The former Soviet Union conducted a nuclear test program in the Semipalatinsk region of northeastern Kazakhstan in 1949-1989. The population in the vicinity of the test site was chronically exposed to radiation fallout, especially from above-ground tests during 1949-1956. Male:female sex ratio has been proposed as a measure of reproductive health, with some reports suggesting an alteration in the sex ratio of offspring of parents exposed to radiation. We investigated the impact of radiation exposure and other factors on the sex ratio in the population inhabiting the exposed region. A total of 11,464 singleton births of 3,992 mothers exposed to radiation during 1949-1956 were analyzed. The overall sex ratio was 1.07, similar to the current sex ratio in Kazakhstan (1.06). The sex ratio increased from 1.04 where mothers received <20.0 cSv to 1.12 where mothers received > or =60.0 cSv. However, the linear trend across exposures was not significant (P = 0.42). No consistent association was found between the sex ratio and the time since parental radiation exposure, parental age at exposure, or year of birth. Sex ratio was significantly associated with maternal age, birth order and possibly ethnicity but not with paternal age, parental educational level or season. In conclusion, no significant association was found between radiation exposure level and sex ratio, but some previously suggested demographic factors were positively associated with sex ratio.  相似文献

We have previously described a nonpolar form of radioimmunoassayable serum testosterone (NPT) not measured by available antitestosterone antibodies. It is detected by mild alkaline hydrolysis of the petroleum ether extract of serum and subsequent radioimmunoassay. The properties of NPT are consistent with that of a fatty acid ester of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone. The serum of young males contains 1 to 3 ng/ml NPT, but it is not detected in female serum. We measured serum testosterone and NPT levels in 36 men between 58 and 87 years of age. Seventeen subjects with advanced prostatic cancer (NPT 1.70 +/- 1.44 ng/ml) were compared with a control group consisting of six patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and 13 patients with no prostatic disease (NPT 0.72 +/- 0.46, P = 0.017). There was no significant difference between BPH patients and patients with no prostatic disease; the results were pooled. The concentration of NPT in prostatic cancer patients but not in controls was inversely correlated with that of testosterone. Immunoassayable testosterone was present in the serum of two orchiectomized patients and, therefore, cannot derive solely from the testes.  相似文献

Male to female ratio (sex ratio, SR) for 1,329 liveborns with Down syndrome and for 178,160 newborns from the general population of St. Petersburg, Russia was determined as a function of a mother age. Male prevalence (an overall SR of 1.24) was found in children with all trisomy 21 variants except the cases with mosaicism (the ratio of 0.88). The most expressed male predominance was determined in children of mothers aged 20-24 years, where SR was 1.73 in the total group (p = 0.00003) and 1.61 in the cases with free trisomy (p = 0.0007). Some hypotheses concerning the male accumulation in this group are discussed including a suggestion that the SR deviations from the population value 1.06 might be due to different contribution of paternal chromosomal non-disjunction during spermatogenesis.  相似文献

In these studies, 10 patients with a confirmed histological diagnosis of stage C and D carcinoma underwent double-freezing of the prostate. The clinical courses in the first group (five patients) were favorable. In the second group (two patients), death by cachexia occurred due to the cancer. In the third group (three patients), death 4 weeks after the second cryosurgery suggests the effects of cryoshock. In the first and second groups, the results of the immunological examinations after the second freezing did not attain the predicted levels. Comparing the results of the third group with those of the first and second groups the primary differences was that the percentages of gamma-globulins and IgE were higher in the third group preoperatively. These findings suggest that patients with high percentages of gamma-globulin and high IgE levels are contraindicated for cryosurgery of the prostate.  相似文献

