The dosimetric package used inside Biorack on board STS76, STS81 and STS84 comprises passive detector stacks built from plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTDs), thermoluminescence detectors (TLDs) and one or two active DOSTEL (DOSimetric TELescope) units using planar silicon detectors. Five passive detector stacks were exposed at different places inside the BIORACK incubators and in different stowage positions. DOSTEL units were exposed inside the 22 degrees C incubator in all flights. Mission integrated dose measurements, particle fluence rates and neutron doses are obtained from the passive detector stacks. These results are complemented by time resolved particle counts and dose rates and linear energy transfer (LET) spectra separately for the contribution of the trapped particles and the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) as a result of the DOSTEL measurements. In addition, it was possible to investigate the anisotropy of the radiation field inside Biorack by the use of a second DOSTEL unit on STS84. Since all exposures are during a solar minimum period, the total radiation exposure is of a similar extent for all flights, although position differences in dose rate up to a factor of two are observed. Particle fluence rates show lower variations. Mission averaged mean quality factors (Q) determined from the LET spectra are 2.0+/-0.1; the deduced dose equivalent rates range from 631 to 716 microSv/day.  相似文献

Equipment that generates microwave radiation (MWR) spanning the frequency range of 300 MHz–100 GHz is becoming more common. While MWR lacks sufficient energy to break chemical bonds, the disagreement as to whether MWR exposure is detrimental to cellular dysfunction may be difficult to clarify using complex systems such as whole animals, cells, or cell extracts. Recently, the high frequency range of terahertz (THz) radiation has been explored and sources of radiation and its detectors have been developed. THz radiation is associated with the frequency interval from 100 GHz to 20 THz and constitutes the next frontier in imaging science and technology. In the present study, we investigated the effect of radiation in the low frequency THz range (100 GHz) on two defined molecular interactions. First, the interaction of soluble or immobilized calf alkaline phosphatase with the substrate p‐nitrophenylphosphate and second, the interaction between an antibody (mouse monoclonal anti‐DNP) and its antigen (DNP). Irradiation of enzyme either prior to addition of substrate or during the enzymatic reaction resulted in small but significant reductions in enzyme activity. These differences were not observed if the enzyme had previously been immobilized onto plastic microwells. Exposure of immobilized antigen to radiation did not influence the ability of the antigen to interact with antibody. However, irradiation appeared to decrease the stability of previously formed antigen–antibody complexes. Our data suggest that 100 GHz radiation can induce small but statistically significant alterations in the characteristics of these two types of biomolecular interactions. The infrared radiation caused by the heat of reaction of an enantioselective enzyme-catalyzed transformation can be detected by modern photovoltaic infrared (IR)-thermographic cameras equipped with focal-plane array detectors. Specifically, in the lipase-catalyzed enantioselective acylation of racemic 1-phenylethanol, the (R)- and (S)-substrates are allowed to react separately in the wells of microtiter plates, the (R)-alcohol showing hot spots in the IR-thermographic images. Thus, highly enantioselective enzymes can be identified at kinetic resolution.  相似文献

The multileaf collimator (MLC) is the standard device used to shape radiation beams for 3-d conformal and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Due to the inherent properties of MLC, there is a small amount of radiation transmitted through the leaves, called radiation transmission (RT). Accurate measurements of this radiation are required to commission and validate IMRT-capable treatment planning systems because this radiation may impact the dosimetry of IMRT-calculated dose distributions. This work compares several detectors in the measurement of RT for a micro-multileaf collimation system. The results show that there are statistically significant differences in the measured RT values between detectors from 3.5 to 12.5% for the same MLC model and less than 0.2% relative to the isocentre dose for an open reference field. However, although small in magnitude, these differences may impact the dosimetry of IMRT treatment planning by up to 1.78 Gy to the healthy tissue surrounding the target for a treatment of 60 Gy in 30 fractions. By the later, these differences must be included as a source of uncertainty in IMRT dose delivery. Also, it must be established which detector offers the most reliable results in the measurement of the RT by using Monte Carlo simulation methods.  相似文献

