This was a follow-up study of earlier reported findings by the present investigators suggesting, albeit equivocally, that separation during early childhood inhibited later sexual acts of a potentially procreative nature between siblings but did not deter other sexual activity. The present study surveyed 170 subjects, mostly in the Toronto area, by telephone and mail. Respondents reporting potentially procreative, postchildhood sexual acts (attempted or completed genital intercourse) with siblings were compared with those reporting sexual relationships excluding procreative acts, and a third sample reporting no postchildhood sibling sexual behavior. Consonant with expectations from the earlier study, prolonged separation during early childhood was associated with procreative postchildhood sexual activity but not with other postchildhood sexual activity. Contrary to predictions, however, both sexual activity groups reported significantly more nudity and physical contact with siblings during childhood than subjects reporting no sexual activity. The findings are discussed in terms of a revised version of the Westermarck hypothesis, which is consistent with a domain-specific approach to evolved incest avoidance mechanisms.  相似文献

Research on human inbreeding avoidance has uncovered at least two central cues to the detection of siblings: witnessing an infant being taken care of by one's mother (i.e. maternal perinatal association) and growing up in close proximity to a child (the so-called Westermarck effect). Both cues have been supported by fieldwork in populations under specific cultural conditions, and by survey research mainly in student populations. Both types of research have relied often on self-reporting. Unfortunately, this method is frequently colored by ceiling effects and notions of social desirability. In order to circumvent this problem, we explored a complementary method for investigating incest aversion that involved measuring psychophysiological responses during an imagery task. As such, we analyzed data on 63 heterosexual female students who viewed pictures of sexual and non-sexual activities while imagining performing these activities with either their partner or their brother. In female subjects with only (one or more) older brothers—a proxy for lacking maternal perinatal association with an opposite-sex sibling—the duration of coresidence with brother(s) predicted activity in the mm. levator labii superioris and alaeque nasi, facial muscles that are highly active when a subject expresses facial disgust. The strength of these responses was also predicted by the frequency of having bathed and shared a bedroom with a brother in early childhood; two activities that may serve as additional cues for relatedness as it can be expected that they are typically performed with genetically related children. As a result, the psychophysiological approach not only complements the use of self-reports in recent research on incest aversion, but also has the potential to fine-tune well-established cues for sibling detection, or to uncover additional ones.  相似文献

Copious and unequivocal evidence of legally condoned and socially favored brother-sister and parent-child marriage among common people from Roman Egypt (first to third centuries, A.D.) and Zoroastrian Iran (fifth century, B.C. to 11th century, A.D.) can be taken to pose a challenge to the sociobiological case for universal evolved incest avoidance within the nuclear family, triggered by early childhood proximity (the Westermarck effect). Official census documents from Roman Egypt show a high incidence of full sibling unions with relatively small age gaps between the spouses and no indication of reduced marital fertility, sexual aversion, or increased infant and child mortality. Zoroastrian religious tracts actively encourage nuclear family incest and extol its meritorious nature and supernatural benefits. A schematic assessment of the likely extent of inbreeding depression in such families under conditions of very high mortality through other causes makes reproduction at replacement level seem difficult to accomplish. But given the lack of information on the frequency of deleterious recessive genes in these populations, this reconstruction is fraught with uncertainty; pertinent ancient evidence is suggestive of some incidence of inbreeding depression but remains inconclusive. Aversion and revulsion between incestuous spouses proves a similarly elusive issue. Although these cases from antiquity do not clearly contradict the view of incest avoidance as an evolved mechanism that engenders sexual indifference and normally translates into corresponding cultural norms, they demonstrate the need for a more comprehensive consideration of the available historical record in the testing of evolutionary rules.  相似文献

