Pollen grains of 107 species of 61 genera of the Gardeniinae were investigated by scanning electron and light microscopy. The subtribe is europalynous and grains occur either as monads, tetrads or massulae. Grains are porate, colporate or rarely pororate. The majority of the genera has 3-zonoaperturate pollen grains. However, deviating numbers of apertures occur in Byrsophyllum (4–8) and Pseudomantalania (4–5). Pantoporate pollen occurs in Randia . The average equatorial size (E) of monads varies between 13 μm in Anomanthodiu to 59 μm in Posoqueria . The tetrads vary from 37 μm in Casasia to 61 μm in Calochone and Euclinia . The exine is usually reticulate, but also foveolate, rugulate, perforate and psilate exine occurs in the subtribe. The thickness of the exine is only 0.3 μm in tetrad grains of Randia armata and in the pantoporate monad grains of R. ruiziana , whereas the thickest exine occurs in Posoqueria (2.8 pm) and Euclinia (2.9 μm). Tectal excrescenses are generally absent. However, three genera with pollen in tetrads, namely Euclinia, Gardenia and Oligoco-don , show this feature. Contrary to the subtribe most genera are fairly stenopalynous, but in the neotropical genera Alibertia and Randia several different types of pollen are encountered.  相似文献

Pollen grains of ten species of Campuloclinium (Eupatorieae, Asteraceae) are described and illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The species included in this study are C. burchelli, C. campuloclinioides, C. chlorolepis, C. hirsutum, C. irwinii, C. macrocephalum, C. megacephalum, C. parvulum, C. purpurascens and C. riedelli. Pollen grains of Campuloclinium are typically radially symmetric, echinate, tectate, oblate-spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal (P/E ratio: 0.94–1.10). Pollen is mostly triaperturate, but tetraaperturate or biaperturate pollen also occurs in some species. The pollen diameter was highly variable ranging from 10.54 µm to 36.18 μm. The significance of the variation in type and size of pollen is discussed in relation to diverse meiotic abnormalities and possible reproductive apomictic processes within the polyploid species.  相似文献

Pollen grains of 20 taxa from Gochnatia , Ianthopappus , and Richterago (Compositae - Mutisieae) have been studied. Pollen morphological characters and intergeneric differences are described. Pollen of grains of Richterago and Ianthopappus are relatively larger with thickened exine in the mesocolpia and possess coarse, supratectal spinuliferous processes the height of which is less than their diameter at the base. In Gochnatia , the pollen is medium-sized, the exine is not thickened in the mesocolpia and has minute supratectal spinuliferous processes the height of which is equal or slightly more than 3 w m. Ianthopappus corymbosus is the only species in which the infratectum is thicker than the tectum. With reference to the pollen size and the exine thickness this species appears phylogenetically closer to Richterago than to Gochnatia .  相似文献

Pollen grains of 15 taxa of the genus Chelonopsis (14 spp. and 1 variety) from China and Japan and 6 species of the closely related genera Bostrychanthera (1 species) and Gomphostemma (5 species) were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Of these, the pollen morphology of 18 taxa was studied for the first time. Pollen grains were found to be tricolpate with polar lengths of 20.8–30.0 μm and equatorial widths of 17.5–27.3 μm. The basic shape of the pollen in most taxa is subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, but spheroidal, subprolate-spheroidal, oblate-spheroidal, and prolate-subprolate grains are also found in some species. The surface is generally reticulate or suprareticulate in Chelonopsis and granulate in Bostrychanthera. In comparison with those of Chelonopsis and Bostrychanthera, the pollen grain surfaces of Gomphostemma are more diverse. In Chelonopsis, pollen is taxonomically useful at the sectional level, and some grains provide enough characters for species delimitation. The potential pollination ecology of cellular hairs on the anthers of Chelonopsis and Bostrychanthera is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