Due to the increasing popularity of electron cryo-microscopy (cryoEM) in the structural analysis of large biological molecules and macro-molecular complexes and the need for simple, rapid and efficient readout, there is a persuasive need for improved detectors. Commercial detectors, based on phosphor/fibre optics-coupled CCDs, provide adequate performance for many applications, including electron diffraction. However, due to intrinsic light scattering within the phosphor, spatial resolution is limited. Careful measurements suggest that CCDs have superior performance at lower resolution while all agree that film is still superior at higher resolution. Consequently, new detectors are needed based on more direct detection, thus avoiding the intermediate light conversion step required for CCDs. Two types of direct detectors are discussed in this review. First, there are detectors based on hybrid technology employing a separate pixellated sensor and readout electronics connected with bump bonds-hybrid pixel detectors (HPDs). Second, there are detectors, which are monolithic in that sensor and readout are all in one plane (monolithic active pixel sensor, MAPS). Our discussion is centred on the main parameters of interest to cryoEM users, viz. detective quantum efficiency (DQE), resolution or modulation transfer function (MTF), robustness against radiation damage, speed of readout, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of independent pixels available for a given detector.  相似文献

Performance comparison of selected photodiodes for usage as radiation detectors for radio-protection is presented. In this study, based on the criteria of minimum sensitive area of 5 mm2, minimum half angle 60° and low cost, four commercial photodiodes are selected for evaluation: SFH205, SFH206, BPW34, and BPX90F. Photodiodes are low cost, small volume and lightweight detectors. As an electronic transducer, photodiode detector is an attractive approach for the development of low power portable electronic dosimeter for direct-reading real-time radiation dose measurement. The devices have been studied with respect to sensitivity (efficiency) in X-rays and gamma rays detection, repeatability and linearity in air kerma.  相似文献

Due to their high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio, charge-coupled devices (CCDs) have been the preferred optical photon detectors of astronomers for several decades. CCDs are flown in space as the main detection instrument on several well-known missions, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton or the Cassini Probe. Also, CCDs are frequently used in satellite star trackers which provide attitude information to the satellite orientation system. However, one major drawback is their extreme vulnerability to radiation, which is readily abundant in space. Here, we shall give a brief overview of the radiation effects on CCDs, and mention ways how to mitigate the effects in other ways than merely increase shielding, such as cooling and annealing. As an example, we have investigated the radiation hardness of a particular CCD, the so-called CCD47-20 from Marconi Applied Technologies (now E2V), by exposing it to radiation fields representing the radiation environment found in a highly elliptic orbit crossing the Van-Allen radiation belts. Two engineering-grade CCDs were irradiated with proton beams and photons, and effects of increased bulk dark current, surface dark current and inversion threshold voltage shifts were observed and are quantified.  相似文献

Space radiation dosimetry measurements have been made onboard the Space Shuttle STS-65 in the Second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2: 28.5 degrees x 300 km: 14.68 days) and the STS-79 in the 4th Shuttle MIR mission (S/MM#4: 51.6 degrees x 300-400km: 10.2 days). In these measurements, three kinds of detectors were used; one is a newly developed active detector telescope called "Real-time Radiation Monitoring Device (RRMD-I for IML-2 and RRMD-II with improved triggering system for S/MM#4)" utilizing silicon semi-conductor detectors and the other detectors are conventional passive detectors of thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) and CR-39 plastic track detectors. The main contribution to dose equivalent for particles with LET > 5.0 keV/micrometer (IML-2) and LET > 3.5 keV/micrometer (S/MM#4) is seen to be due to galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and the contribution of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is less than 5% (IML-2: 28.5 degrees x 300 km) and 15% (S/MM#4: 51.6 degrees x 400 km) in the above RRMD LET detection conditions. For the whole LET range (> 0.2 kev/micrometer) obtained by TLDs and CR-39 in these two typical orbits (a small inclination x low altitude and a large inclination x high altitude), absorbed dose rates range from 94 to 114 microGy/day, dose equivalent rates from 186 to 207 microSv/day and average quality factors from 1.82 to 2.00 depending on the locations and directions of detectors inside the Spacelab at the highly protected IML-2 orbit (28.5 degrees x 300 km), and also, absorbed dose rates range from 290 to 367 microGy/day, dose equivalent rates from 582 to 651 microSv/day and average quality factors from 1.78 to 2.01 depending on the dosimeter packages around the RRMD-II "Detector Unit" at the S/MM#4 orbit (5l.6 degrees x 400km). In general, it is seen that absorbed doses depend on the orbit altitude (SAA trapped particles contribution dominant) and dose equivalents on the orbit inclination (GCR contribution dominant). The LET distributions obtained by two different types of active and passive detectors, RRMDs and CR-39, are in good agreement for LET of 15 - 200 kev/micrometer and difference of these distributions in the regions of LET < 15 kev/micrometer and LET > 200 kev/micrometer can be explained by considering characteristics of CR-39 etched track formation especially for the low LET tracks and chemical etching conditions.  相似文献

