Changes in the kinematic and electromyographic characteristics that occur while learning to move as fast as possible have been studied experimentally. Experimental investigation of what happens to the individual motor units (MUs) is more difficult. Access to each MU is impossible, and the recruitment and force developing properties of all individual MUs cannot be known. Thus, what is currently known about MU firing is based on experiments that have recorded relatively few MUs compared to what exists in the entire muscle. A recently developed muscle model (Raikova and Aladjov, 2002, J. Biomechanics, 35, 1123-1135) composed of MUs with different properties can be used for such investigation. The process of learning fast elbow flexion in the horizontal plane was simulated and the results were compared with experimentally measured data. Comparing the simulation results of the very first trial of a particular subject with those of the last trail (at the end of the learning process), it can be concluded that the speed of limb motion and muscle forces increase initially as a result of the more synchronous MUs activation and the increase of firing rate of active MUs. Further improvement necessitated an appreciable reduction in the motor task requirements (i.e. less muscle force and less MUs' activity) set in the computational algorithm by optimization criteria. This work investigated motor unit (MU) recruitment during transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle, using experimental and simulated data. Surface electromyogram (EMG) and torque were measured during electrically-elicited contractions at different current intensities, on eight healthy subjects.EMG detected during stimulation (M-wave) was simulated selecting the elicited MUs on the basis of: (a) the simulated current density distribution in the territory of each MU and (b) the excitation threshold characteristic of the MU. Exerted force was simulated by adding the contribution of each of the elicited MUs. The effects of different fat layer thickness (between 2 and 8 mm), different distributions of excitation thresholds (random excitation threshold, higher threshold for larger MUs or smaller MUs), and different MU distributions within the muscle (random distribution, larger MU deeper in the muscle, smaller MU deeper) on EMG variables and torque were tested.Increase of the current intensity led to a first rapid increase of experimental M-wave amplitude, followed by a plateau. Further increases of the stimulation current determined an increase of the exerted force, without relevant changes of the M-wave. Similar results were obtained in simulations.Rate of change of conduction velocity (CV) and leading coefficient of the second order polynomial interpolating the force vs. stimulation level curve were estimated as a function of increasing current amplitudes. Experimental data showed an increase of estimated CV with increasing levels of the stimulation current (for all subjects) and a positive leading coefficient of force vs. stimulation current curve (for five of eight subjects). Simulations matched the experimental results only when larger MUs were preferably located deeper in the TA muscle (in line with a histochemical study). Marginal effect of MU excitation thresholds was observed, suggesting that MUs closer to the stimulation electrode are recruited first during TES regardless of their excitability.  相似文献

Intramuscular and surface electromyogram changes during muscle fatigue   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
Twelve male subjects were tested to determine the effects of motor unit (MU) recruitment and firing frequency on the surface electromyogram (EMG) frequency power spectra during sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and 50% MVC of the biceps brachii muscle. Both the intramuscular MU spikes and surface EMG were recorded simultaneously and analyzed by means of a computer-aided intramuscular spike amplitude-frequency histogram and frequency power spectral analysis, respectively. Results indicated that both mean power frequency (MPF) and amplitude (rmsEMG) of the surface EMG fell significantly (P less than 0.001) together with a progressive reduction in MU spike amplitude and firing frequency during sustained MVC. During 50% MVC there was a significant decline in MPF (P less than 0.001), but this decline was accompanied by a significant increase in rmsEMG (P less than 0.001) and a progressive MU recruitment as evidenced by an increased number of MUs with relatively large spike amplitude. Our data suggest that the surface EMG amplitude could better represent the underlying MU activity during muscle fatigue and the frequency powers spectral shift may or may not reflect changes in MU recruitment and rate-coding patterns.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of practicing a dynamic, goal-directed movement reveals significant changes in kinematics. Modeling can provide insight into the alterations in muscle activity, associated with the kinematic adaptations, and reveal the potential motor unit (MU) firing patterns that underlie those changes. In this paper, a previously developed muscle model and software (Raikova and Aladjov, Journal of Biomechanics, 35, 2002) have been used to investigate changes in MU control, while practicing fast elbow flexion to a target in the horizontal plane. The first trial (before practice) and the last trial (after extensive practice) of two subjects have been simulated. The inputs for the simulation were the calculated external moments at the elbow joint. The external moments were countered by the action of three flexor muscles and two extensor ones. The muscles have been modeled as a mixture of MUs of different types. The software has chosen the MU firing times necessary to accomplish the movement. The muscle forces and MUs firing statistics were then calculated. Three hypotheses were tested and confirmed: (1) peak muscle forces and antagonist co-contraction increase during training; (2) there is an increase in the firing frequency and the synchronization between MUs; and (3) the recruitment of fast-twitch MUs dominates the action.  相似文献

