Barley straw, either treated with anhydrous ammonia (40 g/kg for 28 days) or untreated, was chaffed and given to sheep in an intake and digestibility trial, or was ground and incubated in nylon bags in the rumen of sheep fed on lucerne or untreated or ammoniated straw.Ammoniation increased the N content from 2.45 to 10.63 g/kg dry matter (DM). Of the increment, 67% was retained in water-soluble form and 11.5% was in the cell wall organic matter (CWOM). The water-soluble N appeared to be retained by sheep as well as urea-N given with untreated straw; digestibility coefficients obtained in vivo, and by nylon bag incubation, suggested that N in CWOM was largely unavailable.Ammonia treatment increased the potential digestibility (measured by nylon bag incubation) of DM and CWOM by 23 and 29%, respectively. Digestibility in vivo of OM increased from 0.42 to 0.60 and of CWOM from 0.48 to 0.67. Intake of ammoniated straw increased over the 23-day feeding period, while that of untreated straw given with or without urea was constant or declined.  相似文献

Barley straw treated with anhydrous ammonia at a rate of 40 g per kg of straw dry matter (DM) and rolled barley were offered to 20 steers weighing initially 350 kg. Each steer was offered in total approximately 600 kg of straw DM and approximately 525 kg of barley DM. Ten steers were offered the straw alone in the long form at the beginning of the trial followed by the rolled barley alone. The remaining 10 steers were offered straw which had been ground through a 40-mm screen and mixed with the rolled barley in a complete diet. Dry matter digestibility coefficients of the ammonia-treated straw and the mixed straw plus barley diet were 0.52 and 0.57 ± 0.026, respectively. The DM digestibility coefficient of rolled grain in the mixed diet was predicted from the digestibility of starch to be 0.78 and the DM digestibility of straw in the mixed diet, determined by difference, was 0.39. Although steers offered the straw followed by rolled barley took on average 39 days longer to consume their total food allowance, cold dressed carcass weights of the two groups were not significantly different nor was there any difference in the carcass composition of the two groups of steers as determined by specific gravity measurements. Maintenance energy requirements were calculated for the two groups of steers and although the same amount of food was consumed by both groups and the energy required for maintenance was higher in the group offered straw followed by barley, the depression in the energy available from straw offered in a mixed diet caused the same total amount of metabolizable energy to be available for carcass gain to both groups.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate effects of leaves of mulberry tree (Morus alba) as a protein supplement to isonitrogenously replace rapeseed meal (RSM) on performance of growing lambs offered ammoniated rice straw (ABRS) (Trial 1), and to evaluate the digestive characteristics of the ABRS supplemented with different ratios of RSM and mulberry leaves in terms of in vitro gas production (Trial 2). In Trial 1, 45 Huzhou lambs were divided into five equal groups according to their body weight and gender. Lambs in each group were kept in three pens (male, female and mixed (one male and two females)), and received one of the following dietary treatments: 100 g RSM (A), 75 g RSM plus 60 g mulberry leaves (B), 50 g RSM plus 120 g mulberry leaves (C), 25 g RSM plus 180 g mulberry leaves (D), and 240 g mulberry leaves (E). All animals were given ABRS ad libitum along with 100 g ground corn per head per day. The intake of ABRS was slightly increased with the supplementary level of mulberry leaves, and hence total intake increased with the increasing level of mulberry leaves. The growth rates were higher in diets A and E than those in other treatments (P<0.05), with little difference between diets A and E, and the slowest in C. Animals of all genders showed a similar trend, though male lambs was higher in weight gain than the female. While feed efficiency was higher in diet A, concentrate consumption per kilogram of weight gain was lower when higher level of mulberry leaves was supplemented (diets D and E). Feed cost per kilogram gain was lower in diets E and A compared to other treatments. Degradation of dry matter in the rumen of sheep were higher for mulberry leaves than for RSM, but crude protein was less degraded for mulberry leaves than for RSM. The potential GP was significantly higher in diet A than those in B, C and D (P<0.05), and higher in E than in C (P<0.05) (Trial 2), indicating a negative associate effect of mulberry leaves and RSM on digestion. It is inferred that mulberry leaves may be used as a protein supplement to ammoniated straw diets to fully substitute for RSM, but these two supplements should unlikely be supplemented together to avoid the negative associate effect.  相似文献

