Growth and calcium carbonate deposition rates of the coralline alga Calliarthron cheilosporioides Manza were quantified by monitoring fronds in the intertidal zone that had been chemically labeled with the nontoxic fluorescent brightener Calcofluor white. This vital stain effectively labeled apical meristems of coralline thalli in the field: fronds exposed for only 5 min had detectable chemical marks at least 1.5 years later. By distinguishing portions of thalli that developed before and after exposure, this methodology permitted accurate measurement of growth and calcium carbonate deposition at each meristem. In Calliarthron, meristematic activity declined with increasing frond size. However, because growing fronds dichotomize, the total number of meristems and the deposition rate of new calcified tissue both increased with frond size. Growth rates reported here suggest that large fronds may not be as old as previously estimated. The Calcofluor white method may improve demographic studies of corallines by resolving growth and age of fronds in the field and may facilitate studies of climate change on calcium carbonate deposition in these ecologically important, calcifying algae.  相似文献

The articulated coralline Calliarthron cheilosporioides Manza produces segmented fronds composed of calcified segments (intergenicula) separated by uncalcified joints (genicula), which allow fronds to bend and reorient under breaking waves in the wave‐swept intertidal zone. Genicula are formed when calcified cells decalcify and restructure to create flexible tissue. The present study has identified important differences in the main agaran disaccharidic repeating units [→3)‐β‐d ‐Galp (1→ 4)‐α‐l ‐Galp(1→] synthesized by genicular and intergenicular segments. Based on chemical and spectroscopical analyses, we report that genicular cells from C. cheilosporioides biosynthesize a highly methoxylated galactan at C‐6 position with low levels of branching with xylose side stubs on C‐6 of the [→3)‐β‐d ‐Galp (1→] units, whereas intergenicular segments produce xylogalactans with high levels of xylose and low levels of 6‐O‐methyl β‐d ‐Gal units. These data suggest that, during genicular development, xylosyl branched, 3‐linked β‐d ‐Galp units present in the xylogalactan backbones from intergenicular walls are mostly replaced by 6‐O‐methyl‐d‐ galactose units. We speculate that this structural shift is a consequence of a putative and specific methoxyl transferase that blocks the xylosylation on C‐6 of the 3‐linked β‐d ‐Galp units. Changes in galactan substitutions may contribute to the distinct mechanical properties of genicula and may lend insight into the calcification process in coralline algae.  相似文献

Previous biomechanical studies of wave‐swept macroalgae have revealed a trade‐off in growth strategies to resist breakage in the intertidal zone: growing in girth versus growing strong tissues. Brown macroalgae, such as kelps, grow thick stipes but have weak tissues, while red macroalgae grow slender thalli but have much stronger tissues. For example, genicular tissue in the articulated coralline Calliarthron cheilosporioides Manza is more than an order of magnitude stronger than some kelp tissues, but genicula rarely exceed 1 mm in diameter. The great tissue strength of Calliarthron genicula results, at least in part, from a lifelong strengthening process. Here, a histological analysis is presented to explore the cellular basis for mechanical strengthening in Calliarthron genicula. Genicula are composed of thousands of fiber‐like cells, whose cell walls thicken over time. Thickening of constitutive cell walls likely explains why older genicula have stronger tissues: a mature geniculum may be >50% cell wall. However, the material strength of genicular cell wall is similar to the strength of cell wall from a freshwater green alga, suggesting that it may be the quantity—not the quality—of cell wall material that gives genicular tissue its strength. Apparent differences in tissue strength across algal taxa may be a consequence of tissue construction rather than material composition.  相似文献

Coralline algae are conspicuous members of many marine assemblages, especially those characterized by intense grazing pressure. We explored whether articulated species, especially Corallina vancouveriensis, depend on grazing invertebrates to both establish and flourish in an exposed rocky intertidal setting, and whether this plant–grazer relationship varied over more than three orders of magnitude (≈100–>300,000 μm). Three experimental manipulations, supplemented by observations on recruitment, demonstrated that (i) C. vancouveriensis failed to recover rapidly from disturbed areas when grazers were experimentally excluded; (ii) recruitment occurred in the presence of grazers; (iii) increasing surface texture of molded surfaces enhanced coralline recruitment more when grazers were present; and (iv) settlement occurred predominately in microtopographical low areas of a molded surface, whereas a competitively superior fleshy red alga tended to recruit to high areas. These results confirm that coralline algal establishment and persistence are enhanced by grazers and reveal that this relationship is consistent over a range of biologically relevant scales.  相似文献

