As part of a habitat restoration experiment wood substrates (red gum) were introduced to two lowland streams of SE Australia in which habitat has been severely degraded by deposition of sand eroded from higher in the catchment. We monitored net primary production (NPP) and community respiration (CR), nutrient concentrations and the succession of algae and invertebrates (abundance and species richness), sampling at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks. Colonisation by algae was rapid, and there were distinct changes in the assemblages over the first 4 weeks. Thereafter, changes were much less marked. There were also differences in nutrient concentrations and some measures of algal abundance between the two creeks. As with the algae, invertebrates colonised these substrates extremely rapidly, peaking in abundance and richness in week 8. Invertebrate abundances closely tracked changes in the abundance of algae. By the end of the study both algal and invertebrate communities were in apparent decline, with sharp decreases in invertebrate and algal abundance and invertebrate species richness. Rates of GPP also declined toward the end of the experiment, and this coincided with the detachment of large mats of filamentous algae and the recession of flows over the summer months. However, in both streams the added timber quickly created habitat with high levels of primary production in an otherwise strongly heterotrophic stream system. These hotspots of autotrophic production were quickly colonised by high numbers of macroinvertebrates indicating timber addition may provide an effective means of augmenting habitat for algae and invertebrates in sanded streams.

We collected quantitative data on macrophyte abundance and water quality in 319 mostly shallow, polymictic, Florida lakes to look for relationships between trophic state indicators and the biomasses of plankton algae, periphyton, and macrophytes. The lakes ranged from oligotrophic to hypereutrophic with total algal chlorophylls ranging from 1 to 241 mg m–3. There were strong positive correlations between planktonic chlorophylls and total phosphorus and total nitrogen, but there were weak inverse relationships between the densities of periphyton and the trophic state indicators total phosphorus, total nitrogen and algal chlorophyll and a positive relationship with Secchi depth. There was no predictable relationship between the abundance of emergent, floating-leaved, and submersed aquatic vegetation and the trophic state indicators. It was only at the highest levels of nutrient concentrations that submersed macrophytes were predictably absent and the lakes were algal dominated. Below these levels, macrophyte abundance could be high or low. The phosphorus–chlorophyll and phosphorus–Secchi depth relationships were not influenced by the amounts of aquatic vegetation present indicating that the role of macrophytes in clearing lakes may be primarily to reduce nutrient concentrations for a given level of loading. Rather than nutrient concentrations controlling macrophyte abundance, it seems that macrophytes acted to modify nutrient concentrations.

The distribution of submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes has been found to be skewed towards sites with intermediate exposure to waves. Low submerged macrophyte biomass at exposed sites has been explained by, for instance, physical damage from waves. The aim of this study was to investigate if lower biomass at sheltered sites compared to sites with intermediate exposure to waves can be caused by competition from epiphyton.Investigations were performed in eutrophic lakes in southern Sweden. Samples of submerged macrophytes and epiphytic algae on the macrophytes were taken along a wave exposure gradient. The amount of epiphyton (AFDW) per macrophyte biomass decreased with increased exposure. Biomass of submerged macrophytes, on the other hand, increased with increased exposure until a relatively abrupt disappearance of submerged vegetation occurred at high exposures. Production of epiphytic algae was monitored on artificial substrates from June to September at a sheltered and an exposed site in three lakes. It was higher at sheltered sites compared with exposed sites. We suggest that epiphytic algae may be an important factor in limiting the distribution of submerged macrophytes at sheltered sites in eutrophic lakes.

