The aim of this study was to investigate the use of Artemia salina nauplii enriched with chosen fluorochromes for mass marking vendace Coregonus albula (L.) larvae. In the experiment, vendace larvae (6 DPH) were fed with live or frozen A. salina nauplii immersed in tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), calcein (Cal) or alizarin red S (ARS) for four subsequent days. More successful effects (marking otoliths) were obtained by feeding the fish with live nauplii enriched with fluorochromes, regardless of the dye type. The highest percentage of marked otoliths (100%) was recorded in the group fed with live nauplii immersed in TC. In the groups fed live or frozen nauplii enriched with Cal and ARS, a lower percentage of marked individuals (63.3%–73.7% and 56.7%–63.3%, respectively) were recorded. The survival rate of vendace larvae in particular groups oscillated between 93.7% and 95.7%. There were no significant differences in the total body length and body weight of the reared vendace larvae among different groups. In conclusion, for mass marking of vendace larvae using a feeding method, fish fed A. salinalive nauplii enriched with TC at a dose of 600 ppm is recommended for fishery practice.  相似文献

Abstract

Polymerization of hemoglobin S is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sickle cell disease, which leads to sickling and destruction of red blood cell. Alizarin, a bioactive compound from Rubia cordifolia, is reported to be blood purifier. This study investigates the potential of alizarin as an anti-sickling agent, showing a significant decrease in the rate of polymerization, therefore inhibiting the rate of sickling with increasing concentration. Interaction studies indicated that the fluorescence intensity of sickle hemoglobin (Hb S) decreases gradually with increasing alizarin concentration. This suggests the static quenching, where binding constant and the number of binding sites were deduced at different temperatures. The negative values of Gibbs energy change (ΔG0) strongly suggest that it is entropy-driven spontaneous and exothermic reaction. Negative enthalpy (ΔH0) and positive entropy (ΔS0) stipulated that hydrogen and hydrophobic bonding forces were interfering in a hydrophobic micro-environment of β6Val leading to Hb S polymerization inhibition. In circular dichroism (CD) spectra, Hb S in the presence of alizarin shows helical structural changes leading to destabilization of Hb S polymer. These findings were also supported by molecular docking simulation studies using DOCK6 and GROMACS. So, from these findings, we may conclude that alizarin interacts with Hb S through hydrogen bonding and leading to inhibition of Hb S polymerization. Consequently, alizarin may have potential use as an anti-sickle cell medication for sickle cell disorder.

To assess the periodicity of micro‐increment formation in otoliths of Lipophrys pholis, 90 early juveniles were immersed in alizarin red S or tetracycline hydrochloride for 24 h and sacrificed after 10, 20 and 30 days. The number of micro‐increments viewed under light microscopy was significantly related to the duration of the experimental period, and the slopes of the linear regressions were not significantly different from 1. This study indicates that micro‐increments in sagittae were deposited daily and can be used as reliable sources of age information for L. pholis.  相似文献

The use of Panagrellus redivivus as live feed for bighead carp and Asian catfish larvae was tested. In experiment 1, carp larvae were given Artemia nauplii (control) or Panagrellus twice daily for 21 days. A third treatment consisted of unfed larvae. The same three treatments were used in experiment 2 plus another with a commercial entomopathogenic nematode (EPN). Bighead carp larvae given Panagrellus in experiment 1 had much lower growth and survival than those fed Artemia nauplii. This could be due to low nematode density (5–30 mL?1 water) during feeding. The unfed larvae had 100% mortality by days 11–13. In experiment 2, growth and survival of carp larvae given Artemia nauplii (5–10 mL?1) and Panagrellus (50 mL?1) did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). All unfed larvae had died by day 13, while larvae fed EPN were all dead by day 8. Two experiments on Asian catfish were likewise conducted. In experiment 1, the catfish larvae were fed Tubifex (ad libitum), Panagrellus (50–100 mL?1 per feeding) orArtemia (5 nauplii mL?1 per feeding) three times daily for 14 days. In experiment 2, larvae were fed Artemia alone (10 nauplii mL?1 per feeding), Panagrellus alone (100 mL?1 per feeding), or their combination with a 38% protein dry diet twice daily. For both experiments, catfish larvae fed Panagrellus had significantly lower growth and survival than those fed Tubifex or Artemia. The combination of Panagrellus and dry diet created little improvement in the growth and survival of catfish larvae.  相似文献

