, umbilical uptake of 9 specific amino acids as well as summed amino acid uptake from the umbilical circulation were depressed, but at insulin concentrations of 100-350 microU/ml, amino acid uptakes were similar to or above control values. Insulin infusion also caused a drastic diminution in the rate of fetal urea excretion. These findings suggest that insulin acts in the fetus to depress amino acid catabolism, thus altering amino acid extraction and uptake. Depressed protein catabolism with or without enhanced amino acid uptake would have the theoretical effect of stimulation of net protein synthesis with a shift toward use of nonprotein substrates for energy purposes.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional quality of cattle manure silage for ruminants. In experiment 1 a silage containing 50% cattle manure, 20% cane molasses (containing 0.4% urea) mixed with water in a 1:1.5 ratio, and 30% corn stover replaced 0, 50, 75 and 100% of corn stover in isonitrogenous diets (1.92% N) containing 70 or 80% corn stover (dry matter (DM) basis) in a 4×2 factorial arrangement. Forty lambs (34.5±3.2 kg body weight (BW)) were used to measure apparent digestibility and nitrogen balance in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement (4×2) with five lambs per treatment. The cattle manure silage was also evaluated in growing Holstein heifers (212±32 kg BW) replacing 0, 25 or 37.5% of corn stover with cattle manure silage in isonitrogenous diets (2.24% N). Apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were not affected. According to these results, digestibility is not affected by the level of cattle manure silage; however, intake was depressed at the highest levels of silage in lambs. Cattle manure silage may be considered as a potential by-product to be included in heifer's diet up to 37.5%, apparently without affecting performance. Recycling cattle manure through silage for ruminants is a viable alternative. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.  相似文献

Effects of partial substitution of barley grain and soybean meal with fleabane (FB) Conyza bonariensis on growth performances and body compositions of 24 male local Awassi lambs were studied. All lambs were male with an average BW of 20.3 kg (s.d. = 2.0 kg) at the beginning of the experiment. Animals were randomly divided into four groups of six lambs each. Lambs in each group received individually their cereal–soybean-based total mixed rations with levels of FB: 0, 50, 100 and 150 g/kg dry matter (DM) diet, which replaced similar values of barley and soybean meal. All rations were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The fattening experiment lasted 9 weeks, after which all lambs were slaughtered. The composition of nutrients in the C. bonariensis were 89.6%, 15.0%, 28.0%, 30.0% and 10% for organic matter, CP, NDF, ADF and lignin, respectively. At the end of the experiment, lambs fed 100 and 150 g FB/kg DM diets gained more weight (P < 0.05) than those fed the control and 50 g FB/kg DM diets. The DM intake was lower in lambs fed the highest level of FB compared with intakes of lambs in other treatments. Diet content of FB had significant effect (P < 0.05) on weights of empty body, carcass, gut and external (hide, head and feet) among all animals. However, FB had no effects on lambs’ thoracic organs (lungs and heart) and liver. Muscle, bone, omental and mesenteric fat, subcutaneous, intermuscular, pelvic and kidney fat weights (g/kg empty BW) were not affected by FB feeding. Carcass fat was decreased (P < 0.05) by the increase of FB. Total body fat was the same in all animals of the experiment.  相似文献

6 conventional and 5 germfree male lambs were fed ad libitum a UHT sterilized cow milk. Body weight and food intake were recorded. Whole feces were collected for 5 consecutive days. Growth rate reached 259 g/d for the germfree. Daily fecal excretion of dry matter and nitrogenous compounds are not found different in the two groups of animals. The influence of intestinal microflora appears on the biochemical composition of the feces. As compared to the conventional fecal proteins from germfree lambs are very high in threonine and serine and low in lysine. Moreover the difference of amino acid composition between these two groups come not only from the histidine alanine and arginine composition of bacteries; it also involves the high levels of threonine serine cystine and tyrosine of the endogenous digestive proteins.  相似文献

Two groups of 1-month-old pre-ruminant lambs of similar mean liveweights were fed identical liquid milk-replacer diets except that the zinc contents were either 5 micrograms (deficient diet) or 32 micrograms per gram of dry matter (control diet). These diets were fed for 4 weeks, after which all the lambs received the control diet for 2 weeks. In the lambs fed the deficient diet plasma zinc concentration decreased markedly during the first 2 weeks and skin lesions developed around their mouths. Autophagic vacuoles also developed in most follicle bulbs along with a variety of defects in the wool fibres and progressive inhibition of wool growth. Food intake and liveweight increase were not significantly depressed until the third and fourth weeks of feeding the deficient diet. During this period the wool was shed from the zinc-deficient lambs as a result of the fibres being degraded and distorted within thickened outer root sheaths in the distal (upper) parts of the follicles. In addition, the epidermis of the wool-bearing skin became slightly acanthotic and hyperkeratotic, although not parakeratotic. When the deficient lambs were fed the control diet for 2 weeks, their food intake, liveweight gain and plasma zinc concentration increased to almost those of the control lambs, but their rate of wool growth was still low and the epidermis had not returned to normal. Compared with previous studies the findings of this study suggest that pre-ruminant lambs may be more susceptible to the effects of zinc deficiency than ruminant lambs.  相似文献

