Patterns of fecal reproductive steroid metabolites and adrenal corticoids were characterized for 12‐ to 24‐month periods in black (n = 10 male, 16 female) and white (n = 6 male, 13 female) rhinoceroses at 14 institutions. All black rhinoceros females exhibited at least some ovarian cyclicity on the basis of fecal progestogen analysis (range, 2–12 cycles/yr). However, cycles often were erratic, with many being shorter (<20 days; 18% of cycles) or longer (>32 days; 21%) than the average of 26.8 ± 0.5 days (n = 104 cycles). Five females exhibited periods of acyclicity of 2–10‐month duration that were unrelated to season. One complete and seven partial pregnancies were evaluated in the black rhinoceros. Fecal progestogens increased over luteal phase concentrations after 3 months of gestation. Females resumed cyclicity within 3 months postpartum, before calves were weaned (n = 5). Approximately half of white rhinoceros females (6 of 13) showed no evidence of ovarian cyclicity. Of the cycles observed, 5 were “short” (32.8 ± 1.2 days) and 24 were “long” (70.1 ± 1.6 days). Only two females cycled continuously throughout the study. One had both long (n = 9) and short (n = 2) cycles, whereas the other exhibited long cycles only (n = 5). Fecal estrogen excretion was variable, and profiles were not useful for characterizing follicular activity or diagnosing pregnancy in either species. Males of both species showed no evidence of seasonality on the basis of fecal androgen profiles. Androgen metabolite concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in the black (27.6 ± 6.9 ng/g) than in the white (16.8 ± 3.1 ng/g) rhinoceros. An adrenocorticotropin hormone challenge in four black rhinoceros males demonstrated that the clearance rate of corticoid metabolites into feces was ~24 hours. Fecal corticoid concentrations did not differ between males and females, but overall means were higher in the black (41.8 ± 3.1 ng/g) than in the white (31.2 ± 1.7 ng/g) rhinoceros. In summary, fecal steroid analysis identified a number of differences in hormonal secretory dynamics between the black and white rhinoceros that may be related to differences in reproductive rates in captivity. Most black rhinoceros females exhibited some cyclic ovarian activity. In contrast, few white rhinoceroses demonstrated evidence of regular estrous cyclicity, and those females that were active had comparatively long cycles. Results also suggest that fecal corticoid concentrations reflect adrenal activity and may be species specific. Continued studies are needed to determine whether fecal corticoid measurements will be useful for understanding the cause of inconsistent gonadal activity in these two species. Because all but three (15.8%) of the white rhinoceroses evaluated in this study were less than 20 years of age compared to 73.1% (19 of 26) of the black rhinoceroses, the impact of age on reproductive and adrenal activity also needs to be evaluated further. Sea World has maintained killer whales (Orcinus orca) since 1965. The total killer whale inventory (1965–1993) has included 39 whales (25 females, 14 males); 28 were wild-caught and 11 captive-born, including one second-generation calf. As of September, 1993, there were 19 whales in the breeding program. Ten of these whales (53%) were captive-born, either at Sea World or other facilities in North America. The live wild-caught whales ranged in estimated age from 12–27 years (x? ± sd = 17.6 ± 4.2 years). The captive-born whales ranged in age from <1 to 8 years. In the Sea World breeding program (through September, 1993), there have been nine live births and one stillbirth, with eight calves part of the current inventory. Births occurred from July to February. Calving intervals ranged from 32–58 months. Female age at birth of first calves ranged from 8 years to an estimated 17 years (x? ± sd = 12.7 ± 3.0 years). Gestation, based on conception estimates from serum progesterone analysis, averaged 17 months (x? ± sd = 517 ± 20 days), but successful pregnancies with viable calves occurred from 15–18 months (468–539 days). Females, in the presence and absence of males, were polyestrus with periods of cycling interspersed with individually variable noncycling (presumed anestrous) periods ranging from 3–16 months. Reproductive data compiled from the International Clouded Leopard Studbook revealed that 75% of all litters were born to females between one and five years of age. Sixty-three percent of the males had sired litters by four years of age with reproduction declining after six years of age. Sixteen zoological institutions surveyed worldwide contributed estrous cycle data from 28 clouded leopards. Sexual maturity (age at first estrus) for these females ranged from 17 to 28 months of age with a mean estrous cycle length of 29.9 ± 13.8 days. The mean length of estrus was six days. Gestation length ranged from 85 to 121 days (X? = 93.4 ± 6.3). There was a significantly higher incidence of estrus in fall and winter compared with spring and summer over latitudes ranging from 36°–45° and 51°–55° (P < .005). Mating occurred in all months except June and October, and cubs were produced in all months except December. The highest frequency of mating occurred during the month of December corresponding with a birth peak in March.  相似文献

