Distribution and density by habitat for age‐0, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum, 1792), were compared for two Maine estuaries to help define essential fish habitat for this life history stage. Two estuaries (Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay) along Mid‐coast Maine were sampled monthly with daytime 1.0 m2 fixed‐frame throw traps around neap low tide, May–December over two consecutive years (2003–2004). Both eelgrass and adjacent sand/mud (20–60 cm deep) were randomly sampled with equal effort (4–12 samples per month) at two sites in both the Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay. Significantly higher densities of YOY winter flounder (2–9 cm TL) occurred in eelgrass relative to sand/mud. Density increased significantly in both habitats in 2004, and was higher in Penobscot Bay relative to the Weskeag River. YOY densities compared by eelgrass coverage within throw traps were found to be significantly higher in eelgrass that exceeded 30% coverage when compared with adjacent sand/mud areas and eelgrass coverage of 10–20%. YOY occurred in all months sampled (May–December); no density differences existed by month. These results indicate that very shallow (<0.6 m) eelgrass habitat is of key importance to YOY winter flounder in Maine estuaries and should be viewed as essential fish habitat (EFH) for this species and life stage.  相似文献

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

Higher biomass especially of some aquatic macrophyte species offered a higher density of phytophilous zoobenthos, but did not increase the proportion of non‐planktonic to planktonic prey in young‐of‐the‐year perch Perca fluviatilis. Both abundance and biomass of non‐planktonic prey dominated over planktonic prey in the pond with lower biomass of aquatic macrophytes and lower food. Survival of P. fluviatilis was lower (20%) in the pond with lower food than in the other pond (34%), however, specific growth rate (1·3% day?1) and final Fulton's condition factor of P. fluviatilis were similar in both ponds.  相似文献

Two sharks, visually identified in the field as young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini, were identified as great hammerhead Sphyrna mokarran based on nuclear‐encoded single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and sequences of mtDNA. Individuals were captured and released in Bulls Bay, SC, and Saint Joseph Bay, FL, in 2013 and 2014, respectively. These findings indicate S. mokarran may be pupping in or around these areas and highlight new regions that may be a productive focus for future research on early life history of S. mokarran.  相似文献

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) are nutritionally dependent upon their dam through the majority of their first year. Several indices of body condition were measured in YOY 1.5–9 mo of age captured in Southeast Alaska (n = 122), the Gulf of Alaska (n = 182), and the Aleutian Islands (n = 38) to test the hypothesis that nutritional stress impacted the ability of adult female Steller sea lions to adequately nourish their late gestation YOY in the central Aleutian Islands in the early 2000s. Body mass (kg) and percent total body lipid content (%TBL) increased with age in all three regions of Alaska that were sampled (P < 0.05). Young‐of‐the‐year 7–9 mo of age were leaner in Southeast Alaska (27.6% ± 1.0%) and Gulf of Alaska (29.5% ± 0.8%) than in the Aleutian Islands (35.7% ± 1.2%, P < 0.001). Condition indices calculated from morphometric measures did not strongly predict the %TBL measured by isotope dilution. The trend for Aleutian Island YOY to have larger body mass and larger body fat reserves are counter to what would be expected if dams were unable to adequately provision their late lactation YOY due to inadequate food availability in the central Aleutian Islands.  相似文献

The stable isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N values) of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) is influenced by their diet. Young‐of‐the‐year during lactation and postweaning fast are expected be enriched in 15N compared to foraging seals. We studied the temporal variation of stable isotope composition of young‐of‐the‐year and adults to determine from which point in time the young‐of‐the‐year tissues (i.e., muscles and vibrissae) are influenced by independent foraging only. These results were compared with the development of trophically transmitted parasitic infections. The δ15N values in young‐of‐the‐year muscles decreased from June (20.3‰ ± 0.5‰) to October (18.5‰ ± 0.4‰), while those of foraging seals were all year long below 19.2‰. This decrease coincides with the increase of parasitic infections in young‐of‐the‐year, reflecting a shift to fish diet. Together these results suggest that the muscles of the young‐of‐the‐year older than 5–6 mo reflect independent foraging and that they can therefore be used in community diet studies. The nursing signal in vibrissae was unclear, as the δ15N values of young‐of‐the‐year were stable over time, whereas those of adults varied seasonally. However, δ15N values of nursing pups were significantly higher than those of adults in May and June, maybe due to their reliance on milk.  相似文献

