Quercus rugosa and Q.laurina are species that presents a wide geographical distribution range in temperate forests of Mexico. Oak canopies contain a considerable portion of arthropod diversity and the arthropods fauna fulfill a wide variety of ecological roles. We examined the effect of oak species and seasonal changes on some community structure parameters (diversity, composition, similarity, biomass, rare species, and density of arthropod fauna) of canopy arthropods. In total, 40 oak canopies were fogged during rainy and dry season. A total of 614 identified arthropod morphospecies were recognized belonging to 22 orders associated with tree canopies. A separation of host tree species during both seasons, suggesting a different community structure on host plants species was demonstrated by the principal component analyses (PCA), therefore, differences between oak species results in phenotypes that structure the composition of the arthropod community. Q.laurina registered the highest densities, diversity index and number of rare species in comparison with Q.rugosa. While arthropod biomass showed an inverse pattern. Trees more close to one another (spatial distance) register a more similar canopy arthropod fauna. This study suggests that the trees of Q.laurina could act as a center of biodiversity by the accumulation of arthropod fauna with a considerable number of rare species, which presents wide ecological roles or is involved in critical processes that maintain forest ecosystems[Current Zoology 55(2):132-144,2009].  相似文献

Abstract A 2 year study (using a branch-clipping technique) of the arthropod fauna of jarrah crowns (14 m above ground level) in a 7500km2 area centred on Manjimup, Western Australia, yielded 7461 individuals belonging to 396 species. Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Araneae dominated the fauna in abundance and biomass but Lepidoptera less so in number of species. Consequently, leaf chewers, sapsuckers and predators were the dominant guilds. Most species showed great spatial and temporal variation in their occurrence, with some 73% being recorded on only one or two of the nine sampling occasions. In addition 77% of species were recorded on four or fewer of the 45 trees sampled. Crowns of these trees tended to have highly dissimilar assemblages of arthropods. Dissimilarity between trees was not predictable from the distance between them. Total species richness was greatest in samples collected in summer. Predators and sapsuckers tended to be the most speciose guilds. Within-stand differences were much less pronounced than between-stand differences: ants were more abundant on jarrah foliage within 2 m of ground level and the pest defoliator Uraba lugens (Lepidoptera, Noc-tuidae) was more abundant on foliage of jarrah pole crowns 14 m above ground. The most abundant arthropod, U. lugens, did not reduce appreciably the biomass or abundance of other arthropod groups present in jarrah pole crowns. This is consistent with the paradigm that competition between species of herbivorous insects is infrequent. After comparison with other studies in jarrah forest, we tentatively conclude that there is no single fixed pattern of organization or predictable assemblage of invertebrates on jarrah foliage.  相似文献