The uneven shielding of the International Space Station from the vessel hull, racks and experiments produces a modulation of the internal radiation environment. A detailed knowledge of this environment, and therefore of the Station's shielding effectiveness, is mandatory for an accurate assessment of radiation risk. We present here the first 3D measurements of the Station's radiation environment, discriminating particle trajectories and LET, made possible using the detection capability of the ALTEA-space detector. We provide evidence for a strong (factor ≈ 3) anisotropy in the inner integral LET for high-LET particles (LET > 50?keV/μm) showing a minimum along the longitudinal station axis (most shielded) and a maximum normal to it. Integrating over all measured LETs, the anisotropy is strongly reduced, showing that unstopped light ions plus the fragments produced by heavier ions approximately maintain flux/LET isotropy. This suggests that, while changing the quality of radiation, the extra shielding along the station main axis is not producing a benefit in terms of total LET. These features should be taken into account (1) when measuring radiation with detectors that cannot distinguish the direction of the impinging radiation or that are unidirectional, (2) when planning radiation biology experiments on the ISS, and (3) when simulating the space radiation environment for experiments on the ground. A novel analysis technique that fully exploits the ability to retrieve the angular distribution of the radiation is also presented as well as the angular particle flux and LET characteristic of three geomagnetic zones measured during 2009 by the ALTEA-space detector. This technique is applied to the ALTEA-space detector, but a wider applicability to other detectors is suggested.  相似文献

Modern radiotherapy facilities for cancer treatment such as the Heavy Ion Therapy Center (HIT) in Heidelberg, Germany, allow for sub-millimeter precision in dose deposition. For measurement of such dose distributions and characterization of the particle beams, detectors with high spatial resolution are necessary. Here, a detector based on the commercially available COTS photodiode (BPW-34) is presented. When applied in hadronic beams of protons and carbon ions, the detector reproduces dose distribution well, but its response decreases rapidly by radiation damage. However, for MeV photon beams, the detector exhibits a similar behavior as found in diode detectors usually applied in radiotherapy.  相似文献

A population genetic survey of 149 persons who were born and have permanently lived in the contaminated zones of the Semipalatinsk region has been performed. A cytogenetic study has demonstrated that the frequency of aberrant cells is 1.7-3 times higher than control parameters. The total frequencies of chromosome aberrations are 3.43 +/- 0.48, 3.1 +/- 0.3, 1.8 +/- 0.2, and 1.15 +/- 0.17 aberrations per 100 cells in the populations of the extreme radiation risk (ERR), maximum radiation risk (MaxRR), minimum radiation risk (MinRR), and control zones, respectively. The high chromosome aberration rate in all three zones of radiation risk has been detected mainly due to radiation-induced chromosome markers, including paired fragments (1.2 +/- 0.2, 0.94 +/- 0.13, and 0.43 +/- 0.06 per 100 cells, respectively), dicentric and ring chromosomes (0.44 +/- 0.04, 0.45 +/- 0.07, and 0.11 +/- 0.02 per 100 cells, respectively), and stable chromosome aberrations (0.74 +/- 0.16, 0.8 +/- 0.1, and 0.63 +/- 0.13 per 100 cells, respectively). The qualitative spectra of the cytogenetic lesions observed in these groups indicate a mutagenic effect of ionizing radiation on chromosomes in the populations studied.  相似文献