A study was made on protein metabolism and hormonal changes following birth in newborn lambs fed amino acids alone or in combination with lactose. Eight newborn lambs taken from their mother immediately after birth were fed hourly for 8 h, either with a solution of peptides and free amino acids obtained by mild hydrolysis of whey proteins (4 lambs; diet AP) or with the same solution + lactose (4 lambs; diet APL). L-[4,5-3H] leucine was continuously perfused into a jugular vein for 6 h when the lambs were 2 h 30 min old. Plasma glucose and insulin levels increased after birth in APL lambs whereas they decreased in the AP; these differences were significantly different. Plasma cortisol levels remained unchanged throughout the experiment. Free essential amino acid levels did not vary when lambs were older than 4.5 h; they depended on the corresponding amino acid intakes. Plasma free threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine and lysine were lower in APL than in AP lambs. The plasma leucine irreversible loss and leucine oxidation were higher in AP than in APL lambs. The plasma flux of leucine from whole body protein breakdown was lower in APL than in AP lambs inasmuch as the plasma flux of dietary leucine may be estimated by the amounts of leucine ingested in both cases. No significant difference was found for the fractional synthesis rates of tissue proteins such as liver, skin, skeletal muscle, lung, brain and whole body. These rates for skin, muscle and whole body were close to those previously measured in colostrum fed lambs. The increase in whole body protein accretion resulting from lactose feeding in combination with amino acids seemed to result from a decreased protein breakdown that could be mediated by the insulin response.  相似文献

Brief but severe asphyxia in late gestation or at the time of birth may lead to neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and is associated with long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. We undertook this study to examine the consequences of transient in utero asphyxia in late gestation fetal sheep, on the newborn lamb after birth. Surgery was undertaken at 125 days gestation for implantation of fetal catheters and placement of a silastic cuff around the umbilical cord. At 132 days gestation (0.89 term), the cuff was inflated to induce umbilical cord occlusion (UCO), or sham (control). Fetal arterial blood samples were collected for assessment of fetal wellbeing and the pregnancy continued until birth. At birth, behavioral milestones for newborn lambs were recorded over 24 h, after which the lambs were euthanased for brain collection and histopathology assessments. After birth, UCO lambs displayed significant latencies to (i) use all four legs, (ii) attain a standing position, (iii) find the udder, and (iv) successfully suckle - compared to control lambs. Brains of UCO lambs showed widespread pathologies including cell death, white matter disruption, intra-parenchymal hemorrhage and inflammation, which were not observed in full term control brains. UCO resulted in some preterm births, but comparison with age-matched preterm non-UCO control lambs showed that prematurity per se was not responsible for the behavioral delays and brain structural abnormalities resulting from the in utero asphyxia. These results demonstrate that a single, brief fetal asphyxic episode in late gestation results in significant grey and white matter disruption in the developing brain, and causes significant behavioral delay in newborn lambs. These data are consistent with clinical observations that antenatal asphyxia is causal in the development of neonatal encephalopathy and provide an experimental model to advance our understanding of neuroprotective therapies.  相似文献

The present study was designed to describe the effects of early feed restriction of Merino lambs on feed efficiency during the fattening period by examining ruminal microbiota and fermentation parameters, gastrointestinal morphology, digestibility or liver proteome. In total, 24 male Merino lambs were randomly assigned to two experimental treatments (n=12 per treatment). Lambs of the first group (ad libitum (ADL)) were kept permanently with the dams, whereas the other 12 lambs (restricted (RES)) were milk restricted. When lambs reached a live BW (LBW) of 15 kg, all the animals were offered the same complete pelleted diet (35 g dry matter/kg LBW per day) until slaughter at a LBW of 27 kg. The RES lambs showed poorer feed efficiency during the fattening period when compared with the ADL group (feed to gain ratio, 3.69 v. 3.05, P<0.001). No differences were observed in ruminal microbiota, fermentation parameters or apparent digestibility. However, the proportion of the small intestine and the length of ileal villi were reduced in the RES lambs. In total, 26 spots/proteins were identified in the liver proteomic profile, with significant differences (P<0.05) between experimental treatments, suggesting a higher catabolism of proteins and a reduction in β-oxidation of fatty acids in RES lambs when compared with the ADL animals. In conclusion, early feed restriction of Merino lambs during the suckling period promotes long-term effects on the small intestine and the proteomic profile of the liver, which may influence the metabolic use of nutrients, thus negatively affecting feed efficiency during the fattening phase.  相似文献