Quercus crassifolia and Q. crassipes are dominant species in temperate forests of central Mexico and hybridize between each other when they occur in sympatry. Oak canopies contain a considerable portion of arthropod diversity and the hybrid zones can provide new habitats to epiphyte fauna. We tested if the establishment of hybrids in contact zones with their parental hosts increases the species diversity of canopy arthropods assuming that hybrid trees constitute new genotypes of potential new habitats to small organisms. We examined the effect of hybridization on some community structure parameters (diversity, composition, similarity and density of arthropod fauna) of canopy arthropods compared to their parental species in a hybrid zone located in central Mexico. We employed 17 leaf morphological traits and six diagnostic RAPD primers to identify parental and hybrid plants. The RAPDs marker showed unidirectional introgression towards Q. crassifolia, and were detected hybrid (F1), backcrosses and introgression individual trees. In total, 30 oak canopies were fogged during rainy and dry season. We recognized 532 taxa of arthropods belonging to 22 orders associated with tree canopies. The taxonomic status of host‐trees may be an important factor in the arthropod community structure and that seasonality (dry and rainy) is not a factor that could modify their organization. Trees of Q. crassipes registered the highest densities of arthropod fauna followed by hybrid hosts (F1); trees originated by backcrosses towards Q. crassifolia registered a significant less arthropod density than F1 hybrids; and trees of Q. crassifolia had the lowest density. Hybrid plants and Q. crassipes individuals had higher diversity (H′) of arthropods than Q. crassifolia plants. Hybrid plants had also more rare species in both seasons in comparison with parental species. This study suggests that hybrid oaks act as a center of biodiversity by accumulating arthropods of both parental and different species including a considerable number of rare species.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Seventeen species of phytophagous arthropods (sixteen insects and one gall-forming eryiophyid mite) were found feeding on the above-ground parts of bracken ( Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Khun.) in surveys throughout the geographic range of the plant in South Africa. A further thirteen species of insects may possibly feed on the plant in this region.
2. Given the area over which bracken grows in South Africa, this is very close to the number of species expected on the plant, based on species-area calculations and comparisons with bracken in other geographic regions.
3. The species-richness of bracken-feeding arthropods in local communities reflects the size of the regional pool of species in different geographic areas. Local richness in South Africa is intermediate between that in south-western U.S.A. and Britain.
4. In both Britain and South Africa there is a weak tendency (0.05 < P < 0.07) for larger local patches of bracken to support more species of phytophages than small patches, with similar very shallow slopes (0.083 and 0.086) in plots of log species versus log area on both continents.
5. The taxonomic composition of bracken-feeding arthropods in South Africa is markedly different from that in other pants of the world, suggesting very different and largely independent evolutionary histories in different regions.
6. There is no sign of convergence in the feeding niches of communities of bracken-feeding arthropods in different parts of the world, and the pattern of feeding relationships is very different in South Africa to patterns observed elsewhere. Conspicuous vacant niches (ways of exploiting the plant that are observed in other geographic regions) are easily identified in the South African communities.  相似文献

Detailed estimations of habitat structure, plant species diversity and diversity of arthropods were made at six 4.0 ha sites, two on mainland Western Australia near Perth and four on adjacent islands. The number of resident passerine bird species was also recorded at each site. Plant species diversity, and horizontal foliage diversity (=patchiness) varied only slightly between sites. There were significant positive correlations between arthropod Order diversity and bird diversity, and between vertical foliage diversity and bird diversity. In both Acacia and dune scrub, the Rottnest Island sites had more individuals of arthropods than the mainland sites but these belonged to fewer Orders. Numerical imbalance between arthropod Orders on Rottnest Island probably results from diminution of predators (passerine birds) there. As the actual number of arthropods is higher on the islands, the absence of so many species of passerine birds may result from other factors (ecological and historical).  相似文献

The composition of an avian foliage-gleaning guild was analyzed with respect to body size at nine sites along an elevational gradient in the Oregon Cascades. Mean body size decreased from 20.5 g near the lower forest boundary where it meets the grassland at about 775 m to 9.3 g near timberline at about 1720 m. Both the loss of larger species and the gain of smaller species contributed to the change. Mean volume of the foliage-dwelling arthropods also decreased with increasing elevation by two orders of magnitude along the same gradient. A significant decrease in body size occurred in three arthropod groups, larval Lepidoptera, Homoptera, and spiders, and of these, larval Lepidoptera dominated the overall size trend among arthropods. Both developmental differences (higher elevation sites are delayed seasonally on the same calendar date) and taxonomic differences contributed to the change in mean arthropod size. Mean bird size was positively correlated (r=0.93) with the body size of foliage-dwelling arthropods. A similar pattern was suggested for other avian guilds dependent directly or indirectly upon foliage-dwelling arthropods, but not for guilds independent of foliage-dwelling arthropods.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The effectiveness of ants as plant defenders is equivocal for plants that attract ants via extrafloral nectaries (EFNs).
2. This study focused on the myrmecophilic savannah tree Pseudocedrela kotschyi that attracts ants to EFNs and on the arthropod fauna associated with P. kotschyi . Herbivory and arthropod community composition were compared between trees that were dominated by one of three congeneric ant species, Camponotus acvapimensis , C. rufoglaucus , and C. sericeus , and between trees where ants were experimentally excluded and untreated control trees.
3. Short-term ant-exclusion experiments failed to demonstrate a consistent effect of ants on herbivory.
4. Plants dominated by different ant species differed significantly in leaf damage caused by herbivorous insects. The relative ranking of herbivory levels of the trees dominated by different ant species was persistent in three consecutive years.
5. Ants significantly reduced the abundance of different arthropod groups (Araneae, Blattodea, Coleoptera, Homoptera, non-ant Hymenoptera). Other groups, including important herbivores, seemed not to be affected (Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Thysanoptera, Heteroptera).
6. The study suggests that the presence of ants only benefits plants when specific ant species are attracted, and protection by these ants is not counterbalanced by their negative effect on other beneficial arthropods.  相似文献