Two 60‐day experiments were carried out on tench (Tinca tinca L.) from day 5 post‐hatch. Density was 20 larvae L?1 and temperature 24 ± 0.5°C. In experiment 1, Artemia nauplii were the sole food, testing nauplii amounts and feeding frequency. High survival rates (between 79.5% and 95.5%) were obtained. Growth was faster as nauplii amounts were greater; the highest growth rate (11.00), weight (265.5 mg) and Fulton’s coefficient (1.40) were obtained when fish were fed in excess once a day, without significant differences from the growth obtained by feeding in excess of eight times a day. In experiment 2, a dry diet for marine fish was tested as a replacement for Artemia nauplii, following two transition protocols, one faster than the other; high survival rates (between 77.7% and 87.1%) were again obtained. The slower transition allowed a growth rate of 10.14, length of 23.1 mm, weight of 158.3 mg and a Fulton’s coefficient of 1.28, without significant differences from the faster transition. At all stages, growth values were significantly higher from feeding nauplii in excess as the sole food, but the required nauplii quantity was six times higher than the amount supplied to the animals fed the dry diet.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were undertaken using Amonardia normani and Schizopera cf. compacta, two meiobenthic harpacticoid copepods commonly found in coastal lagoons. The first experiments were designed to determine if the phototrophic sulfur bacteria Chromatium gracile can be ingested by these copepods and at what concentrations. Egestion rate was used as an index of feeding rate. The response of the egestion rate, expressed in numbers of faecal pellets produced by copepod per day, as a function of bacterial concentration followed the functional model. A. normani attained constant feeding rates from the bacterial concentration of 1 × 107 cells ml–1 (5 µg C ml–1) onwards, S. cf. compacta attained constant feeding rates from 2.6 × 107 cells ml–1 (13 µg C ml–1) onwards. The faecal pellet volume changed significantly (p<0.05) between food concentrations for A. normani but not for S. cf. compacta (p>0.05). In order to investigate the effect of the phototrophic bacterial diet on the population dynamics of A. normani three groups of nauplii were maintained at 2 × 107 cells ml–1 and observed every day. The mortality of these nauplii was very high compared to those maintained on a diatom diet (Nitzschia constricta); only in one of the groups did some copepodites develop but no adults were ever observed. Adults fed on bacteria did not have different (p>0.05) survival rates compared to those fed on diatoms, nevertheless, the number of nauplii produced was significantly less (p<0.05) on the bacterial diet. These results lead us to suggest that although the phototrophic sulfur bacteria (Chromatium gracile) can be ingested by both copepod species it cannot sustain the full development of the A. normani population. Thus, a bloom of phototrophic sulfur bacteria does not seem to be a favourable situation for opportunistic benthic copepods to colonize eutrophic coastal lagoons after a dystrophic crisis.  相似文献

The copepod Temora stylifera was fed with the pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima for 15 days. This diatom does not produce polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) but only synthesizes other oxylipins such as the hydroxyacid (5Z,8Z,11Z,13E,15S,17Z)-15-hydroxy-5,8,11,13,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (15S-HEPE). Effects of this monoalgal diet were compared to copepods fed with the PUA-producing diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the control dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum which does not produce any oxylipins. Both egg production and hatching success were negatively affected by the two diatoms compared to the control diet. Both diatoms also induced malformations in the offspring, with the number of malformed nauplii increasing dramatically with time. Malformed nauplii were apoptotic (TUNEL-positive) indicating imminent death. In terms of recruitment, only 4 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with S. marinoi and 9 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with P. delicatissima were produced during the 15-day experimental period. The results indicate that P. delicatissima induced negative effects comparable to those of S. marinoi even though it did not produce PUAs. This is the first study that tests the biological activity of oxylipins other than PUAs on copepod reproduction.  相似文献

