C4 photosynthesis involves cell-to-cell exchange of photosyntheticintermediates between the Kranz mesophyll (KMS) and bundle sheath(BS) cells. This was believed to occur by simple diffusion throughplentiful plasmodesmatal (PD) connections between these celltypes. The model of C4 intermediates’ transport was elaboratedover 30 years ago and was based on experimental data derivedfrom measurements at the time. The model assumed that plasmodesmataoccupied about 3% of the interface between the KMS and BS cellsand that the plasmodesmata structure did not restrict metabolitemovement. Recent advances in the knowledge of plasmodesmatalstructure put these assumptions into doubt, so a new model ispresented here taking the new anatomical details into account. If one assumes simple diffusion as the sole driving force, thencalculations based on the experimental data obtained for C4grasses show that the gradients expected of C4 intermediatesbetween KMS and BS cells are about three orders of magnitudehigher than experimentally estimated. In addition, if one takesinto account that the plasmodesmata microchannel diameter mightconstrict the movement of C4 intermediates of comparable Stokes’radii, the differences in concentration of photosynthetic intermediatesbetween KMS and BS cells should be further increased. We believethat simple diffusion-driven transport of C4 intermediates betweenKMS and BS cells through the plasmodesmatal microchannels isnot adequate to explain the C4 metabolite exchange during C4photosynthesis. Alternative mechanisms are proposed, involvingthe participation of desmotubule and/or active mechanisms aseither apoplasmic or vesicular transport. Photorespiratory metabolism of the C3-C4 intermediate species Moricandia arvensis (L.) DC has been compared with that of the C3 species, Moricandia moricandioides (Boiss.) Heywood. Assays of glycollate oxidase (EC 1.1.3.1), glyoxylate aminotransferases (EC 2.6.1.4, EC 2.6.1.45) and hydroxypyruvate reductase (EC 1.1.1.29) indicate that the capacity for flux through the photorespiratory cycle is similar in both species. Immunogold labelling with monospecific antibodies was used to investigate the cellular locations of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39), glycollate oxidase, and glycine decarboxylase (EC 2.1.2.10) in leaves of the two species. Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase was confined to the stroma of chloroplasts and glycollate oxidase to the peroxisomes of all photosynthetic cells in leaves of both species. However, whereas glycine decarboxylase was present in the mitochondria of all photosynthetic cells in M. moricandioides, it was only found in the mitochondria of bundle-sheath cells in M. arvensis. We suggest that localized decarboxylation of glycine in the leaves of M. arvensis will lead to improved recapture of photorespired CO2 and hence a lower rate of photorespiration.Abbreviations kDa kilodalton - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate  相似文献

Summary The relative hydraulic conductivities of major and minor longitudinal veins, and the apoplastic permeability of the bundle sheaths surrounding all longitudinal and transverse veins were investigated in representatives of the C3, C4/NAD-ME, C4/NAD-ME/PCK intermediate, C4/PCK and C4/NADP-ME photosynthetic types. Using the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and measurements of tracheary element diameters, the number of elements in each vein type and the numbers of each vein type, we calculated that 87–99% of the water flow in a longitudinal direction would be expected to occur in the major veins. The permeability of the mestome sheaths and parenchymatous bundle sheaths surrounding the veins was tested using the negatively-charged, fluorescent dye, trisodium 3-hydroxy-5,8,10-pyrenetrisulfonate (PTS). This dye proved nontoxic to plant tissue at a concentration of 0.5%, according to a deplasmolysis test with onion epidermal strips. The PTS concentration achieved in the tested grass leaves was about 0.035%, well below the toxic limit. When a solution of PTS was fed to the leaves by means of a basal cut, the dye moved into the veins of all orders. From there, it moved outward into the surrounding tissues, indicating that the sheaths surrounding the veins of all orders in all species tested were permeable. Therefore, contrary to previous predictions based on structural observations and some tracer studies, bundle sheaths with suberized cell walls do not function as endodermal layers.  相似文献

