Studies of mating behaviour have assumed that individuals are at greater risk when paired than when engaged in other activities. Recently, four experimental studies of insects and crustaceans have tested this assumption using predators from divergent taxa. Three of these studies indicate that mating carries no additional risk to the participants. Indeed, the findings suggest decreased vulnerability, relative to other activities, due to decreased predation on one or the other of the mating pair.  相似文献

The world faces two enormous challenges that can be met, at least in part and at low cost, by making certain changes in agricultural practices. There is need to produce enough food and fibre for a growing population in the face of adverse climatic trends, and to remove greenhouse gases to avert the worst consequences of global climate change. Improving photosynthetic efficiency of crop plants can help meet both challenges. Fortuitously, when crop plants’ roots are colonized by certain root endophytic fungi in the genus Trichoderma, this induces up-regulation of genes and pigments that improve the plants’ photosynthesis. Plants under physiological or environmental stress suffer losses in their photosynthetic capability through damage to photosystems and other cellular processes caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). But certain Trichoderma strains activate biochemical pathways that reduce ROS to less harmful molecules. This and other mechanisms described here make plants more resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses. The net effect of these fungi’s residence in plants is to induce greater shoot and root growth, increasing crop yields, which will raise future food production. Furthermore, if photosynthesis rates are increased, more CO2 will be extracted from the atmosphere, and enhanced plant root growth means that more sequestered C will be transferred to roots and stored in the soil. Reductions in global greenhouse gas levels can be accelerated by giving incentives for climate-friendly carbon farming and carbon cap-and-trade programmes that reward practices transferring carbon from the atmosphere into the soil, also enhancing soil fertility and agricultural production.  相似文献

Analysis of a recently validated fragmentation index, named ‘coherence’, shows a direct relationship with the Simpson and Shannon indices. Since these diversity metrics are also denoted as ‘entropy metrics’, it can be accepted that patch size heterogeneity can adequately be described by an entropy metric. Since both indices are used to determine the entropy of a sample, the Brillouin index should be applied instead to correctly determine the entropy of a landscape pattern, this because this latter index is developed for fully censused data sets, such as landscapes when a complete coverage by cartographic data or imagery is available. Calculation of the Brillouin entropy index for three specific sites located in Cadiz Township (USA), the Poole Basin (Dorset, UK) and Sao Paulo State (Brazil), respectively, and using long-term data of patch size diversity, reveals increasing entropy levels associated with anthropogenic land cover dynamics (fragmentation). The observed entropy trends defy the laws of thermodynamics and signal the impact of human action on landscape integrity.  相似文献

Increasing evidence suggests the toxicity of intracellular amyloid β-protein (Aβ) to neurons, as well as the involvement of oxidative stress in Alzheimer disease (AD). Here we show that normobaric hyperoxia (exposure of cells to 40% oxygen for five days), and consequent activation of macroautophagy and accumulation of Aβ within lysosomes, induced apoptosis in differentiated SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Cells under hyperoxia showed: (1) increased numbers of autophagic vacuoles that contained amyloid precursor protein (APP) as well as Aβ monomers and oligomers, (2) increased reactive oxygen species production, and (3) enhanced apoptosis. Oxidant-induced apoptosis positively correlated with cellular Aβ production, being the highest in cells that were stably transfected with APP Swedish KM670/671NL double mutation. Inhibition of γ-secretase, prior and/or in parallel to hyperoxia, suggested that the increase of lysosomal Aβ resulted mainly from its autophagic uptake, but also from APP processing within autophagic vacuoles. The oxidative stress-mediated effects were prevented by macroautophagy inhibition using 3-methyladenine or ATG5 downregulation. Our results suggest that upregulation of macroautophagy and resulting lysosomal Aβ accumulation are essential for oxidant-induced apoptosis in cultured neuroblastoma cells and provide additional support for the interactive role of oxidative stress and the lysosomal system in AD-related neurodegeneration.  相似文献

Muscle strain is one of the most common injuries, resulting in a decreased range of motion (ROM) in this group of muscles. Systematic stretching over a period of time is needed to increase the ROM. The purpose of this study was to determine if whole-body vibration (WBV) training would have a positive effect on flexibility training (contract-release method) and thereby on the ROM of the hamstring musculature. In this study, 19 undergraduate students in physical education (12 women and 7 men, age 21.5 +/- 2.0 years) served as subjects and were randomly assigned to either a WBV group or a control group. Both groups stretched systematically 3 times per week for 4 weeks according to the contract-release method, which consists of a 5-second isometric contraction with each leg 3 times followed by 30 seconds of static stretching. Before each stretching exercise, the WBV group completed a WBV program consisting of standing in a squat position on the vibration platform with the knees bent 90 degrees on the Nemes Bosco system vibration platform (30 seconds at 28 Hz, 10-mm amplitude, 6 times per training session). The results show that both groups had a significant increase in hamstring flexibility. However, the WBV group showed a significantly larger increase (30%) in ROM than did the control group (14%). These results indicate that WBV training may have an extra positive effect on flexibility of the hamstrings when combined with the contract-release stretching method.  相似文献

