Some studies have implicated the avian digestive cecae as important sites of water and solute reclamation working in concert with the lower intestine and the kidneys as part of an integrated osmoregulatory system. In Gambel's quail (Callipepla gambelii), we studied compensatory adjustments in renal function on days 6–7 and 16–17 following ligation of cecae. Plasma osmolality (Posm) varied significantly between groups with sham-operatd birds (Cs), with an average (Posm) of 348 mOsm/kg H2O and quail with ligated cecae (Cx) having a (Posm) of 355 mOsm/kg H2O. We detected no change in the rate of glomerular filtration (GFR) between experimental and control groups either shortly after cecectomy or after 16–17 d following surgery. Regression analysis of GFR and urine flow rate (V) showed that Cx birds had a significantly lower V at a given GFR than did controls, evidence that Cx quail absorbed more fluid in their renal tubules. Increased fluid reabsorption was apparently driven by an enhanced reabsorption of sodium. Indeed, sodium excretion was lower in Cx quail as compared to sham-operated birds. On days 6–7, Cx quail drank more water than Cs birds, but by days 16–17 drinking rates were similar. At the end of the experiments, Cx quail showed a proliferation of microvilli along the apical membrane of the rectum, an adjustment consistent with the idea that the rectum alters its absorption capacity to adjust for the loss of cecal function.  相似文献

Renal function in red wattlebirds in response to varying fluid intake   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Red wattlebirds (Anthochaera carunculata) are among the more nectarivorous of the Australian honeyeaters (family Meliphagidae). As such, they potentially ingest large and dilute fluid loads as food, and they produce copious dilute urine in the field. We examined in the laboratory the renal mechanisms by which such fluid loads are processed. Wattlebirds received one of three liquid diets [a mix of honey, water, and Complan (Boots) complete dietary supplement] of varying concentration (250, 1000, and 1750 mmol/kg, Na+/K+ concentrations of 4/4, 12/15, and 23/30 mmol/l, respectively). We measured renal function via infusion of a filtration marker (14C-polyethylene glycol) from osmotic minipumps implanted intraperitoneally. Wattlebirds consumed volumes of the three diets sufficient to provide nearly equal caloric intakes (approximately 200 kJ/day), and as a consequence had water turnover rates varying from 30 to 200 ml/day (approximately 50–335% of total body water per day). Renal function in the morning, before feeding, did not differ among diet groups (glomerular filtration rate =18 ml/h, urine flow rate =0.4 ml/h). In the afternoon, after feeding, urine flow did vary, from 3 ml/h in birds on the most concentrated diet to 6 ml/h on the most dilute. This was accomplished by varying the rate of tubular reabsorption of water (from a high of >90% on the most concentrated diet to a low of just over 70% on the most dilute), with little variation in the rate of glomerular filtration (mean ∼23 ml/h). Comparisons between dietary intakes and urinary outputs of water and electrolytes suggest that not all dietary water was absorbed from the gut, but that there was significant post-renal reabsorption of Na+. The reduced fractional water reabsorption on the dilute diet was accompanied by a decrease in the circulating concentration of arginine vasotocin (from >4 pg/ml in birds on the two more concentrated diets to <1 pg/ml on the most dilute diet). In contrast, concentrations of aldosterone (10–20 pg/ml) did not differ among diets. Perhaps in consequence, renal fractional absorption of Na+ also did not differ, and so birds on the dilute diet, with their higher urine flows, had higher rates of Na+ excretion and suffered a decreased concentration of Na+ in the plasma. Previous studies have shown that naloxone causes a decrease in food and water intake; however, the site of this action has not been determined. We investigated this problem by giving bilateral injections of 15 μg/rat of naloxone into the lateral ventricles of cannulated, food and water deprived rats. This treatment caused a significant decrease in food intake when compared to saline injected controls. Water intake in naloxone-treated animals did not differ significantly from that of saline-treated controls during the one hour test period. The total dose of naloxone given centrally, 15 μg, did not produce a change in eating or drinking if given peripherally. The findings imply that naloxone exerts its effect on food intake at a central site. A dose-related and significant suppression of water intake was seen after treatment with nalaxone peripherally (1, 3, and 10 mg/kg, i.p.) in rats with either subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (vag) or a sham vagotomy (sham). Although a significant suppression of food intake was seen in the sham rats, no supression of food intake was seeen in the vag rats at any dose of naloxone tested. In rats pretreated with methyl atropine (5 mg/kg, i.p.), naloxone (3 mg/kg, i.p.) was equivalent to saline in that it did not decrease food intake. However, nalaxone did cause a significant decrease in water intake in methylatropine pre-treated rats. These results suggest that the suppression of food intake by naloxone has a central site of action which is mediated by the vagus, and specifically by vagal efferents, since the effect was blocked by methylatropine. The results also suggest that naloxone's effect on water intake is mediated by a different mechanism than that involved with food intake.  相似文献