Nitroethane inhibits the growth of certain zoonotic pathogens such as Campylobacter and Salmonella spp., foodborne pathogens estimated to cause millions of human infections each year, and enhances the Salmonella- and Escherichia coli-killing effect of an experimental chlorate product being developed as a feed additive to kill these bacteria immediately pre-harvest. Limited studies have shown that nitroethane inhibits ruminal methane production, which represents a loss of 2-12% of the host's gross energy intake and contributes to global warming and destruction of the ozone layer. The present study was conducted to assess the effects of 14-day oral nitroethane administration, 0 (0X), 80 (1X) or 160 (2X)mg nitroethane/kg body weight per day on ruminal and fecal E. coli and Campylobacter, ruminal and fecal methane-producing and nitroethane-reducing activity, whole animal methane emissions, and ruminal and fecal fermentation balance in Holstein steers (n=6 per treatment) averaging 403+/-26 (SD) kg BW. An experimental chlorate product was fed the day following the last nitroethane administration to determine effects on E. coli and Campylobacter. The experimental chlorate product decreased (P<0.001) fecal, but not ruminal (P>0.05) E. coli concentrations by 1000- and 10-fold by 24 and 48 h, respectively, after chlorate feeding when compared to pre-treatment concentrations (>5.7 log(10) colony forming units/g). No effects (P>0.05) of nitroethane or the experimental chlorate product were observed on fecal Campylobacter concentrations; Campylobacter were not recovered from ruminal contents. Nitroethane treatment decreased (P<0.01) ruminal (8.46, 7.91 and 4.74+/-0.78 micromol/g/h) and fecal (3.90, 1.36 and 1.38+/-0.50 micromol/g/h) methane-producing activity for treatments 0X, 1X and 2X, respectively. Administration of nitroethane increased (P<0.001) nitroethane-reducing activity in ruminal, but not fecal samples. Day of study affected ruminal (P<0.0001) but not fecal (P>0.05) methane-producing and nitroethane-reducing activities (P<0.01); treatment by day interactions were not observed (P>0.05). Ruminal accumulations of acetate decreased (P<0.05) in 2X-treated steers when compared with 0X- and 1X-treated steers, but no effect (P>0.05) of nitroethane was observed on propionate, butyrate or the acetate to propionate ratio. Whole animal methane emissions, expressed as L/day or as a proportion of gross energy intake (%GEI), were unaffected by nitroethane treatment (P>0.05), and were not correlated (P>0.05) with ruminal methane-producing activity. These results demonstrate that oral nitroethane administration reduces ruminal methane-producing activity but suggest that a microbial adaptation, likely due to an in situ enrichment of ruminal nitroethane-reducing bacteria, may cause depletion of nitroethane, at least at the 1X administration dose, to concentrations too low to be effective. Further research is warranted to determine if the optimization of dosage of nitroethane or related nitrocompouds can maintain the enteropathogen control and anti-methanogen effect in fed steers.  相似文献

