Sex differences in resource utilization by the peacock blenny 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents data on the seasonal variation of gonadosomatic, hepatosomatic and feeding indices in nesting males, females and female-like males of the blenniid fish Salaria pavo . Eviscerated condition factors, female fecundity and feeding rates are also presented. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that females maximize their feeding rates during reproduction, converting food into eggs through repeated spawning. Nesting males feed at a very low rate during the breeding season. It is argued that one major component of the reproductive costs in these males is the reduction of feeding opportunities. Female-like males present lower reproductive costs, which probably reflects the compromise between fertilizing some eggs and growing. 相似文献

Historical data suggest that many bee species have declined in body size. Larger-bodied bees with narrow phenological and dietary breadth are most prone to declines in body size over time. This may be especially true in solitary, desert-adapted species that are vulnerable to climate change such as Centris pallida (Hymenoptera: Apidae). In addition, body size changes in species with size-linked behaviours could threaten the prevalence of certain behavioural phenotypes long-term. C. pallida solitary bees are found in the Sonoran Desert. Males use alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) and are dimorphic in both morphology and behaviour. C. pallida male body size has been studied since the 1970s in the same population. The authors collected body size data in 2022 and combined it with published records from 1974–2022. The authors find a persistent decline in the mean head width of patrolling males, and shifts towards smaller body sizes in the populations of males found foraging and hovering. Both morphs declined in average body size, and the proportion of large-morph males in the population decreased by 8%. Mating males did not decline in mean body size over the last five decades. The authors discuss hypotheses related to the decline in C. pallida male head width. Finally, the authors advocate for C. pallida as an excellent study system for understanding the stability of ARTs with size-linked behavioural phenotypes. 相似文献

The expression of alternative reproductive tactics can be plastic and occur simultaneously depending on cues that vary spatially or temporally. For example, variation in resources and sexual selection intensity is expected to influence the pay‐off of each tactic and shape the decision of which tactic to employ. Males of the nuptial gift‐giving spider Pisaura mirabilis can adopt three tactics: offering a genuine prey gift, a ‘worthless’ non‐nutritious gift or no gift. We hypothesized that resources and/or male body condition, and mating opportunity and sexual selection intensity, vary over the course of the mating season to shape the co‐existence of alternative traits. We measured these variables in the field over two seasons, to investigate the predictions that as the mating season progresses, (i) males become more likely to employ a gift‐giving tactic, and (ii) the likelihood of switching from worthless to genuine gifts increases. Prey availability increased over the season and co‐varied with the propensity of males to employ the gift‐giving tactic, but we found no support for condition‐dependent gift giving. Males responded to an increase in female availability by increasing their mating effort (gift production). Furthermore, the frequency of genuine gift use increased with sexual selection intensity, consistent with the assumption that sperm competition intensity increases with time. Our results suggest that the frequency of alternative tactics is shaped by seasonal changes in ecological factors and sexual selection. This leads to relaxed selection for the gift‐giving tactic early in the season when females are less choosy and resources more scarce, and increased selection for genuine gifts later in the season driven by mating opportunity and risk of sperm competition. 相似文献

This study examined whether dominant migratory males (adopting fighter tactics) of the masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou would more aggressively attack large mature male parr (adopting sneaker tactics) as large mature male parr are expected to have the potential to cause a greater decrease in fertilization success. The frequency of aggressive behaviour was not related to the body size of males, and it increased with the frequency of interactions with mature male parr. The fertilization success of mature male parr was much lower than migratory males, and no relationship was observed between fertilization success and aggressive behaviour. The low fertilization success of mature male parr, despite infrequent aggressive behaviour by migratory males, indicates that there might be little benefit for migratory males to attack mature male parr more aggressively according to their body size. 相似文献