Abstract: As top predators, birds may have significant effects on arthropod abundances and affect the trophic structure of arthropod communities through predation of lower order predators (e.g. spiders) and by competition for prey. We investigated the effects of bird predation on canopy arthropods in south‐western Australia by using plastic bird mesh to exclude insectivorous birds from the foliage of wandoo Eucalyptus wandoo saplings. Exclosure resulted in an increase in the number of herbivorous and predatory arthropods. Total arthropods (with and without ants), spiders, adult Coleoptera, and larval Lepidoptera were significantly more abundant on meshed than unmeshed saplings. All size‐classes of arthropods, taxa grouped, were more abundant on meshed than unmeshed saplings, but with no evidence of a disproportionate increase of the largest arthropods on meshed saplings. All size‐classes of spiders increased in abundance on saplings from which birds were excluded. There were significant differences in the total abundance of arthropods (with and without ants), spiders (Araneae), sucking bugs (Homoptera), adult beetles (Coleoptera), larval moths (Lepidoptera), and wasps and ants (Hymenoptera) for both unmeshed and meshed saplings between sample periods. These seasonal patterns of abundance and differences between sample periods appeared to be determined by seasonal weather patterns, with the lowest numbers associated with drier and hotter conditions in summer and autumn than in winter and spring. The conclusion reached is that eucalypt forest birds have limited effects on temporal variation in canopy arthropod abundances, but depress abundances, and affect the size and trophic composition of the fauna. Given the cascading effects of birds as predators on arthropods, successful conservation management of eucalypt ecosystems, including plantations and revegetation, should be planned to maximize bird numbers and diversity.  相似文献

Abstract The structure of free‐living arthropod communities on the foliage of Acacia falcata was assessed along an extensive latitudinal gradient in eastern Australia. We hypothesized that abundance and biomass of arthropods within feeding groups would increase from temperate latitudes towards the tropics. We also hypothesized that the ratio of carnivores to herbivores would be consistent along the latitudinal gradient. Three sites at each of four latitudes, spanning 9° and 1150 km (Batemans Bay, Sydney, Grafton, Gympie in Australia), were sampled every season for 2 years, using pyrethrum knockdown. Abundance and biomass (based on dry weight) of arthropods within eight feeding groups were measured. The relative size of the feeding groups, and the ratio of carnivores to herbivores were then compared among latitudes and seasons. We found no consistent north to south (tropical to temperate) change in feeding group structure in terms of abundance. A weak latitudinal trend was evident for predator biomass, consisting of a reduction from north to south, but no significant trends in biomass for other feeding groups were found. Relative abundance and relative biomass of both carnivores and herbivores, as well as the ratio of carnivores to herbivores were consistent among latitudes. Finally, we compared a subset of these data to arthropod communities found on congeneric host species at individual sites along the latitudinal gradient. Overall, 68% of comparisons showed no significant differences in abundance or biomass within different feeding groups between host plants and among latitudes. We conclude that arthropod communities show consistencies among latitudes and between congeneric host species, in terms of feeding group and trophic structure. These results have implications for predicting the impacts of future climate change on arthropod communities.  相似文献