In order to study the location of enzymes of photorespiration in leaves of the C3–C4 intermediate species Moricandia arvensis (L.). DC, protoplast fractions enriched in mesophyll or bundlesheath cells have been prepared by a combination of mechanical and enzymic techniques. The activities of the mitochondrial enzymes fumarase (EC 4.2.1.2) and glycine decarboxylase (EC 2.1.2.10) were enriched by 3.0- and 7.5-fold, respectively, in the bundle-sheath relative to the mesophyll fraction. Enrichment of fumarase is consistent with the larger number of mitochondria in bundle-sheath cells relative to mesophyll cells. The greater enrichment of glycine decarboxylase indicates that the activity is considerably higher on a mitochondrial basis in bundle-sheath than in mesophyll cells. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) activity was enriched by 5.3-fold and glutamate-dependent glyoxylate-aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.4) activity by 2.6-fold in the bundle-sheath relative to the mesophyll fraction. Activities of serine- and alanine-dependent glyoxylate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.45 and EC 2.6.1.4), glycollate oxidase (EC 1.1.3.1), hydroxypyruvate reductase (EC 1.1.1.81), glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) and phosphoribulokinase (EC 2.7.1.19) were not significantly different in the two fractions. These data provide further independent evidence to complement earlier immunocytochemical studies of the distribution of photorespiratory enzymes in the leaves of this species, and indicate that while mesophyll cells of M. arvensis have the capacity to synthesize glycine during photorespiration, they have only a low capacity to metabolize it. We suggest that glycine produced by photorespiratory metabolism in the mesophyll is decarboxylated predominantly by the mitochondria in the bundle sheath.Abbreviation RuBP ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is well documented that C(4) grasses have a shorter distance between longitudinal veins in the leaves than C(3) grasses. In grass leaves, however, veins with different structures and functions are differentiated: large longitudinal veins, small longitudinal veins and transverse veins. Thus, the densities of the three types of vein in leaves of C(3) and C(4) grasses were investigated from a two-dimensional perspective. METHODS: Vein densities in cleared leaves of 15 C(3) and 26 C(4) grasses representing different taxonomic groups and photosynthetic subtypes were analysed. KEY RESULTS: The C(4) grasses had denser transverse veins and denser small longitudinal veins than the C(3) grasses (1.9 and 2.1 times in interveinal distance), but there was no significant difference in large longitudinal veins. The total length of the three vein types per unit area in the C(4) grasses was 2.1 times that in the C(3) grasses. The ratio of transverse vein length to total vein length was 14.3 % in C(3) grasses and 9.9 % in C(4) grasses. The C(3) grasses generally had greater species variation in the vascular distances than the C(4) grasses. The bambusoid and panicoid C(3) grasses tended to have a denser vascular system than the festucoid C(3) grasses. There were no significant differences in the interveinal distances of the three vein types between C(4) subtypes, although the NADP-malic enzyme grasses tended to have a shorter distance between small longitudinal veins than the NAD-malic enzyme and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase grasses. CONCLUSIONS: It seems that C(4) grasses have structurally a superior photosynthate translocation and water distribution system by developing denser networks of small longitudinal and transverse veins, while keeping a constant density of large longitudinal veins. The bambusoid and panicoid C(3) grasses have a vascular system that is more similar to that in C(4) grasses than to that in the festucoid C(3) grasses.  相似文献

The quantum yield for CO2 uptake was measured in C3 and C4 monocot species from several different grassland habitats. When the quantum yield was measured in the presence of 21% O2 and 340 cm3 m-3 CO2, values were very similar in C3 monocots, C3 dicots, and C4 monocots (0.045–0.056 mole CO2 · mole-1 quanta absorbed). In the presence of 2% O2 and 800 cm3 m-3 CO2, enhancements of the quantum yield values occurred for the C3 plants (both monocots and dicots), but not for C4 monocots. A dependence of the quantum yield on leaf temperature was observed in the C3 grass, Agropyron smithii, but not in the C4 grass, Bouteloua gracilis, in 21% O2 and 340 cm3 m-3 CO2. At leaf temperatures between 22–25°C the quantum yield values were approximately equal in the two species.  相似文献

