1. Exudates from predators often elicit early maturation in Daphnia, which may protect them from predation. Diel vertical migration (DVM) is also a predator-avoidance device and affects life history traits because of the variable temperature experienced during migration. This study asks, therefore, how do these two effects interact and what are the net costs and benefits of the two defences combined? 2. Key life history features were studied in a two factorial life table experiment in a monoclonal cohort of Daphnia magna to quantify the costs of predator-induced defences. 3. The costs of DVM, associated with low temperature, yielded a 30% decrease in the intrinsic rate of population increase. This was caused by later maturation and longer egg development time, despite a higher fecundity. 4. Chemical information that predators were present resulted in smaller, more numerous offspring, but had no significant effect on size and age at first reproduction. The costs of induction were therefore associated with smaller, and thus presumably lower quality, offspring. 5. Changes in life history induced by fish exudates were independent of the shifts caused by low temperature. 6. The measure of fitness chosen to assess the costs of induced defences is important because the costs often depend on the environment.  相似文献

1. We studied the life history responses of Daphnia pulex under different biotic conditions. In a factorially designed experiment, we tested the impacts of water conditioned by the invertebrate predator Chaoborus, low and high food level (10 000 and 100 000 Scenedesmus cells ml–1), and exposure to toxic Microcystis (5000 cells ml–1) on twelve D. pulex clones originating from different habitats. Our aim was to compare the phenotypic plasticity of different clones, and to study the interactions among biotic factors.
2. Individuals cultured in Chaoborus -conditioned water started to reproduce at a larger size than individuals cultured in water not conditioned by the predators. We found interactions between food level and Chaoborus -conditioned water on age at first reproduction and total offspring number. In addition, the impact of the Chaoborus treatment on the size at first reproduction was reduced by Microcystis exposure.
3. Clonal differences were found in the degree of phenotypic plasticity of different life history traits. However, there was no obvious connection between the original habitat of the clone and the degree of plasticity.  相似文献

Experiments showed that phototactic downward swimming in Daphnia galeata x hyalina as caused by a relative increase in light intensity (stimulus) is influenced by predator kairomone and food availability. The swimming responses at four different combinations of food availability and fish kairomone were analysed. Addition of both food and kairomone led to a significant increase in percentage of animals that responded to the light stimulus, but there was no significant interaction effect. We also found that kairomone and food had significant impact on displacement velocity and on the time between start of the stimulus and onset of the response.  相似文献

Predatory larvae of the midge Chaoborus americanus induce an antipredator defense (neckteeth) in prey individuals of the cladoceran Daphnia pulex. The signal for presence of predator is a water-soluble chemical. We provide evidence that this kairomone originates in the intestinal tract of the predator. The active compound is an organic molecule of intermediate polarity which is heat stable and partially destroyed by acid and base digestion. It is stable to digestion by the general peptidase Pronase. Hydroxyl groups, but not primary amines, carbonyls or thiols are essential to activity. Low-pressure liquid chromatography on a reverse-phase silica gel (Amicon Matrex C-18) column suggests there may be more than one active component.  相似文献

  1. Numerous studies have tested the combined effect of the threat of predation by fish and low oxygen concentrations on the phenotypic plasticity of Daphnia. These studies assessed the trade‐off between minimising predation risk and the negative effects of oxygen deficiencies in the context of depth selection behaviour. We tested whether this trade‐off also affects physiological and life history traits. We expected an interactive effect between the threat of fish predation and low oxygen concentrations, such, that the net effect of both stressors would be antagonistic (lower than the sum of each of the stressors acting separately), rather than additive (or synergistic) on the majority of traits investigated, but we predicted synergistic effects on heat shock proteins (HSPs).
  2. To test this, we performed life table experiments in different oxygen concentrations (normoxia and hypoxia) and levels of predation threat (the presence and absence of fish kairomones) on HSP70 and putative HSP110, haemoglobin concentration and life history traits with small‐bodied Daphnia galeata and large‐bodied Daphnia pulex originating from waterbodies where there were different risks of fish predation.
  3. As predicted, the net effect of both stressors was antagonistic for most of the physiological and ecological variables studied. The presence of kairomones resulted in decreased body size of adults, egg size, egg size in relation to brood chamber volume, and in increased clutch size in relation to body size. These effects were weaker in hypoxia than in normoxia, which may suggest an existence of adaptive responses caused by a lower perceived risk in hypoxia than in normoxia, as the foraging abilities of fish are limited by oxygen deficiencies.
  4. The presence of kairomones hampered the production of haemoglobin in hypoxia for the clones of larger‐bodied species, which suggests the existence of a trade‐off between reduced visibility under positive‐size selective predation risk and increased efficiency of oxygen transport to body tissues. The presence of kairomones and hypoxia resulted in an increased level of putative HSP110, and the effect of kairomones was stronger in hypoxia than in normoxia. More complex results were obtained for the effect of both stressors on the level of HSP70.
  5. The findings of our study provide a new insight on the interactions between planktivorous fish and zooplankton in aquatic food webs. More specifically, these findings suggest the existence of unexplored size‐dependent eco‐physiological trade‐offs between minimising predation risk and mitigating the negative effects of oxygen deficiencies.

