The effects of drugs on punished responding depend on interactions among a large number of experimental variables. Among these variables are the drug history of the animal, the dose of the drug administered, the type of stimulus used to punish responding, the intensity and duration of the punishing stimulus, the schedule of presentation of the punishing stimulus, the control rate and pattern of punished responding, the schedule of positive reinforcement maintaining the punished responding, the species of animal, the deprivation state of the animal, the behavioral history of the animal, and the nature of the required response. Although it is not known how all of these variables interact to determine the effect of drugs on punished responding, there is evidence that many of these variables are important as determinants of drug effects. The task facing behavioral pharmacologists studying drug effects on punished responding is to determine under what conditions drugs produce their characteristic effects on punished responding.  相似文献

To examine superstitious responding, four pigeons key pecked under multiple concurrent variable-interval 45 s variable-interval 90 s concurrent variable-interval 90 s variable-interval 180 s schedules in the absence of a changeover delay. The two variable-interval 90 s schedules then were replaced by extinction, and key-peck responding during extinction was examined as a function of the prevailing reinforcement rate. During the first several sessions, extinction-key responding was maintained closer to baseline levels in the presence of the higher reinforcement rate, and this effect dissipated or even reversed with continued exposure to extinction. Although extinction-key responding generally decreased to near-zero levels after several sessions, in a few instances, it continued for 30 and 45 sessions. These results demonstrate how concurrent variable-interval extinction schedules can be used to investigate what often has been labeled superstitious responding.  相似文献

Microcosms were prepared with subsurface material from two aquifers to examine the effects of preparation methods on rates of toluene biodegradation under denitrifying conditions. In both cases, the data fit a zero-order kinetics plot. However, rates of removal were generally proportional to initial toluene concentrations, resulting in similar half-lives. Increasing the solid/liquid mass ratio resulted in decreased lag times in one aquifer material, although in both cases the specific toluene mass removal rate (g toluene g sediment −1 day−1) also decreased. Varying either the initial toluene concentrations or the solid/liquid ratios by two to three orders of magnitude resulted in a half-life variation of only a factor of two, with most of the differences occurring at the extreme ranges of the test variables. These data indicate that similar biodegradation rates might be expected from microcosms prepared with different contaminant concentrations and solid/liquid ratios, which is useful for design of microcosm studies to evaluate biodegradation at field sites. A total of 5000 1-group cod of Northeast Arctic and Norwegian coastal origin were reared under similar conditions, anchor tagged and released at two sites in western Norway. There were significantly more recaptures from the coastal cod. No differences in migration patterns were detected, suggesting that mortality rates were higher in North-east Arctic cod.  相似文献

