Cleistogamy, a breeding system with permanently closed and self-pollinated flowers, is expected to assure reproductive success at a lower cost. Previous studies have inferred the occurrence of cleistogamous flowers in Polygonum, but there are no detailed studies on their reproductive investment compared with that of the chasmogamous flowers in this genus. Here, we studied a cleistogamous morph of P. jucundum to investigate the investment in pollen number, tepal and nectary size. The number of pollen grains per flower was counted with a light microscope. Nectaries and perianths were observed via scanning electron microscope and light microscopy, photographed and measured via ImageJ. The perianths of the cleistogamous flowers, as well as the pollen numbers and nectary sizes, were significantly smaller than those of the chasmogamous flowers. The pollen numbers of the CL flowers were seven times lower than those in the CH flowers. The tepal areas of the CL flowers were, on average, approximately 38% those of the CH flowers. The nectary areas of the CH flowers were almost twice those of the CL flowers. In addition, the nectaries of the cleistogamous flowers were degenerated and inconspicuous, in distinct contrast with the well-developed and conspicuous nectaries of the chasmogamous flowers. Self-fertilization was completed and produced seeds. The cleistogamous P. jucundum, compared with chasmogamous individuals, exhibited lower costs in male function, pollinator attraction and reward structure investment. This cleistogamy appears to be favourable for the plant reproduction under suboptimal conditions.  相似文献

The presence of cleistogamous and chasmogamous flowers on the same plant individual is considered to represent a “mixed” reproductive strategy. If a cleistogamous species also exhibits clonal propagation, then competition for limited resources is assumed to exist among the three reproductive modes. To date, however, the relationships and interactions among cleistogamous, chasmogamous, and clonal modes of reproduction have received little attention. In this study, we performed manipulative experiments to investigate the interactions among these different types of reproduction in the perennial herbaceous plant species Pseudostellaria heterophylla. The results showed that 66.4%–87.6% of individuals produce chasmogamous flowers and that the fruiting rates of these flowers in each surveyed population were between 23.5% and 77.4%. Furthermore, we found that 8.3% of the individuals of this species show inbreeding depression. We also detected significant negative correlations between the production of chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers and between cleistogamous flower production and root tuber mass. However, chasmogamous flower production in an individual plant was found to have little influence on its subsequent clonal propagation. We propose that the plasticity of reproductive strategies observed in P. heterophylla is due to changes in the resource pool and resource allocation.  相似文献

The fairy fan flower, Scaevola aemula R. Br., is a primary candidate insectary plant for maintaining populations of generalist predators. We conducted release experiments in greenhouses of cultivated eggplants to evaluate the effects of intercropping S. aemula on the establishment of flightless Harmonia axyridis Pallas. Compared with a monoculture of eggplant, all release experiments showed that flightless H. axyridis remained in greater numbers in plots with S. aemula planted alongside eggplant. In the release experiment of flightless H. axyridis larvae, the incidence of aphids in the plot with transplanted S. aemula was suppressed compared with that in the release plot without transplanted S. aemula. In a laboratory experiment, the longevity of flightless H. axyridis adults on blossom stems of S. aemula was greater than when open flowers and buds were removed, suggesting that the insects fed on floral resources such as the pollen of S. aemula. Our findings showed that the floral resources of S. aemula can enhance aphid suppression by improving the establishment of flightless H. axyridis.  相似文献

Polygala lewtonii is a federally endangered, amphicarpic plant with a mixed mating system and three types of flowers: (1) aboveground, chasmogamous flowers (i.e., open-pollinated; CH), (2) aboveground, cleistogamous flowers (i.e., closed, selfing; CL) and (3) CL flowers on belowground stems (amphicarpy). Aboveground seeds are ant-dispersed, whereas belowground seeds are spaced across the length of the rhizome. Here, we collected individuals of P. lewtonii at both range-wide and fine geographic scales and genotyped them at 11 microsatellite loci. We analyzed patterns of genetic diversity and structure to understand: (1) the predominant mating system (selfing or outcrossing), (2) the movement of pollen and seeds across the landscape, and (3) the optimal strategy to conserve the full range of genetic variation. P. lewtonii reproduces predominantly by selfing or bi-parental inbreeding, but reproduction occurred through each of the three flower types. Some individuals produced by selfing/inbreeding were tightly clustered spatially, and were likely produced either by belowground flowers or by aboveground flowers with limited seed dispersal. Other selfed/inbred individuals were spatially separated (maximum of 15 m), and were likely produced by aboveground flowers followed by seed dispersal by ants. Fine-scale patterns of genetic structure indicate that some gene flow is occurring among aboveground CH flowers but both pollen and outcrossed seeds are moving limited distances (maximum of 0.5 km). Because genetic variation is structured at a fine spatial scale, protecting many populations is necessary to fully conserve the genetic variation in P. lewtonii. Conservation seed banking, if accompanied by research on seed germination requirements, may also contribute to the effective protection of genetic variation in P. lewtonii.  相似文献