Life history parameters, such as age and size at maturity, neonatesize and number of eggs in the first clutch, of a clone of thehybrid Daphnia galeata x hyalina were determined at six levelsof fish kairomones. It was found that the age and size at maturitydecreased gradually with increasing kairomone level, while thenumber of eggs in the first clutch increased linearly. At thesame time, neonate size decreased linearly with increasing kairomonelevel. In a starvation experiment, newly born neonates of mothersnot cultivated in the presence of kairomones survived the longest. These results show that Daphnia is able to adjust its life historytraits to different levels of kairomones, and thus to differentfish densities.  相似文献

Ejaculates comprise multiple and potentially interacting traits that determine male fertility and sperm competitiveness. Consequently, selection on these traits is likely to be intense, but the efficacy of selection will depend critically on patterns of genetic variation and covariation underlying their expression. In this study, I provide a prospective quantitative genetic analysis of ejaculate traits in the guppy Poecilia reticulata, a highly promiscuous live-bearing fish. I used a standard paternal half-sibling breeding design to characterize patterns of genetic (co)variation in components of sperm length and in vitro sperm performance. All traits exhibited high levels of phenotypic and additive genetic variation, and in several cases, patterns of genetic variation was consistent with Y-linkage. There were also highly significant negative genetic correlations between the various measures of sperm length and sperm performance. In particular, the length of the sperm's midpiece was strongly, negatively and genetically correlated with sperm's swimming velocity-an important determinant of sperm competitiveness in this and other species. Other components of sperm length, including the flagellum and head, were independently and negatively genetically correlated with the proportion of live sperm in the ejaculate (sperm viability). Whether these relationships represent evolutionary trade-offs depends on the precise relationships between these traits and competitive fertilization rates, which have yet to be fully resolved in this (and indeed most) species. Nevertheless, these prospective analyses point to potential constraints on ejaculate evolution and may explain the high level of phenotypic variability in ejaculate traits in this species.  相似文献

We investigated the life history alterations of coexisting Daphnia species responding to environmental temperature and predator cues. In a laboratory experiment, we measured Daphnia life history plasticity under different predation risk and temperature treatments that simulate changing environmental conditions. Daphnia pulicaria abundance and size at first reproduction (SFR) declined, while ephippia (resting egg) formation increased at high temperatures. Daphnia mendotae abundance and clutch size increased with predation risk at high temperatures, but produced few ephippia. Thus, each species exhibited phenotypic plasticity, but responded in sharply different ways to the same environmental cues. In Glen Elder reservoir, Kansas USA, D. pulicaria dominance shifted to D. mendotae dominance as temperature and predation risk increased from March to June in both 1999 and 2000. Field estimates of life history shifts mirrored the laboratory experiment results, suggesting that similar phenotypic responses to seasonal cues contribute to seasonal Daphnia population trends. These results illustrate species-specific differences in life history plasticity among coexisting zooplankton taxa.  相似文献

Daphnia pulex clones originating from twelve small pond habitats were exposed to chemical cues from a size-selective predator, larvae of the phantom midge Chaoborus. Exposure delayed the onset of reproduction and increased the size at first reproduction. On the other hand, the neonates produced by these larger mothers were slightly smaller than the neonates produced by the smaller control mothers. In cladocerans, neonate size is usually positively correlated to the size of the mother. Thus exposure to Chaoborus kairomone apparently had direct effects on neonate size counterbalancing the maternal effects. Daphnia clones collected from Chaoborus-free and Chaoborus-rich environments exhibited different responses. In first adult instar, the clones from Chaoborus inhabited environments increased their offspring size under Chaoborus exposure whereas clones from Chaoborus-free environments did not. This may reflect clonal adaptation to the predation prehistory of their original habitat since larger neonates more quickly reach a size protected from the predator.  相似文献

