The female subsocial shield bug, Parastrachia japonensis, provisions its nymphs by foraging on the ground in the forest during the Japanese rainy season, and the bug uses homing navigation to drag a drupe back to its burrow by the shortest route during the day. To study whether or not this bug performs this provisioning behaviour under different photic conditions, we observed the homing behaviour and homing direction of bugs in the field around the clock and/or under various weather conditions. The bugs foraged the whole day during the busiest provisioning period, and the number of walking bugs was not affected by the different weather conditions. Such navigational behaviour, regardless of the time of the day and the weather conditions, is rare in insect navigation. To test whether the bug uses visual cues, we covered the compound eyes and ocelli with opaque or clear paint just before homing began. During the day and at night, and in all weather conditions, the homing direction of blind bugs, but not those with clear-painted eyes was disoriented, indicating that this species uses visual cues dominantly under all photic conditions.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Females of the monophagous shield bug Parastrachia japonensis Scott provision their nymph-containing nests with high-quality drupes of the single host tree, Schoepfia jasminodora , a resource that is poor and unstable, under an array of variable environmental constraints.
2. Although the number of drupes provisioned is correlated positively with enhanced nymphal development and survival, there is great variability in the number of drupes that females provide.
3. The ability to adjust behaviour and/or physiology, i.e. make risk-sensitive decisions, should be adaptive for organisms such as P. japonensis that are confronted with extreme variability in food availability and in the conditions under which they must forage. To assess whether females of this species use risk-sensitivity to improve their provisioning success, data on the parameters of provisioning activity obtained during a long-term field study were analysed. The relationships between variation in three female-controlled factors during nesting (nest site, active stage during the provisioning season, duration of provisioning activity) and the conditions of three environmental factors (drupe availability, intraspecific competition, weather) were examined. The relationships between all of these factors and provisioning capacity of females were investigated.
5. Nest site, intraspecific competition, and timing of provisioning activity only affected provisioning capacity when drupe availability was extremely good or bad or weather was particularly bad.
6. The findings suggest that females use risk-sensitive decisions to increase provisioning capacity under extreme conditions of low and high drupe availability and inclement weather.  相似文献

Females of Parastrachia japonensis (Hemiptera: Cydnidae) provision nymph-containing nests with drupes of the single host tree, Schoepfia jasminodora (Rosidae: Santales). P. japonensis feeds on the endosperm of these drupes. Foraging females approached and accepted only a few selected drupes for transport to their nests from among the hundreds of drupes scattered on the ground. The characteristics of the drupes that elicited an acceptance response under field conditions were examined. Females estimated the degree of endosperm development using volatile and nonvolatile chemicals in the outer skin as cues and selected only those drupes which had a well-developed endosperm. Although the cues that prompted approach and inspection of a drupe are in the fleshy outer skin, females presented with various substitute drupes coated with outer skin juices of acceptable drupes selected only those they could recognize as a solid mass, suggesting that they used volatile chemicals in the outer skin as cues for approaching and inspecting a drupe and then taste and tactile stimuli as cues for acceptance. Thus, this bug possesses a complex, ecologically sensitive cognitive system that enables it to recognize valuable food items by using reliable cues. The importance of selective foraging by P. japonensis females and the evolutionary significance of this behavior are discussed.  相似文献

