To further understand the mechanics of trees under dynamic loads, we recorded damped oscillations of a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) tree and of its stem without branches. Eigenfrequencies of the branches were calculated and compared to the oscillation frequency of the intact tree. The term eigenfrequency is used here to characterize the calculated resonance frequency of a branch fixed at the proximal end to a solid support. All large branches had nearly the same frequency as the tree. This property is a prerequisite for the distribution of mechanical energy between stem and branches and leads to an enhanced efficiency of damping. We propose that trees constitute systems of coupled oscillators tuned to allow optimal energy dissipation.  相似文献

In this paper the effects of the occurrence of cut trees in the topological analysis of branching patterns have been studied. It is assumed that branches are removed at random from the trees. Under certain basic assumptions the branching pattern of dendrites can be modeled as a Galton-Watson process in varying environment. Using results from graph theory we compute the probability distributions, expectations and variances for biologically significant variables such as the number of (intermediate and terminal) branches, the maximum number of orders, etc., together with the limit behavior of these quantities. Furthermore, the probability measure induced by the Galton-Watson process on the set of all trees is calculated. The measure assigns to any set of branching patterns the probability that it is realized by a certain process, which is completely described through the bifurcation probabilities.  相似文献

To determine the degree to which herbivory contributes to phenotypic variation in autumn phenology for deciduous trees, red maple (Acer rubrum) branches were subjected to low and high levels of simulated herbivory and surveyed at the end of the season to assess abscission and degree of autumn coloration. Overall, branches with simulated herbivory abscised ~7 % more leaves at each autumn survey date than did control branches within trees. While branches subjected to high levels of damage showed advanced phenology, abscission rates did not differ from those of undamaged branches within trees because heavy damage induced earlier leaf loss on adjacent branch nodes in this treatment. Damaged branches had greater proportions of leaf area colored than undamaged branches within trees, having twice the amount of leaf area colored at the onset of autumn and having ~16 % greater leaf area colored in late October when nearly all leaves were colored. When senescence was scored as the percent of all leaves abscised and/or colored, branches in both treatments reached peak senescence earlier than did control branches within trees: dates of 50 % senescence occurred 2.5 days earlier for low herbivory branches and 9.7 days earlier for branches with high levels of simulated damage. These advanced rates are of the same time length as reported delays in autumn senescence and advances in spring onset due to climate warming. Thus, results suggest that should insect damage increase as a consequence of climate change, it may offset a lengthening of leaf life spans in some tree species.  相似文献

This study compared the effects of shading individual branches or whole trees on the survival, growth and reproduction of branches of mountain birch [Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii (Orlova) Hämet-Ahti]. When a single branch was shaded its performance decreased drastically, while individual branches performed relatively well if the whole tree was shaded. For instance, after two summers 90% of the individually shaded branches were dead, while none of the study branches died following shading of entire trees. These results indicate that the fate of a branch depended more on shading-induced asymmetric competition among branches than on the shading itself. Furthermore, the increased growth of non-shaded branches in the trees where only two branches were shaded suggests that resources were preferentially allocated to branches in more favorable positions. Branch autonomy may promote environmental screening and growth towards favorable directions, optimizing the use of available light resources. In addition, branch autonomy may buffer the genet against environmental hazards, thus increasing the fitness of the genet at the cost of an increased mortality for individual modules.  相似文献