This study focuses on selective feeding by developmental stages of two oceanic copepods, Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicus from nauplii to adults. A mixture of four algal species of different biochemical composition, Prorocentrum nanum (dinoflagellate), Thalassiosira minima (diatom), Rhodomonas baltica (cryptophyte) and Dunaliella tertiolecta (chlorophyte), added in an equal biovolume, was used in three different experimental set-ups. In set-up 1 the algal species were present as single cells of similar size (14 μm). In set-up 2 the diatom T. minima was present in chains of two or three cells and was therefore larger than the other algae, while the biovolume of all species remained the same. In set-up 3, the diatom T. minima was excluded from the mixture. Feeding selectivity of the copepods was assessed in relation to the quality of the algal species expressed in terms of carbon and nitrogen content, fatty acid composition, and chain length of the diatom. The results show that younger stages and adult females of C. finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus did not show a preference for an algal species when the algae were of similar size. In the feeding experiments where the diatoms were offered as chains, both copepod species showed a selective behaviour only on the basis of algal size. Individual ingestion rates increased from 0.4 to 0.7 μg C day–1 for nauplii of both species to 5 μg C day–1 for adult females of C. helgolandicus to 12 μg C day–1 for C. finmarchicus. Individual filtration rates ranged from 5 ml day–1 for C. finmarchicus nauplii to 70–98 ml day–1 for adult females, and from 3 ml day–1 for C. helgolandicus nauplii to 35–46 ml day–1 for adult females. Ingestion and filtration rates per unit body carbon decreased gradually in both copepod species with increasing body carbon. The daily ingested amount of food decreased for C. finmarchicus from 124–134% of the body carbon for nauplii to 19% of the body carbon for adult females, and for C. helgolandicus from 117–137% of the body carbon for nauplii to 13–26% of the body carbon of adult females. This study presents a new chemical double‐marking technique for European glass eels Anguilla anguilla by combing alizarin red S (ARS) and strontium chloride hexahydrate (Sr). Marked eels (double marked with ARS and Sr, but also single marked with ARS) were exposed in situ to brackish water (15 g l?1 artificial sea salt) for 14 days and did not exhibit increased mortalities compared with unmarked eels. Indeed, no mortality occurred in a marked group during the experiments. Moreover, an efficient mass‐marking approach with low handling effort for both single ARS and double ARS‐Sr techniques is described and was proven to be practicable for large‐scale stocking programmes.  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding and growth rates of 1–3 wk old herring larvae from four different stocks were compared in laboratory experiments (8°C). For most of the larval groups, feeding rate was saturated at nauplii (Acartia tonsa, nauplii stages 3–5) densities over 301–1 (5 g d.w. 1–1). Specific growth rate increased asymptotically with nauplii density, and reached about 6% d–1 at densities over 120 nauplii 1–1. The growth rates attained in the laboratory were similar to field measured growth rates of similarly aged herring larvae at comparable food densities. Since food particles were homogenously distributed in the laboratory tanks, patches of dense plankton concentrations are, thus, apparently not necessary for larval growth and survival in the sea. Growth efficiency differed between larval groups, with large sized larvae being the most efficient in transforming ingested matter into growth. The difference probably relates to different sizes rather than to the different geographical origins of the larvae.  相似文献