We report a simple and fast microwave-assisted method to grow silver nanoparticle films with tunable plasmon resonance band. Microwaving time controls nucleation and growth as well as particle agglomeration, cluster formation, particle morphology, and the plasmonic properties. Films produced with times shorter than 30 s presented a single well-defined plasmon resonance band (~ 400 nm), whereas films produced with times longer than 40 s presented higher wavelength resonances modes (> 500 nm). Plasmon band position and intensity can be easily tuned by controlling microwaving time and power. SEM and AFM images suggested the growth of asymmetrical silver nanoparticles. Simulated extinction spectra considering particles as spheres, hemispheres, and spherical caps were performed. The films were employed to enhance the sensitivity of ionizing radiation detectors assessed by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) via plasmon-enhanced luminescence. By tuning the plasmon resonance band to overlap with the OSL stimulation (530 nm), luminescence enhancements of greater than 100-fold were obtained, demonstrating the importance of tuning the plasmon resonance band to maximize the OSL intensity and detector sensitivity. This versatile method to produce silver nanoparticle films with tunable plasmonic properties is a promising platform for developing small-sized radiation detectors and advanced sensing technologies.

The process of hard X-ray (HXR) generation in plasma focus (PF) chambers was studied experimentally. The radiation was recorded using scintillation detectors with a high time resolution and thermoluminescent detectors in combination with the method of absorbing filters. Time-resolved analysis of the processes of neutron and X-ray generation in PFs is performed. The spectra of HXR emission from PF chambers with deuterium and deuterium–tritium fillings are determined. In experiments with PF chambers filled with a deuterium–tritium mixture, in addition to the HXR pulse with photon energies of up to 200–300 keV, a γ-ray pulse with photon energies of up to 2.5–3.0 MeV is recorded, and a mechanism of its generation is proposed.  相似文献

Radiation assessment and protection in space is the first step in planning future missions to the Moon and Mars, where mission and number of space travelers will increase and the protection of the geomagnetic shielding against the cosmic radiation will be absent. In this framework, the shielding effectiveness of two flexible materials, Kevlar and Nextel, were tested, which are largely used in the construction of spacecrafts. Accelerator-based tests clearly demonstrated that Kevlar is an excellent shield for heavy ions, close to polyethylene, whereas Nextel shows poor shielding characteristics. Measurements on flight performed onboard of the International Space Station and of the Foton-M3 capsule have been carried out with special attention to the neutron component; shielded and unshielded detectors (thermoluminescence dosemeters, bubble detectors) were exposed to a real radiation environment to test the shielding properties of the materials under study. The results indicate no significant effects of shielding, suggesting that thin shields in low-Earth Orbit have little effect on absorbed dose.  相似文献

Alpha track detectors used in a previous investigation of the US National Cancer Institute and the China Ministry of Health on indoor radon ((222)Rn) in Gansu, China, proved to be influenced by (220)Rn (thoron), thus overestimating the (222)Rn level. Therefore, the detector was improved used in the previous survey. The new detectors allow discrimination between the two isotopes without any disturbance of the (222)Rn measurement. With this detector, a semi-annual study was conducted in 49 traditional dwellings of a village in Gansu. The arithmetic (AM) and geometric (GM) mean (222)Rn concentrations were 120 +/- 61 and 105 Bq m(-3) (with geometric standard deviation GSD = 1.8), respectively, while the mean (220)Rn concentrations at 2.5 cm wall distance were 430 +/- 210 Bq m(-3) (AM) and 350 Bq m(-3) (GM) with GSD = 2.3. The high thoron concentrations demonstrate the importance of the (220)Rn contribution to radiation exposure, in the investigated area. The actual level of indoor (222)Rn was about three times lower than that in the previous investigation which was affected by (220)Rn. A correction method for the radon results of the previous study is proposed, which provides (222)Rn and (220)Rn values comparable with those obtained in the study presented here.  相似文献

The effect of radiation combined with intraperitoneal administration of Z-100, an immunomodulatory arabinomannan extracted fromMycobacterium tuberculosis, was studied using Meth A fibrosarcoma in BALB/c mice and metastasis of Lewis lung carcinoma, 3LL, in C57BL/6 mice.In mice bearing Meth A fibrosarcoma, a moderate degree of growth inhibition was observed in the group of single therapy with Z-100 or radiation (10 Gy). When radiation was combined with Z-100, the tumor growth was significantly inhibited. In mice bearing 3LL, slight inhibition of pulmonary metastasis was observed in the group of single therapy, while significant degrees of inhibition of primary tumor growth and pulmonary metastasis were observed in the combination group. This suggests the usefulness of combined use of Z-100 in radiation therapy.Abbreviations 3LL Lewis lung carcinoma - IL-3 Interleukin-3 - BRM(s) Biological response modifier(s) - N-CWS Nocardia-Cell wall skeleton - CSF Colony stimulating factor  相似文献

