This study examined how forest edges, fruit display size, and fruit colour influenced rates of seed dispersal in an endemic, bird-dispersed, New Zealand mistletoe species, Alepis flavida. To examine rates of seed dispersal, fruit removal rates were compared between plants growing on forest edges and in forest interior, and also between two morphs of plants with different coloured fruits. Two aspects of fruit display size were examined: plant size and the neighbourhood of conspecific plants. There was no overall difference in fruit removal rates on forest edges and in forest interior, but birds removed fruits from red-fruited plants at a faster rate than from orange-fruited plants. Proximity of plant neighbours interacted with edges to influence fruit removal rates. The smaller the distance to nearest neighbours, the greater the fruit removal rates for orange-fruited plants in both habitats, but this relationship was significant for red-fruited plants only in the interior. Plant size affected fruit removal rates for orange-fruited plants, but not for red-fruited plants, and these differences were consistent in both habitats. Thus, fruit colour had the strongest effects on rates of fruit removal in this system, but forest edges also affected fruit removal rates, via altering the effects of neighbouring plants. Although birds prefer red fruits, there appears to be little selection pressure against orange-fruited plants because fruit removal rates are very high for both morphs.  相似文献

通过实地调查,对厦门地区冬季观果和观花园林植物进行统计,分析其生活型、观赏特征、色彩和应用频度。结果表明,厦门冬季具有观赏价值的观果植物有20科22属25种(含种下等级),观花植物有33科51属63种(含种下等级)。厦门冬季观果植物以常绿乔木、灌木为主,果色以红色系为主,高应用频率的观果植物优势不明显;观花植物以乔木为主,花色以红色系、黄色系为主,高应用频率的观花植物优势明显,开花呈衬式花相的种类占多数。厦门冬季观果与观花植物资源较为丰富,但冬季表现较好的观果种类较少,而一些表现较好的植物未普遍应用,植物景观营造不合理,针对此问题提出改善厦门冬季植物配置的建议。  相似文献

We investigated factors affecting seed rain beneath nine fleshy-fruited fruiting plant species growing in a 1-ha plot of planted Pinus thunbergii in central Japan. We tested whether the numbers of seeds and seed species dropped by birds beneath fruiting plants were correlated with the number of fruits removed by birds from the plants. Most of fruiting plant species with high fruit removal had significantly high seed rain. Both the numbers of seeds and seed species dropped were significantly, positively correlated with the number of fruits removed across for all fruiting plant species. Therefore, fruit removal predicted the difference among heterospecific fruiting plants in seed rain. We also tested whether the number of fruits removed from fruiting plants by birds was related with fruit crop size, fruit size, and height of the plants, and the numbers of fruits and fruit species of neighboring plants near the plants. Most of fruiting plant species with high fruit crop size had significantly high fruit removal. The number of fruits removed was significantly, positively correlated with both the fruit crop size and the number of neighboring fruits across the nine fruiting plant species. However, the effect of the neighboring fruit density on fruit removal was lower remarkably than that of fruit crop size. Therefore, fruit crop size best predicted the differences among heterospecific fruiting plants in fruit removal. We suggest that fruiting plant species with high fruit crop size and high fruit removal contribute to intensive seed rain beneath them. 对云南省野生观果植物资源及昆明市各绿地观果植物的种类进行调查分析,结果表明,云南省野生观果植物有266种,隶属于76科183属;主要分布在蔷薇科、忍冬科、卫矛科、木兰科、小檗科、冬青科等中。观果植物的观赏色彩多为红色系,其次是黄色系、深色系和绿色,少见白色。应用于昆明市各类绿地的观果树种约84种,隶属于31科52属,应用中存在以下问题:(1)绿化应用不够广泛;(2)绿化应用的种类数量较少;(3)大多生长不良;(4)应用形式较为单一,景观结构多为单层,景观效果不突出。  相似文献

Abstract To elucidate the effects of herbivory by chrysomelid beetles on Rumex japonicus, rosette leaves were clipped and the subsequent fruit production and root growth were observed. The increase of leaf biomass of some clipped plants was greater than that of control plants, although this varied among individual plants. The root growth of clipped plants was less than that of control plants. Fruit production increased with plant size, and there was no difference in fruit production between clipped and control plants. Reproductive allocation (fruit biomass, relative to fruit biomass plus root growth) increased with plant size; it was greater in clipped plants than in control ones. Based on these results, reproductive allocation strategy against herbivory was discussed.  相似文献

