Detailed sedimentological analyses and sequential and cyclostratigraphic interpretations in the Kimmeridgian of the Swiss Jura and the Vocontian Basin lead to a high-resolution correlation from the platform to the basin where the biostratigraphy is well established. Several orders of depositional sequences are defined. Their duration is estimated from the time frame given in the sequence-chronostratigraphic chart of Hardenbol et al. (1998). It is suggested that an elementary sequence formed in tune with the 20 ky precession cycle. Small-scale and medium-scale sequences correspond to the 100 and 400 ky eccentricity cycles, respectively. The platform-to-basin correlation shows that the composition of the hemipelagic and pelagic deposits depends to a large part on cyclical variations of carbonate production in shallow-marine environments and subsequent export to the basin. The distribution of thick versus thin marl-limestone alternations and carbonate-dominated versus marl-dominated intervals observed in the basinal sections is explained by the superposition of high- and low-frequency sea-level changes that controlled the carbonate productivity on the platform and the export potential of carbonate mud to the basin.  相似文献

In Late Jurassic times, the Swiss Jura carbonate platform occupied the transition between the Paris Basin and the Tethys and thus connects the Boreal and Tethyan realm. Up to now, the lack of index fossils in the Reuchenette Formation prevented a reliable correlation between both areas (its sediments are characterised by a prominent sparseness of index fossils). Now, seven recently in situ collected species of ammonites helped to establish a new sequence-stratigraphical frame for the platform sediments of the Reuchenette Formation in NW Switzerland. Based on biostratigraphical data, five third-order sedimentary sequences were assigned to the Late Oxfordian to Late Kimmeridgian. The upper three third-order sequences correspond to the Boreal sequences Kim3–5 of Hardenbol et al. (1998). The deduced large-scale sea-level fluctuations match those from other European regions (Spain, Russia). This biostratigraphically based sequence-stratigraphical frame is a prerequisite to refine correlations within a wider area covering the Swiss Jura and parts of adjacent France and Germany. The Asmari Formation, a thick carbonate succession of the Oligo-Miocene in Zagros Mountains (southwest Iran), has been studied to determine its microfacies, paleoenvironments and sedimentary sequences. Detailed petrographic analysis of the deposits led to the recognition of 10 microfacies types. In addition, five major depositional environments were identified in the Asmari Formation. These include tidal flat, shelf lagoon, shoal, slope and basin environmental settings and are interpreted as a carbonate platform developed in an open shelf situation but without effective barriers separating the platform from the open ocean. The Asmari carbonate succession consists of four, thick shallowing-upward sequences (third-order cycles). No major hiatuses were recognized between these cycles. Therefore, the contacts are interpreted as SB2 sequence boundary types. The Pabdeh Formation, the deeper marine facies equivalent of the Asmari Limestone is interpreted to be deposited in an outer slope-basin environment. The microfacies of the Pabdeh Formation shows similarities to the Asmari Formation.  相似文献

Four gastropod genera are newly recorded from Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Qayen area, Eastern Iran. Based on the paleoecological interpretation of the faunal assemblage and especially on the newly identified gastropods, a shallow temperate marine environment is suggested for the fossil-bearing carbonate rocks. The gastropod assemblage shows a typically Tethyan composition comparable to those already reported from the Caucasus and Eastern Europe.  相似文献