1. Nutrient and fish manipulations in mesocosms were carried out on food‐web interactions in a Mediterranean shallow lake in south‐east Spain. Nutrients controlled biomass of phytoplankton and periphyton, while zooplankton, regulated by planktivorous fish, influenced the relative percentages of the dominant phytoplankton species. 2. Phytoplankton species diversity decreased with increasing nutrient concentration and planktivorous fish density. Cyanobacteria grew well in both turbid and clear‐water states. 3. Planktivorous fish increased concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Larger zooplankters (mostly Ceriodaphnia and copepods) were significantly reduced when fish were present, whereas rotifers increased, after fish removal of cyclopoid predators and other filter feeders (cladocerans, nauplii). The greatest biomass and diversity of zooplankton was found at intermediate nutrient levels, in mesocosms without fish and in the presence of macrophytes. 4. Water level decrease improved underwater light conditions and favoured macrophyte persistence. Submerged macrophytes (Chara spp.) outcompeted algae up to an experimental nutrient loading equivalent to added concentrations of 0.06 mg L?1 PO4‐P and 0.6 mg L?1 NO3‐N, above which an exponential increase in periphyton biomass and algal turbidity caused characean biomass to decline. 5. Declining water levels during summer favoured plant‐associated rotifer species and chroococcal cyanobacteria. High densities of chroococcal cyanobacteria were related to intermediate nutrient enrichment and the presence of small zooplankton taxa, while filamentous cyanobacteria were relatively more abundant in fishless mesocosms, in which Crustacea were more abundant, and favoured by dim underwater light. 6. Benthic macroinvertebrates increased significantly at intermediate nutrient levels but there was no relationship with planktivorous fish density. 7. The thresholds of nutrient loading and in‐lake P required to avoid a turbid state and maintain submerged macrophytes were lower than those reported from temperate shallow lakes. Mediterranean shallow lakes may remain turbid with little control of zooplankton on algal biomass, as observed in tropical and subtropical lakes. Nutrient loading control and macrophyte conservation appear to be especially important in these systems to maintain high water quality.

Patchy occurrences of benthic drift algae (i.e. loose lying macroalgal mats) may increase habitat complexity on normally bare soft bottoms, but at the same time, extensive amounts of drifting algal mats are known to stress the benthic fauna. This paper presents results of the first detailed study of the fauna associated with drift algal mats in the northern Baltic Sea. In order to assess the importance of drifting algae as an alternative habitat for benthic fauna, benthic drift algal mats were sampled on shallow (2-9 m) sandy soft bottoms in the outer archipelago of the ?land Islands (Finland). Species composition, abundance and biomass of the macrofauna associated with algal mats were recorded. The results show that drifting algae at times can harbour very high abundances of invertebrates (up to 1116 individuals/g algal dryweight), surpassing invertebrate densities recorded in seagrass communities. The algal fauna varied between sites and over time, and factors such as ambient benthic fauna, exposure to wind-wave disturbance, depth, and algal coverage and condition influenced the invertebrate community composition of the algal mats. Abundance increased while individual biomass of the animals decreased over time (summer season; July-October). A series of laboratory experiments were conducted in order to test the ability of a few important benthic species to move up into, and survive in a drifting algal mat. Macoma balthica, Hydrobia spp., Nereis diversicolor and Bathyporeia pilosa were used in the experiments, and significant differences in their survival and mobility within drifting algae were recorded. This study shows that benthic species differ significantly in their ability to utilise the algal mats, with mainly opportunistic and mobile taxa such as Hydrobia spp., Chironomidae and Ostracoda benefiting from the algae, whereas infaunal species such as M. balthica and B. pilosa are negatively affected. The occurrence of eutrophication induced drifting macroalgal mats has increased significantly during the last decade in the northern Baltic Sea. Hence, the importance of drifting algae as a stress factor and as an alternative habitat for benthic fauna increases.

Algal biomass, C:N:P (carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus) ratios and APA (biomass specific alkaline phosphatase activity) were measured in benthic algal communities on living substrates (mussels and macrophytes) and on rocks and stones (epilithon) in three lakes of different trophy. Benthic algal communities on living substrates had lower C:N:P ratios than epilithon, whereas algal biomass was highest on rocks and stones. Benthic algal biomass increased with the trophic level of a lake despite an increase of C:N:P ratios in the benthic community. The differences in C:N:P ratios and algal biomass between lakes of different trophy were higher on inert substrates than on macrophytes and mussels, probably because algae on living substrates could compensate a poor nutrient supply from lake water with substrate nutrients. However, the substrate was not, as expected, the most important nutrient supply in the oligotrophic lake, but in the eutrophic lake. Therefore, differences between inert and living substrates in a single lake were highest in the eutrophic lake. APA values of the oligotrophic lake were very high especially for benthic algae on stones, indicating an ability of the community to take up nutrients from organic sources. In conclusion, living substrates were an important nutrient source for benthic algae and the importance of this nutrient supply did not decrease with increasing lake trophy.