Renin activity, angiotensin-converting enzyme activity and aldosterone concentration were measured in the plasma of 8 experimental groups of rats: I--sham operated non-treated rats, II--suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) lesioned non-treated: III--sham operated + furosemide (4 mg/kg i.p.), IV--SCN lesioned + furosemide, V--shams + 24-hour water deprivation: VI--SCN + 24-hour water deprivation, VII--intact rats + saline: and VIII--intact rats + p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA, 300 mg/kg, i.p.). No significant changes in basal levels of the three parameters were found after SCN, lesions in comparison with sham operated controls. Furosemide caused a similar increase in all three parameters of both sham and SCN lesioned rats. Similar changes were observed in SCN rats 24 hours after water deprivation and in intact rats 48 hours after serotonin depletion by pCPA: suppressed renin activity together with increased aldosterone concentration. It is concluded that the central serotonergic system and SCN play a similar role in control of the renin-aldosterone system in rats under conditions of negative water-salt balance.  相似文献

We assessed renal function in least shrews (Cryptotis parva, body mass 4.7 g) within the context of overall water balance. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of shrews with unlimited food and water was 2.4 ml/h, about 60% of the rate predicted from body mass. Of this, about 3% (0.075 ml/h) was excreted as urine with an osmolality of 1944 mmol/kg, 5.5 times plasma osmolality. Shrews had a total water turnover (5 ml/day) two to three times higher than expected from allometry for a small mammal of this size. Water influx was partitioned among preformed water from food (65%), drinking (16%), and metabolic water (20%). Water efflux was divided among urine flow (35%), fecal water loss (estimated as 23%), and evaporation (by difference, 42%). Least shrews had a high water turnover rate and relatively high urine flow rate (UFR); this likely reflects a combination of factors, including high metabolism, active lifestyle, and wet diet.  相似文献

本工作观察了肝部分切除(68%)后96h 大鼠再生肝的抗 CCl_4损伤作用,并用氧电极法测定了再生肝线粒体的呼吸活性。结果如下: (1)CCl_4(50%,10ml/kg)引起的动物死亡率,肝切除组大鼠较假手术组明显降低;(2)CCl_4(50%,5 ml/kg)损伤后,肝切除组大鼠血清胆红素、血清谷丙转氨酶(sGPT)均明显低于假手术组,组织学检查损伤程度也明显减轻;(3)无论是否伴有 CCI_1损伤,肝切除组大鼠肝线粒体的呼吸活性均强于假手术组,且肝线粒体呼吸活性的变化与血清胆红素、sGPT 及肝组织损伤程度的改善是一致的。上述结果提示:再生肝线粒体呼吸活性增高,同时不易受 CCl_4损伤,可能在再生肝抗 CCl_4损伤机制中起一定作用。  相似文献