Summary We investigated the histochemistry and ultrastructure of the cell walls of mestome sheaths and parenchymatous bundle sheaths of ten species of grasses. The species surveyed included representatives from all the major photosynthetic types: C3-Bromus tectorum, Phalaris arundinacea; C4/NAD-ME-Eragrostis cilianensis, Panicum capillare; C4/NAD-ME/PCK-Bouteloua curtipendula; C4/PCK-Chloris gayana, Sporobolus elongatus; C4/NADP-ME-Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria glauca, Themeda triandra. All vein orders (designated here as major, minor and transverse) from mature leaves of each species were tested histochemically for lipids and phenols, and the majority of species were also examined with the electron microscope. A suberized lamella was detected ultrastructurally in at least some walls of major vein bundle sheath cells of all species examined. These lamellae were also present in some cells associated with the minor veins of the C3 species and in the minor and transverse veins of the C4/NADP-ME species. Histochemical tests for lipids and phenols consistently failed to differentiate this layer. Based on these tests, none of the vein orders in any species showed evidence of a Casparian band. In all suberized bundle sheaths, the compound middle lamella between cells with suberin lamellae is modified by the presence of phenols. These did not, however, confer resistance to acid digestion to the cell layer, in contrast to cell layers with Casparian bands. Therefore, although the mestome sheath has some features in common with the root endodermis (i.e. cells with a suberized lamella and thick, cellulosic walls which may be further modified), we could find no substantive anatomical or ultrastructural evidence for the presence of a Casparian band in any of the grass leaves investigated. The significance of these observations is discussed in the context of apoplastic permeability of these walls.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the fate of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) produced by decarboxylation of oxaloacetate during photosynthesis in the bundle sheaths of leaves of the PEP-carboxykinase C4 grass Spartina anglica Hubb. Mesophyll protoplasts and bundle sheath cells were separated enzymically and used to investigate activities and distributions of putative enzymes of the C4 cycle and the photosynthetic carbon metabolism of bundle sheath cells. The results indicate that neither conversion of PEP to pyruvate nor its conversion to 3-phosphoglycerate can account for all of the carbon flux through the C4 cycle during photosynthesis. It is likely, therefore, either that PEP moves directly from bundle sheath to mesophyll or that more than one pathway of regeneration of PEP is involved in the C4 cycle in this plant.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - Pi phosphate - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate  相似文献

Summary Two C3 grasses (Hordeum vulgare L., Avena sativa L.) and two C4 grasses (Panicum miliaceum L., Panicum crus-galli L.) were cultivated in standard soil in the open air in pure cultures and in various mixed cultures at low and high nitrogen fertilization levels. After three months the dry weight, length and nitrogen content of the aboveground and below-ground parts of the plants and the shoot/root ratios were determined. Hordeum vulgare was the most successful species irrespective of the nitrogen fertilization level, and also exhibited in most cases the highest nitrogen concentrations. Panicum miliaceum, on the other hand, was the species least able to compete. The production of biomass was reduced in cultures growing under nitrogen starvation conditions, this phenomenon being more pronounced with respect to the C4 than to the C3 species. The decrease in the production of biomass at low N conditions was most drastic with Panicum crus-galli, the species with the lowest nitrogen content and thus assumed to be best adapted to nitrogen starvation conditions. In cultures growing at low nitrogen fertilization levels the shoot/root ratios of all species.shifted in favour of an increasing root proportion. The extent of this shift, however, differed from species to species.  相似文献

To model the effect of increasing atmospheric CO2 on semi-arid grasslands, the gas exchange responses of leaves to seasonal changes in soil water, and how they are modified by CO2, must be understood for C3 and C4 species that grow in the same area. In this study, open-top chambers were used to investigate the photosynthetic and stomatal responses of Pascopyrum smithii (C3) and Bouteloua gracilis (C4) grown at 360 (ambient CO2) and 720 micro mol mol-1 CO2 (elevated CO2) in a semi-arid shortgrass steppe. Assimilation rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) at the treatment CO2 concentrations and at a range of intercellular CO2 concentrations and leaf water potentials (psileaf) were measured over 4 years with variable soil water content caused by season and CO2 treatment. Carboxylation efficiency of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Vc,max), and ribulose bisphosphate regeneration capacity (Jmax) were reduced in P. smithii grown in elevated CO2, to the degree that A was similar in elevated and ambient CO2 (when soil moisture was adequate). Photosynthetic capacity was not reduced in B. gracilis under elevated CO2, but A was nearly saturated at ambient CO2. There were no stomatal adaptations independent of photosynthetic acclimation. Although photosynthetic capacity was reduced in P. smithii growing in elevated CO2, reduced gs and transpiration improved soil water content and psileaf in the elevated CO2 chambers, thereby improving A of both species during dry periods. These results suggest that photosynthetic responses of C3 and C4 grasses in this semi-arid ecosystem will be driven primarily by the effect of elevated CO2 on plant and soil water relations.  相似文献