There is increasing evidence that exposure to stress during development can have sustained effects on animal phenotype and performance across life-history stages. For example, developmental stress has been shown to decrease the quality of sexually selected traits (e.g. bird song), and therefore is thought to decrease reproductive success. However, animals exposed to developmental stress may compensate for poor quality sexually selected traits by pursuing alternative reproductive tactics. Here, we examine the effects of developmental stress on adult male reproductive investment and success in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We tested the hypothesis that males exposed to developmental stress sire fewer offspring through extra-pair copulations (EPCs), but invest more in parental care. To test this hypothesis, we fed nestlings corticosterone (CORT; the dominant avian stress hormone) during the nestling period and measured their adult reproductive success using common garden breeding experiments. We found that nestlings reared by CORT-fed fathers received more parental care compared with nestlings reared by control fathers. Consequently, males fed CORT during development reared nestlings in better condition compared with control males. Contrary to the prediction that developmental stress decreases male reproductive success, we found that CORT-fed males also sired more offspring and were less likely to rear non-genetic offspring compared with control males, and thus had greater overall reproductive success. These data are the first to demonstrate that developmental stress can have a positive effect on fitness via changes in reproductive success and provide support for an adaptive role of developmental stress in shaping animal phenotype. 相似文献

Most studies on sexual size dimorphism address proximate and functional questions related to adults, but sexual size dimorphism usually develops during ontogeny and developmental trajectories of sexual size dimorphism are poorly understood. We studied three bird species with variation in adult sexual size dimorphism: black coucals (females 69% heavier than males), white-browed coucals (females 13% heavier than males) and ruffs (males 70% heavier than females). Using a flexible Bayesian generalized additive model framework (GAMM), we examined when and how sexual size dimorphism developed in body mass, tarsus length and bill length from hatching until fledging. In ruffs, we additionally examined the development of intrasexual size variation among three morphs (Independents, Satellites and Faeders), which creates another level of variation in adult size of males and females. We found that 27–100% of the adult inter- and intrasexual size variation developed until fledging although none of the species completed growth during the observational period. In general, the larger sex/morph grew more quickly and reached its maximal absolute growth rate later than the smaller sex/morph. However, when the daily increase in body mass was modelled as a proportion, growth patterns were synchronized between and within sexes. Growth broadly followed sigmoidal asymptotic models, however only with the flexible GAMM approach, residual distributions were homogeneous over the entire observation periods. These results provide a platform for future studies to relate variation in growth to selective pressures and proximate mechanisms in these three species, and they highlight the advantage of using a flexible model approach for examining growth variation during ontogeny. 相似文献

The effects of resource availability on alternative mating tactics in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Food availability can influence the optimal allocation of timeand energy among alternative behaviors such as foraging, courting, and competing for mates. If populations differ consistentlyin food availability, selection may cause geographic divergencein allocation strategies. At the opposite extreme, a norm ofreaction may evolve such that food intake influences the allocationstrategy of individuals in the same way in all populations.Between these two extremes, food intake reaction norms may divergegenetically among populations. For example, at sites where foodis scarce, selection may strengthen the effect of food intakeon behavior, whereas at sites with abundant food, selectionmay be weak or even oppose plasticity. We tested these ideasby raising male guppies from streams differing in food availabilityin a common laboratory environment on either low or high foodlevels, and then observing them in the presence of male competitors(from the same population and diet group) and receptive females.Males from low-food-availability streams spent more time foragingthan males from high-food-availability streams, independentof food intake. Compared with males raised on the high foodlevel, males raised on the low food level spent more time foragingand were less aggressive towards other males. Courtship displayrate increased with food intake but only in males from low-foodstreams. In contrast, males from high-food streams showed greaterplasticity with respect to male-male aggression. These resultsgenerally support the resource availability/behavioral tradeoffhypothesis while also revealing a surprising degree of ontogeneticcomplexity in a relatively simple system. 相似文献

The abundance of benthic macro-invertebrates, the main prey of river blennies Salaria fluviatilis , decreased drastically through the blenny reproductive season in the River Matarraña, south-east Spain. Despite this, females maintained their body condition, while the body condition of males increased. The latter coincided with the onset of egg guarding, which is carried out by males and which provided them with an opportunity to cannibalize eggs. Indeed, significantly more males than females were egg cannibals. The proportion of cannibalistic males increased as the season progressed, but the overall frequency remained low (7·4%). The number of eggs eaten was not related to the weight of macro-invertebrates ingested by males. In addition, the body condition of cannibalistic and non-cannibalistic males was similar and was not correlated with the number of eggs ingested. It is possible that non-cannibalistic males may have eaten and digested eggs prior to capture. It is concluded that even in productive rivers such as the Matarraña, males may still rely on filial cannibalism to survive until the end of the parental care period. 相似文献

