Back projection methods are used to predict the yearly number of new AIDS diagnoses and the number of new HIV infections, to the end of 1992. The AIDS, but not the HIV, predictions are insensitive to the choice of incubation period distribution. A wide range of predictions is consistent with the AIDS diagnoses in years up to 1987, but limited ancillary information on the relative rates of new HIV infection in 1984 to 1987 can be used to narrow this range. The range of prediction based on AIDS reports to the end of 1988 is lower and narrower than the range based on reports to the end of 1987. The number of new AIDS cases in 1992 appears likely to fall in the range 1000-3000.  相似文献

Salient dreams are often discussed and ruminated upon over time, especially when they feature in dream work or therapy. The present study investigated the effects of rehearsal over time on dream memories, as compared to memories for waking experiences. Participants were instructed to complete a dream and waking episodic event diary over two weeks. A rehearsal group (n = 27) were instructed to read through their reports after recording them. A control group (n = 28) were instructed not to look at their reports. A surprise recall task demonstrated that rehearsal reduced significantly the detail of dream, but not waking event, reports. It maintained episodic richness for dreams. Furthermore, rehearsed dream and event reports corresponded significantly more closely with original reports than controls. These data indicate that while rehearsal may not increase dream recall over time, it may influence the phenomenology of memories that are subsequently recalled, such that a rehearsed memory is subsequently recalled, rather than the original experience. Current WHO reports on the Asian avian influenza virus outbreaks are poignant reminders of the potential for the emergence of highly virulent strains of influenza A virus (IAV) and the fact that it remains a scourge on human health. As IAV drifts and shifts its genetic and antigenic composition, it presents an ever-changing challenge for vaccines and antiviral medications. Short-interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are the latest class of potential antiviral therapeutics to be developed. Recent reports using siRNAs in mice suggest that they hold great promise for the prevention and treatment of IAV infections.  相似文献

This study, conducted among Tsimane women of Bolivia, investigates the relationship between reputational reports and ratings of individual attractiveness. Reputations are, at least in part, created and maintained through linguistic avenues between group members and are thus open to manipulation by others. Taking this into account, we hypothesized that individuals might have the ability to influence the attractiveness of others indirectly by influencing their reputations. The data collected among Tsimane women show that reporting positive or negative information about other group members significantly predicts the rankings of attractiveness assigned to those group members. We found that characteristics surrounding motherhood, trustworthiness, housekeeping abilities, social intelligence, and wealth or status to be the most influential reputational reports on attractiveness. We found that reports of promiscuity had no significant affect on perceived attractiveness. Overall, the results demonstrate that attractiveness ratings reflected a significant reputational component.  相似文献

BackgroundLimb-salvage surgery for primary bone sarcomas are preceded by X-ray and MRI for surgical planning. However, the accuracy of X-ray and MRI predicted margins are not well described. Our study examined these questions: (1) How accurately do X-ray and MRI margin measurements reflect the true margin on pathology reports? (2) Do X-ray or MRI margin measurements have smaller differences compared to pathology reports? (3) How many X-ray or MRI margin measurement differences were greater than 1 cm, 2 cm, and 3 cm from pathology reports? (4) Is there an X-ray or MRI view that consistently results in a smaller difference from pathology reports?MethodsThis retrospective chart review examined patients with primary bone sarcoma treated with limb-salvage surgery. Reviewers used electronic measurement tools to determine margins from X-ray or MRI based on the resection length of the pathologic specimen. Mean differences of margin measurements to pathology reports were calculated. We determined outliers of imaging margin measurements at 1 cm, 2 cm, and 3 cm differences to pathology reports.ResultsIn the total cohort of 39 patients, the mean difference of X-ray and MRI margins compared to pathology reports were 1.09 cm (st dev 0.79 cm) and 0.71 cm (st dev 0.70 cm), respectively. MRI margin measurements had smaller differences compared to pathology reports than X-ray in 32 of 38 cases (84%) with complete imaging. X-ray outliers at 1 cm, 2 cm, and 3 cm differences were 36, 14 and 2 respectively for 70 margin measurements and MRI outliers at 1 cm, 2 cm, and 3 cm differences were 17, 6, and 0 respectively for 66 margin measurements. The views with the smallest difference were anterior-posterior X-rays and MRI views with the closest predicted margin.ConclusionElectronic MRI margin measurements with the closest predicted margin provided the smallest differences with pathology reports and are therefore the most accurate for preoperative planning. When there is adequate residual diaphysis for reconstructive fixation, surgeons should plan for a 3 cm bone margin using MRI measurements to ensure complete removal of the intramedullary extent of sarcoma.Level of Evidence: IV  相似文献

