Summary Minute ventilation (V E), tidal volume (V T), respiratory frequency (f) and clavicular air sac gas composition were measured in conscious domestic fowl breathing air and hypoxic gas mixtures at neutral (18±1°C) and raised (33±1°C) air temperatures. Increases inV E caused by inhalation of 10%, 8% or 6.5% O2 in N2, respectively, were independent of temperature although at each level the absoluteV E was ca. 21·min−1 greater in the panting birds. Changes in respiratory pattern during hypoxia were markedly dependent on temperature. At 18°C almost all of the increasedV E resulted from increasedf. At 33°C hypoxia led to a strong suppression off and increase inV T. It is concluded that hyperthermia and hypoxia are additive and non-interactive in their effects on ventilatory drive, in agreement with previously reported effects of hypercapnia and physical exercise on breathing in panting fowl.  相似文献

Energy expenditure was measured in a group of 7 subjects who received two isocaloric isonitrogenous diets for a period of 9–21 days with a 4–10-day break between diets. Diet 1 was a high-fat diet (83.5 ± 3.6% of total energy). Diet 2 was a high carbohydrate diet (83.1 ± 3.7% of total energy). Resting and postprandial resting metabolic rate were measured by open circuit indirect calorimetry 2–4 times during each metabolic period. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured by the doubly labeled water method over an 8–13-day period. The respiratory quotient was measured 2–4 hours after a meal during each metabolic period for the calculation of total energy expenditure by the doubly labeled water method. Levels of total T3 (TT3), T3 uptake, free thyroid index and T4 were measured at the end of each metabolic period. No significant changes in resting metabolic rate (RMR) were apparent on the two diets (1567 ± 426 kcal/d high-fat diet and 1503 ± 412 kcal/d high-carbohydrate diet n=7, p<0.15). Total energy expenditure measured in 5 subjects was significantly higher during the high-carbohydrate phase of the diet (2443 ± 422 vs. 2078 ± 482 kcal/d p<0.05). Activity estimated from TEE/RMR was greater on the high-carbohydrate diet but only approached statistical significance (p<0.06). Total T3 was significantly lower and free thyroid index and T3 uptake were significantly higher at the end of the high fat diet in comparison to the high-carbohydrate diet. These data suggest that individual tolerance to a high-fat diet varies considerably and may significantly lower TEE by changing levels of physical activity. The explanation for changes in thyroid hormone levels independent of changes in metabolic rate remains unclear.  相似文献

We present a new invertebrate model for the study of epithelial sodium transport in tight epithelia, the earthworm integument. Dissected segments of earthworm integument were mounted in modified Ussing chambers and perfused with either pond water (PW) or earthworm ringer solution (ERS) on the apical side. In order to investigate ion transport under near-in vivo physiological conditions, measurements were performed under current-clamp conditions by monitoring the transepithelial potential (V T), as well as the transepithelial resistance (R T). These were recorded continuously and the virtual short circuit current (I SC) was calculated. The integument has a high transepithelial resistance (R T=9,037±502 Ω cm2 for PW, n=24, and 11,055±1,320 Ω cm2 for ERS, n=32). V T was −3.7±2.2 mV for PW (n=24) and −1.5±1.0 mV for ERS (n=32), and I SC was −0.57±0.30 μA/cm2 for PW (n=24) and −0.44±0.24 μA/cm2 for ERS (n=32). Only under PW, but not under ERS conditions, was there a pronounced inhibition of I SC by low doses of amiloride or its analogues phenamil and benzamil. The resistance of the paracellular pathway was found to be very high. The terrestrial oligochaete Lumbricus seems especially adapted to the environmental conditions because it has an ultra-tight integument and a very fast up- and down-regulation of apical Na+ channels.  相似文献

