The effects of high salinity (up to 400 m M NaCl) on photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle were investigated in the halophyte Artimisia anethifolia grown under outdoor conditions. In order to examine the changes in PSII photochemistry, photoinhibition, thermal dissipation associated with the xanthophyll cycle in salt-acclimated plants, the experiments were conducted at midday on a clear day (maximal irradiance 1500 μmol m−1 s−1) and on a cloudy day (maximal irradiance 700 μmol m−1 s−1), respectively. With increasing salt concentration, the accumulation of sodium and chloride in leaves increased considerably while the relative growth rate and CO2 assimilation rate decreased significantly. Salinity induced no effects on PSII photochemistry, thermal energy dissipation, and the contents of the xanthophyll cycle pigments either on a clear day or on a cloudy day. However, when compared with those on a cloudy day, PSII photochemistry decreased and thermal energy dissipation increased significantly in both control and salt-acclimated plants on a clear day. The levels of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin at the expense of violaxanthin were higher on a clear day than on a cloudy day. The results suggest that photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle were not induced by high salinity but by high light only in A. anethifolia plants. The results also suggest that A. anethifolia showed high resistance not only to high salinity, but also to photoinhibition even when it was treated with high salinity and exposed to full sunlight.  相似文献

Photosynthetic pigment composition and photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry were characterized during the flag leaf senescence of wheat plants grown in the field. During leaf senescence, neoxanthin and beta-carotene decreased concomitantly with chlorophyll, whereas lutein and xanthophyll cycle pigments were less affected, leading to increases in lutein/chlorophyll and xanthophyll cycle pigments/chlorophyll ratios. The chlorophyll a/b ratio also increased. With the progression of senescence, the maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry decreased only slightly in the early morning (low light conditions), but substantially at midday (high light conditions). Actual PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centres decreased significantly both early in the morning and at midday and such decreases were much greater at midday than in the early morning. At the same time, non-photochemical quenching, zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin contents at the expense of violaxanthin increased both early in the morning and at midday, with a greater increase at midday. The results in the present study suggest that a down-regulation of PSII occurred in senescent leaves and that the xanthophyll cycle plays a role in the protection of PSII from photoinhibitory damage in senescent leaves by dissipating excess excitation energy, particularly when exposed to high light.  相似文献

The response of Norway spruce saplings (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) was monitored continuously during short-term exposure (10 days) to high irradiance (HI; 1000mumolm(-2)s(-1)). Compared with plants acclimated to low irradiance (100mumolm(-2)s(-1)), plants after HI exposure were characterized by a significantly reduced CO(2) assimilation rate throughout the light response curve. Pigment contents varied only slightly during HI exposure, but a rapid and strong response was observed in xanthophyll cycle activity, particularly within the first 3 days of the HI treatment. Both violaxanthin convertibility under HI and the amount of zeaxanthin pool sustained in darkness increased markedly under HI conditions. These changes were accompanied by an enhanced non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy (NRD) and the acceleration of induction of both NRD and de-epoxidation of the xanthophyll cycle pigments. We found a strong negative linear correlation between the amount of sustained de-epoxidized xanthophylls and the photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency (F(V)/F(M)), indicating photoprotective down-regulation of the PSII function. Recovery of F(V)/F(M) at the end of the HI treatment revealed that Norway spruce was able to cope with a 10-fold elevated irradiance due particularly to an efficient NRD within the PSII antenna that was associated with enhanced violaxanthin convertibility and a light-induced accumulation of zeaxanthin that persisted in darkness.  相似文献