Females of the shield bug Parastrachia japonensis Scott progressively provision nymph-containing nests with drupes of the host tree, Schoepfia jasminodora (Olicaceae: Rosidae: Santales). The majority of nests are 5-15 m from the host tree, a distance thought to have been a major impetus for the occurrence of provisioning in this species. However, the function of provisioning is not well understood. We carried out two field experiments to determine whether provisioning is nutritionally important and whether it affords protection against predation. Development of nymphs was significantly delayed and their survival was low in the absence of provisioning, even when nests were within the area of ground on to which the drupes fell, apparently because of the poor quality of the majority of the drupes. Selective provisioning of good-quality drupes by female P. japonensis, a semelparous species, was thus necessary for young nymphs to obtain enough food for their development. Furthermore, even without a female in attendance, having drupes in the nest significantly reduced early mortality in the presence of a predator. Fiddler crabs emerge from burrows on intertidal sand- and mudflats to feed during low tide. In the species studied here (Uca lactea annulipes, Uca vomeris) a crab normally wanders no more than about 1 m away from its burrow and, when frightened, dashes back along a straight line to take cover. Feeding crabs tend to move sideways, without changing orientation, along paths radiating from the burrow. When they move along circumferential paths they adjust their orientation so that one side continues to point towards the burrow. The crabs do not need to see the burrow in order to stay aligned with the home vector, and they are not misled by a dummy hole close to their own burrow unless they have come to within about 10 cm of it. The home runs of crabs end within a few centimeters of a burrow that is covered with a sheet of sandpaper and then give way to search runs, centred upon a position slightly short of the burrow location. Feeding crabs can be displaced on sandpapers and their subsequent home runs end at a position where the burrow would be, had there been no displacement. Landmarks close to the burrow do not influence the home runs of displaced crabs. Crabs that are rotated on a sheet of sandpaper, counter-turn to keep their original orientation constant. The majority (75%) of femaleParastrachia japonensis (Hemiptera: Cydnidae), while caring for 1st and 2nd instar nymphs, foraged for and provisioned nests with drupes of the host plant,Schoepfia jasminodora (Olacacae), which the young then fed on. The maximum number of drupes found in a given nest was 27. Females could travel as fast as 61.4 cm/min while carrying drupes that were nearly double their weight, and were directly observed to travel as far as 10 m when encumbered with a drupe. It was found that nests which were far from the food source were provisioned with at least as many drupes as those nests that were within the drupe range. While females could not distinguish their own eggs from others, apparently they could distinguish their own nests containing their nymphs. Eggs failed to survive in the absence of a female, however, a small number of nymphs reached adulthood even in the absence of a female when drupes were provided. This report represents the first direct observation of progressive provisioning by a phytophagous hemipteran under field conditions.  相似文献

Animals balance the risk of predation against other vital needs by adjusting their spatial behavior to match spatiotemporal variation in predation risk. To map this ‘landscape of fear’, prey use evolutionary rules of thumbs that are associated with the activity and hunting efficiency of predators. In addition, prey acquire perceptual information about the presence, identity and state of potential predators and use these cues to focus their acute anti‐predatory responses. Our goal was to explore if and how prey also use such perceptual information that decays with time to update their spatiotemporal risk assessment. We placed scorpions in freshly dug burrows and recorded the spatial activity and defense behavior of their isopod prey upon encountering the burrows straight after settling the scorpions and seven days later. To corroborate our understanding, we also examined the isopods’ detailed reactions towards deserted scorpion burrows. The isopods reacted defensively to scorpion burrows during their first encounter. After seven days, proportionally more isopods approached the scorpion burrows on their way out for foraging and fewer isopods encountered it on their way back. No changes in the spatial activity were observed towards deserted burrows. In addition, on the eighth day, more isopods entered the risky area near the scorpion burrows when leaving their own burrow than on the first encounter. The results suggest that isopods used predator cues to readjust the ‘landscape of fear’. Yet, rather than avoiding the dangerous areas altogether, the isopods implemented risky inspection behavior, validating whether the danger is actual. Our findings imply that inspection behavior toward predators can be used for future planning of prey spatial activity, offsetting possible ‘information decay costs’.  相似文献

Males of the nocturnal spider Leucorchestris arenicola (Araneae: Sparassidae) wander long distances over seemingly featureless dune surfaces in the Namib Desert searching for females. The spiders live in burrows to which they return after nearly every such excursion. While the outward path of an excursion may be a meandering search, the return path is often a nearly straight line leading towards the burrow. This navigational behaviour resembles that of path integration known from other arthropods, though on a much larger scale (over tens to hundreds of meters). Theoretically, precise navigation by path integration over long distances requires an external compass in order to adjust for inevitable accumulation of navigational errors. As a first step towards identifying any nocturnal compass cues used by the male spiders, a method for detailed 3-D recordings of the spiders paths was developed. The 3-D reconstructions of the paths revealed details about the processes involved in the spiders nocturnal way of navigation. Analyses of the reconstructed paths suggest that gravity (slope of the dune surface) is an unlikely parameter used in path integration by the L. arenicola spiders.  相似文献