The reproductive physiology of nine Galápagos tortoises (Geochelone nigra) was studied from February 1988 to May 1989. The study encompassed the annual reproductive cycle to include complete mating and nesting sequences. Male (n = 4) and female (n = 5) seasonal reproductive changes were determined throughout the study with endocrine analysis and ultrasonographic examinations. Males displayed a prenuptial rise in serum testosterone (x― ±SE = 6.62 ± 0.92 ng/ml in August) during which gonadal maturation and spermatogenesis are thought to occur. The male reproductive cycle appears consistent with the prenuptial spermatogenic pattern exhibited by other tropical turtles. In the females, testosterone rose during the mating period (x― ± SE = 499.3 ± 124.6 pg/ml in October) prior to ovulation and is probably related to receptivity in the females. Progesterone was more variable, but also peaked during the mating period (x― ± SE = 1,017.2 ± 220.6 pg/ml in October) and appears related to ovulation. Estradiol rose several months prior to mating (x― ± SE = 75.5 ± 11.9 pg/ml in July) and was correlated with increased serum calcium levels. This increase in estradiol is thought to stimulate vitellogenesis several months prior to mating. Nesting occurred from November 1988 to April 1989, during which six clutches were laid. Clutch size ranged from eight to 17 eggs. Both male and female Galápagos tortoises display seasonal physiological changes that function to regulate annual reproductive patterns. Resting idioventricular rates were determined in dogs with chronic A–V block (n=6) starting from 10–14 days after production of heart block and continuing until 18–88 days had elapsed. The ratio of heart weight to body weight was significantly greater (P <0.01) in dogs with A–V block (8.84 ± 0.52 g/kg) than in sham operated controls (7.11 ± 0.20 g/kg) which were quartered for the same periods of time prior to sacrifice. A prominent new finding in this study was that cardiac hypertrophy associated with A–V block was significantly (P <0.01) and inversely correlated (r= ?0.92) to the idioventricular rate.  相似文献

This work investigates life‐history traits of the long‐nosed skate Dipturus oxyrinchus, which is a common by‐catch in Sardinian waters. The reproductive variables were analysed from 979 specimens sampled during scientific and commercial hauls. Females (10·4–117·5 cm total length, LT) attained larger sizes than males (14·5–99·5 cm LT). To evaluate age and growth, a sub‐sample of 130 individuals (76 females and 54 males) were used. The age was estimated by annuli counts of sectioned vertebral centra. Four models were used for the length‐at‐age data: the von Bertalanffy, the exponential, the Gompertz and the logistic functions. According to the Akaike's information criterion, the Gompertz model seemed to provide the best fitting curve (L mean ± s.e. : 127·55 ± 4·90 cm, k: 0·14 ± 0·09, IP: 3·97 ± 0·90 years). The oldest female and male were aged 17 (115·5 cm LT) and 15 years (96·0 cm LT), respectively. Lengths at maturity were 103·5 cm for females and 91·0 cm for males, corresponding to 90% of the maximum observed length in both sexes. The monthly distribution of maturity stages highlighted an extended reproductive cycle, with spawning females and active males being present almost throughout the year, as confirmed by the gonado‐somatic index. Ovarian fecundity reached a maximum of 26 yolked follicles with a mean ± s.e. size of 19·7 ± 6·5 mm.  相似文献