Short-term photosensitivity and oxidative stress responses were compared for three groups of marine microalgae: Antarctic microalgae, temperate diatoms and temperate flagellates. In total, 15 low-light-acclimated species were exposed to simulated surface irradiance including ultraviolet radiation (SSI). Photosensitivity was assessed as the rate of recovery of Fv/Fm in the hours following SSI treatment. Before, during and after the SSI treatment, oxidative stress responses were assessed by following xanthophyll content and cycling, and activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase, and glutathione redox status. When acclimated to low irradiance, antioxidant levels were not group specific. Superoxide dismutase activity was positively correlated with cell size, whereas in general, ascorbate peroxidase activity appeared to be lower and glutathione redox status appeared to be higher in the Antarctic than in the temperate species. After SSI exposure, the strong inhibition of PSII was followed by variable rates of recovery, although four species remained photosynthetically inactive. SSI tolerance appeared unrelated to geographic or taxonomic background, or to cell size. PSII recovery was enhanced in species with decreasing superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione redox status and increased xanthophyll cycle activity. We conclude that antioxidant responses are highly species specific and not related to the geographic or taxonomic background. Furthermore, xanthophyll cycling seems more important than antioxidants. Finally, it can be hypothesized that glutathione could function as a stress sensor and response regulator.  相似文献

The effects of high PAR (400–700 nm), UVA (315–400 nm), and UVB (280–315 nm) radiation on viability and photosynthesis were investigated for Chaetoceros brevis Schütt. This Antarctic marine diatom was cultivated under low, medium, and high irradiance and nitrate, phosphate, silicate, and iron limitation before exposure to a simulated surface irradiance (SSI) treatment, with and without UVB radiation. Light‐harvesting and protective pigment composition and PSII parameters were determined before SSI exposure, whereas viability was measured by flow cytometry in combination with a viability stain after the treatment. Recovery of PSII efficiency was measured after 20 h in dim light in a separate experiment. In addition, low and high irradiance acclimated cells were exposed outdoors for 4 h to assess the effects of natural PAR, UVA, and UVB on viability. Low irradiance acclimated cells were particularly sensitive to photo induced viability loss, whereas no viability loss was found after acclimation to high irradiance. Furthermore, nutrient limitation reduced sensitivity to photo induced viability loss, relative to nutrient replete conditions. No additional viability loss was found after UVB exposure. Sunlight exposed cells showed no additional UVB effect on viability, whereas UVA and PAR significantly reduced the viability of low irradiance acclimated cells. Recovery of PSII function was nearly complete in cultures that survived the light treatments. Increased resistance to high irradiance coincided with an increased ratio between protective‐ and light‐harvesting pigments before the SSI treatment, demonstrating the importance of nonphotochemical quenching by diatoxanthin for survival of near‐surface irradiance. We conclude that a sudden transfer to high irradiance can be fatal for low irradiance acclimated C. brevis.  相似文献

Laminaria saccharina (Lamouroux) form the largest, most abundant and conspicuous seaweed populations along the French coast of the eastern English Channel. As they are located in the intertidal zone, they are exposed to considerable irradiance variations, mainly related to tidal cycles. The response of these macro‐algae to light variations over a simulated daily tidal cycle was investigated in the laboratory during spring, autumn and winter using chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment analysis. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and the operating PSII efficiency (ΦPSII) showed clear daily cycles according to the irradiance variation throughout the 12 h simulated tidal cycle, whereas the pattern of the relative photosynthetic electron transport rate (rETR) was not so obvious. The algae reacted to the light increase by developing photoprotective mechanisms able to dissipate the excess energy reaching PSII by the de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin into zeaxanthin. Because of their better acclimation to strong irradiance, spring populations were less affected by this light treatment than were winter populations. In particular, L. saccharina showed more pigments of the xanthophyll cycle in spring to cope with strong irradiance exposure. Alternatively, they developed their antenna complexes in winter to harvest a maximum of light.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle in the senescent flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants grown in the field were investigated. Compared to the non-senescent leaves, photosynthetic capacity was significantly reduced in senescent flag leaves. The light intensity at which photosynthesis was saturated also declined significantly. The light response curves of PSII photochemistry indicate that a down-regulation of PSII photochemistry occurred in senescent leaves in particular at high light. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in senescent flag leaves decreased slightly when measured at predawn but substantially at midday, suggesting that PSII function was largely maintained and photoinhibition occurred in senescent leaves when exposed to high light. At midday, PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably, while non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. Moreover, compared with the values at early morning, a greater decrease in CO2 assimilation rate was observed at midday in senescent leaves than in control leaves. The levels of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin via the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin increased in senescent flag leaves from predawn to midday. An increase in the xanthophyll cycle pigments relative to chlorophyll was observed in senescent flag leaves. The results suggest that the xanthophyll cycle was activated in senescent leaves due to the decrease in CO2 assimilation capacity and the light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis and that the enhanced formation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin at high light may play an important role in the dissipation of excess light energy and help to protect photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage. Our results suggest that the well-known function of the xanthophyll cycle to safely dissipate excess excitation energy is also important for maintaining photosynthetic function during leaf senescence.  相似文献