Usefulness of three types of artificial substrata (glass, wood and plastic) was tested when studying settlement patterns of periphyton in lakes of different trophic status. Strictly eu-, meso- and oligotrophic lakes in central Sweden were chosen as objects of the study. Glass slides, glass tubes, pieces of plastic (PVC) and pieces of wood of similar dimensions were placed for 9 weeks in July-August vertically 3 cm above bottom at a total depth of ca. 30 cm. Substrata were located at well-illuminated places without any other submerged objects (like macrophytes and stones), which could potentially affect colonisation patterns by algae. Periphyton communities, which colonised both the glass tubes and the pieces of wood tested, were specific enough to enable a clear classification of the lakes studied in eu-, meso- and oligotrophic. Glass tubes turned out to be the most favourable substratum when investigating settlement patterns of periphyton in this study. Although also colonised by periphytic species, wood did not support the same diversity and abundance of species as glass did. No algae were detected on the plastics studied. The plastics were covered entirely by a slime layer of bacteria. It is discussed if the nature of plastics could have some inhibitory effects on algal growth or the slime layer itself may have prevented settlement of algal spores.

To analyze density-mediated indirect effects through trophic cascades caused by Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis on the algal biomass and growth of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, (freshwater fish belonging to Salmoniformes), I introduced zero, five, ten, and 20 dace with and without ayu into experimental pools. Ayu fed predominantly on benthic algae, whereas dace fed on both invertebrates and algae. The percentage of algae in the food content of dace was correlated with the number of dace in a pool. In the experiment lasting 8 days, trophic cascades on algae were not clear. In contrast, when the experimental duration was extended to 20 days, the number of gastropods and ephemeropteran nymphs was negatively correlated with the number of dace, consequently increasing the algal biomass and ayu growth through trophic cascades. Compared with pools with five dace, the presence of ten and 20 dace had similar gross effects on the number of algivorous invertebrates and algal biomass and greater gross effects on the ayu growth. The significant increase in ayu growth in pools with ten and 20 dace strongly suggests that small positive effects on algal growth by dace accumulated and extended to ayu during a 20-day experimental period. These results indicate the importance of analyzing interactions between the density and behavior of the top predator and the experimental duration on the intensity of trophic cascades.

On 15 November 2017 the mouth of the West Kleinemonde Estuary breached following heavy catchment rains and increased river flow. The water level in the estuary following mouth opening decreased by 1.65 m within 24 h, resulting in an almost complete draining of the littoral zone where large beds of the aquatic macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa and mats of the associated filamentous algae were present. As the water depth within the plant beds decreased, the macrophytes, together with the algal filaments, created an increasingly dense mat, trapping fish that were resident, foraging or passing through the littoral zone. By 16 November 2017 large numbers of fishes belonging to at least 20 species were trapped in pools and depressions within the littoral, as well as within the R. cirrhosa beds and filamentous algal mats in the lower reaches of this system. Other affected taxa included crustaceans, especially isopods, and large numbers of small bivalves attached to macrophyte vegetation. Beneficiaries of the fish kill, in terms of unexpected food availability, included a variety of piscivorous bird species and the Cape clawless otter Aonyx capensis. This is the first documented account of a diverse species fish kill associated with estuary mouth breaching.

Climate warming may lead to changes in the trophic structure and diversity of shallow lakes as a combined effect of increased temperature and salinity and likely increased strength of trophic interactions. We investigated the potential effects of temperature, salinity and fish on the plant-associated macroinvertebrate community by introducing artificial plants in eight comparable shallow brackish lakes located in two climatic regions of contrasting temperature: cold-temperate and Mediterranean. In both regions, lakes covered a salinity gradient from freshwater to oligohaline waters. We undertook day and night-time sampling of macroinvertebrates associated with the artificial plants and fish and free-swimming macroinvertebrate predators within artificial plants and in pelagic areas. Our results showed marked differences in the trophic structure between cold and warm shallow lakes. Plant-associated macroinvertebrates and free-swimming macroinvertebrate predators were more abundant and the communities richer in species in the cold compared to the warm climate, most probably as a result of differences in fish predation pressure. Submerged plants in warm brackish lakes did not seem to counteract the effect of fish predation on macroinvertebrates to the same extent as in temperate freshwater lakes, since small fish were abundant and tended to aggregate within the macrophytes. The richness and abundance of most plant-associated macroinvertebrate taxa decreased with salinity. Despite the lower densities of plant-associated macroinvertebrates in the Mediterranean lakes, periphyton biomass was lower than in cold temperate systems, a fact that was mainly attributed to grazing and disturbance by fish. Our results suggest that, if the current process of warming entails higher chances of shallow lakes becoming warmer and more saline, climatic change may result in a decrease in macroinvertebrate species richness and abundance in shallow lakes.