An Eustoma grandiflorum APETALA1 (EgAP1) gene showing high homology to the SQUA subfamily of MADS-box genes was isolated and characterized. EgAP1, containing a conserved euAP1 motif at the C-terminus, showed high sequence identity to Antirrhinum majus SQUAMOSA in the SQUA subfamily. EgAP1 mRNA was detected in the leaf and expressed significantly higher in young flower buds than in mature flower buds. In flowers, EgAP1 mRNA was strongly detected in sepal, weakly detected in petal and was absent in stamen and carpel. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants ectopically expressing EgAP1 flowered early and produced terminal flowers. In addition, the conversion of petals into stamen-like structures was also observed in 35S::EgAP1 flowers. 35S::EgAP1 was able to complement the ap1 flower defects by restoring the defect for sepal formation and significantly increasing second whorl petal production in Arabidopsis ap1 mutant plants. These results revealed that EgAP1 is the APETALA1 homolog in E. grandiflorum and that the function of EgAP1 is involved in floral induction and flower formation.  相似文献

When alien pollinator species enter a native community of pollinators in which resource partitioning has been established, the pollination network between plants and pollinators may be modified through the interactions between the pollinators over the use of floral resources. We observed the floral-use patterns of native (Bombus hypocrita and B. deuteronymus) and alien (B. terrestris) bumblebee species in a coastal grassland in northern Japan. We analyzed the factors determining resource partitioning patterns. B. hypocrita tended to visit flowers with shallow or wide open corollas, such as Rosa rugosa, whereas B. deuteronymus visited flowers with complex or deeper corollas, such as Lathyrus japonicus. Given the wider floral preference of B. terrestris, floral use by the alien bumblebees consistently overlapped with that of native bumblebees. The visitation of B. terrestris to R. rugosa flowers was positively correlated with that of B. hypocrita. These bumblebee species frequently used similar floral resources, in part because of the large overlap in the seasonality of their foraging activity. The visitation frequency of B. deuteronymus to L. japonicus flowers was independent of the visitation frequency of other bumblebee species. The major visitation periods of the bumblebees to L. japonicus flowers reciprocally differed between B. deuteronymus and B. terrestris, suggesting phenological resource partitioning between these species. Our study suggests that phenological niche partitioning is more common in specialized flowers (L. japonicus) than in generalized flowers (R. rugosa).  相似文献

Apolygus lucorum (Heteroptera: Miridae), an important herbivore feeding on a broad range of cultivated and wild plants, always shows a strong preference for flowering host plants. In a prior study, we found A. lucorum fecundity to be higher on flowering plants than on plants still at the vegetative stage. This led us to hypothesize that ovarian development and vitellogenin (Vg) expression in A. lucorum, which are highly correlated with its fecundity, might respond positively to the presence of host plant flowers as food. In this study, two types of plant foods, i.e., cotton terminals and flowers, and cotton terminals only without flowers, were examined. Adult females on terminals with flowers had higher ovarian development levels than those of similar stage held on terminals without flowers. Moreover, adults on terminals with flowers had more follicles per ovary throughout adult life than those held on terminals without flowers, and the length of the most developed ovariole of the former treatment was significantly longer than that of the latter diet. Use of qRT-PCR showed that the expression level of Vg was significantly higher in adults raised on a diet with flowers compared with those raised on the diet without flowers. These results suggest that host plant flowers significantly facilitate ovarian development and Vg gene expression of A. lucorum adults.  相似文献