Fruits are one of the major sources of vitamins, essential nutrients, antioxidants and fibers in human diet. During the last two–three decades, genetic engineering methods based on the use of transgenes have been successfully adopted to improve fruit plants and focused mainly on enhanced tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, increased fruit yield, improved post harvest shelf life of fruit, reduced generation time and production of fruit with higher nutritional value. However, the development of transgenic fruit plants and their commercialization are hindered by many regulatory and social hurdles. Nowadays, new genetic engineering approaches i.e. cisgenesis or intragenesis receive increasing interest for genetic modification of plants. The absence of selectable marker gene in the final product and the introduced gene(s) derived from the same plant or plants sexually compatible with the target crop should increase consumer’s acceptance. In this article, we attempt to summarize the recent progress achieved on the genetic engineering in fruit plants and their applications in crop improvement. Challenges and opportunities for the deployment of genetic engineering in crop improvement programs of fruit plants are also discussed.  相似文献

Tomato fruit on plants grown in circulating nutrient solutionexhibited a diurnal cycle in growth rate, measured as a changein diameter, with a maximum during thc day. The diurnal growthcycle was less evident in those fruit grown at high electricalconductivity (17 mS), or on days of reduced irradiance. Girdledfruit of low conductivity plants grew at a much reduced ratewith a diurnal cycle in reverse to that of ungirdled fruit,while girdled fruit of high conductivity plants showed no diurnalgrowth. The evidence suggests that phloem and xylem water transportinto fruit operate on opposite diurnal cycles. Partitioning of available xylem water in detached fruit betweenthe calyx and berry, as well as within the berry, was determinedby berry size and relative humidity in the air. Although berrytranspiration rate was unaffected by conductivity treatmentduring plant growth, water uptake capacity was greatly reducedin the berry from high conductivity plants, suggesting an increasedresistance in the xylem transport system within the fruit. Calcium (Ca) uptake into fruit and leaves is dependent on xylemic water movement, and hence presumably driven by transpiration and growth. High leaf transpiration is thought to restrict Ca movement to low-transpiring tomato fruit, which may increase fruit susceptibility to the Ca-deficiency disorder, blossom end rot (BER). The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of reduced leaf transpiration in abscisic acid (ABA)-treated plants on fruit and leaf Ca uptake and BER development. Tomato cultivars Ace 55 (Vf) and AB2 were grown in a greenhouse environment under Ca-deficit conditions and plants were treated weekly after pollination with water (control) or 500 mg l(-1) ABA. BER incidence was completely prevented in the ABA-treated plants and reached values of 30-45% in the water-treated controls. ABA-treated plants had higher stem water potential, lower leaf stomatal conductance, and lower whole-plant water loss than water-treated plants. ABA treatment increased total tissue and apoplastic water-soluble Ca concentrations in the fruit, and decreased Ca concentrations in leaves. In ABA-treated plants, fruit had a higher number of Safranin-O-stained xylem vessels at early stages of growth and development. ABA treatment reduced the phloem/xylem ratio of fruit sap uptake. The results indicate that ABA prevents BER development by increasing fruit Ca uptake, possibly by a combination of whole-plant and fruit-specific mechanisms.  相似文献

Fruit flies have evolved mechanisms using olfactory and visual signals to find and recognize suitable host plants. The objective of the present study was to determine how habitat patterns may assist fruit flies in locating host plants and fruit. The tomato fruit fly, Neoceratitis cyanescens (Bezzi), was chosen as an example of a specialized fruit fly, attacking plants of the Solanaceae family. A series of experiments was conducted in an outdoor field cage wherein flies were released and captured on sticky orange and yellow spheres displayed in pairs within or above potted host or non-host plants. Bright orange spheres mimicking host fruit were significantly more attractive than yellow spheres only when placed within the canopy of host plants and not when either within non-host plants or above both types of plants. Additional experiments combining sets of host and non-host plants in the same cage, or spraying leaf extract of host plant (bug weed) on non-host plants showed that volatile cues emitted by the foliage of host plants may influence the visual response of flies in attracting mature females engaged in a searching behaviour for a laying site and in assisting them to find the host fruit. Moreover, the response was specific to mature females with a high oviposition drive because starved mature females, immature females and males showed no significant preference for orange spheres. Olfactory signals emitted by the host foliage could be an indicator of an appropriate habitat, leading flies to engage in searching for a visual image.  相似文献