Higher plants must dissipate absorbed light energy that exceeds the photosynthetic capacity to avoid molecular damage to the pigments and proteins that comprise the photosynthetic apparatus. Described in this minireview is a current view of the biochemical, biophysical and bioenergetic aspects of the primary photoprotective mechanism responsible for dissipating excess excitation energy as heat from photosystem II (PSII). The photoprotective heat dissipation is measured as nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) of the PSII chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence. The NPQ mechanism is controlled by the trans-thylakoid membrane pH gradient (ΔpH) and the special xanthophyll cycle pigments. In the NPQ mechanism, the de-epoxidized endgroup moieties and the trans-thylakoid membrane orientations of antheraxanthin (A) and zeaxanthin (Z) strongly affect their interactions with protonated chlorophyll binding proteins (CPs) of the PSII inner antenna. The CP protonation sites and steps are influenced by proton domains sequestered within the proteo-lipid core of the thylakoid membrane. Xanthophyll cycle enrichment around the CPs may explain why changes in the peripheral PSII antenna size do not necessarily affect either the concentration of the xanthophyll cycle pigments on a per PSII unit basis or the NPQ mechanism. Recent time-resolved PSII Chi a fluorescence studies suggest the NPQ mechanism switches PSII units to an increased rate constant of heat dissipation in a series of steps that include xanthophyll de-epoxidation, CP-protonation and binding of the xanthophylls to the protonated CPs; the concerted process can be described with a simple two-step, pH-activation model. The xanthophyll cycle-dependent NPQ mechanism is profoundly influenced by temperatures suboptimal for photosynthesis via their effects on the trans-thylakoid membrane energy coupling system. Further, low temperature effects can be grouped into either short term (minutes to hours) or long term (days to seasonal) series of changes in the content and composition of the PSII pigment-proteins. This minireview concludes by briefly highlighting primary areas of future research interest regarding the NPQ mechanism.  相似文献

The characteristics of photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and xanthophyll cycle pigments during flag leaf senescence of field-grown wheat plants were investigated. With senescence progressing, the light-saturated net CO2 assimilation rate expressed either on a basis of leaf area or chlorophyll decreased significantly. The apparent quantum yield of net photosynthesis decreased when expressed on a leaf area basis but increased when expressed on a chlorophyll basis. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry decreased very little while actual PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching, and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably. At the same time, non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. A substantial decrease in the contents of violaxanthin and zeaxanthin, but a slight decrease in the content of antheraxanthin were observed. However, the de-epoxidation status of the xanthophyll cycle was positively correlated with progressive senescence. This increase was due mainly to a smaller decrease in zeaxanthin than in violaxanthin. Our results suggest that PSII apparatus remained functional, but a down-regulation of PSII occurred under the steady state of photosynthesis in senescent flag leaves. Such a down-regulation was associated with the closure of PSII centers and an enhanced xanthophyll cycle-related thermal dissipation in the PSII antennae.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify the effects of exogenous putrescine on photosynthetic performance and heat dissipation capacity in cucumber seedlings under salt stress. The stress of 75 mM NaCl for 7 days caused a significant decrease in net photosynthetic rate (P N ). The experiment employed a chlorophyll fluorescence imaging technique and demonstrated that the maximal quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and the actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (ΦPSII) were reduced by salt stress. Moreover, salt stress markedly reduced the photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) and non-photochemical quenching coefficient (qN), and significantly increased non-regulated heat dissipation (ΦNO). However, stressed plants supplied with exogenous putrescine exhibited higher P N and ΦPSII, which indicated that putrescine can alleviate the detrimental effects on photosynthesis induced by salt stress. Putrescine sprayed on stressed plants significantly enhanced the regulated energy dissipation (ΦNPQ) and decreased ΦNO. Application of exogenous putrescine also changed the levels of xanthophyll cycle components and further enhanced the de-epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle pigments under salt stress. Under control conditions, putrescine exerted little influence on the photosynthetic parameters in cucumber leaves. In conclusion, the application of exogenous putrescine may improve the heat dissipation capacity by promoting the xanthophyll cycle to reduce the damage caused by excess excitation energy, thus enhancing the salt tolerance of cucumber seedlings.  相似文献