Current techniques for measuring feed intake in housed cattle are both expensive and time-consuming making them unsuitable for use on commercial farms. Estimates of individual animal intake are required for assessing production efficiency. The aim of this study was to predict individual animal intake using parameters that can be easily obtained on commercial farms including feeding behaviour, liveweight and age. In total, 80 steers were used, and each steer was allocated to one of two diets (40 per diet) which consisted of (g/kg; DM) forage to concentrate ratios of either 494:506 (MIXED) or 80:920 (CONC). Individual daily fresh weight intakes (FWI; kg/day) were recorded for each animal using 32 electronic feeders over a 56-day period, and individual DM intakes (DMI; kg/day) subsequently calculated. Individual feeding behaviour variables were calculated for each day of the measurement period from the electronic feeders and included: total number of visits to the feeder, total time spent at the feeder (TOTFEEDTIME), total time where feed was consumed (TIMEWITHFEED) and average length of time during each visit to the feeder. These feeding behaviour variables were chosen due to ease of obtaining from accelerometers. Four modelling techniques to predict individual animal intake were examined, based on (i) individual animal TOTFEEDTIME relative expressed as a proportion of the dietary group (GRP) and total GRP intake, (ii) multiple linear regression (REG) (iii) random forests (RF) and (iv) support vector regressor (SVR). Each model was used to predict CONC and MIXED diets separately, giving eight prediction models, (i) GRP_CONC, (ii) GRP_MIXED, (iii) REG_CONC, (iv) REG_MIXED, (v) RF_CONC, (vi) RF_MIXED, (vii) SVR_CONC and (viii) SVR_MIXED. Each model was tested on FWI and DMI. Model performance was assessed using repeated measures correlations (R2_RM) to capture the repeated nature of daily intakes compared with standard R2, RMSE and mean absolute error (MAE). REG, RF and SVR models predicted FWI with R2_RM = 0.1–0.36, RMSE = 1.51–2.96 kg and MAE = 1.19–2.49 kg, and DMI with R2_RM = 0.13–0.19, RMSE = 1.15–1.61 kg and MAE = 0.9–1.28 kg. The GRP models predicted FWI with R2_RM = 0.42–0.49, RMSE = 2.76–3.88 kg and MAE = 2.46–3.47 kg, and DMI with R2_RM = 0.32–0.44, RMSE = 0.32–0.44 kg, MAE = 1.55–2.22 kg. Whilst more simplistic GRP models showed higher R2_RM than regression and machine learning techniques, these models had larger errors, likely due to individual feeding patterns not being captured. Although regression and machine learning techniques produced lower errors associated with individual intakes, overall precision of prediction was too low for practical use.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to assess the feeding value of ammoniated and untreated flax straw, wheat straw and wheat chaff in comparison to a mixed bromegrass/alfalfa hay. Anhydrous ammonia was applied to the crop residues at the rate of 35 kg t−1 dry matter. In the first experiment, the effect of ammoniation on crude protein, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL), digestible organic matter in vitro and in vivo (DOM%), ADF and NDF digestibility of the crop residues was determined. In the second experiment, ammoniated flax straw, ammoniated wheat straw, ammoniated and untreated wheat chaff, each supplemented with barley, were compared to bromegrass/alfalfa hay as feed sources for wintering beef cows.Ammoniation increased the crude protein content of the crop residues ∼2-fold. Wheat straw DOM in vitro and in vivo was not increased by ammoniation. Ammoniation increased the DOM in vitro of wheat chaff from 36.3 to 46% and flax straw from 35.2 to 46.3%. The DOM in vivo increased from 53.3 to 63.4% (P < 0.05) for wheat chaff and from 33.9 to 58.4% (P < 0.05) for flax straw following ammoniation. Digestibility of ADF increased from 9.9 to 43.9% (P < 0.05) and of NDF from −0.6 to 37.9% (P < 0.05) in flax straw with ammoniation. Non-significant increases in ADF and NDF digestibility were observed for all other crop residues. Lignin content was not changed in the crop residues by ammoniation. In the winter feeding trial, young cows gained more weight than older cows (P < 0.05). Average daily gains of cows were greatest for hay followed by ammoniated flax straw, ammoniated chaff, untreated chaff and ammoniated wheat straw rations (P < 0.05). Increases in backfat in the younger cows was greatest with hay and ammoniated flax straw, followed by ammoniated chaff and ammoniated wheat straw (P < 0.05). Untreated chaff caused no increase in backfat thickness.Ammoniated flax straw (3.2 kg day−1) given with barley (5.6 kg day−1), is similar in feeding value to medium quality bromegrass/alfalfa hay. Furthermore, wheat chaff and ammoniated wheat chaff show good potential as alternatives to hay in winter feeding.  相似文献