Examination of modern gastropod associations from the low intertidal zone of Isla Santa Cruz suggests that fossil rocky intertidal deposits from this tropical locality will be taphonomically compromised in three ways: (1) Marine hermit crabs, by their use of empty gastropod shells, will mix the shells from varying tidal heights and habitats, thus facilitating mixed associations of such shells in the fossil record, (2) encrusting organisms on crab-inhabited shells are abundant, while boring organisms are almost non-existent, indicating possible differences in postmortem shell retention, and (3) intertidal shells are further taphonomically altered by terrestrial hermit crabs, which transport the shells onto land as well as physically modify the shells. Gastropod fossils from beach and terrace deposits on Isla Santa Fe are interpreted to be a mixed assemblage of rocky intertidal assemblage with few shells indicating influence from marine hermit crabs. Modification of the shell by marine and terrestrial hermit crabs was also evident. A unique polish to the shells at one locality is attributed to the marine iguanas and is only found in the terrace site biologically bulldozed by egg-laying iguanas. Few studies exist on modern rocky intertidal associations in the Galápagos, and the fossil record of rocky shores may provide a baseline for future studies in how community structure has changed over since the advent of humans. Summary Extensive tidal areas of the Recent coast of southern Tunisia are overgrown by microbial mats. Different mat types of which each are dominated by distinct and well adapted cyanobacterial species develop. Ecological response of the mat-forming microorganisms to climatological hydrological and sedimentological factors produce characteristic sedimentary structures (=microbially induced sedimentary structures). A suecession of Pleistocene rocks crops out near the lagoon El Bibane, southern Tunisia. The stratigraphic section comprises structures that we regard as fossil equivalents to those microbially induced structures we observe in the Recent coastal area. Preservation of the structures is result of lithification of the microbial mats. This we conclude from fossil filaments of cyanobacteria visible within the rock matrix. The Recent microbially induced sedimentary structures indicate facies zones within the modern tidal environment. Comparison of the Recent structures with the fossil analogues recorded in the stratigraphic section aids to identify the same distinct facies zones within the Pleistocene coastal environment also. Erosion by water currents forms step-like cliffs, and the microbial mat is undermined and ripped off piece by piece. shallows within the supratidal area are overgrown by copious microbial mats comprising structures like biolaminites and—varvites, as well as polygons of cracks. The features originate from effects triggered by seasonal variations of climate. Tufts and reticulate pattern of bulges indicate supernatant water films covering the mat surfaces. Morphologically higher parts of the Recent tidal area are overgrown by single-layered mats forming petees, induced by microbial mat growth and evaporitive pumping. The study demonstrates that microbially induced sedimentary structures can be used to reconstruct small-scaled facies zones within coastal environments. The Maastrichtian shallow-water carbonate platform (Tarbur Formation) is described from outcrop in southwest Iran. It is characterised by eight microfacies types, which are dominated by larger foraminifera, rudist debris and dasycladacean algae. They are grouped into four distinct depositional settings: tidal flat, lagoon, barrier and open marine. The depositional settings include stromatolitic boundstone of tidal flat, peloidal dasycladacean miliolids wackestone and peloid bioclastic imperforate foraminifera wackestone of restricted lagoon, Omphalocyclus miliolids bioclast packstone–grainstone and miliolids intraclast bioclast packstone–grainstone of open lagoon, rudist bioclast grainstone of inner-platform shoals and rudist bioclast floatstone–rudstone and bioclastic wackestone of open-marine environments.

The facies and faunal characters are typical of a ramp-like open shelf. The lack of reef-constructing organisms resulted in a gently dipping ramp morphology for the margin and slope. On the basis of facies analysis, three depositional sequences (third order) are defined.  相似文献