Human trade and transport is a major contributor to the global spread of invasive species and biodiversity change. Much of the focus on anthropogenic spread has been the movement of species between countries with far less attention being placed on the within country spread. For invasive arthropods, trade in ornamentals is a key contributor to global spread, but the role played by the transport of ornamentals within countries has been less well explored. In China, the hosting of major international events is an important expression of national and international pride and prestige. Hosting these is associated with the substantial use of landscaping to beautify the sites, all of which need to transport considerable numbers of plants to the event sites from various parts of China. To assess the consequences of this in terms of the spread of arthropod pests we sampled ornamental plants used to landscape the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing and the 16th Asia Games in Guangzhou. Plants used to landscape the Olympic Games were transported from ten provinces from across the eastern half of China. A total of 44 species of herbivorous arthropods belonging to six orders were recorded with eight species being new records for Beijing. Plants used at the 16th Asian Games came from five provinces. In total 32 species of arthropod herbivores belonging to six orders were recorded with four being new records for Guangdong province. Our results suggested that measures need to be considered to reduce the likelihood of invasive species spread when hosting major international events.  相似文献

The intensive foraging of insectivorous birds and bats is well known to reduce the density of arboreal herbivorous arthropods but quantification of collateral leaf damage remains limited for temperate forest canopies. We conducted exclusion experiments with nets in the crowns of young and mature oaks, Quercus robur, in south and central Germany to investigate the extent to which aerial vertebrates reduce herbivory through predation. We repeatedly estimated leaf damage throughout the vegetation period. Exclusion of birds and bats led to a distinct increase in arthropod herbivory, emphasizing the prominent role of vertebrate predators in controlling arthropods. Leaf damage (e.g., number of holes) differed strongly between sites and was 59% higher in south Germany, where species richness of vertebrate predators and relative oak density were lower compared with our other study site in central Germany. The effects of bird and bat exclusion on herbivory were 19% greater on young than on mature trees in south Germany. Our results support previous studies that have demonstrated clear effects of insectivorous vertebrates on leaf damage through the control of herbivorous arthropods. Moreover, our comparative approach on quantification of leaf damage highlights the importance of local attributes such as tree age, forest composition and species richness of vertebrate predators for control of arthropod herbivory.  相似文献

Effects of litter removal on arthropod communities in pine plantations   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Natural and anthropogenic disturbances can cause abrupt changes in trophic interactions by altering the rate, timing, or composition of organic inputs to ecological systems which in turn can shift patterns of species dominance. We examined the short-term effects of litter removal on soil fauna in pine plantations of three different species (longleaf, Pinus palustris; loblolly, P. taeda; and slash, P. elliottii) using a manipulative experiment, with the goal of examining differences among dominant orders of arthropods and differences among timber types. We sampled arthropods once per month for 6 months immediately following raking, and found that removal of the litter caused significant changes to abundance or presence of five of the nine dominant orders. Reductions in abundances of arthropod orders were most apparent in loblolly pine stands, while increases in abundance were more common in longleaf and slash pine stands. The differential impact among orders suggests that removal of the litter layer is likely to alter trophic interactions by changing the relative abundance of functional groups. Repeated litter removal via raking could have negative repercussions on ecosystem stability. Finally, nutrient additions through fertilization seem unlikely to mitigate the changes imposed on the arthropod community through litter removal.  相似文献

