Recently collected specimens of Armodoris from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, were morphologically examined and sequenced. Comparison between this new material and literature sources revealed that it belongs to an undescribed species, Armodoris anudeorum. Although this new species is externally very similar to Armodoris antarctica (the only previously known species of Armodoris), these two species differ in several details of their external morphology, and particularly in their reproductive anatomy and radular morphology. This is the second known species of Armodoris; thus, this paper doubles the known diversity of this exclusively Antarctic group.  相似文献

The densities of populations of Nerita atramentosa Reeve, Austrocochlea constricta Lamarck, Bembiciuin nanum (Lamarck), and Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) were recorded in 0.25 m2 quadrats on landward and seaward halves of a sheltered and a moderately exposed rock platform from June 1972 to June 1973. The data have been subjected to variance and multiple regression analysis. Differences between densities of each species on the two shores and in the two areas of each shore are discussed with respect to the regressions on littoral height. Densities of Nerita on the sheltered shore, Austrocochlea and Bembicium on both shores, and Cellana, on the exposed shore, increased with height. The density of Cellana on the sheltered shore decreased as height increased. The density differences in the landward and seaward areas on the two shores were attributable to the effect of height for Nerita and Austrocochlea. Height was the major variable affecting the density of these two species on the sheltered shore. Bembicium and Cellana densities on both shores, and Austrocochlea density on the exposed shore, are not primarily determined by height.On the sheltered shore, Nerita and Cellana increased in density with increasing cover of water in rock pools. On the exposed shore, Bembicium and Cellana became sparser with increasing water cover. Bembicium on both shores increased in density with increasing cover of the alga Peyssonelia, as did Cellana on the exposed shore. Cellana and Austrocochlea tended to increase in density with Nerita on the sheltered shore. Cellana tended to be sparse where Bembicium was dense on the exposed shore. The biological effects of substrata and other species on the densities of each species remain unexplained.Significant time effects were found for variations in the densities of Nerita and Cellana on the sheltered shore and of Austrocochlea and Cellana on the exposed shore. The seasonal change in density of Nerita was parabolic with a minimum in summer, and is consistent with the known period of recruitment of this species. The lack of significant time effects on density of Austrocochlea on the sheltered shore is consistent with the known continuous recruitment of this species. The declining density of Austrocochlea on the moderately exposed shore was found, by size-frequency analysis, to be due to reduced recruitment compared with surrounding shores. The density of Cellana on both shores showed seasonal changes, with a maximum in summer, which is consistent with the known period of recruitment in Cellana. The lack of seasonal changes in density of Bembicium is briefly discussed.This type of multifactor analysis identifies biological interactions affecting variation in density of these species. It also corroborates the results of other ecological investigations and determines the relative importance of a variety of physical and biological factors in the distribution of density of intertidal gastropods.  相似文献

We investigated the modulatory role of a radular mechanoreceptor (RM) in the feeding system of Incilaria. RM spiking induced by current injection evoked several cycles of rhythmic buccal motor activity in quiescent preparations, and this effect was also observed in preparations lacking the cerebral ganglia. The evoked rhythmic activity included sequential activation of the inframedian radular tensor, the supramedian radular tensor, and the buccal sphincter muscles in that order.In addition to the generation of rhythmic motor activity, RM spiking enhanced tonic activities in buccal nerve 1 as well as in the cerebrobuccal connective, showing a wide excitatory effect on buccal neurons. The excitatory effect was further examined in the supramedian radular tensor motoneuron. RM spiking evoked biphasic depolarization in the tensor motoneuron consisting of fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials and prolonged depolarization lasting after termination of RM spiking. These depolarizations also occurred in high divalent cation saline, suggesting that they were both monosynaptic.When RM spiking was evoked in the fictive rasp phase during food-induced buccal motor rhythm, the activity of the supramedian radular tensor muscle showed the greatest enhancement of the three muscles tested, while the rate of ongoing rhythmic motor activity showed no increase.Abbreviations CPG central pattern generator - EPSP excitatory postsynaptic potential - RBMA rhythmic buccal motor activity - RM radular mechanosensory neuron - SMT supramedian radular tensor neuron  相似文献