In C4 grasses belonging to the NADP-malic enzyme-type subgroup, malate is considered to be the predominant C4 acid metabolized during C4 photosynthesis, and the bundle sheath cell chloroplasts contain very little photosystem-II (PSII) activity. The present studies showed that Flaveria bidentis (L.), an NADP-malic enzyme-type C4 dicotyledon, had substantial PSII activity in bundle sheath cells and that malate and aspartate apparently contributed about equally to the transfer of CO2 to bundle sheath cells. Preparations of bundle sheath cells and chloroplasts isolated from these cells evolved O2 at rates between 1.5 and 2 mol · min–1 · mg–1 chlorophyll (Chl) in the light in response to adding either 3-phosphoglycerate plus HCO 3 or aspartate plus 2-oxoglutarate. Rates of more than 2 mol O2 · min–1 · mg–1 Chl were recorded for cells provided with both sets of these substrates. With bundle sheath cell preparations the maximum rates of light-dependent CO2 fixation and malate decarboxylation to pyruvate recorded were about 1.7 mol · min–1 · mg–1 Chl. Compared with NADP-malic enzyme-type grass species, F. bidentis bundle sheath cells contained much higher activities of NADP-malate dehydrogenase and of aspartate and alanine aminotransferases. Time-course and pulse-chase studies following the kinetics of radiolabelling of the C-4 carboxyl of C4 acids from 14CO2 indicated that the photosynthetically active pool of malate was about twice the size of the aspartate pool. However, there was strong evidence for a rapid flux of carbon through both these pools. Possible routes of aspartate metabolism and the relationship between this metabolism and PSII activity in bundle sheath cells are considered.Abbreviations DHAP dihydroxyacetone phosphate - NADP-ME(-type) NADP-malic enzyme (type) - NADP-MDH NADP-malate dehydrogenase - OAA oxaloacetic acid - 2-OG 2-oxoglutarate - PEP phosphoenolpyruvate - PGA 3-phosphoglycerate - Pi orthophosphate - Ru5P ribulose 5-phosphate  相似文献

Summary The growth and photosynethetic responses to atmospheric CO2 enrichment of 4 species of C4 grasses grown at two levels of irradiance were studied. We sought to determine whether CO2 enrichment would yield proportionally greater growth enhancement in the C4 grasses when they were grown at low irradiance than when grown at high irradiance. The species studied were Echinochloa crusgalli, Digitaria sanguinalis, Eleusine indica, and Setaria faberi. Plants were grown in controlled environment chambers at 350, 675 and 1,000 l 1-1 CO2 and 1,000 or 150 mol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). An increase in CO2 concentration and PPFD significantly affected net photosynthesis and total biomass production of all plants. Plants grown at low PPFD had significantly lower rates of photosynthesis, produced less biomass, and had reduced responses to increases in CO2. Plants grown in CO2-enriched atmosphere had lower photosynthetic capacity relative to the low CO2 grown plants when exposed to lower CO2 concentration at the time of measurement, but had greater rate of photosynthesis when exposed to increasing PPFD. The light level under which the plants were growing did not influence the CO2 compensation point for photosynthesis.  相似文献

The C(4) photosynthetic pathway involves the assimilation of CO(2) by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and the subsequent decarboxylation of C(4) acids. The enzymes of the CO(2) concentrating mechanism could be affected under water deficit and limit C(4) photosynthesis. Three different C(4) grasses were submitted to gradually induced drought stress conditions: Paspalum dilatatum (NADP-malic enzyme, NADP-ME), Cynodon dactylon (NAD-malic enzyme, NAD-ME) and Zoysia japonica (PEP carboxykinase, PEPCK). Moderate leaf dehydration affected the activity and regulation of PEPC in a similar manner in the three grasses but had species-specific effects on the C(4) acid decarboxylases, NADP-ME, NAD-ME and PEPCK, although changes in the C(4) enzyme activities were small. In all three species, the PEPC phosphorylation state, judged by the inhibitory effect of L: -malate on PEPC activity, increased with water deficit and could promote increased assimilation of CO(2) by the enzyme under stress conditions. Appreciable activity of PEPCK was observed in all three species suggesting that this enzyme may act as a supplementary decarboxylase to NADP-ME and NAD-ME in addition to its role in other metabolic pathways.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Species having C4 photosynthesis belonging to the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEP-CK) subtype, which are found only in family Poaceae, have the most complex biochemistry among the three C4 subtypes. In this study, biochemical (western blots and immunolocalization of some key photosynthetic enzymes) and structural analyses were made on several species to further understand the PEP-CK system. This included PEP-CK-type C4 species Urochloa texana (subfamily Panicoideae), Spartina alterniflora and S. anglica (subfamily Chloridoideae), and an NADP-ME-type C4 species, Echinochloa frumentacea, which has substantial levels of PEP-CK. KEY RESULTS: Urochloa texana has typical Kranz anatomy with granal chloroplasts scattered around the cytoplasm in bundle sheath (BS) cells, while the Spartina spp. have BS forming long adaxial extensions above the vascular tissue and with chloroplasts in a strictly centrifugal position. Despite some structural and size differences, in all three PEP-CK species the chloroplasts in mesophyll and BS cells have a similar granal index (% appressed thylakoids). Immunolocalization studies show PEP-CK (which catalyses ATP-dependent decarboxylation) is located in the cytosol, and NAD-ME in the mitochondria, in BS cells, and in the BS extensions of Spartina. In the NADP-ME species E. frumentacea, PEP-CK is also located in the cytosol of BS cells, NAD-ME is very low, and the source of ATP to support PEP-CK is not established. CONCLUSIONS: Representative PEP-CK species from two subfamilies of polyphyletic origin have very similar biochemistry, compartmentation and chloroplast grana structure. Based on the results with PEP-CK species, schemes are presented with mesophyll and BS chloroplasts providing equivalent reductive power which show bioenergetics of carbon assimilation involving C4 cycles (PEP-CK and NAD-ME, the latter functioning to generate ATP to support the PEP-CK reaction), and the consequences of any photorespiration.  相似文献

