Hand‐reared grey‐faced petrel (Pterodroma macroptera gouldi) chicks (Order Procellariformes) that were subjected to a standardised blood sampling protocol immediately before they fledged showed a reduced corticosterone response compared to parent‐raised chicks. Serum corticosterone concentrations were lower in hand‐reared than parent‐reared birds 30 and 60 min after handling was initiated (21.5±6.7 vs. 105.4±7.4 ng/ml at 30 min, and 11.3±3.6 vs. 93.8±11.4 ng/ml at 60 min, respectively). The total integrated corticosterone response and the response corrected for initial corticosterone concentrations were similarly lower in hand‐reared than parent‐reared birds (927±489 vs. 4639±1924 ng/ml.min, and 529±352 vs. 4110±1896 ng/ml.min, respectively). Habituation to handling associated with hand‐rearing, which is expressed as a subdued corticostrone response, is likely to reduce the physiological stress associated with the translocation and reintroduction of these birds. However, the longer‐term consequences of this attenuated response remain unclear. Zoo Biol 0:1–8, 2005. © 2005 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Food samples were collected from 29 Herald petrels Pterodroma heraldica , 27 Kermadec petrels P. neglecta and 37 Murphy's petrels P. ultima , on the Pitcairn Islands during 1991. 92% of samples were from chicks. Food items comprised cephalopods (in 86–92% of samples) of 22 species, fish (in 24–41% of samples) of at least four families, crustaceans (in 10–38% of samples) including mysids, an amphipod, an isopod and unidentified decapods, insects– marine water striders Halobates (in 59–66% of samples), coelenterates (in 0–8% of samples), tunicates (in 0–7% of samples), and traces of offal (cetacean or shark), plastics and pumice. Only cephalopods were sufficiendy numerous and identifiable to enable a comparison of the three petrels' diets. Herald petrels mainly fed on juvenile ommastrephids, whereas Murphy's petrels mainly ate vertically-migrating, bioluminescent cranchiids, histioteuthids and onychoteuthids; Kermadec petrels were intermediate between them. Such differences might have resulted from the different dates when, or different islands where, most samples were collected from each species; or differences in feeding ranges or times of feeding between species; or to species' preferences. 相似文献

Abstract Between 2001 and 2006, we systematically sampled the entire coast of Whenua Hou, a rugged offshore island in southern New Zealand, to estimate the population densities of sooty shearwaters (Puffinus griseus) and mottled petrels (Pterodroma inexpectata) by counting the entrances of breeding burrows. A two‐step regression modelling process using binomial errors was used to predict the presence of a colony, and a normal general linear model was used to predict the density of entrances within colonies. Aerial photography, GIS and a Digital Elevation Model were used to extract relevant habitat and location variables, and a combination of both regression models was used to predict the density of breeding burrows within each 5.32 m2 pixel on the island. This complex GIS and habitat prediction modelling approach gave population estimates very similar to a more traditional simple area extrapolation method and gave no improvement in precision. However, correction for the slope of the land increased our simple area estimates of population size by 11%. We estimate populations of sooty shearwater and mottled petrel breeding pairs at 173 000 (162 000–190 000) and 160 000 (123 000–197 000) respectively. Based on this number of breeding pairs, we calculate that Whenua Hou supports a total population of 868 000 (554 000–1 270 000) sooty shearwaters. Our estimate of the total mottled petrel population 202 000 pairs (162 000–242 000) is comparable with the only published estimate, but could be an underestimate because mottled petrels are sometimes found in large burrows. More research for robust estimation of population trends is needed to assess the conservation status of mottled petrels. 相似文献

A table of development (25 stages) for the period of incubation in the pouch was constructed for Gastrotheca riobambae; it can be used to stage embryos of other egg-brooding hylids. Analysis of embryonic weights during incubation shows that the mother does not contribute nutrients, but gases and other factors are probably exchanged between mother and embryos. According to species, incubation on the back of the mother is carried to the froglet or to the tadpole stages. Development in these hylids is characterized by specialized gills, the bell gills derived from the branchial arches. In some species, the bell gills derive from the first branchial arch and cover less than 50% of the embryo, while in others, the bell gills come from both branchial arches I and II and cover from less than 50% to 100% of the embryo. The most complex bell gills derive from the fusion of the two branchial arches. The majority of egg-brooding hylids live in tropical forests and carry development to the froglet stage. Tadpoles are produced by species of Flectonotus, Fritziana, and Gastrotheca. Tadpole-producing species of Gastrotheca have the most complex reproductive adaptations among egg-brooding hylids Acceleration and retardation in development seem to have played important roles in the evolution of these frogs. The evolutionary trend has been toward direct development, i.e., disappearance of the free-living larval stages through maternal incubation, and later to a recovery of the free-living tadpole stages in species of Gastrotheca with the most complex reproductive adaptations. 相似文献