Flowers that are open for >12 h may be visited by both diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. I compared the effectiveness (measured as seed production and pollen movement distance) of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators of Silene alba, a species whose flowers open in evening but close by midmorning the following day. By bagging flowers either during evening hours or during daylight hours or both day and night, I compared seed production caused by diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. Flowers exposed only to nocturnal visitors (mostly sphingid and noctuid moths) produced significantly more seeds than flowers exposed only to diurnal visitors (bees, flies, and wasps). Fluorescent dye applied to anthers moved significantly further and to more stigmas at night than during the day. In both measures of pollination effectiveness, nocturnal-visiting moths are better pollinators of S. alba than are the diurnal-visiting bees, flies, and wasps. These data support the hypothesis that floral phenology is an adaptation to expose flowers to the most effective pollinators.  相似文献

Animals show daily rhythms in most bodily functions, resulting from the integration of information from an endogenous circadian clock and external stimuli. These rhythms are adaptive and are expected to be related to activity patterns, i.e., to be opposite in diurnal and nocturnal species. Melatonin is secreted during the night in all mammalian species, regardless of their activity patterns. Consequently, in diurnal species the nocturnal secretion of melatonin is concurrent with the resting phase, whereas in nocturnal species it is related to an increase in activity. In this research, we examined in three diurnal and three nocturnal rodent species whether a daily rhythm in anxiety-like behavior exists; whether it differs between nocturnal and diurnal species; and how melatonin affects anxiety-like behavior in species with different activity patterns. Anxiety-like behavior levels were analyzed using the elevated plus-maze. We found a daily rhythm in anxiety-like behavior and a significant response to daytime melatonin administration in all three nocturnal species, which showed significantly lower levels of anxiety during the dark phase, and after melatonin administration. The diurnal species showed either an inverse pattern to that of the nocturnal species in anxiety-like behavior rhythm and in response to daytime melatonin injection, or no rhythm and, accordingly, no response to melatonin.  相似文献

Most birds sleep while roosting at night. Although a widespread behavior, few investigators have studied the nocturnal roosting behavior of birds. Studies conducted to date have either focused on species that roost communally or used radio‐telemetry to locate sleeping individuals of a few focal species. Portable thermal cameras capable of detecting infrared (IR) heat signals may provide a more efficient and less invasive means of detecting nocturnal‐roosting endotherms such as birds. Our objective was to assess the efficacy of using thermal cameras to detect roosting birds in a woodland bird community in southeastern Australia. To better understand the limitations of using thermography to detect roosting birds, paired bird surveys were conducted along 44 transects from May to September 2016 using both traditional survey techniques during the day and surveys with a thermal camera at night. We detected 195 birds representing 21 species at nocturnal roosts using IR thermography, with the detection rate of birds during nocturnal surveys approximately one‐third (29.1%) that during diurnal surveys. Detection rates during nocturnal surveys declined more steeply with distance from observers than for diurnal surveys. Detection rates were significantly higher during diurnal surveys for 14 species of woodland birds, but did not differ between diurnal and nocturnal surveys for eight other species. Roost height, roost visibility, bird mass, and cluster size (i.e., two or more birds in physical contact) did not differ between species categorized as having high or low detectability during nocturnal surveys. Variability among species in nocturnal‐detectability could not be attributed to roost‐site visibility, roost height, or bird size. Positive detection biases associated with diurnal behavior, such as movement and vocalizations, and limitations of current IR technology, e.g., low resolution, likely contributed to overall lower detection rates during nocturnal surveys. However, our results suggest that infrared thermography can be an effective and useful technique for detecting roosting birds and studying roosting behavior, as well as for population monitoring under certain conditions.  相似文献

Visual, auditory, and olfactory navigation in the homing behaviour of Leach's petrel to the nesting burrow were investigated. Petrels returning to their burrows at night hovered above the thick spruce-fir canopy in the vicinity of the burrow before plummeting to the forest floor a few metres downwind of their burrows. They then walked upwind to their burrows. Birds landed closer to, and followed more circuitous routes to, their burrows in still air than in a wind. They failed to avoid obstacles in the path to burrows, often failed to locate accurately burrow entrances on first trial, and vocalized only after entering the burrow. In a Y-maze olfactorium, captive breeding petrels chose an air current coming from their own nest material in preference to one from similar materials collected on the forest floor. In the same apparatus, birds did not respond positively to air currents from their own stomach oil or preen gland oil. Petrels taken from burrows and released that same night did not return within a week if their external nares were plugged or if their olfactory nerves were transected. They did return if not operated on or if only subjected to sham operations. These results support an olfactory guidance system in burrow location and argue against visual or auditory guidance.  相似文献

