Synopsis This study investigates the role of male mating status in female choice patterns in the carmine triplefin, Axoclinus carminalis, a tripterygiid fish that exhibits paternal care. The distribution of daily reproductive activity is clumped, with many males receiving no mates and some receiving three or more. Females in this species do not prefer larger males, and characteristics of the oviposition site appear to have minimal effects on male mating success. When a female is removed from a male early in the daily spawning period, that male attracts fewer additional females for the remainder of the spawning period than does a control male. These changes in mating success are temporary, and do not affect mating success on subsequent days. A preference for mating males or males that are guarding eggs could provide asymmetric benefits for males to defend oviposition sites. This preference for males with eggs could be acting alone or with other factors such as high variance in oviposition site quality to favor the evolution of paternal care in fishes.

Abstract  1. Large male seaweed flies (Diptera: Coelopidae) are more likely to mate than smaller males. This is due to sexual conflict over mating, by which females physically resist male attempts to copulate. In some species, large males are simply more efficient at overpowering female resistance.
2. Female reluctance to mate is likely to have evolved due to the costs of mating to females. In many dipterans, males manipulate female behaviour through seminal proteins that have evolved through sperm competition. This behavioural manipulation can be costly to females, for example forcing females to oviposit in sub-optimal conditions and increasing their mortality.
3. Previous work has failed to identify any ubiquitous costs of mating to female coelopids. The work reported here was designed to investigate the effects of exposure to oviposition sites ( Fucus algae) on the reproductive behaviour of four species of coelopid. Algae deposition in nature is stochastic and females mate with multiple males in and around oviposition sites. Spermatogenesis is restricted to the pupal stage and there is last-male sperm precedence. It was predicted that males would avoid wasting sperm and would be more willing to mate, and to remain paired with females for longer, when exposed to oviposition material compared with control males. Females were predicted to incur longevity costs of mating if mating increased their rate of oviposition, especially in the presence of algae.
4. The behaviour of males of all four species concurred with the predictions; however mating did not affect female receptivity, oviposition behaviour, or longevity. Exposure to algae induced oviposition and increased female mortality in all species independently of mating and egg production. The evolutionary ecology of potential costs of mating to female coelopids are discussed in the light of these findings.

The role of diet supplements (honey, water or no supplements) on egg maturation, oviposition strategy and longevity of the parasitic wasp Diaeretiella rapae McIntosh (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) is investigated. Parasitoids feed as larvae on hosts to acquire nutrition for growth and development, and further gain additional resources during their adult stage by feeding on either host or nonhost resources. The additional resources acquired by adults can help them to increase their reproductive activity or life expectancy, or both. Diaeretiella rapae females emerge with some developed eggs and no additional resources are required for egg maturation or successful oviposition. Females are able to oviposit and produce viable offspring immediately after emergence, and the number of eggs left in the ovaries of females decreases with subsequent oviposition, suggesting that ovigeny index of D. rapae is inclined towards pro‐ovigenic status. When unmated males and females are offered honey solution, females are attracted to it, whereas males display courtship and make mating attempts but then feed on honey after mating. The oviposition efficiency of female D. rapae increases by 30% when they feed on honey compared with when starved. Honey‐fed D. rapae adults live significantly longer (almost twice as long) than starved adults. Honey‐fed females deprived of hosts live longer than those offered hosts regularly. The positive effects of honey‐feeding on longevity are greater in females than in males. Taken together, the results of the present study suggest that the provision of additional resources to adult D. rapae parasitoids could enhance their life expectancy and parasitism efficiency in biological control programmes.

Previous studies revealed that males of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, require protein in the adult diet to obtain matings and that ingestion of methyl eugenol, which acts as a pheromone precursor, increases male attractiveness and mating competitiveness. The goal of this study was to investigate the interaction between diet quality and methyl eugenol consumption in affecting the mating frequency of B. dorsalis males. In one set of experiments, mature males were deprived of protein for 1, 3, or 7 days and were either given or denied access to methyl eugenol (ME). These males competed against control males (continuously protein-fed, no feeding on ME) for copulations in field cages. Without ME, males held without protein for 3 or 7 days obtained significantly fewer matings than control males. With ME, however, males held for even 7 days without protein achieved higher mating success than control males. In a second set of experiments, mature males were held without protein for 7 days and then given a protein-rich diet for 1, 3, or 7 days before testing and were either given or denied access to ME. Without ME, males were competitively inferior to control males when tested 1 or 3 days after resumption of protein feeding and equivalent to control males only after 7 days of protein feeding. With ME, however, males obtained significantly more matings than control males when tested 3 or 7 days after resumed protein feeding and had similar mating success as control males after 1 day of access to the protein-rich diet. Results show that mating success in this species is condition-dependent, with both nutritional state and ME consumption influencing male mating success. Under the test conditions, feeding on ME counteracted a low quality diet and enhanced male mating success.