Changes in the activities of enzymes involved in scavenging active oxygen species were followed after exposing bean seedling leaves (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to various cross stresses of irradiance and temperature. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) and ascorbate peroxidase (AsAPOD, EC 1.11.1.11) increased to different extent with prolonged irradiation of the leaves, and were stimulated by high temperature (HT). The activity of catalase (CAT, 1.11.1.6) decreased when exposed to strong irradiance (HI), and the decrease was further exacerbated when HI was combined with HT. CAT activity was more sensitive to HT than to HI. Ascorbate (AsA) content slightly decreased and then increased during the treatment of HI, but decreased under the cross stress of HI and HT. On the contrary, glutathione (GSH) content increased all the time during various treatments of irradiance and temperature. The increase in the combined stress was even more pronounced. Irradiance is the major reason in triggering the operation of xanthophyll cycle, which was difficult to be started by HT. The antioxidant systems tended to be inactivated with prolonged exposure to the cross stress of HI and HT. The de-expoxidated state of xanthophyll cycle, however, was increasing all the time, which indicated that the zeaxanthin-dependent thermal dissipation was one major energy dissipation pathway during the cross stress of HI and HT.

Abstract: Excitation energy dissipation, including the xanthophyll cycle, during senescence in wheat flag leaves grown in the field was investigated at midday and in the morning. With progress of senescence, photosynthesis (Pn) and actual PSII photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII) decreased markedly at midday. The decrease in extent of Pn was greater than that of ΦPSII. However, there was no significant decline in Pn and ΦPSII observed in the morning, except in leaves 60 days after anthesis. The kinetics of xanthophyll cycle activity, thermal dissipation (NPQ), and qf observed at midday during senescence exhibited two distinct phases. The first phase was characterized by an increase of xanthophyll cycle activity, NPQ, and qf during the first 45 days after anthesis. The second phase took place 45 days after anthesis, characterized by a dramatic decline in the above parameters. However, the qI, observed both at midday and in the morning, always increased along with senescence. A larger proportion of NPQ insensitive to DTT (an inhibitor of the de-epoxidation of V to Z) was also observed in severely senescent leaves. In the morning, only severely senescent leaves showed higher xanthophyll cycle activity, NPQ, qf, and qI. It was demonstrated that, at the beginning of senescence or under low light, wheat leaves were able to dissipate excess light energy via NPQ, depending on the xanthophyll cycle. However, the xanthophyll cycle was insufficient to protect leaves against photodamage under high light, when leaves became severely senescent. The ratio of (Fj - Fo)/(Fp - Fo) increased gradually during the first 45 days after anthesis, but dramatically increased 45 days after anthesis. We propose that another photoprotection mechanism might exist around reaction centres, activated in severely senescent leaves to protect leaves from photodamage.  相似文献