Improvement of ethanol fermentation under hyperbaric conditions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recently more and more interest is manifested in the utilization of high-pressure extraction using supercritical gases for the purification of products in biochemical processes. Some researchers have examined the possibility of circulating continuously a supercritical gas through the fermentor, under hyperbaric pressure, to recover the desired product while the fermentation is taking place. However, an earlier study has demonstrated that fermentation with baker's yeast was inhibited by a long exposure under hyperbaric pressure. This article is concerned with the improvement of ethanol production under hyperbaric pressure in view of the development of an integrated fermentation-extraction process where supercritical carbon dioxide would be used for the in situ recovery of ethanol. The selection of the best yeast strain and operation under cyclic pressures are considered.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have deficits in proprioceptive awareness, 20 TMD patients were compared with 20 nonpain individuals matched to the TMD patients on age and gender. Left and right frontalis, masseter, and temporalis were monitored, as were forearm extensor, heart rate, and skin conductance while the participants viewed a nonstressful film segment. Following the film segment, participants provided self-reports of these physiological responses. This sequence was repeated for a second, stressful film segment and for a third, non-stressful film segment. Correlations between physiological activity and self-report were used as measures of proprioceptive awareness. The results indicated that TMD subjects were most accurate in their awareness of facial muscle activity during the stress condition and least accurate in the two nonstress periods. Control subjects increased their accuracy of awareness at each time period, showing significantly greater accuracy than the TMD group in the last, nonstress period. TMD subjects more accurately perceived activity of the nonfacial muscle variables in the two nonstress periods than during the stress period. These findings may provide a mechanism for understanding clinical observations showing that TMD patients with myofascial pain engage in high levels of parafunctional oral activity without awareness.Portions of this study were supported by the Weldon Spring Foundation and by a grant from the National Institute of Dental Research (DE 11017). Although the typical genomic and phenotypic changes that characterize the evolution of organisms under the human domestication syndrome represent textbook examples of rapid evolution, the molecular processes that underpin such changes are still poorly understood. Domesticated yeasts for brewing, where short generation times and large phenotypic and genomic plasticity were attained in a few generations under selection, are prime examples. To experimentally emulate the lager yeast domestication process, we created a genetically complex (panmictic) artificial population of multiple Saccharomyces eubayanus genotypes, one of the parents of lager yeast. Then, we imposed a constant selection regime under a high ethanol concentration in 10 replicated populations during 260 generations (6 months) and compared them with propagated controls exposed solely to glucose. Propagated populations exhibited a selection differential of 60% in growth rate in ethanol, mostly explained by the proliferation of a single lineage (CL248.1) that competitively displaced all other clones. Interestingly, the outcome does not require the entire time-course of adaptation, as four lineages monopolized the culture at generation 120. Sequencing demonstrated that de novo genetic variants were produced in all propagated lines, including SNPs, aneuploidies, INDELs and translocations. In addition, the different propagated populations showed correlated responses resembling the domestication syndrome: genomic rearrangements, faster fermentation rates, lower production of phenolic off-flavours and lower volatile compound complexity. Expression profiling in beer wort revealed altered expression levels of genes related to methionine metabolism, flocculation, stress tolerance and diauxic shift, likely contributing to higher ethanol and fermentation stress tolerance in the evolved populations. Our study shows that experimental evolution can rebuild the brewing domestication process in ‘fast motion’ in wild yeast, and also provides a powerful tool for studying the genetics of the adaptation process in complex populations.  相似文献

A research project was initiated to examine the possibility of using supercritical carbon dioxide for in situ recovery of ethanol during its production by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As a preliminary step, it was necessary to study the behavior of ethanol production under high-pressure conditions, up to 7 MPa (1000 psi). The results show that pressure has a significant inhibiting effect on the production of ethanol. There is a significant decrease in the initial rate of production as well as in the final ethanol concentration as pressure is increased. This decrease is more significant when carbon dioxide is used to pressurize the fermentor. The pressure affects the ability of the cells to produce ethanol in a reversible way. When the fermentor is returned to atmospheric conditions, the reaction resumes its normal fermentation rate.  相似文献

Transitive responding in humans and non-human animals has attracted considerable attention because of its presumably inferential nature. In an attempt to replicate our earlier study with crows [Lazareva, O.F., Smirnova, A.A., Bagozkaja, M.S., Zorina, Z.A., Rayevsky, V.V., Wasserman, E.A., 2004. Transitive responding in hooded crows requires linearly ordered stimuli. J. Exp. Anal. Behav. 82, 1-19], we trained pigeons to discriminate overlapping pairs of colored squares (A+ B-, B+ C-, C+ D-, and D+ E-). For some birds, the colored squares, or primary stimuli, were followed by a circle of the same color (feedback stimuli) whose diameter decreased from A to E (Ordered Feedback group); these circles were made available to help order the stimuli along a physical dimension. For other birds, all of the feedback stimuli had the same diameter (Constant Feedback group). In later testing, novel choice pairs were presented, including the critical BD pair. The pigeons' reinforcement history with Stimuli B and D was controlled, so that the birds should not have chosen Stimulus B during the BD test. Unlike the crows, the pigeons selected Stimulus B over Stimulus D in both ordered and Constant Feedback groups, suggesting that the orderability of the post-choice feedback stimuli did not affect pigeons' transitive responding. Post hoc simulations showed that associative models [Wynne, C.D.L., 1995. Reinforcement accounts for transitive inference (TI) performance. Anim. Learn. Behav. 23, 207-217; Siemann, M., Delius, J.D., 1998. Algebraic learning and neural network models for transitive and non-transitive responding. Eur. J. Cogn. Psychol. 10, 307-334] failed to predict pigeons' responding in the BD test.  相似文献