Cover of geniculate coralline algae is significantly greater on subtidal platforms than on vertical walls in a central California kelp forest. To determine the cause(s) of this pattern, settlement and growth of Calliarthron were compared on horizontal and vertical substrata attached to platforms or walls. Recruitment on horizontal substrata attached to reef walls indicated that spores were abundant along the walls. Densities of recruits were significantly smaller on vertical substrata attached to walls than on horizontal substrata attached to platforms, indicating that Calliarthron settlement is reduced on vertical substrata. Growth of basal crusts and the densities of fronds were also significantly greater on horizontal substrata attached to platforms than on vertical substrata attached to walls. Irradiance reaching wall surfaces was less than irradiance reaching platform surfaces. We suggest that light reaching wall surface is low enough to affect Calliarthron growth. These results indicate that the low abundance of Calliarthron on subtidal walls is a result of poor recruitment and slow growth.  相似文献

Plants are often grouped as canopy species or understorey species because it is thought that that these sets of taxa interact in predictable ways. Mensurative experiments in southern Australia demonstrated that the percentage cover of encrusting coralline algae was greater, and articulated (branching) coralline algae less, on boulders under a canopy of dense kelp (>7 plants per m2), Ecklonia radiata, than on boulders without kelp. Experimental clearances of kelp and reciprocal transplants of boulders between patches of E. radiata and patches without kelp showed that canopies maintained and facilitated the growth of encrusting coralline algae and reduced the cover of articulated coralline algae. Potential artefacts associated with clearing kelp and transplanting boulders were not detected when tested with a series of translocation controls. These results reject the model that the co‐occurrence of E. radiata and encrusting corallines is just an assemblage of plants caused by spatial and temporal coincidence. Instead, they support the model that kelp facilitates the growth and survival of understorey algae.  相似文献

Bacterial biofilms are increasingly seen as important for the successful settlement of marine invertebrate larvae. Here we tested the effects of biofilms on settlement of the sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma. Larvae settled on many surfaces including various algal species, rocks, sand and shells. Settlement was reduced by autoclaving rocks and algae, and by treatment of algae with antibiotics. These results, and molecular and culture-based analyses, suggested that the bacterial community on plants was important for settlement. To test this, approximately 250 strains of bacteria were isolated from coralline algae, and larvae were exposed to single-strain biofilms. Many induced rates of settlement comparable to coralline algae. The genus Pseudoalteromonas dominated these highly inductive strains, with representatives from Vibrio, Shewanella, Photobacterium and Pseudomonas also responsible for a high settlement response. The settlement response to different bacteria was species specific, as low inducers were also dominated by species in the genera Pseudoalteromonas and Vibrio. We also, for the first time, assessed settlement of larvae in response to characterised, monospecific biofilms in the field. Larvae metamorphosed in higher numbers on an inducing biofilm, Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea, than on either a low-inducing biofilm, Pseudoalteromonas rubra, or an unfilmed control. We conclude that the bacterial community on the surface of coralline algae is important as a settlement cue for H. erythrogramma larvae. This study is also an example of the emerging integration of molecular microbiology and more traditional marine eukaryote ecology.  相似文献

Intertidal macroalgae endure light, desiccation, and temperature variation associated with sub‐merged and emerged conditions on a daily basis. Physiological stresses exist over the course of the entire tidal cycle, and physiological differences in response to these stresses likely contribute to spatial separation of species along the shore. For example, marine species that have a high stress tolerance can live higher on the shore and are able to recover when the tide returns, whereas species with a lower stress tolerance may be relegated to living lower on the shore or in tidepools, where low tide stresses are buffered. In this study, we monitored the physiological responses of the tidepool coralline Calliarthron tuberculosum (Postels and Ruprecht) E.Y. Dawson and the nontidepool coralline Corallina vancouveriensis Yendo during simulated tidal conditions to identify differences in physiology that might underlie differences in habitat. During high tide, Corallina was more photosynthetically active than Calliarthron as light levels increased. During low tide, Corallina continued to out‐perform Calliarthron when submerged in warming tidepools, but photosynthesis abruptly halted for both species when emerged in air. Surprisingly, pigment composition did not differ, suggesting that light harvesting does not account for this difference. Additionally, Corallina was more effective at resisting desiccation by retaining water in its branches. When the tide returned, only Corallina recovered from combined temperature and desiccation stresses associated with emergence. This study broadens our understanding of intertidal algal physiology and provides a new perspective on the physiological and morphological underpinnings of habitat partitioning.  相似文献