By incorporating the free‐swimming nematode Turbatrix aceti into early feeding regimes of the European whitefish Coregonus maraena, the suitability of this nematode species was investigated as an alternative to Artemia nauplii. During a 14‐day feeding trial in a total of 25 aquaria each 1.7 L (each treatment n = 5, 255 larvae/tank) T. aceti was used either as the sole live food or in combination with Artemia nauplii or microdiet to determine the effect of T. aceti on growth performance and survival rate of C. maraena. By analysing the fatty acid composition of T. aceti prior to and after enrichment with INVE spresso® it was investigated whether the amount of n3‐polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3‐PUFA) in T. aceti could be further enhanced. Supplementation of Artemia nauplii with T. aceti increased growth significantly within the first 5 days of rearing in comparison to the non‐supplemented food treatments (14.39 ± 0.15 mm compared to 13.44 ± 0.18 mm; mean ± SE). However, growth and survival of juvenile C. maraena on nematode‐supplemented Artemia nauplii did not differ significantly from non‐supplemented Artemia nauplii at the end of the 14‐day rearing period (15.22 ± 0.15 mm compared to 14.86 ± 0.24 mm). All feeding treatments containing Artemia nauplii showed significantly higher growth and lower mortality at the end of the experiment in comparison to diets containing only the microdiet or T. aceti or a combination thereof. The overall low performance of T. aceti alone can most likely be explained by an insufficient capacity of C. maraena to digest this nematode species efficiently. Enrichment with INVE spresso® successfully increased the proportion of DHA in the T. aceti tissue. The results reveal that T. aceti cannot be considered a full alternative to Artemia nauplii, at least not in the rearing of C. maraena, but might be a useful vector of essential fatty acids within the early rearing period of this and potentially other fish species when provided as live food along with Artemia nauplii.  相似文献

Nine types of live foods viz. L, S and SS morphotypes of Brachionus plicatilis sp. complex, first instar Artemia franciscana, Fabrea salina, Acartia tsuensis, Tigriopus japonicus, Diaphanosoma celebensis, Moina mongolica and a formulated feed of two sizes (400 and 700 μm) were used to observe feeding behaviour and growth of mangrove killifish, Kryptolebias marmoratus. Behavioural observations were made for one hour on days 0, 1, 5, and 10 after hatching. Focus, unsuccessful and successful attacks and vomit were noted. With rotifers L, S and SS types and newly hatched Artemia nauplii as food, all the larvae showed maximum feeding success throughout the experimental period. Larvae did not consume any of the 700 μm artificial diet. Vomiting was noticed on capturing the ciliate Fabrea and 400 μm artificial diets. Rotifers were ingested in greater numbers. SS-type rotifers were consumed in largest number (209.2/h per individual) on day 10. Significantly greater growth was observed after 10 days rearing with L type rotifer, Artemia nauplii, T. japonicus, A. tsuensis, M. mongolica, D. celebensis, and a mixture of L type rotifer and F. salina (Tukey–Kramer post hoc test, P < 0.05). Feed selectivity experiments on days 0, 1, 5 and 10 revealed that killifish larvae feed preferentially on Artemia nauplii and rotifers from a mixture of Artemia nauplii, rotifers, A. tsuensis, T. japonicus, D. celebensis and M. mongolica. Techniques for culturing various zooplankton at small-scales are also described.  相似文献