Natural experiments such as the Israeli Kibbutzim and Taiwanese minor marriages provide unique opportunities for testing the effects of childhood association on adult sexual attraction. Within these populations, early childhood association leads to the development of a sexual aversion, an effect first proposed by Edward Westermarck. However, recent analysis of Taiwanese minor marriages indicates that only the age at first association (an inverse index of childhood association) of the younger partner predicts marital fertility rates; the age at first association of the older partner does not. Although considered a puzzle, a recent model of human inbreeding avoidance can explain this pattern. This model suggests that the mind uses at least two kinship cues to regulate the development of sibling sexual aversions: (i) childhood coresidence duration, a default cue used mainly by younger siblings in detecting probable older siblings, and (ii) exposure to one's mother caring for a newborn, a cue only available to older siblings and reliable regardless of coresidence duration and, hence, age at first association. Thus, one reason that the age at first association of only the younger partner in minor marriages predicts fertility is that coresidence duration serves as a cue to siblingship mainly for younger partners; older partners use a different kinship cue not influenced by durations of association. When compared to data from psychological investigations of the effects of coresidence duration on opposition to sibling incest, the minor marriage data reveal an identical pattern providing converging lines of evidence that multiple kinship cues mediate sibling detection and inbreeding avoidance in humans.  相似文献

In the past decade, several reports, including data from Taiwan on the sim-pua form of marriage, have provided evidence for the Westermarck Hypothesis, a heretofore unpopular explanation of the incest taboo. This theory states that intimate childhood association breeds sexual disinterest. A preliminary study of FBD marriage in Lebanon reveals similar support for Westermarck's theory. The Lebanese patrilateral parallel cousin marriages examined produced significantly fewer children and more divorces than nonpaternal first cousin unions. Given the quite disparate cultures from which this evidence comes, serious reconsideration of Westermarck's Hypothesis is suggested. Sex between full sibs is unusual in birds, mammals, and humans. These species likely possess an innate avoidance mechanism based on early proximity (i.e., the Westermarck hypothesis), and the rare occurrences may be attributable to error. Alternatively, an inclusive fitness argument shows that a low rate of sib mating may be an adaptation. The widespread occurrence of a prohibition against brother–sister sex in human societies is often invoked as evidence against an innate avoidance mechanism, since if the latter were to exist the former would be superfluous. However, given that punishing violators is costly, a prohibition is more likely to spread through an egalitarian society when the prohibited behavior is already avoided. I describe a model of the cultural dynamics of the sibling incest taboo which we have used to investigate this possibility. The predictions derived from this model are consistent with, and add rigor to, Westermarcks theory of the origin of the incest taboo.  相似文献

Since mating is seldom observed between sibling prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster, this, behavioural discrimination was used to investigate sibling recognition in this species. Cross-fostering of 1–3-day-old pups demonstrated that unrelated pups reared together did not breed, whereas siblings reared apart bred readily when paired at weaning. When unrelated voles were paired at 14 days of age, prior to sexual maturity, significantly fewer pairs bred than when strangers were paired at 21 days of age. Separation of 21-day-old siblings for 8 days before pairing overcame incest avoidance; a 15-day separation was required for breeding by siblings that had remained together until they were 50 days old. These results indicate that sibling recognition and, consequently, incest avoidance depend on association prior to weaning.  相似文献

The biological costs of inbreeding are expected to have shaped human incest aversion. These costs depend on biological sex, relatedness, and age. Whereas previous studies have focused on investigating how these factors modulate incest aversion in siblings and cousins—family members of the same generation— we examined relatives of different generations. In a population-based sample, 2499 respondents reported reactions to imagined sexual behaviors with either a biological child or parent, a niece/nephew or aunt/uncle, or a stepchild or stepparent; these responses were compared to reactions to imagined sexual behaviors involving a friend's child or parent. Replicating prior results, women report stronger incest aversions than do men. We extend previous findings by showing that incest aversions tended to be stronger between close (vs. more distant) intergenerational relatives. Indeed, for biological relatives, decreased degree of relatedness was associated with decreased incest aversion, and for biological relatives, the certainty in relatedness was also positively associated with incest aversion. As expected, age modulated sexual aversion for unrelated, but not related, target individuals. Sexual aversions towards step-relatives did not differ from sexual aversions to biological relatives.  相似文献