Cedrus brevifolia is a narrowly distributed conifer species, currently limited to a single mountain in Cyprus, growing in restricted habitats on sites of different densities and sizes. This study assessed the influence of seed and pollen dispersal, as well as the effect of demographic and genetic features on the magnitude of fine-scale spatial genetic structure (SGS). Sampling was performed in 11 plots where 50 neighboring adult trees were sampled from each plot, while biparentally and paternally inherited genomes were used for analysis with microsatellites. Fine-scale SGS was significant but showed contrasting patterns among plots. Although the magnitude of SGS in C. brevifolia mainly results from restricted seed dispersal, short-distance pollen dispersal could also explain fine-scale SGS in some plots, which is rather uncommon in wind-pollinated conifer species. The lack of a general and consistent trend of SGS among plots and between genomes indicates that pollen and seed dispersal varies at plot level. The complex SGS patterns in C. brevifolia may result from the unequal ratio of male and female strobilies of trees within the same plots, at different reproductive periods. Demographic features such as habitat fragmentation did not influence the magnitude of SGS in C. brevifolia, whereas low tree aggregation reduced it. Further, the significant correlation observed between linkage disequilibrium (LD) and plots with significant SGS supports the assumption that under specific conditions, LD is likely to be caused by the magnitude of SGS.  相似文献

Data on differentiation of the polyploid complex of Suaeda corniculata (C.A. Mey.) Bunge in East Siberia based on variability of morphological characteristics, karyological analysis, and genetic polymorphism in inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were given for the first time. It was established that the samples studied belonged to three cytotypes: diploids (2n = 2x = 18), tetraploids (2n = 4x = 36) and hexaploids (2n = 6x = 54). The analysis of variability of morphological characteristics by the method of principal coordinates showed division of the samples into three separate groups. On the basis of morphological and molecular-genetic methods, a genetically differentiated diploid population was revealed in Yakutia.  相似文献

An arthropod deterrent attracts specialised bees to their host plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Many bee species are adapted to just a few specific plants in order to collect pollen (oligolecty). To reproduce successfully, it is important for oligolectic bees to find and recognise the specific host flowers. In this study, we investigated the role of floral volatiles used by an oligolectic bee to recognise its host plants. We compared the attractiveness of natural and synthetic scent samples of host flowers to foraging-naïve and -experienced Hoplitis adunca (Megachilidae) bees that are specialised on Echium and Pontechium (Boraginaceae) plants. The investigations showed that naïve H. adunca females are attracted to 1,4-benzoquinone. During their lifetime, bees learn additional floral cues while foraging on host flowers. In contrast to naïve ones, experienced H. adunca females use, in addition to 1,4-benzoquinone, other compounds to recognise their host plants. 1,4-Benzoquinone is an uncommon floral compound only known from the host plants of H. adunca, and is therefore ideally suited to be used as a plant-specific recognition cue. Several arthropods use this compound to deter insect predators. Therefore, 1,4-benzoquinone as an attractant in Echium flowers may have evolved from a primary function as a defensive compound against insect herbivores.  相似文献

Arabidopsis glucuronokinase (AtGlcAK), as a member of the GHMP kinases family, is implicated in the de novo synthesis of UDP-glucuronic acid (UDP-GlcA) by the myo-inositol oxygenation pathway. In this study, two T-DNA insertion homozygous mutants of AtGlcAK, atglcak-1 and atglcak-2, were identified. AtGlcAK was highly expressed in roots and flowers. There was reduced primary root elongation and lateral root formation in atglcak mutants under osmotic stress. The atglcak mutants displayed enhanced stomatal opening in response to abscisic acid (ABA), elevated water loss and impaired drought tolerance. Under water stress, the accumulation of reducing and soluble sugars was reduced in atglcak mutants, and the metabolism of glucose and sucrose was affected by the synthetic pathway of UDP-GlcA. Furthermore, a reduced level of starch in atglcak mutants was observed under normal conditions. The phylogenetic analysis suggested that GlcAK was conserved in numerous dicots and monocots plants. In short, AtGlcAK mutants displayed hypersensitivity to ABA and reduced root development under water stress, rendering the plants more susceptible to drought stress.  相似文献