Although susceptibility to scrapie is largely controlled by the PRNP gene, we have searched for additional genomic regions that affect scrapie incubation time in sheep, using two half-sib families with a susceptible PRNP genotype and naturally infected by scrapie. Quantitative trait loci were detected on OAR6 and OAR18. 相似文献

Providing supplemental food to Florida scrub-jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) causes a reliable advance in clutch initiation of 1 to 2 weeks. In some years, supplemental food appeared to not only advance laying date but also decrease baseline concentrations of corticosterone (CORT) relative to controls. The coincidence of low CORT levels and early breeding led us to hypothesize that CORT serves to communicate information about environmental conditions to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which ultimately influences the timing of breeding. To test this hypothesis, we administered small oral doses of CORT three times each day to female breeders that were provisioned with supplemental food. We compared clutch initiation dates of the CORT-dosed females to females with supplementation but no exogenous CORT and to females with neither CORT nor supplemental food. CORT administration had a strong temporary effect on circulating CORT concentrations but clutch initiation did not differ between the two groups of supplemented birds, both of which laid eggs approximately 10 days earlier than nonsupplemented birds. Furthermore, during the year of our study we found no reduction in baseline CORT concentrations in our undosed supplemental groups, as had been observed in past studies. 相似文献

The white-chinned petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) is the seabird most often killed on longlines in the Southern Ocean and is listed as vulnerable to extinction. We estimated the population breeding at the Prince Edward Islands, the last breeding site for the nominate subspecies that lacks a recent population estimate. White-chinned petrel burrows are largely confined to deep, muddy soils, usually on slopes below 200?m, but locally up to 420?m. After correcting for count bias, Marion Island has an estimated 29,900 nests (95?% CI 27,700–32,400). Burrow occupancy rates at the start of the incubation period were 65?% during one-off surveys, but repeat surveys found that at least 73?% of burrows were occupied and 87?% of burrows showed signs of occupancy. This suggests that there were roughly 24,000 occupied nests on Marion Island (95?% CI 20,000–28,000). A more cursory survey on Prince Edward Island yielded 14,700 burrows, suggesting that there are 9,000–15,000 occupied nests. The nominate subspecies of white-chinned petrel occupies approximately 974,200 nests (95?% CI 678,000–1,286,000), with the Prince Edward Islands, the third most important breeding site, after South Georgia and Kerguelen. Assuming that populations breeding at islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans winter in different regions, the impact of fishery bycatch is likely to have had a greater impact on the Indian Ocean population. The Marion Island survey provides a baseline against which future population changes can be assessed. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that despite having a clear seasonal fluctuation in fecal testosterone concentration, the significantly lower testosterone levels found in velvet stags of the nonseasonal breeder muntjac (Muntiacus sp.) apparently did not stop their spermatogenesis as in other deer species. In the present study, in vitro cultivated Leydig cells isolated from adult stags of three native deer species of Taiwan were treated with androstenedione, with or without adding human chorionic gonadotropin. Results showed that, unlike the two seasonal breeders, sika deer (Cervus nippon) and sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), Leydig cells of velvet muntjac had no dramatic reduction in or even maintained the full capability of their testosterone productivity compared with the hard-antlered stage. The decrease in fecal testosterone level observed earlier in muntjac during the velvet period was probably due to a reduction of number of Leydig cells. These results support the hypothesis that testosterone production in muntjac during its velvet period might never be low enough to trigger the quiescent phase of the reproduction cycle. 相似文献

Summary Steroid sulfatase (STS; EC 3.1.6.2) levels were assayed in cultured fibroblasts of root voles captured in the wild. Four independent experiments were performed using two different substrates (DHEAS and E1S). Evidence is presented that in this species, STS levels are significantly higher in males than in females (ratio 1.6:1). We discuss our findings on a comparative basis and suggest that in the root vole the STS gene(s) is X- and Y-linked (as in the mouse) and that it is subject to X-inactivation, or partially so, on one of the X chromosomes in the female. 相似文献

Bird observations were made as part of a preliminary biological survey of the southern half of the Mawson Escarpment in the
southern Prince Charles Mountains, Mac.Robertson Land between 26 January and 4 February 1998. A new breeding colony of snow
petrels (Pagodroma nivea) is described, together with details of individual snow petrel sightings. At 440 km from the coast, the snow petrel colony
is the furthest inland of any confirmed breeding site for this species.