1. One of the fundamental insights of behavioural ecology is that resources influence breeding systems. For instance, when food resources are plenty, one parent is able to care for the young on its own, so that the other parent can desert and became polygamous. We investigated this hypothesis in the context of classical polyandry when females may have several mates within a single breeding season, and parental duties are carried out largely by the male. 2. We studied a precocial wader, the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus, that exhibits variable brood care such that the chicks may be raised by both parents, only by the female or, more often, only by the male. The timing of female desertion varies: some females desert their brood at hatching of the eggs and lay a clutch for a new mate, whereas other females stay with their brood until the chicks fledge. Kentish plovers are excellent organisms with which to study breeding system evolution, as some of their close relatives exhibit classical polyandry (Eurasian dotterel Eudromias morinellus, mountain plover Charadrius montanus), whereas others are polygynous (northern lapwing Vanellus vanellus). 3. Kentish plovers raised their broods in two habitats in our study site in southern Turkey: saltmarsh and lakeshore. Food intake was higher on the lakeshore than in the saltmarsh as judged from feeding behaviour of chicks and adults. As the season proceeded and the saltmarsh dried out, the broods moved toward the lakeshore. 4. As the density of plovers increased on lakeshore, the parents spent more time defending their young, and female parents stayed with their brood longer on the lakeshore. 5. We conclude that the influence of food abundance on breeding systems is more complex than currently anticipated. Abundant food resources appear to have profound implications on spatial distribution of broods, and the social interactions between broods constrain female desertion and polyandry. 相似文献

Both male and female Parablennius sanguinolentus parvicornis were ready to mate by the end of May. Seventy-five per cent of the 1-year-old males were mature, but only 25% of the females reached maturity at this age. In females, gonads formed an increasingly greater proportion of the total weight with age, but in males the proportion decreased. A bimodal distribution of gonadosomatic indices classes was observed in 2-year-old males (intermediate size), which reflected the lower opportunity that intermediate size males have to spend the ejaculates than have the younger and older males. The liver played an important role in the storage of energy before the reproductive season and reserves were utilized during the breeding season. Physical condition was at its lowest in July in both sexes, but in May, just before the breeding season began, large maturing females had significantly lower eviscerated condition than males. This could be due to females investing in oocyte development, while the priority for the males was to reserve their energy for the parental activities to come. In both males and females, older and bigger animals had lower hepatosomatic and body conditions than younger ones. 相似文献

Diel patterns of migration and migration speed were compared between reproductive timing phenotypes in female kokanee salmon Oncorhynchus nerka. Females of varying degrees of reproductive maturation were captured on their migration route to the Meadow Creek Spawning Channel (British Columbia, Canada), were tagged with passive-integrated transponders (PIT tags) and were subsequently monitored with stationary receivers. Females showed crepuscular migration timing, with approximately equal detections at dawn and dusk. In particular, peaks of movement were associated with the appearance of the sun over the mountains in the east and the disappearance of the sun over the mountains in the west. Over 25 m, migration speed was 1·0 body lengths (measured as fork length; L(F) ) s(-1) and did not depend on maturation state. Over 3 km, migration speed was much slower (0·2-0·3 L(F) s(-1) ) than over the short distance, with less mature females migrating more slowly than more mature females. Less mature females appeared to be in less of a hurry to reach breeding areas compared with more mature females. 相似文献

In species with alternative reproductive tactics, males that sneak copulations often have larger, higher quality ejaculates relative to males that defend females or nest sites. Ejaculate traits can, however, exhibit substantial phenotypic plasticity depending on a male's mating role in sperm competition, which may depend on the tactic of his competitor. We tested whether exposure to males of different tactics affected sperm number and quality in the swordtail Xipophorus nigrensis, a species with small males that sneak copulations and large males that court females. Sperm swimming speed was higher when the perceived competitor was small than when the competitor was large. Plasticity, however, was only exhibited by small males. Sperm number and viability were invariant between social environments. Our results suggest sperm quality is role-dependent and that plastic responses to the social environment can differ between male reproductive tactics. 相似文献