We determined in situ feeding rates of three co-occurring coastal mysid species using [methyl-3H]-thymidine-labelled algal detritus (Lessonia corrugata), NaH14CO3-labelled phytoplankton (Isochrysis galbana) and zooplankton (Artemia sp. nauplii). All three species showed a wide and overlapping range of feeding rates on the three food types, suggesting they were broadly omnivorous. However, selectivity studies often showed a strong preference for animal prey. Although there was an overlap in the types of food the mysids ingested, some degree of feeding niche partitioning was demonstrated. Paramesopodopsis rufa tended to be more carnivorous, Tenagomysis tasmaniae fed least on zooplankton and phytoplankton, and largely on algal detritus, and Anisomysis mixta australis ingested few zooplankters, and moderate amounts of algal detritus and phytoplankton. The zooxanthellate octocoral Sinularia flexibilis is a producer of potential pharmaceutically important metabolites such as antimicrobial and cytotoxic substances. Controlled rearing of the coral, as an alternative for commercial exploitation of these compounds, requires the study of species-specific growth requirements. In this study, phototrophic vs. heterotrophic daily energy demands of S. flexibilis was investigated through light and Artemia feeding trials in the laboratory. Rate of photosynthetic oxygen by zooxanthellae in light (≈200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) was measured for the coral colonies with and without feeding on Artemia nauplii. Respiratory oxygen was measured in the dark, again with and without Artemia nauplii. Photosynthesis–irradiance curve at light intensities of 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 showed an increase in photosynthetic oxygen production up to a light intensity between 100 and 200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. The photosynthesis to respiration ratio (P/R > 1) confirmed phototrophy of S. flexibilis. Both fed and non-fed colonies in the light showed high carbon contribution by zooxanthellae to animal (host) respiration values of 111–127%. Carbon energy equivalents allocated to the coral growth averaged 6–12% of total photosynthesis energy (mg C g 1 buoyant weight day 1) and about 0.02% of the total daily radiant energy. “Light utilization efficiency (ε)” estimated an average ε value of 75% 12 h 1 for coral practical energetics. This study shows that besides a fundamental role of phototrophy vs. heterotrophy in daily energy budget of S. flexibilis, an efficient fraction of irradiance is converted to useable energy.  相似文献

We examined the effects of UVB radiation on hatching success of eggs, survival of various naupliar and copepodite stages, and feeding and egg production of adult females of the brackish-water copepod, Sinocalanus tenellus, by exposure to varying doses of UVB irradiance in the laboratory. Artificial UVB radiation resulted in an increased mortality of eggs, nauplii and copepodites with increasing UVB doses. UVB induced damage was stage-specific with eggs being most susceptible (LD50= 4.1 kJ m–2 ) and adult females being least susceptible (LD50= 16.7 kJ m–2). Effects on feeding and egg production of adult females were significantly evident at UVB doses higher than 11.0 kJ m–2 and 7.0 kJ m–2, respectively. We also examined the photorepair response of eggs and various developmental stages in simultaneous irradiation of UVB and enhanced PAR. With enhanced PAR there was a considerable recovery against UVB damage, being higher for younger animals than older ones. In nature, however, solar UVB radiation may rarely cause appreciable damage to S. tenellus population due to optically high attenuation properties of their habitat waters.  相似文献

Littoral plankton communities have rarely been included in food web dynamics and predator/prey behavior studies of planktonic communities of fresh water ecosystems. Polyphemus pediculus, a typically littoral predaceous cladoceran, is common in lakes and ponds throughout the northern temperate zone.Diel clearance rates of Polyphemus were studied with a differential count method. A multi-chambered in situ feeding trap manipulated Polyphemus densities at three levels above the control ambient densities. Polyphemus generally selected small prey (Vorticella and Keratella) over large prey (nauplii) and more vulnerable prey (Conochilus and Polyarthra) over smaller prey with long protective structures (Kellicottia). Polyphemus clearance rates were inversely correlated with body volume of prey. Polyphemus clearance rates ranged from 4.2 to 4.5 ml h–1 for Keratella and Vorticella respectively to <1 ml h–1 for copepod nauplii. Selectivity coefficients were highest for small species, Vorticella and Keratella.  相似文献

The growth of river catfish Mystus nemurus (Cuvier & Valenciennes) larvae fed four isocaloric diets (4200 kcal kg?1) with different protein levels during weaning was determined. Diets containing 45, 50, 55, and 60% protein were formulated by linear programming using amino acid profiles based on that of 2‐day‐old river catfish larvae. Artificial diets were fed to the larvae beginning at day 5 after being initially fed Artemia nauplii for 4 days. The larvae thrived solely on artificial diets from day 8 to day 16. On the other hand, the control larvae were fed Artemia nauplii from day 1 to day 16. Results of the feeding trial showed that growth and survival of M. nemurus larvae given the diet containing 60% protein were high and comparable to those of the larvae given only live food (control). Larvae fed the 55% protein diet had significantly lower growth and survival than the larvae on the control and 60% diets but significantly higher growth and survival rates than did larvae fed with 45 and 50% protein diets. Carcass moisture and total lipids after 16 days of feeding did not differ significantly (P > 0.05), but body protein increased with increasing dietary protein. Body protein of the control larvae was similar to that of larvae given the 60% protein diet.  相似文献