Vegetation dynamics in rangelands and other ecosystems are known to be mediated by topoedaphic properties. Vegetation monitoring programs, however, often do not consider the impact of soils and other sources of landscape heterogeneity on the temporal patterns observed. Ecological sites (ES) comprise a land classification system based on soil, topographic, and climate variations that can be readily applied by land managers to classify topoedaphic properties at monitoring locations. We used a long-term (>40 y) vegetation record from southeastern Arizona, USA to test the utility of an ES classification for refining interpretations of monitoring data in an area of relatively subtle soil differences. We focused on two phenomena important to rangeland management in the southeastern Arizona region: expansion of the native tree velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina Woot.) and spread of the introduced perennial grass Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana Nees). Specifically, we sought to determine if a quantitative, ES-specific analysis of the long-term record would (1) improve detection of changes in plant species having heightened ecological or management importance and (2) further clarify topoedaphic effects on vegetation trajectories. We found that ES class membership was a significant factor explaining spatiotemporal variation in velvet mesquite canopy cover, Lehmann lovegrass basal cover, and Lehmann lovegrass density measurements. In addition, we observed that the potential magnitude of velvet mesquite and Lehmann lovegrass increases varied substantially among ES classes. Our study brings attention to a practical land management tool that might be called upon to increase the effectiveness of vegetation-based indicators of ecosystem change.  相似文献

The following objectives were set out to study the effect of EEG α power increase training on the heart rate variability (HRV) as an index of the autonomic regulation of cognitive functions: (1) to establish the interrelation between a voluntary increase in the α power in the individual upper α band and the HRV and related characteristics of cognitive and emotional spheres; (2) to determine the nature of the relationship between the α-activity indices and HRV depending on the resting α-frequency EEG pattern; and (3) to study how the individual α-frequency EEG pattern is reflected in the HRV changes as a result of biofeedback training. Psychometric indices of cognitive performance and the characteristics of EEG α activity and HRV were recorded in 27 healthy men 18–34 years of age before, during, and after ten training sessions of a voluntary increase in α power in the individual upper α band with the eyes closed. To determine the biofeedback effect in the α power increase training, the data of two groups were compared: the experimental, with a real biofeedback (14 subjects), and the control, with a sham biofeedback (13 subjects). The follow-up effect of the training was assessed one month after its end. The results showed that α biofeedback training increased the resting α frequency, improved cognitive performance, reduced psychoemotional stress, and increased HRV only in the subjects with a low baseline α frequency. In the subjects with a high baseline resting α frequency, the α biofeedback training had no effect on the resting α power and cognitive performance but reduced the HRV (judging by the pNN 50 parameter). The positive correlation between the α peak frequency and HRV in subjects with initially low α frequency and the negative correlation in the subjects with a high baseline α frequency explains the opposite biofeedback effects on HRV in subjects with low and high α frequency. From the theoretical standpoint, the results of this study contribute to understanding the mechanisms of heart-brain neurovisceral relationships and their effect on the cognitive performance. From the applied standpoint, they suggest that EEG biofeedback can be used for improving autonomic regulation in healthy subjects and the development of individual approaches to the development of the biofeedback technology, which can be used both in clinical practice for treatment and rehabilitation of psychosomatic syndromes and in educational training.  相似文献