Twenty-eight Simmental-cross steers weighing 200 (± 20.5) kg were used to evaluate grass and whole plant lupin silages in terms of growth rate, dry matter (DM) intake and carcass characteristics. The chemical composition of the silages was determined and Dacron bag procedures were used to estimate DM and protein degradability. The silages were supplemented with either rolled barley or crushed potato. The lupin silage had a lactic acid fermentation with lower DM, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and protein nitrogen than the grass silage but higher crude protein. There were no statistically significant differences in gain, carcass weight, dressing percentage or backfat levels between steers fed lupin or grass silage. DM intake of the silages was not significantly different but there was a tendency for lower DM intake of lupin silage when supplemented with potatoes. There was no difference in DM degradability between lupin and grass silages. Lupin nitrogen degraded at a significantly faster rate (24.5% h−1) compared with the grass (10.4% h−1). The effective degradation of nitrogen at a ruminal fractional outflow rate of 0.05 h−1 was 63.8% and 79.1% for grass and lupin silage, respectively. Ensiling whole plant lupin can produce a high quality silage for use in beef rations.  相似文献

Two feeding experiments and in vitro hind gut fermentation tests were carried out to study the effect of processing sorghum grain on digestion of starch and on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract environment of the horse. In experiment 1, 12 yearling Australian stock horses were blocked on the basis of sex then randomly divided into four equal groups, each containing one castrated male and two females of approximately the same age and weight. Horses were offered at 0800 and 1500 h, 3 kg medium quality liverseed grass (Urochloa panicoides) hay and 2 kg of either oats (O), dry rolled sorghum (DRS), steam-flaked sorghum (SFS) or expanded sorghum (ES). Lanthanum was used as external solid marker for the measurements of apparent total tract digestibility. Fresh water was available ad libitum. Horses were allowed 18 days to adapt to the diets followed by a 3-day faecal collection period. Digestibility of dry matter (DM), and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were higher (P<0.01) for dry rolled and expanded sorghum diets. Digestibility of starch was similar across treatments, averaging 0.98 ± 0.009. Faecal pH values were lower (P<0.05) for the sorghum treatments but remained slightly below neutral (≥6.42) for the steam-flaked sorghum. Sub-samples of fresh faeces were supplemented with glucose and used for in vitro measurement of potential lactate production and final pH. The 20 h in vitro pH was also lower (P<0.05) for the steam-flaked sorghum group. All horses maintained good health and completed the experiment successfully. Results of this experiment indicate that digestibility of starch of processed sorghum is comparable to that of oats (0.97 versus 0.98), but processing sorghum grains may produce conditions favourable for lactate production and accumulation. In experiment 2, eight Australian stock horses were used to study changes in pH and accumulation of VFA and lactate in the different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. In this experiment SFS was compared with DRS. Horses were divided into two groups on the basis of sex and body weight. Each group contained two females and two castrated males. The nutritional management of the horses was the same as for the DRS and SFS groups in experiment 1. At the end of the adaptation period horses were slaughtered at intervals of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 h after morning feeding, one horse per interval per treatment. Samples were collected from the different anatomical regions, and analysed for pH, VFA, and l- and d-lactate. Fermentation in the pre-glandular stomach produced mainly lactic acid and reduced pH to 4.0–4.3 while VFA was the main product in the hind gut. Total and d-lactate were higher (P<0.01) for SFS and a similar trend was observed for total and individual VFA and l-lactate but differences lacked significance (P>0.05). It was concluded that steam flaking of sorghum exacerbates starch fermentation, which may lead to acidosis-related damage to the epithelium of the pre-glandular stomach.  相似文献

Feedlot beef production in tropics and subtropics is being limited by shortage of feed ingredients due to prolonged droughts resulting in high prices of cereal grains and reduced profitability. To alleviate feed shortages and increase profitability for the feedlot industry, it is important to explore underutilized non-conventional resources such as fruit by-products. The current study compared the nutrient intake, digestibility and utilization effects of feeding either 150 g/kg of dried citrus pulp (DCP) or grape pomace (DGP) as alternative dietary fibre sources to 7 months-old Angus steers (281 ± 15.7 kg) under feedlot conditions. Twenty-four steers were assigned to three dietary treatments (8 steers/treatment) in a completely randomised design. Each steer was treated as an experimental unit. Steers were adapted to diets for 21 d followed by 7 d of sample collection during which nutrient intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation parameters, nitrogen retention and microbial N supply were determined. All the data were analysed using the GLIMMIX procedures. Overall, steers fed DGP had the greatest dry matter intake (DM), organic matter (OM) crude protein (CP), ash free neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom), ether extract (EE) and starch intake followed by DCP and control (CON) diets (P ≤ .05). Apparent digestibilities of DM, OM and aNDFom were higher (P ≤ .05) for DCP diet compared to DGP and CON diets. Feeding DCP and DGP diets increased ruminal concentrations of total volatile fatty acids, acetate and isovalerate, and acetate to propionate ratio, and reduced propionate concentrations compared to the CON diet (P ≤ .05). The steers fed the CON diet had the greatest urinary excretions of allantoin, uric acid and total purine derivatives followed by those fed the DCP and DGP diets (P ≤ .05). Nitrogen intake, faecal nitrogen (N), N retention and N efficiency utilization were in the order of DGP > DCP > CON diets (P ≤ .05). Overall, feeding DGP as alternative fibre source to wheat bran improved nutrient intake, retention and efficiency of N utilization but reduced apparent nutrient digestibility compared to DCP. Current finding suggests that DGP may be a better fibre substitute for wheat bran in beef diets than DCP.  相似文献