Piscivory of perch can occur within a few weeks after perch hatch, leading to the development of two size‐cohorts, with the larger perch becoming cannibals. However, the possibility of early piscivory is assumed to depend on the hatch timing of the prey and predator. Two species, bream (2006) and roach (2007), were tested as the prey fish. The bream (hatching 12 days after perch) were preyed upon by the perch, leading to the predicted development of two sizes of cohorts as well as to cannibalism. With roach (hatching simultaneously with perch), however, no piscivory or cannibalism occurred and the perch population was unimodally distributed. The results of this experimental pond study underpin recent theoretical findings that size differences between predator and prey, determined through differences in the timing of hatching as well as differences in juvenile growth rates, foster the occurrence of early piscivory in YOY perch that may lead to bimodality and finally to intra‐cohort cannibalism.  相似文献

The muscle and liver fatty acid composition of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Port Jackson sharks Heterodontus portusjacksoni were investigated to determine the effects of a known dietary lipid source v. maternal input as demonstrated by egg yolk fatty acid profiles. Ten Heterodontus portusjacksoni egg yolks were collected in situ and compared with four hatched H. portusjacksoni fed a known diet in a controlled feeding experiment of 185 days. This study demonstrated that fatty acids are probably conservatively transferred from egg yolks to YOY H. portusjacksoni, while diet did not have a large effect on the fatty acid composition of the liver or muscle.  相似文献

Ninety‐one young‐of‐the‐year Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were captured using a non‐invasive snorkelling technique in a 38 m section of Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick, Canada, to test whether related fish settle closer to one another than unrelated fish. A maximum likelihood estimate of parentage relationships assessed by genotyping eight microsatellite loci revealed five half‐sibling families in the sample of fish. Related juvenile S. salar were not found closer to one another than unrelated fish in three analyses at two spatial scales: a comparison of the relatedness of focal fish to their nearest neighbour and to their four nearest neighbours, and a correlation of the pair‐wise relatedness and distance matrices for all fish in the sample. The lack of a kin‐biased dispersion pattern may be related to the lower density of fish or the scarcity of full‐siblings at the study site compared to laboratory conditions.  相似文献

This study investigated the development of hypo‐osmoregulatory capacity and timing of downstream migration in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts from the River Stjørdalselva and stocked young‐of‐the‐year (YOY), derived S. salar smolts from the tributary River Dalåa. Both wild and stocked S. salar smolts developed seawater (SW) tolerance in early May, persisting through June, measured as their ability to regulate plasma osmolality and chloride following 24 h SW (salinity = 35) exposure. Although the majority of downstream migration among the stocked S. salar smolts occurred later than observed in their wild counterparts, the development of SW tolerance occurred concurrently. The wild S. salar from Stjørdalselva and stocked YOY smolts from the River Dalåa started to migrate on the same cumulative day‐degrees (D°). The study revealed no downstream migration before development of SW tolerance. This emphasizes the importance of incorporating physiological status when studying environmental triggers for downstream migration of S. salar smolts. Overall, these findings suggest that the onset of smolt migration in stocked S. salar smolts was within the smolt window from an osmoregulatory point of view.  相似文献

Knowledge on the trophic ecology of elasmobranch species in all their size classes is important to determine complex trophic roles and relationships between members of the community, which ultimately promotes the development of more effective conservation measures. This study investigates the diet of young‐of‐the‐year from two shark and one skate species that are common within the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Identification and analysis of stomach contents indicated that the broadnose sevengill shark Notorynchus cepedianus fed mostly on fishes (96.08%IRI), whereas the angular angel shark Squatina guggenheim, and the smallnose fanskate Sympterygia bonapartii preyed mainly on crustaceans (68.73–99.96%IRI). In particular, Artemesia longinaris, a widely distributed small shrimp, was an important prey item for the two crustacean feeders. The high proportion of stomachs with food and the trophic levels suggest that the three species are active predators at a very young age. A high frequency of neonates was also observed for all species, suggesting that parturition events are probably occurring nearby. Overall, this study suggest that the nearshore waters of northern Argentina are functioning as an important feeding ground for co‐occurring elasmobranch species within an important estuarine habitat.  相似文献