SymmeTREE implements several tests of differential diversification rates that exploit information on the topological distribution of species diversity throughout entire trees to address two general questions: (1) Has a given tree experienced significant variation in diversification rates among its branches? and (2) If so, along which branches have significant shifts in diversification rate occurred? These explicitly model-based methods are robust to uncertainty in estimates of branch length/duration and can accommodate incompletely resolved trees and other forms of phylogenetic uncertainty.  In this study a comparison of the canopy architecture and the growth and distribution of roots was made in 10-year-old trees of Hevea brasiliensis grown in a severely drought-prone area on the west coast of India under rainfed and irrigated conditions. LAI and light interception increased significantly in the irrigated compared to the rainfed trees. Girth and height of the tree were 29 and 19% more while width and height of the canopy were 19 and 20% more in the irrigated than rainfed trees. There were 22% more primary branches which had 26% more diameter in the irrigated trees than rainfed trees. The branches were inserted on the main trunk at an angle of 58.36° in the irrigated and 44.22° in rainfed trees. The above changes led to more light penetration which altered the light distribution inside the rainfed trees during summer and inhibited leaf photosynthesis particularly in the top canopy leaves. In the rainfed trees most of the growth occurred during the short favorable season immediately after the monsoon between June and October and no growth or even shrinking of the trunk was seen during summer. In the irrigated trees a higher growth was seen throughout the year and summer had no adverse effect. Although there was some difference in the root distribution pattern, the total root density per unit soil volume did not vary between the irrigated and rainfed trees. Within-tree variability in leaf characteristics of the mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa) was bioassayed for the autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) by rearing larvae on birch leaves in a laboratory and measuring their growth, consumption rate, approximate digestibility, efficiency of conversion of ingested food and efficiency of conversion of digested food. Only short shoot leaves, i.e. leaves of the same age, were used. The highest hierarchical level, which included trees and ramets within trees, accounted for most of the total variance in almost all the measured traits. Short shoots (within branches) accounted for more of the variance than branches (within trees/ramets) in most of the traits. The results suggest that differences in leaf quality were reflected in larval growth mainly by differences in food utilization efficiencies (postingestive effects) and less by differences in consumption rate (preingestive effects). The observed within-tree variation is probably a consequence of the modular structure, sectoriality and partial functional independence of tree parts.  相似文献

Due to its speed, the distance approach remains the best hope for building phylogenies on very large sets of taxa. Recently (R. Desper and O. Gascuel, J. Comp. Biol. 9:687-705, 2002), we introduced a new "balanced" minimum evolution (BME) principle, based on a branch length estimation scheme of Y. Pauplin (J. Mol. Evol. 51:41-47, 2000). Initial simulations suggested that FASTME, our program implementing the BME principle, was more accurate than or equivalent to all other distance methods we tested, with running time significantly faster than Neighbor-Joining (NJ). This article further explores the properties of the BME principle, and it explains and illustrates its impressive topological accuracy. We prove that the BME principle is a special case of the weighted least-squares approach, with biologically meaningful variances of the distance estimates. We show that the BME principle is statistically consistent. We demonstrate that FASTME only produces trees with positive branch lengths, a feature that separates this approach from NJ (and related methods) that may produce trees with branches with biologically meaningless negative lengths. Finally, we consider a large simulated data set, with 5,000 100-taxon trees generated by the Aldous beta-splitting distribution encompassing a range of distributions from Yule-Harding to uniform, and using a covarion-like model of sequence evolution. FASTME produces trees faster than NJ, and much faster than WEIGHBOR and the weighted least-squares implementation of PAUP*. Moreover, FASTME trees are consistently more accurate at all settings, ranging from Yule-Harding to uniform distributions, and all ranges of maximum pairwise divergence and departure from molecular clock. Interestingly, the covarion parameter has little effect on the tree quality for any of the algorithms. FASTME is freely available on the web.  相似文献

This study tests the hypotheses that (1) the above-ground structure of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L] Karst.) is derivable from the functional balance theory, and that (2) crown ratio is a key source of structural variation in trees of different age and social position. Twenty-nine trees were measured in three stands (young, middle-aged, and mature), with three thinning treatments (unthinned, normal, and intensive) in the two older stands. There was a strong linear relationship between the total cross-sectional area of branches and that of stem at crown base. Foliage mass was linearly related with stem basal area at crown base. Also an allometric relationship was found between foliage mass and crown length. The mean length (weighted by basal area) of branches obeyed an exponential function of crown length. The parameters of most of these relationships were independent of slenderness (tree height/breast height diameter) and tree age However, total branch cross-sectional area per stem cross-sectional area in the young trees was greater than in the older trees. The young trees also had slightly shorter branches than predicted by the mean branch length equation. This was probably caused by branch senescence which had not yet started in the young stand. The older trees had a relatively long lower crown segment which was growing slowly and senescing. It was proposed that a segmented crown structure is characteristic of shade tolerant tree species, and that the structural model could be further developed by making the two segments explicit.  相似文献