Serum samples were collected 1–3 times weekly from two Baird's tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) for 6 months in 1987–1988, and for more than 3 consecutive years beginning in 1989 to characterize hormone patterns during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. Based on serum progesterone concentrations, mean (±SEM) duration of the estrous cycle (n = 20) was 30.8 ± 2.6 days (range, 25–38 days) with a luteal phase length of 18.1 ± 0.4 days (range, 15–20 days). Mean peak serum progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase were 1.35 ± 0.16 ng/ml, and nadir concentrations were 0.19 ± 0.03 ng/ml during the interluteal period. Distinct surges of estradiol preceded luteal phase progesterone increases in most (14/20) cycles. Gestation length was 392 ± 4 days for three complete pregnancies. Mean serum progesterone concentrations increased throughout gestation and were 1.83 ± 0.13, 2.73 ± 0.13, and 4.30 ± 0.16 ng/ml during early, mid- and late gestation, respectively. Serum estradiol concentrations began to rise during mid-gestation, increasing dramatically during the last week of pregnancy. Patterns of serum estriol and estrone secretion during pregnancy were similar to that observed for estradiol. In contrast to progesterone and estrogens, serum cortisol concentrations were unchanged during pregnancy or parturition. Females resumed cycling 16.2 ± 2.0 days after parturition (n = 4) and, on two occasions, females became pregnant during the first postpartum estrus. These data suggest that the tapir cycles at approximately monthly intervals and that increases in serum progesterone are indicative of luteal activity. The interluteal period is relatively long, comprising approximately 40% of the estrous cycle. During gestation, progesterone concentrations are increased above luteal phase levels, and there is evidence of increased estrogen production during late gestation. The absence of increased cortisol secretion at the end of gestation suggests that this steroid does not play a major role in initiating parturition in this species. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Despite its relative abundance and wide geographical range, the population dynamics and reproductive biology of the European polecatMustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758 are largely unknown as to the wild living. We therefore investigated age and reproductive status of 239 Danish polecats primarily killed in traffic or trapped during 1998–2004. Males comprised two third of all individuals in all age groups. Based on a static life table, apparent annual mortality was 68% during the first year of life, 33% during the second year and 65% from the third year in both sexes. The mean (± SE) litter size of 5.95 ± 0.62 (n = 18), estimated from placental scar counts, was significantly lower than litter sizes at birth reported for captive individuals but consistent with litter sizes reported for wild polecats in Russia. Female yearlings conceived at the same rate and produced litters of the same size as older individuals.Males had spermatozoa in their testes from February through August. Testes mass peaked in April and May, ie the same period when most females conceive. A lower prevalence of individuals with spermatozoa in yearlings suggests that most males postponed sexual maturity to two years of age.  相似文献

The analysis of fecal ovarian steroids provides a powerful noninvasive method to obtain insights into ovulatory cycles, gestation length, and the timing of sexual interactions relative to the periovulatory period in wild primates. Techniques developed to collect and assay feces from free-ranging muriqui monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides) for estradiol and progesterone yield the first explicit reproductive data on this species, and provide the first opportunity to evaluate the timing of observed copulations with muriqui ovarian cycles. Hormonal profiles from seven females indicate average cycle lengths of 21.0 ± 5.4 days (n=20). Females conceived after 3–6 ovulatory cycles. Gestation length averaged 216.4 ± 1.5 days for the five females for which conception cycles were sampled. Discrete copulation periods spanned an average of 2.1 ± 1.2 days (n=29), with intervals between these concentrated periods of copulations averaging 15.6 ± 6.7 days (n=20). There were no significant differences among females in cycle lengths, copulation period lengths, or copulation interval lengths. Ejaculation was visible following 71.8 ± 26.7% of copulations during the females' preovulatory periods. All females copulated outside the periovulatory period. The proportion of copulation days outside the periovulatory period was slightly greater (p=0.08) for primiparous females (64.8 ± 28.3%) than for multiparous females (28.7 ± 19.7%). Am. J. Reproductive endocrine patterns were characterized in female ocelots (Leopardus pardalis; n = 3), tigrinas (Leopardus tigrinus; n = 2), and margays (Leopardus wiedii; n = 2) housed in captivity in southern Brazil. Females were maintained as singletons and exposed to natural fluctuations in photoperiod. Cyclic changes in ovarian steroids were monitored by analyzing estrogen and progestogen metabolites in fecal