In aquatic environments around the globe, rooted macrophytes have been replaced by filamentous macroalgae. The consequences of such shifts in vegetative habitat for fauna are poorly understood. Given differences in morphology and life history characteristics of rooted macrophytes and filamentous macroalgae, we hypothesized that these habitat types were not functionally redundant for small-bodied fishes and macroinvertebrates. We examined this hypothesis in spring-fed Florida rivers characterized by decreases in native rooted macrophytes and concomitant increases in filamentous macroalgae. Although faunal densities were generally greater in filamentous macroalgae than in rooted macrophytes, differences in the community assemblage structure suggest that the two types of vegetative habitat do not function interchangeably. Accordingly, continued replacement of rooted macrophytes with filamentous macroalgae is expected to affect the small fish and macroinvertebrate community, as well as higher trophic levels that depend on it.

1. To examine the strength and role of indirect effects through trophic cascades by omnivorous fish on algal biomass in streams, we introduced one of four fish species (ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, pike gudgeon Pseudogobio esocinus esocinus, Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis and pale chub Zacco platypus) in experimental pools. We also investigated the indirect effects of gudgeon, dace and chub on the growth of ayu. 2. We chose the four fish species across a continuum of omnivory. Ayu fed mainly on benthic algae, and gudgeon predominantly on invertebrates. Dace and chub fed on both algae and invertebrates, but dace preyed on invertebrates more than chub. 3. The presence of gudgeon, dace and chub reduced the number of algal-feeding invertebrates and increased the algal biomass through trophic cascades. Consequently, ayu growth rate over the experimental period in pools with one of the three fish species was 25.9-44.1 times greater than the growth rate in pools with only ayu. 4. The positive indirect effect on ayu growth was large for gudgeon and dace and small for chub, whereas the addition of ayu reduced ayu growth considerably due to intraspecific competition. 5. The relative intensity of indirect effects on ayu growth through trophic cascades was predictable from the food overlap between ayu and the other fishes. However, the similar strength of indirect effects by gudgeon and dace that fed differently on algae and invertebrates suggests that feeding behaviour, prey preference and trait-mediated indirect interactions were also important in the prediction.

Change in the abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates and the stable isotope composition (C, N) of benthic invertebrates and zooplankton in Lake Vaeng, Denmark, was investigated over an 18-year period following biomanipulation (removal of cyprinids). During the first nine years after biomanipulation, the lake was clear and submerged macrophytes were abundant; after this period, a shift occurred to low plant abundance and high turbidity. Two years after the biomanipulation, total density of benthic macroinvertebrates reached a maximum of 17042 (±2335 SE) individuals m−2 and the density was overall higher when the lake was in a clear state. Redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested macrophyte abundance and total nitrogen (TN) concentration were the dominant structuring forces on the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage. Stable isotope analysis revealed that δ13C of macroinvertebrates and zooplankton was markedly higher in years with high submerged macrophyte abundance than in years without macrophytes, most likely reflecting elevated δ13C of phytoplankton and periphyton mediated by a macrophyte-induced lowering of lake water CO2 concentrations. We conclude that the strong relationship between macrophyte coverage and δ13C of macroinvertebrates and cladocerans may be useful in paleoecological studies of past changes in the dynamics of shallow lakes, as change in macrophyte abundance may be tracked by the δ13C of invertebrate remains in the sediment.

Most relatively large (> 250 ha) and shallow (< 2 m), Dutch lakes originate from large-scale peat mining. Originally, their water tables were regulated by natural processes such as evapotransporation, precipitation, drainage and seepage (up and downwards). These lakes used to be oligo to mesotrophic, and the phytoplankton consisted mainly of diatoms and green algae. However, 30 years ago filamentous cyanobacteria were also present. Owing to the intensification of agriculture in the surroundings of the lakes, their management developed more and more towards a man-made reservoir function. This management resulted in inflow of eutrophic water from the agricultural areas in winter. In summer the lakes were increasingly used as a water supply. This supply is compensated by water imported mainly from the River Rhine. The impacts of this reservoir function on the limnology of the Dutch fen lakes are discussed with the Tjeukemeer, the Loosdrechtse Plassen and the Reeuwijkse Plassen as examples. All these lakes have become typical eutrophic waters with high turbidity, dominance of filamentous cyanobacteria and bream and complete loss of submerged macrophytes. Finally, methods and results of manipulation procedures to restore these waters are discussed.