Pollen morphology and exine structure of the seven Hymenocallis Salisb. species present in Venezuela were investigated using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. Pollen grains of all species are monosulcate, heteropolar, with bilateral symmetry, oblate to peroblate, heterobrochate, semitectate-columellate, possess unequal tectal surfaces, and are clavate or baculate when viewed with TEM. They present two equatorial apexes. When observed under SEM their surfaces appear as granulate; however, it is evident from TEM that they are in fact constituted by pila. All the species possess very large pollen (ranging from 64 to 85 μm and from 125 to 155 μm for polar and equatorial axes, respectively), and no relationship was evident between pollen size and chromosome number. All the taxa are also very similar in relation to their pollen outline, ornamentation and internal structure, thus indicating that the genus is accurately delimited from the palynological point of view and that discrete characteristics can only be used in some cases to delimit individual species.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of four Matricaria species and 28 Tripleurospermum species was investigated with light microscopies (LM) and scanning electron microscopies (SEM). Pollen slides were prepared using Wodehouse technique. Measurements were based on 20 or more pollen grains per specimen. For SEM studies, dried pollen grains were transferred on aluminum stubs and coated with gold for 4 min in a sputter-coater. The pollen grains of Matricaria and Tripleurospermum are radially symmetric and isopolar. The pollen grains of the Matricaria are oblate-spheroidal with the polar axes 16.6–31.2 μm and the equatorial axes 18.7–23.9 μm. Tripleurospermum is oblate-spheroidal, suboblate and prolate-spheroidal with the polar axes 15.6–32.2 μm and the equatorial axes 17.7-38.5 μm. The pollen grains of Tripleurospermum are operculate and tricolporate. Matricaria is operculate and usually tricolporate or rarely syncolporate, tricolpate and tetracolporate. The pollen grain of both taxa shows echinate ornamentation. The spines are commonly conical with a broadened base and a tapered apical portion. The spine length varies between 1.8–4 μm in Tripleurospermum and 2.3–3.3 μm in Matricaria. The width of spines varies between 2.8–4.6 μm in Tripleurospermum and 2.4–3.6 μm in Matricaria. Inter-spinal area shows granulate–perforate, reticulate–perforate, rugulate–perforate ornamentations and the tectum surrounding the spine base is micro perforate. Overall exine thickness ranges from 2.8 to 4.8 μm in Tripleurospermum, 3.6 to 5.2 μm in Matricaria. Intine is thicker under pores in Tripleurospermum (0.3–0.62 μm) than in Matricaria (0.6–0.8 μm). Inter-spinal ornamentations, pollen shape and the numbers of perforations at the spin base have been observed as important morphological characters.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of seven Alyssum L. taxa growing on serpentine soils in different places in the European Mediterranean macrobioclimate territory were studied, described and compared. Cluster analysis was performed to show similarity between species and their populations. The shape of the pollen grains varies among the species and among the grains within the same anther. The pollen grains are 3-colpate, prolate, with long and narrow colpi reaching the poles. The ornamentation of the exine varies from micro-reticulate to reticulate between the species. Pollen sterility/fertility was also calculated. The highest percentage of sterile pollen (73.76%) was calculated for Alyssum murale subsp. murale and the lowest (9.54%) for A. bertolonii subsp. bertolonii. All species are representatives of sect. Odontarrhena (C.A. Meyer) Koch well known as Ni-hyperaccumulators. Nickel and other elements present in pollen and stamen were studied by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The stamen parts of all species were micromorphologically analyzed by scanning electron microscopy coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray probe. Accumulation of Ni was detected in the stamens of all studied species and rarely in the pollen grains. The distribution patterns of Ni were similar among the species examined.  相似文献

Pollen of 34 accessions (23 species, one putative hybrid) of South Pacific and Hawaiian Cyrtandra was investigated by SEM. Most pollen grains are isopolar, 3-colpate, spheroidal in equatorial view, and circular in polar view. Only C. kamooloaensis (Hawaii) exhibits suboblate pollen grains. Average equatorial diameters range from 9 to 16mum. In general, colpi are long and tapering. Colpus membranes show granular elements which decrease in size from the equatorial to the polar regions. Most taxa exhibit a microreticulate mesocolpial exine pattern, in some cases with a tendency to reticulate or fossulate pattern. Lumina size varies within the mesocolpial region of single grains, average lumina diameter is either similar throughout grains or decreases towards the colpial borders or the apocolpial region. C. kamooloaensis exhibits the smallest lumina reported for Hawaiian Cyrtandra so far. In some species, distinct free-standing columellae are present. Except for a fine granular ornamentation of shallow grooves on the muri of the Samoan C. richii supratectal elements are lacking. Pollen of South Pacific Cyrtandra does not provide characters directly suitable for generic subdivisions. There is no obvious correlation between morphologically defined species groups and exine types, but some evidence for parallel evolution of these types. Nearly related taxa (e.g., the C. cymosa group of Gillett 1973) show considerable palynological differences. Variation within some currently accepted species is more prominent than between taxa clearly belonging to different evolutionary lines. This could reflect deficiencies in species delimitation.  相似文献

