A number of processing options associated with the use of a “regional curve” to standardise tree-ring measurements and generate a chronology representing changing tree growth over time are discussed. It is shown that failing to use pith offset estimates can generate a small but systematic chronology error. Where chronologies contain long-timescale signal variance, tree indices created by division of the raw measurements by RCS curve values produce chronologies with a skewed distribution. A simple empirical method of converting tree-indices to have a normal distribution is proposed. The Expressed Population Signal, which is widely used to estimate the statistical confidence of chronologies created using curve-fitting methods of standardisation, is not suitable for use with RCS generated chronologies. An alternative implementation, which takes account of the uncertainty associated with long-timescale as well as short-timescale chronology variance, is proposed. The need to assess the homogeneity of differently-sourced sets of measurement data and their suitability for amalgamation into a single data set for RCS standardisation is discussed. The possible use of multiple growth-rate based RCS curves is considered where a potential gain in chronology confidence must be balanced against the potential loss of long-timescale variance. An approach to the use of the “signal-free” method for generating artificial measurement series with the ‘noise’ characteristics of real data series but with a known chronology signal applied for testing standardisation performance is also described.  相似文献

Temporal stability of the relationship between a potential proxy climate record and the climate record itself is the foundation of palaeoproxy reconstructions of past climate variability. Dendroclimatologists have spent considerable effort exploring the issue of temporal instability of temperature records at high-latitude and −altitude Northern Hemisphere sites. Much of this work has focused on the Divergence Problem in which the modern ends of tree-ring chronologies exhibit pronounced departures from the climate-proxy relationships of preceding decades. However, there has been little scrutiny of how different methods might influence determinations of temporal instability at either the local scale or across broader spatial domains. Here we use four sets of Southern Hemisphere (SH) chronologies and three sets of synthetic data with known interventions to compare four methodologies that have been widely used to assess the temporal stability of relationships between tree-ring series and climate. Our analyses demonstrate that a determination of temporal instability may be partially dependent on method used to examine data, that some methods are more sensitive to standardisation choice than others, and that all methods are better at detecting high- rather than low-frequency instability. In all cases, the relatively modest strength of the relationships between the selected SH ring-width chronologies and temperature is likely to be an issue, especially if changes in trends are of interest. We recommend that robust assessment of temporal instability between tree-ring chronologies and observational climate data should use a range of methods and that unstable temporal relationships across space be carefully considered in the context of large climate field reconstructions.  相似文献

The Regional Curve Standardization (RCS) is one of the most employed standardization methods to remove biological signals in long tree ring chronologies. The approach assumes that an overall age-related growth trend typify all tree ring series to be included in a standardized tree ring chronology. Although several potential problems of the method have been examined, the influence of varying the sampling height along tree stems has not been evaluated. Considering that age-related growth trends may vary with stem height, biases may arise when combining samples from unknown or variable sampling heights, a frequent situation with subfossil logs. In this study we perform a detailed stem analysis of 15 lakeshore black spruce (Picea mariana Mill. B.S.P.) trees in the taiga of eastern Canada to describe how the age-related growth trend varies with stem height and evaluate associated biases in RCS chronologies built from living and subfossil trees. Results show that the age-related growth trends vary markedly and systematically along stems, potentially generating large methodological biases in RCS chronologies, especially near the recent chronology end. These biases may lead to erroneous reconstructions of recent climatic trends and cause false divergence between tree ring and climate series. We have developed a correction procedure that appears efficient in removing these biases from chronologies built with the lakeshore trees and associated subfossil logs.  相似文献

