The cost of herbicide resistance measured by a competition experiment   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Summary The cost of resistance has been measured by a competition experiment over a range of densities, in the absence of herbicide treatment, on two nearly isogenic lines of Foxtail millet, differing in a chloroplastic resistance to herbicide. Three characters have been measured: shoot height, shoot weight, and seed production. Sensitive individuals were better competitors despite a larger decrease in production under within-biotype competition. The cost of resistance was density dependent and increased with density. The cost was higher when measured on seed production and reached 65% at the higher density for resistant individuals. This is compatible with the low frequency or the absence of that gene in natural populations. This work illustrates that the cost is easiest to observe when high levels of constraints are used.  相似文献

Pulmonary barotrauma associated with artificial ventilation is recognised clinically as pneumothorax, pneumo-mediastinum, or subcutaneous emphysema. Eleven patients who died in the intensive therapy unit after artificial ventilation were found at necropsy to have pronounced bronchiolectasis, which was associated with a greatly increased physiological dead space during life. The condition was best predicted by the maximum level of positive end expiratory pressure and the duration of application of positive end expiratory pressure. The clinical course of the lesion in survivors is not known. Further detailed studies are needed, but it is suggested that high levels of positive end expiratory pressure should be used with caution.  相似文献

Helpers at the nest of cooperatively breeding birds often 'lighten-the-load' of the breeders, by allowing them to decrease their effort. When the shape of the relationship between survival cost and provisioning effort is concave-up then a helper incurs only a small increment in mortality, for a given amount of help, but the breeder benefits from a larger fall in mortality. A convex-up relationship for pre-breeders may explain why some groups (such as larids) do not breed cooperatively. Load-lightening could provide significant extra gains to the helper's future indirect fitness by increasing the lifespan and life-time reproductive success of related breeders.  相似文献

Jet high-frequency artificial ventilation produces oscillations of some parts of the chest wall, which in its turn transmits oscillations to the lung parenchyma. It results in the mix-up of the gas in the alveolar space, which leads to the increase in the gradient of oxygen concentration on the alveolar membranes, thus, augmenting oxygen saturation of the blood. The effect is the same when oscillation artificial ventilation is performed, owing to the provocation of the oscillations amplified by the resonance in the natural acoustic circuit, formed by the adjacent parts of the chest and lung parenchyma. Derangement of the exudative adhesion to the bronchi epithelial tissue intensifies gas exchange, when the oscillations are generated in the lungs. It facilitates the removal of the exudate and lets the air into the previously obstructed parts of the lungs. Clinical studies confirm the effect of the increase in the blood oxygenation (by average 20%) at the feeding air column by pneumatic oscillations in the range of 65 Hz, when traditional artificial ventilation is performed.  相似文献

巢捕食是影响鸟类繁殖成功率的一个重要因素,也是鸟类繁殖生态研究中的一项重要内容。确定鸟类的主要巢捕食者及影响巢捕食的因素对于了解鸟类繁殖成功率、种群增长率及种群数量等具有重要意义。2009—2012年,对辽宁仙人洞国家级自然保护区人工巢箱中繁殖的杂色山雀(Parus varius)、沼泽山雀(P.palustris)、大山雀(P.major)和白眉姬鹟(Ficedula zanthopygia)四种鸟类的巢捕食率及影响巢捕食的因素进行了研究。研究共记录到238个繁殖巢(杂色山雀74巢、沼泽山雀21巢、大山雀118巢、白眉姬鹟25巢),其中35巢被捕食,捕食率为14.7%,雏鸟期被捕食占91.4%。巢捕食率在4种鸟类之间无差异(x~2=0.429,df=3,P=0.934)。以锦蛇(Elaphe spp.)为代表的蛇类是该地区小型森林洞巣鸟类繁殖期主要捕食者,占总捕食率的94.3%。对影响巢捕食的22个相关因子进行二元逻辑斯蒂回归分析发现,坡度、地面裸露率、草本盖度对巢捕食具有显著性影响;出雏时间、坡位、距碎石块距离对巢捕食的影响接近显著水平;而巢高、树粗、巢箱年龄、窝卵数、距路距离等对巢捕食无显著影响。因此,处于坡度较陡,坡位较高,草本覆盖率较高,地面裸露率较低,距碎石块距离较近,且出雏时间较晚的巢更容易被捕食。  相似文献