Recently, high-density surface EMG electrode grids and multi-channel amplifiers became available for non-invasive recording of human motor units (MUs). We present a way to decompose surface EMG signals into MU firing patterns, whereby we concentrate on the importance of two-dimensional spatial differences between the MU action potentials (MUAPs). Our method is exemplified with high-density EMG data from the vastus lateralis muscle of a single subject. Bipolar and Laplacian spatial filtering was applied to the monopolar raw signals. From the single recording in this subject six different simultaneously active MUs could be distinguished using the spatial differences between MUAPs in the direction perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction. After spike-triggered averaging, 125-channel two-dimensional MUAP templates were obtained. Template-matching allowed tracking of all MU firings. The impact of spatial information was measured by using subsets of the MUAP templates, either in parallel or perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction. The use of one-dimensional spatial information perpendicular to the muscle fiber direction was superior to the use of a linear array electrode in the longitudinal direction. However, to detect the firing events of the MUs with a high accuracy, as needed for instance for estimation of firing synchrony, two-dimensional information from the complete grid electrode appears essential.  相似文献

The synchronized firings of active motor units (MUs) increase the oscillations of muscle force, observed as physiological tremor. This study aimed to investigate the effects of synchronizing the firings within three types of MUs (slow—S, fast resistant to fatigue–FR, and fast fatigable–FF) on the muscle force production using a mathematical model of the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle. The model was designed based on the actual proportion and physiological properties of MUs and motoneurons innervating the muscle. The isometric muscle and MU forces were simulated by a model predicting non-synchronized firing of a pool of 57 MUs (including 8 S, 23 FR, and 26 FF) to ascertain a maximum excitatory signal when all MUs were recruited into the contraction. The mean firing frequency of each MU depended upon the twitch contraction time, whereas the recruitment order was determined according to increasing forces (the size principle). The synchronization of firings of individual MUs was simulated using four different modes and inducing the synchronization of firings within three time windows (± 2, ± 4, and ± 6 ms) for four different combinations of MUs. The synchronization was estimated using two parameters, the correlation coefficient and the cross-interval synchronization index. The four scenarios of synchronization increased the values of the root-mean-square, range, and maximum force in correlation with the increase of the time window. Greater synchronization index values resulted in higher root-mean-square, range, and maximum of force outcomes for all MU types as well as for the whole muscle output; however, the mean spectral frequency of the forces decreased, whereas the mean force remained nearly unchanged. The range of variability and the root-mean-square of forces were higher for fast MUs than for slow MUs; meanwhile, the relative values of these parameters were highest for slow MUs, indicating their important contribution to muscle tremor, especially during weak contractions.  相似文献

To determine the non-uniform surface mechanical activity of human quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity, surface mechanomyogram (MMG), or muscle sound, and surface electromyogram (EMG) were recorded from the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis (VM) muscles of seven subjects during unilateral isometric knee extension exercise. Time- and frequency-domain analyses of MMG and of EMG fatigued by 50 repeated maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) for 3 s, with 3-s relaxation in between, were compared among the muscles. The mean MVC force fell to 49.5 (SEM 2.0)% at the end of the repeated MVC. Integrated EMG decreased in a similar manner in each muscle head, but a marked non-uniformity was found for the decline in integrated MMG (iMMG). The fall in iMMG was most prominent for RF, followed by VM and VL. Moreover, the median frequency of MMG and the relative decrease in that of EMG in RF were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than those recorded for VL and VM. These results would suggest a divergence of mechanical activity within the quadriceps muscle during fatiguing activity by repeated MVC. Accepted: 19 January 1999  相似文献