The localization, distribution and orientation of O2 chemoreceptors associated with the control of cardio-respiratory responses were investigated in the neotropical, Hoplias lacerdae. Selective denervation of the cranial nerves (IX and X) was combined with chemical stimulation (NaCN) to characterize the gill O2 chemoreceptors, and the fish were then exposed to gradual hypoxia to examine the extent of each cardio-respiratory response. Changes in heart rate (fH) and ventilation amplitude (Vamp) were allied with chemoreceptors distributed on both internal and external surfaces of all gill arches, while ventilation rate (fR) was allied to the O2 chemoreceptors located only in the internal surface of the first gill arch. H. lacerdae exposed to gradual hypoxia produced a marked bradycardia (45%) and 50% increase in Vamp, but only a relatively small change in fR (32%). Thus, the low fR response yet high Vamp were in accord with the characterization of the O2 chemoreceptors. Comparing these results from H. lacerdae with hypoxia-tolerant species revealed a relationship existent between general oxygenation of the individual species environment, its cardio-respiratory response to hypoxia and the characterization of O2 chemoreceptors.  相似文献

In one series of experiments, heart frequency (f H), blood pressure (P a), gill ventilation frequency (f R ), ventilation amplitude (V AMP) and total gill ventilation (V TOT) were measured in intact jeju (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus) and jeju with progressive denervation of the branchial branches of cranial nerves IX (glossopharyngeal) and X (vagus) without access to air. When these fish were submitted to graded hypoxia (water PO2 ~140, normoxia to 17 mmHg, severe hypoxia), they increased f R , V AMP, V TOT and P a and decreased f H. In a second series of experiments, air-breathing frequency (f RA), measured in fish with access to the surface, increased with graded hypoxia. In both series, bilateral denervation of all gill arches eliminated the responses to graded hypoxia. Based on the effects of internal (caudal vein, 150 μg NaCN in 0.2 mL saline) and external (buccal) injections of NaCN (500 μg NaCN in 1.0 mL water) on f R , V AMP, V TOT, P a and f H we conclude that the O2 receptors involved in eliciting changes in gill ventilation and associated cardiovascular responses are present on all gill arches and monitor the O2 levels of both inspired water and blood perfusing the gills. We also conclude that air breathing arises solely from stimulation of branchial chemoreceptors and support the hypothesis that internal hypoxaemia is the primary drive to air breathing.  相似文献

Obese individuals have reduced cardiorespiratory fitness as compared with leaner counterparts. Regular exercise maintains or increases fitness and lean body mass. Lean body mass, in turn, has a direct impact on resting metabolic rate (RMR). Given these relationships, we sought to evaluate the association between RMR and cardiorespiratory fitness in obese individuals. We evaluated 64 obese individuals (78% female) with direct assessment of RMR and cardiorespiratory fitness via breath‐by‐breath measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production at rest and during exercise. The mean age and BMI were 47.4 ± 12.2 years and 47.2 ± 9.2 kg/m2, respectively. The majority of subjects, 69%, had a measured RMR above that predicted by the Harris‐Benedict equation. Compared with the higher RMR group, those with a lower than predicted RMR had increased BMI, with values of 52.9 vs. 44.7 kg/m2, P = 0.001, respectively. Analysis of those demonstrating significant effort during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (peak respiratory exchange ratio ≥1.10) revealed a significantly higher peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) in the higher RMR group (17.3 ± 3.5 ml/min/kg) compared with the lower RMR group (13.6 ± 1.9 ml/min/kg), P = 0.003. In summary, a lower than predicted RMR was associated with a severely reduced VO2 peak and a higher BMI in this cohort. These data suggest that morbid obesity may be a vicious cycle of increasing BMI, reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle deconditioning, and lower RMR. Collectively, these responses may, over time, exacerbate the imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, resulting in progressive increases in body weight and fat stores.  相似文献

Most mammals are known to have clear circadian rhythms of body temperature (Tb) and metabolic rate. Large parts of the rhythms correspond to the oscillation of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST), dependent on visceral organ mass, and, affected by mass of brown adipose tissue (BAT). I tested whether: (1) a different levels of BMR result in respective changes of Tb values and the magnitude of daily RMR oscillations both within and below thermoneutrality; (2) the amplitude of daily variation of RMR depends on ambient temperature (Ta). I studied: (1) daily variation of body temperature at Ta of 23 °C, and (2) the rate of resting metabolism (RMR) within and below thermoneutrality at the time of minimum and increasing Tb (minimum and maximum NST capacity), in two lines of laboratory mice subjected to divergent, artificial selection toward high (HBMR) and low (LBMR) basal rate of metabolism (BMR). All mice had a clear circadian rhythm of Tb with minimum of 36.4±0.2 °C at 7:00 and maximum of 37.8±0.2 °C at 21:00. Their RMR measured below thermoneutrality exhibited significant daily variation, with the maximum between 16:00 and 19:00, when Tb was rising. Within thermoneutral zone (TNZ) I found between-line, but not between-time, differences in RMR. All between-line differences in RMR could be explained by the magnitude of BMR. I did not find any between-line differences of RMR value in temperatures below thermoneutrality. The amplitude of daily variation of RMR measured below TNZ depended neither on the Ta value nor on level of BMR (or visceral organs).  相似文献