The success of ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) restocking in Asturias, northern Spain was assessed, and the role of parasites and predators in the mortality of released birds was studied. The experimental release of 56 radio-tagged pheasants showed that 98% of birds died within 12 days. As soon as 72 h after release, 67.5% of males and 55.0% of females were found dead. Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) killed 63% of the birds. The survival of those birds killed by foxes was lower than for birds which died due to other causes, and pheasants depositing eggs of the nematode Eucoleus contortus (Creplin, 1839) survived less than those apparently non-parasitized. No impact of the parasite on the pheasants' condition was found, but foxes preyed upon parasitized birds more than expected by random. The results suggest that: (i) the current pheasant releases in this area are unsuccessful and need to be improved; (ii) this is mainly due to intense predation by red foxes; and (iii) parasites could have some influence on the predation of released birds by foxes. However, the way parasites affect pheasant vulnerability remains unclear.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the poorly understood effects of co-culturing of two white rot fungi on the production of lignin-degrading enzyme activities. Four species, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Physisporinus rivulosus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Pleurotus ostreatus were cultured in pairs to study the degradation of aspen wood and the production of lignin-degrading enzymes. Potential of co-culturing for biopulping was evaluated. Chemical analysis of decayed aspen wood blocks showed that co-culturing of C. subvermispora with P. ostreatus could significantly stimulate wood decay, when compared to monocultures. Based on the fungi tested here, however, this effect is species-specific. Other combinations of fungi were slightly stimulating or not stimulatory. The pattern of lignin degradation was altered towards the acid insoluble part of lignin especially in co-cultures where P. ostreatus was included as a partner. The use of agar plates containing the polymeric dye Poly R-478 showed elevated dye decolourization at the confrontation zone between mycelia. Laccase was significantly stimulated only in the co-culture of P. ostreatus with C. subvermispora. Manganese peroxidase activity was stimulated in co-cultures of P. ostreatus with C. subvermispora or with P. rivulosus. Immunoblotting indicated changes in lignin-degrading enzymes and/or their isoform composition in response to co-culturing. This is the first report on the effects of co-culturing of potential biopulping fungi on wood degradation, and gives basic knowledge on fungal interactions during wood decay that can be utilized in practical applications.  相似文献

Does climatic warming increase the risk of frost damage in northern trees?   总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3  
Abstract. The effect of climatic warming on the timing of bud burst and the subsequent risk of frost damage on trees in central Finland was assessed with the aid of a computer model, 73 years of temperature data and a climatic scenario corresponding to doubled level of atmospheric CO2. In general, climatic warming hastened bud burst, due to ontogenetic development during warm spells in autumn, winter and spring. During the years with the warmest winters in the scenario conditions: (a) bud burst took place during mid-winter; and (2) depending on the year, the trees were subsequently exposed to temperatures between −27 and −10°C. This finding suggests that the risk of frost damage to trees will be increased if the predicted climatic warming occurs. Because of the assumptions used in the model, the results are not conclusive, but they do point out the importance of further experimental studies on genetic and environmental regulation of timing of bud burst in trees.  相似文献

Generally, dragonflies and damselflies (odonates) are considered aquatic invertebrates. However, the ecological requirements of their adults are not different from those of fully, terrestrial insects. Surprisingly, there is a very little information on whether the management and structure of surrounding habitats has any influence on the diversity and seasonal dynamics of odonates. This is important to know because recently, a large proportion of freshwater habitats in Central Europe have becomes surrounded by intensively managed habitats. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different types of terrestrial habitats on their long-term utilization by dragonflies and damselflies. I assumed that this pattern varied over time; therefore, I used generalized additive mixed models to analyze the effects of management on seasonal changes in the abundance of individuals in terrestrial environments. From my results, it was evident that the management practices of surrounding terrestrial habitats had a significant impact on the population dynamics of dragonflies. The abundance of dragonfly adults in surrounding terrestrial habitats increased toward the end of the season. However, this was only, when the natal aquatic habitat was not affected by fish farming and was able to supply surrounding terrestrial habitats with offspring. This was evidenced by the fact that, compared to areas with extensive water management, in sites with fish farming, seasonal increases in abundance was negligible. There is no doubt that the structure of surrounding terrestrial habitats has a significant influence on the diversity of terrestrial invertebrates. However, we must not forget that terrestrial habitats, regardless of their management, are not able to replace the poor quality of the aquatic (natal) habitat. Interestingly, the abundance of damselflies decreased toward the end of the season, regardless of the management practices of the surrounding areas. This indicates that their dynamics is more controlled by time stress or other similar mechanisms than that of dragonflies.  相似文献