During isometric contractions of increasing strength, motor units (MUs) are recruited by the central nervous system in an orderly manner starting with the smallest, with muscle fibers that usually show the lowest conduction velocity (CV). Theory predicts that the higher the velocity of propagation of the action potential, the higher the power at high frequencies of the detected surface signal. These considerations suggest that the power spectral density of the surface detected electromyogram (EMG) signal may give indications about the MU recruitment process. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential and limitations of spectral analysis of the surface EMG signal as a technique for the investigation of muscle force control. The study is based on a simulation approach and on an experimental investigation of the properties of surface EMG signals detected from the biceps brachii during isometric linearly increasing torque contractions. Both simulation and experimental data indicate that volume conductor properties play an important role as confounding factors that may mask any relation between EMG spectral variables and estimated CV as a size principle parameter during ramp contractions. The correlation between spectral variables and CV is thus significantly lower when the MU pool is not stable than during constant-torque isometric contractions. Our results do not support the establishment of a general relationship between spectral EMG variables and torque or recruitment strategy.  相似文献

This study was performed to evaluate the relative significance of changes typical for muscle fatigue on quantitative parameters obtained from turns analysis of simulated intramuscular and surface interference electromyographic (EMG) signals. Effects of reduction of firing rate of motor units (MUs) and changes of intracellular action potential (IAP) profile along active fibers were analyzed. A new analytic function was proposed to simulate changes in IAP shape at different stages of muscle fatigue. In intramuscular EMG, both the decrease in firing rate of MUs and the changes in IAP profile led to reduction in the number of turns per second (NTs) and mean turn amplitude (MTA). The development of fatigue and especially the changes in IAP profile could explain why NTs increased up to only about 50% of maximal voluntary contraction, and remained unchanged above that level of efforts or even decreased. These effects should be especially pronounced in patients with myopathy whose IAP and muscle fatigability are expected to be abnormal. In surface EMG, the MTA increased considerably with fatigue; the sensitivity of NTs to reduction in firing rate (or number of discharges) was low. Thus, the benefits of the turns analysis of surface EMG signals should be lower not only in diagnosis of myopathy but also neuropathy.  相似文献