This study used spectral analysis in 2 separate experiments to examine feeding and lying behavior of Bos taurus steers under 2 housing treatments: a feedlot yard stocked at 12.0 m2 per head with a dry, firm pen surface (NDF) and a “high density ”(HDF) feedlot yard stocked at 6.0 m2 per head with a wet and muddy feedlot pen surface. The study conducted 1 experiment in Autumn, another in Spring. The study measured and analyzed ambient temperatures, relative humidity, and barometric pressure half-hourly onsite, using time series cross-correlations to determine whether steer behavior was associated with them. Both NDF and HDF groups showed similar lying and eating duration. HDF steers exhibited patterns of lying and feeding different from those of NDF steers. Spring observations found a number of correlations with temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure. Health and production data showed no differences between treatments. The results indicate that cattle made successful, short-term changes to changed feedlot environmental conditions. However, confirming these findings requires further replication. Spectral analysis was shown to be sensitive enough to detect behavioral differences between treatments and thus has potential animal welfare assessment tool.  相似文献

Background

Red meat and processed meat have been associated with carcinogenesis at several anatomic sites, but no prospective study has examined meat intake in relation to a range of malignancies. We investigated whether red or processed meat intake increases cancer risk at a variety of sites.

Methods and Findings

The National Institutes of Health (NIH)-AARP (formerly the American Association for Retired Persons) Diet and Health Study is a cohort of approximately 500,000 people aged 50–71 y at baseline (1995–1996). Meat intake was estimated from a food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals within quintiles of red and processed meat intake. During up to 8.2 y of follow-up, 53,396 incident cancers were ascertained. Statistically significant elevated risks (ranging from 20% to 60%) were evident for esophageal, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer, comparing individuals in the highest with those in the lowest quintile of red meat intake. Furthermore, individuals in the highest quintile of processed meat intake had a 20% elevated risk for colorectal and a 16% elevated risk for lung cancer.

Conclusions

Both red and processed meat intakes were positively associated with cancers of the colorectum and lung; furthermore, red meat intake was associated with an elevated risk for cancers of the esophagus and liver.  相似文献