The Late Precambrian Porsanger Dolomite Formation, occurring beneath the Varanger tillite in Arctic Norway, consists of various dolomitic lithofacies of subtidal, intertidal and supratidal environments. The lithofacies belong to three facies associations, A, B and C, which are repeated several times in the sequence. Facies association A comprises cryptalgal laminites, dolomicrites and thin-bedded grainstones and flakestones. The environment represented by this facies is broadly intertidal (locally supratidal) flat, with the interbedded carbonate sands representing storm deposits. Facies association B, of shallow subtidal to low intertidal origin, comprises cross-bedded carbonate sands (flakestones, grainstones and oolites) forming units up to 10 m thick. Small stromatolite bioherms (5 m wide, 2 m high) are locally developed within these “high-energy” deposits. Facies association C formed in a subtidal environment consists of laterally extensive (over 20 km) uniformly developed stromatolite biostromes, up to 16 m thick. The biostromes, locally divided by channels filled with grainstones and intraformational conglomerates, are composed of cylindrical and turbinate columnar (SH-V and SH-C) and digitate stromatolites (Gymnosolen, Inseria and Tungussia) in their lower parts. Larger, bulbous (SH-C and LLH-C) and conical (Conophyton) stromatolites occur in the upper parts, as well as the branching conophyte, Jacutophyton.All of the biostromes are always developed above cross-bedded carbonate sands (facies association B). A broadly symmetrical cyclic pattern, A B C B A, of tidal flat deposits (facies association A) passing up into carbonate sands (B), into biostrome (C), overlain by carbonate sands (B) and then tidal flat deposits (A), is repeated four times in the Porsanger Dolomite sequence. The pattern is interpreted in terms of two controls on sedimentation: (1) a slow transgressive phase followed by (2) depositional regression. The former (1) took place either through eustatic sea-level rise or more likely through accelerated subsidence because of tectonic instability and compaction of underlying sediments. This resulted in the sequence: tidal flat sediments, low intertidal/shallow subtidal carbonate sands, subtidal biostrome (A, B, C). The newly recognized Konservat-Lagerstätte of Ettling (Bavaria), field site of the Jura-Museum Eichstätt (JME), is unique among Late Jurassic plattenkalk basins (Solnhofen region) in its abundant, extremely well preserved fossil vertebrates, almost exclusively fishes. We report actinopterygians (ginglymodins, pycnodontiforms, halecomorphs, aspidorynchiforms, “pholidophoriforms,” teleosts); turtles; and non-vertebrates (echinoderms, arthropods, brachiopods, mollusks, jellyfish, sponges, biomats, plants) in a current faunal list. Ettling has yielded several new fish species (Bavarichthys incognitus; Orthogonikleithrus hoelli; Aspidorhynchus sanzenbacheri; Macrosemimimus fegerti). Upper and lower Ettling strata differ in faunal content, with the lower dominated by the small teleost Orthogonikleithrus hoelli (absent from the upper layers, where other prey fishes, Leptolepides sp. and Tharsis sp., occur instead). Pharyngeal and stomach contents of Ettling fishes provide direct evidence that Orthogonikleithrus hoelli was a primary food source during early Ettling times. Scarcity of ammonites and absence of vampyromorph coleoids at Ettling differ markedly from the situation at other nearby localities in the region (e.g., Eichstätt, Painten, Schamhaupten, the Mörnsheim beds), where they are more common. Although the exact biochronological age of Ettling remains uncertain (lack of suitable index fossils), many Ettling fishes occur in other plattenkalk basins of Germany (e.g., Kelheim) and France (Cerin) dated as Late Kimmeridgian to Early Tithonian (eigeltingense horizon), suggesting a comparable geologic age. The Ettling deposits represent an independent basin within the larger Upper Jurassic “Solnhofen Archipelago”, a shallow subtropical sea containing scattered islands, sponge-microbial and coral reefs, sandbars, and deeper basins on a vast carbonate platform along the northern margin of the Tethys Ocean.  相似文献

Nerineoid shell beds are described for the first time from Lower Cretaceous deposits of southern South America. These come from carbonates near the top of the Agrio Formation in southern Mendoza Province, west‐central Argentina. To envisage the origin of the nerineoid shell beds, a taphonomic study was carried out, which indicated that these represent within‐habitat time‐averaged, primary sedimentological concentrations with a secondary biogenic imprint related to a relatively high local production of nerineoid shells. The associated palaeoenvironments were studied through a facies analysis of the carbonate succession including the shell beds. The carbonates were deposited in a homoclinal ramp system and depict a shallowing upward trend from mid to inner ramp. The individuals lived and accumulated in oolitic shoals within the inner ramp, in a shallow, well‐lit, high‐energy setting above fair‐weather wave base. Substrate was oxygenated and loose. The nerineoids are shown to belong to one species of the genus Eunerinea, and through the functional morphology of the shells they are tentatively interpreted as infaunal or semi‐infaunal. It is suggested that the recorded monospecific nerineoid shell beds indicate that the palaeoenvironmental conditions may have been favourable for the development of abundant populations of these gastropods in the northern part of the Neuquén Basin during a short time interval in the Hauterivian–Barremian boundary. A 19 m thick package of well-sorted lowermost Jurassic (Hettangian-Lower Sinemurian?) sandstones within the Shemshak Formation of the southeastern Alborz Mountains displays features characteristic of foreshore to upper shoreface environments such as tabular bedding, low-angle lamination, trough cross-stratification, parting lineation, and oscillation ripples. In contrast to most other beach successions recorded in the literature the sandstones contain a trace fossil assemblage characterised by low abundance but comparatively high diversity. The assemblage, comprising 14 ichnotaxa, is dominated by Palaeophycus heberti, Rhizocorallium irregulare, Gyrochorte comosa, and Parahaentzschelinia surlyki. Contrary to predictions, which assume a dominance of suspension-feeders in such high-energy environments, the trace fossil assemblage represents a variety of ethological groups ranging from suspension-feeders to deposit-feeders, detritus-feeders, scavengers, and a possible trap constructor (Ctenopholeus), whereby deposit-feeders predominate. This anomaly is explained by a high amount of organic detritus in the sediment, indicated by abundant plant material, and a position of the beach in the vicinity of a river mouth.  相似文献

