Regulation of the physical and biochemical composition of blood and seminal plasma by the blood-testis barrier in Labeo ruddi and Labeo rosae (Pisces: Cyprinidae)

• 1.1. The physical and biochemical composition of the seminal and blood plasma of two cyprinid fish were studied as well as the quantitative presence of lipids, ATP, glucose and pyruvate in both body fluids during spawning and post spawning stages.
• 2.2. Statistically significant interspecific differences were determined both for the spawning and post spawning stages as well as differences found for a particular species during spawning and post spawning phases.
• 3.3. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that a blood-testis barrier exists in the two species studied.

     

Oxidative metabolism of the inner and outer ventricular layers of carp heart (Cyprinus carpio L.)

• 1.1. The biochemical characteristics of homogenates and mitochondria isolated from the outer and inner layers of the ventricular myocardium of carp were studied.
• 2.2. The homogenate prepared from the inner layer exhibited higher activity of cytochrome oxidase than that from the outer layer. No difference was found in the activity of cytochrome oxidase between mitochondria from the inner and outer layers. Difference spectra of cytochromes also showed that their content in mitochondria of both layers is similar and that the higher oxidative capacity of the spongious layer is due to a higher content of mitochondria.
• 3.3. In comparison with rat heart a higher content of cyt aa₃ and a lower content of Cyt b and cyt cc₁ were found in carp heart mitochondria.
• 4.4. In comparison with rat heart, carp heart mitochondrial enzymes were more sensitive to freezing-thawing and to detergent action.

     

Evidence for two isoforms of carbonic anhydrase II in the leech (Hirudo medicinalis) central nervous system

• 1.1. We dissected, homogenized and prepared ganglia and connectives from the central nervous system of medicinal leeches for SDS gel electrophoresis. The isolated proteins were transferred to nitrocellulose and incubated with affinity column-purified antibodies.
• 2.2. The immunoblots showed a strong positive reaction of a bovine carbonic anhydrase standard at a molecular weight of 29 kDa, and a distinct double-bond at the same molecular weight in the analyzed material.
• 3.3. We demonstrated with rat antibodies that carbonic anhydrase II is detectable in the leech central nervous system as the main isoenzyme.
• 4.4. The biochemical knowledge of carbonic anhydrase reported here agrees well with the immunocytochemical locations, thus affirming the validity of specific staining.

Immunocytochemical localisation of vitellogenic and non-vitellogenic yolk proteins in the ovary of leptinotarsa decemlineata

• 1.1. Two vitellogenins and chromoprotein 2 are selectively accumulated by the oocyte and cannot be detected either in follicle cells or in the germarium.
• 2.2. At the start of their accumulation in terminal oocytes they are asymmetrically distributed.
• 3.3. Endocytosis of vitellogenin 1 starts somewhat later than the uptake of vitellogenin 2 and chromoprotein 2.
• 4.4. In follicle cells of young follicles, a protein (DLP), immunologically related to diapause protein 1, is highly concentrated.
• 5.5. During vitellogenesis DLP is sequestered by the oocytes.
• 6.6. The protein rich globules in terminal oocytes contain the vitellins as well as chromoprotein 2 and DLP.

     

Measurements of oxygen consumption in Mytilus edulis during exposure to,and recovery from,high sublethal concentrations of formaldehyde,benzene and phenol

• 1.1. The rate of oxygen consumption has been monitored continuously in M. edulis during acute exposure to high sublethal concentrations of formaldehyde, phenol and benzene and subsequent recovery periods of 96 hr.
• 2.2. The results are discussed in relation to changes in the electrochemical potential difference of sodium, the content of ATP and the tissue concentration of strombine.
• 3.3. After exposure to benzene and phenol, an increase in the rate of oxygen consumption that could not be explained by oxygen debt from the exposure period was observed.
• 4.4. Depression of the rate of oxygen consumption after exposure to formaldehyde may be explained by a reduced ability to extract oxygen from the water.
• 5.5. The pattern of oxygen consumption and behavioural responses, as well as the combined changes in the biochemical markers, were distinctly different in the three cases.

The purification of kallikrein from human whole saliva

• 1.1. A quick and simple procedure is described for purifying kallikrein from human whole saliva. The enzyme has been purified about 2700-fold with a yield of approx. 30%.
• 2.2. The procedure is based on the immediate fractionation of saliva by ion exchange chromatography. This is followed by a combination of affinity and high performance liquid chromatography.
• 3.3. The results indicate that another protein component binds to the enzyme at pH 8.0.
• 4.4. The homogeneity of the enzyme has been demonstrated by gel electrophoresis in the absence as well as in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate.
• 5.5. A mol. wt of 40,100±1800 has been calculated from gel electrophores is experiments.
• 6.6. Sedimentation equilibrium in an analytical ultracentrifuge gave a mol. wt of 39,700.
• 7.7. The amino acid composition has been determined and it confirms that the enzyme has a low isoelectric point.
• 8.8. The presence of tryptophan has been demonstrated by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.