In organisms encountering predictable environments, fixed development is expected, whereas in organisms that cannot predict their future environment, phenotypic plasticity would be optimal to increase local adaptation. To test this prediction we experimentally compared phenotypic plasticity in two rocky-shore snail species; Littorina saxatilis releasing miniature snails on the shore, and Littorina littorea releasing drifting larvae settling on various shores, expecting L. littorea to show more phenotypic plasticity than L. saxatilis. We compared magnitude and direction of vectors of phenotypic difference in juvenile shell traits after 3 months exposure to different stimuli simulating sheltered and crab-rich shores, or wave-exposed and crab-free shores. Both species showed similar direction and magnitude of vectors of phenotypic difference with minor differences only between ecotypes of the nondispersing species, indicating that plasticity is an evolving trait in L. saxatilis. The lack of a strong plastic response in L. littorea might be explained by limits rather than costs to plasticity.  相似文献

Reproductive traits have a major influence on the economic effectiveness of horse breeding. However, there is little information available. We evaluated the use of reproductive traits as selection criteria in official breeding programs to increase the reproductive efficiency of breeding studs, analysing 696 690 records from the pedigree data of eight Spanish horse populations, with different breeding purposes. The reproductive parameters studied in both sexes were age at first foaling (AFF), age at last foaling, average reproductive life and generational interval. In the females, the average interval between foaling (AIF) and interval between first and second foaling were also studied. There were clear differences between sexes and breeds, which may be due to management practices, breeding purposes and the status of the populations, rather than to differences in actual physiological conditions. Riding mares were the most precocious (AFF, 1937.64 to 2255.69 days) and had a more intensive reproductive use (AIF, 625.83 to 760.07 days), whereas sires used for meat production were the most precocious males (AFF, 1789.93 to 1999.75 days), although they had a shorter reproductive life (1564.34 to 1797.32 days). Heritabilities (0.02 to 0.42 in females and 0.04 to 0.28 in males) evidenced the genetic component of the reproductive traits, with Sport Horses having the higher average values. These results support the selection by AFF to improve reproductive aspects because of its medium–high heritability and its positive correlations with other important reproductive traits. The inclusion of the AIF is also recommended in sport populations, because this determines the length of the breaks between foaling and conditions the reproductive performance of the dams, as well as their selective intensity, genetic gain and genetic improvement. It is therefore an important economic parameter in breeding studs.  相似文献

Vertebrates respond to environmental stressors through the neuro-endocrine stress response, which involves the production of glucocorticoids. We have selected independent, duplicate divergent lines of zebra finches for high, low and control corticosterone responses to a mild stressor. This experiment has shown that over the first four generations, the high lines have demonstrated a significant realized heritability of about 20%. However, the low lines have apparently not changed significantly from controls. This asymmetry in response is potentially because of the fact that all birds appear to be showing increased adaptation to the environment in which they are housed, with significant declines in corticosterone response in control lines as well as low lines. Despite the existence of two- to threefold difference in mean corticosterone titre between high and low lines, there were no observed differences in testosterone titre in adult male birds from the different groups. In addition, there were no consistent, significant differences between the lines in any of the life history variables measured--number of eggs laid per clutch, number of clutches or broods produced per pair, number of fledglings produced per breeding attempt, nor in any of egg, nestling and fledgling mortality. These results highlight the fact that the mechanisms that underlie variation in the avian physiological system can be modified to respond to differences between environments through selection. This adds an additional level of flexibility to the avian physiological system, which will allow it to respond to environmental circumstances.  相似文献

All 36 possible crosses among 6 homozygous lines of Drosophila melanogaster were tested for their phenotypic response in developmental time and dry weight at eclosion to variation in temperature and yeast concentration. This method was chosen because it allows one to produce the same heterozygous offspring repeatedly for testing under more conditions than could be handled at once. We estimated the effects of yeast concentration and temperature and their interaction on both the phenotypic and the environmental components of variation and covariation of the two traits. Development was slower at low temperatures and yeast concentrations, and dry weight and viability were lower at higher temperatures and lower yeast levels. Interactions of the two factors with the crosses and with each other indicated that there were genetic differences in plasticity and that the sensitivity of a trait to one factor depended on the level of the other. The covariation of the two traits was generally weak within an environment. Across environments, its sign depended on the factor that changed between the environments: positive for temperature, negative for yeast concentration. These findings can be explained in terms of an established growth model for Drosophila larvae. We conclude that for plastic traits with moderate or low heritability, the relationship between the phenotypic and genetic covariance matrices may be a complex function of the environmental factors that affect the traits. Some implications for the prediction of the evolution in fluctuating environments are outlined.  相似文献