Pollen ultrastructure has been investigated in 35 taxa of Gnaphalieae (Compositae), predominantly from New Zealand. Pollen grains of all taxa examined are tectate‐columellate and caveate. The characters regarded as particularly distinctive include variability of columellar form and internal organisation of the columellae. The importance of pollen characters in the classification of the New Zealand Gnaphalieae is discussed. The species of Haastia, characterised by senecioid pollen and internal tecta, do not belong to the Gnaphalieae. In the species with helianthoid pollen and sub‐columellae five different columellae types can be distinguished.  相似文献

Pollen size and exine structure of the following five Onosma L. species from Slovakia and Italy were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy: Onosma echioides, O. tornensis, O. visianii, O. arenaria, and O. pseudoarenaria. Among the taxa studied, O. echioides has the smallest pollen grains in average (10.5–17.5 × 8.0–14.5 μm), and O. pseudoarenaria the largest grains in average (15.3–20.5 × 12.3–16.3 μm). Pollen grains of all 5 species are small sized, 3-syncolporate, subprolate, heteropolar, with ovate equatorial outlines and circular to rounded triangular polar outlines; the tectum is microechinate. A positive correlation is found between pollen size and chromosome number. The value of pollen characters for taxonomic purposes and the position of the taxa studied within the genus Onosma are discussed.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of 10 taxa from Turkey, four of them endemic, belonging to the genus Petrorhagia (Caryophyllaceae), P. alpina subsp. alpina, P. alpina subsp. olympica, P. cretica, P. dubia, P. hispidula, P. lycica, P. pamphylica, P. peroninii, P. prolifera and P. saxifraga, has been investigated using light (LM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. Pollen morphology differences among these taxa have been determined. The pollen type of investigated taxa is polyporate (12–22-porate), sphaeroidal, the exine exhibits a tectate structure and a microechinate ornamentation. Petrorhagia alpina subsp. alpina has the smallest pollen grain diameter (18.57 μm) and P. dubia the largest one (37.80 μm). The number of pores ranges from 12 (in P. dubia and P. saxifraga) to 22 (in P. alpina subsp. alpina and P. alpina subsp. olympica and P. hispidula) with a minimum pore diameter of 2.37 μm in P. alpina subsp. alpina and a maximum pore diameter of 4.23 μm in P. peroninii. The exine thickness ranges from 1.73 μm in P. saxifraga to 3.78 μm in P. pamphylica. In this study, the systematic implications are discussed in the light of palynological results.  相似文献

Pollen exine morphology of nine of the ten species of Cantua (Polemoniaceae) is examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. A total of 28 specimens of C. bicolor, C. buxifolia, C. candelilla, C. cuzcoensis, C. flexuosa, C. pyrifolia, C. quercifolia, C. volcanica, and an as yet undescribed species (Cantua sp. nov.) are examined using either fresh or herbarium material. Pollen grains are found to be spheroidal, pantoporate, and quite large; mean diameter varies from 62 to 87?μm. Mean number of pores varies from 4.5 to 21.2 and mean pore size varies from 4.86 to 12.40?μm. Pollen grains of all species have insulate semitectate sexines. This feature distinguishes the pollen of Cantua species from the remainder of the Polemoniaceae. Insulae are evenly distributed over the surface of the pollen grain, with the exception of C. flexuosa and occasionally C. buxifolia, where insulae are more sparsely and haphazardly distributed. The majority of the species examined have irregularly shaped tectal insulae, with the exception of the large rounded insulae in C. quercifolia and the elongated narrow insulae in C. volcanica. Cantua quercifolia and C. volcanica have supratectal verrucae, a possible synapomorphy. In comparison to close relatives, the pollen grains of Cantua are evolutionarily conserved, and show little variation among species.  相似文献

Pollen grains of M, and C, generation plants of Trichosanthes anguina L. were studied after treatment of seeds with X-rays and colchicine respectively. Pollen sterility increased with increase in X-ray dose and colchicine concentration. The polar axis of X-irradiated populations was shorter than that of controls. But colchicine treatment resulted in larger pollen grains than the controls, although the exine did not increase as much. Ex-perimentally-produced tetraploids had larger pollen grains than diploids and triploids. The triploids were characterised by changes in pore morphology. Of 293 treated plants examined, 11 aberrant plants were isolated in the M, and C, generations. These plants had large and small fertile pollen grains, and also showed treatment effects in external morphology and chromosomal aberration during meiosis. The changes in polar diameter were not associated with variation in chromosomal material.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of 11 species (including two subspecies and two varieties) belonging to two genera (Helianthemum and Fumana) of the family Cistaceae in Egypt was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy.Pollen grains of the studied taxa were found to be radially symmetrical and tricolporate.Pollen size, shape, apertures, and exine ornamentation characteristics were valuable parameters among the studied taxa. The largest pollen size was recorded in H.salicifolium and the smallest one observed in H.kahiricum subsp, schweinfurthii.Pollen shape in the Egyptian taxa varied from (sub-)prolate to prolate spheroidal, but F.arabica is different in having sub-oblate grains. The pollen data confirm that H.lippii and H.sessiliflorum are very closely related species.Pollen sculpture was useful in distinguishing between H.vesicarium var.vesicarium and H.vesicarium var.ciliatum.Three main pollen types of exine ornamentation were recognized:retipilate; reticulate to verrucate; and striate.Based on palynological data,a key for the studied taxa is suggested.  相似文献