Summary Field experiments were undertaken on the intertidal gastropod Bembicium auratum, which is one of the dominant organisms in sheltered bays and mangroves in New South Wales. Animals were caged at various densities ranging from natural levels to about four times normal density. Increased density resulted in increased mortality (particularly of juveniles), reduced body weight, and (less conclusively) a decline in growth rate. Chlorophyll levels of the mangrove mud within the cages were monitored as an index of food availability, and increased rapidly in the control cages in the absence of Bembicium, remained steady at normal Bembicium densities, and declined at higher densities. Parallel experiments were conducted on the effects of substratum on Bembicium. One series of animals was allowed access to a hard substratum and the other only to mud. Body weights and survivorship were proportionally lower in animals deprived of a hard substratum. Juveniles were particularly susceptible to a shortage of food and more dependent on a hard substratum than adults. The population structure also suggests a high juvenile mortality but high adult survival and longevity. Bembicium is very abundant low on the shore but numbers decline and body weights increase higher up. Chlorophyll levels and amounts of hard substratum also decline up the shore. Possibly juveniles settle selectively (or survive better) low on the shore where oysters provide a dense hard substratum. Adults are less dependent on the hard substratum and may disperse up the shore, explaining the patterns of abundance and size.As Bembicium limits its own food supply and seemingly is limited by it, predation is unlikely to play an important role in restricting population density.  相似文献

Radular teeth of 22 Indo-Pacific species of the genus Conus(Neogastropoda: Toxoglossa) were compared. On morphologicalfeatures all can be related to one of three known feeding modes:piscivorous, vermivorous and molluscivorous. Observations arereported on the radular teeth of six piscivores, thirteen vermivoresand three molluscivores. The radular teeth of piscivores areof two general types. In the first, two barbs and a posteriorly-directedprocess with a recurved tip are found at the anterior end. Inthe second, two barbs are located at the anterior end and theshaft is serrated for most of its length. An enlarged posteriorregion (terminal knob) is present in the first and absent inthe second. Molluscivores possess radular teeth with two anteriorbarbs and in some species a serrated shaft or terminal knob.The radular teeth of vermivores, which show much greater interspecificvariation than those of piscivores or molluscivores, are characterizedby one or two anterior barbs and in most species a serratedregion near the apex. A forwardly-projecting cone (basal spur)is usually located on the terminal knob. Piscivores and molluscivoreslack such basal spurs. The radular teeth of Conus are used toconvey a potent venom and hold prey firmly during feeding. Previouslyundescribed morphological features are noted on the teeth ofC. obscurus and C. lividus. The reproductive system and radular morphology of several specimens of Doris collected in the Antarctic Ocean were examined in an attempt to clarify the taxonomic status of Doris kerguelenensis and its possible synonym Doris georgiensis. A comparative analysis of the samples was conducted to find correlations between the anatomy of the bursa copulatrix and variations in the radular morphology and external features of these two species. Some consistent differences were found, suggesting the possibility of the existence of two distinct species, but further investigations are necessary to substantiate these conclusions.  相似文献