The alpha motoneuron pool and the surface electromyogram (EMG) of the human soleus muscle are modelled, respectively, by an alpha motoneuron pool model generating the firing patterns in the motor units of e muscle and by a muscle model using these discharge patterns to simulate the surface EMG. In the alpha motoneuron pool model, we use a population of motoneurons in which cellular properties like cell size and membrane conductance are distributed according to experimentally observed data. By calculating the contribution from each motor unit, the muscle model predicts the EMG. Wave forms of the motor unit action potentials in the surface EMG are obtained from experimental data. Using the model, we are able to give a quantitative prediction of the motoneuron pool activity and the reflex EMG output at different preactivation levels. The simulated data are consistent with experimentally obtained results in healthy humans. During static isometric muscle preactivations, the simulations show that the reflex strength is highly dependent on the intrinsic threshold properties of the alpha motoneuron pool. Capabilities of amplitude and spectral methods for information extraction from interference EMG signals were assessed through simulation and preliminary experiment. Muscle was composed of 4 types of motor units (MUs). Different hypotheses on changes in firing frequency of individual MUs, intracellular action potential (IAP) and muscle fibre propagation velocity (MFPV) during fatigue were analyzed. It was found that changes in amplitude characteristics of interference signals (root mean square, RMS, or integrated rectified value, IEMG) detected by intramuscular and surface electrodes differed. RMS and IEMG of surface detected interference signals could increase even under MU firing rate reduction and without MU synchronisation. IAP profile lengthening can affect amplitude characteristics more significantly than MU firing frequency. Thus, an increase of interference EMG amplitude is unreliable to reflect changes in the neural drive. The ratio between EMG amplitude and contraction response can hardly characterise the so-called 'neuromuscular efficiency'. The recently proposed spectral fatigue indices can be used for quantification of interference EMG signals. The indices are practically insensitive to MU firing frequency. IAP profile lengthening and decrease in MFPV enhanced the index value, while recruitment of fast fatigable MUs reduced it. Sensitivity of the indices was higher than that of indices traditionally used.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine trial-to-trial and day-to-day reproducibility of isometric force and electromyogram activity (EMG) of the knee extensor muscles in water and on dry land as well as to make comparisons between the two training conditions in muscle activity and force production. A group of 20 healthy subjects (12 women and 8 men) were tested three times over 2 weeks. A measurement session consisted of recordings of maximal and submaximal isometric knee extension force with simultaneous recording of surface EMG from the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles. To ensure identical measurement conditions the same patient elevator chair was used in both the dry and the wet environment. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CV) showed high trial-to-trial (ICC = 0.95-0.99, CV = 3.5%-11%) and day-to-day reproducibility (ICC=0.85-0.98, CV=11%-19%) for underwater and dry land measurements of force and EMG in each muscle during maximal contractions. The day-to-day reproducibility for submaximal contractions was similar. The interesting finding was that underwater EMG amplitude decreased significantly in each muscle during maximal (P < 0.01-P < 0.001) and submaximal contractions (P < 0.05-P < 0.001). However, the isometric force measurements showed similar values in both wet and dry conditions. The water had no disturbing effect on the electrodes as shown by slightly lowered interelectrode resistance values, the absence of artefacts and low noise levels of the EMG signals. It was concluded that underwater force and EMG measurements are highly reproducible. The significant decrease of underwater EMG could have electromechanical and/or neurophysiological explanations.  相似文献

Soundmyogram (SMG) and electromyogram signals were recorded simultaneously from the relatively fast medial gastrocnemius (MG) and slow soleus (SOL) during voluntary and electrically induced contractions. Using a spike-triggered averaging technique, the averaged elementary sound and corresponding MU spikes were also obtained from about 35 different MUs identified. The rms-SMG of MG increased as a function of force (P < 0.01). On the contrary, these values for SOL increased up to 60% MVC (P < 0.01), but decreased at 80% MVC. The relationship between the peak to peak amplitude of SMG and MU spike indicated significant positive correlations (r = 0.631 to approximately 0.657, P < 0.01). During electrical stimulation at 5 Hz, the SMG power spectral peak frequency (PF) was matched with stimulation frequency in both muscles. At higher stimulation frequencies, e.g., > 15 Hz, only in the MG was SMG-PF synchronized with stimulation frequency; the slow SOL did not show such synchronization. Our data suggest that the SMG frequency components might reflect active motor unit firing rates, and that the SMG amplitude depends upon mechanical properties of contraction, muscle fiber composition, and firing rate during voluntary and electrically induced contractions.  相似文献