The Tale-Zang Formation in Zagros Mountains (south-west Iran) is a Lower to Middle Eocene carbonate sequence. Carbonate sequences of the Tale-Zang Formation consist mainly of large benthic foraminifera (e.g. Nummulites and Alveolina), along with other skeletal and non-skeletal components. Water depth during deposition of the formation was determined based on the variation and types of benthic foraminifera, and other components in different facies. Microfacies analysis led to the recognition of ten microfacies that are related to four facies belts such as tidal flat, lagoon, shoal and open marine. An absence of turbidite deposits, reefal facies, gradual facies changes and widespread tidal flat deposits indicate that the Tale-Zang Formation was deposited in a carbonate ramp environment. Due to the great diversity and abundance of larger benthic foraminifera, this carbonate ramp is referred to as a “foraminifera-dominated carbonate ramp system”. Based on the field observations, microfacies analysis and sequence stratigraphic studies, three third-order sequences in the Langar type section and one third-order sequence in the Kialo section were identified. These depositional sequences have been separated by both type-1 and type-2 sequence boundaries. The transgressive systems tracts of sequences show a gradual upward increase in perforate foraminifera, whereas the highstand systems tracts of sequences contain predominantly imperforate foraminifera.  相似文献

Summary The Late Jurassic epicontinental sea of South Germany protruded far to the North forming a wide bay which was rimmed by shallow-water platforms (Swiss and French Jura). This wide shelf is characterized by extensive downslope mud accumulations including siliceous sponge buildups. The bioherms are aligned along the more pericontinental parts of this shelf, which graded to the South into the Helvetic Basin of the Tethys Ocean. Five sedimentary cycles of Oxfordian to Middle Kimmeridgian age (ox. 2–ox. 3, ki.1.–ki.1.2, ki.3, ki.1.3–ki.2.1, ki. 2.1–ki. 2.2) were used for interregional correlation. Each cycle is characterized by a vertical suite from marl to pure limestone. The bases of the marls are characterized by abundant open-marine fossils, glauconite and phosphate (fish teeth and pellets) and interpreted as condensed sections. Deepening is indicated by bioherms changing their growth form before demise from large structures into small isolated buildups, which commonly occur within deeper water. Sequence boundaries, are present at the transition from marl into limestone. Two phases (middle ki. 1.3 and ki. 1/2) of debris-flow deposition, one accompanied by the sudden spreadout of biostromes and basinward shift of bioherms, are interpreted as lowstand phases associated with sequence boundaries. The remaining sedimentary cycles described here lack such lowstand deposits. Instead, corresponding positions in the cycles are characterized by omission features. This problem is still unresolved. It may either be due to sediment trapping on the ramp or to a changing origin of the cycles compared. It is proposed here that highstand sediments, having higher contents of fine-grained siliciclastics than lowstand deposits, formed during a humid and warm climate with high rates of continued runoff and sediment transport. Lowstand deposits consist of pure offbank carbonates, because the associated drier climate reduced fluvial input of terrigenous material. Corresponding patterns of climatic change are also seen in platform sediments from the Swiss Jura Range; however, climatic cycles correlate with eustatic sea level fluctuations in only about 50% of the cases. This misfit may partially result from problems with biostratigraphic correlation (boreal— Tethyan). Small-scale sedimentary cycles with an average duration of 66’000 years (Mutabilis chron, ki. 2) to 95’000 years (Planula chron, ox. 3) provide a tool for detailed stratigraphic correlation in biostromes, small scale lenticular bioherms (1–2 m thickness) and large bedded bioherms (many tens of metres thickness). Interruptions of bioherm growth are due to temporal oxygen deficiency related to plankton blooms. The bathymetrically deepest bioherms-small and lenticular in shape—therefore suffered the highest number of ecological break-downs, whereas massive bioherms continuously remained above the critical level.  相似文献

The Lower Cretaceous Fahliyan Formation, part of the Khami Group, unconformably overlies the Hith Formation and is conformably overlain by the Gadvan Formation in the study area in southern Iran. The Fahliyan Formation is a reservoir rock in Zagros Basin. This formation was investigated by a detailed petrographic analysis in order to clarify the depositional facies and sedimentary environment in the Kuh-e Siah Anticline in Boushehr Province. Petrographic studies led to the recognition of 25 microfacies that were deposited in four facies belts: tidal flat, lagoon, and shoal in inner ramp and shallow open-marine in mid-ramp environment. An absence of turbidite deposits, reefal facies, and gradual facies changes indicate that the Fahliyan Formation was deposited on a carbonate ramp. Calcareous algae and benthic foraminifera are abundant in the shallow marine carbonates of the Fahliyan Formation. These skeletal grains have been studied in order to increase the understanding of their distributions in time and space. A total of ten genera belonging to different groups of calcareous algae and 16 genera of benthic foraminifera are recognized from the Fahliyan Formation at Kuh-e Siah section.  相似文献