A radular mechanosensory neuron, RM, was identified in the buccal ganglia of Incilaria fruhstorferi. Fine neurites ramified bilaterally in the buccal ganglia, and main neurites entered the subradular epithelium via buccal nerve 3 (n3). When the radula was distorted by bending, RM produced an afferent spike which was preceded by an axonic spike recorded at n3. The response of RM to radular distortion was observed even in the absence of Ca2+, which drastically suppressed chemical synaptic interactions. Therefore, RM was concluded to be a primary radular mechanoreceptor.During rhythmic buccal motor activity induced by food or electrical stimulation of the cerebrobuccal connective, RM received excitatory input during the radular retraction phase. In the isolated buccal ganglia connected to the radula via n3s, the afferent spike, which had been evoked by electrical stimulation of the subradular epithelium, was broadened with the phasic excitatory input. Since the afferent spike was also broadened by current injection into the soma, depolarization due to the phasic input may have produced the spike broadening.Spike broadening was also observed during repetitive firing evoked by current injection. The taxonomy of common northern nudibranch molluscs of the genus Dendronotus in the vast cold regions of Eurasia remains largely unknown. Abundant material collected in many localities from the Barents Sea, via the Arctic region, to the north‐west Pacific was analysed for the first time. An integrated approach combining morphological and ontogenetic data with molecular four‐gene (COI, 16S, H3, and 28S) analysis reveals seven species, including three previously undescribed. Dendronotus frondosus (Ascanius, 1774) and Dendronotus dalli Bergh, 1879 were commonly considered as amphiboreal species; however, according to this study they are restricted to the North Atlantic and the North Pacific, respectively. In the north‐west Pacific two new species were discovered, D endronotus kamchaticus sp. nov. and D endronotus kalikal sp. nov. , that are externally similar to D. frondosus, but that show significant distance according to molecular analysis and are considerably different in radular morphology. In the North Atlantic a new species D endronotus niveus sp. nov. , sibling to North Pacific D. dalli, is revealed. The separate status of North Atlantic Dendronotus lacteus (Thompson, 1840) is confirmed, including considerable range extension. The essential similarity of early ontogenetic stages of radular development common for species with disparate adult radular morphology (such as D. frondosus and D. dalli) is shown, and its importance for taxonomy is discussed. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Direct development and water dependence entail limited vagility in freshwater fauna. In these organisms, the population structure is probably linked to restrictions imposed by the habitat. In this study we investigate the relative contribution of processes stimulating the divergence of populations of Biomphalaria costata (Biese, 1951) and Biomphalaria crequii (Courty, 1907), two freshwater snails occurring in two contiguous and fragmented closed basins from the Andean Altiplano using mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) sequences, shell morphometric and radular morphology. In order to clarify the species boundaries, a third allopatric species was included: Biomphalaria aymara Valdovinos & Stuardo, 1991. Molecular analyses recovered two distinct clades: one composed of B. aymara from the Isluga swamps and B. costata from Spring 1 in Salar de Carcote, the single spring occupied by this species, and another integrated by snails from 12 springs spread across the Salar de Carcote and the Salar de Ascotán assigned to B. crequii, originally described from the Salar de Ascotán. Unlike shell morphometrics, radular morphology was informative for distinguishing these species. The division of the lineages occurred in the Late Pleistocene. A subclade that includes snails from the southernmost springs in Salar de Ascotán suggests fragmentation of the distribution of B. crequii associated with landscape discontinuities. In addition to microvicariance signals, the private haplotypes scattered around both salt spans show that close‐range dispersal is a common biogeographic process in this species. Developing effective and eco‐friendly antimicrobials and pesticides has become a highly important issue. The repellent, insecticidal and antimicrobial activity of essential oils (EOs) isolated by hydrodistillation from dried leaves of the three Eucalyptus species (E. cloeziana, E. umbellata and E. benthamii) were investigated. During GC/MS analysis, α‐pinene (47.36 %), 1,8‐cineol (38.53 %) and α‐pinene (35.31 %) were identified as major components of E. cloeziana, E. umbellata and E. benthamii, respectively. The EOs from E. cloeziana exhibited the longest effective protection time (465 min, at 50.0 % w/w) for humans among the EOs studied. The effective protection time was 30 min and 300 min at concentrations of 12.5 % (w/w) and 25.0 % (w/w), respectively. Fumigating insecticidal activity of EOs from three Eucalyptus species was tested by airtight fumigation in conical flask, which indicated that essential oils had a highly and rapidly insecticidal activity on Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus. The antimicrobial activity of EOs was evaluated by using disc diffusion and agar dilution methods. There was no significant difference in the antibacterial activity of EOs from E. cloeziana and E. umbellate and they had the same MICs (20 mL/L) on Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. E. benthamii had the worst microbial inhibitory effect among the three Eucalyptus essential oils and the MIC value for the test species is 40 mL/L except for Rhodotorula Harrison (10 mL/L).  相似文献