Settlement specificity can regulate recruitment but remains poorly understood for coral larvae. We studied larvae of the corals, Acropora palmata and Montastraea faveolata, to determine their rates of settlement and metamorphosis in the presence of ten species of red algae, including eight species of crustose coralline algae, one geniculated coralline and one encrusting peyssonnelid. Twenty to forty percent of larvae of A. palmata settled on coralline surfaces of Hydrolithon boergesenii, Lithoporella atlantica, Neogoniolithon affine, and Titanoderma prototypum, whereas none settled and metamorphosed on Neogoniolithon mamillare. Larvae of M. faveolata had 13–25 % settlement onto the surface of Amphiroa tribulus, H. boergesenii, N. affine, N. munitum, and T. prototypum, but had no settlement on the surface of N. mamillare, Porolithon pachydermum, and a noncoralline crust Peyssonnelia sp. Some of these algal species were common on Belizean reefs, but the species that induced the highest rates of larval settlement and metamorphosis tended to be rare and primarily found in low-light environments. The shallow coral, A. palmata, and the deeper coral, M. faveolata, both had increased larval settlement rates in the presence of only a few species of red algae found at deeper depths suggesting that patterns of coral distribution can only sometimes be related to the distribution of red algae species.  相似文献

The phenomenon of basiphyte specificity in the settlement and growth of the red algal epiphytes Microcladia californica Farl. and M. coulteri Harv. was examined by studying the interface with their respective basiphytes and by cross-inoculation experiments. Microcladia californica attaches only to the surface of its single basiphyte Egregia menziesii (Aresch.) Turn. whereas M. coulteri penetrates the tissue of a wide range of basiphytes. The pattern of primary rhizoid development in both epiphytes determines the mode of attachment and may influence the range of basiphytes possible for each epiphyte. Cross-inoculation experiments show that Microcladia californica is not able to colonize the basiphytes of M. coulteri, Iridaea and Prionitis, or Ulva. The mechanisms by which these algae restrict the growth of epiphytes include short life-span, “cuticle peeling” and chemical defense. Microcladia coulteri, which naturally colonizes Iridaea and Prionitis, has evolved mechanisms to counteract the antifouling effects of those basiphytes. The question of why Egregia is the exclusive substratum for M. californica remains undetermined. However, Egregia may provide the appropriate ecological conditions and a surface topography conductive to M. californica spore settlement and growth.  相似文献

An innovative technique for the estimation of species and growth-form abundance of coralline algae, including information on their vitality, was adopted on the reef crest of Ras Nosrani and Coral Bay, South Sinai. Data of coralline abundance from visual census and collection of voucher specimens were plotted on a 3-D sketched representation of the horizontal and vertical planes of the reef crest and of its crannies. Coralline dominance at the two investigated sites was not significantly different, with values ranging from 8.55 and 10.06% on the vertical plane and from 5.3 to 7.17% on the horizontal plane. About one-third of total corallines of the South Sinai reef crest was located in crannies, where the algae are completely overlooked by routine field surveys. Pink to violet, healthy corallines with encrusting growth-form, mainly belonging to Hydrolithon onkodes and Neogoniolithon, with subordinate fruticose Lithophyllum kotschyanum dominated the reef crest at both sites. The fruticose growth form, usually associated with L. kotschyanum, was more common in the horizontal than in the vertical plane. Purple, healthy, encrusting Sporolithon uncommonly occurred. Whitish, gray or green unhealthy or dead corallines were more common on the horizontal plane at both sites, possibly resulting from excessive solar radiation.  相似文献