Data from 55 publications providing the sex ratio (SR), i.e. ratio between male and female cases of Down syndrome (DS), are presented. In general, SR was skewed toward an excess of males in the majority of studied populations, either in populations with a high level of cases ascertainment (epidemiological studies) or in selected groups. No significant correlation involving the age of either patients or mothers was found. Some other factors which might influence the sex ratio in DS at birth are mentioned. Meta-analysis of data from epidemiological studies suggests the phenomenon is not restricted to free trisomy 21 alone but appears in translocation cases, both in mutant and inherited translocation carriers (SR = 1.31 and 1.36, respectively). In contrast to nonmosaic 47, +21 cases, where SR is close to 1.3, an excess of females was observed in mosaics 46/47, +21 (SR = 0.83). No male predominance was found among patients with DS not tested cytogenetically (SR = 0.98), which may be explained by female predominance in false-positive cases. In populations with a fraction of clinically diagnosed cases of 30% and over, SR has intermediate value of 1.1. The ratio showed a tendency to increase since 1940's, reaching a mean value of 1.35 in 1980's varying from 1.3 to 1.62 in different populations), which might be a consequence of the growing use of karyotyping to confirm diagnosis and of a real increase in proportion of males. In the 1990's, the ratio fell to 1.22 varying from 1.03 to 1.27. As SR is assumed to reflect a proportion of paternal contribution, the discrepancy between the proportions of paternal errors in cytogenetic studies on parental origin of the extra chromosome (24% in the 1980's) and in molecular studies (5-10% in the 1990's) discussed in the literature might be explained by temporal changes alone. Genetic mechanisms of male predominance in trisomy 21 are reviewed, among them models for joint segregation of chromosome 21 and Y chromosome in spermatogenesis, and the chromosome 21 nondisjunction during 2nd meiotic division of oogenesis caused by Y chromosome-bearing spermatozoa.  相似文献

Skewing of the sex ratio towards males occurs in humans. The possible explanation for excess male births could be a preference for Y-bearing sperm at fertilization and/or selective elimination of female embryos during pregnancy. In this study, we have tested the sex ratio in the preimplantation embryo (2–3 cells stage/closest possible primary sex ratio), the post-implantation embryo (day E7.5), and at birth (secondary sex ratio) on a homogenous (genetic, environmental, and dietary) population of mice to ascertain the biological reason i.e., male preference at fertilization or female elimination during pregnancy or both. Primary sex ratio on early preimplantation embryos (2–3 cells stage) was studied on 598 embryos and secondary sex ratio (at birth) on 721 pups using PCR-based sexing (both X & Y chromosome-specific) besides sex ratio of 80 post-implantation embryos (day E7.5). We have also investigated whether the fat content (high & low) of the diet affects the sex ratio. We observed a skewed sex ratio (more female) in preimplantation embryos (0.436; 95 % CI 0.39, 0.48), and post-implantation embryos (0.462; 95 % CI 0.35, 0.57) but reverse skewing (more male) at birth (0.539; 95 % CI 0.5, 0.58). We also observed that high-fat diet promoted male sex ratio at birth (0.657; 95 % CI 0.57, 0.74) whereas a low-fat diet had the opposite effect (0.46; 95 % CI 0.36, 0.56) but no effect at fertilization (2–3 cells stage embryos). This indicates selective elimination of female embryo and fetus throughout pregnancy in mice, more so with a high-fat diet.  相似文献

Sex ratio variation in birds   总被引:17,自引:1,他引:16

Significant variation in the sex ratio at hatching is unusual in birds. In contrast, sex differences in juvenile mortality have been found in a variety of species, especially when food is scarce- In some cases, these differences may be a consequence of reduced viability of males when food is scarce but, in others, the available evidence suggests that parental manipulation is involved.  相似文献