The effect of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) on serum progesterone and the possible role of adrenal progesterone in mediating stimulation by 5-HTP of phasic release of luteinizing. hormone (LH) were investigated in estradiol benzoate (EB)-treated ovariectomized rats. LH surges were induced in long-term (at least two weeks) ovariectomized rats by two injections of EB (20 micrograms/rat, s.c.) with an interval of 72 hrs. Administration of 5-HTP (50 mg/kg, i.p.) at 1000 hr in EB-treated ovariectomized rats resulted in a four-fold increase in serum progesterone within 30 mins, and significantly stimulated the LH surge at 1600 hr. This facilitative effect of 5-HTP on serum LH, but not progesterone, was further potentiated in rats pretreated with P-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) 72 hrs earlier. Adrenalectomy shortly before 5-HTP administration attenuated the LH surge in saline treated controls, and completely blocked the facilitative effect of 5-HTP on the afternoon surge of LH in rats pretreated with PCPA 72 hrs earlier. On the other hand, chronic adrenalectomy (for 6 days) followed by hydrocortisone (0.2 mg/rat/day) replacement not only had no effect on the LH surge in saline treated controls, but also failed to prevent 5-HTP from facilitating the LH surge in PCPA pretreated rats. On the first day of bleeding, the basal LH value at 1000 hr in sham operated controls was significantly suppressed by PCPA pretreatment 48 hrs earlier. Bendectin, composed of doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine HCl (1:1), is an antinauseant previously prescribed for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. The present study examined the maternal and developmental effects of Bendectin (0, 200, 500, or 800 mg/kg/day, po) administered to timed-pregnant CD rats (36-41/group) during organogenesis (gestational days [gd] 6-15). At death (gd 20), all live fetuses were examined for external, visceral, and skeletal abnormalities. At 500 and 800 mg/kg/day, maternal toxicity included reduced food consumption during treatment and for the gestation period, increased water consumption in the posttreatment period, reduced weight gain during treatment, and sedation; water consumption was reduced during treatment and for the gestation period, and maternal mortality (17.1%) was observed only at the high dose. Developmental toxicity included reduced prenatal viability (800 mg/kg/day) and reduced fetal body weight/litter (500 and 800 mg/kg/day). In addition, reduced ossification of metacarpals (800 mg/kg/day), phalanges of the forelimbs (500 and 800 mg/kg/day), and of caudal vertebral centra (all doses) was observed. No increase in percent malformed live fetuses/litter was observed. The proportion of litters with one or more malformed fetuses was higher than vehicle controls only at 800 mg/kg/day, with short 13th rib (to which the test species is predisposed) as the predominant observation. By contrast, a positive control agent (nitrofen, 50 mg/kg/day, po, 14 dams) produced 85% malformed fetuses/litter with the predominant malformation being diaphragmatic hernia. In conclusion, the incidence of litters with one or more malformed fetuses was increased only at a dose of Bendectin which produced maternal mortality (17.1%) and other indices of maternal and developmental toxicity (see Discussion).  相似文献

A direct effect of prolactin (Prl) on gonadotropin secretion has been suggested but not convincingly demonstrated. The secretion of LH in response to photostimulation (phs) and ovariectomy (ovx) was evaluated in adult female turkeys that had received injections of ovine Prl (124 IU/bird/day for 14 days). In experiment 1, oPrl administration initiated on the day of ovx and phs in reproductively quiescent birds suppressed (p less than 0.05) the elevated LH from a peak level of 11.7 +/- 3.5 ng/ml to 5.1 +/- 0.8 ng/ml in ovx hens. The photo-induced LH increase was unaffected by the oPrl treatment in intact birds. In experiment 2, the oPrl treatment was initiated 7 days before ovx and/or phs. This treatment blunted the peak increase in LH level that follows phs in intact (p less than 0.05) and in ovx (p less than 0.05) hens. In both experiments, onset of lay following phs was delayed (p less than 0.05) in the oPrl-treated groups (29.4 +/- 0.9 days vs. 22.3 +/- 0.9 days; 34.8 +/- 0.5 days vs. 25.0 +/- 0.9 days). In experiment 3, administration of oPrl after ovx of laying hens suppressed the LH rise at essentially all sampling times tested. At the end of the experimental period, 6 of the 7 sham-operated, oPrl-treated laying hens, but none of the sham controls, displayed incubation behavior and had Prl levels of 1020 +/- 370 ng/ml compared to 34 +/- 7 ng/ml in vehicle-treated controls. The results suggest a role for Prl in incubation behavior and LH secretion in the turkey.  相似文献