For the short-tailed cricket, Anurogryllus muticus, burrow-making behavior is essential. All nymphal instars construct burrows, but in the adult stage the rate of burrowing behavior is age dependent. Increases in photophase and light intensity stimulate burrowing, and the explicit negative phototaxis is correlated with the cricket's inability to exist under dry conditions. Ingestion of substrate during burrow construction may serve to acquire additional moisture. There is no evidence of burrow recognition, and crickets can construct a burrow when needed. The natural distribution of burrows at the plot investigated on Moorea supports the notion thatA. muticus builds burrows where the preferred food plantAlysicarpus vaginalis is most abundant. By minimizing the traveling distance to food sources when foraging they can retreat to their burrow again.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae) is being increasingly planted worldwide, but questions remain regarding its pollination biology. This study examined the contribution of diurnal and nocturnal insects to the pollination of monoecious J. curcas, through its floral biology, pollination ecology, and foraging behavior of potential pollinators. Nectar production of both male and female flowers peaked in the morning, declined in the afternoon, and rapidly bottomed during the night in all of their anthesis days. The diurnal visitors to the flowers of J. curcas are bees and flies, and the nocturnal visitors are moths. Flowers received significantly more visits by diurnal insects than by nocturnal insects. Through bagging flowers during night or day or both or exclusion, we compared fruit and seed production caused by diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. Both nocturnal and diurnal visitors were successful pollinators. However, flowers exposed only to nocturnal visitors produced less fruits than those exposed only to diurnal visitors. Thus, diurnal pollinators contribute more to seed production by J. curcas at the study site.  相似文献

2006年11月中旬至2007年2月中旬,以崇明东滩堤内次生人工湿地(鱼蟹塘)为主要研究区域,对8种水鸟越冬期夜间行为进行了连续观察。结果发现,斑嘴鸭(Anas poecilorhyncha)、绿头鸭(A.platyrhynchos)、银鸥(Larus argentatus)及白鹭(Egretta garzetta)等白天在塘内栖息和取食的水鸟,黄昏时飞离并栖息于堤外海滩或堤内农田和防护林,次日清晨飞回。夜间停留在鱼蟹塘的水鸟活动差异性显著。其中,夜鹭(Nycticorax nycticorax)白天栖息于堤内防护林,夜间17:00~17:30时后飞入鱼蟹塘,分散于塘内光滩及芦苇附近活动,在约23:30时后其行为以觅食为主,达70%以上。黑水鸡(Gallinula chloropus)和骨顶鸡(Fulica atra)活动频繁,主要分布于芦苇丛和周边水域,21:30~次日2:30时其觅食行为达到高峰,数量占60%~90%,2:30~3:30时后转为以休息为主。而白天活动频繁的小(Tachybaptus ruficollis)夜间停留在塘内,主要休息于水位较深区域。结果表明,越冬水鸟夜间行为具多样性,可能与昼间活动模式有关。  相似文献

Light exposure during the early and late subjective night generally phase delays and advances circadian rhythms, respectively. However, this generality was recently questioned in a photic entrainment study in Octodon degus. Because degus can invert their activity phase preference from diurnal to nocturnal as a function of activity level, assessment of phase preference is critical for computations of phase reference [circadian time (CT) 0] toward the development of a photic phase response curve. After determining activity phase preference in a 24-h light-dark cycle (LD 12:12), degus were released in constant darkness. In this study, diurnal (n = 5) and nocturnal (n = 7) degus were randomly subjected to 1-h light pulses (30-35 lx) at many circadian phases (CT 1-6: n = 7; CT 7-12: n = 8; CT 13-18: n = 8; and CT 19-24: n = 7). The circadian phase of body temperature (Tb) onset was defined as CT 12 in nocturnal animals. In diurnal animals, CT 0 was determined as Tb onset + 1 h. Light phase delayed and advanced circadian rhythms when delivered during the early (CT 13-16) and late (CT 20-23) subjective night, respectively. No significant phase shifts were observed during the middle of the subjective day (CT 3-10). Thus, regardless of activity phase preference, photic entrainment of the circadian pacemaker in Octodon degus is similar to most other diurnal and nocturnal species, suggesting that entrainment mechanisms do not determine overt diurnal and nocturnal behavior.  相似文献