To gain a better understanding of the effects of spatial structure on patterns of neighbourhood competition among hardwood trees, the three-dimensional extension of primary branches was surveyed for ten community-grown Castanea crenata (Fagaceae) trees with respect to the positioning of neighbouring branches and the slope of the forest floor. There were significantly more branches extending towards the lower side of the slope than towards the upper side, but structural properties such as branch length and vertical angle were not affected by slope. When horizontal extension of a branch towards its neighbour was compared for a C. crenata branch and a neighbouring heterospecific, the former was significantly narrower than the latter when the inter-branch distance (horizontal distance between the base positions of two neighbouring branches) was short (< approx. 5 m). Castanea crenata branches tended to extend in a direction avoiding neighbouring branches of heterospecifics when the inter-branch distance was short. Furthermore, for an inter-branch distance <3 m, the horizontal extension of a C. crenata branch was less when it was neighbouring a heterospecific branch than when neighbouring a conspecific branch. These results suggest that horizontal extension of C. crenata branches is more prone to spatial invasion by nearby neighbouring branches of heterospecifics, and that the invasion can be lessened when C. crenata trees are spatially aggregated. The reason why such an arrangement occurs is discussed in relation to the later leaf-flush of C. crenata compared with that of other species in the forest.  相似文献

Summary: Newly mated queens of the arboreal ant Crematogaster ashmeadi initiate colonies in old beetle galleries in the dead branches of longleaf pine trees. In a study by Hahn (1996), a number of tree characteristics were correlated with the number of newly-mated queens in those trees, with branch length the best indicator of queen presence. Three of these characteristics, tree height, dead branch length, and the number of dead branches were tested in an experiment to see which, if any, the queens were using to choose a tree. Both tree height and the number of dead branches significantly influenced queen choice: shorter trees (4-5 m) had more queens than tall ones (7-9 m), and trees with 8 branches had significantly more queens than trees with 2 branches. Branch length had no effect on the number of queens. These findings suggest that newly mated Crematogaster ashmeadi queens search for founding trees on the basis of the height of a sapling and its number of dead branches. The spatial distributions of many tropical arboreal ant species are often arranged in a mosaic such that dominant species have mutually exclusive distributions among trees. These dominant species can also mediate the structure of the rest of the arboreal ant community. Little attention has been paid to how diet might shape the effects of dominant species on one another and the rest of the ant community. Here, we take advantage of new information on the diets of many tropical arboreal ant species to examine the intra- and inter-guild effects of dominant species on the spatial distribution of one another and the rest of the tropical arboreal ant community in a cocoa farm in Bahia, Brazil. Using null model analyses, we found that all ant species, regardless of dominance status or guild membership, co-occur much less than expected by chance. Surprisingly, the suite of five dominant species showed random co-occurrence patterns, suggesting that interspecific competition did not shape their distribution among cocoa trees. Across all species, there was no evidence that competition shaped co-occurrence patterns within guilds. Co-occurrence patterns of subordinant species were random on trees with dominant species, but highly nonrandom on trees without dominant species, suggesting that dominant species disassemble tropical arboreal ant communities. Taken together, our results highlight the often complex nature of interactions that structure species-rich tropical arboreal ant assemblages.  相似文献

Background and Aims

There is good evidence for deciduous trees that competition for carbohydrates from shoot growth accentuates early fruit abscission and reduces yield but the effect for evergreen trees is not well defined. Here, whole-tree tip-pruning at anthesis is used to examine the effect of post-pruning shoot development on fruit abscission in the evergreen subtropical tree macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia, M. integrifolia × tetraphylla). Partial-tree tip-pruning is also used to test the localization of the effect.

Methods

In the first experiment (2005/2006), all branches on trees were tip-pruned at anthesis, some trees were allowed to re-shoot (R treatment) and shoots were removed from others (NR treatment). Fruit set and stem total non-structural carbohydrates (TNSC) over time, and yield were measured. In the second experiment (2006/2007), upper branches of trees were tip-pruned at anthesis, some trees were allowed to re-shoot (R) and shoots were removed from others (NR). Fruit set and yield were measured separately for upper (pruned) and lower (unpruned) branches.

Key Results

In the first experiment, R trees set far fewer fruit and had lower yield than NR trees. TNSC fell and rose in all treatments but the decline in R trees occurred earlier than in NR trees and coincided with early shoot growth and the increase in fruit abscission relative to the other treatments. In the second experiment, fruit abscission on upper branches of R trees increased relative to the other treatments but there was little difference in fruit abscission between treatments on lower branches.