In 1980 Ernst Hollstein published his Central European Oak Chronology, which covers a period from 724 BCE to 1974 CE. Besides a later correction of the end date of the sampling site chronologies Kirnsulzbach (Germany) and Gustavsburg (Germany) this master chronology has since not been changed and still remains one of the most important bases for dendrochronological dating in western Germany. It stands out in so far as it provides comprehensive graphical findspot series for each individual sampled site and year to year growth values for eight regional sub-chronologies in addition to the combined Central European reference curve.Particularly due to the fact of Hollstein’s chronology being publicly available, it has frequently been criticized for its insufficient data to bridge the Late Antiquity between 350 and 400 CE with only three sampling sites (tomb near Beerlegem, Belgium; tomb inside of Cologne Cathedral, Germany; subfossil trees near Broichweiden, Germany) and that these site chronologies cover those decades with inadequate correlation coefficients. With regard to recent statistical threshold values for crossdating, Hollstein’s Late Antiquity bridging needs to be reconsidered.Therefore, in a combined effort, the dendrochronological laboratories at Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier (RLM), the University of Cologne and Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg re-evaluated Hollstein’s findings for Late Antiquity by including the respective dendrochronological examinations conducted in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and north-eastern France during the past 40 years. A total of 62 site chronologies were compiled to establish a new Late Antiquity chronology. Thirteen of these site chronologies could be used to support Hollstein’s original bridging series between 350 and 400 CE while the mean series for Broichweiden had to be corrected from end date 365 to 503 CE. Furthermore, this new bridging chronology could be validated by comparing it to an independent chronology from southern Germany. This study thus proves that the integrity of Hollstein’s Central European Oak Chronology is not compromised by a flawed Late Antiquity bridging and that therefore dating based on the Roman part of this chronology can still be considered as absolute.  相似文献

The present study applies classic spectral analysis techniques to investigate cyclic patterns in four tree-ring chronologies of Pinus montana Miller from the Central Italian Alps (Valle del Gallo). Three of the chronologies were derived from mountain pine populations located in relatively undisturbed areas of the valley bottom and valley slopes, and one from a population located in an area of the valley bottom occasionally affected by sheetfloods. Each chronology consists of raw, standard, and residual data. We estimated power spectra by applying the Blackman–Tukey Method, the Maximum Entropy Method, the Multitaper Method, and the Lomb–Scargle Fourier transform, and tested the results against appropriate red noise models. The power spectra of the standard chronologies from undisturbed areas yielded statistically significant and reproducible interdecadal-scale cyclicities with main peaks closely spaced around a mean value of 0.05 cycle/year, in association with statistically non-significant albeit reproducible peaks at higher frequencies. The chronology of trees affected by sheetfloods yielded no statistically significant cyclicities, probably because sheetfloods altered tree growth. Raw chronologies, instead, yielded power spectra dominated by the growth trend, while residual chronologies yielded flat power spectra. Our analysis suggests that tree growth, if not disturbed by external geomorphological factors, was controlled by environmental and/or climatic conditions that oscillated in the last 150 years on interdecadal (20 years) to decadal scales.  相似文献

Large-scale genome projects require the analysis of large amounts of raw data. This analysis often involves the application of a chain of biology-based programs. Many of these programs are difficult to operate because they are non-integrated, command-line driven, and platform-dependent. The problem is compounded when the number of data files involved is large, making navigation and status-tracking difficult. To demonstrate how this problem can be addressed, we have created a platform-independent Web front end that integrates a set of programs used in a genomic project analyzing gene function by transposon mutagenesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In particular, these programs help define a large number of transposon insertion events within the yeast genome, identifying both the precise site of transposon insertion as well as potential open reading frames disrupted by this insertion event. Our Web interface facilitates this analysis by performing the following tasks. Firstly, it allows each of the analysis programs to be launched against multiple directories of data files. Secondly, it allows the user to view, download, and upload files generated by the programs. Thirdly, it indicates which sets of data directories have been processed by each program. Although designed specifically to aid in this project, our interface exemplifies a general approach by which independent software programs may be integrated into an efficient protocol for large-scale genomic data processing. The availability of exactly dated tree‐ring chronologies is limited in tropical regions. However, these chronologies could contribute widely to studies of the influence of natural and human‐induced factors on tropical forests. We examine the potential for building a chronology based on three sites in the miombo woodland of western Zambia. Brachystegia spiciformis Benth., a dominant species from this vegetation type, is used. Response of the chronology to several climatic factors is examined. All specimens showed very clear growth rings, and cross‐dating between radii of a tree was successful for all trees. Site chronologies could be constructed after cross‐dating of growth ring series of individual trees. The mean growth ring curves of the three sites were significantly similar, allowing for the construction of a regional chronology. Correlation function analysis between the tree‐ring chronology and regional climatic variables revealed that climate at the core of the rainy season, in December and January, has an explicit influence on tree growth. Where precipitation and relative humidity in these months influence tree growth positively, temperature correlates in a negative way. Some 20 percent of the variance in the B. spiciformis tree‐ring chronology is accounted for by wet season rainfall. The successful cross‐dating and correlation between a tree‐ring chronology and climate demonstrated in this study indicate annual ring formation in B. spiciformis trees and sensitivity to climatic conditions.  相似文献