A study of the pathogenesis of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in lambs with observations on the contribution of gastrointestinal plasma loss. International Journal for Parasitology 3: 743–757. Increased effusion into the gut of51Cr-labelled plasma protein was observed in 20-week-old Merino lambs which showed signs of trichostrongylosis after administration of 100,000 T. colubriformis larvae. In another trial, similarly infected 12-week-old meat type crossbred lambs did not have elevated gastrointestinal plasma loss, or signs of trichostrongylosis, although they generally carried heavier worm burdens than the Merinos. Differences in breed susceptibility were considered a possible explanation. Nine-week-old Merino lambs inoculated with 85,000 T. colubriformis had increased plasma loss into the gut beginning 10–12 days after infection, coinciding with onset of inappetance, hypoproteinaemia and weight loss. Weight loss was considered largely due to reduced feed intake, but infected lambs during the period of protein effusion into the gut lost more weight, or gained less, than pair fed controls. Hypoproteinaemia was related mainly to effusion of plasma into the gut. One infected lamb, and its pair fed control, died, probably due to malnutrition. Slight anaemia, and depressed faecal dry matter per cent were observed in infected lambs.  相似文献

Twenty four Awassi lambs (mean BW 24.4 kg) were used in a two periods experiment to measure maintenance (zero growth) and growth requirements of metabolizable energy (ME). During the pre-treatment period (period 1, 3 weeks) all lambs were maintained at a constant level of feed intake (2% BW). During the treatment period (period 2, 10 weeks) the lambs were divided into four equal groups and fed different amounts (2, 3, 4 and 5% of BW). Six additional lambs of similar BW and age were killed at the beginning of the experiment to compare final empty body weight (FEBW) with initial body weight (IBW). Twelve lambs, divided into four equal groups were fed the experimental diet in the same amounts as in the growth experiment (period 2) to determine the digestibility of energy.

Energy requirement for maintenance (EM) was measured by both constant weight technique, using data collected during period 1, and regression technique by regressing ME intake on body weight gain (BWG) and empty body weight gain (EBWG). EM measured during the constant weight period (pre-treatment) and overall experimental period (pre-treatment plus treatment periods) were 0.482 and 0.466 MJ of ME per kg M0.75 per day. Predicted energy requirements for growth (Eg) calculated from equations derived during the treatment period were 0.433, 0.623, 0.782, 0.910 and 1.007 (MJ per kg M0.75 per day) for the growth rates 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 (g per day) respectively. It is concluded to be more appropriate to use the values derived during the overall experimental period for maintenance and the overall treatment period for growth as they are most applicable to production situations.  相似文献

The results of critical tests on thiabendazole given at three dose levels, 50 mg/kg, 80 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, to groups of naturally parasitized lambs are reported. While the compound appeared to be efficient at all levels, the best results were obtained at 100 mg/kg. The total percentage removals of all worms present in the gut at these three dosage levels were 79.1 per cent at the 50 mg/kg level, 96.3 per cent at the 80 mg/kg level and 99.5 per cent at the 100 mg/kg level. No activity against T. ovis, Capillaria or Moniezia was observed. Useful activity in a limited number of lambs was observed against Dictyocaulus filaria especially at the 100 mg/kg level. This drug appeared to be completely effective at the 100 mg/kg level in removing tissue-phase parasites. Inhibitory activity against developing larvae in faecal cultures obtained 24 hours after dosing was also shown. At levels up to 500 mg/kg the drug appeared relatively non-toxic. The result at 800 mg/kg was complicated by the death of the treated animal 22 days after dosing from a septicaemia. Dosage at a level of 1.6 mg/kg proved rapidly fatal to a ewe. No effect on pregnant ewes or the lambs therefrom was observed at a dose level of 160 mg/kg. The most efficient level for routine treatment of sheep under Canadian conditions of management would appear to be 100 mg/kg of body weight. This compound appears to be the best anthelmintic to have been tried to date at this laboratory against the internal parasites of sheep.  相似文献

Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

In an experiment with 40 growing Florina (Pelagonia) lambs, effects of replacing barley grain, sugar beet pulp, and alfalfa meal with fermented olive wastes (FOW) and soybean meal on productivity and meat composition was determined. In the 45-day experiment, lambs were allocated to one of the four treatments of 10 lambs (5 male and 5 female) each. Male and female lambs had an initial body weight (BW) of 19.7 ± 0.8 and 19.5 ± 0.8 kg, respectively, and were individually fed a concentrate mixture ad libitum and alfalfa hay (0.18 kg/lamb/day, dry matter (DM) basis). The FOW was added to the concentrate mixtures at inclusion levels (as fed basis) of 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/t for treatments FOW0, FOW50, FOW100, and FOW150, respectively. Male lambs grew faster (P<0.01) than female lambs, but no differences (P>0.05) occurred among FOW treatments in final BW, BW gain, DM intake, or feed conversion ratio. Males had heavier (P<0.01) fasted BW and cold carcass weight, and lower (P=0.04) carcass yield than females, but no differences in carcass components among treatments were detected. FOW can be incorporated into concentrates for growing lambs, at levels up to 150 kg/t, with no adverse effects on performance or carcass characteristics.  相似文献