Sixteen rats received eight 1-h sessions of a tandem fixed-ratio 1 differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior 30-s schedule with reinforcer magnitude at one or six food pellet(s) across groups of eight rats. The larger reinforcer magnitude established the lever press more effectively. First, mean schedule completions differed across groups, in terms of both their overall difference and in their increase across sessions. Second, whereas the larger reinforcer magnitude established reliable response acquisition in all eight rats by the end of the experiment, the smaller reinforcer magnitude only established reliable response acquisition in four of eight rats. The present results systematically replicate earlier findings obtaining more reliable response acquisition with unsignaled delayed reinforcement with greater food deprivation. Taken together, this work demonstrates the influence of motivational variables on response acquisition with unsignaled delayed reinforcement.  相似文献

Voluntary ethanol consumption (20% solution) in mice of C57BL/6J strain with different experience in social agonistic confrontations was studied. It has been shown, that aggressive males daily winning other individuals did not change the level of ethanol consumption, while the submissive mice with daily experience of defeat in intermale encounters dramatically increased that level. Ethanol enhanced the behavioural reactivity of submissive animals to other individuals. It was supposed that emotionally positive or negative states differentiate the ethanol motivations in mice.  相似文献

Explants and cells of nervous tissue were cultivated in the presence of aethanol, tween 80, dimethylformamid (DMF) and dimethylsulfoxid (DMSO) and the influence upon the index of area, the growth rate and fiber index was observed. They are important to solutions of drugs for tests in vitro. At the beginning of the cultivation aethanol in vitro influenced the regeneration of nerve fibers from explants and cells. A significant increase of the index of growth was observed. After a long term influence of tween 80, DMF and DMSO an inhibition of differentiation of neurons in vitro was observed.  相似文献

This experiment replicated previous demonstrations that interposing a brief stimulus between reinforced responses and the presentation of the reinforcer reduces responding maintained by intermittent reinforcement schedules. Furthermore, we could find no significant difference between the relative size of the reduction during training on ratio and interval schedules when the predictive significance of the response and stimulus was controlled by a yoking procedure.  相似文献

Summary Candida tropicalis converts xylose to ethanol under aerobic, but not anaerobic, conditions. Ethanol production lags behind growth and is accelerated by increased aeration. Adding xylose to active cultures stimulates ethanol production as does serial subculture in a medium containing xylose as a sole carbon source.Maintained in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.  相似文献

Araucaria angustifolia is an endangered species that occurs in the high and cold regions of southern Brazil. This species has economic importance due to its wood and seeds, as well as playing a fundamental ecological role for the southern fauna and flora. Climate change can affect its distributional area and conservation, making it urgent to investigate the effect of climate on its development. The objective of our study was to investigate how growth rates of A. angustifolia vary in relation to interannual precipitation, temperature, frost and snowfall events. For this purpose, we used two samples obtained from each of 33 individual trees from a forest fragment on the Santa Catarina plateau, Brazil. Classical dendrochronological methods were applied for the preparation and dating of the samples. The tree rings were measured using specialized software. Superposed Epoch analysis was used to test the snow accumulation events. The climatic variables were tested by means of a correlation analysis. The Superposed Epoch analysis was used to test the snow accumulation events. Our results indicate that the species shows significant sensitivity to the climate, with the maximum and minimum absolute temperatures respectively correlated with positive and negative growth rates. Snowfall also reduced growth of A. angustifolia. Overall, extreme cold events are threats to the conservation of the species.  相似文献