The Alcyonacean octocoral Alcyonium siderium Verrill forms dense stands on vertical rock walls (6–18 m subtidal) along the coast of Massachusetts and further north into the Gulf of Maine. Larvae are brooded until their release as crawling demersal planulae in August. Each colony produces several hundred larvae; most crawl onto the nearby substratum although others may be carried away by wave surge.Experimental enclosures were used to examine substratum selection in the field. Planulae metamorphosed in greater numbers than expected by percent cover on the fleshy red crustose alga Waernia mirabilis Wilce (proposed). The crustose coralline algae Phymatolithon rugulosum (Foslie) and Lithothamnium glaciale Kjellman were settled on commonly but less often than expected by their percent cover. Bare rock surfaces were also used, but least frequently. The encrusting invertebrate colonies that cover much of the available substratum were never used as sites of settlement and metamorphosis. These results agree with laboratory evidence that settlement and metamorphosis of Alcyonium planulae can be induced by Waernia and by coralline algae.  相似文献

Coral reef geomorphology and community composition were investigated in the tropical northeastern Pacific during April 1994. Three areas were surveyed in the Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico), and an intensive study was conducted on Clipperton Atoll (1,300 km SW of Acapulco), including macro-scale surface circulation, sea surface temperature (SST) climatology, geomorphology, coral community structure, zonation, and biogeography. Satellite-tracked drifter buoys from 1979–1993 demonstrated complex patterns of surface circulation with dominantly easterly flow (North Equatorial Counter Current, NECC), but also westerly currents (South Equatorial Current, SEC) that could transport propagules to Clipperton from both central and eastern Pacific regions. The northernmost latitude reached by the NECC is not influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, but easterly flow velocity evidently is accelerated at such times. Maximum NECC flow rates indicate that the eastern Pacific barrier can be bridged in 60 to 120 days. SST anomalies at Clipperton occur during ENSO events and were greater at Clipperton in 1987 than during 1982–1983. Shallow (15–18 m)and deep (50–58 m) terraces are present around most of Clipperton, probably representing Modern and late Pleistocene sea level stands. Although Clipperton is a well developed atoll with high coral cover, the reef-building fauna is depauperate, consisting of only 7 species of scleractinian corals belonging to the generaPocillopora, Porites, Pavona andLeptoseris, and 1 species of hydrocoral in the genusMillepora. The identities of the one Pocilpopora species and one of the twoPorites species are still unknown. Two of the remaining scleractinians (Pavona minuta, Leptoseris scabra) and the hydrocoral (Millepora exaesa), all formerly known from central and western Pacific localities, represent new eastern Pacific records. Scleractinian corals predominate (10–100% cover) over insular shelf depths of 8 to 60m, and crustose coralline algae are dominant (5–40% cover) from 0.5 to 7m. Spur and groove features, constructed of alternating frameworks ofPocillopora andPorites, and veneered with crustose coralline algae, are generally well developed around most atoll exposures. Although crustose coralline algae predominate in the breaker zone (with up to 100% cover), a prominent algal ridge is absent with only a slight buildup (ca. 10 cm) to seaward. Frequent grazing by the pufferfishArothron meleagris results in the removal of large amounts of live tissue and skeleton fromPorites lobata. Acanthaster planci is present, but rare. The grazing of large diadematid sea urchins, (2 species each ofDiadema andEchinothrix) on dead corals cause extensive erosion in some areas. Large numbers of corals on the 15–18 m terrace had recently suffered partial (P. lobata, 60–70% maximum of all colonies sampled) or total (Pocillopora sp., 80% maximum) mortality. The lengths of regenerating knobs and the rates of linear skeletal growth inP. lobata, determined by sclerochronologic analysis, indicated a period of stress during 1987. Massive skeletal growth is significantly higher at intermediate (16–17 m) than shallow (6–8 m) depths with mean extension rates of 1.5 mm yr–1 inP. lobata and 1.4 mm yr–1 inP. minuta at intermediate depths. Skeletal growth inP. lobata was depressed during the 1987 El Nifio event at Clipperton. The branching coralPocillopora sp. demonstrated high and similar skeletal growth rates at both shallow (25.4 mm yr–1) and intermediate (26.5 mm yr–1) depths. The presence of widely distributed Indo-Pacific zooxanthellate corals at Clipperton and the Revillagigedo Islands indicates that these NE Pacific Islands probably serve as a stepping stone for dispersal into the far eastern Pacific region.  相似文献

Coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) that form rhodoliths are important ecosystem engineers and carbonate producers in many polar coastal habitats. This study deals with rhodolith communities from Floskjeret (78°18′N), Krossfjorden (79°08′N), and Mosselbukta (79°53′N), off Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. Strong seasonal variations in temperature, salinity, light regime, sea-ice coverage, and turbidity characterize these localities. The coralline algal flora consists of Lithothamnion glaciale and Phymatolithon tenue. Well-developed rhodoliths were recorded between 27 and 47 m water depth, while coralline algal encrustations on lithoclastic cobbles were detected down to 77 m water depth. At all sites, ambient waters were saturated with respect to both aragonite and calcite, and the rhodolith beds were located predominately at dysphotic water depths. The rhodolith-associated macrobenthic fauna included grazing organisms such as chitons and echinoids. With decreasing water depth, the rhodolith pavements were regularly overgrown by non-calcareous Polysiphonia-like red algae. The corallines are thriving and are highly specialized in their adaptations to the physical environment as well as in their interaction with the associated benthic fauna, which is similar to other polar rhodolith communities. The marine environment of Spitsbergen is already affected by a climate-driven ecological regime shift and will lead to an increased borealization in the near future, with presently unpredictable consequences for coralline red algal communities.  相似文献

Summary Juvenile sea hares, Aplysia californica, utilize only the red algae Plocamium cartilagineum and Laurencia pacifica as host plants at Santa Catalina Island, CA. I tested three hypotheses which might account for this pattern of host choice: 1) A. californica specialize on the algae on which they grow best, 2) A. california specialize on algae from which they acquire secondary compounds that protect them from predators, and 3) A. californica specialize on certain algae in order to lower their encounter rates with predators. The results suggested that host range in the Aplysia californica system is affected by more than one factor. The first hypothesis was supported. A. californica of three size classes grew well on Plocamium, but could not grow at all on most other species of algae. Larger A. californica were able to grow on species of algae that smaller ones could not. The second hypothesis was also supported. Small A. californica grown on Plocamium were rich in terpenes. Small A. californica grown on Ulva sp. were terpene-free. Rock wrasses, Halichoeres semicinctus, were more likely to eat Ulva-fed A. californica than Plocamium-fed A. californica. Other fish and lobster, Panulirus interruptus, did not discriminate between the two groups. Kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus, which were force-fed Ulva-fed A. californica regurgitated them less often, and after digesting them more completely, than did Paralabrax force-fed Plocamium-fed A. californica. The third hypothesis was rejected. A. californica located on Plocamium were not more cryptic to the opisthobranch Aglaja inermis (navanax), or to the pomacentrid fish, Hypsypops rubicundus, than were A. californica located on other algae. In addition, navanax, a specialist predator of opisthobranchs, was significantly more abundant on Plocamium than on other algae.  相似文献

Studies of east Antarctic marine assemblages on hard substrata are rare. In relation to sea-ice breakout, we assessed benthic patterns of habitat and inhabitants between islands and bays at each of two depths (6 and 12 m) across the Windmill Islands coast. Island sites experience sea-ice breakout in the austral spring, while bay sites typically retain sea-ice cover into the summer and in some places the cover is virtually permanent. Composition of assemblages differed between sheltered bays and exposed islands. Islands were dominated by macroalgae, which also varied with depth. Immediately below the ice–foot zone at 6 m, substratum space were monopolised by foliose red (Palmaria decipiens) and foliose brown (Desmarestia sp.) algae, whereas at 12 m large canopies of Himantothallus grandifolius was abundant. The understorey consisted of a mixture of turfs and encrusting red algae at 6 m, and coralline algae at 12 m. Sheltered bays had large areas of sediment/algal complex and no canopy-forming macroalgae. We found more sponges and hydroids in bays, and more brittle stars around islands. Experiments testing factors that covary with exposure and depth in Antarctica, such as light, sedimentation and ice scour are necessary to determine processes that maintain these striking patterns.  相似文献