A better understanding of the factors regulating feed efficiency and their potential as predictors of feed efficiency in cattle is needed. Therefore, the potential of three classes of traits, namely, feeding behavior characteristics: daily time at feeder (TF; min/day), time per meal (TM; min), meal size (MS; g DM), eating rate (ER; g DM/min), number of daily meals (NM) and daily visits to the feeder (VF); infrared (IR) thermography traits (°C): eye (EY), cheek (CK), snout (SN), ribs (RB) and hind area (HA); and glucocorticoid levels: fecal cortisol metabolites (FCM; ng/g) and plasma cortisol (PC; ng/ml) as predictors of efficiency were evaluated in 91 steers (436 ± 37 kg) over 2 years (Y1 = 46; Y2 = 45). Additionally, the individual traits of each of these three classes were combined to define three single traits. Individual daily feed intake of a corn silage and high-moisture corn-based diet was measured using an automated feeding system. Body weight and thermographs were taken every 28 days over a period of 140 days. Four productive performance traits were calculated: daily dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), feed to gain ratio (F : G) and residual feed intake (RFI). Steers were also classified into three RFI categories (low-, medium- and high-RFI). Among the feeding behavior characteristics, MS and ER were correlated with all efficiency traits (range: 0.26 to 0.75). Low-RFI (more efficient steers) had smaller MS, lower ER and fewer VF in comparison to high-RFI steers. Less efficient steers (high-RFI) performed more VF during the nocturnal period than more efficient steers. More efficient steers had lower CK and SN temperatures than less efficient steers (28.1°C v. 29.2°C and 30.0°C v. 31.2°C), indicating greater energetic efficiency for low-RFI steers. In terms of glucocorticoids, PC was not correlated with efficiency traits. In contrast, more efficient steers had higher FCM in comparison to less efficient steers (51.1 v. 31.2 ng/g), indicating that a higher cortisol baseline is related to better feed efficiency. The overall evaluation of the three classes of traits revealed that feeding behavior, IR thermography and glucocorticoids accounted for 18%, 59% and 7% of the total variation associated with RFI, respectively. These classes of traits have usefulness in the indirect assessment of feed efficiency in cattle. Among them, IR thermography was the most promising alternative to screen cattle for this feed efficiency. These findings might have application in selection programs and in the better understanding of the biological basis associated with productive performance.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the effect of wheat dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) inclusion, and (2) dietary feed enzyme (FE; Econase XT) supplementation in a finishing diet containing wheat DDGS on fatty acid profile of the pars costalis diaphragmatis muscle of beef cattle. A total of 160 crossbred yearling steers with initial BW of 495±38 kg were blocked by BW and randomized into 16 pens (10 head/pen). The pens were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: (1) control (CON; 10% barley silage and 90% barley grain-based concentrate, dry matter (DM) basis); (2) diet containing 30% wheat DDGS in place of barley grain without FE (WDG); (3) WDG diet supplemented with low FE (WDGL; 1 ml FE/kg DM); and (4) WDG diet supplemented with high FE (2 ml FE/kg DM). The pars costalis diaphragmatis muscle samples were collected from cattle at slaughter at the end of the finishing period (120 days) with a targeted live weight of 650 kg. No differences in organic matter intake, final BW and average daily gain were observed among treatments. However, steers fed WDG had greater (P<0.01) feed conversion ratio than those fed CON, and increasing FE application in wheat DDGS-based diets tended (P<0.10) to linearly decrease feed conversion ratio. In assessing the effects of including WDG diets without FE, concentration of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in muscle tended to be greater (P<0.10) for steers fed WDG than steers fed CON. In addition, inclusion of wheat DDGS into the diet increased (P<0.05) concentration of CLA and vaccenic acid (VA) in muscle and also resulted in a higher (P<0.05) ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFA compared with that from steers fed CON diet. Increasing FE application in wheat DDGS-based diets did not modify the concentrations of individual or total fatty acids. These results suggest that inclusion of wheat DDGS in finishing diets may improve fatty acid profile of beef muscle which could benefit human health.  相似文献

A number of fungal and oomycete plant pathogens of major economic importance feed on their hosts by means of haustoria, which they place inside living plant cells. The underlying mechanisms are poorly understood, partly due to difficulty in preparing haustoria. We have therefore developed a procedure for isolating haustoria from the barley powdery mildew fungus (Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei, Bgh). We subsequently aimed to understand the molecular mechanisms of haustoria through a study of their proteome. Extracted proteins were digested using trypsin, separated by LC, and analysed by MS/MS. Searches of a custom Bgh EST sequence database and the NCBI‐NR fungal protein database, using the MS/MS data, identified 204 haustoria proteins. The majority of the proteins appear to have roles in protein metabolic pathways and biological energy production. Surprisingly, pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), involved in alcoholic fermentation and commonly abundant in fungi and plants, was absent in our Bgh proteome data set. A sequence encoding this enzyme was also absent in our EST sequence database. Significantly, BLAST searches of the recently available Bgh genome sequence data also failed to identify a sequence encoding this enzyme, strongly indicating that Bgh does not have a gene for PDC.  相似文献