Improved understanding of coccinellid activity and predation on aphids in the field could clarify their potential in aphid biological control. Our objective was to determine the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on activity and predation by adults of three coccinellid species (Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville, H. tredecimpunctata tibialis (Say), and Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer) in spring cereal fields. The proportion of time coccinellids spent searching was correlated with air temperature, aphid density, and time of day. The relationship between searching and these variables differed among species. Mean walking speed ranged from 66.4 cm/min for C. maculata to 83.2 cm/min for H. tredecimpunctata and increased with temperature for all species. The frequency of short flights (<2 m) by beetles increased with temperature and decreased with increasing aphid density for all species, but the relationship of short flight frequency to these variables differed among species. The frequency of long flights (>2 m) was similar for all species and influenced by temperature and calendar date. The frequencies with which aphids were encountered and eaten were correlated with aphid density and temperature for H. convergens and H. tredecimpunctata. Despite over 250 h spent observing adult coccinellid behavior in the field, predation data were insufficient to develop a useful predation model.  相似文献

We used multiple analytical methods to demonstrate resource partitioning in five species of coexisting endemic gastropods in the family Baicaliidae and the genus Megalovalvata (Valvatidae) in rocky walls of the underwater canyons in Lake Baikal. We tested whether filter-feeding baicaliids and valvatids consume and assimilate different food using data from gut contents, stable δ13C and δ15N isotopes and radular morphology, with subsequent combined analyses. Our results showed that the four baicaliid species assimilate microalgae, diatoms and bacteria, whereas the single Megalovalvata species mostly assimilates plant detritus. The δ15N variations in the baicaliids reflect differences in their digestion of seston components, whereas the δ13C similarity illustrates consumption of food particles derived from similar primary producers. Gut contents in the baicaliids were dominated by a single species of planktonic diatom, although more than 30 species of microalgae were recorded in all seasons. However, the composition and quantity of additional food particles varied by species. Our results showed that baicaliids have significant fine scale differences in radular tooth morphology, which may allow partitioning of food resources.  相似文献

Summary The patterns of dispersion of Nerita atramentosa, Austrocochlea constricta, Bembicium nanum and Cellana tramoserica are analysed from quadrat samples taken between June 1972 and June 1973. In each quadrat, the proportion of animals in each of two substrata, the encrusting alga Peyssonelia gunniana and small pools, was recorded, with the proportional area of cover of each substratum, height on the shore, density of the species and the time of sampling. Multiple regression and covariance analysis showed that, in all cases, there was a linear relationship between proportion in a substratum and proportional area of substratum. No other variables were significant.Juvenile Nerita and Austrocochlea showed preferences for both substrata. Adult Nerita and all Bembicium were dispersed at random with respect to both substrata. Adult Austrocochlea were randomly dispersed with respect to Peyssonelia, but showed a preference for water. Cellana showed a preference for water and against Peyssonelia. These microhabitat preferences are discussed in relation to previously described effects of substrata on the densities of these four species.  相似文献

