The Activity Approach and Psychology

Some of the most essential and currently promising achievements in the psychology of the 1930s, resulting from the application of the methodological principle of the unity of consciousness and activity, are here discriminated and analyzed. The starting conditions for a child's mastery of speech on the basis of initially practical communicative contacts with adults and material objects are set forth; these conditions have been ignored by cultural-historical theory and by nonactivity approaches. It is concluded that speech is not an activity. The relation between activity and behavior is examined.     

Bacterial Resistance to Nanosilver: Molecular Mechanisms and Possible Ways to Overcome them

This review contains the results of experimental studies of recent years dedicated to the resistance of bacteria to the action of nanosized silver and describes the putative molecular mechanisms of its development. Emphasis is placed on the study of works devoted to the investigation of the mechanisms of the resistance of bacteria to silver ions, which are the main factor of the bactericidal action of nanoparticles. The review also contains suggestions for further research aimed at developing of ways to overcome the problem of resistance of individual bacterial strains to the action of nanosilver and methods preventing its further spread.

This article investigates the notebook kept by Lev Vygotsky during the first half of 1926. In addition to discussing the notebook's structure, content, and time frame, the article analyzes its significance within the context of the development of Vygotsky's ideas. Among the notebook's content discussed here are: supplementary material to The Psychology of Art; a preliminary outline for "The Historical Meaning of the Crisis in Psychology"; the first propositions of cultural-historical theory associated with the idea of sign mediation; an outline for the unwritten monograph "Zoon politikon"; as well as thoughts on a general psychological theory of consciousness that assigns a key role to speech and communication in the genesis of consciousness. Particular attention is paid to Vygotsky's remarks on the ontological status of mental reality and the problem of the psychophysical.     

Thinking and Ways of Investigating It

The thought process, of course, breaks down into different elements. Thus, in problem solving, analysis articulates what is given (known) and what unknown; and analysis of information in accordance with the requirements of the particular problem leads to identification of the conditions constituting what is known and what is unknown. Each element of the thought process, viewed from the perspective of the result achieved, is a unitary act (a mental action, an operation). However, in studying thought we must not forget that what makes each element a unitary act is the objectively determined and explicit end result of the thought process. What is initial and primary are not these operations, but the integral thought process of which they are discrete constituents.     

The Psychology Underlying the Art Activity Program

The author investigates the condition of a public school's arts education program under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and obtains teachers' perspectives on their experiences under the federal policy. The author used qualitative and quantitative approaches to conduct a case study of an Ohio public school district. The data collected revealed changes in the arts education curriculum, particularly in music. Teacher interviews provided the context in which the changes occurred and a more accurate representation of the decrease in arts learning opportunities and the challenges that exist for arts education funding under NCLB. The information illustrated how administrative decisions made to improve test scores and accommodate policies mandated by NCLB threatened arts education.     

Problems in the Psychology of Activity

My purpose today is to sum up a number of the postulates concerning activity as it is used in psychology, without introducing any new ones; and I shall do this with the following in mind. Until now I have used a system of concepts I proposed earlier with respect to an analysis of activity; of course, I should like to work out a position, first and foremost my own, on this system, and to reexamine it. On the other hand, I should like to pose a number of questions, such as: Is this system of concepts of any significance, i.e., is it able to work in psychology? Obviously, this system must be developed, which essentially has not been done in recent years. This system of concepts is frozen, without any movement. I personally was quite alone in this respect. All movement takes place with regard to various problems contiguous with the problem of activity, some more, some less; but in my opinion, the concept of activity has been developed highly unsatisfactorily. That is why I thought I should try, today, to sum up very briefly what I think is important.