The synthesis of nanoparticles (NP) using algae has been underexploited and even unexplored. In recent times, there are few reports on the synthesis of NP using algae, which are being used as a bio-factory for the synthesis. Moreover, the algae are a renewable source, so that it could be effectively explored in the green synthesis of NP. Hence, this review reports on the biosynthesis of NP especially gold and silver NP using algae. The most widely reported NP from algae are silver and gold than any other metallic NP, which might be due to their enormous biomedical field applications. The NP synthesized by this method is mainly in spherical shape; the reports are revealing the fact that the cell free extracts are highly exploited for the synthesis than the biomass, which is associated with the problem of recovering the particles. Besides, mechanism involving in the reduction and stabilization is well demonstrated to deepen the knowledge towards enhancement possibilities for the synthesis and applications.  相似文献

Abstract: Medicinal plants are an important local resource for the Washambaa of the Western Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. In this study the Washambaa medicinal plants are inventoried. It is based on ethnobotanical fieldwork carried out over 15 months. This study presents for the first time an analysis of medicinal plants used in Africa with a ranking of these taxa by the frequency of their reported use. A total of 328 taxa were collected and yielded 2260 individual use reports. The most popular species are Myrica salicifolia and Toddalia asiatica. Subsequently, the use reports were arranged into 9 groups of medicinal uses based on the types of illness treated. The F actor of I nformant C onsensus (FIC) is used in order to evaluate the ethnobotanical importance of the plants. The largest number of plants and of use reports are in the group of gastrointestinal disorders. For the most commonly used taxa, an ethnopharmacological evaluation was performed. Studies to evaluate the Washambaa therapeutic claims as well as toxicological data are still lacking for many of the species. This study will form the basis for pharmacological and phytochemical research on selected Washambaa medicinal plants.  相似文献

While there have been many reports investigating the biological activity and signaling mechanisms of isoprostanes, their role in biology, particularly in platelets, appears to still be underestimated. Moreover, whether these lipids have their own receptors is still debated, despite multiple reports that discrete receptors for isporpstanes do exist on platelets, vascular tissues, amongst others. This paper provides a review of the important literature of isoprostanes and provides reasoning that isoprostanes should be classified as orphan ligands until their receptor(s) is/are identified.  相似文献

Ventricular septal rupture is a serious complication of myocardial infarction with an extremely poor outcome. There are single reports of transcatheter closure of postmyocardial septal defects and clinical experience is limited. This paper reports on a successful staged transcatheter closure of two chronic postmyocardial defects using the Amplatzer septal occluder in a 52-year-old male.  相似文献

Synopsis A list of published references on the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae is provided. All known publications in the scientific literature are included as well as popular articles and press reports that are considered to provide new information or interpretations. Marked trends are noticeable in the literature as different disciplines have been applied to research on the coelacanth over the past five decades. The bibliography lists a total of 823 publications including 490 papers in journals, 37 books, 3 theses, 45 chapters in books, 166 popular articles, 22 reports and 60 newspaper articles. Studies on taxonomy and morphology initially dominated the literature followed by reports on research in the fields of physiology, behaviour, breeding biology, ecology and conservation as frozen and eventually live specimens became available for study. The literature on the living coelacanth is predominantly in English, French, Japanese and German but references in 12 other languages were also traced. The dominant authors in the first decades of coelacanth research were the French scientists J. Millot and J. Anthony and the South African describer of the first and second coelacanths, J.L.B. Smith. In subsequent years French, British, American, South African, Japanese, Canadian and German authors, among others, have made significant contributions.  相似文献

This work comprises 24 reports of chromosome numbers in 24 Artemisia L. species from Asia. Ten are included in the subgenus Dracunculus Besser and the rest belong to other subgenera. Seven counts are new reports, 14 are consistent with scarce previous ones, and three contribute new ploidy levels. That carried out in A. medioxima reports the highest ploidy level ever counted for the genus (16 x ). There is only one species with x  = 8 as the basic chromosome number. Fifty general practice annual reports were reviewed with a checklist to determine how much information was commonly included and whether they described the patients, the practice, and practice activity. The reports varied widely: important information was sometimes missing, practice activity was measured in different ways, and terms were often not defined. About half the reports reviewed did not draw conclusions or suggest plans for the future. Annual reports should include comparable basic information about patients, the practice, and the practice activity to optimise their usefulness in evaluation, planning, and decision making. Many relevant data are available from family practitioner committees and district health authorities.  相似文献