The invertebrate community living in algal mats on intertidal boulders was studied for 2 yr. The diversity and abundance of the animals increased between the early and middle stages of algal succession, then remained similar into the later stage. Three possible mechanisms producing this pattern were investigated experimentally by manipulating natural algal mats and plastic algal mimics in the field and laboratory and evaluating the community of colonizing invertebrates. The first, the “ecological time” hypothesis, suggests that there are more species and individuals in later stages because they accumulate slowly with time; this hypothesis was tested experimentally and rejected. A second, “algal toxicity” hypothesis suggests that species richness and abundance are lower in earlier successional stages because the early colonizing green algae are more toxic to animals than are the later red algae. This hypothesis was also tested experimentally and rejected. The third, “habitat complexity” hypothesis suggests that increases in complexity of physical aspects of algal structure (biomass, surface area) cause increases in invertebrate richness and abundance. The fact that this result was found in both living algae and plastic mimics indicates that biological aspects of algal structure apparently have only minor importance. Algal biomass and surface area increase from early to middle successional stages; middle and late successional stages are similar. In general, increases in these physical aspects of algal structure produce concomitant increases in the abundance and diversity of the associated animal community. With higher biomass and surface area, increased numbers of individuals accumulate in algal mats. Because a larger sample of the available pool of individuals is therefore collected, more species are found in a given area of algal mat when the structure is more complex. The successional patterns of increase in species richness of this invertebrate community seem to result from this sampling phenomenon, rather than from increases in numbers of resources (i.e., “niches”).

A number of mechanisms result in a feedback between water clarity and macrophytes and, consequently, the occurrence of alternative stable states in shallow lakes. We hypothesize that bottom-up mechanisms and interactions within the benthic food web are more important in a charophyte-dominated clear-water state, while top-down mechanism and interactions in the planktonic food web prevail at angiosperm dominance. Charophytes, which dominate at lower nutrient concentrations and develop higher densities than most angiosperms, can have a higher influence on sedimentation, resuspension, and water column nutrients. During dominance of dense submerged vegetation like charophytes, zooplankton can be hampered by low food quality and quantity and by high predation pressure from juvenile fish, which in turn are favoured by the high refuge potential of this vegetation. Grazing pressure from zooplankton on phytoplankton can therefore be low in charophytes, but the main feedback in angiosperm-dominated ecosystems. Charophytes offer a higher surface than most angiosperms to periphyton, which favors benthic invertebrates. These support macrophytes by grazing periphyton and constitute a central link in a trophic cascade from fish to periphyton and macrophytes. To test these hypotheses, more experiments and field measurements comparing the effect of charophytes and angiosperms on water clarity are needed.

Diel horizontal migration (DHM), where zooplankton moves towards macrophytes during daytime to avoid planktivorous fish, has been reported as a common migration pattern of zooplankton in shallow temperate freshwater lakes. However, in shallow eutrophic brackish lakes, macrophytes seem not to have the same refuge effect, as these lakes may remain turbid even at relatively high macrophyte abundances. To investigate the extent to which macrophytes serve as a refuge for zooplankton at different salinities, we introduced artificial plants mimicking submerged macrophytes in the littoral zone of four shallow lakes, with salinities ranging from almost freshwater (0.3) to oligohaline waters (3.8). Furthermore, we examined the effects of different salinities on the community structure. Diel samples of zooplankton were taken from artificial plants, from areas where macrophytes had been removed (intermediate areas) and, in two of the lakes, also in open water. Fish and macroinvertebrates were sampled amongst the artificial plants and in intermediate areas to investigate their influence on zooplankton migration. Our results indicated that diel vertical migration (DVM) was the most frequent migration pattern of zooplankton groups, suggesting that submerged macrophytes were a poor refuge against predation at all salinities under study. Presumably, this pattern was the result of the relatively high densities of small planktivorous fish and macroinvertebrate predators within the submerged plants. In addition, we found major differences in the composition of zooplankton, fish and macroinvertebrate communities at the different salinities and species richness and diversity of zooplankton decreased with increasing salinity. At low salinities both planktonic/free-swimming and benthic/plant-associated cladocerans occurred, whilst only benthic ones occurred at the highest salinity. The low zooplankton biomass and overall smaller-bodied zooplankton specimens may result in a lower grazing capacity on phytoplankton, and enhance the turbid state in nutrient rich shallow brackish lakes.