Canopy arthropods, mainly from palm trees, are little known in the Brazilian Cerrado. In order to describe the arthropod community structure associated with the crown of Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae), we sampled 150 palm trees in six "veredas" of the Federal District, Brazil, in wild, rural and periurban areas in the rainy season. The arthropods within abandoned bird nests, mammal refuges, leaves and organic matter were manually collected, preserved in ethanol 70% and separated by order, family, morphospecies and feeding guilds. Stem height and diameter of the palm crowns were measured and leaves and bird nests were counted. We collected 3,862 arthropods, from 15 orders, 45 families and 135 morphospecies. The most abundant orders were Coleoptera (28.6%), Blattodea (21.8%), Collembola (11.4%) and Hemiptera (10.2%). The families Blaberidae, Entomobryidae, Reduviidae, Oniscidae, Staphylinidae, Carabidae and Formicidae, represented 82.1% of all individuals collected. The majority of morphospecies was not abundant, 71 (52.6%) were represented by less than 1 individual/tree. Coleopterans accounted for the highest number of morphospecies (43.7%) followed by Araneae (20.0%). The analysis of the arthropod feeding guilds showed prevalence of predatory/hematophagous ones (36.0%). Arthropod richness and abundance presented smaller values for periurban environment. The number of bird nests presented positive correlation with abundance and richness; this was not found when considering the measurements of the palm trees. The importance of M. flexuosa for the maintenance of the arthropod fauna of the "veredas" in Cerrado biome is discussed.  相似文献

1. Many arthropods are predators of vertebrates: four orders of the class arachnida, six orders of insecta, five orders of crustacea and one order of chilopoda include species that have been reported to eat vertebrates. At the population level, some arthropods are responsible for significant mortality among some vertebrates.
2. Arthropods are well equipped for this type of predation; many are larger than vertebrates (approximately 20% of the vertebrate fauna of eastern North America is less than 10 cm in length), they may hunt in social groups and many have toxins or other adaptations that increase predatory efficiency.
3. Several arthropod predators and vertebrates may be involved in cross predation, the species eating each other. The switch in the role of predator and prey occurs during 'ontogenetic reversal' as the vertebrate grows from small and vulnerable to large and predaceous. Cross predation decreases the future risk for one's self or offspring.
4. The opportunity for arthropod predation on vertebrates exists in many communities, but a review of some food webs catalogued by Cohen (1978) indicates that this particular link may be easily overlooked. Some arthropods should be investigated as potential predators of vertebrates.
5. The information available from the analysis of feeding interactions in a community should be an important link between field and theoretical ecology; however, most food webs are probably underestimates of the complexity that is commonplace.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A comparison is made between the fauna of six British tree species sampled by pyrethrum knockdown and the faunal lists in the literature for the same tree species.
2. Conspecific trees vary both in abundance of arthropods and their proportional distribution across taxa, but there are important overriding differences between tree species.
3. The percentage similarity in faunal composition between tree species reflects the ecological specificity of the arthropod groups used for the comparison.
4. The similarity in species composition between tree species is least for phytophages, the guild most closely associated with particular tree species, The two species of Salix are most similar in their fauna for most guilds.
5. About 40% of the entirely phytophagous species in the faunal lists for native trees were found in the knockdown samples.
6. The proportion of individuals of predominantly phytophagous taxa collected that belong to the relevant faunal lists ranges from 0.39 to 0.99.
7. Those species found in the knockdown samples which are not included in faunal lists none the less contribute to the trophic web of the tree.
8. The relative species richness of arboreal faunas assessed from knockdown samples parallels that derived from faunal lists.