Effects of flooding on the activities of some enzymes of activated oxygen metabolism, the levels of antioxidants, and lipid peroxidation in senescing leaves of tobacco were investigated. As judged by the decrease in chlorophyll and protein levels, flooding accelerated the senescence of tobacco leaves. Total peroxide and the lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde, increased in both control and flooding-treated leaves with increasing duration of the experiment. Throughout the duration of the experiment, flooded leaves had higher levels of total peroxide and malondialdehyde than did control leaves. Flooding resulted in an increase in peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase activities and a reduction of superoxide dismutase activity in the senescing leaves. Glycolate oxidase, catalase, and glutathione reductase activities were not affected by flooding. Flooding increased the levels of total ascorbate and dehydroascorbate. Total glutathione, reduced form glutathione, or oxidized glutathione levels in flooded leaves were lower than in control leaves during the first two days of the experiment, but were higher than in control leaves at the later stage of the experiment. Our work suggests that senescence of tobacco induced by flooding may be a consequence of lipid peroxidation possibly controlled by superoxide dismutase activity. Our results also suggest that increased rates of hydrogen peroxide in leaves of flooded plants could lead to increased capacities of the scavenging system of hydrogen peroxide.Abbreviations GSH reduced form glutathione - GSSG oxidized form glutathione - GSSG reductase glutathione reductase - MDA malondialdehyde - SOD superoxide dismutase  相似文献

Glycolate oxidase (EC 1.1.3.15) activity was detected both in the bundle sheath (79%) and mesophyll (21%) tissues of maize leaves. Three peaks of glycolate oxidase activity were separated from maize leaves by the linear KCl gradient elution from the DEAE-Toyopearl column. The first peak corresponded to the glycolate oxidase isoenzyme located in the bundle sheath cells, the second peak had a dual location and the third peak was related to the mesophyll fraction. The mesophyll isoenzyme showed higher affinity for glycolate (Km 23 micromol x L(-1)) and a higher pH optimum (7.5-7.6) as compared to the bundle sheath isoenzyme (Km 65 micromol x L(-1), pH optimum 7.3). The bundle sheath isoenzyme was strongly activated by isocitrate and by succinate while the mesophyll isoenzyme was activated by isocitrate only slightly and was inhibited by succinate. It is concluded that although the glycolate oxidase activity is mainly attributed to the bundle sheath, conversion of glycolate to glyoxylate occurs also in the mesophyll tissue of C4 plant leaves.  相似文献