Ethanol was administered to female and male Wistar rats by mixing it with their drinking water. Ethanol concentrations were gradually increased up to either 8% or 15%. Female rats receiving 8% ethanol in their drinking water consumed 5-13 g, males 4-10 g daily. The ethanol/total food caloric intake percentages were 13 to 20% and 9 to 15% for female and male rats, respectively. There was no difference in body weight and relative liver weight between treated rats and their controls. Female and male rats receiving 15% of ethanol in their drinking water consumed 8-14 g ethanol per kg body weight per day. The percentages of ethanol/total food caloric intake were stabilized at about 25% for both sexes. Growth of the rats differed only slightly from controls; a tendency for a higher increase of body weight of the control rats was found. No difference in relative liver weight between ethanol-treated and control rats was observed. Microscopic examinations revealed that the ethanol treatment resulted in fat accumulation in the liver cells. A proliferation of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) was more marked in the 15% dosed rats than in the 8% dosed rats and more distinct in female rats than in male rats in both dosage groups.  相似文献

Summary The early spring distribution of seabirds, pinnipeds and cetaceans was quantitatively determined in the northern Weddell Sea during the EPOS 1 cruise of the icebreaking RV Polarstern. Two hundred and ninety-one half hour counts were made in the Antarctic region between October 18 and November 16, 1988 (+94 counts in sub-antarctic and sub-tropical water). The bird populations were dominated by the Adélie Penguin Pygoscelis adeliae, which represented 90% of the birds counted in the closed pack ice (CPI), with a mean density of 31 penguins per km2. Crabeater seal Lobodon carcinophagus, the most common pinniped, had a mean density of 1.2/km2 in the CPI with local concentrations reaching 14/km2. Expressed as biomass, mean values of about 90 kg/km2 were found in the whole Antarctic zone for seabirds, 50 for seals, and 35 for baleen cetaceans. Densities were higher in the CPI: 140, 180 and 115 kg/km2 respectively, were found for birds, pinnipeds and baleen whales, and lowest in open water (8 kg/km2 for the birds, 0.2 for the pinnipeds and no whales). A minimum value of food intake by seabirds and marine mammals was estimated to be 2.7 mg C/m2/day for the Antarctic zone (4.1 in the CPI). Taking into account that pinnipeds density and cetacean food uptake are underestimated, and that Antarctic seabirds consume much more fish than generally suspected, a minimum krill production of 16 mg C/m2/day is proposed for the Antarctic zone: 22.5 in the CPI, 3 in open water, and intermediate values in the marginal ice zones.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

The effects of juice from Morinda citrifolia (noni) on gastric emptying, gastrointestinal transit, and plasma level of cholecystokinin (CCK) in rats were studied. Male rats were given noni by gavage at levels of 0.25, 1, or 4 ml/kg once per day for one or 7 days. The rats in the control group were given water, while the rats in the experimental group were fasted overnight before measurement of gastrointestinal motility. Gastrointestinal motility was assessed in rats 15 min after intragastric instillation of a test meal containing charcoal (10%) and Na251CrO4 (0.5 microCi/ml). Gastric emptying was determined by measuring the amount of radiolabeled chromium contained in the small intestine as a percentage of the initial amount received. Then, gastrointestinal transit was evaluated by calculating the geometric center of distribution of the radiolabeled marker. Finally, blood samples were collected for measurement of CCK by radioimmunoassay. The administration of noni at 0.25 ml/kg, but not at 1 ml/kg and 4 ml/kg, for 1 day significantly inhibited gastric emptying. In contrast, gastric emptying was significantly inhibited by oral noni (0.25, 1, or 4 ml/kg) for 7 days. Intraperitoneal injection of lorglumide (5 or 10 mg/kg), a selective CCK1 receptor antagonist, effectively attenuated the noni-induced inhibition of gastric emptying. The intestinal transit and body weight, food intake, water intake, urine volume as well as feces weight were not altered by the administration of noni either acutely or chronically, but the administration of oral noni (1 ml/kg) for 7 days increased the level of plasma CCK in male rats. These results suggest that oral noni inhibits gastric emptying in male rats via a mechanism involving stimulation of CCK secretion and CCK1 receptor activation.  相似文献