Isethionic acid (2-hydroxyethane sulfonic acid) and floridoside (2-O-α-D-galactopyranosylglycerol) were extracted from the red alga, Grateloupia turuturu, and tested for anti-settlement activity against cyprid larvae of the tropical barnacle, Balanus amphitrite and for their toxicity to nauplius larvae. Isethionic acid was active for anti-settlement but had the disadvantage of being toxic to nauplius larvae. Floridoside was a potent inhibitor of cyprid settlement at non-toxic concentrations to nauplii (0.01 mg ml?1).  相似文献

Adult clover root weevil Sitona lepidus show a feeding preference for white clover Trifolium repens over red clover Trifolium pratense. The effects on S. lepidus of three red clover T. pratense lines, selected for high, medium, or low levels of the isoflavone formononetin in foliage, were compared in three experiments using white clover as a control. In a no‐choice slant board experiment, weevil larval weights were greater for larvae feeding on white clover roots than those feeding on roots of the red clovers. The effect of larval root herbivory on plant growth was similar for all four clovers. Following root herbivory, a large increase in root and shoot formononetin levels was observed in the high‐formononetin selection of red clover but little change in the low‐formononetin red clover. In a no‐choice experiment with sexually mature female adult weevils feeding on foliage of the four clovers, all the red clovers had increased weevil mortality. Female weevils eating the high‐formononetin red clover laid fewer eggs than weevils eating white clover. The red clover diet caused a large accumulation of abdominal fat and/or oil in the weevils, whereas weevils feeding on white clover did not accumulate fat/oil. When sexually immature adult weevils were given a choice of foliage from all four clovers, white clover was eaten preferentially, and the low‐formononetin red clover was preferred to the high‐formononetin red clover. The results suggest that formononetin and associated metabolites in red clover may act as chemical defences against adult S. lepidus and that distribution in forage legumes can be manipulated by plant breeding to improve root health.  相似文献

Synopsis Growth and survival of Colorado squawfish, Ptychocheilus lucius, larvae under fluctuating 18, 22, and 26° C (5° C diel fluctuations) and constant 18, 22, 26° C, and 30° C temperature conditions and ration size corresponding to 12.5, 28,64,142, 320 brine shrimp nauplii fish–1 day–1 determined from laboratory experiments. Growth was optimal at 31° C and high at temperatures of 26° C to 30° C, at the highest food abundance. Lowest growth was under lowest food rations and highest temperatures. Growth of Colorado squawfish larvae declined substantially at temperatures < 22° C. Neither growth nor survival was significantly different between fluctuating or constant regimes. Survival of Colorado squawfish larvae was highest (95%) at 26.2° C and 235 nauplii fish–1 day–1 and high at temperatures of 20 to 30° C with food abundance > 180 nauplii fish–1 day–1. Survival was lowest when food abundance was low and temperature was high. Highest mortality occurred more than 20 days after experiments began and mortalities occurred sooner in higher than lower temperatures. Colorado squawfish larvae denied food for 5, 10, or 15 d after first feeding could have begun (6 d), had survival greater than 87 % which was equivalent to continuously fed controls. Survival of fish denied food for 17.5 d after feeding could have begun declined from 84% before feeding to 57% after feeding. Point of no return was estimated between 17.5 and 20 d. Colorado squawfish have relatively high starvation resistance. Low, stable flows that simulate natural hydrographs may enhance growth, survival, and recruitment of early life stages of Colorado squawfish by increasing water temperature and food abundance in regulated rivers of the Colorado River basin.  相似文献