Variations in mountain snowpack in the western Canadian Cordillera have widespread and important impacts on ecosystems, environmental processes and socio-economic activities (e.g. water availability downstream). Historical records of snowpack generally span only the latter half of the 20th century offering a limited perspective on the causes and uniqueness of recently observed changes across the region. This paper explores the potential utility of a network of low elevation Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) tree ring-width chronologies to reconstruct past snowpack variations. Correlation coefficients between the tree-ring chronologies and a set of snow water equivalent (SWE) records are calculated and mapped. Separate analyses were carried out for total ring- width (TRW) and partial-ring measurements (earlywood and latewood; EW and LW). A set of Adjusted LW chronologies was also developed; in these, the relationship between LW and the preceding EW width has been removed. The ring-width chronologies exhibit moderately strong relationships with SWE records from the western Canadian Cordillera and these relationships vary in sign across the region. Distinctive regional groups are identified where chronologies exhibit same-sign correlations with SWE, in possible accordance with the elevation and characteristics of the tree-ring chronology sample sites. The EW chronologies correlate more strongly and consistently with SWE records in regions where the growth relationship with SWE is negative. The LW chronologies, and particularly the Adjusted LW chronologies, exhibit a greater number of positive correlations with the set of SWE records. Collectively these results offer valuable insights for developing a targeted sampling and/or reconstruction strategy that can exploit these different relationships with SWE to generate more robust estimates of pre-instrumental snowpack for the region.  相似文献

Progress in quantitative wood anatomy has resulted in a growing number of increasingly understood proxies from the tree-ring archive. Much of this work has been based on tree species in the Northern Hemisphere. Here, we present and examine a relatively dense network of wood property chronologies (wood density, tracheid radial diameter, cell wall thickness and ring width) from several species in Tasmania, southern Australia. We ask how the relationships amongst the different types of chronologies differ within and amongst species. We also consider how each chronology responds to monthly climate. In general terms, and similar to findings in the Northern Hemisphere, relationships between the various wood properties and climate are stronger than those between climate and ring width chronologies. An important exception to this is the highest elevation Lagarostrobos franklinii site. Additionally, strongest response to climate for the wood properties generally occurs for the concurrent growing season compared to the prior growing season for ring width. Relationships amongst the various chronology types differ for the various species, with L. franklinii also showing some variation in these relationships by site (possibly associated with elevation). Results suggest there is considerable value in further exploring the potential for developing anatomical wood chronologies for climate reconstruction from other species for which ring widths do not exhibit a strong climate signal.  相似文献

基于川西卧龙地区林线位置岷江冷杉(Abies faxoniana)的树轮宽度数据, 结合地面气象站和空间网格化气象数据, 对不同去趋势年表对气候条件的响应特征进行了比较分析。研究表明: 不同去趋势年表的气候响应特征具有很大的相似性, 具体表现为前一年9月份、当年3月份和7月份的气温, 以及前一年10-12月份的降水、当年4月份和7月份的降水对树木生长的正影响作用; 前一年11月份到当年3月份的相对湿度, 以及当年2-3月份和7-8月份的霜冻频率对树木生长的负影响作用。从不同去趋势方法对气候响应的异质性特征来看, 保守曲线、67%样芯长度步长、60年步长和90年步长的平滑样条函数去趋势年表间具有很强的相关性, 对气候响应也最明显, 特征基本一致。30年步长的平滑曲线去趋势年表与其他去趋势年表的相关性较弱, 与气候要素的相关性也明显较小。另外, 未经去趋势处理的树轮宽度年表统计参量数值要明显高于去趋势年表, 它与气候要素的相关特征也基本反映出川西卧龙地区树木生长对气候响应的基本特征。  相似文献