The effects of hypothermia and hyperthermia on mammalian skeletal muscle function have previously been reported. However, their effects on the contractile properties of different motor unit (MU) types were not described. This study aimed to explore the effect of temperature on contractile properties of MUs in rat medial gastrocnemius kept at 25 °C (hypothermia), 37 °C (normothermia), and 41 °C (hyperthermia). Hypothermia prolonged the twitch time parameters of all MU types, shifting the steep part of the force-frequency curve towards lower frequencies and increasing its steepness. In addition, it reduced the rate of force development but not the twitch and tetanus forces of slow-twitch (S) MUs. Moreover, it reduced the tetanic force of fast-twitch fatigable (FF) MUs and increased the twitch force of fast-twitch fatigue-resistant (FR) MUs. In contrast, hyperthermia had opposite effects on twitch time properties and the force-frequency relationship. The twitch-to-tetanus ratio decreased for FF and FR MUs, and the steep part of the force-frequency curve shifted towards higher frequencies and decreased in steepness. Our findings indicate that FF MUs are the most sensitive and S MUs are the least sensitive to temperature. Furthermore, force control processes involving changes in motoneuronal firing frequency were radically modified for fast MUs, especially FF MUs.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe and examine the variations in recruitment patterns of motor units (MUs) in biceps brachii (BB) through a range of joint motion during dynamic eccentric and concentric contractions. Twelve healthy participants (6 females, 6 males, age = 30 ± 8.5 years) performed concentric and eccentric contractions with constant external loading at different levels. Surface electromyography (EMG) and mechanomyography (MMG) were recorded from BB. The EMGs and MMGs were decomposed into their intensities in time–frequency space using a wavelet technique. The EMG and MMG spectra were then compared using principal component analysis. Variations in total intensity, first principal component (PCI), and the angle θ formed by first component (PCI) and second component (PCII) loading scores were explained in terms of MU recruitment patterns and elbow angles. Elbow angle had a significant effect on dynamic concentric and eccentric contractions. The EMG total intensity was greater for concentric than for eccentric contractions in the present study. MMG total intensity, however, was lower during concentric than during eccentric contractions. In addition, there was no significant difference in θ between concentric and eccentric contractions for both EMG and MMG. Selective recruitment of fast MUs from BB muscle during eccentric muscle contractions was not found in the present study.  相似文献

Mechanical oscillation (vibration) is an osteogenic stimulus for bone in animal models and may hold promise as an anti-osteoporosis measure in humans with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the level of reflex induced muscle contractions associated with various loads (g force) during limb segment oscillation is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain gravitational loads (g forces) at a fixed oscillation frequency (30 Hz) increases muscle reflex activity in individuals with and without SCI. Nine healthy subjects and two individuals with SCI sat with their hip and knee joints at 90° and the foot secured on an oscillation platform. Vertical mechanical oscillations were introduced at 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 3 and 5g force for 20 s at 30 Hz. Non-SCI subjects received the oscillation with and without a 5% MVC background contraction. Peak soleus and tibialis anterior (TA) EMG were normalized to M-max. Soleus and TA EMG were <2.5% of M-max in both SCI and non-SCI subjects. The greatest EMG occurred at the highest acceleration (5g). Low magnitude mechanical oscillation, shown to enhance bone anabolism in animal models, did not elicit high levels of reflex muscle activity in individuals with and without SCI. These findings support the g force modulated background muscle activity during fixed frequency vibration. The magnitude of muscle activity was low and likely does not influence the load during fixed frequency oscillation of the tibia.  相似文献

Electromyography is often used to infer the pattern of productionof force by skeletal muscles. The interpretation of muscle functionfrom the electromyogram (EMG) is challenged by the fact thatfactors such as type of muscle fiber, muscle length, and musclevelocity can all influence the relationship between electricaland mechanical activity of a muscle. Simultaneous measurementsof EMG, muscle force, and fascicle length in hindlimb musclesof wild turkeys allow us to probe the quantitative link betweenforce and EMG. We examined two features of the force–EMGrelationship. First, we measured the relaxation electromechanicaldelay (r-EMD) as the time from the end of the EMG signal totime of the end of force. This delay varied with locomotor speedin the lateral gastrocnemius (LG); it was longer at slow walkingspeeds than for running. This variation in r-EMD was not explainedby differences in muscle length trajectory, as the magnitudeof r-EMD was not correlated with the velocity of shorteningof the muscle during relaxation. We speculate that the longerrelaxation times at slow walking speeds compared with runningmay reflect the longer time course of relaxation in slower musclesfibers. We also examined the relationship between magnitudeof force and EMG across a range of walking and running speeds.We analyzed the force–EMG relationship during the swingphase separately from the force–EMG relationship duringstance phase. During stance, force amplitude (average force)was linearly related to mean EMG amplitude (average EMG). Forcesduring swing phase were lower than predicted from the stancephase force–EMG relationship. The different force–EMGrelationships during the stance and swing phases may reflectthe contribution of passive structures to the development offorce, or a nonlinear force–EMG relationship at low levelsof muscle activity. Together the results suggest that any inferenceof force from EMG must be done cautiously when a broad rangeof activities is considered.  相似文献