Simple Methods for the Calibration of Light Measuring Equipment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Simple methods are described for
  • a) absolute calibration of thermal radiation detectors (thermopiles, bolometers);
  • b) absolute calibration at various wavelengths of photoelectric devices;
  • c) obtaining the relative spectral sensitivity of the detector systems of spectrofluorimeters.
The procedures require no special standard lamp or other exotic equipment. The methods depend on the computation of the radiation characteristics of an ordinary tungsten lamp at various measured voltages and currents.  相似文献

Radiological personnel represent workers exposed to low cumulative doses of radiation. As their surveillance is generally based on physical dosimetry, there is little or inconclusive information on biological effects due to radiation exposure at these doses. We aimed to explore the extent of chromosomal damage in circulating lymphocytes of hospital workers (technicians, nurses and physicians) chronically exposed to a very low level of radiation using conventional and molecular cytogenetic analyses (chromosome painting with chromosomes #2, #3 and #10 as probe cocktail). Compared with controls, exposed workers displayed a significant increase in the frequency of aberrant lymphocytes (1.26+/-0.11/100 cells versus 1.63+/-0.17/100 cells). In particular, exposed technicians showed significantly higher mean values than nurses or physicians (3.68+/-1.17/100 cells versus 1.36+/-0.18/100 cells and 1.36+/-0.09/100 cells, respectively). Interestingly, we found that the chromosomal damage was prevalently expressed as chromatid-type aberrations. Chromosome painting indicated that the frequency of chromosome rearrangements (CR; translocations and dicentrics pooled together) was approximately comparable between radiological workers and the control group. Moreover, we did not detect any significant difference due to radiation exposure when CR rates were considered separately for each of the three chromosomes in the probe cocktail.  相似文献

Mouse embryos on day 8 of gestation were irradiated with negative pions (12.5-100 rad) or 200 kV X-rays (12.5-150 rad). Misonidazole (MISO), a hypoxic cell radiosensitizer, was applied 30 min before exposure. On day 13 the fetuses were examined for lethality, growth retardation and malformation. No significant embryolethal effects were observed after irradiation alone in the dose range of 12.5-100 rad (X-rays or pions). However, MISO alone and in combination with radiation led to high rates of lethality. The frequency of growth retardation was significantly increased at 100 rad and in combined treatments at low radiation doses. MISO and irradiation with 50 rad and more induced complex damages consisting of multiple and severe malformations and growth retardation. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for teratogenic effects was 1.6. In conclusion, the combined application of MISO and radiation of different LET revealed a strong enhancing action compared to single treatments. The extent of enhancement depends on both radiation quality and dose.  相似文献

The implosion dynamics of a condensed Z-pinch at load currents of up to 3.5 MA and a current rise time of 100 ns was studied experimentally at the Angara-5-1 facility. To increase the energy density, 1- to 3-mm-diameter cylinders made of a deuterated polyethylene?agar-agar mixture or microporous deuterated polyethylene with a mass density of 0.03–0.5 g/cm3 were installed in the central region of the loads. The plasma spatiotemporal characteristics were studied using the diagnostic complex of the Angara-5-1 facility, including electron-optical streak and frame imaging, time-integrated X-ray imaging, soft X-ray (SXR) measurements, and vacuum UV spectroscopy. Most information on the plasma dynamics was obtained using a ten-frame X-ray camera (Е > 100 eV) with an exposure of 4 ns. SXR pulses were recorded using photoemissive vacuum X-ray detectors. The energy characteristics of neutron emission were measured using the time-offlight method with the help of scintillation detectors arranged along and across the pinch axis. The neutron yield was measured by activation detectors. The experimental results indicate that the plasma dynamics depends weakly on the load density. As a rule, two stages of plasma implosion were observed. The formation of hot plasma spots in the initial stage of plasma expansion from the pinch axis was accompanied by short pulses of SXR and neutron emission. The neutron yield reached (0.4–3) × 1010 neutrons/shot and was almost independent of the load density due to specific features of Z-pinch dynamics.  相似文献
