Changes in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci), transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured in Plantago major L. plants grown under sufficient soil water supply or under soil water stress conditions. The plants had high PN in a wide range of soil water potential and temperature regimes. Soil water had little effect on PN under ambient CO2 concentrations, which was explained by a high carboxylation rate, but increased the dark respiration rate. Carboxylation activity at low Ci depended on RuBP regeneration, whereas at high Ci it depended on the phosphate regeneration rate. The gs and E values were low in plants under stress as compared to the controls that resulted in an increase of WUE. The results obtained show that Plantago major plants have different ways of adaptation to soil water deficit conditions.  相似文献

The role of cotyledons in seedling development and precocious flowering was studied in Duncan grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf), a cultivar that displays a high frequency of precocious flowering. Cotyledons were detached from the embryo and the embryos were germinated in vitro to form plantlets. Cotyledon detachment dramatically affected the development of Duncan seedlings. The decotyledonized plants were stunted, with small narrow leaves and thin and underdeveloped roots. Decotyledonization did not change significantly the number of leaves developed. Despite the dramatic effects of the cotyledons on seedling development, decotyledonized Duncan seedlings retained their ability to flower precociously. We conclude that although normal growth and development of Duncan grapefruit seedlings is cotyledon-dependent, the ability to flower precociously does not depend on the presence of cotyledons during in vitro germination.Abbreviations MS Murashige & Skoog's medium  相似文献

The effect of light quality (spectral quality) and photoperiod (day length) were studied on flowering of Cyclamen persicum cv. Dixie White. Light generated from light emitting diodes (LED) i.e. monochromatic blue (10 or 12 h per day), monochromatic red (10 or 12 h per day), blue plus red (10 or 12 h per day) and fluorescent lights were used in these studies. It was found that blue plus red LEDs improved flower induction in cyclamen, the number flower buds and open flowers being highest in the plants grown under blue plus red LED (10 h per day). Blue and red LEDs alone reduced the flowering response. Peduncle length (flower stalk length) and blooming period of flowers were also influenced by light qualities and photoperiod treatments. Peduncle length was 23.8 cm on plants grown under red LED (12 h per day) treatment but 14 cm on plants grown under fluorescent light. Blooming period of flowers grown under fluorescent light was 20 d, whereas it was 40 d with the plants grown under red LEDs (10 h per day). The results indicate that flowering and subsequent growth of cyclamen can be controlled by manipulating light quality and lighting period.  相似文献

Summary Callus regenerated near the base of senescing petals of flower bud explants of German Red carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) produced adventitious flowering microshoots on MS-medium containing benzylaminopurine (8.9 M) and naphthaleneacetic acid (2.7 M). When these microshoots were subcultured with some callus, additional adventitious flowering microshoots were produced from the callus. The production of adventitious flowering shoots continued for many subcultures spanning a period of more than two years. Uniconazole (6.9 M) increased the number of adventitious shoots formed by as much as two-fold but decreased shoot length by about 50%. In contrast, GA3 (2.9 M) decreased adventitious shoot formation and increased shoot length. Regardless of the growth regulator treatment, virtually all of the adventitious shoots produced flower buds. Thus, the growth regulators influenced flowering only indirectly by altering the number of adventitious shoots produced in vitro. These results demonstrate that the flowering habit of the adventitious shoots of German Red carnation is highly persistent and the flowering stimulus continues to be transmitted to the newly formed microshoots through the callus.  相似文献

Most of the resident plants within vegetation fail to leave descendants because of death without sex—i.e. sexual reproduction fails (zero fecundity), primarily because of relatively small plant size. I propose that this ‘problem of the small’ represents one of the principal driving forces of evolution by natural selection, and that the main product of this selection is ‘reproductive economy’, manifested by several plant traits that are widely distributed among angiosperms: sexual maturity at a relatively young age and small size, relatively small seed size, selfing (including through mixed mating), and of particular interest here, clonality. In non-clonal species, an offspring develops from a zygote into a single ‘rooted unit’, i.e. a distinct vascular transition point between live shoot and root tissue. Clonal species can produce an indeterminate number of these rooted unit offspring asexually, all as products of a single zygote. Clonality is a common strategy in angiosperms because it confers a potential two-fold fitness benefit—especially in relatively small species—by promoting longevity of the zygote product, while at the same time providing a fecundity supplement (through asexual multiplication of rooted units), thereby allowing offspring production economically, i.e. without requiring large adult size, and without even requiring the fertilization of ovules. The primary fitness benefit from clonality, therefore, is that the somatic product of a zygote can effectively avoid an intrinsic limitation predicted for all non-clonal plants: the trade-off between longevity and the potential rate of offspring/descendant production. These major fitness benefits of clonality are explored in considering why clonality is less common in larger species, why the largest species (trees) generally do not have the longest-lived zygote product, and in re-assessing traditional and recent views concerning the loss of sex in clonal plants, the predicted trade-off between the size and number of clonal offspring, and the predicted trade-off between sexual and asexual reproduction.  相似文献