samples collected five times weekly for 14 to 18 months. Based on intervals between fecal estrogen peaks, mean (± SEM) duration of the estrous cycle was 18.4 ± 1.6 days for the ocelots (range, 7–31 days; n = 75 cycles), 16.7 ± 1.3 days for the tigrinas (range, 11–27 days; n = 23 cycles), and 17.6 ± 1.5 days for the margays (range, 11–25 days; n = 32 cycles). Fecal progestogen analyses combined with two laparoscopic observations of the ovaries confirmed that ocelots and tigrinas did not ovulate spontaneously. In contrast, non‐mating–induced luteal phases of 40.1 ± 6.3 days in duration (range, 30–60 days) were observed frequently in both margays. There was no evidence of gonadal seasonality in margays in either follicular or luteal activity. In ocelots, cyclic changes in estrogen excretion were observed during each month of the year; however, only one female cycled continuously. In the other two ocelots, periods of acyclicity of several months’ duration were observed. It was not possible to conclude whether tigrinas were aseasonal because estrous cyclicity was observed in only one of two individuals. In the female that cycled, a 3‐month period of acyclicity was observed in the late fall/early winter. These data demonstrate similarities among three felid species of the genus Leopardus, including evidence they are polyestrous but experience unexplained periods of ovarian inactivity. Only the margays differed by exhibiting occasional spontaneous, non‐mating–induced ovulations. Historically, these species have not bred well in captivity. However, it is hoped that understanding the biological similarities and differences among them could lead to improved management strategies that may one day result in increased reproductive success. A secondary analysis of longitudinal and cohort studies was carried out to quantitatively investigate the motor activity pattern, recorded through actigraphy, during the first six hours of nocturnal sleep. The first study was of longitudinal nature. Ten healthy participants (four females) were monitored three times, at baseline (T1) when they were infants (mean age 7.10 ± 0.32 months), at the first follow-up examination (T2) around 4 months later (mean age 11.20 ± 0.63 months) and at the second follow-up (T3) around three years later, when they were preschoolers (mean age 4.68 ± 0.14 years). At T1, T2 and T3 each participant wore the actigraph Basic Mini-Motionlogger (Ambulatory Monitoring, Inc., Ardsley, NY, USA) over at least two consecutive nycthemeral cycles, with the aim to measure the mean hourly motor activity count. Seven- and 11-month-old infants had a higher level of motor activity over the night compared to preschoolers. Furthermore, motor activity increased as the night progressed, with a pronounced increment at both T1 and T2, while at T3 such an increase was less marked. The second study was cross-sectional and aimed to explore the motor activity pattern, using actigraphy, during the first six hours of nocturnal sleep in multiple-age healthy groups, from infancy to adulthood. We assigned participants to eight groups according to age: 20 (five females) aged around 10 months old (mean age 10.65 ± 0.67 months); 13 (nine females) aged around 4 years (mean age 4.38 ± 0.51 years); 21 (10 females) aged around 10 years (mean age 9.67 ± 0.91 years); 21 (nine females) aged around 20 years (mean age 19.33 ± 2.44 years); 20 (10 females) aged around 30 years (mean age 29.80 ± 1.99 years); 20 (15 females) aged around 40 years (mean age 40.70 ± 1.26 years); 20 (11 females) aged around 50 years (mean age 50.15 ± 2.80 years) and 20 (nine females) aged around 60 years (mean age 59.25 ± 3.23 years). The participants aged between 10 and 60 years wore the actigraph Basic Mini-Motionlogger over seven consecutive nycthemeral cycles (infants and preschoolers wore the actigraph over at least two consecutive nycthemeral cycles), with the aim to measure the mean hourly motor activity count. The results indicated a significantly higher motor activity count in 10-month-old infants compared to all the remaining age groups. Moreover, the pattern of motor activity of 10-month-old infants was different from that of all other groups, with the highest motor activity counts from the second to the sixth hour of sleep. Considered as a whole, the results of both studies converge regarding the high motor activity detected among infants, which could be explained by the presence of a maturational process that has not yet been fully completed at this stage of life. In both studies, only the motor activity of infants was above the cutoff level established for normal adults, highlighting the need to establish a specific cutoff value for infants.  相似文献