Dissections were performed to document buccal anatomy in three species of the pulmonate genus Helisoma Swainson, 1840. The 28 muscles which are responsible for radular feeding in these animals are organized in three concentric and integrated envelopes. The deepest of these includes muscles which manipulate the radula about the odontophoral cartilage. Elements of the middle envelope direct movements of the cartilage within the buccal cavity, and muscles of the outer envelope control movements of the buccal mass within the cephalic haemocoel. Motion analysis by videomicrography showed that muscles of the middle and outer envelopes contribute to the action of radular feeding by acting as antagonists to other muscles and to hydrostatic elements of the buccal apparatus. Observations of radular dentition showed that although each of the three species examined has a unique radula, especially with regard to the specific details of tooth shape, all resemble a radula characteristic of the Planorbidae with regard to other, more general, aspects of ribbon architecture.  相似文献

Summary Mechanical responses of the radular protractor and retractor, the odontophore retractor and the radular sac muscles ofBusycon canaliculatum were compared. The radular protractor responded to both ACh and high K salines with similar slow, smooth contractures showing no evidence of fast twitch activity. The radular sac, odontophore retractor, and radular retractor muscles responded to low K salines with bursts of fast twitches at a mechanical threshold below that for responses in the radular protractor. With high K salines these three muscles showed inactivation of fast twitch activity and replacement by slow maintained tonic force. With rare exceptions, the ACh responses of all four muscles consisted of slow, maintained tonic contractures with no fast twitch activity, although individual muscles differed in their ACh sensitivity. A scheme is presented to explain the mechanical modus operandi of this complex organ by the co-operative actions of these four physiologically diverse muscles. It is proposed that fast twitch responses depend upon the activity of fast transient Ca channels showing strong voltage sensitivity and ready voltage inactivation. It is proposed that maintained tonic contractures in all the muscles depends upon the activity of slow long-lasting voltage-dependent Ca channels which only open with substantial membrane depolarization. It is suggested that K-induced and ACh-induced responses may activate a similar cellular Ca pool but by different membrane transduction routes.  相似文献

Background: Children living at high altitude in San Antonio de los Cobres (SAC), Argentina, were shown to have lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than Buenos Aires (BA) children. HDL antioxidant capacity is mainly attributed to paraoxonase1 (PON1).

Objective: To compare PON1 activity in indigenous SAC vs. BA children.

Methods: A cross-sectional study compared 158 SAC vs. 97 BA children (6–16 years). Anthropometric data and lipoprotein profile were measured. PON1 was evaluated employing paraoxon (PON) and phenylacetate (ARE) activity.

Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity was lower in SAC than in BA children (18.3 vs. 30.9%). Triglycerides (1.34 vs. 0.90?mmol/l), apo B (0.84 vs.0.72?g/l), apo A-I (1.33 vs. 1.27?g/l), and ARE activity (100 vs. 90?µmol/ml/min) were higher, while HDL-C (1.16 vs. 1.32?mmol/l) and PON activity (170 vs. 203?nmol/ml/min) were lower in SAC than in BA. Separate multiple linear regression analyses showed that SAC children had significantly higher triglyceride (Beta ?0.38), apo B (Beta ?0.34), and ARE (Beta ?0.36) plus lower HDL-C (Beta 0.33) and PON (Beta 0.25) compared with BA; adjusted for age, gender, and BMI.

Conclusion: SAC showed an unfavorable lipoprotein profile, lower PON and higher ARE activities compared with BA children, suggesting the presence of altered HDL metabolism and antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

A simple and rapid HPLC-based method was developed for simultaneous determination of major classes of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in Monostroma and different species of Ulva. The plant growth regulators determined included gibberellic acid (GA3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), salicylic acid and kinetin riboside (KR) and their respective elution time was 2.75, 3.3, 3.91, 4.95, 5.39 and 6.59 min. The parameters optimized for distinct separation of PGRs were mobile phase (60:40 methanol and 0.6% acetic acid in water), column temperature (35 °C) and flow rate (1 ml/min). This method presented an excellent linearity (0.2–100 μg/ml) with limit of detection (LOD) as 0.2 μg/ml for ABA, 0.5 μg/ml for KR and salicylic acid, and 1 μg/ml for IAA, IBA and GA3. The precision and accuracy of the method was evaluated after inter and intra day analysis in triplicates. The effect of plant matrix was compensated after spiking and the resultant recoveries estimated were in the range of 80–120%. Each PGR thereby detected were further characterized by ESI-MS analysis. The method optimized in this study determined IBA along with IAA for the first time in the seaweed species investigated except Ulva linza where the former was not detected. In all the species studied, ABA level was detected to be the highest while kinetin riboside was the lowest. In comparison to earlier methods of PGR analysis, sample preparation and analysis time were substantially reduced while allowing determination of more classes of PGRs simultaneously.  相似文献