The African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, possesses a pair of suprabranchial chambers located in the dorsal-posterior part of the branchial cavity having extensions from the upper parts of the second and fourth gill arches, forming the arborescent organs. This structure is an air-breathing organ (ABO) and allows aerial breathing (AB). We evaluated its cardiorespiratory responses to aquatic hypoxia. To determine the mode of air-breathing (obligate or accessory), fish had the respiratory frequency (f R) monitored and were subjected to normoxic water (PwO2 = 140 mmHg) without becoming hyperactive for 30 h. During this period, all fish survived without displaying evidences of hyperactivity and maintained unchanged f R, confirming that this species is a facultative air-breather. Its aquatic O2 uptake ( [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}{\text{O}}_{2} ) was maintained constant down to a critical PO2 (PcO2) of 60 mmHg, below which [(V)\dot]\textO2 \dot{V}{\text{O}}_{2} declined linearly with further reductions of inspired O2 tension (PiO2). Just above the PcO2 the ventilatory tidal volume (V T) increased significantly along with gill ventilation ( [(V)\dot]\textG \dot{V}_{\text{G}} ), while f R changed little. Consequently, the water convection requirement ( [(V)\dot]\textG /[(V)\dot]\textO2 ) \left( {\dot{V}_{\text{G}} /\dot{V}{\text{O}}_{2} } \right) increased steeply. This threshold applied to a cardiac response that included reflex bradycardia. AB was initiated at PiO2 = 140 mmHg (normoxia) and air-breathing episodes increased linearly with more severe hypoxia, being significantly higher at PiO2 tensions below the PcO2. Air-breathing episodes were accompanied by bradycardia pre air-breath, to tachycardia post air-breath.  相似文献

A study of lung gas exchange in the fresh water turtle Mauremys caspica leprosa at normal physiological body temperatures (15, 25 and 35 °C) was extended to extreme temperatures (5 and 40 °C) to determine whether the direct relationship between body temperature and ventilatory response found in many lung-breathing ectotherms including other chelonian species was maintained. From 5 to 35 °C the lung ventilation per unit of O2 uptake and CO2 removed declined with temperature. Consequently, lung CO2 partial pressure increased with temperature. Its value was maintained within narrow limits at each thermal constant, suggesting a suitable control throughout the complete ventilatory cycle. At 40 °C the ventilatory response showed the opposite trend. The ratios of ventilation to lung gas exchange increased compared to their values at 35 °C. The impact of this increased breathing-lowering the estimated mean alveolar CO2 partial pressure-was nevertheless less than expected due to an increase in calculated physiological dead space. This suggests that the relative hyperventilation in response to hyperthermia found in Mauremys caspica leprosa is related to evaporative heat loss.Abbreviations BTPS body temperature, ambient pressure, saturated with water vapour - CTM critical thermal maximum - FN2 fractional concentration of nitrogen - PA CO2or PL CO2 alveolar or lung CO2 pressure - PAO2or PLO2 alveolar or lung O2 pressure - PIO2 inspired O2 pressure - R respiratory exchange ratio - STPD standard temperature, standard pressure, dry - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - VA alveolar ventilation - VA/VCO2 relative alveolar ventilation (alveolar ventilation per unit of CO2 removed) - VO2 O2 uptake - VCO2 CO2 output - V D anatomical dead space volume - V D physiological dead space volume - VE/VO2 ventilatory equivalent for O2 - VE pulmonary ventilation or expiratory minute volume - VE/VCO2 ventilatory equivalent for CO2 - V T tidal volume  相似文献