Individual tree-ring width chronologies and mean chronologies from Pinus tabuliformis Carr. (Chinese pine) and Sabina przewalskii Kom. (Qilian juniper) tree cores were collected and analyzed from two sites in the eastern Qilian Mountains of China. The chronologies were used to analyze individual and time-varying tree-ring growth to climate sensitivity with monthly mean air temperature and total precipitation data for the period 1958–2008. Climate–growth relationships were assessed with correlation functions and their stationarity and consistency over time were measured using moving correlation analysis. Individuals’ growth–climate correlations suggested increased percentages of individuals are correlated with certain variables (e.g., current June temperature at the P. tabuliformis site; previous June, December and current May temperature and May precipitation at the S. przewalskii site). These same climatic variables also correspond to the mean chronology correlations. A decreased percentage of individuals correlated with these climatic variables indicates a reduced sensitivity of the mean chronology. Moving correlation analysis indicated a significant change over time in the sensitivity of trees to climatic variability. Our results suggested: (1) that individual tree analysis might be a worthwhile tool to improve the quality and reliability of the climate signal from tree-ring series for dendroclimatology research; and (2) time-dependent fluctuations of climate growth relationships should be taken into account when assessing the quality and reliability of reconstructed climate signals.  相似文献

A prerequisite for successful dating of wooden archaeological finds and historic wooden constructions in a specific territory is the existence of a chronology. In the Czech Republic the species most frequently dated by dendrochronology is oak (Quercus spp.). There are two territories where oak forests can be found (Bohemia and Moravia/Silesia), which are divided by an area without oak – the Highlands (Vyso?ina). The previous oak chronology for the Czech Republic from 2005 was extended in 2010, and currently we have a discontinuous oak chronology (CZGES 2010) ranging from 4682 bc to 2006 ad with a large sample size between 760 ad and the present. When comparing this chronology with European chronologies, the highest degree of similarity has been observed with chronologies for Eastern Austria, most of Germany and the Polish part of South Silesia. When comparing the chronologies for Moravia/Silesia (MORGES 2010) and Bohemia (CECHGES 2010) separately with chronologies from the Pannonian Basin, the Moravian/Silesian chronology manifests higher degrees of similarity. The Czech oak chronology enlarges the European network of chronologies, which is necessary for dendroarchaeological applications mainly.  相似文献

Arctic and alpine shrubs are valuable for future dendro-ecological and dendro-climatological studies in regions where trees are sparse or absent. A commonly accepted procedure of sampling shrub stem disks is at the root collar. However many shrub studies report low inter-series correlations in radial measurements as compared to trees. Many studies also report cross-dating difficulties with radial measurements from shrubs within a stand and commonly attribute this to differential growth along the length of the stem. So does one stem disk entirely represent the environmental parameters the shrub might be reacting to? Does change in sampling location of the stem disk affect the subsequent ring-width chronologies and climate sensitivity? To tackle these questions, we investigated Juniperus communis L. – a species wide spread in the circumpolar arctic – across a latitudinal gradient in the Ural Mountains. Based on traditional radial ring-width measurements we assessed growth synchronicity along the length of shrub stems. We also compared ring width chronologies representing different stem heights with respect to their relationships with temperature and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI). Growth patterns often varied significantly among stems disks of the same shrubs, resulting in dissimilar climate-growth relationships of stem disk chronologies. For correlations with temperature, stem disks at 20 cm distance from the root collar captured the best signal. For correlations with SPEI data we could not find any specific stem disk chronology with highest sensitivity. At least in our dataset, no “perfect sampling height” with high climate sensitivity exists and our results thus highlight that a single stem disk from a shrub may not completely represent the shrub’s growth response to climate parameters.  相似文献

Although the importance of centuries-long tree ring width oak chronologies in dating wood, eastern European regions are still lacking a reference chronology. To fill this geographical gap, we combined living and historical chronologies from the Moldova region, including part of Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Here we present the “Suceava oak chronology” as the first 804 years long chronology continuously covering the 1216–2019 period. Our analyses further revealed the strong teleconnection of the Suceava oak chronology with south European ones. The link between Romania and northern Turkey chronologies is of particular importance in the context of the high abundance of undated subfossil and archaeological/historical oak wood in eastern Europe and intense wood trades with central Europe in XV-XVII centuries. The availability of the Suceava oak chronology will provide a good base for precise dating and climatic reconstructions.  相似文献