GM crops are the most studied crops in history. Approximately 5% of the safety studies on them show adverse effects that are a cause for concern and tend to be featured in media reports. Although these reports are based on just a handful of GM events, they are used to cast doubt on all GM crops. Furthermore, they tend to come from just a few laboratories and are published in less important journals. Importantly, a close examination of these reports invariably shows methodological flaws that invalidate any conclusions of adverse effects. Twenty years after commercial cultivation of GM crops began, a bona fide report of an adverse health effect due to a commercialized modification in a crop has yet to be reported.  相似文献

Some problems with the quality of controlled clinical trials can be addressed by following these procedures: registering all trials at inception; using systematic reviews to inform the design of new studies; posting and obtaining feedback on preprints; reporting all well conducted trials, regardless of their results; reducing biased and inefficient assessment of reports submitted for publication; publishing sufficiently detailed reports; linking trial reports to relevant external information; providing readier access to reports; and reviewing and amending reports after initial publication. The launch of a new range of electronic journals by Current Controlled Trials offers an opportunity to contribute to progress in these ways.  相似文献

The use of thermal based therapies for treatment of atrial fibrillation is increasing. While numerous reports are available in the literature regarding the efficacy of cryotherapy on pulmonary vein survival, there are no reports specifically at the cellular level that establish thermal thresholds and mechanisms of cellular destruction. The current article reports on the response of HL-1 cardiomyocytes to cooling rates and end temperatures during cryothermal exposure. The focus is on establishment of in vitro thresholds while also establishing mechanisms of action due to biophysical events (i.e. intracellular ice formation and water transport).  相似文献

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction (NTP-CERHR) was established by the NTP and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in 1998 to address the impact of chemical exposures on human reproductive and developmental health and to serve as an environmental and reproductive health resource for government agencies and the general public. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the Center activities and a summary of NTP conclusions on chemicals evaluated during this time period. CERHR evaluations involve the critical review of reproductive, developmental, and other relevant toxicity data by independent panels of scientists. The products of these evaluations are expert panel reports. The public has opportunities to provide oral comments at the panel meeting and written comments on draft and final expert panel reports. The NTP evaluates these comments, the conclusions of the expert panel, and any new data not available at the time of the panel meeting, and prepares an NTP brief that describes in plain language the NTP's conclusions on the reproductive and developmental hazard from specified chemical exposures. The NTP brief, expert panel report, and public comments comprise the NTP monograph on the chemical. Monographs are sent to federal regulatory agencies, the NTP Executive Committee, and the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors, and are publicly available. Over the last five years, CERHR conducted expert panel evaluations on 14 chemicals. At this time, 13 panel reports have been published and 12 NTP-CERHR monographs have been issued. Additionally, CERHR conducted a 2-day workshop on the role of thyroid hormones in reproductive and developmental health.  相似文献

The ozone molecule contains three atoms of oxygen and is mainly formed by the action of the ultraviolet rays of the sun on the diatomic oxygen molecules in the upper part of the Earth's atmosphere (called the stratosphere). Atmospheric pollution near the Earth's surface can form localized areas of ozone. The stratospheric ozone layer protects life on Earth by absorbing most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In the mid 1970s it was discovered that some manmade products destroy ozone molecules in the stratosphere. This destruction can result in damage to ecosystems and to materials such as plastics. It may cause an increase in human diseases such as skin cancers and cataracts. The discovery of the role of the synthetic ozone-depleting chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) stimulated increased research and monitoring in this field. Computer models predicted a disaster if no action was taken to protect the ozone layer. Based on this research and monitoring, the nations of the world took action in 1985 with the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer followed by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. The Convention and Protocol were amended and adjusted several times as new knowledge was obtained. The Meetings of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol appointed three Assessment Panels to review the progress in scientific knowledge on their behalf. These panels are the Scientific Assessment Panel, the Technological and Economic Assessment Panel and the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel. Each panel covers a designated area and there is a natural level of overlap. The main reports of the Panels are published every four years as required by the Meeting of the Parties. All the reports have an executive summary that is distributed more widely than the main report itself. It became customary to add a set of questions and answers--mainly for non-expert readers--to the executive summaries. This document contains the questions and answers prepared by experts who comprise the Environmental Assessment Panel. It is based mainly on the 2006 report of the Panel but also contains information from previous assessments. Readers who need detailed information on any question should consult the full reports for a more complete scientific discussion. This set of questions refers mainly to the environmental effects of ozone depletion and climate change. The report of the Scientific Assessment Panel contains questions and answers related to the other scientific issues addressed by that Panel.