Patterns and energetic consequences of spontaneous daily torpor were measured in the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) under natural conditions of ambient temperature and photoperiod in a dry deciduous forest in western Madagascar. Over a period of two consecutive dry seasons, oxygen consumption (VO2) and body temperature (T b) were measured on ten individuals kept in outdoor enclosures. In all animals, spontaneous daily torpor occurred on a daily basis with torpor bouts lasting from 3.6 to 17.6 h, with a mean torpor bout duration of 9.3 h. On average, body temperatures in torpor were 17.3±4.9°C with a recorded minimum value of 7.8°C. Torpor was not restricted to the mouse lemurs’ diurnal resting phase: entries occurred throughout the night and arousals mainly around midday, coinciding with the daily ambient temperature maximum. Arousal from torpor was a two-phase process with a first passive, exogenous heating where the T b of animals increased from the torpor T b minimum to a mean value of 27.1°C before the second, endogenous heat production commenced to further raise T b to normothermic values. Metabolic rate during torpor (28.6±13.2 ml O2 h–1) was significantly reduced by about 76% compared to resting metabolic rate (132.6±50.5 ml O2 h–1). On average, for all M. murinus individuals measured, hypometabolism during daily torpor reduced daily energy expenditure by about 38%. In conclusion, all these energy-conserving mechanisms of the nocturnal mouse lemurs, with passive exogenous heating during arousal from torpor, low minimum torpor T bs, and extended torpor bouts into the activity phase, comprise an important and highly adapted mechanism to minimize energetic costs in response to unfavorable environmental conditions and may play a crucial role for individual fitness. During the first day of hatching, the developing chicken embryo internally pips the air cell and relies on both the lungs and chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) for gas exchange. Our objective in this study was to examine respiratory and cardiovascular responses to acute changes in oxygen at the air cell or the rest of the egg during internal pipping. We measured lung (O2lung) and CAM (O2CAM) oxygen consumption independently before and after 60 min exposure to combinations of hypoxia, hyperoxia, and normoxia to the air cell and the remaining egg. Significant changes in O2total were only observed with combined egg and air cell hypoxia (decreased O2total) or egg hyperoxia and air cell hypoxia (increased O2total). In response to the different O2 treatments, a change in O2lung was compensated by an inverse change in O2CAM of similar magnitude. To test for the underlying mechanism, we focused on ventilation and cardiovascular responses during hypoxic and hyperoxic air cell exposure. Ventilation frequency and minute ventilation (VE) were unaffected by changes in air cell O2, but tidal volume (VT) increased during hypoxia. Both VT and VE decreased significantly in response to decreased PCO2. The right-to-left shunt of blood away from the lungs increased significantly during hypoxic air cell exposure and decreased significantly during hyperoxic exposure. These results demonstrate the internally pipped embryo's ability to control the site of gas exchange by means of altering blood flow between the lungs and CAM.  相似文献

New models were developed for predicting the resting metabolic rate (RMR) with sufficient accuracy for use in epidemiologic studies and for weight control of individuals. For this purpose, the RMR of 213 women and 76 men was measured, and physical measurements were taken. The RMR was regressed on correlates of RMR, avoiding harmful degrees of collinearity by rejecting interregressor correlations exceeding r=0.5. For women, the best model (R2=0.71) included the regressors age, race, weight, pulse rate, smoking, and body temperature. The best model for males (R2 = 0.81) included age, race, weight, blood pressure, smoking, time (of day the RMR was measured), and whether subjects had a meal prior to calorimetry. The models were cross validated internally and also validated using an external database. In both cases, the mean estimated RMR did not differ significantly from the measured RMR. The accuracy of the models was compared with four models reported in the literature, three of which overestimated the RMR by up to 17%. In conclusion, improved RMR prediction models have been developed, more accurate than existing models, rendering them suitable for application to epidemiological databases and for individual weight control programs.  相似文献