Hans Driesch and the problems of "normal psychology". Rereading his Crisis in Psychology (1925)

In 1925, the German biologist and philosopher Hans Driesch published a booklet entitled The Crisis in Psychology. It was originally published in English and was based on lectures given at various universities in China, Japan and the USA. The "crisis" in psychology of that time, in Driesch's opinion, lies in the necessity to decide about "the road which psychology is to follow in the future". This necessity refers to five "critical points", namely (1) to develop the theory of psychic elements to a theory of meaning by phenomenological analysis, (2) the overcoming of association theory, (3) to acknowledge that the unconscious is a fact and a "normal" aspect of mental life, (4) to reject "psychomechanical parallelism" or any other epiphenomenalistic solution of the mind-body problem, and (5) the extension of psychical research to new facts as described by parapsychology, for instance. Driesch saw close parallels between the development of modern psychology and that of biology, namely in a theoretical shift from "sum-concepts" like association and mechanics, to "totality-concepts" like soul and entelechy. The German translation of 1926 was entitled Grundprobleme der Psychologie (Fundamental Problems of Psychology) while "the crisis in psychology" forms just the subtitle of this book. This underlines that Driesch's argumentation--in contrast to that of Buehler--dealt with ontological questions rather than with paradigms.     

A Possible Approach to Comparison of Survival Functions

Special numerical index for comparison of survival functions is proposed. The index is called by directed probabilistic semimetric. The examples of these semimetrics are presented. The procedure of the index estimating on sampled data is considered.     

Possible Ways of Spreading and Evolution of Alcids

Based on the published data, a hypothesis is proposed on possible ways of spreading of the Alcids from the center of their primary radiation located in the Pacific. The Alcids colonized the Atlantic first in the Early–Middle Miocene. They rounded North America from the south: at that time, the strait between the Americas was open, while the Bering Strain was closed. Later, in the Late Miocene, Late Pliocene, and Pleistocene, exchange of species between the Atlantic and Pacific took place through the periodically opening Bering Strait.     

Melanoma Prevention: Is It Possible to Change a Population's Behavior in the Sun?

With the highest incidence and mortality rates of melanoma in the world, Australia has been running carefully designed primary prevention programs for more than 10 years. These have included public education programs aimed at all ages but concentrating particularly on young people. The programs have also included structural changes such as provision of shade in open space, rescheduling work and sport activities, removal of sales tax from approved sunscreens, and provision of cheap sunscreens. There have been substantial changes in knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about melanoma, sunlight, and suntans. There have been significant increases in sun protective behavior reflected in the reduced proportions of people sunburnt at the weekend in summer in recent years. The incidence rate of melanoma continues to rise, as expected. Although there has been considerable success so far, we still have a long way to go.     

Dihydrophenanthrene Dimers: Why and Where It Is Possible to Isolate Their Precursors

An interesting class of compounds of natural origin is dihydrophenanthrene dimers, which are characterized by a series of remarkable biological properties. Considering the hypothesis that each dimer is obtained through a biosynthetic mechanism that involves the coupling of the corresponding radicals of the single dihydrophenanthrene unit, we identified 29 dihydrophenanthrenes. Of these dihydrophenanthrenes, 11 were new compounds that could be isolated from 10 different plant species; 11 had already been identified, but not yet isolated in the 17 different plant species from which the corresponding dimers had been isolated; and 7 were known and had been isolated in the same plant sources of the corresponding dimers. A targeted analysis of several natural extracts from specific plant sources would allow the identification of known or new molecules with potential and/or specific biological activities and, in a final analysis, would confirm the relative biosynthetic mechanism.

The dilemma of true and untrue knowledge is not simply ancient, though it has not found any generally acknowledged understanding even today: it is also not merely logical or especially philosophical, but in its many particular manifestations (truth—untruth, truth and error, truth and falsehood; "the bitter truth" and "good intentions"; "base truths" and "edifying deception"; the search for the path to "divine truth" and the immersion of mankind in "golden" sleep; probity and dishonesty) decidedly pervades all forms of social consciousness, and is posed continually and acutely to every person in the course of his life, particularly in the professional activity of a psychologist in any area of specialization.