Microcell-mediated chromosome transfer (MMCT) technology enables a single and intact mammalian chromosome or megabase-sized chromosome fragments to be transferred from donor to recipient cells. The conventional MMCT method is performed immediately after the purification of microcells. The timing of the isolation of microcells and the preparation of recipient cells is very important. Thus, ready-made microcells can improve and simplify the process of MMCT. Here, we established a cryopreservation method to store microcells at −80 °C, and compared these cells with conventionally- (immediately-) prepared cells with respect to the efficiency of MMCT and the stability of a human artificial chromosome (HAC) transferred to human HT1080 cells. The HAC transfer in microcell hybrids was confirmed by FISH analysis. There was no significant difference between the two methods regarding chromosome transfer efficiency and the retention rate of HAC. Thus, cryopreservation of ready-to-use microcells provides an improved and simplified protocol for MMCT.  相似文献

Previous work has demonstrated frequency-dependent selection by wild garden birds when feeding on green and brown pastry ''baits''. When the density of baits is low, the common colour is eaten disproportionately more than the rare colour (apostatic selection), and when the density is very high, the rare colour is eaten disproportionately more than the common (anti-apostatic selection). We explored the relationship between frequency-dependent predation and density in an experiment at 16 separate sites, using four levels of density and two frequencies of green and brown. Analysis of estimates of log-relative risk ratios showed little evidence for frequency-independent selection, but frequency-dependent selection changed gradually from apostatic at low density to anti-apostatic at high density. The validity of these conclusions in terms of individual bird behaviour was confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulations. We thus conclude that selection by wild birds feeding on green and brown artificial prey is frequency dependent, and that the strength and direction of this selection changes with prey density in a gradual and predictable manner.  相似文献

Energy cost of whole-body protein synthesis was measured in vivo in chicks by comparing the changes in protein synthesis and heat production after the administration of cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis. 2. Incorporation of phenylalanine into whole-body protein fraction was promptly inhibited after the intravenous injection of cycloheximide, and the effect was sustained for at least 3 hr. 3. Both whole-body protein synthesis and total heat production were significantly reduced by the cycloheximide administration. 4. The energy cost of whole-body protein synthesis was calculated to be 5.35 kJ per g protein synthesis, and hence on a molar basis 7.52 ATPs are required per peptide bond synthesis.  相似文献

Validation of oxygen consumption measurements during artificial ventilation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We describe a system for the absolute calibration of indirect calorimeters, under the conditions of artificial ventilation and increased inspired O2 concentration, in which butane, at a measured flow rate, is burned downstream of an artificial lung. One milliliter of butane requires 6.4 ml O2 for its combustion, and the respiratory quotient is 0.615. With the closed-circuit O2-replenishment method there was no significant systematic error in the measurement of either O2 consumption or CO2 output and a random error with a SD of 8.3 ml/min for O2 consumption and 6.3 ml/min for CO2 output. There were no significant differences in the errors with inspired O2 concentrations between 23.8 and 59.5% and O2 consumptions between 89 and 366 ml/min.  相似文献