Summary The patterns of dispersion of Nerita atramentosa, Bembicium nanum and Cellana tramoserica within two major substrata, the encrusting alga Peyssonelia gunniana and bare rock were analysed from quadrat samples taken at low tide, over 1 year. Distances to the nearest members of each species from random points were analysed to determine spatial patterns of dispersion. The frequencies of nearest neighbours of each species to each animal in the sampled area were analysed to determine the degree of spatial segregation and symmetry in the three species. Nerita atramentosa and Bembicium nanum showed significant aggregated (clumped) dispersion in both substrata. Cellana tramoserica, however, was dispersed at random on Peyssonelia, and regularly dispersed on bare rock. There was no correlation between index of dispersion and density, or time of year, in any species. No useful tests for segregation and symmetry between Cellana and the other two species could be made because of the difference in dispersion of this species. Nerita and Bembicium were significantly segregated on both substrata, indicating that the microhabitat requirements of the two species are different. The two species were symmetrical on both substrata, indicating that there is no tendency for members of one species to be more isolated than members of the other species.Possible explanations of the differences in spatial pattern shown by the three species are discussed, and experimentally testable hypotheses are proposed to clarify the importance of physical and biological factors in the spatial patterns of distribution of the three species.  相似文献

Nitrogen-free, semi-solid defined medium with crystallized cane sugar (100 g/l) supplemented with cane juice (5 ml/l) was the most selective for isolating Acetobacter diazotrophicus. Surveys of A. diazotrophicus using this medium showed that >103 cells/g fresh wt were present at all sites in all parts of the sugar cane plant and in all trash samples examined, reaching up to 107/g. Additional samples, from forage grasses and cereals and from weed species collected within the sugar cane fields, were all negative. Heat treatment (50°C for 30 min) of the sugar cane setts did not affect A. diazotrophicus numbers within the plant. Nitrogenase activity of intact soil-plant systems in pots planted with heat-treated setts did not respond to inoculation with A. diazotrophicus. The radula is the basic feeding structure in gastropod molluscs and exhibits great morphological diversity that reflects the exceptional anatomical and ecological diversity occurring in these animals. This uniquely molluscan structure is formed in the blind end of the radular sac by specialized cells (membranoblasts and odontoblasts). Secretion type, and the number and shape of the odontoblasts that form each tooth characterize the mode of radula formation. These characteristics vary in different groups of gastropods. Elucidation of this diversity is key to identifying the main patterns of radula formation in Gastropoda. Of particular interest would be a phylogenetically closely related group that is characterized by high variability of the radula. One such group is the large monophyletic superfamily Conoidea, the radula of which is highly variable and may consist of the radular membrane with five teeth per row, or the radular membrane with only two or three teeth per row, or even just two harpoon-like teeth per row without a radular membrane. We studied the radulae of two species of Conoidea (Clavus maestratii Kilburn, Fedosov & Kantor, 2014 [Drilliidae] and, Lophiotoma acuta (Perry, 1811) [Turridae]) using light and electron microscopy. Based on these data and previous studies, we identify the general patterns of the radula formation for all Conoidea: the dorsolateral position of two groups of odontoblasts, uniform size, and shape of odontoblasts, folding of the radula in the radular sac regardless of the radula configuration. The morphology of the subradular epithelium is most likely adaptive to the radula type.  相似文献