Sex ratio variation in mammals   总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
Parents will increase their fitness by varying the sex ratio of their progeny in response to differences in the costs and benefits of producing sons and daughters. Sex differences in energy requirements or viability during early growth, differences in the relative fitness of male and female offspring, and competition or cooperation between siblings or between siblings and parents might all be expected to affect the sex ratio. Although few trends have yet been shown to be consistent, growing numbers of studies have demonstrated significant variation in birth sex ratios in non-human mammals. These are commonly cited as evidence of adaptive manipulation of the sex ratio. However, several different mechanisms may affect the birth sex ratio, and not all of them are likely to be adaptive. Valid evidence that sex ratio trends are adaptive must be based either on the overall distribution of those trends or on cases in which the sex ratio can be shown to vary with the relative fitness of producing sons and daughters. The distribution of observed sex ratio trends does not conform closely to the predictions of any single adaptive theory. Some recent studies, however, indicate that, within species, the sex ratio varies with the costs or benefits of producing male or female offspring.  相似文献

In certain cases, predicted by evolutionary theory of sex-allocation and confirmed by empirical evidence, animals adaptively change their progeny sex-ratio according to individual circumstances. Here we argue that a similar response of offspring sex-ratio must exist in relation to genetic variation of mothers' mitochondria, as a consequence of maternal inheritance of these organelles and of their influence on fitness resulting from their crucial role in metabolism. In fact, a mathematical analysis of evolutionary dynamics of sex-allocation mutants demonstrates that natural selection promotes an evolutionarily stable allocation policy where mothers with defective mitochondria generate only sons, while those with optimal mitochondria have female biased progenies.  相似文献

Males and females frequently have different fitness optima for shared traits, and as a result, genotypes that are high fitness as males are low fitness as females, and vice versa. When this occurs, biasing of offspring sex-ratio to reduce the production of the lower-fitness sex would be advantageous, so that for example, broods produced by high-fitness females should contain fewer sons. We tested for offspring sex-ratio biasing consistent with these predictions in broad-horned flour beetles. We found that in both wild-type beetles and populations subject to artificial selection for high- and low-fitness males, offspring sex ratios were biased in the predicted direction: low-fitness females produced an excess of sons, whereas high-fitness females produced an excess of daughters. Thus, these beetles are able to adaptively bias sex ratio and recoup indirect fitness benefits of mate choice.  相似文献

2nd to 4th digit ratio and offspring sex ratio   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There is evidence that the ratio of the length of the 2nd and 4th digit (2D:4D) is negatively related to prenatal and adult concentrations of testosterone. It has also been reported that high levels of testosterone at conception in both fathers and mothers are associated with an increased sex ratio (proportion of males at birth). It follows from these observations that low values of 2D:4D may be related to high sex ratio. We present evidence from three populations (English, Spanish and Jamaican) that 2D:4D is negatively related to sex ratio, independent of the sex and ethnicity of the parents.  相似文献

Liver function of patients with cancer of the prostate gland was studied while they were receiving oestrogen therapy. When synthetic oestrogens were given, raised values of serum aspartate and alanine amino-transferase (S.G.O.T. and S.G.P.T.) were found in about 30–50% of them. As treatment continued the increased values usually returned to normal levels. No serious liver damage was observed, though the serum bilirubin content rose temporarily in some patients.  相似文献

The sex ratio of the avian malaria parasite, Plasmodium gallinaceum, was examined during the course of infection in its natural host, the chicken. Infections can have two possible outcomes: death of the host resulting from anaemia or self-cure and survival. In lethal infections the sex ratio remained female biased throughout, whereas in self-curing infections, the sex ratio became progressively less female biased. We examined the consequences of altering sex ratio for parasite transmission success using a theoretical fertilisation model and hypothesise that an immune response specifically effective against the male gametes would provide a selective explanation for the observed sex ratio adjustment. Previous studies have demonstrated that there is an efficient anti-gamete antibody response as an infection is cleared by the host. We performed in vitro mosquito infection studies comparing mosquito infection rates with naive serum replacement and showed that decomplemented serum from curing infections is transmission blocking, whereas serum from lethal infections is not. We discuss aspects of the malaria parasite-host interaction which might provide the selective pressure for such observed sex ratio adjustment.  相似文献