Awassi is a multi-purpose sheep breed. Awassi lambs being finished are usually offered an 18% crude protein (CP) diet. The growth rate of Awassi lambs is lower than other meat breeds. Therefore, this high content of dietary CP is questionable. The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum CP level for finishing Awassi lambs. Fifty male Awassi lambs (23.0±1.2 kg) were fed five high concentrate isocaloric diets (10 lambs per diet) that contained 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18% CP in a totally mixed diets for 9 weeks using a completely randomized design. Lambs were fed twice daily, and feed offered and feed refusals recorded for each feeding. Individual lamb intakes were calculated using daily feed offered and feed refused averaged over the interval of the experiment. Digestibility estimates were measured by total fecal collection. Lambs fed diets that contained 10, 12, and 14% CP gained less weight than those fed the 16 and 18% CP diets (P<0.05). Dry matter and CP intakes increased (P<0.05) with increasing levels of dietary CP. No difference (P>0.10) was observed in feed-to-gain ratio between diets except for the diet that contained 10% CP (P<0.05) which had a lower ratio. Organic matter and CP digestibility were lowest in lambs fed the 10% CP diet. Results suggest that the optimum CP concentration is 16% and that any increase above this level will not result in any improvement in production.  相似文献

Two trials were undertaken to study the effects of cafeteria feeding systems on the feed intake, animal performance and carcass characteristics of growing lambs. Trial 1 was designed to compare conventional and cafeteria feeding systems in terms of the growth of individually reared lambs. For this assay, 26 weaned Merino lambs (15.5 ± 0.20 kg live weight) were assigned to three dietary treatment groups: (1) a control group fed barley straw and commercial concentrate under a conventional feeding system, (2) group W100S, fed soya-bean meal, whole barley grain and a mineral-vitamin supplement under a cafeteria feeding system, and (3) group W100S-T, fed as in the W100S treatment but allowing the lambs an initial training period so they could learn to identify a number of feeds. The feeding system had no significant effect ( P>0.05) on either average daily live-weight gain, carcass weight, or carcass conformation. The food conversion ratio was lower ( P < 0.05) for the cafeteria-reared animals (2.9 ± 0.16 v. 2.5 ± 0.08 g dry-matter intake per g average daily gain) than those of the control group. This might be related to the higher crude protein intake seen in the cafeteria groups (150 ± 5.6 v. 208 ± 12.5 g per animal per day; P < 0.001).In trial 2, cafeteria and conventional feeding system were compared in terms of the growth of feedlot lambs. Two hundred weaned Merino lambs (13.1 ± 0.10 kg) were divided into two experimental groups: (1) a control group, offered commercial concentrate and barley straw, and (2) a cafeteria group fed the same diet as W100ST in trial 1. The average daily gain (282 ± 5.8 and 309 ± 6.5; P < 0.01) was greater in the cafeteria than in the control group. Whereas neither carcass conformation nor fatness were affected by the feeding system, the dressing percentage was slightly higher ( P>0.001) in the conventional than in the cafeteria system lambs. The use of cafeteria systems for fattening lambs can improve the feed conversion efficiency and body growth rate over those achieved with conventional feeding systems, although the crude protein intake in these systems seems to be in excess of requirements.  相似文献

Sixteen growing castrated lambs (37.0 ± 3.31 kg) were used in two 5 × 5 and one 6 × 6 Latin squares to measure the intake and digestibility of: (1) urea—molasses-treated straw, or mixtures containing (2) 25; (3) 50; or (4) 75% dried grass; and (5) grass alone. The dry matter intake was 40, 50, 69, 84 and 90 g day?1 per kg of metabolic live weight (P<0.001), and digestibility was 470, 489, 591, 671 and 735 g kg?1, respectively, for the above treatments. The dry matter intake of lambs offered diets 2, 3 and 4 as complete diets was 47, 56 and 66 g day?1 kg of metabolic live weight, and digestibility was 513, 621 and 673 g kg?1, respectively. When the feeds were offered separately, dry matter intake was 54, 63 and 78 g day?1 per kg of metabolic live weight and digestibility was 541, 582 and 662 g kg?1, respectively. Dry matter intake for mixed diets was higher (P<0.01) than for feeds given separately.  相似文献