Kalk Bay, South Africa, has a typical south coast zonation pattern with a band of seaweed dominating the mid-eulittoral and between two molluscan-herbivore dominated upper and lower eulittoral zones. Encrusting coralline algae were very obvious features of these zones. The most abundant herbivores in the upper eulittoral were the limpet, Cymbula oculus (10.4 ± 1.6 individuals m−2; 201.65 ± 32.68 g.m−2) and the false limpet, Siphonaria capensis (97.07± 19.92 individuals m−2; 77.93 16.02 g.m−2). The territorial gardening limpet, Scutellastra cochlear, dominated the lower eulittoral zone, achieving very high densities (545.27 ± 84.35 m−2) and biomass (4630.17 ± 556.13 g.m−2), and excluded all other herbivores and most seaweeds, except for its garden alga and the encrusting coralline alga, Spongites yendoi (35.93 ± 2.26% cover). In the upper eulittoral zone, encrusting coralline algae were only present in the guts of the chiton Acanthochiton garnoti (30.5 ± 1.33%) and the limpet C. oculus (2.9 ± 0.34%). The lower eulittoral zone limpet, Scutellastra cochlear also had a large percentage of encrusting coralline algae in its gut with limpets lacking gardens having higher (45.1 ± 1.68%) proportions of coralline algae in their guts than those with gardens (25.6 ± 0.8%). Encrusting coralline algae had high organic contents, similar to those of other encrusting and turf-forming algae, but higher organic contents than foliose algae. Radula structure, grazing frequencies as a percentage of the area grazed (upper eulittoral 73.25 ± 3.60% d−1; lower eulittoral 46.0 ± 3.29% d−1), and algal organic content provided evidence to support the dietary habits of the above herbivores. The data show that many intertidal molluscs are actively consuming encrusting coralline algae and that these seaweeds should be seen as an important food source.  相似文献

Experiments in the subtidal zone of the southeastern coast of Korea examined the role of competition in determining the upper limit of perennial kelp, Ecklonia stolonifera, which is a dominant species in the subtidal community, but rarely found shallower than 5 m depth. Replicate clearings of dense algal turfs simulating natural disturbance at 1 and 3 m depth zones showed that E. stolonifera is able to settle and develop adult sporophytes in the upper zone. However, these adult sporophytes were eventually excluded from the clearings within one year after clearing. Two-year succession patterns at the clearings fell into three sequential categories: E. stolonifera and polychaete worms (Serpula vermicularis Linnaeus), mussels (Mytilus edulis Linnaeus), and turf-forming algae. A competitor removal treatment revealed that competition with M. edulis for primary space is the direct cause resulting in exclusion of E. stolonifera from the clearings. Recolonization of E. stolonifera after exclusion did not occur at clearings due to preemptive competition with other sessile organisms, which occupied 75-99% of bottom cover during the reproduction period of E. stolonifera (Autumn). Algal turfs, the final colonizer of the clearings, recovered more than 80% of bottom cover within 10 months after exclusion of M. edulis, and their species composition and abundance were not significantly different to those of adjacent controls. Experiments using artificial substrata showed that recruitment of E. stolonifera from spores is essentially impossible on the plates occupied by other sessile organisms (>86% cover). These results indicate that preemptive competition with dense algal turfs for the settlement and competition with M. edulis for survival in the course of succession are two most important factors determining the vertical distribution limits of E. stolonifera.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were used to examine how variation in the density of spore settlement influences gametophyte growth, reproduction, and subsequent sporophyte production in the kelps Pterygophora californica Ruprecht and Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. In still (non-aerated) cultures, egg maturation in both species was delayed when spores were seeded at densities 300 · mm?2. Although the density at which this inhibition was first observed was similar for both species, the age at which their eggs matured was not. P. californica females reached sexual maturity an average of 4 days (or ~ 30%) sooner than did M, pyrifera. As observed previously in field experiments, per capita sporophyte production was negatively density dependent for both species when seeded at spore densities of 10 · mm?2. Total sporophyte production (i.e. number · cm?2) for both species, however, was greatest at intermediate densities of spore settlement (~ 50 spores · mm?2). In contrast, total sporophyte production by P. californica steadily increased with increasing spore density in aerated cultures; highest sporophyte density was observed on slides seeded at a density of 1000 spores · mm?2. Preliminary experiments with P. californica involving manipulation of aeration and nutrients indicate that inhibition of gametophyte growth and reproduction at higher densities of spore settlement in non-aerated cultures was probably caused by nutrient limitation.  相似文献