Perinatal administration of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) reportedly inhibits the sexual behavior of sexually naïve adult male rats. In order to evaluate the effects of BPA administration during early development on later reproductive behavior, we administered one of five doses of bisphenol A daily to pregnant female rats throughout gestation and lactation, and quantified the appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors of the resultant male and female offspring over multiple sexual encounters in adulthood. Males receiving low dose perinatal BPA (50 μg/kg bw/day) showed persistent deficits in sexual behavior in adulthood. Males receiving the highest dose (5 mg/kg bw/day), however, were indistinguishable from controls with respect to consummatory sexual behaviors but showed decreased latencies to engage in those behaviors when sexually naïve, with significant non-linear, or U-shaped, dose-response relationships observed on the first and last day of testing. Adult female sexual behavior was not affected by early BPA administration at any dose tested. These results are consistent with previous reports that BPA exerts behavioral effects especially at low doses, and further indicates that BPA can cause lasting impairment of sexual behavior in males, but does not alter the normal development of female appetitive or consummatory sexual behaviors. To our knowledge, this is the first report indicating that adult sexual performance is impaired in sexually experienced animals following perinatal exposure to bisphenol A.  相似文献

The natural experiments created by the Israeli Kibbutzim and Taiwanese minor marriages provide unique testing grounds for investigating the mechanisms governing sibling detection, inbreeding avoidance and kin-selected altruism. Here we present two studies conducted on the coreared peers of Israeli Kibbutzim. We examined how coresidence duration — a cue that would have indicated genetic relatedness in ancestral environments — impacts the development of kin-directed behaviors. In both studies, we found that coresidence duration predicts levels of altruism and sexual aversions directed toward peers. We also investigated the relationship between personal sexual aversions and moral attitudes relating to peer sexual behavior. The absence of norms proscribing sex between peers on the Kibbutz allows for a more tightly controlled investigation of this relationship. We found that total coresidence duration with opposite-sex peers predicts the intensity of moral wrongness associated with third-party peer sexual behavior, but not other behaviors, including sibling incest. More directly, we found that the summed sexual aversion felt toward all opposite-sex peers predicts levels of moral wrongness associated with third-party peer sex. Mediation analyses confirmed that personal sexual aversions mediate the relationship between coresidence duration and moral attitudes regarding peer sex. These results bolster Westermarck's original claims that childhood coresidence serves as a kinship cue, leading to greater sexual aversions and altruistic motivations, and that personal sexual aversions shape attitudes relating to third-party sexual behavior.  相似文献

Olfactory sexual inhibition and the westermarck effect   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Westermarck effect (sexual inhibition among individuals raised together) is argued to be mediated olfactorily. Various animals, including humans, distinguish among individuals by scent (significantly determined by MHC genotype), and some avoid cosocialized associates on this basis. Possible models of olfactory mechanisms in humans are evaluated. Evidence suggests aversions develop during an early sensitizing period, attach to persons as much as to their scents, and are more powerful among females than among males. Adult to child aversions may develop similarly, but more likely result from stimulus generalization. This hypothesis accords with current evidence and yields testable predictions (e.g., anosmia will prevent inhibition) that, should they be supported, will conclusively ground the Westermarck effect in a biological mechanism. Cohabitation during childhood has been described as a powerful inhibitor of later sexual interest in animals including humans (the 'Westermarck effect'), serving as a brother–sister incest avoidance mechanism. Mound-building mice Mus spicilegus display a strong social inhibition of reproduction, responsible for the absence of reproduction in over-wintering tumuli. To better understand the mechanisms responsible for triggering reproduction in this monogamous species, we formed 100 experimental couples of juveniles (35 d) and surveyed reproduction for 45 d. As expected, very few couples reproduced, which confirms the role of social familiarity in the inhibition of reproduction. Temporary separation (1 h or 24 h) of the two partners had little effect on reproductive success. However, pairing with a new partner, with or without prior isolation, significantly triggered reproduction. Observations of the first encounter between new partners revealed more agonistic and less affiliative behaviour than in controls (reunion of familiar partners). Interestingly, when the new partner was a sibling of the previous one, the behavioural analysis revealed an intermediate level of aggression, indicating that kinship with the previous partner was perceived and had consequences on social behaviour. Mice could therefore choose a new partner based on its relatedness to the previous mate. Mutual tolerance between new partners during the dyadic encounter was negatively correlated with subsequent reproduction. These results demonstrate the paramount role of social novelty in triggering reproduction in this monogamous mouse, and suggest a link between agonistic behaviour and sexual motivation. In the field, mound-building mice may need to engage in agonistic interactions so as to overcome the long-lasting social inhibition of reproduction in overwintering mounds.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory predicts that humans should avoid incest because the behavior depresses individual fitness through production of defective offspring. Selection for avoidance of close-kin mating has resulted in a developmental mechanism that promotes voluntary incest avoidance. If avoided, why are social rules constructed in most cultures to regulate incest? The suggestion in this article is that incest do not regulate close-kin mating, but instead regulate inbreeding between more distant kin and sexual relations between nonkin. Inbreeding (e.g., cousin marriage) is hypothesized to be regulated because if it occurs, it can concentrate wealth and power within families threatening the powerful positions of rulers in the society. The hypothesis was supported using a worldwide sample of 129 societies, whereas two other alternative hypotheses (one dealing with coadapted genomes, and the other with sexual reproduction and host/ parasite coevolution), were not.  相似文献