Pollen grains of several species and varieties ofNarcissus were examined with a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Normal pollen grains were kidney- or spindle-shaped with a germination furrow and a reticulate structure similar to that of the pollen grains ofAmaryllis. Pollen grains germinated within 2 to 3 hr. Percentage of germination was dependent upon temperature and treatment. Pollen tubes grew in length up to 1,000 μm and branched occasionally or behaved in strange fashion. Fresh pollen grains germinated more in distilled water at lower temperature than in sucrose-aqueous medium. Both in the presence and in the absence of stigmatic exudate calcium increased the percentage of germination. Gibberellic acid, abscisic acid and coumarin inhibited the pollen germination. Plasmoptysis occurred in all species and in all media tested except in a medium containing coumarin without stigmatic exudates. Plasmoptysis did not seem to be induced by hypotonic medium alone. Pollen of high germination capacity showed a high percentage of plasmoptysis. Based on the results obtained, evolution and sterility of theNarcissus plant was discussed.  相似文献

The quality and quantity of pollen from three types of flowers; elongata, reduced elongata and staminate from the commercialized Thai papaya cultivar ‘Khak Nual’ were determined using pollen morphology, pollen physical characters and pollen development processes. Pollen development progressed at the same pace in the three types of pollen-producing flowers and was consistent with pollen development in many angiosperms. Pollen morphology showed that papaya pollen grains are tricolporate, with three apertures, and there is no significant difference in diameter (25.18–25.72 μm) and weight (11.76–15.45 ng) among pollen sources. The staminate flower shows the lowest amount of pollen, with 12,368 pollen per anther, but higher viability and germination rates of 95.53 % and 53.64 %, respectively. In contrast, the elongata type shows the highest amount of pollen grains with 14,884 pollen per anther and the lowest viability and germination rates, 93.06 % and 46.33 % respectively. The physical characteristics of pollen grains from reduced elongate and elongate flowers are similar. Reduced elongate flower type can donate pollen without self-pollinating.  相似文献

The present paper describes the pollen morphology of 31 species of the genus Quercus from China. The pollen grains were all examined with light microscope and scanning electron microscope, and those of some species under transmission electron microscope. Pollen grains of the genus are spheroidal or subspheroidal, 16.8-50.4μm in diameter, 3colporoidate or 3-colpate. The exine is 2-layered, 0.4-1.8μm thick, sexine thicker than nexine, granulated tuberculate or verrucate.  相似文献

In order to provide new insights into phylogenetic relationships among the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus , 28 illustrations are provided of the pollen grains of 22 selected species studied from 11 sections of the subgenera represented in the neotropics. Special attention has been given to subgenus Conami because of its variability in pollen morphology: of eight species illustrated, the apertures are diploporate colpi in three species and pores in five species; exine ornamentation is vermiculate in two species and pilate in the other six species. The six species in the neotropical sections Pityrocladus and Microglochidion (subgenus Emblica ) are characterized by prolate grains with an increased number of colpi (4–8). Of particular interest are species in which the pollen exine is clypeate (with exine shields); clypeate pollen grains are illustrated in two species of subgenus Xylophylla and in one species of section Cyclanthera that has unique exine shields with single central pila. The pollen of the one Brazilian phylloclade-bearing species illustrated (in section Choretropsis ) has 3-colporate grains with reticulate exine, typical for subgenus Phyllanthus , and very different from the clypeate grains of the West Indian phylloclade-bearing species in section Xylophylla . This pollen evidence clearly demonstrates homoplasy in the origin of phylloclades in Phyllanthus . Pollen morphological data suggest that the neotropical taxa of Phyllanthus have arisen following colonization from Africa (subgenus Kirganelia ) and Asia (subgenus Emblica ). © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 138 , 325–338.  相似文献