Summary A series of experiments revealed significant differences in the potential ability of seven Daphnia pulex genotypes to colonize two lakes in which this species does not naturally reside. Life table experiments, in which individuals from each genotype were raised separately on water and natural phytoplankton from the two lakes, revealed several significant differences among genotypes in life history traits, including age and size at first reproduction, clutch size and offspring body size. Significant differences among genotypes were also found in mean genotype fitness and rate of population increase, although all genotypes were able to increase in absolute numbers. Significant genotypexlake interaction was found for several life history traits and mean fitness, indicating that the relative success of invading genotypes may depend on habitat characteristics. Enclosure experiments, in which all seven genotypes were introduced together into enclosures in both lakes, revealed that some genotypes increased greatly while others declined in relative abundance, and that the most successful genotypes differed between lakes. In addition, the most successful genotypes in the enclosures were not necessarily the genotypes that displayed the highest fitness in the life table experiments, possibly because individuals in the enclosures competed for food resources, leading to exclusion of certain genotypes.  相似文献

Chemical cues from a predator Chaoborus sp. induce morphological defense (neck spine) and life history shifts (later reproduction, decreased fecundity but larger juvenile size) in the waterflea Daphnia pulex. These shifts have been interpreted either as costs of defense or as separate adaptation. In order to investigate if the life history shifts can be separated from the morphological defense, Daphnia pulex individuals were exposed to chemical cues from Chaoborus at different stages of life for variable periods. The daphnids that were exposed to Chaoborus started their reproduction later than the controls, although the differences were not statistically significant. Neck spine was induced only if daphnids were exposed to Chaoborus in an early stage of their life. Numbers of eggs produced were not affected by the different treatments, but egg mortality was higher in mothers exposed to Chaoborus. With these treatments it was possible to see neck spine induction without measurable life history changes or costs. On the other hand, irrespective of neck spine presence, the Chaoborus chemical(s) had an effect on Daphnia pulex mothers.Publication no 2159. Individuals in aquatic communities frequently assess their biotic environment through infochemicals. In particular, kairomones are commonly involved in interactions between predator and prey. However, the relationship between individuals and chemicals produced by other organisms that are not direct predators, but may indicate the presence of a predator, is not well characterized. We used experimental microcosms to test whether the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii alters vertical migration patterns in response to kairomones produced by zooplankton ( Daphnia ) and planktivores (fish). Our results suggested that phototaxis in C. reinhardtii was strongly affected by the type of kairomone present, the concentration of the kairomone, and the duration of exposure to the kairomone. Kairomones generally increased phototaxis in C. reinhardtii . The adaptive significance of such behavioral changes in natural settings would depend largely on local community composition. The similarity in phototactic responses of C. reinhardtii to Daphnia and fish kairomone suggest that, in at least this species of phytoplankton, the underlying genetic elements responsible for kairomone detection may be responsive to a broad range of chemical stimuli, allowing this species to adjust its phototaxis in response to not only the presence of its grazers, but also to predators of its grazers.  相似文献

The effect of non-lethal thermal conditions on the diapause response to a simulated threat of fish predation was tested in the freshwater planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. From an early developmental stage, female Daphnia were either exposed or not exposed to fish kairomones that notified of the threat of fish predation at the benign growth temperatures of 18, 22 or 26 °C. The proportion of females switching from the production of subitaneous to diapausing eggs and their rate of reproduction were recorded.Besides the faster development and more intense reproduction observed at higher temperatures, a smaller proportion of the females formed protective, diapausing eggs when exposed to fish kairomones than was the case in colder conditions. The production of diapausing eggs was not observed when the threat of fish predation was absent. These results indicate an interactive effect of fish kairomones and thermal conditions on diapause induction in D. magna. We interpret these findings in the context of strategies for the maximisation of reproductive success. The production of well protected diapausing eggs (which assures low yet stable gains under diverse thermal conditions) may be a more beneficial life history strategy at lower temperatures, where the chances of survival of active individuals until maturation and successful reproduction are low. Higher temperatures permit faster maturation and more intensive reproduction that may surpass numerical losses of active descendants due to predation, making diapause a less rewarding option.  相似文献