The relative importance of predation risk and food quality on spatial grazing pressure and activity patterns was tested in a central-place foraging herbivore: the European rabbit. Rabbits grazed less with increasing distance from their burrows into adjacent grassland, thereby creating a gradient of increasing vegetation height and plant biomass and decreasing plant nutrient concentration. When nitrogen concentration was experimentally increased by 150% through fertilizing and mowing, rabbits visited these plots four times more frequently than the untreated control plots. Addition of predator scent (mink pellets) did not result in different patch use by rabbits. The combined addition of fertilizer and mink pellets had the same effect as addition of fertilizer alone. However, the mink pellets changed the temporal activity pattern of rabbits as measured with infrared detectors. Rabbits were predominantly nocturnal but shifted their activities to the day when mink pellets were added, resulting in equal activities during night and day. We conclude that rabbits are sensitive to perceived predation risk, but that this does not influence their spatial grazing pressure. A selection for the highest food quality on the other hand can explain the observed natural rabbit grazing gradient. Food quality was highest close to the burrows, therefore rabbits selecting for high quality food should forage most intensely close to the burrows and only move further away for higher quality items or when the vegetation close to their burrows is depleted. Through intensive grazing close to the burrows rabbits facilitated for themselves either through stimulating fresh protein rich re-growth or the return of nutrients through faeces or both. This is in contrast with central-place foraging theory where intense feeding close to the burrow is assumed to lead to reduced food resources.  相似文献

Many of the smaller burrowing petrels are active at their colonies during the night. How they find their nesting burrows in the open terrain of an oceanic island or in the even more visually-taxing gloom under a forest canopy (Grubb 1974 and references therein) is a feat which has long intrigued naturalists (Lockley 1942). There is experimental evidence that vision is important in burrow location by the Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus (Brooke 1978, James 1986), while olfactory homing by Leach's Petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa has also been suggested by Grubb (1974).
Additionally it seems likely that a number of petrel species catch a significant fraction of their food at night (Imber 1973, Prince & Francis 1984). Many of the squid presumed to be caught then are not bioluminescent (Imber 1973, Clarke et al. 1981), so their detection presumably demands good night vision. In the context of these observations, the dearth of information on the visual abilities of petrels is remarkable.
The present study investigated the absolute visual threshold of the Common Diving Petrel Pelecanoides urinatrix. Probably because the species is small (c. 130 g) and so vulnerable to predators such as Sub-antarctic Skuas Catharacta antarctica , it is strictly nocturnal at breeding colonies (Thoresen 1969, Payne & Prince 1979). It nests in burrows that are often located under tussock grass Poa spp. Whether the birds catch their crustacean prey (Payne & Prince 1979) by day or night is not known.  相似文献

Diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns shown by different species will strongly determine the characteristics of signals as well as the sensory channels used during sexual interactions. Despite this, few studies have experimentally tested the effects of lighting and time of day on courtship characteristics in arthropods. Previous studies have shown that the wolf spider Schizocosa malitiosa can be active during the day or at night. We tested whether the period of the day affects the sexual behavior of S. malitiosa, by pairing males and females under diurnal or nocturnal conditions. We carried out mating trials in diurnal and nocturnal conditions in arenas containing female refuges. In diurnal conditions, male leg shaking behavior occurred at higher rates and consisted of greater leg raising angles relatively to nocturnal conditions. We did not find differences in mounts and mount latency between both experimental groups. In nocturnal conditions, female attacks and emergence from refuges were higher. Also, although mount occurrence did not differ between the two treatments, mounts inside the refuge were more frequent in diurnal conditions. Results suggest behavioral flexibility in male courtship and female receptivity responses relative to the time of the day.  相似文献