Reproductive biology of the rosylip sculpin, an intertidal spawner
Rosylip sculpin Ascelichthys rhodorus spawned in the intertidal during the winter in the north‐eastern Pacific. Large numbers of males typically congregated at spawning sites, where females deposited clutches. The mating system of this species was external fertilization and group spawning at specific oviposition sites under boulders in the intertidal, and no alternative male mating strategies. Males were abundant at sites while oviposition was occurring, and most abandoned the sites as spawning tapered off seasonally despite the presence of developing clutches. Experimental removal of males from sites suggested that males provided some short‐term benefits to clutches, with catastrophic loss of clutches significantly lower when males were present. The large number of males at an oviposition site and histological evidence indicating high sperm production and storage of sperm prior to release suggest a high level of sperm competition in this species. This spawning pattern appears to differ in substantial ways from any other reported fish mating system.

ABSTRACT. In a laboratory study of adult carrot fly activity, observations were made on caged populations and on individuals isolated in actographs. In cages in LD 12:12, feeding, oviposition, flight and possibly mating were all rhythmic. Peak feeding occurred within 1 h from lights-on and peak oviposition and flight 10–12 h later. Mating frequency increased slightly in the latter half of the light phase. In actographs in LD 12:12, peak activity also occurred 10–12 h after lights-on. Activity increased with age up to at least 5 days old, independently of the effects of starvation, and by day 5 males were approximately 3 times and females 8 times more active than on the day of emergence. Overall, males were approximately 1.4 times more active than females. Females isolated in actographs for 4 days in continuous dim light showed peaks of activity at intervals of approximately 22.5 h, and activity therefore appears to be a true circadian rhythm. In continuous bright light the activity of females became arrhythmic.

Mating and oviposition rhythms and evidence for sex-specific pheromones of the gray-black citrus longicorn beetle Nadezhdiella cantori were investigated. The reproductive and flight activities of this insect mainly occurred between 1700 and 2400 h, and each activity had two peaks with the first one taking place within the 3 h before sunset (2100 h) and the second occurring within the 3 h after sunset. Circadian rhythms of mating and oviposition were significantly correlated but neither mating nor oviposition was significantly correlated with flight. It is suggested that mating and oviposition repeat in turn during pair-bonding and that flight is an indication of termination of reproductive activities in some individuals of a population. Males differentiated between sexes by touching. Mating behavior of males was stimulated by a contact female sex pheromone on the female body surface. Fighting behavior of males was mediated by a chemical on the male body surface. Females left trails of the contact sex pheromone on the trees when walking, which males used to locate them. Implications of these findings are discussed.

The relative force of direct and indirect selection underlying the evolution of polyandry is contentious. When females acquire direct benefits during mating, indirect benefits are often considered negligible. Although direct benefits are likely to play a prominent role in the evolution of polyandry, post‐mating selection for indirect benefits may subsequently evolve. We examined whether polyandrous females acquire indirect benefits and quantified direct and indirect effects of multiple mating on female fitness in a nuptial gift‐giving spider (Pisaura mirabilis). In this system, the food item donated by males during mating predicts direct benefits of polyandry. We compared fecundity, fertility and survival of singly mated females to that of females mated three times with the same (monogamy) or different (polyandry) males in a two‐factorial design where females were kept under high and low feeding conditions. Greater access to nutrients and sperm had surprisingly little positive effect on fitness, apart from shortening the time until oviposition. In contrast, polyandry increased female reproductive success by increasing the probability of oviposition, and egg hatching success indicating that indirect benefits arise from mating with several different mating partners rather than resources transferred by males. The evolution of polyandry in a male‐resource‐based mating system may result from exploitation of the female foraging motivation and that indirect genetic benefits are subsequently derived resulting from co‐evolutionary post‐mating processes to gain a reproductive advantage or to counter costs of mating. Importantly, indirect benefits may represent an additional explanation for the maintenance of polyandry.

1 Laboratory-reared normal, and wild female Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), were assayed in outdoor field cages to assess the impact of a mating-induced behavioural switch on mating and subsequent oviposition activity. 2 Virgin females preferred interactions with males leading to mating over attraction to, and oviposition in, artificial yellow spheres containing guava odour or green apples hung in a guava tree. Laboratory-reared females previously mated with either laboratory-reared normal males or laboratory-reared irradiated (sterile) males showed little interest in remating with males and instead, were much more likely to be found arrested on artificial and real fruit and ovipositing. Oviposition on artificial fruit was five times greater by females that had mated with either normal or irradiated males than by virgin females. Wild females showed similar qualitative changes in the mating-induced behavioural switch; however, oviposition activity was significantly less than for laboratory-reared females. 3 These results confirm that mating has a profound effect on the behaviour of female Mediterranean fruit flies and that irradiated males are functionally equal with normal males (lab-reared or wild) in their ability to alter female behaviour. These results are discussed in the context of the sterile insect technique for control of Mediterranean fruit flies in the field.