Total length, body mass and gut content mass of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis, dace Leuciscus leuciscus and bleak Alburnus alburnus were recorded over the summer of 2006 at three littoral sites at Upper Lake Constance. In P. fluviatilis and L. leuciscus, gut content mass correlated positively with wave‐induced energy flux (EF) of the respective site and sampling day, while no correlation of gut content mass with EF was found in A. alburnus. It was assumed that benthivorous P. fluviatilis and L. leuciscus profited from suspended or uncovered benthic food items generated by wave action at sites and periods with high EF. Alburnus alburnus, in contrast, feeding mainly on zooplankton in upper parts of the water column, could not profit from increased EF. In P. fluviatilis, increased gut content mass during periods of high EF resulted in higher growth rates. For L. leuciscus, no real growth rates in local fish populations could be determined, as individuals were less sedentary, and when increased growth occurred at sites during the periods of high EF, migration of fish levelled out the resulting size differences within few days. The results of this study show that dynamic habitat variables affect site profitability in the littoral zone of lakes, especially in benthivorous fishes. Therefore, dynamic habitat variables should be considered in addition to fixed habitat properties in analyses of habitat choice of fishes in the littoral zone of lakes.  相似文献

Immediate mortality induced by electrofishing and handling of young‐of the‐year (YOY) fish of five cyprinid species (bitterling Rhodeus amarus, chub Leuciscus cephalus, bleak Alburnus alburnus, barbel Barbus barbus, roach Rutilus rutilus) was quantified during routine YOY fish monitoring (point abundance sampling with backpack electrofisher, in situ identification and measurement). Sampled, identified and measured fish were held in screened containers immersed in the river for 5 h after electrofishing. Bleak exhibited significantly higher mortality (17%) than all other species (1–3%). Mortality decreased significantly with fish length; fish <35 mm exhibited the highest mortality. Anode size (10, 20, and 30 cm diameter) had no direct effect on mortality. Point abundance electrofishing with in situ identification and measurement is a safe method for sampling riverine YOY cyprinids.  相似文献

To test the influence of the largest Central Amazon fish consumption centre on the potential fish population recruitment, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) abundances of matrinxã Brycon amazonicus (Spix and Agassiz, 1829), jaraquis Semaprochilodus insignis (Jardine and Schomburgk, 1841), S. taeniurus (Valenciennes, 1821) and tambaqui Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) were estimated in two floodplain areas of the middle Solimões‐Amazon River – one near the city of Manaus and the other 500 km from Manaus – in the 2007–2008 flooding. Matrinxã presented the highest abundance among the four species, with 87.8% of captured individuals. The difference was significant in the representation of YOY matrinxãs between the two studied areas, with the input more significant in the last months of flooding in the area 500 km from Manaus. Jaraquis represented 12.1% of captures and showed no difference between areas. Tambaqui abundance was shown to be critical in both areas, with the capture of only 28 YOY (0.1%), and with no differences between the two floodplains. Matrinxã and jaraquis are more likely to present stabile stocks in the middle Solimões‐Amazon River; on the other hand, matrinxã requires attention due to differences in the YOY input between the two areas and in their low input in the Upper Amazon River, near Manaus. Based on the present work and on the landing history in Manaus, tambaqui is still considered as under strong overexploitation, showing some of the characteristics of overfishing recruitment in the middle Solimões‐Amazon.  相似文献

Winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus were collected at monthly intervals from December 2009 to May 2011, to describe the pattern and seasonality of oocyte development, including: (1) the group‐synchronous transition from primary to secondary oocytes that initiates immediately after spawning, (2) the slow (months) development of vitellogenic oocytes followed by the rapid (weeks) maturation of oocytes, (3) the synchronous nature of mature oocytes ovulating, but the discrete releases of benthic eggs in batches, (4) the protracted (months) degradation of postovulatory follicles and (5) the occurrence of follicular atresia. Although fish were collected across only c. 2° latitudinal range, the spawning season was c. 1 month later in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) than on Georges Bank and in southern New England. This is probably due to lower temperatures in the GOM. These stock‐specific data regarding the time course of oogenesis are of practical value. This information is discussed in relation to measuring and interpreting elements of reproductive potential such as maturation, skipped spawning and fecundity, the response of reproductive traits by this widely distributed species to changing climate and the response by this common, marine‐estuarine species to urbanization, particularly environmental pollutants and dredging.  相似文献

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) couple the oxidation of aldehydes to the reduction of NAD(P)+. These enzymes have gained importance as they have been related to the detoxification of aldehydes generated in several diseases involving oxidative stress. It has been determined that tetrameric ALDHs work only with two of their four active sites (half‐of‐the‐sites reactivity), but the mechanistic reason for this feature remains unknown. In this study, tetrameric human aldehyde dehydrogenase class 1A1 (ALDH1A1) was dimerized to study the correlation of the oligomeric structure with the presence of half‐of‐the‐sites reactivity. Stable dimers from ALDH1A1 were generated by combining the mutation of two residues of the dimer–dimer interface in the tetramer (previously shown to render a low‐active and unstable enzyme) and the fusion of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the C‐terminus of the mutant. Some kinetic properties of the GFP‐fusion mutant resembled those of human aldehyde dehydrogenase class 3A1, a native dimer, in that the fusion dimer did not show burst in the generation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and was less sensitive to the action of specific modulators. The presence of primary isotope effect indicated that the rate‐limiting step changed from NADH release to hydride transfer. The mutant showed higher activity with malondialdehyde and acrolein and was more resistant to inactivation by acrolein compared with the wild type. The mutant kinetic profile showed two hyperbolic components when the substrates were varied, suggesting the presence of two active sites with different affinities and catalytic capacities. In conclusion, the ALDH1A1–GFP dimeric mutant exhibits full site reactivity, suggesting that only the tetrameric structure induces the half‐of‐the‐sites reactivity. 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP), a major by-product of alkylphenol ethoxylates, is used in several industries and as a consequence is quite common in rivers, estuaries and other aquatic environments that receive sewage discharges or are near offshore oil platforms. 4-NP is an environmental estrogen that also binds human and rodent Pregnane X-receptor (PXR), the orphan nuclear receptor that controls the expression of several detoxication genes in mammals, including several CYP3A and CYP2B family members. These P450s preferentially hydroxylate testosterone in the 6beta- and 16beta-positions, respectively. In this study, the effects of 4-NP on testosterone metabolism and hepatic CYP3A induction were compared to the effects of St. John's Wort (SJW), a well established mammalian PXR agonist, in winter flounder. Male winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) were injected with 100 mg/kg/day 4-NP or 500 mg/kg/day SJW or both (S and N) every 24 h. Forty-eight hours after the initial injections, flounder were euthanized. Western blots and testosterone 6beta-hydroxylation indicated that CYP3A was increased 50% by 4-NP, but was not affected by SJW. Testosterone 16beta-hydroxylase activity was also significantly increased in flounder treated with 4-NP (2.8 x), but not with SJW. This is not consistent with our hypothesis that both SJW and 4-NP would induce CYP3A. Subtractive hybridization was performed between control and 4-NP treated hepatic mRNA samples to isolate differentially expressed genes. Subtractive hybridization indicated that several acute phase proteins were altered by 4-NP. Quantitative real-time PCR (Q-PCR) confirmed 4-NP altered the expression of complement components C8b, cathepsin L, C-type lectin domain, FK506 binding protein 2 precursor (FKBP2) and an EST (expressed sequence tag). SJW and 4-NP treated flounder demonstrated similar induction profiles for the EST, cathepsin L and FKBP2, suggesting that SJW was at a sufficient dose to alter gene expression but not induce P450s. In conclusion, testosterone hydroxylase activity and Western blots indicate that SJW did not activate detoxication pathways in a similar manner to 4-NP.  相似文献