In male rats, oxytocin impacts both sexual arousal and certain types of consummatory sexual behaviors. However, the role of oxytocin in the motivational aspects of sexual behavior has received limited attention. Given the role that oxytocin signaling plays in consummatory sexual behaviors, it was hypothesized that pharmacological attenuation of oxytocin signaling would reduce sexual motivation in male rats. Sexually experienced Long-Evans male rats were administered either an oxytocin receptor antagonist (L368,899 hydrochloride; 1 mg/kg) or vehicle control into the intraperitoneal cavity 40 min prior to placement into the center chamber of a three-chambered arena designed to assess sexual motivation. During the 20-minute test, a sexually experienced stimulus male rat and a sexually receptive stimulus female rat were separately confined to smaller chambers that were attached to the larger end chambers of the arena. However, physical contact between test and stimulus rats was prevented by perforated dividers. Immediately following the sexual motivation test, test male rats were placed with a sexually receptive female to examine consummatory sexual behaviors. Although both drug and vehicle treated rats exhibited a preference for the female, treatment with an oxytocin receptor antagonist decreased the amount of time spent with the female. There were no differences between drug and vehicle treated rats in either general activity, exploratory behaviors, the amount of time spent near the stimulus male rat, or consummatory sexual behaviors. Extending previous findings, these results indicate that oxytocin receptors are involved in sexual motivation in male rats.  相似文献

In Senegal, sexual disorders are a real diagnosis and support problem, which is due to the lack of information of patients, sexual taboos and the little number of these affections. Patients with an anejaculation without organic or iatrogenic etiology were sent to psychiatry in psychological support consultation. The individual sessions have identified common psychosocial factors over the circumstances leading up to and sustaining the psychogenic anejaculation. The first common factor is early sexual intercourse prior to puberty for all patients. In addition, we have noted the fear of a potential incest with guilt feelings, and a sort of over-appraisal of the anejaculation by partners, all these factors may contribute to the strengthening of the disorder Provision of a listening space associated with adjustments based on the behavioral cognitive approach could bring relief to patients.  相似文献