Closed-system respirometry is a standard technique used to determine aerobic metabolism of aquatic organisms. Open-top systems are rarely used due to concerns of gas exchange across the air–water interface. Here, we evaluated an open-top respirometry system by comparing the mass-specific routine metabolic rate (RMR) of the tropical diadromous finfish barramundi, Lates calcarifer, in both closed-top and open-top respirometers. The RMR of 190?g barramundi was determined across broad temperatures ranging from 18 to 38?°C. There was no significant difference in RMR between barramundi in either closed- or open-top respirometers at any temperature (p?>?0.05). To ensure RMR measurements were not an artifact of the respirometry system, barramundi were reciprocally transplanted into either respective closed-top or open-top respirometer and oxygen consumption re-measured at each temperature treatment. The RMR of transplanted barramundi was found to be virtually identical in either respirometer. RMR increased linearly with increasing temperature; the relationship between RMR and temperature (T; 18–38?°C) can be described as 3.658T?36.294?mg?O2?kg?0.8?h?1. The daily energetic cost of RMR was 1.193T?11.838?kJ?kg?0.8?day?1. Q10 for barramundi increased significantly with increasing temperature (p?Q10(18–28) was the lowest at 1.7 and Q10(28–38) the highest at 1.9, over the whole experiment temp range Q10(18–28) was 1.8. The current study demonstrates that open-top respirometry is a reliable and practical alternative to closed-top respirometry for accurate determination of the aerobic metabolism of barramundi and has potential application for a number of different aquatic organisms.  相似文献

We calculated carbon budgets for a chronosequence of harvested jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands (0‐, 5‐, 10‐, and~29‐year‐old) and a~79‐year‐old stand that originated after wildfire. We measured total ecosystem C content (TEC), above‐, and belowground net primary productivity (NPP) for each stand. All values are reported in order for the 0‐, 5‐, 10‐, 29‐, and 79‐year‐old stands, respectively, for May 1999 through April 2000. Total annual NPP (NPPT) for the stands (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) was 0.9±0.3, 1.3±0.1, 2.7±0.6, 3.5±0.3, and 1.7±0.4. We correlated periodic soil surface CO2 fluxes (RS) with soil temperature to model annual RS for the stands (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) as 4.4±0.1, 2.4±0.0, 3.3±0.1, 5.7±0.3, and 3.2±0.2. We estimated net ecosystem productivity (NEP) as NPPT minus RH (where RH was calculated using a Monte Carlo approach as coarse woody debris respiration plus 30–70% of total annual RS). Excluding C losses during wood processing, NEP (Mg C ha?1 yr?1±1 SD) for the stands was estimated to be ?1.9±0.7, ?0.4±0.6, 0.4±0.9, 0.4±1.0, and ?0.2±0.7 (negative values indicate net sources to the atmosphere.) We also calculated NEP values from the changes in TEC among stands. Only the 0‐year‐old stand showed significantly different NEP between the two methods, suggesting a possible mismatch for the chronosequence. The spatial and methodological uncertainties allow us to say little for certain except that the stand becomes a source of C to the atmosphere following logging.  相似文献

Sex differences in running economy (gross oxygen cost of running, CR), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic threshold (Than), percentage utilization of aerobic power (% VO2max), and Than during running were investigated. There were six men and six women aged 20–30 years with a performance time of 2 h 40 min over the marathon distance. The VO2max, Than, and CR were measured during controlled running on a treadmill at 1° and 3° gradient. From each subject's recorded time of running in the marathon, the average speed (v M) was calculated and maintained during the treadmill running for 11 min. The VO2 max was inversely related to body mass (m b), there were no sex differences, and the mean values of the reduced exponent were 0.65 for women and 0.81 for men. These results indicate that for running the unit ml·kg–0.75·min–1 is convenient when comparing individuals with different m b. The VO2max was about 10% (23 ml·kg–0.75·min–1) higher in the men than in the women. The women had on the average 10–12 ml·kg–0.75·min–1 lower VO2 than the men when running at comparable velocities. Disregarding sex, the mean value of CR was 0.211 (SEM 0.005) ml·kg–1·m–1 (resting included), and was independent of treadmill speed. No sex differences in Than expressed as % VO2max or percentage maximal heart rate were found, but Than expressed as VO2 in ml·kg–0.75·min–1 was significantly higher in the men compared to the women. The percentage utilization of f emax and concentration of blood lactate at v M was higher for the female runners. The women ran 2 days more each week than the men over the first 4 months during the half year preceding the marathon race. It was concluded that the higher VO2max and Than in the men was compensated for by more running, superior CR, and a higher exercise intensity during the race in the performance-matched female marathon runners.  相似文献