Energetic cost of tail streamers in the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica)   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Different hypotheses stress the importance of natural or sexual selection to explain the evolution and maintenance of long outermost tail feathers in the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). Since energy costs are predicted to arise from tail length manipulation, we measured the daily energy expenditure in three experimental groups (tail-shortened, tail-elongated, and control birds) with the doubly labelled water technique. Though we did not directly measure flight cost, we assumed this to be positively related to daily energy expenditure. Mass independent daily energy expenditure (kJ/mass0.67 day) average daily metabolic rate (ml CO2/g h), and water flux (ml H2O/g day) did not show any significant difference among treatments in either sex. Males had higher values than females for the three parameters. Males with short original tail length experienced a higher water flux than originally long-tailed males. Females that laid more eggs during the breeding season or had heavier broods also showed higher levels of water flux which could imply a higher food intake. Our expectation of finding energetic costs of manipulated tail length in barn swallows with an integrated measure of metabolism was not fulfilled, and we did not find evidence for behavioural changes in the birds involved in the experiment.  相似文献

Nest deprivation of incubating turkeys caused a decrease in serum prolactin (Prl) levels from 1184.5 +/- 116.4 ng/ml to 896.8 +/- 83.0 ng/ml 1 day after initiation of deprivation, with a further decline to 156.5 +/- 111.7 ng/ml at the end of the 22-day experimental period. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone and estradiol levels following nest deprivation were similar to those in birds allowed to incubate (controls). Oral administration of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA, 50 mg/kg) to incubating turkeys for 3 consecutive days reduced nesting frequency (P less than 0.05) on the 4th day after initiation of treatment and the nesting virtually ceased by the 9th day. Pretreatment Prl was 1655 +/- 210 ng/ml and declined (P less than 0.05) after PCPA administration to a low of 28.6 +/- 2.8 ng/ml. In addition, PCPA caused a sustained rise in serum LH peaking (5.59 +/- 1.09 ng/ml) 3 days after treatment initiation. Contrary to nest deprivation, serum levels of progesterone and estradiol increased (P less than 0.05) as a consequence of PCPA treatment. Seven of 8 PCPA-treated birds later came into lay when their Prl levels and nesting frequency increased again. The results suggest a role for serotonin (5-HT) in incubation behavior, and Prl and LH secretion in turkeys.  相似文献

We compared food intake, body mass and body composition of male and female black ducks (Anas rubripes) during winter (January-March). Birds were fed the same complete diet ad libitum on consecutive days each week without fasting (control; nine male; nine female) or with either short fasts (2 day x week(-1); nine male; nine female), or long fasts (4 day x week(-1); eleven male; twelve female). We continued treatments through spring (March-May) to measure the effect of intermittent fasts on body mass and egg production. Daily food intake of fasted birds was up to four times that of unfasted birds. Weekly food intake of males was similar among treatments (364 g x kg(-1) x week(-1)) but fasted females consumed more than unfasted females in January (363 g x kg(-1) x week(-1) vs. 225 g x kg(-1) x week(-1)). Although both sexes lost 10-14% body mass, fasted females lost less mass and lipid than unfasted females during winter. Total body nitrogen was conserved over winter in both sexes even though the heart and spleen lost mass while the reproductive tract and liver gained mass. Intermittent fasting increased liver, intestinal tissue and digesta mass of females but not of males. Fasting delayed egg production in spring but did not affect size, fertility or hatching of the clutch. Females on long fasts were still heavier than controls after laying eggs. Thus black ducks combine flexibility of food intake with plasticity of digestive tract, liver and adipose tissue when food supply is interrupted during winter. Females modulate body mass for survival and defer reproduction when food supply is interrupted in spring.  相似文献