Summary The Vendian-Cambrian interval on the Siberian Platform contains thick carbonate and evaporite sequences formed in extensive shallow-water basins. The carbonate sequences are characterized by a cyclic composition. Finegrained dolomites, undulated algal dolomites, flat pebble conglomerates, storm breccias and solution-collapse breccias form the base of each cycle. These rocks are characterized by an increased clay content which can be high enough to form argillites. Short sedimentation breaks reflected by mudcracks or silicification horizons are present as well as small cross-bedded tidal channels. Peloidal grainstones with algal overgrowth dominate in the central parts of the cycles. These members are often recrystallized and dolomitized. Micritic dolomites, undulous laminated dolomites, storm breccias and columnar stromatolites with abundant mud cracks form the upper members of the cycles. These sequences are free of clay but contain abundant anhydrite crystals and nodules. In the uppermost parts of some cycles massive layered anhydrite beds are present. The cycles vary in thickness, but usually they are between 15 and 20 m thick. The lower cycle member documents extreme shallow-water deposits. They formed in tidal and partially also supratidal zones not far from the mainland, from where fine clayey material was washed in. These parts of the sequence reflect a slow transgression. The central member of a cycle was deposited during the maximal transgression in a shallow basin with normal salinity and rather active hydrodynamics. Sedimentation of the upper part of the cycles reflects a regression stage (tidal and especially sabkha environments). The final layered anhydrite beds formed most probably in relict lakes on the sabkha plain. During sea-level falls some sequences of the central parts of the cycles were subaerially exposed and underwent partial dolomitization. The Vendian-Cambrian sabkhas are partly comparable with their recent counterparts.  相似文献

Exposed limestone cliffs in the Swiss Jura Mountains harbour a diverse gastropod community with some rare species. Sport climbing has recently increased in popularity on these cliffs. We examined the effects of sport climbing and microtopographical features of rock faces on terrestrial gastropods by assessing species diversity and abundance on climbing routes and in unclimbed areas of seven isolated cliffs in the Northern Swiss Jura Mountains. We considered exclusively living individuals resting attached to rock faces. In total, 19 gastropod species were recorded. Six of them were specialized rock-dwelling species, whose individuals spend their entire life on rock faces, feeding on algae and lichens. Plots along climbing routes harboured fewer species of rock-dwelling snails as well as other gastropod species (usually living in the leaf litter layer at the cliffs’ base) than plots in unclimbed control areas. Similarly, both the density of individuals and frequency of occurrence in plots were reduced in both groups of snails on climbing routes. The complexity of the rock surface had little influence on the species richness and abundance of gastropods. Pyramidula pusilla, the species with the smallest shell and a preference to rest underneath overhangs, was less affected by sport climbing than snail species with larger shells and a preference to rest on exposed smooth rock surface. Our findings indicate land snail diversity and abundance are suitable indicators for impact assessment in rocky habitats. Future management plans and actions should therefore not only rely on plants; they ought to consider also gastropods and other invertebrates. Any management plan should include a comprehensive information campaign to show the potential impact of intensive sport climbing on the specialized flora and fauna with the aim of educating the climbers and increasing their compliance with such measures.  相似文献

Summary During the 1960's and the 1970's the Liedena Sandstone was a type deposit for “flysch-like facies” (sandstone and lutite alternations) of coastal sedimentary systems. However, the depositional system of these beds was never accurately defined. The sedimentological analysis along 100 km of outcrops in the western part of the South Pyrenean Zone (Navarre) allows these peculiar facies to be assigned to a mixed intertidal flat. Furthermore, sandy beach facies, different types of heterolithic, backbarrier deposits and conglomeratic, fluviatile facies have been recognized associated with these intriguing deposits. Generally, a northwestward-facing barrier-island system or wave-dominated delta was the likely depositional environment. The benthic foraminiferal assemblage in the intertidal deposits exhibits the typical characteristics of a marginal marine environment: extremely high dominance of one species (Pararotalia inermis), low species diversity, and a hyaline dominance with discrete amounts of miliolids. Furthermore, the most abundant species indicates that the Liedena Sandstone was deposited during the Late Eocene. Abundant footprints of aquatic birds are known in the tidal flat deposits. Six morphotypes have been distinguished: two (types 1 and 2) are ciconiforme-like; type 1 is here assigned to a new ichnotaxon,Leptoptilostipus pyrenaicus and is one of the oldest occurrences of Ciconiiforme-like ischmites in the fossil record. Two other morphotypes (5 and 6) are similar to those of the Charadriiformes and are refeered to asCharadriipeda. Finally, the affinities of the two remainder morphotypes (3 and 4) are unclear, they could have been made by Charadriiformes. Synsedimentary tectonic activity controlled the evolution of the depositional system, as the area of deposition of the Liedena Sandstone was progressively incorporated into the active thrust sheets of the Pyrenean Orogen during the Late Eocene. The structural uplift and the large amount of sediments derived from the adjacent highlands induced progradation of the depositional system and the definitive retreat of the sea from the South Pyrenean Zone.  相似文献