Male dimorphism has been reported across different taxa and is usually expressed as the coexistence of a larger morph with exaggerated male traits and a smaller one with reduced traits. The evolution and maintenance of male dimorphism are still poorly understood for several of the species in which it has been observed. Here, we analyse male dimorphism in several species of reptile parasitic nematodes of the genus Spauligodon, in which a major male morph (exaggerated morph), which presents the traditional male morphological traits reported for this taxon, coexists with a minor morph with reduced morphological traits (i.e. reduced genital papillae) resembling more closely the males of the sister genus Skrjabinodon than Spauligodon major males. Because of the level of uncertainty in the results of ancestral state reconstruction, it is unclear if the existence of male dimorphism in this group represents independent instances of convergent evolution or an ancestral trait lost multiple times. Also, although the number of major males per host was positively correlated with the number of females, the same did not hold true for minor males, whose presence was not associated with any other ecological factor. Nevertheless, the existence of male dimorphism in Spauligodon nematodes is tentatively interpreted as resulting from alternative reproductive tactics, with differences in presence and number of individuals as indicators of differences in fitness, with the lower numbers of minor males per host likely maintained by negative frequency‐dependent selection. 相似文献

The probability of Blue‐footed Booby Sula nebouxii fledglings becoming reproductive adults is maximal when one parent is old and the other young, and minimal when both are old or young. No mechanism has been identified to explain this pattern, but here we showed that nestlings with different‐aged parents are the least infested with ticks. This result constitutes preliminary confirmation of the hypothesis that the effect of combined parental ages on probability of recruitment is mediated by offspring immunocompetence. The contribution of immunocompetence and parental care to these parental age effects needs to be unravelled. 相似文献

Amount of risk taking during parental care is often explainedin relation
to the reproductive value of the offspring. The"harm-to-offspring
hypothesis" focuses on the relative harma period of no parental care
can do to the offspring. Accordingto this hypothesis, parents should take
greater risks for offspringin poor condition than for offspring in good
condition. We manipulatedoffspring condition in the pied flycatcher
(Ficedula hypoleuca)and tested the harm-to-offspring hypothesis by
exposing parentsto a predator model (a sparrowhawk, Accipiter
nisus). Time elapseduntil a parent first entered the nest-box was used
as a risk-takingmeasure. Parents spent significantly shorter time until first
nestvisit for offspring in poor condition than for offspring ingood
condition. Hence, the harm-to-offspring hypothesis wassupported. 相似文献

Males of most anuran species (frogs and toads) vocalize to attractmates. However, individuals of many vocal species may also adoptalternative noncalling "satellite" tactics. Satellite malescharacteristically remain in close proximity to calling conspecificsand attempt to intercept incoming females attracted to advertisingmales. Emerson proposed that alternation between calling andnoncalling behavior in anurans is mediated by a reciprocal interactionbetween circulating levels of corticosterone and androgens thatis driven by depletion of energy reserves during vocalization. We tested this hypothesis by examining steroid hormone profilesand the relative body condition of calling and satellite Woodhouse'stoads (Bufo woodhousii) and Great Plains toads (B. cognatus).Consistent with Emerson's hypothesis, callers had significantlyhigher circulating corticosterone levels and were in bettercondition than satellites. However, levels of testosterone anddihydrotestosterone did not differ significantly between satellitesand callers, and we found no evidence that high levels of corticosteronehad an inhibitory effect on androgen production in either species. These data thus support a relationship between corticosteronelevels and depletion of energy reserves during bouts of vocalizationbut suggest that alternation between calling and satellite behaviormay be associated with direct effects of corticosterone on brainvocal control centers. We propose a model that incorporatesrelationships among energy reserves, androgens, corticosterone, and arginine vasotocin-producing neurons in the telencephalonto explain transitions between calling and satellite tacticsin toads. 相似文献

One group of woolly spider monkeys, or muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides), was observed from June 1983 through July 1984 at Fazenda Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study subjects spent an average of 49% of their daylight time resting, 29% traveling, and 19% feeding. They shifted their diurnal schedule of activities in response to seasonal changes in temperature and rainfall. The activity budgets of adult males and females were similar. However, a comparison of three adult females in different reproductive conditions revealed that the lactating female spent a greater proportion of time feeding than did both the pregnant and nonreproductive females. Intraspecific differences in group size and diet appear to be important to understanding differences in the activity budgets of Brachyteles. Differences between locomotion patterns of woolly spider monkeys and sympatric howler monkeys may explain activity budget differences based on group size and diet. 相似文献