Over the past decade, dendrochronologists have increasingly adopted the signal-free detrending (SFD) method to remove age-size trends in tree-ring measurement series, amplify the common stand-wide signal in composite chronologies, and recover medium- to low-frequency patterns that may be inadvertently removed by other detrending approaches. However, since its introduction in 2008, no systematic evaluation of the effects of SFD on tree-ring chronologies has been performed. Here we conduct the first review of SFD in dendrochronology and assess its effects when applied to large tree-ring networks. We analyzed the PAGES North America 2 K database of nearly 300 temperature-sensitive chronologies and the Missouri River database of over 350 chronologies curated for the purpose of reconstructing Missouri River streamflow. Both databases contain multiple versions of each chronology generated by different detrending methods, including those produced with (and without) the signal-free procedure applied. We evaluated (i) whether SFD increases chronology coherence at the site level by boosting the between-tree agreement, (ii) whether SFD increases coherence on a regional basis by making neighboring chronologies more similar to each other, and (iii) whether signal-free chronologies retained more medium- to low-frequency variability than their traditional counterparts. We find that, while SFD increased the strength of common signals in many instances, the effect was not universal and some sites even show a decrease in signal coherence. At regional scales, SFD increases chronology coherence in temperature-sensitive records but had no detectable effect on moisture-sensitive records. Our results demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of SFD prior to deploying this method for chronology development and paleoclimate reconstruction.  相似文献

An increasingly important source of annually resolved palaeoenvironmental proxy data originates from cross-dated incremental chronologies summarizing the shell growth of several individuals. Here, we have analysed annual increment variations in a collection of radiocarbon-dated shells of ocean quahog (Arctica islandica) from early Holocene prodelta deposits in north Norway. Radiocarbon dating of the shell material showed that the increments were formed contemporaneously during Preboreal times. The biologically youngest shell contains 35 annual increments, whereas the oldest shell shows 169 increments. Time-series of annual increments demonstrated clear age trends with the widest increments during the very early years of bivalve life, followed by a notable decline in increment widths as the bivalves aged. Subsequent to removing these biological trends from the series, a sclerochronological cross-dating was carried out and resolved the temporal alignments of the shell growth increment records relative to each other. The resulting shell growth increment chronology evidences vigorous growth variations. Spectral analysis of the chronology revealed 3.7- and 4.3-year periodicities, indicative of Preboreal environmental oscillations. Periodicities of longer period were not detected. Our results prove the value of radiocarbon-dated shell assemblages to build “floating” geochronologies for periods and regions where dead shells from museum collections or seabed are not obtainable. Increasing constructions of such chronologies enhance the potential of sclerochronological cross-dating of annual shell growth increment chronologies to depict and detail annually-resolved climate variability not only for late Holocene, as previously illustrated, but also for early Holocene times, when large-scale oscillations punctuated the global climate dynamics. Development of longer chronologies with higher sample replication remains an attainable interdisciplinary target.  相似文献

Two new Juniper tree-ring-width (TRW) chronologies spanning more than 500 years were developed in the Yellow River source area, North Eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (NE-QTP). For the two studied sites, located approximately 50 km apart, split correlation and coherence analysis reveal unstable tree-growth responses to local moisture availability. While significant correlations are obtained with April–June local precipitation, Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and river flow from 1948/1954 to 1998 and from 1948/1954 to 1970s, these correlations vanish for the time period 1970s-1998. The local instrumental climate data (precipitation, PDSI and river flow) exhibit opposite correlations with large scale modes of variability (El Niño Southern Oscillation, ENSO, and Pacific Decadal Oscillation, PDO) before and after the 1977 PDO shift. One tree-ring chronology is coherent and anti-phased with instrumental ENSO/PDO indices at 5.2-year frequency. On the longer time span, this TRW chronology is compared with PDO reconstructed from historical Chinese data. This comparison also exhibits unstable multi-decadal relationships, notably in the mid 19th century. Altogether, the comparison between our two chronologies, local instrumental climate records, and ENSO/PDO indices suggest a cautious use of local TRW records for paleoclimate reconstructions. Further studies are needed to explore both the spatial coherency of tree-ring records and the temporal stability of their response to local and large scale climate variability.  相似文献