The protective role of leaf antioxidant systems in the mechanism of plant acclimation to growth irradiance was studied in Vinca major, Schefflera arboricola, and Mahonia repens, which were grown for several months at 20, 100, and 1200 [mu]mol photons m-2 s-1. As growth irradiance increased, several constituents of the "Mehler-peroxidase" pathway also increased: superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, ascorbate, and glutathione. This occurred concomitantly with increases in the xanthophyll cycle pool size and in the rate of nonphotochemical energy dissipation under steady-state conditions. There was no evidence for photosystem II overreduction in plants grown at high irradiance, although the reduction state of the stromal NADP pool, estimated from measurements of NADP-malate dehydrogenase activity, was greater than 60% in V. major and S. arboricola. Ascorbate, which removes reactive O2 species generated by O2 photoreduction in the chloroplast and serves as a reductant for the conversion of the xanthophyll cycle pigments to the de-epoxidized forms A plus Z, generally exhibited the most dramatic increases in response to growth irradiance. We conclude from these results that O2 photoreduction occurs at higher rates in leaves acclimated to high irradiance, despite increases in xanthophyll cycle-dependent energy dissipation, and that increases in leaf antioxidants protect against this potential oxidative stress.  相似文献

The development of desiccation tolerance by vegetative tissues was an important step in the plants’ conquest of land. To counteract the oxidative stress generated under these conditions the xanthophyll cycle plays a key role. Recent reports have shown that desiccation itself induces de-epoxidation of xanthophyll cycle pigments, even in darkness. The aim of the present work was to study whether this trait is a common response of all desiccation-tolerant plants. The xanthophyll cycle activity and the maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II (F v/F m) as well as β-carotene and α-tocopherol contents were compared during slow and rapid desiccation and subsequent rehydration in six species pairs (with one desiccation-sensitive and one desiccation-tolerant species each) belonging to different taxa. Xanthophyll cycle pigments were de-epoxidised in darkness concomitantly with a decrease in F v/F m during slow dehydration in all the desiccation-tolerant species and in most of the desiccation-sensitive ones. De-epoxidation was reverted in darkness by re-watering in parallel with the recovery of the initial F v/F m. The stability of the β-carotene pool confirmed that its hydroxylation did not contribute to zeaxanthin formation. The α-tocopherol content of most of the species did not change during dehydration. Because it is a common mechanism present in all the desiccation-tolerant taxa and in some desiccation-sensitive species, and considering its role in antioxidant processes and in excess energy dissipation, the induction of the de-epoxidation of xanthophyll cycle pigments upon dehydration in the dark could be understood as a desiccation tolerance-related response maintained from the ancestral clades in the initial steps of land occupation by plants.  相似文献

To determine how the use of a given rootstock can influence the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus of the scion under salt stress, the growth, gas exchange, photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, xanthophyll cycle, and chloroplast ultrastructure of nongrafted, self-grafted, and pumpkin-grafted (hereafter referred to as rootstock-grafted) cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants were investigated at day 15 after being treated with 90 mM NaCl. The reductions in plant growth of the rootstock-grafted plants were lower than those of the nongrafted and self-grafted plants under 90 mM NaCl. The net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, maximal and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, photochemical quenching coefficient, and effective quantum-use efficiency of PSII in the light-adapted state of the nongrafted and self-grafted plants were significantly decreased under 90 mM NaCl. However, these reductions were alleviated when the cucumber plants were grafted onto the pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) rootstock. The intercellular CO2 concentrations were significantly increased in the nongrafted and self-grafted plants under 90 mM NaCl, whereas it was decreased in the rootstock-grafted plants. Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and the deepoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle were significantly increased under 90 mM NaCl, particularly in the rootstockgrafted plants, suggesting the rootstock-grafted plants had higher potential to dissipate excess excitation energy and reduce the probability of photodamage to PSII. Under 90 mM NaCl, the number of grana was reduced, the thylakoids were swollen, and starch granules accumulated in all plants. However, the damage of chloroplast ultrastructure was alleviated in the rootstock-grafted plants. Taken together, the use of C. moschata rootstock alleviated salt stress in cucumber plants by delaying photoinhibition, probably due to a lower incidence of both stomatal and nonstomatal factors limiting photosynthesis.  相似文献