Wild mosquitoes were allowed to feed, during two nights, on a heartworm-infected dog with a very high microfilaraemia (72,000 and 78,000 microfilariae/ml just prior to be allocated in the live trap). A heartworm-free dog was used as control bait in the second night. Engorged mosquitoes (Aedes caspius, Anopheles maculipennis s.l., Culex modestus, and Cx pipiens) were kept under laboratory conditions, artificially fed until day 10 post-infection (PI) and then dissected for the presence of Dirofilaria immitis larvae. Mortality of Ae. caspius and Cx modestus was significantly higher than controls on day 3 PI (89.4 and 80.3%, respectively), but survival rates were similar in the following period. Third-stage larvae were observed from day 12 to 17 PI in the four mosquito species studied. However, vector efficiency was significantly higher in Ae. caspius which produced 102 (73.9%) of the 138 infective larvae found. Although less efficient vectors, the other 3 species may contribute to D. immitis transmission in the study area due to their abundance (Cx modestus) or higher resistance to the negative effects of infection (An. maculipennis s.l., Cx pipiens). As far as Cx pipiens is concerned, this mosquito, which luckily fed the least frequently on the dog, confirmed to act as powerful vector in iperendemic areas. The risks for veterinary and medical health, related to the zoo-antropophylic host-feeding pattern of the studied species, are discussed.  相似文献

Glucagon is a highly potent lipolytic agent in birds and a candidate for regulating premigratory and winter fattening. The seasonal role of glucagon in fat metabolism was determined by monitoring plasma glucagon, fatty acids and glucose in two groups of red-winged blackbirds; one group exposed to outside environmental conditions (September to May) and a second group maintained at summer conditions with respect to day length and temperature. The results of this investigation demonstrate significantly lower plasma glucagon (480.1 pg/ml) in birds exposed to outdoor conditions than in birds maintained at summer conditions (734.6 pg/ml) during September/October. The data are consistent with the view that low plasma glucagon in outdoor birds ensures the preservation of fat stores for autumn migration. Lower plasma free fatty acid (FFA) levels (0.35 mEq/l) in outdoor birds (vs. 0.54 mEq/l in indoor birds) in autumn may reflect the rapid transport of FFA to adipose tissue for lipogenesis resulting in a steady increase in body weight from September to January. The sharp decline in plasma FFA in indoor birds from 0.54 mEq/l in September/October to 0.28 mEq/l in January/February may be attributed to a marked decrease in food consumption, rather than a dramatic change in the rate of lipid transport from blood to muscle or adipose tissue. Glucagon injections caused a 600% increase in plasma FFA and a more modest (50%) increase in plasma glucose. This confirms the major role of glucagon in fat mobilization. Its lipolytic effects, however, can vary seasonally by way of down regulation of glucagon receptors. Down regulation of glucagon receptors in adipose tissue and the associated reduced sensitivity of adipocytes to the lipolytic action of glucagon would account for the progressive increase in weight of the birds throughout November/December when plasma glucagon levels were significantly higher (578.9 pg/ml) in outdoor birds as compared to indoor birds (436.9 pg/ml). Lower plasma glucagon levels (405.5 pg/ml) in outdoor birds in January/February (vs. 638.6 pg/ml in indoor birds) may reflect the same physiological conditions prevailing in September/October favoring the preservation of fat stores.  相似文献