Female ornamentation is frequently observed in animal species and is sometimes found as more evolutionary labile than male ornamentation. A complex array of factors may explain its presence and variation. Here we assessed the role of female cost of reproduction and paternal care. Both factors have been pinpointed as important by theoretical studies but have not been investigated yet in details at the interspecific level. We worked on 133 species of North temperate Passeriformes bird species for which both the clutch volume – here taken as the proxy of female cost of reproduction – and amount of paternal care are relatively well known. Using spectrometry, we measured the whole-body coloured plumage patches and quantified three metrics corresponding to brightness (i.e. achromatic component), colour chromaticity (i.e. intensity) and colour volume (i.e. diversity). We found a strong association between male and female colour metrics. Controlling for this association, we found additional small but detectable effects of both cost of reproduction and paternal care. First, females of species with more paternal care were slightly brighter. Second, the interaction between the level of paternal care and egg volume was correlated with female colour intensity: females with more paternal care were more chromatic, with this association mostly present when their investment in reproduction was low. Together these results suggest that female cost of reproduction and paternal care are part of the multiple factors explaining variation of female coloration, besides the strong covariation between male and female coloration.  相似文献

Competitive displacement is considered the most severe consequence of interspecific competition; if a superior competitor invades the habitat of an inferior species, the inferior species will be displaced. Most displacements previously reported among arthropods were caused by exotic species. The lack of investigation of displacement among native species may be due to their apparently harmonious coexistence, even if it is equivalent to an outcome of interspecific association. A seasonal change in the species composition of spider mites, from Panonychus ulmi to Tetranychus urticae, is observed in apple trees worldwide. Previous laboratory experiments have revealed amensal effects of T. urticae on P. ulmi via their webs. Using manipulation experiments in an orchard, we tested whether this seasonal change in species composition occurred as the result of interspecific competition between these spider mites. Invasion by T. urticae prevented an increase in P. ulmi densities throughout the experimental periods. Degree of overlap relative to the independent distribution on a leaf-surface basis (ω S) changed from positive to negative with increasing density of T. urticae. T. urticae invasion drove P. ulmi toward upper leaf surfaces (competitor-free space). The niche adjustment by P. ulmi occurred between leaf surfaces but not among leaves. Our findings show that asymmetrical competition between T. urticae and P. ulmi plays an important role in this unidirectional displacement and that the existence of refuges within a leaf produces the apparently harmonious coexistence of the mites and obscures their negative association.  相似文献

The effectiveness of active escape as an alternative to chemical and physical irritants in defensive mimicry was tested. Philaenus spumarius is a polymorphic insect used to illustrate the hypothesis that an efficient escape mechanism could be associated with conspicuousness by potential predators causing them to avoid this type of prey.
Tile experiment used robins (Erithacus rubecula) as predators and mealworms {Tenebrio mulilur) , with colour bands of either green, orange or blue, as prey. To simulate escape the prey was offered from a lunged platform which could be dropped allowing the mealworm to roll away and out ol'sigln of the bird before it could be pecked. During the first half of the experiment (day 1–10) only one of the tin ee colours of mealworm was allowed to be caught, within a 180 s time limit. This was a cryptic non-mimetic (blue) form. The other two were the cryptic (green) and conspicuous (orange) escaping models. In the second half of the experiment (day 11–17) the platform was not lowered within the lime limit. The three forms of prey remain available; the models thus becoming the mimics.
During the first part of the experiment the birds took the non-mimetic form Ireely and learned to avoid the conspicuous and to a lesser degree the cryptic models. Throughout the second pan of the experiment the conspicuous form continued to be avoided more than the cryptic, illustrating the greater efficiency of conspicuous colour combined with escape.  相似文献

Food-storing birds demonstrate remarkable memory ability in recalling the locations of thousands of hidden food caches. Although this behaviour requires the hippocampus, its synaptic mechanisms are not understood. Here we show the effects of cannabinoid receptor (CB1-R) blockade on spatial memory in food-storing black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilla). Intra-hippocampal infusions of the CB1-R antagonist SR141716A enhanced long-term memory for the location of a hidden food reward, measured 72 h after encoding. However, when the reward location changed during the retention interval, birds that had received SR141716A during initial learning showed impairments in recalling the most recent reward location. Thus, blocking CB1-R activity may lead to more robust, long-lasting memories, but these memories may be a source of proactive interference. The relationship between trace strength and interference may be important in understanding neural mechanisms of hippocampal function in general, as well as understanding the enhanced memory of food-storing birds.  相似文献