Light, besides initiating primary photochemical processes, alters the redox state of soluble components in chloroplast. The present review attempts to cover the mechanism of reductive photoactivation of enzymes of photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle using key enzymes as examples. The reduced soluble components — ferredoxin, thioredoxin and NADPH, in turn, cause the reduction of disulphides to dithiols of chloroplastic enzymes. NADP-malate dehydrogenase is subject to activation by light through changes in NADPH/NADP. The key enzyme of C4 photosynthesis-PEP carboxylase, though cytosolic, has been shown to be activated by disulphide/sulphhydryl interconversion by reductants generated in light through chloroplast electron transport flow. PyruvateP i dikinase activity is controlled by the adenylate energy charge. It remains unclear how light controls the activation of cytosolic enzymes.  相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that C4 grasses are inferior to C3 grasses as host plants for herbivorous insects by measuring the relative performance of larvae of a graminivorous lepidopteran, Paratrytone melane (Hesperiidae), fed C3 and C4 grasses. Relative growth rates and final weights were higher in larvae fed a C3 grass in Experiment I. However, in two additional experiments, relative growth rates and final weights were not significantly different in larvae fed C3 and C4 grasses. We examined two factors which are believed to cause C4 grasses to be of lower nutritional value than C3 grasses: foliar nutrient levels and nutrient digestibility. In general, foliar nutrient levels were higher in C3 grasses. In Experiment I, protein and soluble carbohydrates were digested from a C3 and a C4 grass with equivalent efficiencies. Therefore, differences in larval performance are best explained by higher nutrient levels in the C3 grass in this experiment. In Experiment II, soluble carbohydrates were digested with similar efficiencies from C3 and C4 grasses but protein was digested with greater efficiency from the C3 grasses. We conclude (1) that the bundle sheath anatomy of C4 grasses is not a barrier to soluble carbohydrate digestion and does not have a nutritionally significant effect on protein digestion and (2) that P. melane may consume C4 grasses at compensatory rates.  相似文献

Introduced African grasses are invading Neotropical savannas and displacing the native herbaceous community. This work, which is part of a program to understand the success of the African grasses, specifically investigates whether introduced and native grasses differ in their water relations. The water relations of the native Trachypogon plumosus and the successful invader Hyparrhenia rufa were studied in the field during two consecutive years in the seasonal savannas of Venezuela. The two C4 grasses differed clearly in their responses to water stress. H. rufa consistently had higher stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, leaf water and osmotic potential and osmotic adjustment than the native T. plumosus. Also, leaf senescence occurred much earlier during the dry season in H. rufa. Both grasses showed a combination of water stress evasion and tolerance mechanisms such as stomatal sensitivity to atmospheric or soil water stress, decreased transpiring area and osmotic adjustment. Evasion mechanisms are more conspicuous in H. rufa whereas T. plumosus is more drought tolerant and uses water more conservatively. The evasion mechanisms and oportunistic use of water by H. rufa, characteristic of invading species, contribute to, but only partially explain, the success of this grass in the Neotropical savannas where it displaces native plants from sites with better water and nutrient status. Conversely, the higher water stress tolerance of t. plumosus is consistent with its capacity to resist invasion by alien grasses on shallow soils and sites with poorer nutrient and water status.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The success of C4 plants lies in their ability to attain greater efficiencies of light, water and nitrogen use under high temperature, providing an advantage in arid, hot environments. However, C4 grasses are not necessarily less sensitive to drought than C3 grasses and are proposed to respond with greater metabolic limitations, while the C3 response is predominantly stomatal. The aims of this study were to compare the drought and recovery responses of co-occurring C3 and C4 NADP-ME grasses from the subfamily Panicoideae and to determine stomatal and metabolic contributions to the observed response.

Methods

Six species of locally co-occurring grasses, C3 species Alloteropsis semialata subsp. eckloniana, Panicum aequinerve and Panicum ecklonii, and C4 (NADP-ME) species Heteropogon contortus, Themeda triandra and Tristachya leucothrix, were established in pots then subjected to a controlled drought followed by re-watering. Water potentials, leaf gas exchange and the response of photosynthetic rate to internal CO2 concentrations were determined on selected occasions during the drought and re-watering treatments and compared between species and photosynthetic types.

Key Results

Leaves of C4 species of grasses maintained their photosynthetic advantage until water deficits became severe, but lost their water-use advantage even under conditions of mild drought. Declining C4 photosynthesis with water deficit was mainly a consequence of metabolic limitations to CO2 assimilation, whereas, in the C3 species, stomatal limitations had a prevailing role in the drought-induced decrease in photosynthesis. The drought-sensitive metabolism of the C4 plants could explain the observed slower recovery of photosynthesis on re-watering, in comparison with C3 plants which recovered a greater proportion of photosynthesis through increased stomatal conductance.

Conclusions

Within the Panicoid grasses, C4 (NADP-ME) species are metabolically more sensitive to drought than C3 species and recover more slowly from drought.  相似文献