When using functional electrical stimulation (FES), correct adjustment of stimulation parameters, and monitoring of the stimulated muscle is mandatory if tissue damage is to be avoided. Although several FES systems are already in regular use, a method for direct muscle monitoring is still lacking. This paper investigates the suitability of the electromyogram (EMG) for such a purpose. In six sheep, the right latissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) and the associated thoracodorsal nerve were exposed. Stimulation was effected via electrodes placed on the nerve. Three electrodes were placed in the LDM for EMG recording, and the tendon was connected to a force transducer for isometric force measurement. Stimulation was applied for one second (burst), followed by a three-second pause. The stimulation current was increased in 0.2 mA steps, starting at 0 mA and ending at 4 mA. Throughout the investigation, the EMG signal was monitored with an oscilloscope. In addition, the EMG signal and the force transducer signal were recorded for subsequent analysis. An analysis of the data of all six sheep revealed an almost linear relationship between muscle force and m-wave amplitude (magnitude of r = 0.95, p < 0.001). M-wave monitoring during EMG recording with three intramuscular electrodes is a reliable method of monitoring FES-induced muscle activity, but the absolute force cannot be measured.  相似文献

To evaluate the time-course of stretching-induced changes in mechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit (MTU), 11 participants (age 22 ± 1 yr; body mass 77 ± 5 kg; stature 1.78 ± 0.05 m; mean ± SD) underwent tetanic electrical stimulations of the medial gastrocnemius muscle before and after (up to 2 h) stretching administration. During contractions, surface electromyogram (EMG), mechanomyogram (MMG) and force were recorded simultaneously. From MMG, peak-to-peak (p–p) and root mean square (RMS) were calculated during the on-phase and plateau phase of tetanic contraction, respectively. After stretching: (i) no differences were found in EMG parameters; (ii) MMG p–p and slope decreased (−16% and −10%, respectively; P < 0.05) and remained depressed for the entire recovery period; (iii) MMG RMS increased (+20%; P < 0.05), returning to pre-stretching values within 15 min; and (iv) peak force (pF), with its first (dF/dt) and second (d2F/dt2) derivative, decreased significantly by 32%, 35% and 54%, respectively, and remained depressed for the entire recovery period. The lack of MMG p–p and pF recovery could be ascribable to a reduced muscle force generating capacity due to persisting changes in viscoelastic characteristics of series elastic components. The early return of MMG RMS to pre-stretching values suggests that changes in viscoelastic parallel components recovered after few minutes.  相似文献

The Cinderella hypothesis postulates the continuous activity of specific motor units (MUs) during low-level muscle contraction. The MUs may become metabolically overloaded, with the subject developing muscle pain and strain. The hypothesis requires MUs that are active for a time long enough to actually damage muscle fibers. The aim of this study was to determine if there are continuously active MUs in the right trapezius muscle during normal computer work using a computer mouse. Fourteen healthy subjects executed an interactive computer-learning program (ErgoLight) for 30 min. Six-channel intramuscular EMG and two-channel surface EMG signals were recorded from two positions of the trapezius muscle. Decomposition was achieved with automated, multi-channel, long-term decomposition software (EMG-LODEC). In two out of the 14 subjects, three MUs were continuously active throughout the 30 min. Although the majority of the MUs were active during only part of the experimental session, an ordered on-off behavior (e.g. substitution) pattern was not observed. As long-lasting activity was verified in some subjects, the results support the Cinderella hypothesis. However, it cannot be concluded here how long the MUs could stay active. If continuous activity overloads low threshold MUs, the potential exists for selective fibre injuries in low threshold MUs of the trapezius muscle in subjects exposed to long-term computer work.  相似文献