Shallow-marine Kimmeridgian (Late Jurassic) deposits in the Lower Saxony Basin (LSB) composed of alternating limestone, marl and claystone attract great palaeontological interest due to their rich invertebrate and vertebrate assemblages. Unfortunately, the absence of open-marine marker fossils and numerous sedimentary gaps in combination with lateral facies changes hamper the precise stratigraphic correlation of these strata on both a local and global scale. Here, an integrated approach combining carbonate microfacies analysis, ostracod biostratigraphy and high-resolution sequence stratigraphy is applied to two Kimmeridgian sections (Langenberg and Bisperode, 60 km apart) in the southeastern LSB. High-resolution carbonate microfacies analysis enables the definition of 19 microfacies types and seven microfacies associations, which can be arranged into facies belts along a carbonate ramp. Vertical microfacies, bed thickness and diagnostic surfaces define stacking patterns that are interpreted as small-, medium- and large-scale sequences. The ostracod biostratigraphic framework established in this study provides the required stratigraphic control. Correlation of the two studied sections reveals a more proximal setting for Bisperode than Langenberg and an overall shallowing-up trend from mid-ramp to proximal inner ramp developed in both sections. Furthermore, the majority of the medium-scale sequence boundaries defined in this study can be found in similar biostratigraphic positions in other European basins. Many marine gastropods are characterized by determinate growth, as inferred from the presence of unique terminal elaborations of the shell's aperture. Although determinate growth has evolved repeatedly in most major gastropod clades, it is especially frequent among siphonate caenogastropods. Analyses of shallow-water assemblages show that the incidence of species with determinate growth is far higher in the tropics (especially the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans) than at higher latitudes. Compilations of fossil assemblages from warm-water environments indicate that, although determinate growth occurred in some Palaeozoic gastropods, it became widespread only in the Neogene. In some groups, terminal apertural elaborations arose in lineages whose growth was more or less continuous and indeterminate, but in others it was derived either from or was ancestral to episodic growth. The hypothesis that periodic or terminal apertural elaborations evolved as a means to dispose of calcium carbonate once growth in the spiral direction ceased is rejected in favour of functional interpretations. Among the latter, the roles of modified apertures in defence and in mate recognition are explored, but no firm conclusion regarding the latter possibility can be drawn owing to our ignorance of mate recognition in gastropods.  相似文献

To explore the utility of gravel-sized tests of large benthic foraminifers (LBFs) as practical paleoenvironmental indicators of tropical reef and shelf carbonate environments, depth and spatial distributions of gravel-sized empty tests of LBFs were examined using 39 surface sediment samples collected from depths shallower than 200 m off the west coast of Miyako Island (Ryukyu Islands, northwest Pacific). Distributions of the LBF tests were mainly related to water depth, topography, and substrate type. Q-mode cluster analysis based on the binary (presence/absence) data of LBF associations (4–2-mm size fraction) clearly delineates four depositional environments: bay, back reef to fore reef, flat shelf, and shelf slope. Application of this modern dataset to fossil LBF data from larger foraminiferal limestones of the Pleistocene Ryukyu Group indicate that a test section was deposited in an outer flat shelf at depths between 54 and 99 m. Comparisons of these results with previous reports suggest that our foraminiferal analysis using gravel-sized tests is methodologically easier than conventional analyses including smaller sized tests to distinguish similar levels of depositional environments. However, taxonomic and environmental similarities make the applicability of this dataset to fossil LBF data from Quaternary tropical carbonate environments in the northwest Pacific.  相似文献