Summary The contributions of the kidneys, the small intestine and the lower intestine (rectum plus cloaca) to water conservation during dehydration in unanaesthetized, unrestrained house sparrows (Passer domesticus) were assessed. Thirty hours of acute dehydration resulted in a 12% loss in body mass and a significant increase in plasma osmolality. Glomerular filtration rate declined by 55%, from 7.7 to 3.5 ml/h, and urine flow rate delined by more than 80%, from 0.2 to 0.03 ml/h. These changes are likely attributable to a large increase in plasma levels of arginine vasotocin during dehydration, from <26 pg/ml in hydrated birds to greater than 200 pg/ml after 30 h dehydration. Flow of water from the ileum to the lower intestine was reduced during dehydration, primarily because of a reduced flow of dry matter (with no significant reduction in water content). The rate of water loss in the excreta declined from 0.2 ml/h in hydrated birds to 0.04 ml/h in dehydrated birds. The rate of water reabsorption in the lower intestine (equal to the rate of water loss in the excreta minus the combined rates of inflow into the lower intestine from the urine and the ileal contents) slightly exceeded the rate of water flow from the ileum in both hydrated and dehydrated birds. We suggest that much of the water reabsorbed in the lower intestine of hydrated birds derives from the urine, but that primarily water from ileal contents is reabsorbed in dehydrated birds. That is, urine undergoes significant post-renal modification in hydrated but not dehydrated house sparrows.  相似文献

Migrating blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) were used to test the predictions that (1) the rebuilding of the digestive tract, as reflected by mass-specific consumption of food on the first 2-3 days of a stopover, is faster in birds with access to drinking water than in birds without, and (2) that adipose tissue and pectoral muscles grow faster and to a greater extent in birds with unlimited access to water. We simulated migratory stopover in two experiments. In Experiment I, each of 31 birds was randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups for 6 days. Along with mealworms (~64% water) ad libitum, Group 1 received drinking water ad libitum; Group 2 had 0.5 h/day access to water; and Group 3 had no access to water. In Experiment II, 30 birds were offered a mixed diet for insectivorous birds (~33% water) ad libitum for 6 days, while randomly assigned to two groups: (1) Water ad libitum-control; and (2) 30 min access to water twice a day. We measured lean mass and fat mass using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, as well as body mass (m(b)), pectoral muscle index (PMI), and daily intake of food and water. Mean daily water intake was significantly different among the groups in both experiments. However, the availability of drinking water positively affected the rates of gain of lean and fat mass only in birds fed with the mixed, relatively dry diet. Furthermore, mass-specific daily food intake was affected by the availability of drinking water only in the mixed diet experiment, in which birds with unlimited access to drinking water reached an asymptote, 1 day earlier than birds in the water-restricted group. We suggest that in birds consuming diets with low water content, the lack of sufficient drinking water may result in slower rebuilding of the digestive tract, or may influence biochemical processes in the gut that result in slower growth of tissue. Although blackcaps obtained sufficient water from preformed and metabolic water to renew lost tissues when eating mealworms, given access to water, the birds drank prodigiously. Our results also suggest that if drinking water is unavailable to migrating blackcaps, their choices are restricted to water-rich foods, which may constrain their rate of feeding and thus the rate at which they deposit fat. Consequently, drinking water may have an important influence on birds' migratory strategies with respect to habitat selection, use of energy, and the saving of time.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic alterations of cardiac connexin 43 (Cx43), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) in the setting of different ventricular fibrillation (VF) duration. In this study, thirty-two dogs were randomly divided into sham control group, 8-min VF group, 12-min VF group, and 30-min VF group. Cx43 and phosphorylated Cx43 (p-Cx43) in tissues were detected by western blot and immunofluorescence analysis. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were detected by western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis. The results showed that Cx43 levels in three VF groups were significantly decreased compared with sham control group. p-Cx43 levels in 12-min and 30-min VF groups were significantly reduced compared with sham control group. The ratio of p-Cx43/Cx43 was also decreased in VF groups. Compared with sham controls, no significant difference was observed between the sham control group and 8-min VF group in MMP-2 level, but MMP-2 level increased in 12-min and 30-min VF groups. The ratios of MMP-2/TIMP-2 were higher in VF groups, and were correlated with the duration of VF. A remarkable correlation was observed between the ratio of p-Cx43/Cx43 and MMP-2/TIMP-2 (r = ?0.93, P < 0.01). In conclusion, the alteration of Cx43 and/or p-Cx43 levels and the imbalance of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 may contribute to the initiation and/or persistence of VF. Maneuvers managed to modulate Cx43 level or normalize the balance of MMP-2/TIMP-2 are promising to ameliorate prognosis of VF.  相似文献