Fauna of parasitic and free-living arthropods associated the water vole Arvicola terestris and its nests in various landscape zones and subzones of the south of Western Siberia has been studied. Total abundance of gamasid mites and ticks (Gamasoidea, Ixodidae), fleas and nidicolous arthropods in nests is high, and the set of nidicolous and parasite species is quite diverse, but everywhere the parasite fauna is characterized by a small amount of species reaching a high abundance: Laelaps muris on the voles, Haemogamasus ambulans in nests, Ixodes apronophorus and Megpbotris walkeri both on the voles and nests. Parasitic arthropods living on the voles or in their nests are characterized by higher and stables indices of infection, while these parameters for free-living arthropods were variable. The list of mesostigmatic mites parasitizing the water vole and its nests in the south of Western Siberia (Adamovich, Krylov, 2001) has been considerably supplemented. In total, the fauna of parsitiform mites (Acari: Mesostigmata and Ixodiddes) and fleas (Siphonaptera) associated with the water vole in the south of Western Siberia is represented by 97 arthropod species of 19 families, including 74 species of mesostigmatic mites (Gamasoidea), 6 species of ticks (Ixodidae) and 17 species of fleas.  相似文献

It has been widely accepted that herbivory induces morphological, phenological, and chemical changes in a wide variety of terrestrial plants. There is an increasing appreciation that herbivore‐induced plant responses affect the performance and abundance of other arthropods. However, we still have a poor understanding of the effects of induced plant responses on community structures of arthropods. We examined the community‐level effects of willow regrowth in response to damage by larvae of swift moth Endoclita excrescence (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) on herbivorous and predaceous arthropods on three willow species, Salix gilgiana, S. eriocarpa and S. serissaefolia. The leaves of sprouting lateral shoots induced by moth‐boring had a low C:N ratio. The overall abundance and species richness of herbivorous insects on the lateral shoots were increased on all three willow species. Densities of specialist chewers and sap‐feeders, and leaf miners increased on the newly emerged lateral shoots. In contrast, the densities of generalist chewers and sap‐feeders, and gall makers did not increase. Furthermore, ant and spider densities, and the overall abundance and species richness of predaceous arthropods increased on the lateral shoots on S. gilgiana and S. eriocarpa, but not S. serissaefolia. In addition to finding that effects of moth‐boring on arthropod abundance and species richness varied among willow species, we also found that moth‐boring, willow species, and their interaction differentially affected community composition. Our findings suggest that moth‐boring has community‐wide impacts on arthropod assemblages across three trophic levels via induced shoot regrowth and increase arthropod species diversity in this three willow species system.  相似文献

The land snail faunas of 26 forest sites and two open rocky sites in the Crimean Mountains were sampled in 2011. Of the 40 species found within the forests (about half the known fauna of Crimea as a whole), 28 were species with wide western Palaearctic distributions, and only eight were endemic to Crimea. While there were significant differences in the faunas of different sampling areas, these seemed to be a consequence of ecological differences among them rather than a product of geographical isolation and differentiation. Endemic species were large, and not entirely restricted to forest; known endemics not found in these forests are mainly typical of more open habitats. There is no local radiation of small species living in damp forest litter, as with Leiostyla species in the Transcaucasian forest refugium, and families such as the Clausiliidae with many endemic forest species in both Transcaucasia and the Carpathians are sparsely represented. The one endemic clausiliid genus, Mentissa, occurs in open as well as in wooded habitats. The present faunas are rather poor considering the soil conditions and climate, and the forests hold widespread species often associated with open habitats elsewhere. While there is evidence that these mountains provided a refuge for many animals and plants during glacial episodes further north, the forest snail fauna suggests that full forest cover did not survive throughout the Pleistocene. An experimental investigation of host specificity within the Thelastomatoidea is presented by means of a comparison of the thelastomatoids of two panesthiine cockroaches, Panesthia cribrata and P. tryoni tryoni, with those of other log-dwelling arthropods and those of leaf litter dwelling arthropods found near by. 145 log-dwelling and leaf-litter dwelling arthropods, representing adjacent ecological niches, were collected from Lamington National Park, Queensland, Australia. A high degree of thelastomatoid species sharing (19 incidences from 26 specimens) occurs between log-dwelling arthropods and the two cockroach species. No overlap in thelastomatoid fauna was observed between the log dwelling and leaf-litter dwelling groups. Our results suggest that host specificity of thelastomatoids is largely dictated by host ecology.  相似文献