The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) has been considered as an important indicator of fitness in terrestrial ectotherms since long. It is actually an equivalent to the instantaneous growth rate of the exponential equation for describing the density-independent population growth. In terrestrial ectotherms, rm has been demonstrated to be temperature-dependent. The temperature at which rm was maximal, was considered to be the “optimal” temperature for fitness in Amarasekare and Savage (2012), but this definition needs further analysis. Only rm cannot provide thorough representation of fitness. Because body size can affect the competitive abilities in many terrestrial ectotherms, both population size and body size should be considered in measuring the fitness of ectotherms. The rule of “bigger is better” requires relatively low temperature to increase in body size, whereas relatively high temperature is required for a rapid increase in population size. Thus, there is presumably a trade-off in temperature for adjusting individual body size and population size to achieve maximum fitness. We hypothesized that this temperature could be reflected by the intrinsic optimum temperature for developmental rate in the Sharpe–Schoolfield–Ikemoto model, and it led to a temperature estimate around 20 °C. However, the traditional viewpoint based on the temperature corresponding to the maximal intrinsic rate of increase provides a temperature estimate around 30 °C. This study suggests that a low temperature around 20 °C might authentically represent the optimal ambient temperature for fitness in terrestrial ectotherms. It implies that thermal biologists who are interested in the effect of temperature on the fitness in terrestrial ectotherms should pay more attention to their performance at low temperature rather than high temperature.  相似文献

The occurrence of large burnt areas has increased considerably in southern Europe in recent years. In order to design management plans to prevent large wildfires while preserving biodiversity, understanding of the ways in which birds respond to these fires is required. We investigated the spatial variability of both avifauna and habitat structure in three zones: unburnt, burnt in 1982, and burnt in 1994. The habitat structure of the unburnt zone was the most variable spatially. However, bird species composition between sampling points was very homogeneous in space. In contrast, the bird communities inhabiting burnt zones were more spatially heterogeneous. This pattern was caused by distinct specific responses to variations in habitat structure. Open-space species responded to small changes in habitat structure with large changes in local abundance, whereas the response of forest species to these structural variations was much less. We suggest that land managers should select specific zones with limited vegetation recovery within large burnt areas and maintain them as open space to keep combustibility low and provide an appropriate habitat for several open space species that are of conservation concern.  相似文献

The ability to regulate the rates of metabolic processes in response to changes in the internal and/or external environment is a fundamental feature which is inherent in all organisms. This adaptability is necessary for conserving the stability of the intercellular environment (homeostasis) which is essential for maintaining an efficient functional state in the organism. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes is an important process which establishes from the complex interaction between the host plant and microorganism. This process is widely believed to be regulated by the host plant nitrogen demand through a whole plant N feedback mechanism in particular under unfavorable conditions. This mechanism is probably triggered by the impact of shoot-borne, phloem-delivered substances. The precise mechanism of the potential signal is under debate, however, the whole phenomenon is probably related to a constant amino acid cycling within the plant, thereby signaling the shoot nitrogen status. Recent work indicating that there may be a flow of nitrogen to bacteroids is discussed in light of hypothesis that such a flow may be important to nodule function. Large amount of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are cycled through the root nodules of the symbiotic plants. In this paper some recent evidence concerning the possible role of GABA in whole-plant-based upregulation of symbiotic nitrogen fixation will be reviewed.Key words: γ-aminobutyric acid, nitrogen fixation, nodule, symbiosis, translocation, signalingNitrogen (N) is major limiting nutrient for the growth of most plant species in different ecosystems. Acquisition and assimilation of N is second in importance only to photosynthesis for plant growth and development. Elemental N is a key constituent of protein, nucleic acids and other vital cellular components. Most plants acquire N from the soil solution either as nitrate or ammonium ions. In addition, some plants can utilize the atmospheric gaseous nitrogen pool through symbiotic associations with species of bacteria, cyanobacteria or actinomycetes that contain the N2 fixing enzyme, nitrogenase. Clearly, the crucial role that symbiotic plants play in plant growth requires that physiologists understand the biochemical and molecular events that regulate fixation and subsequent metabolism of nitrogen.Symbiotic N2 fixation is an important process for increasing the plant available N and thereby the growth capacity of legumes. This process results from the complex interaction between the host plant and microorganism.1 The host plant provides the microorganism with carbon and a source of energy for growth and functions while the microorganism fixes atmospheric N2 and provides the plant with a source of reduced nitrogen in the form of ammonium. An adequate supply of carbohydrates is an essential requirement of nodule functioning as N2 fixation is expensive in terms both of energy and carbon for the synthesis of N-products. Sucrose synthesized in photosynthesis and exported to the nodules via the phloem, is the primary fuel for N2 fixation.2 Sucrose can be metabolized in the cytoplasm of infected, uninfected or interstitial cells with organic acids as the end products. Malate is strongly believed to be the major respiratory substrate for bacteroids.3 This dicarboxylic acid is the major energy source for the bacteroids and plant mitochondria, and is used for NH4+ assimilation as carbon skeleton in the glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase (GS/GOGAT) pathway.4 The products of symbiotic N2 fixation are exported from the nodules to the rest of the host plant where they are incorporated into essential macro-molecules such as amino acids, proteins that drive plant growth, development and yields. According to the fixation products, root nodules are generally divided into two major groupings:1 (1) indeterminate nodules that are elongate-cylindrical activity that transport fixed N as amides such as alfalfa, pea and clover; and (2) determinate nodules that are spherical with determinate internal meristematic activity that transport fixed N as ureides, such as soybean and common bean. The complex series of events leading to the formation and functioning of the fixation machinery required controlled coordinated expression of both bacterial and host plant genes.  相似文献