Chronic oral anticoagulant treatment is obligatory in patients (class I) with mechanical heart valves and in patients with atrial fibrillation with CHADS2 score >1. When these patients undergo percutaneous coronary intervention with placement of a stent, there is also an indication for treatment with aspirin and clopidogrel. Unfortunately, triple therapy is known to increase the bleeding risk. For this group of patients, the bottom line is to find the ideal therapy in patients with indications for both chronic anticoagulation therapy and percutaneous intervention to prevent thromboembolic complications such as stent thrombosis without increasing the risk of bleeding. There is no broadly accepted definition of life. Suggested definitions face problems, often in theform of robust counter-examples. Here we use insights fromphilosophical investigations into language to argue thatdefining `life' currently poses a dilemma analogous to thatfaced by those hoping to define `water' before the existenceof molecular theory. In this short response to Loïc Wacquant's ‘Marginality, Ethnicity and Penality in the Neo-liberal City’, I outline two intellectual conversations that emerge from the author's work. The first develops out of the connections that the author draws between systems of criminal justice and welfare. The second grows out of the disassociation he urges us to see between the logics and trajectories of crime, on the one hand, and criminal justice on the other. Summary The nature of the steroids secreted by gonads of fish differs significantly from those of the mammals. The classical teleost steroids, oestradiol, testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone and 17,20P, have been measured in a wide variety of teleosts but do not always reflect biological activities. There is increasing evidence that teleost gonads may produce a number of non-classical steroids which may play an important role in their reproductive biology. Such products include metabolites reduced at C5 to 5 or 5, at C3 to 3 or 3, or hydroxylated at 6-, 7-, or 21. Conjugation, as either glucuronides or sulphates, may contribute either to localization of action within the gonad or to production of pheromones during the immediate pre-spawning period. Although it is often possible only to measure the steroids for which assays are readily available, it is important to recognize that there may be production of steroids that are not detected by such assays, but which nevertheless play a major role in reproductive activity. In evolutionary terms, the teleost hydroxylases probably originated in the very early fishes and show parallels with their analogues in amphibians and mammals. Gene sequencing may reveal a possible common ancestor for all vertebrate 6, 7 and 11-hydroxylases.  相似文献

Among the many points of reflection in looking back on the last 100 years in the Caucasus, a particular pride of place for some Azerbaijanis comes in the status of Baku as a cosmopolitan city: a status claimed by historians who speak of the early twentieth-century border crossings between families and trade networks across Turkey and Iran; and more recently, a status claimed by residents of the city from the Soviet 1960s and 1970s, when these diverse urban elites were at the peak of their social capital. At the same time, however, Azerbaijan had one of the lower rates of intermarriage and out-migration of all the Soviet republics. The objective of this paper is the structural and narrative reconstruction of representations of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’, held by rural residents of the Dadia Forest Reserve. Data collection involved in-depth interviews. Employing a social representations’ approach, we recovered representational elements that are expected in the case of rural belief systems, such as negative dispositions towards wolves and foxes, as well as elements of an urban adherence, such as nature’s independence. Representational elements refer to visual aspects of the countryside, which seem compatible with the figurative nucleus of the rural idyll. Concerning ‘wildlife’, residents focused on vultures, which comprise the main tourist attraction of the reserve. Scientific knowledge adds to the complexity of the narrative schema, which corresponds to the representation of ‘wildlife’. Interviewees perceived the rural landscape as an interface between the natural and the human-conditioned environment. Our study shows that interviewees make no reference to environmental conservation or quality of life issues, as it could be expected according to relatively wide definitions of the term ‘environmentalism’. Environmental messages reinforced by ecotourism development seem to be recalled primarily in terms of their compatibility with the perceived economic benefit of local people. Despite ecotourism development, representational elements that diverge from a tourist version of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’ were not pronounced within rural belief-systems. Further interventions within the study area are needed, in order to address a variety of topics under the environmental conservation discourse and raise the environmental awareness of rural residents.  相似文献