This study investigated the effect of non-ventilation of the incubator during the first 10 days of incubation on carbon dioxide (CO(2)) concentrations in the incubator and its effects on the embryonic and post-hatch development of the chicken (Gallus gallus). Two different incubation conditions were created, one incubator was kept at standard conditions, with adequate ventilation (V) and a second incubator was non-ventilated (NV) during the first ten days of incubation, allowing the CO(2) to rise. After the first 10 days, both incubations were continued under standard conditions. The experiment was repeated twice with different ages of the breeders (45 and 60 wks) which resulted in different CO(2) levels at ED10 (1.5 and 1%). The CO(2) concentration in the V incubators remained below 0.1% in these first 10 days. The eggs of the NV incubation showed higher pCO(2) levels in the air cell from ED10 until ED14 compared to the eggs of the V group. The NV embryos had significantly higher absolute and relative (to egg weight) body weights from ED10 until ED18, pointing to an accelerated embryonic growth. At internal pipping, the NV chick embryos had higher plasma corticosterone and T(3) levels and higher pCO(2) in the air cell. Chicks incubated under NV conditions hatched 10 h earlier in the first and 15 h earlier in the second experiment and the spread of hatch was narrower. During the post-hatch period, the NV chickens had a higher body weight compared to the V chickens. From these results, it is clear that higher levels of CO(2) during the first ten days of incubation have persistent (epigenetic) effects during the incubation and early post-hatch period. 相似文献

Abstract Daily nest checks were used to determine the yellow-eyed penguin’s pattern of nest relief during incubation, and to examine the inter-pair variability in incubation period. Nests at two breeding areas on the Otago Peninsula were visited between September and December in 1985 and 1986. At each visit, status of the nest and the identity and behaviour of the sitting bird was recorded. Incubation is shared between the sexes, with males tending to sit longer than females. Incubation spells ranged from 1–7 days with a mode of 1–2 days. Records of lone incubation following mate death show the yelloweyed penguin to be capable of 15 day unrelieved spells at the nest The incubation period of the yellow-eyed penguin ranges from 39–51 days and is the most variable of all penguins. This variability is because of the failure of some individuals to adequately cover the clutch until up to 5 days after the laying of the second egg. 相似文献

In brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), the male is the primary incubator, a trait that is relatively rare among birds. The maintenance of avian incubation behavior is controlled by the protein hormone prolactin (PRL). Although steroid hormone concentrations in both wild and captive kiwi have previously been reported, this study is the first to report levels of PRL in captive and wild male and female kiwi through the prebreeding and breeding seasons, and to directly compare testosterone (T) concentrations between captive and wild males during the breeding and incubation periods. Female PRL concentrations increased at the time of oviposition, whereas male PRL concentrations rose gradually between the prebreeding and incubation periods. Although males are considered the main incubator, an increase in PRL levels could help females maintain behaviors such as nest guarding, or to take over incubation the event of mate loss. A gradual increase in PRL allows the male to be ready for incubation during the long breeding season. Interestingly, T concentrations in captive males did not decrease during incubation and was significantly higher than in wild males. Continual elevated T could have an impact on sperm production through negative feedback, thereby contributing to the low egg fertility seen in captive kiwi. Therefore, determining the underlying reason for the differences in hormone levels could be significant, if not vital, for improving the success of captive kiwi breeding programs. 相似文献

In this study we assessed the extent of psychological attachment between male cheetahs living in same sex pairs in zoos by recording the behavior and vocalizations of two male coalitions (siblings and nonsiblings) during four experimental separations and reunions of each coalition. Both coalitions showed higher vocalization rates and walking rates during separations than during reunions, and during separations cheetahs spent less time resting and more time vocalizing, walking, or standing than during baseline observations. Compared to the nonsibling coalition, the sibling coalition showed a significantly higher vocalization rate during separations and more affiliative behavior during reunions. The most common calls emitted during separations were chirps, followed by eeaows and stutters. The chirps showed the highest level of individual distinctiveness. Eeaows comprised a significantly higher percentage of the calls during separations for nonsiblings that for siblings. The only vocalization heard during reunion was the stutter. We hypothesize that chirps emitted during separations communicate desire to reunite, individual identity, and have a structure that facilitates locating the caller. The results of this study suggest that male cheetahs, both sibling and nonsibling, develop strong psychological attachments to each other. The separation of existing coalitions can create stressful conditions for coalition members. We suggest that raising and maintaining coalitions of male cheetahs in coalitions in zoos is a viable husbandry technique. Zoo Biol 17:1–16, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献