Summary. Gaucher disease is caused by an autosomal-recessive deficiency of glucocerebrosidase. Cells of monocytic/macrophagic origin accumulate glucosylceramide. This leads to hepatosplenomegaly, bone destruction, thrombocytopenia and anemia. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with macrophage-targeted glucocerebrosidase leads to normalization of these parameters. The way of macrophage activation in Gaucher disease is not known. Recently, the osmolytes taurine, betaine and inositol were identified as important regulators of macrophage function in liver. Therefore, the role of plasma taurine in Gaucher disease as a primarily macrophage-derived disease was studied. Fasting plasma levels were measured from blood samples of healthy control subjects (n = 29, m : f = 11 : 18, mean age 37 ± 3 years), from un-treated Gaucher patients (n = 16, m : f = 7 : 9, mean age 44 ± 4 years) and those treated for 37 ± 2 months (n = 54, m : f = 19 : 35, mean age 47 ± 2 years). Amino acid analysis was carried out in a BioChrom amino acid analyzer. In the untreated patients, plasma taurine was 45 ± 3 μM, as compared to the controls with a plasma taurine of 63 ± 4 μM (p < 0.01). The aver-age increase of plasma taurine during the first year of ERT was 18 ± 8 μM (n = 10). Patients treated for an average of 37 months (range 1–9 years of ERT) had a plasma taurine of 65 ± 4 μM (n = 54), which was not different from the controls. It is concluded that Gaucher patients show decreased plasma taurine levels and that therapy of Gaucher disease might correct this. It has to be established, whether decreased taurine availability is a cofactor of the permanent activation of glucosylceramide-storing monocytes/macrophages in this disease. Analysis of fecal progestogen profiles during Depo‐Provera injection (1,200 mg; DEPO, Pfizer Inc., New York, NY), melengestrol acetate (MGA) in feed (2 or 3 mg/head/day), and a combination treatment (DEPO+MGA) are presented for nine captive female Nile hippos housed at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. All tested treatments reduced fecal progestogen elevations successfully to durations consistent with prevention of ovulation for a portion of the treatment period. Percentage of treatment months with suppression of luteal phases indicative of ovulation was maximal for high‐dose MGA (91.7±13.9%) and DEPO+MGA (91.7±20.4%), followed by DEPO injection alone (69.2±13.9%) and low‐dose MGA (57.6±33.2%). Both 1,200 mg DEPO and low‐dose MGA (2.0 mg/day) treatments were insufficient to prevent an apparent seasonal breakthrough of ovarian activity from June–August 2002. Although luteal phases were observed, no females conceived during those months. Overall, in 133.5 treatment months with females housed with an adult male, one female conceived during the transition period between treatments. After cessation of contraceptive treatment, average latency to first normal ovarian cycle was 80.6±19.5 days (range = 22–179 days). Up to 12 months post‐treatment, however, successive cycles were often irregular with evidence of short periods of anovulation and shortened luteal phases in all females monitored. In conclusion, high dose and combination treatments were most successful in preventing progestogen increases indicative of ovulation in hippos. Objective: A low resting metabolic rate for a given body size and composition, a low rate of fat oxidation, low levels of physical activity, and low plasma leptin concentrations are all risk factors for body weight gain. The aim of the present investigation was to compare resting metabolic rate (RMR), respiratory quotient (RQ), levels of physical activity, and plasma leptin concentrations in eight post‐obese adults (2 males and 6 females; 48.9 ± 12.2 years; body mass index [BMI]: 24.5 ± 1.0 kg/m2; body fat 33 ± 5%; mean ± SD) who lost 27.1 ± 21.3 kg (16 to 79 kg) and had maintained this weight loss for ≥2 months (2 to 9 months) to eight age‐ and BMI‐matched control never‐obese subjects (1 male and 7 females; 49.1 ± 5.2 years; BMI 24.4 ± 1.0 kg/m2; body fat 33 ± 7%). Research Methods and Procedures: Following 3 days of weight maintenance diet (50% carbohydrate and 30% fat), RMR and RQ were measured after a 10‐hour fast using indirect calorimetry and plasma leptin concentrations were measured using radioimmunoassay. Levels of physical activity were estimated using an accelerometer over a 48‐hour period in free living conditions. Results: After adjustment for fat mass and fat‐free mass, post‐obese subjects had, compared with controls, similar levels of physical activity (4185 ± 205 vs. 4295 ± 204 counts) and similar RMR (1383 ± 268 vs. 1430 ± 104 kcal/day) but higher RQ (0.86 ± 0.04 vs. 0.81 ± 0.03, p < 0.05). Leptin concentration correlated positively with percent body fat (r = 0.57, p < 0.05) and, after adjusting for fat mass and fat‐free mass, was lower in post‐obese than in control subjects (4.5 ± 2.1 vs. 11.6 ± 7.9 ng/mL, p < 0.05). Discussion: The low fat oxidation and low plasma leptin concentrations observed in post‐obese individuals may, in part, explain their propensity to relapse.  相似文献

The dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus) is an important teleost harvested by recreational and commercial fishers throughout its endemic distribution along eastern Australia. This study indicates that the species has an extended spawning period throughout the austral summer, with females in spawning condition occurring in lower estuarine and coastal waters. Total length (L50) and age (A50) at which 50% (±1 SE) of the population was mature was 31.72 (±1.08) cm TL and 1.22 (±0.44) years for males and 56.75 (±0.60) cm TL and 4.55 (±0.13) years for females. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters differed significantly between sexes; females grew faster and attained a greater maximum TL and age than males. The largest female was 98.5 cm TL (7.5 kg), and the oldest 16 years, whereas the largest male was 61.5 cm TL (1.58 kg) and 11 years of age. A tag‐and‐release study identified the exchange of sub‐adult and mature‐sized individuals among estuaries. Determinations of length‐based management regulations for the species are compounded by the large gender‐based differences in growth and length‐at‐maturity. Current minimum legal lengths of 30–40 cm TL protect approximately 3–9% of the female spawning population. Alternative management options, including harvest slot sizes, need to be investigated and tested.  相似文献

Profiles of fecal progestogens and body weight from the early juvenile to the peri‐pubertal period are presented for eight captive female Nile hippopotami housed at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. Average growth rate in juveniles was 0.85±0.03 kg/day (r2=0.913). Progestogen elevations were detectable as early as 16.8 months of age, and elevations indicative of ovulation and luteal activity were identified in seven of eight females by 30.3±1.6 months of age and body weight of 829.3±49.4 kg. Progestogen patterns before the onset of puberty were highly variable within and between females. Some females remained at baseline concentrations, whereas in others the progestogen pattern was characterized by infrequent, transient elevations of low amplitude and shortened duration. Four females were monitored through onset of puberty, conception, and first pregnancy. Onset of puberty was defined as the first luteal phase from the series of consecutive ovarian cycles culminating in conception and was observed at 34.9±2.2 months of age and 963.6±39.4 kg, however, the quality and number of cycles varied among females before conception. Females conceived between 2.7–3.9 years of age after attaining an approximate threshold body weight of 1,000 kg (1,070.5±39.5 kg). Abstract: Despite outnumbering their temperate counterparts, tropical snake species have been poorly studied. Yet, the few tropical species that have been studied show a variety of behavioural traits beyond those described in temperate species. Here we reveal both age and sexual differences in the movements of tropical green pythons (Morelia viridis: Pythonidae). We radio‐tracked 27 individuals (17 females and 10 males) for up to 18 months, locating individuals during both the day and night. The home range size for adult females (mean ± SE of 6.21 ± 1.85 ha) was correlated with snout–vent length. Neither adult males nor juveniles had a stable home range. Adult females had stable home ranges that overlapped considerably with those of other females and yellow individuals. Multiple radio‐tracked adult males passed through the territory of radio‐tracked adult females during the study. Females of all sizes were more likely to change position each day than males. There were no differences between the sexes or size categories in the distances moved in most months, although the variation in movement distances was higher in the dry season than during the wet season. In the wet season (January–March) movement distances increased and these were size‐ and sex‐related. This increased activity may be associated with mate searching. Males of M. viridis may maximize their rate of encountering mature females by roaming rather than maintaining a home range. Juvenile green pythons moved distances equal to adult snakes in most months despite their comparatively small size.  相似文献