Green tea is purported to promote weight loss. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and the thermic effect of feeding (TEF) are significant components of total daily energy expenditure and are partially determined by the sympathetic nervous system via catecholamine‐mediated stimulation of β‐adrenergic receptors. Epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate (EGCG: the most bioactive catechin in green tea) inhibits catechol‐O‐methyltransferase, an enzyme contributing to the degradation of catecholamines. Accordingly, we hypothesized that short‐term consumption of a commercially available EGCG supplement (Teavigo) augments RMR and TEF. On two separate occasions, seven placebo or seven EGCG capsules (135 mg/capsule) were administered to 16 adults (9 males, 7 females, age 25 ± 2 years, BMI 24.6 ± 1.2 kg/m2 (mean ± s.e.)). Capsules (three/day) were consumed over 48 h; the final capsule was consumed 2 h prior to visiting the laboratory. Energy expenditure (ventilated hood technique) was determined at rest and for 5 h following ingestion of a liquid meal (caloric content: 40% RMR). Contrary to our hypothesis, RMR was not greater (P = 0.10) following consumption of EGCG (6,740 ± 373 kJ/day) compared with placebo (6,971 ± 352). Similarly, the area under the TEF response curve (Δ energy expenditure) was also unaffected by EGCG (246,808 ± 23,748 vs. 243,270 ± 22,177 kJ; P = 0.88). EGCG had no effect on respiratory exchange ratio at rest (P = 0.29) or throughout the TEF measurement (P = 0.56). In summary, together RMR and TEF may account for up to 85% of total daily energy expenditure; we report that short‐term consumption of a commercially available EGCG supplement did not increase RMR or TEF.  相似文献

Venous blood flow was measured for the first time in a cephalopod. Blood velocity was determined in the anterior vena cava (AVC) of cuttlefish S. officinalis with a Doppler, while simultaneously, ventilatory pressure oscillations were recorded in the mantle cavity. In addition, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was employed to investigate pulsatile flow in other major vessels. Blood pulses in the AVC are obligatorily coupled to ventilatory pressure pulses, both in frequency and phase. AVC peak blood velocity (vAVC) in animals of 232 (± 30 SD) g wet mass at 15°C was found to be 14.2 (± 7.1) cm s−1, AVC stroke volume (SVAVC) was 0.2 (± 0.1) ml stroke−1, AVC minute volume (MVAVC) amounted to 5.5 (± 2.8) ml min−1. Intense exercise bouts of 1–2 min resulted in 2.2-fold increases in MVAVC, enabled by 1.6-fold increments in both, AVC pulse frequency (f AVC) and vAVC. As increases in blood flow occurred delayed in time by 1.7 min with regard to exercise periods, we concluded that it is not direct mantle cavity pressure conveyance that drives venous return in this cephalopod blood vessel. However, during jetting at high pressure amplitude (> 1 kPa), AVC blood flow and mantle cavity pressure pulse shapes completely overlap, suggesting that under these conditions, blood transport must be driven passively by mantle cavity pressure. MRI measurements at 15°C also revealed that under resting conditions, f AVC and ventilation frequency (f V) match at 31.6 (± 2.1) strokes min−1. In addition, rates of pulsations in the cephalic artery and in afferent branchial vessels did not significantly differ from f AVC and f V. It is suggested that these adaptations are beneficial for high rates of oxygen extraction observed in S. officinalis and the energy conserving mode of life of the cuttlefish ecotype in general.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory abilities, which may play a role in physiological adaptations, were compared between two field mouse species (Apodemus mystacinus and A. hermonensis) from Mount Hermon. While A. hermonensis is common at altitudes above 2100 m, A. mystacinus is common at 1650 m. The following variables were compared in mice acclimated to an ambient temperature of 24°C with a photoperiod of 12L:12D, body temperature during exposure to 4°C for 6 h, O2 consumption and body temperature at various ambient temperature, non-shivering thermogenesis measured as a response to a noradrenaline injection, and the daily rhythm of body temperature. Both species could regulate their body temperature at ambient temperatures between 6 and 34°C. The thermoneutral zone for A. mystacinus lies between 28 and 32°C, while for A. hermonensis a thermoneutral point is noted at 28°C. Both species increased O2 consumption and body temperature as a response to noradrenalin. However, maximal VO 2 consumption as an response to noradrenaline and non-shivering thermogenesis capacity were higher in A. mystacinus, even though A. hermonensis is half the size of A. mystacinus. The body temperature rhythm in A. hermonensis has a clear daily pattern, while A. mystacinus can be considered arhythmic. The results suggest that A. hermonensis is adapted to its environment by an increase in resting metabolic rate but also depends on behavioural thermoregulation. A. mystacinus depends more on an increased non-shivering thermogenesis capacity.Abbreviations C thermal conductance - NA noradrenaline - NST non-shivering thermogenesis - OTC overall thermal conductance - RMR resting metabolic rate - STPD standard temperature and pressure dry - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - I b Min minimal T b , measured before NA iniection - T b NA maximal - T b as a response to NA injection - T lc lower critical point - TNP thermoneutral point - TNZ thermoneutral zone - VO2 O2 consumption - VO2 Min minimal VO2 measured before NA injection - VO2NA maximal VO2, as a response to NA injection  相似文献