Conclusions

This study is the first to demonstrate an increase in fruit abscission in an evergreen tree in response to pruning. The effect appeared to be related to competition for carbohydrates between post-pruning shoot growth and fruit development and was local, with shoot growth on pruned branches having no effect on fruit abscission on unpruned branches.  相似文献

Cylindrobasidium argenteum, a causal pathogen of white stem blight of a variety of broadleaf trees and shrubs, is thought to be transmitted to healthy trees through contact with infected branches of neighboring trees. To clarify whether basidiospores of C. argenteum are involved in the dispersal and infection process, we investigated distribution of genets of the fungus in a river valley forest using a somatic incompatibility test. Thirty-eight isolates were collected from diseased trees along two census lines at the bottom of Kikuchi River valley in southern Japan. In addition, 50 isolates were collected from four experimental plots on the slope of the valley. When the isolates from the valley bottom were paired in all combinations, a narrow clear zone line appeared in 701 out of 703 pairings, indicating that the material included 36 different genotypes, and suggesting that airborne basidiospores play an important role for dispersal of C. argenteum. In contrast, vegetative spread proved to be more frequent on the slope of the valley. On lower parts of such slopes, opportunities for healthy trees to meet infectious agents may increase because infected broken branches frequently move downwards on the slope. Based on these results, we suggest that C. argenteum adopts following dissemination strategies: (1) it spreads chiefly by basidiospores and infects trees, and (2) after colonizing stems or branches and producing an extensive mycelial mat, secondary infections of adjacent trees occur by contact with infectious agents such as diseased branches.  相似文献

The effects on phylogenetic accuracy of adding characters and/or taxa were explored using data generated by computer simulation. The conditions of this study were constrained but allowed for systematic investigation of certain parameters. The starting point for the study was a four-taxon tree in the "Felsenstein zone," representing a difficult phylogenetic problem with an extreme situation of long branch attraction. Taxa were added sequentially to this tree in a manner specifically designed to break up the long branches, and for each tree data matrices of different sizes were simulated. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed from these data using the criteria of parsimony and maximum likelihood. Phylogenetic accuracy was measured in three ways: (1) proportion of trees that are completely correct, (2) proportion of correctly reconstructed branches in all trees, and (3) proportion of trees in which the original four-taxon statement is correctly reconstructed. Accuracy improved dramatically with the addition of taxa and much more slowly with the addition of characters. If taxa can be added to break up long branches, it is much more preferable to add taxa than characters.  相似文献

In plants with rhythmic growth, a branch segment extended in one event is known as growth unit (GU). GU structure, resulting from the resources allocated to stem length, volume and mass, and to leaf area and mass, is relevant for understanding branch functioning in the context of plant development. This study compares GU structure between main branches and short branches positioned at low and high positions on nursery-grown trees of three closely related genetic entities: Nothofagus nervosa, N. obliqua and natural hybrids between these species. GUs of short branches, compared to those of main branches, had lower length, diameter and number of leaves, and higher specific leaf area (SLA), stem density and proportional mass in leaves than in stems. GUs at high position on the trees had a higher proportion of their mass in stem than in leaves and a lower SLA than those at low position. Stem density was higher for N. nervosa and the hybrid trees than for N. obliqua. Most other GU traits did not differ statistically between the considered genetic entities. The three genetic entities exhibited distinct patterns of variation in leaf size with leaf position along main-branch GUs. The individual tree had a significant effect on most variables. GU structure would have a major ontogenetic component and would play a relevant role in the architecture of Nothofagus species and their adaptation to different environmental conditions.  相似文献

在不同修剪手法下,对栽培桃树(Prunuspersica(L.)Batsch)不同母枝上的分枝模式进行了比较研究.从分枝模式来看:修剪后的母枝基本由3个不同的区域组成,基部是不萌发的潜伏芽形成的未分枝区域;中部是延迟分枝和多次分枝组成的分枝区域(主要的枝条类型有短枝、长枝和多次枝);顶部是被剪除的部分.我们通过隐式半马尔可夫模型来模拟这一分枝模式,主要是定量描述1次枝和多次枝在母枝上的数量及其分布状况.在上述模型中,未分枝区、延迟分枝区和多次分枝区称为瞬时态,被剪除的部分称为吸收态.模拟的结果与观察的结果进行对比后发现,两者具有很好的一致性.这说明隐式半马尔可夫模型是模拟植物分枝过程的一种有效方法,尽管隐式半马尔可夫链模型只是一个描述性的模型,但仍能对其所描述的生物现象进行解释,在预测修剪手法对母枝分枝模式影响方面比传统的方法具有明显的优势.本研究结果是建立三维虚拟桃树树冠分枝结构的基础.  相似文献