This study investigated measures of sexual behavior displayed by female rats in bilevel chambers, the statistical relationships among the measures, and their dependency on hormone priming. Normative data from a standard 35-min test of sexual behavior were gathered from 82 fully primed sexually experienced Long-Evans females and subjected to multiple correlational and factor analyses. Several consummatory measures of copulation were related significantly, whereas appetitive level changing was statistically independent of consummatory measures. Factor analyses were conducted using orthogonal rotations of correlational matrices derived either from (a) measures of female behavior alone or (b) measures of female and male behavior together. The first analysis revealed five factors that accounted for 84% of the intersubject variance: Receptivity, Pacing, Appetitive Level Changing, Lordosis Reflex, and Solicitation. The second factor analysis with male data included revealed seven factors that accounted for 95% of the intersubject variance: Pacing, Copulatory Rate, Mount Count, Receptivity, Appetitive Level Changing, Solicitation, and Lordosis Reflex. Subsequently, subsets of these females were maintained on different steroid priming regimens (oil, low estrogen, high estrogen, high estrogen and progesterone) prior to a standard test of sexual behavior. Although the expression of all sexual behaviors required estrogen priming, appetitive level changing, solicitation, and pacing required progesterone for their full expression. Finally, appetitive level changing developed following hormone treatment alone, regardless of whether the females received access to sexually active males, inactive castrated males, or other females. Use of bilevel chambers allows complex patterns of sexual behavior to be observed in female rats and may thus facilitate the identification of neurochemical or endocrine mechanisms associated with different aspects of female sexual motivation and performance.  相似文献

Instances of ‘resistance to satiation’ are described, in which instrumental behaviour continues in the absence of the consummatory response towards which it was originally directed. These findings illustrate, along with other data, that consummatory and instrumental activities are not determined by a single intervening ‘drive’ variable. One account of the relationship between consummatory and instrumental activities is that instrumental responding is maintained by the reinforcing effects of consummatory activities, and will only gradually disappear when that reinforcement is withdrawn. This suggests that satiation is highly related to extinction of behaviour by non-reward, and evidence for this possiblity is presented.  相似文献

Avian eggs contain substantial amounts of maternal yolk androgens, which have been shown to modulate offspring phenotype. The first studies on the functional consequences of maternal yolk androgens have focused on early life stages and their role in sibling competition. However, recent longitudinal studies reported long-lasting effects of maternal yolk androgens on offspring phenotype, mostly concerning traits that are sensitive to androgens. This suggests that maternal yolk androgens could play an important role in sexual selection, since the expression of many male sexual characters is testosterone-dependent. Using male canaries as a model, we examined the consequences of an experimental elevation of yolk testosterone concentrations on early development as well as long-lasting effects particularly on song, which is one of the most important sexual characters in male songbirds. Elevated yolk testosterone concentrations inhibited male growth, possibly in interaction with an existent ectoparasite exposure. Males hatched from testosterone-treated eggs (T-males) did not have enhanced competitive skills, in contrast to previous studies. The elevation of yolk testosterone concentrations delayed song development but did not affect adult song phenotype. This is intriguing, as yolk testosterone possibly induced developmental stress, which is known to reduce song quality. We hypothesize that yolk testosterone has either no direct effect on adult song phenotype, or that positive effects are merged by the negative effects of developmental stress. Finally, females mated with T-males invested more in their clutch indicating that females either assess T-males as more attractive (differential allocation hypothesis) or compensated for lower offspring viability (compensation hypothesis).  相似文献

Kin-recognition systems have been hypothesized to exist in humans, and adaptively to regulate altruism and incest avoidance among close genetic kin. This latter function allows the architecture of the kin recognition system to be mapped by quantitatively matching individual variation in opposition to incest to individual variation in developmental parameters, such as family structure and co-residence patterns. Methodological difficulties that appear when subjects are asked to disclose incestuous inclinations can be circumvented by measuring their opposition to incest in third parties, i.e. morality. This method allows a direct test of Westermarck's original hypothesis that childhood co-residence with an opposite-sex individual predicts the strength of moral sentiments regarding third-party sibling incest. Results support Westermarck's hypothesis and the model of kin recognition that it implies. Co-residence duration objectively predicts genetic relatedness, making it a reliable cue to kinship. Co-residence duration predicts the strength of opposition to incest, even after controlling for relatedness and even when co-residing individuals are genetically unrelated. This undercuts kin-recognition models requiring matching to self (through, for example, major histocompatibility complex or phenotypic markers). Subjects' beliefs about relatedness had no effect after controlling for co-residence, indicating that systems regulating kin-relevant behaviours are non-conscious, and calibrated by co-residence, not belief.  相似文献