Documenting the floral biology of species throughout the Rubiaceae family is of particular interest since heterostyly and dioecy may have evolved more than once in this large family. Unfortunately many species in several tropical regions remain unstudied. The purpose of this paper is to describe the floral biology, the nature of self-incompatibility, morph ratios, and fecundity in natural populations of Gaertnera vaginata, a small tree endemic to the island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean. Measurements of floral characters in populations across the entire distribution of this species showed that G. vaginata exhibits a reciprocal stigma height and anther height dimorphism characteristic of a distylous species. Pollen grain size and corolla tube length are consistently greater in short-styled plants and long-styled plants produce more pollen per flower. Controlled pollinations in a natural population showed that 25% of the short-styled plants gave at least one fruit on intramorph (illegitimate) pollination, whereas no long-styled plants set fruit on illegitimate pollination. In total, 19.4% of illegitimate pollinations produced fruit on short-styled plants. No self-pollination gave fruit on either morph and between-morph pollinations produced 92.2 and 92.8% for short and long-styled plants, respectively. Overall, short-styled plants were significantly more abundant than long-styled plants. Short-styled plants outnumbered long-styled plants in 16 of the 19 populations. In three of these populations the morph ratio was significantly different from 1:1. In two natural populations, fruit set was significantly higher on long-styled plants, although the number of seeds per fruit was not significantly different between the two morphs. The possible effect of variation in the strength of heteromorphic incompatibility on observed variation in morph abundance and the possible causes for the variation in fruit set are discussed.  相似文献

Various factors known to affect fruit set in self-incompatible plants were studied in 11 populations of Centaurea scabiosa . The importance of genetic variation was estimated using isozymes. A low overall genetic differentiation among populations suggested high levels of either current or historical gene flow. Large variation in fruit set was found among populations, among plants within populations, and among flower heads within plants. Most of this variation was explained by differences among flower heads within plants. Within the range in population size studied, there was no indication that plants growing in the smaller populations had lower fruit set than plants in larger ones. A significant positive correlation between genetic variation and population reproductive success was found. Pollinator visitation rate was very high and dominated by bumblebees. It was rendered unlikely that reproduction was limited by pollinator availability. It was even suggested that a very high visitation rate might have negative effects on fruit set in some populations due to an increased proportion of geitonogamous pollination resulting in stigma clogging with non-compatible pollen. The number of flower heads produced by individual plants did not affect fruit set in individual flower heads.  相似文献

The reproductive success of animal-dispersed plants is closely linked to the number of seeds that they are able to disperse. The fruit crop size hypothesis states that a plant with large fruit crop size will attract more dispersers than a plant with a smaller fruit crop, which may result in more seeds being dispersed from the foremost. In this study, we experimentally examined the effect of crop size and other factors on primary seed dispersal in a neotropical shrub/tree, Casearia corymbosa (Flacourtiaceae). We used two predictive variables of reproductive success, which produce an accurate picture of seed dispersal ratio: fruit removal efficiency (proportion of a fruit crop removed by frugivores) and fruit removal success (relative contribution of each individual tree to the number of fruits removed in the population). We established two levels of fruit crop size at the C. corymbosa individuals, using plants with large (150 fruits) and small crops (50 fruits). We found that individual plants with larger crops had significantly higher values of fruit removal efficiency (92.6%) and success (5%) than plants with smaller crops (69.3% and 1.3%, respectively). Fruit removal efficiency was related to vegetation type, plant height and fruit width, but the variance explained by these variables was low ( < 8%). Fruit removal success was significantly related to crop size ( > 90% of the variance explained). These results suggest that fruit removal efficiency and success are strongly related to fruit crop size of C. corymbosa plants.  相似文献

Adult squash bugs, Anasa tristis (De Geer) (Heteroptera: Coreidae), were confined on watermelon plants at differing phenological stages and at densities of zero to four per plant in one trial and zero to 32 per plant in three additional trials. Squash bugs were allowed to feed on the plants until plants died or fruit matured. Plant foliage, roots, and fruit were harvested and weighed to determine effects on growth and productivity. Growth and fruit production was regressed on number of squash bugs and results indicated that an increasing density of squash bugs feeding on vining and flowering stage plants resulted in significant reductions in plant growth and fruit yield. When plants were infested at the fruit set stage of growth, there was either less effect or no effect on plant growth and fruit production. Plant mortality increased as the density of squash bugs increased regardless of the stage of growth when plants were infested with squash bugs.  相似文献