Our research group demonstrated that vitamin A restriction affected meat quality of Angus cross and Simmental steers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to highlight the genotype variations in response to dietary vitamin A levels. Commercial Angus and Simmental steers (n = 32 per breed; initial BW = 337.2 ± 5.9 kg; ~8 months of age) were fed a low-vitamin A (LVA) (1017 IU/kg DM) backgrounding diet for 95 days to reduce hepatic vitamin A stores. During finishing, steers were randomly assigned to treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of genotype × dietary vitamin A concentration. The LVA treatment was a finishing diet with no supplemental vitamin A (723 IU vitamin A/kg DM); the control (CON) was the LVA diet plus supplementation with 2200 IU vitamin A/kg DM. Blood samples were collected at three time points throughout the study to analyze serum retinol concentration. At the completion of finishing, steers were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Meat characteristics assessed were intramuscular fat concentration, color, Warner-Bratzler shear force, cook loss and pH. Camera image analysis was used for determination of marbling, 12th rib back fat and longissimus muscle area (LMA). The LVA steers had lower (P < 0.001) serum retinol concentration than CON steers. The LVA treatment resulted in greater (P = 0.03) average daily gain than the CON treatment, 1.52 and 1.44 ± 0.03 kg/day, respectively; however, there was no effect of treatment on final BW, DM intake or feed efficiency. Cooking loss and yield grade were greater and LMA was smaller in LVA steers (P < 0.05). There was an interaction between breed and treatment for marbling score (P = 0.01) and percentage of carcasses grading United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Prime (P = 0.02). For Angus steers, LVA treatment resulted in a 16% greater marbling score than CON (683 and 570 ± 40, respectively) and 27% of LVA Angus steers graded USDA Prime compared with 0% for CON. Conversely, there was no difference in marbling score or USDA Quality Grades between LVA and CON for Simmental steers. In conclusion, feeding a LVA diet during finishing increased marbling in Angus but not in Simmental steers. Reducing the vitamin A level of finishing diets fed to cattle with a high propensity to marble, such as Angus, has the potential to increase economically important traits such as marbling and quality grade without negatively impacting gain : feed or yield grade.  相似文献

Three groups of eight Bonsmara steers per dietary treatment with initial mean masses of ∼ 230 kg were allocated to two whole maize grain-based diets until slaughtered at a final group mass of ca. 385 kg. Two maize cultivars, a soft, yellow, high-lysine (HL2) and a hard, yellow, normal (CG4502) cultivar, mixed with molasses and a urea-mineral mix, were given ad libitum to the steers. Milled maize-crop residue was given separately at 10% of each group's mean intake of the whole maize grain diet. Both cultivars had the same grading and did not differ in their protein and starch content. The high-lysine cultivar's hardness was 19.4 percentage units less than the normal cultivar. The animals fed on the high-lysine cultivar had average daily live (1.55 versus 1.21 kg) and carcass (1.02 versus 0.84 kg) mass gains which were significantly (P ⩽ 0.01) higher than that of the normal cultivar. Both gains were adjusted for the covariate (initial mass) and the nested effect of groups within diets. The mean total dry-matter intake (6.70 versus 6.38 kg day−1) did not differ significantly between treatments. The efficiency of feed conversion (kg DM intake kg−1 gain) per unit of live (4.33 versus 5.29) and warm carcass (6.55 versus 7.67) mass gains was significantly superior (P ⩽ 0.01) for the high lysine cultivar. It is postulated that the softer high-lysine maize grain is broken into smaller particles by mastication during eating and rumination because of its physico-chemical characteristics, thus resulting in its overall better utilization.  相似文献

Several gene linkage maps have been produced for cultivated barley. We have produced a new linkage map for barley, based on a cross between Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum and Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare (Hvs x Hvv), having a higher level of polymorphism than most of the previous barley crosses used for RFLP mapping. Of 133 markers mapped in the Hvs x Hvv F2 population, 69 were previously mapped on other barley maps, and 26 were mapped in rice, maize, or wheat. Two known gene clones were mapped as well as two morphological markers. The distributions of previously mapped markers were compared with their respective barley maps to align the different maps into one consensus map. The distributions of common markers among barley, wheat, rice and maize were also compared, indicating colinear linkage groups among these species. To be considered dual first authorsPublished with the approval of the Director of the Colorado State University/Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献