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) may be a suitable crop for the bio‐economy as it requires low inputs while producing a high and valuable biomass yield. With the aim of understanding the physiological basis of hemp's high resource‐use efficiency and yield potential, photosynthesis was analysed on leaves exposed to a range of nitrogen and temperature levels. Light‐saturated net photosynthesis rate (Amax) increased with an increase in leaf nitrogen up to 31.2 ± 1.9 μmol m?2 s?1 at 25 °C. The Amax initially increased with an increase in leaf temperature (TL), levelled off at 25–35 °C and decreased when TL became higher than 35 °C. Based on a C3 leaf photosynthesis model, we estimated mesophyll conductance (gm), efficiency of converting incident irradiance into linear electron transport under limiting light (κ2LL), linear electron transport capacity (Jmax), Rubisco carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), triose phosphate utilization capacity (Tp) and day respiration (Rd), using data obtained from gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at different leaf positions and various levels of incident irradiance, CO2 and O2. The effects of leaf nitrogen and temperature on photosynthesis parameters were consistent at different leaf positions and among different growth environments except for κ2LL, which was higher for plants grown in the glasshouse than for those grown outdoors. Model analysis showed that compared with cotton and kenaf, hemp has higher photosynthetic capacity when leaf nitrogen is <2.0 g N m?2. The high photosynthetic capacity measured in this study, especially at low nitrogen level, provides additional evidence that hemp can be grown as a sustainable bioenergy crop over a wide range of climatic and agronomic conditions.  相似文献

Data on thermal energetics for vespertilionid bats are under-represented in the literature relative to their abundance, as are data for bats of very small body mass. Therefore, we studied torpor use and thermal energetics in one of the smallest (4 g) Australian vespertilionids, Vespadelus vulturnus. We used open-flow respirometry to quantify temporal patterns of torpor use, upper and lower critical temperatures (T uc and T lc) of the thermoneutral zone (TNZ), basal metabolic rate (BMR), resting metabolic rate (RMR), torpid metabolic rate (TMR), and wet thermal conductance (C wet) over a range of ambient temperatures (T a). We also measured body temperature (T b) during torpor and normothermia. Bats showed a high proclivity for torpor and typically aroused only for brief periods. The TNZ ranged from 27.6°C to 33.3°C. Within the TNZ T b was 33.3±0.4°C and BMR was 1.02±0.29 mlO2 g−1 h−1 (5.60±1.65 mW g−1) at a mean body mass of 4.0±0.69 g, which is 55 % of that predicted for a 4 g bat. Minimum TMR of torpid bats was 0.014±0.006 mlO2 g−1 h−1 (0.079±0.032 mW g−1) at T a=4.6±0.4°C and T b=7.5±1.9. T lc and C wet of normothermic bats were both lower than that predicted for a 4 g bat, which indicates that V. vulturnus is adapted to minimising heat loss at low T a. Our findings support the hypothesis that vespertilionid bats have evolved energy-conserving physiological traits, such as low BMR and proclivity for torpor.  相似文献