中国天山野果林种子植物共计60科237属435种,种类组成趋向于集中在少数科内,区系优势现象相当明显,反映出野果林自然环境的特殊性与区系的过渡性。在这些植物种类中有国家重点保护植物9种、中国珍稀濒危保护植物3种、自治区重点保护植物9种;林区野生植物资源非常丰富,统计结果表明:野生果树40种、食用植物30种、饲用植物以种、蜜源植物111种、观赏植物132种、香料植物如种、药用植物131种。文中对各类资源植物的特征进行了分析和讨论,并就野果林的保护及可持续利用提出建议。  相似文献

运用立体显微镜和扫描电子显微镜对产于福建省的石荠苧属3种药用植物的花粉和果皮的微形态特征进行系统观察。观察结果表明,3种植物花粉微形态特征比较相似;果皮微形态存在较明显的种间差异,且性状较稳定。石荠苧属果实表皮微形态特征是该属分类与系统研究中不可忽视的性状。  相似文献

本文采用质外体染料示踪法研究了葡萄果实不同发育期根域限制和非根域限制(对照)处理果实维管束水分运输变化。结果表明,在葡萄果实发育的第一次快速生长期,根域限制和对照处理的果实周缘维管束被染色数量最多,染料溶液在葡萄果实中的运输速率也最高,分别为1.72和1.63cm·h-1,根域限制处理果实中周缘维管束和中央维管束中染料溶液的运输速度低于对照处理,但胚珠维管束中染料运输速度要高于对照,为1.32cm·h-1;进入生长停滞期后,根域限制和对照处理的葡萄果实中周缘维管束被染色数目降低,染料溶液在中央维管束中的运输速度分别降低为0.72和0.70cm·h-1;在果实的第二次快速生长期,根域限制和对照处理果实周缘维管束染色数目仍然低于果实发育的第一次快速生长期,根域限制果实周缘维管束染色范围和染料运输速率都高于对照处理。  相似文献

Spinacia oleracea L. was grown hydroponically across an experimental salinity gradient with treatments of 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 grams of NaCl/liter of nutrient medium. Plant height, root biomass, vegetative biomass, fruit morphology, average fruit weight, and fruit mass: volume ratio were examined in each treatment to determine if differences other than primary sex characteristics exist between male, female, and monoecious plants. Average fruit weight was the only parameter examined that was not useful as a secondary sex characteristic. Orthogonal contrasts examining plant height, vegetative biomass, and root biomass of plants were distinct from one another across the salinity gradient. Similarly, female and monoecious plants differed significantly from one another in terms of root biomass and the average mass: volume ratio of the fruit each sexual morph produced, as well as the proportion of smooth to wrinkled fruit produced. The data indicate that male, female, and monoecious plants are three distinct sexual morphs.  相似文献

Abstract: The present study of Achillea ptarmica, a perennial in which the basic attraction units are inflorescences (heads) rather than single flowers, examines whether the production of attracting organs (rays) entails a cost in terms of fruit and flower production. To test for such tradeoffs, I subjected plants to ray removal and compared the reproductive success of these plants with the reproductive success of unmanipulated controls. Hand-pollinated plants on which all rays were removed at the bud stage had a significantly higher percent fruit set than hand-pollinated plants in the control group, suggesting that the investment in attractive structures is made at the expense of fruit maturation. Ray removal did not significantly affect the number of heads initiated. Given these observations and the lack of tradeoffs between fruit set and other yield components, I hypothesize that the optimal ray size is a compromise between pollinator-mediated selection for larger displays and tradeoffs with fruit production.  相似文献

Transgenic tomato plants overexpressing a vacuolar Na+/H+ antiport were able to grow, flower, and produce fruit in the presence of 200 mM sodium chloride. Although the leaves accumulated high sodium concentrations, the tomato fruit displayed very low sodium content. Contrary to the notion that multiple traits introduced by breeding into crop plants are needed to obtain salt-tolerant plants, the modification of a single trait significantly improved the salinity tolerance of this crop plant. These results demonstrate that with a combination of breeding and transgenic plants it could be possible to produce salt-tolerant crops with far fewer target traits than had been anticipated. The accumulation of sodium in the leaves and not in the fruit demonstrates the utility of such a modification in preserving the quality of the fruit.  相似文献