Low fertility among nomadic !Kung foragers of the northern Kalahari Desert of Botswana has been hypothesized to be an adaptation to scarcity of food. However, a comparison of !Kung fertility before and after a transition to a more sedentary lifestyle indicates that more food did not increase fertility. An examination of the fertility of neighboring sedentary Bantu-speaking Herero pastoralists during the same period also indicates that low female reproductive rates in this region are not unique to the !Kung. Herero fertility has increased dramatically in recent decades, probably in response to the control of sexually transmitted diseases in northwestern Botswana. More food appears to have substantially increased !Kung reproductive success by reducing infant and child mortality rates to levels observed among the Herero. These findings suggest that low !Kung fertility and mortality reflect contact with the Herero, who began expanding in large numbers into !Kung territory in the 1950s. This study emphasizes the need for a more rigorous comparative perspective in anthropology to understand better the significance of findings from restricted populations, and I suggest that evolutionary ecology would benefit from shifting some of its current focus on fertility to mortality.  相似文献

We tested if root colonisation by ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) could alter the susceptibility of Norway spruce (Picea abies) seedlings to root rot infection or necrotic foliar pathogens. Firstly, spruce seedlings were inoculated by various EMF and challenged with Heterobasidion isolates in triaxenix tubes. The ascomycete EMF Meliniomyces bicolor, that had showed strong antagonistic properties towards root rot causing Heterobasidion in vitro, protected spruce seedlings effectively against root rot. Secondly, spruce seedlings, inoculated with M. bicolor or the forest humus, were subjected to necrotrophic foliar pathogens in conventional forest nursery conditions on peat substrates. Botrytis cinerea infection after winter was mild and the level of needle damage was independent of substrate and EMF colonisation. Needle damage severity caused by Gremminiella abietina was high in seedlings grown in substrates with high nutrient availability as well as in seedlings with well-established EMF communities. These results show that albeit M. bicolor is able to protect spruce seedlings against Heterobasidion root rot in axenic cultures it fails to induce systemic protection against foliar pathogens. We also point out that unsterile inoculum sources, such as the forest humus, should not be considered for use in greenhouse conditions as they might predispose seedlings to unintended needle damages.  相似文献

Summary Wheat seedlings were grown under a 14-hour photoperiod and the first leaves excised at the end of the eighth dark period. The effect of treatments causing wilting on the inhibitor- content of such leaves was studied.When leaves were rapidly wilted (i.e. to a 6% fresh weight loss) and extracted immediately, the amount of inhibitor- per leaf was found to be the same as in fresh turgid leaves. However, when the leaves were maintained in a wilted condition in darkness for a period of 110 minutes, there was a marked increase in inhibitor- content.The greater the degree of wilting (i.e. up to about a 9% loss in fresh weight) the greater the eventual inhibitor- content. Moreover, the increment in inhibitor- was shown to be temperature dependent.The time lapse requirement and the temperature dependency of the inhibitor- formation suggest an enzymic conversion from a precursor.If a similar phenomenon occurs during the wilting of intact plants then the increase in this growth inhibitor might play a role in some of the physiological changes which accompany water stress.  相似文献

We studied the effect of heat shock and wood-fueled smoke on the emergence of native and exotic plant species in soil samples obtained in an evergreen shrubland of central Chile, located on the eastern foothills of the Coastal Range of Lampa. Immediately after collection samples were dried and stored under laboratory condition. For each two transect, 10 samples were randomly chosen, and one of the following treatments was applied: 1) Heat-shock treatment. 2) Plant-produced smoke treatment. 3) Combined heat-and-smoke treatment. 4) Control, corresponding to samples not subjected to treatment. Twenty-three species, representing 12 families, emerged from the soil samples. The best-represented families were Poaceae and Asteraceae. All of the emerged species were herbs, 21 were annuals, and 14 were exotic to Chile. Fire-related triggers used in this study did not increase the emergence and/or abundance of exotic species with respect to natives in soil samples. Interestingly, this study provides evidence that heat-shock can increase the emergence of native herbs.  相似文献