     

Significance of scrotal afferents within the general thermoafferent system

• 1.1.|Switching neurons, in the past referred to as a special scrotal afferent system, intergrate information not only from the scrotum, but from various body areas.
• 2.2.|They are present in male and female rats, as well as in guinea-pigs.
• 3.3.|They are present in midbrain, thalamus, hypothalamus and cortical areas.
• 4.4.|Information processing from the scrotum, is not a special system, but part of the general thermo-and noci-afferent system.
• 5.5.|Switching neurons seem to interact with behavioral, perhaps with autonomic thermoregulatory mechanisms, too.

Aquatic ecotoxicology: On the problems of extrapolation from laboratory experiments with individuals and populations to community effects in the field

• 1.1. Ecotoxicology is defined as the study of the effect of toxicants on structure and function of ecosystems.
• 2.2. Properties of individuals and populations in laboratory experiments differ from those in the field with respect to distribution in space and time as well as to genetic structure.
• 3.3. Studies of community response can only be extrapolated to other systems if they include the analysis of the causal chain.
• 4.4. Causal explanations require a system analysis at different trophic levels as well as a modelling of the system and an analysis of sensitivity.
• 5.5. A research project is presented which covers most of the suggested problems.

Electrophoretic identification of bird species involved in collisions with aircraft

• 1.1. The utility of biochemical genetic methods of bird identification was investigated for some common species which create a hazard for commercial aviation in Ireland.
• 2.2. Sixteen enzyme loci were assayed in eight species, using starch gel electrophoresis; three larids, three corvids and two columbids.
• 3.3. Genera were distinguishable using all but two loci.
• 4.4. Differences within genera were small, but all species except for the gulls Larus argentatus and L. marinus, could be identified using one or more loci.
• 5.5. Arising from the success of the method using fresh specimens, a protocol for the electrophoretic identification of traumatized remains of strikes is suggested.

     

Effect of triton X-100 treatment on the lipid composition,biochemical and functional properties of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) myofibrils purified from pre- and post-spawned fish

• 1.1. The effects of Triton X-100 treatment on the lipid contents and functional properties of hake myofibrils from pre- and post-spawned fish were investigated.
• 2.2. Differences in lipids, biochemical and functional properties of hake myofibrils related to the gonadal condition of fish were observed.
• 3.3. Triton X-100 treatment removed 65% of polar lipids in myofibrils from pre-spawned fish and only 10% in myofibrils from post-spawned fish.
• 4.4. Triton X-100 increased the Hill coefficient to 1.5 in an allosteric type of reaction for the myofibrillar Mg²⁺-ATPase from pre-spawned hake.
• 5.5. The detergent effect observed on the contraction response was greater in myofibrils from prespawned fish than in post-spawned fish.

This paper comments on: Low, B. S., Alexander, R. D., and Noonan, K.M. Human hips, breast, and buttocks: Is fat deceptive? Ethology and Sociobiology 8: 249-247, 1987. In it I argue that:

• 1.1. Sexual selection has probably not been the most important selection pressure on
• 2.female human body shape.
• 3.2. Male humans in different cultures find different aspects of the female body attractive
• 4.and therefore are unlikely to have exerted consistent directional sexual selection on
• 5.the female body.
• 6.3. Breast size is not correlated with lactation success.
• 7.4. Visible hip width is not correlated with parturition success.
• 8.5. Women would lower their fitness if they tried to deceive men about their internal
• 9.pelvic dimensions.
• 10.6. There are many alternative hypothesis to explain the existence of fat onwomen's
• 11.breast, hips, and buttocks.

Deleterious effects of disulfiram on the respiratory electron transport system of liver mitochondria

• 1.1. The mechanism of action of disulfiram on the respiratory electron transport system of the liver mitochondria was studied in vitro.
• 2.2. Disulfiram inhibited the respiration supported by malate-glutamate as well as succinate.
• 3.3. Mitochondrial respiration inhibition was dependent upon alteration of —SH groups.
• 4.4. The inhibitory action of disulfiram might be related to the crosslinking of several proteins of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
• 5.5. The effects described above could be attributed to disulfiram per se and not to the main metabolite diethyldithiocarbamate.