Pregnancy and the reproductive cycle were monitored in 13 captive southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) by measuring progesterone metabolites in fecal extracts and by observing behavior patterns. Fecal hormones were measured using a monoclonal antibody produced against 4‐pregnen‐11‐o1‐3,20‐dione hemisuccinate:BSA. Several subjects exhibited flat or erratic endocrine profiles, but we found evidence for 17 reproductive cycles in five females. Mating behavior coincided with nadirs in pregnane concentrations. These cycles appeared to fall into two general categories: those of approximately 1 month in duration (Type I: X¯ ± SEM = 35.4± 2.2 days; n = 10) and those lasting approximately 2 months (Type II: 65.9± 2.4 days; n = 7). Interluteal phase lengths were similar for the two cycle types, but Type II cycles were characterized by extended luteal phases lasting more than twice as long as Type I luteal phases. Because Type I cycles predominated in our data and because evidence suggests that some Type II cycles may be aberrant, we argue that these approximately monthly cycles represent the typical reproductive cycle for this species. Three females became pregnant during the course of the study. We were able to detect pregnancy by approximately 3 months post‐breeding, as indicated by sustained pregnane concentrations markedly higher than nonpregnant luteal phase concentrations. These data help to characterize important reproductive events of this species and should be useful for captive breeding efforts for this threatened species. In the present study, we analyzed the results of two years of response to the male effect in seasonally anestrous goats to investigate whether the activation of female reproductive activity by the male effect is related to the body weight of the females. Seventy-nine adult female Mexican mixed breed goats were used. The anestrous females were exposed during 15 days to sexually active males, and were classified into three categories according to their mean body weight +/-SD (42 +/- 9 kg) (Light: < or = 33 kg, n = 19; Medium: 34-50 kg, n = 46; Heavy: > or = 51 kg, n = 14). More than 98% of the goats from the Medium and Heavy groups showed at least one estrus behavior within the first 15 days following the introduction of the bucks, versus only 63% of the females from the Light group (P < 0.01). The interval between the introduction of the males and the onset of estrus behavior was longer in the females of the Light and Medium groups (4.2 +/- 0.8 and 3.3 +/- 0.3 days) than in the females of the Heavy group (2.0 +/- 0.2 days; P < 0.03). Also, body weight was negatively correlated with latency to first estrus (Spearman r = -0.57; P < 0.001). These results are in agreement with the hypothesis that the ability of anestrous goats to respond to the male effect is positively influenced by their body weight.  相似文献

We studied the ontogeny of hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and erythrocyte counts in the Galapagos fur seal ( Arctocephalus galapagoensis , Heller 1904). Two hundred and fifty-three animals were sampled between the ages of 22 d and > 8 yr, of which 46 were adult females. Body mass increased steadily with age from 6.1 ± 1.2 kg in 1-mo-old pups ( n = 27) to 28.5 ± 3.3 kg in adult females. Even adult females increased in mass with age. Hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), and red blood cell (RBC) values all increased in a logarithmic fashion with age up to 2 yr. Blood values for pups were Hct: 35.5 ± 4.1%; Hb: 12.9 ± 1.3 g/dl; RBC: 4.1 ± 0.3·106/μl. Half-year-old fur seals (Hct: 42.1 ± 3.2%; Hb: 15.7 ± 1.3 g/dl; RBC: 4.9 ± 0.5·106/μl; n = 50) were the oldest age group to show significantly lower blood values than adult females ( P < 0.001 for all three parameters). Yearling blood values (Hct: 47.2 ± 3.6%; Hb: 17.3 ± 1.6 g/dl; RBC: 5.6 ± 0.4·106/μl; n = 56) did not differ significantly from those of adult females ( P < 0.32; P < 0.26; P < 0.23, respectively). Blood values of adult females were lower than those of 2-yr-olds (Hct: 49.6 ± 2.4%; Hb: 18.5 ± 1.2 g/dl; RBC: 5.7 ± 0.3·106/μl; n = 31). These differences were significant only for RBCs ( P < 0.003). Up to the age of 1 yr, age was the best predictor for blood values, thereafter mass tended to be a better predictor. Female juveniles between the ages of 150 and 600 d had higher blood values than same-age males. The relationship of blood value development to diving activity is briefly described and the results are compared to values of other marine mammals. Ontogeny is discussed in relation to the development of these blood values in terrestrial mammals.  相似文献