Over-expression of chloroplastic glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase gene (LeGPAT) increased unsaturated fatty acid contents in phosphatidylglycerol (PG) of thylakoid membrane in tomato. The effect of this increase on the xanthophyll cycle and chloroplast antioxidant enzymes was examined by comparing wild type (WT) tomato with the transgenic (TG) lines at chilling temperature (4 °C) under low irradiance (100 μmol m−2 s−1). Net photosynthetic rate and the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) 2 (Fv/Fm) in TG plants decreased more slowly during chilling stress and Fv/Fm recovered faster than that in WT plants under optimal conditions. The oxidizable P700 in both WT and TG plants decreased during chilling stress under low irradiance, but recovered faster in TG plants than in the WT ones. During chilling stress, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and the de-epoxidized ratio of xanthophyll cycle in WT plants were lower than those of TG tomatoes. The higher activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in TG plants resulted in the reduction of O2 −· and H2O2 contents during chilling stress. Hence the increase in content of unsaturated fatty acids in PG by the over-expression of LeGPAT could alleviate photoinhibition of PS2 and PS1 by improving the de-epoxidized ratio of xanthophyll cycle and activities of SOD and APX in chloroplast.  相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the photosynthetic and UV‐screening pigments in needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) saplings were studied in a UV‐exclusion field chamber experiment in northern Finland (67°N) during 2001–2002. The chambers held filters that excluded both UVB and UVA, only UVB, transmitted all UV, or lacked filters. Analyses of control needles (no filter and polyethene filter) showed that the first changes to occur in spring (end of April) was an abrupt increase in the epoxidation state (EPS) of the xanthophyll cycle pigments, likely in relation with the beginning of the photosynthetic activity. The concentration of chlorophyll, lutein, neoxanthin, α‐carotene, β‐carotene, and the size of the xanthophyll cycle pool (violaxanthin+antheraxanthin+zeaxanthin=VAZ) changed only later when needles reached their summer photosynthesis state. Exclusion of UV radiation significantly affected the xanthophyll cycle but not the other photosynthetic pigments analysed. Interestingly, the effects on xanthophylls were dependent on the sampling date. Under UVA/B‐exclusion, the EPS was increased and VAZ pool size was unchanged in April, whereas EPS remained unchanged and the VAZ pool size was reduced in May and June. The existence of two sustained and active antenna modes during winter and summer could be an explanation for the specific UV‐exclusion effect in the different season. A high‐performance liquid chromatography analysis of soluble phenolics showed that the exclusion of UVA/B radiation caused a significant effect on five compounds out of 46 studied, without affecting the concentration of the total soluble phenolics. Under UVA/B‐exclusion, the concentration of three of them (secoisolariciresinol‐glucopyranoside, two unknown) was reduced while the concentration of dicoumaroyl‐astragalin and pinosylvin monomethylether was increased compared with both controls separately. In general, the exclusion of UVA/B caused a stronger effect than the exclusion of UVB on both photosynthetic and UV screening pigments. The effects of UV radiation on xanthophyll cycle pigments were season‐specific and detectable only under stressful spring conditions (freezing temperatures and high irradiance due to snow reflection). The effect on the xanthophyll cycle could be a direct consequence of UV treatments, or an indirect consequence of the changed flavonoid composition, or a combination of both.  相似文献

Lichen thalli were exposed to 4 regimes differing in irradiance and duration of irradiation. Photosynthetic efficiency of thalli was monitored by chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and xanthophyll cycle analysis. Maximal quantum yield of photosystem 2 (FV/FM) decreased gradually with time in long-term treatment. The effect of additional short-term high irradiance (HI) treatment applied each 24 h was not significant. Nevertheless, short-term HI applied repeatedly on thalli kept in the dark led to a significant decrease of FV/FM. Non-photochemical quenching recorded during the long-term treatment corresponded to the content of zeaxanthin (Z). In short-term treatment, however, proportion of Z (and antheraxanthin) to total amount of xanthophyll cycle pigments recovered to the initial values every 24 h after each repeated short-term HI event in thalli kept in dark. Thus duration of irradiation rather than irradiance and frequency of HI events is important for a decrease in primary photosynthetic processes in wet thalli of Lasallia pustulata. Rapidly responding photoprotective mechanisms, such as conversion of xanthophyll cycle pigments, are involved mainly in short-term irradiation events, even at HI.  相似文献
